FYI: THIS IS A WRITE-UP BY ANOTHER HAWAII CAPPER WHO ONLY CAPS HAWAII GAMES.....HE FADES HAWAII THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME...BUT THIS YEAR, HE SIDED WITH HAWAII TWICE GOING 1-1 (WON VS TULSA, AND LOST VS UTEP).
4-2 (200)
Weekly spiel:
I remember back in 1999 we played Boise State before they joined the WAC. Everyone was like, "Who the hell is this???". Hawaii promptly pummeled them. My how things have changed. Now Boise is Top 25 year in and out, and the cream of the crop.
Let me be the first to say this....Boise has serious questions coming into this game.
Right now, the coaching staff is reviewing tape of Hawaii...and they are in the coaching lounge asking themselves, "Should we run these guys into the ground for 450 yards and 8 touchdowns? Or should we throw all over them for 500 yards and 8 touchdowns???". Seriously, the Boise State staff is either salivating at the chops or in bewilderment at how bad their WAC rival's defense has become.
Bottom line, Boise State can name their score, it will only be determined by how merciful they choose to be.
It's bend over and grab your ankles time for Hawaii. I just hope they have lubrication for this one.
A quick rant:
This is a lame rant, but I know ALL of you have wondered about it. Why the hell is BSU's fricking field Blue?? When I play this game on Playstation NCAA 2004, I can't even see the fricking players.
UH coach Jones mentioned awhile ago when they first went up to play BSU (paraphrased), "Sure, playing on a Blue field with Blue uniforms has an advantage. An opposing QB under pressure/blitz has about 3/10 of a second or just his peripheral vision to go through each receiver to determine which reciever is open. At that speed, it is easy to miss or not discern a defender in the area." Wow. I thought about it. What if Alabama Crimson Tide played on a blood red Crimson field??
The NCAA needs to ban this blue field. Or, when Boise State comes down next year, Hawaii should be play in field turf camouflage green. lol.
Reasons for my pick:
- I mentioned this before. Think of all of Hawaii's big victories during Tim Chang's 5 years here. Alabama, undefeated BYU, and David Carr's top 25 Fresno team. None involved Timmy, rather the second stringers won the game. Timmy notoriously has his worst games on ESPN or "big" games. I believe this qualifies. Only ESPN Friday night game, breaking the record.
- There was a huge drop off in accuracy in Timmy's passes last week. Those watching the game saw him overthrow a lot of receivers. His aggravated non throwing shoulder is messing up his mechanics. He was way more accurate before last week.
- I can talk about it all I want, but it seems this is beaten into the ground. Hawaii has no one on defense left. Besides our assorted basketball players, long snappers, cheerleaders drafted to play defense, this week they are going to try to put some backup offensive players on defense. Hawaii could not stop the worst WAC teams, now they face one of the nation's best? I truly believe Boise will break the 56 point mark.
- Motivation. Hawaii is limping into this game. Boise, all they hear is, "You guys can't stop the pass!". Guess what, what better way to prove they can then by shutting down the guy who is GOING to set the NCAA passing record? Boise is going to shut down everything in a statement game.
- BSU QB Jared Zabransky. Damn this guy is good. I watched the game last week, and even though BSU won, I honestly think Zabransky had his worst game of the year. He fumbled snaps, and looked disconnected at times. He will play better this week.
- Road woes.....Hawaii is miserable on the road. Any win on the road calls for a parade. Think about it, Hawaii will lose, the only question is, "By how much?".
- Talent level. I realize now, Hawaii has none this year. When Timmy Chang is the best player on the roster you know you are in trouble. Like the triple option run by the academies for smaller, less athletic players, the run and shoot oftentimes hides the lack of talent. We have small, slow receivers, with no hands (except Chad Owens). Look for at LEAST 6 dropped passes.
- Latest BCS polls. Check the Idaho newspaper yourselves. They talk about Utah, only non-BCS team to break the Top 6. Boise knows now it is possible, and they have been shown the way. Boise is oh so close. Pounding Hawaii in a nationally televised game will help them get more AP and Coach's votes.
It kinda makes me bitter to play this. But it seems as clear as day to me. I hate laying points period, 21 1/2 is ridiculous....But, the oddsmakers are wrong on this one (or maybe right since they made it so big).....they can't make a spread big enough for me.
Boise kicks off, stops Hawaii, scores. Boise kicks off, stops Hawaii, scores, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.
Boise State 63 Hawaii 20
Boise State -21 1/2 1100 to win 1000
Who knows, hopefully I am totally wrong and my alma mater pulls off a huge upset.
