I don't think this is his 5th year, certainly not full years. Last year was only a half year because of the knee injury. I don't think a major injury early in a players career constitutes a player being a bust. he just needs a little more time and he'll be all right

Patterson only had 42 ab in 2000 131 ab in 2001 so he ws essentially a minor leaguer those 2 years. Rookie year wasn't very good in 02 but he was showing great promise in 03 when he got hurt 83 games 13hr 55 rbi 298 average plus a great defensive player and can steal bases. So thats why I have hope for him because he was looking pretty good until the injury. sometimes it takes at tleast a year before your close to 100 %. Call it a excuse if you want

Red Eye,
Technically, it is his 5 th year in the majors but of course they weren't full years because of injuries and of course his pathetic performance in much of the 5 years. Once again... .263 lifetime average for a center fielder means only 1 thing to me.... go back to the minors where your belong until you learn how to hit !

he's only got about 2 years worth of at bats for those 5 years. He had a real good start to 03 and thats where is promise as a future good player should be not a cup of coffee in 2000,01 and a bad rookie year.A bust is a player that lasts for 3 or 4 years, not a guy who's had 2 full years and is only 24. This guy will be 10 year vet at the minimum and possibly a all star

Tonight, Patterson: 3-5 (2 bunt hits), double, run, walk, stolen base. BA up to .276. CPat will be a .300 hitter. 5 tool player. He's a keeper.

I hope that He bats .600 the rest of the season but the fact remains that so far He has been pathetic for a center fielder and one good night doesn't change anything unless He can continue to hit. He is still a career .263 hitter and even worse He strikes out almost every 4 th ab which leaves him with obp of only .301 Go Cubs !

I don't care about his career avg. What I care about is what he does now and going forward. 6-13 in the leadoff hole since Nomar including 3 bunt hits. If he gets down those bunts there's no stopping hit. Can't defend that. Plus it brings in the infielders in for him to blast it by. He has a very good swing and quick hands. His issue has always been, and still is to some extent, expanding the strike zone especially on pitches up. As he learns to take those pitches he will get better and better. Probably 27 managers out of 30 would love to have CPat in CF to build for the future. Great defense, can throw, runs like the wind and has some pop. He will be a .300+, 15+HR, 40+SB, leadoff hitter CF starting next year. Patterson, Nomar, Sosa, Ramirez, Lee = deadly.

Its a good thing this forum wasn't around in the late eighties because we would have heard Kermit say that his boy, Bonds, was a bust too.His career average after 4 years without getting my calculater out looked close to Pattersons average or less, and he didn't even have a serious injury. But No excuses. His stats after 4 FULL years wasn't very impressive at all including striking out often himself. Get off Patterson he is a future star. By the way Pattersons average 276 bot great but above team average I believe. Only 1 error all year too

Red Eye, very nice point about Bonds and before anyone jumps on it I'll make it clear for you that you are not suggesting Patterson will hit 686 HR's in his career. The point is that it takes some guys a few years to hone in on the strike zone. That's why a good scout looks beyond raw average. A good scout would be drooling over Corey right now. By the way, I wasn't always sold on Corey, but I am now and very glad the Cubs stuck with him. Rewards will be reaped for many years to come.

Red Eye & D2,
Alright you guys... I give up... You got me on the last argument regarding comparison between Bonds and Patterson ! Also, I hope you guys are so correct and that I will have egg all over my face because I am a Cub fan and I hope Patterson hits 800 home runs before He's done ! See you guys at the bash and I'll buy you both a drink !

just my two cents but, as a hitter, corey patterson is a lot closer to shawon dunston than barry bonds.

Not so fast Cubs fans. You guys are so predictable. Well here's a familiar prediction....Wait Till Next Year. Cardinals remain the team to beat in the NL.

Looks like Prior and Wood may both be back in form. That sound you hear is the collective groan from NL managers. They got where they are now already with almost nothing from those guys. 4-0 in the Nomar era. The Cubbies are a force to be reckoned with. Don't expect them to beat Schmidt tomorrow night however.

1-4 starters nobody is better and if the bullpen does their part, I like their chances alot. I would love to see Nomar get a championship in Chicago.
