You'd likely have been better off with a mortgage and using the lump sum of money to earn more than your interest payments would be over the life of the mortgage...thus bettering your net worth. It's fairly common...even high net worth individuals don't automatically pay large sums of cash for property if what another investment is a better option.

I decided to pay off my homes because I lived in debt for a long time and it was my decision....even though others advised me not to do that. Worked out great for me. Life can't be better I decided to keep my lifestyle the same....with exception of some indulgences. My family is taken care of now and will be when I'm gone and those are because of my decisions. Sorry this is hard for you to deal with.

In all fairness, I'll have all my properties (including my house) paid off very shortly - even though it's probably not the best financial decision. I could make more money taking the cheap loans and investing elsewhere, but the peace of mind of having no debt is worth it to me. And, I have more than enough money to reach my goals for myself and my children - at least as far as their college is concerned.
