MONTREAL (AP) Carey Price made 42 saves for his first shutout of the season and the Montreal Canadiens beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-0 on Wednesday night to extend their winning streak to eight games.

Nathan Beaulieu, Torrey Mitchell and Alexander Radulov, into an empty net, scored for Montreal. At 9-0-1, the Canadiens are the only undefeated NHL team in regulation time this season. Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher each had two assists.

Ryan Miller made 19 saves for the Canucks. They are winless in five games and 4-5-1 overall.

Price made more than 40 saves for the first time this season, topping his previous high of 38.

FLYERS 4, RED WINGS 3, OT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Mark Streit tied it with 1:02 left in regulation and Jakub Voracek scored in overtime to lift Philadelphia past Detroit.

Voracek completed Philadelphia's comeback by finishing a 2-on-1 with Claude Giroux 1:41 into the 3-on-3 overtime. The assist extended Giroux's points streak to a career-high 10 games.

Chris VandeVelde and Roman Lyubimov also scored to help the Flyers run their regular-season home winning streak against the Red Wings to 12 games.

Henrik Zetterberg, Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou scored for Detroit.

PENGUINS 5, DUCKS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Kris Letang scored a power-play goal and had an assist in his return from an upper-body injury, Matthew Murray stopped 32 shots in his season debut, and the Penguins defeated the Ducks.

Patrick Hornqvist, Bryan Rust, Matt Cullen and Evgeni Malkin also scored for the Penguins, who improved to 7-2-1 despite not having Murray to start the season after breaking his hand during the World Cup of Hockey.

Ducks goaltender John Gibson made 29 saves, including stopping a penalty shot by Scott Wilson after being bowled over by the Penguins forward.

Malkin put the Penguins ahead 7:41 into the first period, scoring his sixth goal of the season.

Thursday’s six-pack

NFL trends with Week 9 right around the corner:

— Falcons are 2-14 vs spread in their last 16 games as a favorite.

— Dallas won/covered its last six games.

— Tennessee is 4-12 vs spread in its last 16 games.

— San Francisco is 10-5-1 in last 16 games as a home dog.

— Denver is 21-9 vs spread in its last 30 divisional games.

— Carolina is 3-7 vs spread in its last ten games.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

13) Cubs 8, Indians 7 (10)– Baseball needed this; high drama, a rain delay in extra innings and a big market team (#6 payroll) ending a 108-year title drought. Hopefully they got great TV ratings.

As for Cleveland, well, the Cavaliers won the NBA title in June.

Think about the Miami Marlins, who won the World Series in their 5th year of existence (1997, against the Indians), then a second one six years later, the only two times they’ve made the playoffs.

Indians haven’t won a World Series since 1948; life can be weird.

12) Minnesota Vikings are 5-2, having a good year in the first year in their new domed stadium, but OC Norv Turner suddenly quit on Wednesday, apparently shocking everyone in the organization.

Vikings lost their QB for the season with a knee injury in training camp; they traded a 1st-round pick for Sam Bradford, but scored only 11 offensive TD’s in their first seven games- it is hard to break in a new QB when he arrives after training camp.

New OC Pat Shurmur worked with Bradford in St Louis/Philly; until someone fixes Minnesota’s offensive line, it might not help.

11) Late Tuesday night (very late), I stumbled upon the live broadcast of the final table at the World Series of Poker from Las Vegas, with heads-up play going on for the $8M first prize.

Poker is good TV, in an odd way; I got a research project done in the four hours I had it on. Finally went to bed at 5:20am, as one of the analysts, pro poker player Antonio Esfandiari, was bemoaning how passive the player who was behind was playing.

10) First prize was $8,005,310; second place was $4,661,228, so they were playing heads-up for $3,344,082. Over 6,000 people started in the Main Event back in July. Quite an accomplishment to win it. Or finish 2nd.

9) Big 14 is going to televise six Friday night games next season, which is going to be controversial because major colleges have traditionally left Friday nights to high school games.

8) Was sitting in a bar having lunch the other day and a college golf tournament was on TV; college golfers carry their own golf bags and those bags are a lot smaller than ones PGA golfers use.

7) Redskins’ OT Trent Williams is suspended for four games; those games are against: Vikings-Packers-Cowboys-Cardinals.

Williams is Washington’s best lineman- this isn’t good for them.

6) There are “Make America Great Again” hats on EBay, signed by Donald Trump that are selling for anywhere from $500-800. What a country.

5) Sacramento Kings lost in OT at Miami Tuesday, their 15th loss in a row in south Florida. Sacramento is better this year but DeMarcus Cousins has trouble controlling his emotions, and as a result, he gets hosed on key calls. His sixth foul in this game was an offensive foul call that was just terrible.

4) CFL schedule gets weird sometimes; it is 20 weeks long, with each team getting two byes. Ottawa-Winnipeg play twice a year; this year’s meetings are in Weeks 19-20; who thought that was a good idea?

3) I’ll sound old saying this, but it is true; our society has gotten ridiculously soft. NBA teams now routinely rest players if team has games on consecutive nights.

Why? AAU teams play as many as three teams in a day; I don’t see any kids collapsing from exhaustion. But pros don’t want to play some guys two nights in a row. Oy.

Ron Boone is a broadcaster for the Utah Jazz; when he played, and he played damn well (16 pts/game in his career) he played in every one of his team’s 1,041 games and schedules in the 70’s were lot different than now; no charters, some 3 games/3 nights stretches.

People nowadays pay serious money to watch these guys play; they deserve a good show.

2) Quote of the Day #2:
“I’m a professional athlete. What professional athlete don’t have a gun? I have a wife and I have a son at home. My job is to protect them at all costs, and my job is to protect myself as well even though I know I have security here, but I have to protect myself as well.”
Eagles WR Josh Huff, with an ominous quote

1— More from Mr Huff:
“I’m from Houston. You can’t trust a lot of people in Houston. There’s always somebody out to get you. You’ve got to protect yourself. Even when I’m back in Houston, I always have a gun on me, because there’s been several instances in Houston where I’ve lost a friend to gun violence, and he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, so why would I let that happen to me?”

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Jimmy Hayes scored in the 10th round of a shootout, Tuukka Rask won his sixth straight game to start the season and the Boston Bruins beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Thursday night.

Tampa Bay's Brayden Point and Boston's Riley Nash both scored in the fourth round, but Rask and Andrei Vasilevskiy were strong during the shootout as Boston won 2-1.

Brandon Carlo, Ryan Spooner and David Pastrnak scored in regulation for the Bruins, who finished a 3-1 road trip.

The Lightning got two goals from Tyler Johnson. Victor Hedman had the other Tampa Bay goal in the team's first home game since a 3-3 trip.

CAPITALS 4, JETS 3, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game in overtime, and Washington blew a three-goal lead in the third period but regrouped to beat Winnipeg for its fourth consecutive victory.

The Capitals took a 3-0 lead on goals by Nicklas Backstrom, Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie, only to see it evaporate.

Tobias Enstrom, Adam Lowry and Marko Dano scored in a 9-minute span for the Jets to tie it.

It was the third time in 11 games this season Winnipeg overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime.

Braden Holtby stopped 24 shots to beat the Jets for the second time in three days.

Winnipeg starter Michael Hutchinson made 28 saves.

RANGERS 5, OILERS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Rick Nash scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:21 remaining to lead New York over Western Conference-leading Edmonton.

Nick Holden took a shot from the point that was blocked by Edmonton's Milan Lucic. Nash corralled the loose puck in front of the net and fired it past Oilers goalie Cam Talbot.

Kevin Hayes had a goal and two assists, Michael Grabner and J.T. Miller each had a goal and an assist, and Jesper Fast also scored for the Rangers, who rallied from three one-goal deficits and won for the sixth time in seven games. Holden had two assists and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 21 shots.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Patrick Maroon and Adam Larsson scored for the Oilers, who lost their third straight (0-2-1) after starting the season 7-1-0. Talbot made 26 saves in his first game against the Rangers since being traded to Edmonton on June 27, 2015.

BLACKHAWKS 4, AVALANCHE 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Corey Crawford made 38 saves for his second shutout in three games, leading Chicago past Colorado for its fourth straight victory.

Marian Hossa had two goals, Jonathan Toews also scored and the Blackhawks killed off three more penalties to run their streak to 12 after an awful start to the season for their penalty-killers.

Artemi Panarin added his fifth of the season off a slick pass from Patrick Kane in the third, closing out Chicago's seventh win in nine games overall.

Semyon Varlamov made 17 saves for the Avalanche, who have dropped four of five.

STARS 6, BLUES 2

DALLAS (AP) - Tyler Seguin assisted on Dallas' first four goals against St. Louis.

Seguin's four assists tied his career high. He had scored three of Dallas' six goals in the previous five games.

Marner, a 19-year-old rookie, scored for the first time since Oct. 15 and had his first two-goal game.

Marcus Foligno scored for the Sabres, and Robin Lehner made 27 saves. Buffalo had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Denis Malgin and Aaron Ekblad also scored for the Panthers, and James Reimer made 33 saves. Reimer started in place of Roberto Luongo, who has lost his last three starts.

Pavel Zacha, PA Parenteau and Travis Zajac scored for the Devils. Schneider stopped 25 shots.

Zacha tied the score 3-all with 3:55 left in the third period, his first NHL goal.

SENATORS 1, CANUCKS 0

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Mike Condon made 27 saves in his Ottawa debut, and Vancouver was shut out for the fourth time in five games.

Mike Hoffman scored for the Senators.

Jacob Markstrom made 23 saves for the Canucks, who have lost seven straight (0-6-1).

Ottawa made the most of a giveaway by Erik Gudbranson at the 14-minute mark of the second period as Markstrom tried to play the loose puck, but instead left a wide-open net for Hoffman.

Condon, acquired from Pittsburgh for a 2017 fifth-round draft pick, arrived in Ottawa on Wednesday after a long day of travel from Los Angeles.

KINGS 3, PENGUINS 2, OT

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nic Dowd scored 2:37 into overtime, and Los Angeles snapped a three-game skid with a victory over Pittsburgh.

Trevor Lewis and Matt Greene scored slump-busting goals and Peter Budaj made 21 saves in a strong bounce-back effort for the Kings, who had been shut out in three consecutive games before they beat the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Sidney Crosby scored two goals for Pittsburgh, giving him six in five games to start his season.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 shots for the Penguins, whose four-game winning streak ended.

The Kings started overtime with a power play, but Pittsburgh easily killed it. Dowd then got in alone on Fleury and roofed a backhand for his second NHL goal.

Los Angeles is 5-0-0 in extra-time games and 0-6-0 in regulation this season.

FLAMES 3, SHARKS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Matthew Tkachuk had his first two-goal game, including the game-winner with 4:21 to play, and Calgary handed San Jose its first home loss of the season.

Brent Burns and Melker Karlsson scored for the Sharks, who were the last NHL team to lose at home.

Chad Johnson stopped 26 of 28 shots in his fourth appearance for the Flames. Martin Jones had 19 saves for the Sharks.

COYOTES 3, PREDATORS 2, SO

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Anthony Duclair and Radim Vrbata scored in the shootout, and Louis Domingue stopped 35 shots plus two more in the tiebreaker to lead Arizona over Nashville.

Duclair and rookie Christian Dvorak scored in regulation for the Coyotes, who won for the third time in four games after a 1-5 start.

Matt Irwin and Craig Smith had the goals for Nashville. The Predators lost four of five games on a West Coast road trip that ended in Arizona, though they earned two overtime points.

Domingue saved shots by Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen in the shootout.

Duclair made it 2-all with his first goal of the season, at 5:48 of the third period.

Grand Salami - November
November 4, 2016

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.
