COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Sam Gagner scored twice, Nick Foligno got a goal and two assists and 13 Blue Jackets had at least a point, helping Columbus beat the St. Louis Blues 8-4 on Saturday night.

Eight days after whipping NHL-leading Montreal 10-1, Columbus had its fans chanting ''We want 10!'' with its team ahead 7-1 late in the second period.

Alexander Wennberg, Brandon Dubinsky, Markus Nutivaara, William Karlsson and Zach Werenski also scored for Columbus. The Blue Jackets rebounded from a tough loss Thursday night in Boston and have points in six of their last seven games (5-1-1), winning four straight at home. Cam Atkinson added a career-high four assists, and Brandon Saad, Scott Hartnell, Lukas Sedlak and Boone Jenner each had two.

Sergei Bobrovksy, pulled in the first period against the Bruins, stopped 33 shots for the Jackets.

Robby Fabbri scored twice and Vladimir Tarasenko and Kevin Shattenkirk also score for St. Louis.

Jake Allen stopped eight of 12 shots and was pulled early in the second period. Carter Hutton finished with 14 stops.

PENGUINS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust scored in the third period to help Pittsburgh pull away from Toronto.

Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz also scored and Matt Murray stopped 34 shots as Pittsburgh won for the seventh time in nine games.

Zach Hyman scored for the Maple Leafs and Frederik Anderson had 45 saves in his second start in two nights. Toronto has won just once in its last eight on the road.

Rust made it 3-1 at 6:58 of the third period when he took a feed from Crosby at the faceoff dot and put a shot on Andersen. He got his own rebound and darted to the net, sweeping a shot past Andersen's outstretched pad.

RANGERS 4, FLAMES 1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Michael Grabner and Derek Stepan scored in the first period, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 35 shots and New York beat Calgary.

Jimmy Vesey and Pavel Buchnevich also scored for New York, which has won six of seven.

Micheal Ferland spoiled Lundqvist's shutout bid with 8:48 remaining and Brian Elliott finished with 24 saves for Calgary, which has lost four straight and six of seven.

Grabner, who signed with the Rangers in the offseason, has a team-high eight goals in 15 games - just one fewer than his total in 80 games with Toronto last year. Buchnevich scored for the fourth straight game.

CANADIENS 5, RED WINGS 0

MONTREAL (AP) - Carey Price made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season and Montreal beat Detroit to extend its winning streak to four games.

Phillip Danault, Paul Byron, Shea Weber, Andrew Shaw and Max Pacioretty scored to help NHL-leading Montreal improve to 13-1-1. Shaw added two assists for his first multipoint game with the Canadiens.

Jimmy Howard gave up five goals on 25 shots for Detroit before being replaced by Petr Mrazek at the start of the third period. Mrazek made 12 saves in relief. The Red Wings dropped to 8-7-1.

Montreal has opened with 10 straight victories at Bell Centre, a franchise record for consecutive home victories to start a season. The previous record was established in 1953.

PANTHERS 3, ISLANDERS 2, OT

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Jonathan Marchessault tied the game with 13.6 seconds left in regulation and Denis Malgin scored late in overtime, helping Florida beat New York.

Florida trailed 2-0 in the third period before getting goals from Kyle Rau and Marchessault.

Marchessault tied it when Jaroslav Halak blocked a shot but let the puck trickle through his pads and in.

Malgin poked in a rebound with 45.8 seconds left in overtime.

Brock Nelson and Nick Leddy scored for New York and Halak had 40 saves.

Roberto Luongo made 17 saves to win his second straight start after losing the previous four. James Reimer entered with 50.4 seconds left in regulation and made one save, but Luongo re-entered after it was tied and played in overtime.

SHARKS 3, LIGHTNING 1

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Patrick Marleau had a goal that required two video reviews, Martin Jones made 25 saves and San Jose beat Tampa Bay.

Tommy Wingels and Marc-Edouard Vlasic also scored for the Sharks, who are 3-0 midway through a six-game road trip. San Jose is 11-3-1, including 6-1-1 on the road, against Tampa Bay since 2006.

Tampa Bay got a goal from Anton Stralman. Ben Bishop had 17 saves.

PREDATORS 5, DUCKS 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - James Neal scored twice and Pekka Rinne stopped 27 shots for his 41st career shutout in Nashville's win over Anaheim.

Ryan Ellis, Colton Sissons and Filip Forsberg also scored for the Predators, who won their third straight and improved to 4-0-2 in their last six. Rinne's shutout was his third this season.

Ducks goalie John Gibson gave up four goals on 18 shots before he was replaced late in the third period by Jonathan Bernier, who stopped eight of the nine shots he faced.

The first two games in the teams' season series have both been decided by five-goal margins, including Anaheim's 6-1 win on Oct. 26 at home.

FLYERS 3, WILD 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Brayden Schenn scored the tiebreaking goal at 8:43 of the third period, lifting Philadelphia over Minnesota.

Brandon Manning and Michael Del Zotto also scored to help the Flyers snap a three-game skid. Michael Neuvirth started and stopped six of seven shots before leaving after the first period due to an apparent injury. Steve Mason replaced him and finished with 19 saves, including a left pad save on Eric Staal in the closing seconds.

Nino Niederreiter and Mikael Granlund scored for the Wild, who lost for the third time in four games. Devan Dubnyk had 33 saves.

On the go-ahead score, Wayne Simmonds put a between-the-legs pass from behind the net onto Schenn's stick and Schenn waited for Dubnyk to go down before firing the puck over him for his third of the season - all on the power play.

BRUINS 2, COYOTES 1

Ryan Spooner also scored for the Bruins, who have won three of their last four overall and nine straight against Arizona.

Boston has not lost to the Coyotes since Oct. 9, 2010, during a season-opening series in Prague.

HURRICANES 5, CAPITALS 1

Aho added an assist, Teuvo Teravainen had a goal and three assists and Victor Rask also scored for Carolina. Cam Ward made 20 saves.

Washington was coming off an overtime win in Chicago on Friday night.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored with 7:58 left in the first period to put Washington ahead 1-0, but backup Philipp Grubauer stopped only 33 of 37 shots.

Sunday’s six-pack

Six most popular picks in Week 10 of the Westgate Super Contest:

6) San Diego Chargers (412) -4

5) Carolina Panthers (417) -3

4) Green Bay Packers (521) -2.5

3) Atlanta Falcons (538) even

2) New Orleans Saints (550) -2.5

1) Pittsburgh Steelers (671) -2.5

Season record: 18-35-2

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up the first part of the weekend

Wrapping up the first part of the sports weekend……..
13) Pitt 43, Clemson 42— Watson was 52-70/580 passing, but threw three INTs and Clemson didn’t score in 4th quarter. Panthers kicked 48-yard FG with 0:06 left to send everyone in Death Valley home unhappy.

12) UNLV 69, Wyoming 66 OT— Weird game. Rebels ran for 401 yards, totally dominated with their running game but still needed OT to beat lackluster Wyoming team that turned ball over four times. UNLV’s basketball team lost 76-68 Friday nite; the football team outscored them.

11) USC 26, Washington 13— Trojans are now 7-3 after a 1-3 start and Clay Helton has fought off the critics to lead his team to a decent season. Total upheaval in the top five this week, with Clemson, Washington, Michigan all losing Saturday. As for the Huskies, if your school color is purple, then wear purple jerseys (not black) for the biggest game of your season.

10) Miami Oh 35, Buffalo 24— Red Hawks started out this season 0-6, after being 5-19 the last two years, but have righted ship, won five games in a row and if they win their last game, they’ll be 6-6 and bowl eligible. Won’t be a great bowl, but when you were 0-6, any bowl will do. Three of their five wins came on the road; impressive turnaround.

9) Iowa 14, Michigan 13— Wolverines have now lost their last four visits to Iowa City, hadn’t won at Iowa since 2005. True freshman made a 33-yard FG at the gun to win it, in a game where neither side had 250 total yards. Kirk Ferentz had five state troopers around him after the game; I bet Iowa’s governor isn’t protected that well.

8) Albany 87, Penn State 81— Great Danes were supposed to open the season at Duke, but due to NY State not allowing anyone in state employ to do business in North Carolina because of the LGBT/bathroom issue, that game was cancelled and Albany scheduled Penn State instead, and they scored a solid road win.

7) Penn State 45, Indiana 31— Hoosiers (+7) led 31-28 with 5:00 left; Penn State scored a TD with 3:58 left, kicked a FG with 1:07 left that pushed the spread, but then, with 0:29 left, Penn State ran a fumble in from nine yards out for the covering TD, in a very brutal beat for Indiana backers.

6) South Florida 49, Memphis 42— After watching this game, I’m half-thinking that USF doesn’t have an actual offense; they just line up in spread, snap the ball and junior QB Flowers runs amok and makes something happen out of the chaos. Bulls have a lot of fast guys, but no wonder Florida State beat ‘em by three TD’s- they can match USF’s speed.

5) Georgia 13, Auburn 7— Hard to cover a 10.5-point spread if you score 7. Auburn gained a total of 164 yards on 54 plays- they had zero first downs in the second half. Some of these teams in the AAC, Big 12 get that in the first quarter of games. The SEC title game is going to be awful, probably a 20+ pointspread with Alabama ready to crush whoever shows up.

4) West Virginia 24, Texas 20— Mountaineers have four road games this year: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Texas and Iowa State— why are they in the Big X? It makes no sense for them not to play Va Tech, Pitt, Penn State, Maryland, Virginia- the teams close to them. Texas is 5-5 and people have to be wondering why they fired Mack Brown.

3) Louisville 44, Wake Forest 12— Deacons led this game 12-3 at the half, 12-10 after three quarters, so what we have here is a misleading final score.

2) Oklahoma 45, Baylor 24— Bears were 6-0 but have now lost three games in row, giving up 914 rushing yards and 142 points. Wonder if they’ll go to a bowl game. given the off-field issues the program has.

1) Ole Miss 29, Texas A&M 28— Freshman QB Shea Patterson, in his first college start, was 25-42/338 passing, as he rallied Rebels from down 21-6 for the unlikely win. You win on the road with a freshman making his first college start in November, that is solid coaching, especially since the kid drove the bus with his passing, he just didn’t hand off and manage the game.

CHICAGO (AP) Patrick Kane scored a spectacular tiebreaking goal in the second period and the Chicago Blackhawks beat Montreal 3-2 on Sunday night, handing the league-leading Canadiens just their second regulation loss of the season.

Marian Hossa added his team-leading ninth and rookie Gustav Forsling scored his first in the NHL as Chicago improved to 9-0-2 in its last 11 and ended Montreal's four-game winning streak.

Shea Weber and Andrei Markov scored for the Canadiens in a matchup of conference leaders.

Both goalies faced teams from their hometowns. Canadiens backup Al Montoya, a Chicago native, made 32 saves. Chicago's Corey Crawford, from Montreal, stopped 21 shots.

Kane put Chicago ahead 3-2 with 3:37 left in the second period to cap a terrific individual effort. Kane skated down the slot, fooled Jeff Petry with a move and chipped a shot past Montoya - while falling to the ice with Max Pacioretty checking him closely from behind.

CANUCKS 5, STARS 4, OT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Troy Stecher tied it with 1:40 left in the third period and Markus Granlund scored in overtime, helping Vancouver rally to beat Dallas.

Dallas held leads of 3-1 and 4-3, but Vancouver got goals from Louis Eriksson, Brandon Sutter, Bo Horvat and Stecher to force overtime. The Canucks were coming off a 1-5 road trip and have two wins in their last 12 games.

Ryan Miller made 17 saves for Vancouver.

Patrick Eaves scored twice and Lauri Korpikoski and Antoine Roussel also scored for the Stars, who wrapped up a five-game road trip 2-1-2.

Kari Lehtonen stopped 25 shots for Dallas, which had won 10 straight against the Canucks.

Granlund scored 1:27 into overtime by finding a loose puck off a faceoff and snapping it past Lehtonen.

JETS 3, KINGS 2, SO

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Mark Scheifele scored the deciding goal in a shootout to give Winnipeg a victory over Los Angeles.

Patrik Laine also beat Peter Budaj in the shootout, and Dwight King scored against the Jets' Connor Hellebuyck.

The Jets are 3-0-1 in their last four games and 8-7-2 overall. The Kings have lost three straight to drop to 7-8-1.

Kings forward Kyle Clifford was called for a boarding major in the first period for a hit that sent Jets forward Kyle Connor into the boards head-first. Adam Lowry and Marko Dano took advantage with power-play goals.

Connor left for the dressing room, but returned for the second period.

Tanner Pearson scored in the first period for Los Angeles, and defenseman Tom Gilbert tied it midway through the third.

WILD 2, SENATORS 1, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Matt Dumba scored late in overtime and Darcy Kuemper stopped 35 shots, helping Minnesota beat Ottawa.

Ryan Suter scored a short-handed goal for the Wild, and Kuemper was nearly perfect in his third start of the season.

Craig Anderson made 40 saves and was again solid for the Senators, who got a goal from Kyle Turris 5:06 into the third period.

The Wild were playing their third game in four nights to conclude a four-game trip, but they controlled much of the action with Ottawa looking disorganized for most of the night.

BRUINS 2, AVALANCHE 0

DENVER (AP) - Tuukka Rask stopped 21 shots and David Krejci scored in the first period, lifting Boston over Colorado.

Rask showed no signs of fatigue despite being in net for a second straight night. He made 31 saves in a 2-1 win over Arizona on Saturday. Rask got his 33rd career shutout and moved to 7-0 on the road this season.

Krejci scored his second goal of the season on a wrist shot midway through the first period.

The Avalanche pulled Semyon Varlamov with about a minute remaining but couldn't generate much offense. Dominic Moore sealed it with an empty-net goal with 27.2 seconds remaining.

Varlamov was the hard-luck loser, stopping a season-high 43 shots.

B]Armadillo: Monday's six-pack[/B]

Six most popular picks in Week 10 of the Westgate Super Contest:

6) San Diego Chargers (412) -4- L

5) Carolina Panthers (417) -3- L

4) Green Bay Packers (521) -2.5- L

3) Atlanta Falcons (538) even- L

2) New Orleans Saints (550) -2.5- L

1) Pittsburgh Steelers (671) -2.5- L

Seahawks 31, Patriots 24– How sweet was this for Pete Carroll? Lost to New England in the Super Bowl couple years ago, fired by the Patriots so they could hire Belichick. Small consolation but also a great game. Wilson looked little more mobile, which generates their offense.

Rough day for the favorites: 3-9 against the spread.

Season record: 18-41-2…….popular opinion is taking a beating!!!!

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday…….

Texans 24, Jaguars 21— Jax is one of three teams (Cards, Giants) not to score on their first drive of a game: their offense has been outscored 7-0 by opponents’ defense on first drive of their nine games. Texans are now 1-3 on road, after losing first three road games by combined score of 84-22. Jaguars have zero takeaways in their last five games (-12).

Chiefs 20, Panthers 17— In their last two games, both wins, KC has one offensive TD, eight FGs, six 3/outs. Carolina led this game 17-6 in 4th quarter, but Newton threw a pick-6, then Panthers fumbled it away again in last minute when game was tied.

Carolina started second half with a 20-play drive that took 10:08 off the clock, but they wound up punting on the drive- they didn’t score in the second half.

Denver 25, Saints 23— One of weirdest endings in NFL history; Saints tied game on a 32-yard TD with 1:22 left, but Broncos blocked PAT, ran it back for the game-winning two points. New Orleans averaged 9.8 yds/pass attempt but turned ball over 4 times (-2) which is most always fatal. Broncos converted 11 of 19 third down plays, had 9-yard edge in field position.

Rams 9, Jets 6— On Hard Knocks this summer, rookie WR Cooper was having issues catching punts, so coach Jeff Fisher stepped in and gave him some tips— Fisher ran punts back when he played. With this game tied 6-6 in 4th and Cooper returning punts for banged-up Austin (leg), Cooper made an excellent catch on a short punt that gave Rams good field position on their own 48. If he lets it bounce, Rams could’ve lost 15-20 yards of field position. From there, LA drove for the game-winning FG. Good coaching helps.

That said, on their last 32 drives, Rams have scored one touchdown, tried six FGs; how much worse could rookie QB Goff really be? LA has four wins; they didn’t score a TD in two of them. The defense could use some help.

Eagles 24, Falcons 15— Philly is 4-0 at home, allowing 38 points, giving up three offensive TDs on 42 drives. Atlanta had scored 106 points in its last three games; holding them to 15 is really impressive. Falcons were 2-11 on 3rd down in this game, ran ball only 13 times for 48 yards.

Redskins 26, Vikings 20— Atlanta started 5-0 last season and missed playoffs; is Minnesota headed in same direction? Vikings have lost four games in a row, their OC quit- they missed PAT after their third TD and then got shut out in second half. Vikings have only two takeaways in last three games. Over is 5-0 in Washington home games.

Titans 47, Packers 25— Tennessee tried onside kick to start game, which didn’t work; still, they are first team since 1986 (Giants) to lead Green Bay by 21 points in first quarter. On their first three drives, Tennessee’s offense ran 17 plays for 236 yards and three TDs- their TE’s ran amok, with over 100 receiving yards and two TDs in first half alone.

Bucs 36, Bears 10— This seems like a good time to point out that NFL’s TV ratings have gone down in every Presidential election year, not just this year, and by as much as 10% in 2000, so things should get back to normal from here on in, at least as far as TV ratings go.

This is an awful loss for the Bears, who didn’t get a first down in the second half- they ran 12 plays for -13 yards in the whole second half. No bueno.

CFL playoffs— Edmonton 24, Hamilton 21 and BC Lions 32, Winnipeg 31.

Dolphins 31, Chargers 24— On his last five drives, Philip Rivers threw four INTs and a TD pass; the 3rd INT was run back for the game-winning Miami TD by Kiko Alonso. San Diego held Ajayi to 79 rushing yards, Over is now 8-2 in Charger games this year; those of us who have NFL Sunday Ticket will miss them next week, their bye week. Miami has won four games in a row.

Cardinals 23, 49ers 20– Kaepernick played well in leading 49ers back to tie game with 1:55 left, but Palmer drove Arizona 69 yards for the winning FG at the gun. Penalty yardage in this game: SF 100, Arizona 10. Cardinals turned ball over four times (-3) but won, which rarely happens.

Cowboys 35, Steelers 30— Pittsburgh went for two points four times and went 0-4. What is the reason for doing it after your first two TDs of the game? Dallas has won eight in row for first time since 1977; there were seven lead changes in this game. Pittsburgh/Green Bay both have Hall of Fame QBs and are both 4-5; go figure.

Vasilevskiy stops 34 shots, Lightning beat Islanders 4-0
November 14, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Andrei Vasilevskiy faced 20 shots in the third period Monday night, so there wasn't much time for him to worry about the status of his shutout.

The Tampa Bay Lightning goalie was more worried about a victory, anyway.

Vasilevskiy made 34 saves for his third career shutout, J.T. Brown and Ryan Callahan scored 42 seconds apart in the first period and the Lightning beat the New York Islanders 4-0 on Monday night.

''We get two points, that's most important,'' Vasilevskiy said, ''and the shutout is a little bounce.''

The goalie said he expected the Islanders to press in the third after being outshot 17-4 in the second.

''Usually when a team plays not that good (in the second period), they make a push in the third,'' Vasilevskiy said. ''We did a good job on the (penalty kill) and the game overall, blocked shots and good play. I just want to say thank you to our guys for the shutout.''

Nikita Kucherov and Vladislav Namestnikov scored as the Lightning won for the fourth time in seven games (4-2-1) following a three-game skid.

Steven Stamkos had two assists to help Tampa Bay complete a sweep of the three-game season series with the Islanders - all within the last 14 days - by a combined 14-2 margin.

''We sat back probably a little too much in the third and put Vasy in a tough position to make some big saves,'' Stamkos said. ''He earned the shutout for sure.''

Jaroslav Halak had 27 saves for New York, which was shut out for the first time this season and fell to 1-3-3 in its last seven.

''Obviously we don't want to be in the spot we are in,'' Islanders captain John Tavares said. ''We just have to play positive and get better. You get up tomorrow and try to get better.''

Travis Hamonic returned to the Islanders just nine days after suffering a hand injury that was expected to keep him out four to six weeks. However, New York was without fellow defenseman Dennis Seidenberg after he was placed on injured reserve with a broken jaw after getting hit in the face by a puck in Saturday night's overtime loss at Florida. Scott Mayfield was an emergency recall from Bridgeport of the AHL, and the Islanders used seven defensemen and 11 forwards.

Mayfield fought with Brown about 5 1/2 minutes into the second after Brown hit Tavares. Mayfield received 17 minutes of penalties, getting whistled for instigating and a misconduct in addition to the fighting major.

Kucherov extended Tampa Bay's lead to 3-0 with 5:36 left in the second by completing a give-and-go with Stamkos, snapping the puck past Halak for his sixth of the season. It was Kucherov's fourth goal against the Islanders, including one in each of the team's three meetings.

The Lightning made it 4-0 about 2 1/2 minutes later when Stamkos brought the puck up ice and sent a pass to the right to Namestnikov, who tipped it in for his third.

Brown got the Lightning on the scoreboard with 1:02 left in the opening period, taking a pass from Craig Paquette and flicking the puck past Halak.

Tampa Bay made it 2-0 with 20 seconds remaining when Andrej Sustr fired a shot from the right point that Callahan appeared to deflect with the shaft of his stick over Halak's glove. It was Callahan's first goal of the season and his 349th career point.

Kucherov nearly added to the lead in the closing seconds of the first, but the puck ricocheted of the crossbar.

NOTES: Stamkos had seven points (two goals, five assists) in the three meetings against the Islanders this season, and Kucherov had six points (four goals, two assists). ... Stamkos also has a point in six of the last eight games with three goals and seven assists. ... Tampa Bay improved to 9-0-1 this season when scoring at least three goals. ... The Islanders have lost seven straight against the Lightning, including the last four of Tampa Bay's five-game series win in the second round of the playoffs last spring. ... New York's Nikolay Kulemin played his 598th game.

UP NEXT:

Lightning: At Detroit on Tuesday night in the second game of a five-game trip.

Islanders: Host defending champion Pittsburgh on Friday night to complete their two-game homestand before heading out on a three-game California trip.

Tuesday’s six-pack

— Rob Gronkowski may have punctured a lung during Sunday night’s game with Seattle.

— Former UNC/Miami coach Butch Davis will be the next football coach at FIU.

— Bears WR Alshon Jeffrey gets a 4-game suspension for PED’s.

— Michigan QB Wilton Speight may be out for the year with a broken collarbone.

— Fresno State hired former Cal/CFL coach Jeff Tedford as its new coach; he was Aaron Rodgers’ college coach.

— Rams’ DE Robert Quinn checked himself into a hospital with a non-football illness; apparently the situation looks promising. Obviously, we pray that this situation is resolved quickly so Robert can have a long and healthy life.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) OK, so I go get Chinese take-out for lunch the other day; get the same exact thing every time (chicken fried rice, Dr Pepper) and the same woman takes my order every time. While I wait for the food, she goes outside to her car and gets something out of it.

The woman owns a brand-new, fully loaded white Mercedes SUV, a beautiful car; she works the counter at a take-out place in a strip mall, and she drives a bleepin’ Mercedes. What a country.

12) There have been three NFL QB’s this year who threw 4+ INTs in the 4th quarter of a game:

— Carson Palmer against Buffalo
— Ryan Fitzpatrick against the Chiefs
— Philip Rivers vs Miami two days ago

From 2012-2015, this didn’t happen. Not once.

11) Credit to Pete Carroll for going for two points after Seahawks went up 24-17 with about 4:00 left in Sunday night’s game; if they make it (they didn’t), Seattle is up nine points and game is almost in the bag. If they don’t make it, he still has a 7-point lead to protect.

Only other coach I’ve seen do this is the guy who coaches the Minnesota Gophers in college; he didn’t make it either, but his team also protected the lead and won the game.

10) I looked at my TV around 2:00 Sunday and the screen says: Tennessee 35, Green Bay 10 in the second quarter and I’m like, that makes no sense. Packers’ pass defense was terrible. Not like Marcus Mariota is Dan Fouts or anything.

9) I quoted this stat at the beginning of the NFL season and I’m doing it again:

The Jets’ last five coaches, in the first year with the Jets: 48-32, all either 9-7 or 10-6.

The Jets’ last five coaches, after the first year: 82-104.

I have no explanation for this.

8) Yale (+13) 98, Washington 90— Yale’s best player is out for the year, but they won this game anyway. On the road- they took 34 foul shots in a road game.

College basketball in November is wild, crazy- last year Western Illinois won at Wisconsin- the Leathernecks wound up 10-17, Badgers won two games in the NCAAs.

7) A’s traded 3B Danny Valencia to Seattle over the weekend for a minor leaguer; Valencia hit 17 HRs with a .346 OB% LY but he is 32, arbitration-eligible. so the A’s told him to take a hike, which is bad news for A’s fans (like me) but good news for Ryan Healy’s fantasy owners (like me). Young Healy stood up well in his first major league action last summer.

6) Teams ranked #2, #3 and #4 in college football all lost Saturday, first time that happened on the same day since 1985.

5) There no ugly wins. Ever. None. Bupkus.

4) In their last three games, Carolina Panthers have been outscored 40-12 in the second half.

3) President of the United States makes $400,000 a year; the minimum salary in the major leagues is $507,500.

2) I’ve said this before in this space, going back a couple years, so this is in no way a reaction to last week’s elections, but I’m adamant about this: “The person who gets the most votes should win the election.” The Electoral College should be done away with.

All men were created equal, remember that? One person, one vote and all that…….

1) Speaking of which, Oceanside, CA voters re-elected City Treasurer Gary Ernst to his post last week, but there is one small problem.

Mr Ernst passed away in September; he won the election by 6% anyway.
