WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) Conor Sheary scored twice, including the winner with 1:42 left, to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin also scored for Pittsburgh while Matt Murray stopped 25 shots in his first home start since Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. Sidney Crosby was held without a point but helped begin the sequence that set up Sheary for the go-ahead goal.

Edmonton star Connor McDavid assisted on all three Oiler goals, more than holding his own against Crosby, his childhood idol. Jordan Eberle scored twice and Patrick Maroon picked up his fifth of the season. Cam Talbot made 27 saves but couldn't make a two-goal lead stand up.

Pittsburgh got the late lead when Edmonton forward Benoit Pouliot's clear attempt smacked off Sheary and into the net.

The Penguins won their fourth straight and remained unbeaten in regulation (6-0-1).

JETS 8, STARS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Patrik Laine took the NHL lead in goals with the second hat trick of his rookie season, lifting Winnipeg over Dallas.

Laine has 11 goals and 15 points this season. Linemate Mark Scheifele had two goals and two assists and leads the NHL with 18 points, just ahead of Edmonton's Connor McDavid and Chicago's Artem Anisimov.

Marko Dano, Andrew Copp and Adam Lowry also scored for Winnipeg while Nikolaj Ehlers, Nic Petan and Tyler Myers each had two assists.

Patrick Eaves and Tyler Seguin scored for Dallas.

Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves in his third straight start for Winnipeg. Dallas netminder Kari Lehtonen was replaced by Antti Niemi after Laine's third goal. He had let in four goals on 11 shots. Niemi finished with 15 saves.

SHARKS 3, CAPITALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Martin Jones stopped 24 shots, Brent Burns scored his fifth goal of the season and San Jose ended the Washington's five-game winning streak.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Burns had second-period goals for the Sharks, who had lost three straight. It was Jones' 14th career shutout and the first of the season for the defending Western Conference champions, who scored only four goals during their three-game skid.

Joe Thornton added an empty-netter with 1:32 left.

CANADIENS 3, BRUINS 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Carey Price stopped 41 shots, Paul Byron scored with 1:02 left and Montreal beat Boston.

Byron poked in a loose puck after Alexander Radulov passed it into the crease. The goal stood after a video review.

Shea Weber and Alex Galchenyuk also scored for Montreal, which got a second straight win since a 10-0 defeat in Columbus on Friday night.

Colin Miller and David Pastrnak scored for the Bruins, who still had legs in the third period despite playing a back-to-back after a 4-0 victory Monday night over Buffalo.

Rookie Zane McIntyre had 20 saves for Boston.

KINGS 7, MAPLE LEAFS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Jeff Carter scored twice during a four-goal second period, Peter Budaj made 19 saves and Los Angeles thumped Toronto.

Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli added goals in the second period and Dustin Brown, Kyle Clifford and Dwight King also scored. Los Angeles has won three straight.

Toronto goalie Frederik Andersen allowed four goals on 26 shots, and then Jhonas Enroth came on and made 14 saves.

The Kings had the bulk of the chances in the first period, scoring with 6:04 left in the period on Brown's second this year. Third-line center Nic Dowd did the dirty work, controlling the puck down low before finding Brown atop the left faceoff circle.

PREDATORS 3, SENATORS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - James Neal and P.K. Subban each had a goal and an assist to lead Nashville over Ottawa.

Ryan Ellis also scored for Nashville, and Pekka Rinne made 33 saves. The Predators had lost their previous two games in shootouts.

Kyle Turris scored and Craig Anderson made 27 saves for Ottawa, which has lost consecutive games.

Nashville has defeated the Senators in five of the last six matchups.

RED WINS 3, FLYERS 2, SO

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Andreas Athanasiou tied it midway through the third period and had the only score in the shootout, helping Detroit snap a five-game losing streak.

Tomas Tatar also scored for Detroit, which ended a 12-game regular season losing streak in Philadelphia dating to Jan. 25, 1997. The Red Wings did win the first two games of the 1997 Stanley Cup Final in Philadelphia on their way to a four-game sweep.

Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux scored and Jakub Voracek had a pair of assists for the Flyers.

In the shootout, all three Philadelphia skaters - Travis Konecny, Giroux and Voracek - missed.

Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots for Detroit. Steve Mason had 33 saves.

CANUCKS 5, RANGERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Alexandre Burrows scored twice in the third period to help Vancouver end a nine-game losing streak.

Henrik Sedin and Sven Baertschi each had a goal and an assist, and Loui Eriksson also scored for the Canucks, who were 0-8-1 with eight straight regulation losses since opening the season with four wins.

Bo Horvat had two assists and Jacob Markstrom finished with 23 saves.

Rick Nash, Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad scored for the Rangers, who had won five straight while scoring at least five goals in each game. Buchnevich also had two assists.

Antti Raanta stopped 20 shots, though he left for 6:19 in the third period after being run into by the Canucks' Markus Granlund. Regular starter Henrik Lundqvist made four saves on six shots while filling in.

DEVILS 3, HURRICANES 2, SO

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - PA Parenteau and Taylor Hall scored in the shootout, and New Jersey rallied to defeat Carolina.

Parenteau and rookie Nick Lappin scored in regulation for the Devils, who beat Carolina for the second time in three days. Cory Schneider had 31 saves, including an outstanding glove stop on Sebastian Aho with 1:48 left in the third period.

Jordan Staal and defenseman Klas Dahlbeck scored for Carolina. Cam Ward was outstanding in making 39 saves, including a 1-on-1 stop against Travis Zajac in the waning seconds of the 5-minute overtime.

COYOTES 4, AVALANCHE 2

DENVER (AP) - Jordan Martinook scored two goals, Max Domi had a goal and two assists and Arizona beat Colorado.

Anthony DeAngelo added a goal in his NHL debut for the Coyotes, who improved to 2-6 on the road. Radim Vrbata had two assists and Louis Domingue stopped 25 shots.

Arizona won for the third time in four games after opening the season 2-6.

Wednesday’s six-pack

NFL trends with Week 10 hovering on the horizon……

— Cleveland is 6-15-1 in its last 22 games as an underdog.

— Dallas Cowboys won/covered their last seven games.

— Washington covered nine of its last 12 games.

— Buccaneers are 3-9 vs spread in their last 12 games.

— Jaguars are 6-13-1 in last 20 games as a home underdog.

— Cincinnati is 21-10-3 vs NFC teams; Giants are 5-1 vs the AFC.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

One personal note before I start today; two people who I thought were friends of mine stopped talking to me during the last few months because of the Presidential election— I wouldn’t vote for the person they support.

I didn’t and still don’t understand that: I dislike both candidates, so I lost two “friends” for being impartial. Guess they weren’t friends after all. So be it. Life is too short for such BS.

On to mid-week musings……..

13) NFL teams are 17-9 vs spread this year in the game before their bye week; they’re 9-5-2 vs spread coming off a bye.

12) Cincinnati Bengals are 1-12 in their last 13 visits to New Jersey, 0-3 against the Giants, 1-9 against Jets. They started this season in the Garden State with a 23-22 against the Jets.

11) Replay official in the San Jose State-Boise State game Saturday night was an actual rocket scientist, much like Carrot Top’s dad— the madcap comedian’s dad worked for NASA.

10) Yoenis Cespedes opted out of the last two years of his, 2-year, $47.5M deal with the Mets, so he thinks he can do better than that.

How much money do you really need? Unless he does not like playing for the Mets, I’d take their $47.5M and be happy. By renegotiating, he is helming his agents more than he his helping himself.

9) Showtime’s supposed documentary on Ben Simmons was a major disappointment; it was more of an infomercial than a documentary.

How do you do a 90-minute movie about a basketball player and not talk to his high school or college coach? I don’t care what his parents or his hangers-on think; none of them will ever utter a discouraging word, lest they offend the meal ticket.

Ben Simmons made becoming a multi-millionaire sound like quite a pain in the butt— lot of people wouldn’t mind changing places with him.

8) SEC West is 9-1 vs SEC East this year, with only loss Kentucky’s win over Mississippi State.

7) Colorado Rockies hired Bud Black as manager, Arizona hired Torey Lovullo. Glad to see the Rockies hire a former pitcher as their manager- they’ve got decent young talent.

6) Miami Dolphins haven’t turned ball in their last three games, first that has happened in 19 years- those three games were all at home- their next two games are in southern California. Dolphins are 0-3 on the road this year.

5) Queens College 75, VCU 73— College hoop teams play these exhibitions against teams they’re not supposed to lose to; this is the only one I’ve seen so far this fall where the D-I team lost.

4) NFL favorites of 7+ points this year are 17-10-1 vs spread.

3) Ironic that the Buffalo Bills played this Monday night, the night before Election Day. The Pagula family bought the Bills a few years ago, keeping the franchise in western New York.

Their main competition for buying the Bills back then?

Donald Trump.

2) Comedian Don Rickles turned 90 years old this week, so congrats to him on that: I never thought insulting people was all that funny, but people seem to like him.

1— I’m convinced that running a marathon isn’t healthy; no way is running 26 miles at one time good for you. Remember, the person in ancient mythology who made the marathon famous ran 26 miles to deliver an important message- as soon as he delivered the message, he collapsed and died.

If he had stopped on the way and had a burger and fries, he would have survived. Maybe had a milkshake, too.

Thursday’s six-pack

College football trends for Week 10..……

— Underdogs covered last five NC State-Syracuse games.

— Auburn lost its last four visits to Georgia.

— Kentucky is 2-7 vs spread in its last nine games at Tennessee.

— Underdogs covered six of last eight Stanford-Oregon games.

— Michigan lost its last three visits to Iowa; Wolverines’ last win in Iowa City was in ’05.

— Underdogs are 10-4 vs spread in last 14 Oregon State-UCLA games.

Thursday’s List of 13: College basketball thoughts……..

Vacation is over; time for me to get back to work, with college basketball tipping off Friday night– ton of games. Here are some random preseason thoughts:

13) Blue Ribbon Magazine’s top 4 teams: Duke-Oregon-Kansas-Kentucky. They have defending champ Villanova at #5, Louisville at #8, Saint Mary’s all the way up at #17.

12) Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s have dominated the WCC so much that four of the other eight teams changed coaches last spring. Former NBA players Damon Stoudamire/Terry Porter are at Pacific/Portland, but Herb Sendek at Santa Clara is the best of the new WCC hires.

11) UNLV has almost a whole new team; they’ve had four head coaches in the last 10 months, but Marvin Menzies will do well there, eventually. Problem is, Rebels only had 3 or 4 players left by time he got the job- the work he did to re-stock the roster in the spring was impressive. Menzies can recruit, so as long as he avoids one/done-type kids, UNLV will be back soon.

10) Johnny Dawkins went from Stanford to Central Florida; his son transferred from Michigan to join him at UCF, Jerod Haase left behind a solid team at UAB to replace Dawkins at Stanford.

9) Mike Dunleavy Sr has coached 1,400 NBA games, but zero college games; he is the new coach at Tulane. Wonder if it’ll help his recruiting that his son is Lebron James’ teammate with the Cavaliers? Dunleavy Sr will do just fine on his own, but the AAC is pretty tough.

8) Jamie Dixon wasn’t feeling appreciated at Pitt, so he went back to his alma mater TCU, which has new facilities but has an uphill climb in the brutal Big X. Dixon has recruited his butt off so far and the Horned Frogs may be on the rise.

Kevin Stallings went 66-54 in SEC games the last few years at Vanderbilt, but the natives at Vandy got restless for more, so Stallings replaced Dixon at Pitt and Bryce Drew bolted Valparaiso and a likely Horizon League champ to become Vandy’s new coach.

7) Yale won the Ivy league LY for the first time since 1962, but their best returning player Makai Mason is already out for the year (foot). Mason had 31 against Baylor in the NCAAs.

Ivy League joined the 21st century and will have a 4-team conference tournament this year, so the upper half of the league in the regular season gets to play in the conference tournament.

6) UConn-Cincinnati-SMU are expected to be the best teams in the AAC. Tim Jankovich takes over at SMU for Larry Brown, who skipped town early, as usual. Jankovich is a very good coach so the Mustangs are OK.

5) NC State had a great recruiting year; their new 7-footer Omer Yurtseven from Europe isn’t eligible until Dec 15 but the Wolfpack will hold their own in the 15-team ACC. Josh Pastner has a total rebuild at Georgia Tech after leaving a toxic situation at Memphis. ACC is really tough; Pitino-Williams-Krzyzewski-Boeheim-Bennett, all in the same league and thats leaving out Larranaga and Mike Brey, who are also really good coaches.

4) It still bothers me that half the Big East is in western Ohio or further west, but Xavier is supposed to be really good this year, right behind defending national champ Villanova. I was in Las Vegas for the national title game LY; what a fun night that was, with the two 3-pointers hit in the last 0:10 changing the fortunes of various investors in the room. Good stuff. Curious to see how St John’s is in Chris Mullin’s second year at his alma mater.

3) Five different teams have won the Big Sky title in the last decade; 20 of the league’s top 30 scorers are back from LY. This is as good as the league has been in years, with so many really good returning players. North Dakota is supposed to challenge perennial kingpins Weber State and Montana for the conference championship.

2) For some bizarre reason, the Big 14 is having its conference tournament in Washington DC this year (I know, Maryland is in the league, but still….); the ACC is having its tournament in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn- there are no ACC teams in the NY/NJ area. The A-14 will have its tournament in Pittsburgh, which seems like a bad idea.

1— For me, there are three great Opening Days: baseball, NFL, college hoop. Good twinbill from Hawai’i on Friday; ESPN’s 24-hour marathon starts Monday night. Lot of games to watch, boxscores to look over, things to learn.

Order some pizzas and enjoy the games!!!
