I know right? The great irony is my company is cheap as fuck and covers it, and Petco doesn't. Funny shit.

They're reviewing whether or not they can make an "exception". Ridiculous.

Another reason to add to the list why I try to avoid Petco...

stay put. Gain ownership, if not, float your resume when the time comes and I bet you get bombarded with others. Why wouldn't you with how confident in how valuable you are?

The last time I got pissed at my work was because they added responsibility and didn't give me a raise. I put a resume out on Tuesday, got an interview on Wednesday, and an offer for 33% increase on Thursday.

I ended up leveraging that offer with my current employer, as they matched and also started the work from home (commute was a gripe).

The lesson is, yes, I am marketable and am confident I could find a desirable exit almost whenever I want.

This particular one is appealing though for a few reasons. The main one is that the hiring manager is my old boss, and he loved me. I essentially have a sponsor within the company at the director level starting out. And I know I'll like my boss and he'll like me. That's huge.

There is always a better job somewhere.
You can't just sit around saying one day some job better then Petco might come around so I'm gonna go ahead and stay at this place to super duper dream job comes around.

Anytime you have a chance to make a significant move and 40% is significant it's time to go if family and other things in life don't prevent you from doing it.

HC might be married in 2 years and still stuck at the other place and makes a move like this much more complicated if not impossible .

This is not a lateral move .

What's funny is I brought my current boss in the loop on all of this today. One of his comments was exactly what you are saying - essentially "why leave right now?".

To me, if the question is "why leave now" instead of "why leave at all", that's the sign I need to leave.

You could ask this question anytime. Eventually I have to pull the rip chord.

And the fact that he did not make a serious effort to match your new offer is a pretty good sign that your suspicions about being topped out is accurate.

He's supposedly "running some numbers" and getting back to me tomorrow. They won't be able to get there, and honestly I'm not interested in leveraging this offer. I don't want to work at a place where I keep having to prove my own market value to get more money.

We both know I'm pretty much capped. It's not a suspicion, it's a fact. And it's no one's fault, it's a function of the company size and structure.

I guess that's where we are different because it tells me to stay and reap the rewards yet to come...

what if your days of poker are over with or cut really short with the new job.

I've gotten a 100% raise and about 5 levels of promotions in the last two years in the same industry as you. I'm good, boss, but still may give it up this Summer...

When I was in SA last week for interviews and the new boss was giving me the proverbial "wine and dine", he was telling me all about the home games and poker clubs he plays at on nights and weekends. He's a big card player too, it's one of the things that contributed to us becoming friends back in the day. So I don't see that being an issue. I even asked him if I could install poker software on my company laptop and he said he did with no issue...

To add, I couldn't walk out knowing I have the chance to own something. That's the biggest reward IMO, and where the real answer lies. Sounds like the difference of making a good salary and being well-off and set for life. What are the chances of that happening though, and the risk it doesn't just seems minimal with how easy you can always land another job that pays better (by your own admission).

I'd take a good pay cut to work from home, and I know a lot of others that would. Those that are cut out for it that I know (you seem to be as well) say no way in hell would they go back to a modern office job after their work from home, not even for double salary...

So the 15% increase wouldn't cover boarding the dogs

Did you end up selling the photo booth deal?

I gave it to my sister and she has turned it into the largest photobooth business within 200 miles.

Her husband quit his regular job to help along.

They love it I hated it.

Cant even believe I got into that. I'm about to get into something else much more to my liking on the side.

Thanks, but like you, I hate it, the job, the company, corporate America in general.

In fact, I've decided to hang it up come Memorial Day. I'd love to do a stay at home job (would love to travel also, but that first kiddo is on the way), and hope to find one, even for shitty pay, so if anyone knows any legit ones, reach out...

Well this changes my perspective, didnt know your old boss was involved, that is certainly a huge plus... he is making a team to win it all and he wants you as the new QB... go for it
