Sunday’s six-pack

Here are the six most popular picks in Week 8 of the Westgate Super Contest in Las Vegas:

1– Patriots (742) -6.5- W

2– Chargers (631) +5.5- L

3– Raiders (627) +1.5- W

4– Falcons (463) -3- L

5– Saints (460) +2.5- W

6– Eagles (434) +4.5

Season record: 17-29-1

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Raiders 30, Buccaneers 24 OT— Oakland is 5-0 on road for first time since 1977; all five of their wins are east of Mississippi- they outgained Tampa Bay 626-270 in a game that went OT, but Raiders set an NFL record with 23 penalties for 200 yards. Jameis Winston has regressed; he was not an accurate passer in this game.

Redskins 27, Bengals 27 OT— Second tie in two weeks; Washington was awful in red zone (4 trips, 10 points), missed a 34-yard walk-off FG in OT. Cousins threw for 458 yards, but Redskins had 106 penalty yards in game where teams combined to convert 16 of 32 on third down. Cincy had 35 first downs, Washington 30.

Titans 36, Jaguars 22— I’m not sure how Jax coach Bradley still has a job after this debacle on Thursday, but he does. Jaguars fired the OC instead. When the sideline reporter asks you at halftime, “Do you think your team has quit on you?” it is a pretty good indication you should lose your job, but Bradley is still employed. What a country.

Texans 20, Lions 13— Sometimes life is simple; Houston is 5-0 at home, 0-3 on the road. Texans had a 17-yard edge in field position in this game- teams like that very seldom lose. In a domed stadium, neither team gained 300 yards, which is odd. All eight tDetroit games have been decided by 7 or less points.

Saints 25, Seahawks 20— Seattle’s offense is banged-up; when you score only one offensive TD against the Saints, thats a huge red flag. New Orleans won three of last four games, is 5-1 vs spread in last six. Russell Wilson ran ball three times for 11 yards; until those numbers get better, Seattle is off-limits for me. Wilson’s mobility makes him great.

Patriots 41, Bills 25— Brady’s four games this year: W33-13, W35-17, W27-16, W41-25. Yards per pass in those games: 9.6, 9.4, 8.5, 7.5.

There were 129 offensive plays in this game and 22 accepted penalties for 200 yards, In the TCU-Texas Tech game Saturday, there were 175 offensive plays, with 5 accepted penalties for 35 yards. NFL is terribly over-officiated; no one pays to watch men in striped shirts throw flags.

Jets 31, Browns 28— Cleveland led 20-7 at the half, but they’ve now been outscored 131-51 in second half of games. Browns hired a “genius” from Harvard to run their front office, same guy who was Billy Beane’s right-hand guy for a while with the Oakland A’s (Jonah Hill’s character in Moneyball). Browns are 0-8; wonder what Hue Jackson thinks of his boss, the genius, the guy who gets him players?

Chiefs 30, Colts 14— Nick Foles came on in relief of a banged-up Alex Smith, was 16-22/223 in his first significant action as a Chief. As a Ram fan, I’m happy for Foles, who got a raw deal from the Rams- when protected, he is pretty good. KC was +2 in turnovers in this game; since Week 2, NFL teams that are +2 or better in turnovers are 36-3.

Panthers 30, Cardinals 20— Eight sacks for Carolina in this game; have to be worried for the Arizona offense- they outgained Seattle 443-257 last week, but tied 6-6. Cardinals ran ball only 10 times for 24 yards- no balance. This game was 24-7 at the half. NFC West teams are 5-11 vs spread in non-divisional games this season.

Falcons 33, Packers 32— Dan Quinn has coached 24 games for Atlanta; underdogs are 20-3 vs spread in those games (one game at Tampa LY was pick ‘em). Over is 7-1 in Falcon games this year, because a) their defense sucks and b) they’ve got a good passing game and they play home games in a dome. For three of four Packers who caught a TD pass in this game, it was their first career TD catch.

Broncos 27, Chargers 19— This has been a weird week; in first 10 games of the week other than this one, there were a total of 15 turnovers in 10 games- not many. In this game, both teams turned ball over three times, with each team scoring on a pick-6. Denver DC Wade Phillips (age 69) was taken to hospital after a sideline collision in second quarter- looked like his head hit the ground after the collision. Obviously, we hope he is feeling better.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the more interesting football games this weekend:

— Colorado (-12) over UCLA Thursday. Buffs have come a long way to be a double digit favorite in a league game.

— Eagles scored five TDs during recent 1-3 stretch; interesting game with the Giants, who are coming off a bye.

— Pitt-Miami— Hurricanes are on a 4-game losing streak.

— Steelers-Ravens— Will Big Ben play for Pittsburgh?

— Alabama-LSU— Tide won last four series games by average score of 29-16.

—First place in AFC West is at stake in Denver-Oakland game Sunday night in the Coliseum.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Cam Newton was whining about late hits again Sunday, after Carolina beat the Cardinals. Guess he did it then so people could not call him a sore loser, since they had won.

Best part of this is that Carolina goes to LA this week to play the Rams, usually thought of as a dirty team. Refs might start throwing flags during warmups, just to get loosened up. Great.

12) Coco Crisp was going to get $13M from the A’s in 2017 if he played in 140 games this year, something like that. Since his skills are in decline, they were making sure he wasn’t going to reach 140 games, and he voiced his displeasure with that.

Note: It would’ve been incredibly stupid to pay him $13M next year. Fair or unfair, it was good business.

So to quiet the storm and I guess reward a player who had helped the A’s over the last few years, Oakland dealt him to the Indians on August 31 for an obscure lefty reliever named Colt Hynes. Weird circumstances can help a team win a championship.

11) Phoenix Suns have a young player named Alan Williams who was a good very player at Cal-Santa Barbara. If any of the Suns have trouble with the law, they can call Alan up— his mom just got named police chief for the city of Phoenix.

10) Jacksonville Jaguars just fired their OC in large part because the QB had regressed. Who did they replace the OC with? the QB coach, who is in charge of making sure the QB didn’t regress. Oy.

9) Now that the Cleveland Cavaliers are champs, ever wonder what their former coach David Blatt is doing? Guy got fired last year; you have to wonder what he is doing now. Is he coaching somewhere? Did he go back overseas?

Would be interesting if Blatt went on TV, to hear what he had to say. Former coaches are usually better than former players on TV.

8) Who was the first DH in MLB history? Ron Blomberg walked with the bases loaded against Luis Tiant in Fenway Park, in April of 1973, in the first big league AB by a designated hitter.

7) Russell Westbrook is the first NBA player since at least 1983 with 40+ field goal attempts, 20+ free throws and 10+ assists in the same game. He is also the first guy since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975 to get a triple double with 50+ points.

6) Former Bills’ coach Mark Levy is 91; he looks great. Coach Levy was at Wrigley Field Friday night and was also there for the 1945 World Series, the last time the Cubs played in the Series, before this year.

5) Texas Longhorns haven’t had an offensive player taken in the first round of the NFL Draft since QB Vince Young, in 2006.

4) CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders closed out Taylor Field this week; lot of history there. Toronto Blue Jays actually played exhibition games in Regina in 1989 and 1993.

3) If you’ve never experienced Halloween in Las Vegas, I highly recommend it; few years ago, think it was 2012, i spent a weekend at the South Point Casino, which is a really good place, has a bowling alley, movie theater and 24-hour coffee shop as well as an excellent sports book. South Point also has an equestrian arena, so when the pro rodeo is in town, the cowboys stay there.

I had no idea there was such a thing as pro rodeo, so the first night I am there, I walk down into the casino and 95% of the people there are dressed like the cast of Blazing Saddles.

I ask the security guard if it is cowboy Halloween party and he says “No, the pro rodeo is in town.” I tell him I never heard of the pro rodeo. He looks at me and says “Where are you from?”

OK, so we don’t have rodeo in New York…….

2) So couple nights later, the rodeo is out of town and it is Saturday night and I notice a red carpet with TV cameras near the entrance. Ask the same security guard whats up.

“Oh, the fetish and fantasy ball is tonight.” he says. I give him a knowing look, not wanting to be a fool again, since I know we have fetish and fantasy here in New York but I had no idea what I was about to see.

An astounding parade of people in all kinds of costumes that were, um……revealing to say the least. I’m leaning up against a slot machine watching this in total amazement.

1) So I watch the parade for a little while then go watch the late college football games; after that I’m going up to my room for something and I get on the elevator with this couple from the fetish and fantasy ball.

He is dressed as a prison guard, handcuffs, night stick and all; she is in shackles and a neck collar, with an outfit that is torn in very strategic places. She had to be a model or a porn star, totally gorgeous and it is just the three of us on the elevator. I have zero idea what to do or say.

So I say nothing until we get to my floor and I wish them a Happy Halloween as I get off the elevator. I’m guessing they did.

NEW YORK (AP) Henrik Lundqvist made a season-high 35 saves for his 60th career shutout to lead the New York Rangers to a 5-0 win over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night.

Jimmy Vesey had a goal and two assists, and Dan Girardi, Rick Nash, Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes also scored for New York, which has won seven of its first 10 games.

Jake Allen started in goal for St. Louis and allowed four goals on 19 shots until he was replaced by Carter Hutton after Zuccarello made it 4-0 with 7:05 remaining in the second. Hutton stopped eight of the nine shots he faced.

Giradi opened the scoring 9:37 in with a 4-on-4 goal at 9;37 as his shot ricocheted off the skate of the Blues' Valdimir Tarasenko and bounced off the ice and past Allen's glove side. Vesey doubled the lead 1:34 later on the power play with his sixth of the season.

MAPLE LEAFS 3, OILERS 2, OT

TORONTO (AP) - Nazem Kadri got his second goal of the game in overtime, lifting Toronto over Edmonton.

Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews were scoreless in the anticipated first matchup of the last two No. 1 overall picks. McDavid, from nearby Richmond Hill, Ontario, played his first NHL game in Toronto.

Frederik Andersen had 44 saves for Toronto and Ben Smith also scored. The Leafs have won three of four games at home this season.

Edmonton has dropped two in a row for the first time this season. Anton Lander and Darnell Nurse scored and Cam Talbot stopped 28 shots.

McDavid's line was burned for the first goal of the game 89 seconds into the first period, with Kadri striking for an early lead.

BLUE JACKETS 3, STARS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Sam Gagner tied it with 16 seconds left in the third period and Seth Jones scored 46 seconds into overtime, lifting Columbus past Dallas Stars.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 36 shots for Columbus, and Nick Foligno also scored.

Tyler Seguin scored his team-leading fifth goal for Dallas early in the third for a 2-1 lead. Columbus pulled Bobrovsky for an extra skater on a power play in the final minute, leading to Gagner's slap shot from atop the left circle that beat goalie Antti Niemi.

Jones then won it with a wrist shot through traffic from above the circles.

Jason Spezza also scored for the Stars, and Niemi made 25 saves.

SABRES 2, WILD 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Johan Larsson had a third-period goal in his return to Minnesota and Robin Lehner made 27 saves to lift Buffalo.

Ryan O'Reilly added his fourth goal for Buffalo, which has won three straight.

Larsson, a 2010 second-round pick by Minnesota, played one game for the Wild in 2012-13 before being traded for Jason Pominville.

The Swedish forward batted a bouncing puck past goaltender Devan Dubnyk with just over six minutes left. Brian Gionta centered a puck that went off the stick of Minnesota forward Mikael Granlund and Larsson swatted it out of the air with the shaft of his stick.

Dubnyk stopped 22 shots but had his individual scoreless streak end at 183:16.

BRUINS 2, PANTHERS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Brad Marchand and Dominic Moore scored to lead Boston past Florida.

Tuukka Rask stopped 33 shots to help the Bruins win their second straight after a three-game skid.

Denis Malgin scored for the Panthers and Roberto Luongo had 24 saves in Florida's fourth loss in five games.

Trailing 2-0, the Panthers got on the scoreboard on Malgin's first NHL goal with 4:35 left in the third when his shot from the slot beat Rask. It snapped the Bruins goalie's shutout streak of 131:11.

The Panthers pulled their goalie with 3:20 left during a power play to give them a 6-on-4 advantage but couldn't score.

LIGHTNING 6, ISLANDERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Nikita Kucherov had two goals and two assists, Ben Bishop made 26 saves, and Tampa Bay cruised past the New York Islanders.

Steven Stamkos, Brian Boyle, J.T. Brown, and Valtteri Filppula also scored, and Victor Hedman and Slater Koekkoek each had two assists to help the Lightning snap a three-game skid and finish a 3-3-0 road trip.

Dennis Seidenberg scored for the Islanders, giving them goals by defensemen in six straight games. Thomas Greiss started in goal and gave up three goals on 11 shots in the first 13:34. He was replaced by Jaroslav Halak, who finished with 22 saves on 25 shots the rest of the way.

It was the teams' first meeting since the Lightning beat the Islanders in five games in the Eastern Conference semifinals last spring.

BLACKHAWKS 5, FLAMES 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists, and the Chicago won its third straight.

Kane scored his third of the season on a dazzling play in the first, and then set up Artem Anismov's tiebreaking power-play goal at 7:44 of the third. Anisimov extended his career-best point streak to eight games with his team-best seventh goal of the season.

With Sam Bennett in the penalty box for tripping, Kane made a perfect pass to Anisimov in front for the redirect. Tyler Motte added his third of the season on a nice rush, making it 3-1 at 12:44, and Kane assisted on Artemi Panarin's sliding empty-netter with 3:01 left.

Corey Crawford finished with 33 saves after posting his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

CAPITALS 3, JETS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Jay Beagle scored with 30 seconds left in the third period and Braden Holtby made 43 saves as Washington won its third straight.

Marcus Johansson had a goal and an assist and Karl Alzner also scored for the Capitals, who have won six of nine this season (6-2-1). Evgeny Kuznetsov had two assists in the finale of the Capitals' four-game trip to Canada.

Mark Scheifele and Adam Lowry scored for the Jets, and Connor Hellebuyck finished with 24 saves.

With the Capitals leading 2-0, Scheifele got the Jets on the scoreboard with his fifth of the season with just under 7 minutes remaining. Lowry tied it with about 2 1/2 minutes to go with his first of the season.

SENATORS 2, HURRICANES 1, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Kyle Turris scored in overtime, lifting the Ottawa Senators past Carolina.

Dion Phaneuf also scored for the Senators, who were playing their first of ten home games this month. Craig Anderson made 32 saves.

Jaccob Slavin scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes, and Cam Ward stopped 30 shots.

Ottawa was coming off a nine-day, three-game trip that culminated with an emotional 2-0 win in Edmonton on Sunday night after learning Anderson's wife, Nicholle, had been diagnosed with cancer.

PREDATORS 5, AVALANCHE 1

DENVER (AP) - Craig Smith scored twice, Pekka Rinne stopped 28 shots and struggling Nashville beat Colorado.

Ryan Johansen and Matt Irwin each scored his first goal of the season, while Roman Josi added an insurance goal late for the Predators, who won their first road game of the season.

Staked to a two-goal lead heading into the third period, Rinne easily made it hold up as he improved to 16-7-2 in his career against the Avalanche.

Jarome Iginla scored NHL goal No. 613. He's 12 behind Colorado Hall-of-Famer-turned-GM Joe Sakic for 15th place on the all-time scoring list.

Wednesday’s six-pack

— Cubs 9, Indians 3– Game 7 is tonight in Cleveland.

— November 21 Texans-Raiders Monday night game is being played in Mexico City.

— Raiders don’t play another true road game until December 8 in KC; they finish with three road games in last four weeks, all division games.

— Patriots got a 3rd-round draft pick from Cleveland for LB Jaime Collins.

— Chicago Bulls are 3-0 for the first time in 20 years.

— Oklahoma City Thunder gave Victor Oladipo $84M for four years.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) Steelers-Ravens play in Baltimore Sunday, with both teams off a bye week; wouldn’t it have made sense for this to be the Thursday night game this week? Football wasn’t meant to be played on three days’ rest.

12) Chicago Bears are the only NFL team that does not have a defensive player who has ever played in a Pro Bowl.

11) Bears’ offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains went to college at Arkansas, where he held for kicks for four years and learned football from coach Houston Nutt.

Loggains could’ve gone to a smaller school and played QB, but he thought he wanted to be a coach and chose to learn from Nutt, who was a very good coach before going on TV.

10) ESPN fantasy sports guru Matthew Berry was once a writer for the TV show Married with Children.

9) Dolphins are favored over the Jets this week; this is only 2nd time in last 12 years that Miami is favored in its post-bye game. Overall, Dolphins are 6-12 in their last 18 post-bye games.

8) There is a TV show on the History Channel called American Pickers, where two guys drive around in a van and try to buy collectible stuff from older people who live in mostly rural areas.

Why older people? Because they want to find people who are just looking to get rid of stuff, preferably for less money. Sometimes you get mad at the two guys, especially Frank, who thinks he is smarter than everyone else, but that is part of the business of making money, I guess.

The guys own two shops where they re-sell the stuff for a profit. It is oddly entertaining and worth watching.

7) In three of last five seasons, Dwight Howard has made less than half his foul shots; he is off to an 11-24 start this year, after his 8-20 game against the Kings Monday.

Howard makes $23M a year, has already banked $167M in salary in his career. How can I be a better free throw shooter than he is?

6) Clippers TV announcer Ralph Lawler is joy to listen to; always watch as many Clipper games as I can. Clippers were so bad for so long and now they’re good, so you’re happy for him. Lawler is enthusiastic and you can tell he is a real basketball fan.

5) Oklahoma City traded Ersan Ilyasova to Philly Tuesday, after he played only 62 minutes in three games for the Thunder- they acquired him as part of the Serge Ibaka deal.

This means when he plays for the Sixers, it’ll be the 5th team Ilyasova has played for in his last 79 games, going from the Bucks to Detroit to Orlando to the Thunder to Philadelphia.

On one hand, teams want you enough to trade for you; on the other hand, once they have you, then don’t mind getting rid of you.

4) Good news for NC State’s basketball team; freshman 7-footer Omer Yurtseven will be able to play for the Wolfpack this year— he becomes eligible December 15, enough time to get in a few games before ACC play starts.

Yurtseven is a 5-star level recruit, a huge get for Mark Gottfried.

3) There is a story going around that Nick Saban was interested in the Giants’ coaching job last January, and that the team almost hired him. Somehow, comedian Tom Arnold is involved with spreading this story, which makes it a little weirder.

You get the feeling Saban has one more coaching stop in him and it will be an NFL job— he has nothing left to prove in college.

2) Mets closer Jeurys Familia got arrested in New Jersey on domestic violence charges, which is bad news for Mets, seeing as Jose Reyes got suspended 52 games LY for a similar offense.

Aroldis Chapman got a 30-game suspension this year and he was never arrested for his offense.

1— Obscure Fact of the Day: Eddie Johnson played 17 years in the NBA, scored 19,202 points; he holds the record for most points scored in the NBA, without ever making an All-Star team.

Jamal Crawford has a good chance to break that record; he has scored 17,117 points; he is 36, looks like he would have to play two more years at his current pace to set the new record.
