It sounds like you are REALLY happy with your current situation, and the only upside to the new offer is financial. It sounds like you are doing well already, and have the potential to do much better when/if the Ownership stake comes, which again you make it seem pretty likely. You also have lots of negatives about San Antonio based on your own experiences, so it's not likely that's gonna change.
Extra money can't buy happiness, unless it's totally life changing money, which this doesn't sound like, and again, it seems you are really happy. Tough choice, but it seems you're trying to talk yourself into staying, so that's probably what you want to do deep down. Good luck whichever way you go.

BOL Harry, I would never trade working from home and being one of the top players in your company to doing 40 hours in some office with some people you dont have an idea if you'll get along with... from what we have spoken before sounds you are financially super stable and also, your current employers have made very good efforts to keep you and to help you have a better life, that respect and that appreciation, that is worth way more than any sign bonus or tax cuts. I wish you the best, the loyal and respectable thing would be staying IMO.

I agree with you two...stay put, Harry, and reap the bigger benefits yet to come...

As someone that settled in SA after stints in Tampa, LA and Phoenix, hopefully I can help provide some insight. Like any larger city, location is key. I live in the Leon Springs area (north of the 1604/10 area that Alwayzright mentioned), and it is a pretty nice area to live, right on the footsteps of the hill country. I work down in the 410/San Pedro area, traffic is not too bad since they widened the 10, can usually get to work in about 30 minutes. The "no state income" tax benefit is largely offset by the fact that property taxes are really high relative to the other areas that I have lived (moot point if you plan to rent, but rents are also inflated due to the large number of people moving into the area due to the strength of the economy.) Sales tax is 8.125%, which is also higher than other areas that I have lived, so take that into consideration. The city has a much slower pace than some of the other markets in Texas, which fit my stage in life (married with 2 kids), so if you are looking for a vibrant nightlife, you may be disappointed. The drivers throughout the state of Texas are downright nasty; tailgating in oversized pickup trucks is the norm, nobody bothers to use turn signals, yield signs are largely ignored, and expect to get cutoff by 2-3 assholes everytime you drive somewhere. Not sure if you plan on moving with kids, but schools are either hit or MISS, private schools require serious consideration. Airport is small for a large city, so direct flights to many destinations don't exist. Climate is HOT for most of the year, and area can be rough for those that suffer from allergies (mountain cedar is brutal.) Overall, I have been pretty satisfied my time here. If I were single, don't know that it would be my first choice. If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll try to help. Good luck and congrats on the offer.

WTF, where are you going in Birmingham? Traffic here is almost non-existent. You sure you're not thinking of Atlanta?

Thank you for taking to the time to share this. This is the general feel I get for the city too. I forgot to even mention how atrocious it is to even try to drive anywhere; worst drivers in the world.

I'm divorced with no kids, so none of that is a concern. I also don't drink, so a vibrant night life is not important to me.

I'm aware of the heat and it doesn't bother me, it's hotter than Alabama but drier.

I 65 can be a bitch.
There is much worse then Birmingham but SA much better especially considering how much bigger it is then Birmingham .

And comparing SA to Dallas and Houston is no contest .

Those 2 are ridiculous . SA is much better Layed out and much more personality then Dallas and Houston.

And it's a very clean city .

For some reason it don't feel nearly as big as it really is.

San Antonio is the largest convention city in the world besides Las Vegas.
So many great opportunities in that town .

Funny you mention that. I occasionally suffer from Asthmatic Allergies, to certain trees and animal molds. I was in San Antonio once in my life, during the early autumn, and it was the single worst allergy experience I ever had, since I was a little kid and first developed allergies. I could hardly breathe for the 4 days I was there. Loved the City itself, but the allergies were debilitating, and I never went back.

I don't find the drivers here to be that bad. I was in Memphis over the last week, and the tailgaters there were much worse.

Yah....After driving 20 years in DFW which is heavily freeway based, I just resolved to accept that Anything Can Happen at Anytime, so just roll with it or else I burn minutes (hours/dayz) of my life complaining about something that absolutely will not change.

15% raise into a city with a lower cost of living and no state tax, and a higher 401k match, is a pretty significant bump...signing bonus aside.

Plus a lot of opportunity for career advancement there. I've been bumping up against the ceiling at my current work for years. I am almost guaranteed to never make any more money than I do today (minus cost of living and inflation raises), because there are no promotions to be had. Only way to get more is ownership stake.

Also I should clear up that working out of an office is not necessarily a complete detractor. It is a super nice office with on-site gym, dog parks, multiple dining options, tons of hot chicks. Honestly working from home gets a little boring sometimes, I go a little stir crazy. I worked from home 100% for the last 2.5 years. Given the fact I don't drink or party, my life is fucking boring working from home so much...no socialization.

I'm mostly worried with the city, and not liking it there. I have visited San Antonio roughly 40 times for business (my company does work there), and I just never dug it. I have been to the Riverwalk, all around the city, New Braunfels waterparks, suburbs...I know the area pretty well. It doesn't feel like home, it's hard to explain.

assuming you're entering your mid 30s (or older) no city you move to will ever feel like home, no matter how good/bad it is. At least that's my experience. Myself and people I know have relocated and we all kinda say the same thing, and all love the cities we are in. Could be totally different than your situation or the things you are looking for, just though that this was worth mentioning.

I have a question that has not been asked yet.
Were you actively looking for other options or did this offer pretty much fall into your lap?

If you were looking for better options that could be your subconscious telling you that you are ready for a new challenge.

While more money is always good, how comfortable are you today? If you are already set for retirement, can do whatever you want within reason and love your job, more money isn't going to make you that much happier. But if you are making $50K a year, a 40% overall increase is huge. But if you are making $150K and are single, while more money won't hurt what will you really do differently? And if you can buy a nicer car, a bigger house but don't love your job which you spend so much time at, then I wouldn't do it.

I love my job and I like you am pretty topped out at where I can go (work at a company of about 500) which is also a good problem to have. Many that work for me would love my job and pay. I could relocate and get an increase in a bigger city but I already can do what I want, when I want and my family is taken care of. I also invest wisely so have 4 million when I retire vs 5 isn't that big of a deal. I wouldn't turn down money but I wouldn't move for an increase unless "maybe" it would double my salary.

You are single though I'm not so it would take me even more to move and more to think about. Either way, it's good that you are marketable so if this job isn't the right fit for due to location, keep window shopping because this isnt the only job out there and look until to you find one that feels 100% right and if not, like you said you love your job so that is a great position to be in.

Good luck

Honestly I don't give a fuck about your opinion. I was addressing the adults here. So you can stop wasting time replying to this thread, unless you want to continue to carry on a conversation with yourself.

And since all my posts are about JC, that was some funny shit right there

I wasn't looking, they found me. Hiring manager is my old boss. He's been trying to recruit me for a couple years now, this is the first job that caught my eye, both from a job duty perspective and a pay perspective.

I'm in between. I make a lot more than 50 but I'm not rich either.

Let's put it this way; I am currently comfortable but I would definitely feel the difference. I wouldn't even live in a nicer home or drive a nicer car - I'm good there. Would travel more and save more. And probably expand my wardrobe 300% (having to work from the office as opposed to home).
