Is there any legit proof that American cars are inferior?

I had a 76 maverick w/a V8. You had to disconect the motor mounts and jack up the back of the engine to change the spark plugs. Wasn't my problem because it was a company car.

<NITF>TOM: To use a fairly neutral source, the latest automotive issue of Consumer Reports named the top vehicles in 10 categories. They evaluated more than 200 new cars for such qualities as ride, handling, safety and reliability. Nine of their top 10 picks are Japanese. One is American (the Ford Focus)

To be fair, UK owners of the Ford Focus I have spoken to speak very highly of it.

On the flipside, Ford spares are apparently very expensive nowadays, on a par with any of the quality marques.

I had a buddy with one of those in high school. It was like driving a rocket sled with that V8 powering less than 2000 lbs of car.

All the Toyotas I've owned over the years sold me on Japanese cars. I'd buy like a 77 Corolla in the late 80's-early 90's with 200k on it for like $300, drive it 50k more miles with a few oil changes over those miles.

Toyotas rust out, I prefer Hondas now... but still like an F-150 for a truck.

I can't picture this, but.... almost believe it.

Sweet Zeus.

Consider yourself lucky that your parents made it out of the 70's alive. Not only are the Vega and Pinto two of the worst cars ever made, people died because of the shitty engineering and quality of these pieces of garbage.

Pinto was a fairly reliable car overall, except for the problem of going up in flames in a collision because of the gas tank problems.

They had a Chevette too, real clunker of a car ! The Vega was awful ( aluminum block).

There was a Nova( decent) in there before the the Pinto, something like a Dodge Aspen after the Pinto/Vega 70's years, then they went Olds Cutlass before they died. I vaguely remember an Impala when I was very young. They probably had an Edsel, too ? :lolBIG:

I don't recall a single foreign car, or anything not bought new, or anything that went 100k miles, before falling apart. ( maybe the 1976 Pinto ?) I think my dad still had that one in 1993, when he died.

My Dart was great, but I went Jap after that. Got burnt bad on a Ford Courier with like 50k on it in the 80's.... awful truck. Had a 70 Dodge truck and a 66 Ford after that.... both sweet. A 93 F-150 bought used served me up another 100k miles.

I love my 2000 F-150 4X4, bought it a year ago for <5k with 105k on it, runs great, looks great.

I like a car/truck that has been running for a long time. I really loved the 66 Ford Truck, that I bought about in 1991, but killed it driving 100 miles a day in Vegas as a work truck.
