smoking fucks up alot more than your lungs, increases your risk for a heart attack multiple times over and can cause numerous other problems too. plus think of all the cash you are throwing away, if you quit smoking you could probably go on multiple more vacations a year for free. never saw the point in smoking, its not social, atleast with drinking you can make a night out of it

I understand what you are saying... I really do
and I understand that it's not just your Lungs that I need to watch.
I go for my yearly physical exam Every Year for the past 27 years... Top to Bottom
Blood work and all.
and I like to take a Stress Test every 3 Years.....So I do watch out for myself.

My Doctor always says , I have to tell you anyway to Stop Smoking... I tell him, other than Gambling... Smoking is my only vice. Not a Big Drinker.. Don't do Drugs ( at least not for the past 29 years )

I also have no Family History of Heart disease or Cancer ( Knock on Wood )

Some day I Will quit... Just not ready Yet.

As far as the Money I spend on Smokes... I get most when I travel to the Islands
which is about 1/4 of what they cost here in NY. Or I get them in Vegas and Florida which are less than half.
Would I save Money ?? of course I would... But again, it's really my Only Vice.

Will smoking Kill me ? Maybe.... I could also walk out my door and get hit by a Car....

Again, when I'm ready I will Quit... it might come in a Year, maybe be 5 years ??

I'm 71 and I have lots of opinions. First opinion is that if you think you're old, then you're already old. I like to refer to myself as a punk kid yet. Second opinion is that most people take way too many prescription drugs. The Doctors and Drug Companies push them on everyone. I take no prescription Drugs ... never have. Third opinion is stay active and keep your body moving doing something that's fun ! I'm on the go all the time whether it's walking, running, fishing or traveling. Fourth and perhaps most important.... Stop fretting over things you can't do nothing about. Traffic, aging, gambling losses, Relationships that have gone sour, whatever ! Life is too short to live in a bad relationship. Lastly, take care of your body. I try to eat healthy, exercise, drink Red Wine, Stay away from the Carbs and Sugars. I just got back from a fishing trip in Utah and am looking forward to hiking down the Black Canyon on the Sevier River in Utah and catching some huge German Browns in another week or so. If the Lord calls me home while I'm reeling in a big one, so be it !

Agree on the prescription Drugs as well. It's rare if I take them.
Had Back surgery 8 years ago and they gave me Pain Pills while I mend. I was in the hospital for a day so I took them. Sent me home with a prescription, I threw it out.

ALSO.... I Believe in Being YOUNG at Heart and Mind. It's Very Refreshing !

Lost my best friend as a teenager. He died trying to save somebody's life. Crazy to think about all the fun things in missed out on in life. He was a really decent human being. Strange how these things always seem to happen to good people.

Yeah, I'm done thinking about old age.

even shittier when it's something like that, or something you have no control over...battled a lot of depression over it to this day.

Live your life like there is no tomorrow, for one day will be your last.

By the time you're 40 you'll be looking at horrible things Jag....

you might.....

fall and not be able to get, and be stranded there on the floor for days/weeks/ months.....unless you have a lifealert bracelet.....HELP !, I've fallen and I get it up !

At this advanced age you will....

need full hip replacement, might as well do the knees too while you're at it !

In a few more years you'll need a cane, then a walker ( make sure to get the tennis ball cutouts), finally a wheelchair at 55 or so

Oh and at 40 you will be bald, but you will have 6" hairs growing out of your nostrils and ears, on your back, around your anus....even on the soles of your feet.....if your legs haven't been amputated already for some other condition, you'll be OK !

Oh and your toenails turn black and you have no natural teeth left, plus you can break bones getting out of a chair !

Say what you want about smoking, but I'm now 66 and have been smoking since 10 years old. Probably smoking full time at 14. I've never had any health problem until I got type 2 diabetes, and that sure wasn't caused by smoking. I've found that people that quit smoking seem to get lung cancer AFTER they stop. I only smoke at night now, when I get home and onto the PC and have a drink and start gambling. I don't even bring my cigs to work any longer and don't smoke until I get home!

So you suggest that quitting smoking increases your risk of lung cancer ? That's a really far out theory. I smoked a pack a day for over 20 years, quit 1/1/11.

I doubt you can pull up something to document this claim. I used to live in Vista also, BTW ! on Woodrail Drive

Jag: Well it creeps up on you. Most pro athletes are done by 40 in all sports, a baseball pitcher might last until 45, but 40 is 40, and you've lost hat step or edge.....30 in tennis !

Nothing you can do about it, so know need to obsess on it.

I'd love to be 25 again, but I'm 48.5 !

I can't change that

Just accept that you will get weaker, slower , etc. It happens to every human ever born, you ain't no different

Do you ever stop feeling like a kid?

I'm 31 and still feel like a kid at heart. Not sure I will ever have the mentality of being old, similar to what kermit was saying.

Am I still going to feel like a kid at 50, 60?

I have the exact same issue. If its an actual phobia with a name, I'm the poster boy. I'm 38 and i'm in great shape. I constantly dwell on the inevitable though. I just can't come to terms with the fact that I'm an old dude now. I see good looking girls in bars and they say "yes sir" and shit like that to me.

I think my issues have a lot to do with "not sewing all my oats" when i was supposed to. I had to work hard when my peers were all partying. I thought it would make me more of a man, but perhaps its made me more of a head case.

Good Luck man but rest assured that you are not alone with your fear.

20's - you worry about getting old

30's - you worry about death

40's - you worry about the possibility of an afterlife and going to HELL

50's - you worry about cancer or other fatal illness. You want more time to make up to God for your hellish behavior but keep putting it off.

60's - you get up early everyday because you realize you hadn't died in your sleep.

70's - Death is knocking and you move south because you realize you might as well get used to the HOT weather for where your going.

80's - Your DEAD or so close to it you may as well be. You are forgotten but since you refused to to go towards the light you now haunt houses and enjoy scaring people. Then as a spirit you also go peeping Tom women showers at colleges and fitness clubs.

I agree with that last part. Why do you suppose you and I never grew up?

@)

Seriously though, I have slowed down a little bit in the last 10 years and occasionally I have some aches and pains. But for the most part I'm the same person I was when I was in my 20's with the exception that I don't have as much energy. But it's not like I don't have any energy.

It's actually kind of nice to take it easier. I always was a go-getter, over-achiever when I was younger. Now I am enjoying life more.

I think part of my success in health is the fact that I walk 15 minutes 3 to 4 days a week and have for the last 22+ years. That is my monitor on my health. If I have no problems walking then I feel I'm doing ok.

You know its not hard to include walking into your regimen. There are a lot of things you can do and practice.

Park at the furthest spot when you go to any store
Walk to the store or anywhere you may need to go
