Dana White doesn’t believe Conor is retiring, open to putting him back on UFC 200
UFC President Dana White appeared on Colin Cowherd’s sports talk show The Herd on Wednesday to discuss the latest breaking news surrounding the UFC’s biggest event and its biggest superstar, Conor McGregor.
Yesterday, the featherweight champion sent the mixed martial arts world into a frenzy after a tweet suggesting that he would be retiring early. Shortly after that message, Dana White appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter to deliver a massive message which stated McGregor was being pulled off UFC 200 for refusing to fulfill media obligations. Today, the UFC boss was a guest on Cowherd’s show to address the issues at hand.
Dana White made it very clear early in the interview that there was no strain in the relationship between McGregor and the UFC while dispelling the notion that the entire situation has taken place due to money issues. Dana stated that Conor didn’t want to do the media tour which was planned to take place in Las Vegas, Stockton, and New York. “I’m not asking Conor to do something that other fighters aren’t doing,” said White. He went on to make the comparison of the popular TV show Empire, and if Terrance Howard, the star of the show, decided to not promote the show would be similar to Conor not promoting UFC 200.
Colin Cowherd asked White directly if he believes that Conor is retiring, to which he simply replied, “I do not.”
While the Dana does not believe McGregor will be retiring, he did address the possibility of what would happen if he does decide to go through with it:
Conor needs to clean this up fast, otherwise, Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar are fighting for the vacant featherweight title.”
Dana would go on to state that the UFC plans on spending around $10 million dollars to promote UFC 200 and having Conor being a part of the promotion was absolutely necessary. With the announcement of McGregor being pulled from the biggest card of 2016, there has been rampant speculation over the past 24 hours over potential matchups to replace McGregor vs. Diaz. Colin Cowherd addressed this by asking White if there was any possibility of Conor McGregor being added back on to the UFC 200 card to which White replied,
“Yeah, if he called me after this interview we would probably still do it.”
While it would seem Conor gets away with a lot more than other fighters would, White also directly answered this concern:
“We give Conor a lot of leeway because Conor delivers.”
When you’re as big of a star as Conor McGregor, you seemingly have the advantage of doing things a little differently than the rest of the crowd, however, the UFC still calls the shots and had to put their foot down in this instance.
“Conor delivers, but he wasn’t planning on delivering this weekend, and I had to pull him. It’s what had to be done.”
