I have been very critical of the US squad and don’t think they are a very strong side. I balked at some of the better players coming back to the MLS, a league that barely scratches the top ten domestic leagues in the world.
I thought the US was outplayed by Ghana for the majority of the match and had a dismal showing versus Germany where they provided zero threat of scoring. It’s possible some of their play was dictated by the situation, an early goal versus and Ghana and the prospect of advancing versus Germany even with a loss. Despite my concerns with the team/roster and depth of talent, I am a fan of Klinsmann and his approach. He does seem to have the team believing and is getting the most out of the players, at least a big portion of them. Bradley has been horrendous this tournament, but he needs to turn that around today for the US to have a reasonable chance.
Even with all that being said, I like the US today, but the play is almost entirely a play against Belgium rather than for the US. Belgium has been a mess IMO, which is funny to say since they won all three matches. I thought they were outplayed for long stretches in all three matches and have the look of a bunch of individual talent that doesn’t play well together. Hazard has been horrid, Lukaku looks completely lost and the offensive has been very patchy, broken and lacking in any fluidity. I chalk this up to the coach, who appears to have no strategy and continually makes personnel mistakes.
I’m holding off pulling the trigger until I see the lineups, as some of the younger Belgium talent scares me more than the expected starters. Based on Wilmots history, I expect him to not make many, if any, changes.
Don’t get me wrong, if Belgium is clicking they would destroy the US. On paper, the talent and difference in class is immense. I just don’t see a side flipping the proverbial switch after three lackluster performances.
