NBA Betting Road Map: Unprecedented run for white-hot Heat

No team as bad as the Heat were, has ever won 10 in a row, not to mention 10 straight ATS wins, too.

For much of the season, most NBA pundits believed we would eventually see a rematch between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. However, the Washington Wizards have played like they want to break into the conversation. Scotty Brooks' squad is now 14-2 since Jan. 4, which compares favorably to Cleveland's 8-7 record. So, the Wizards must be considered a dark horse to represent the Eastern Conference. Let's take a look at other goings-on around the NBA.

Spread Watch

The Miami Heat blew out the 76ers,125-102, on Saturday for their 10th straight win (both SU and ATS). The craziest thing about this hot streak is that it would have been impossible to see it coming. Indeed, the Heat were 11-30 (.268) prior to ripping off their 10 wins. The last time anything even remotely close to this happened, where a bad team went on an extended win streak, was two seasons ago, when the 5-23 (.178) Pistons went on a 7-0 SU/ATS streak. Then in 2005, the 22-46 (.323) Warriors won eight in a row (6-2 ATS). But no team this bad has ever won 10 in a row, not to mention 10 straight ATS wins, too.

Additionally, Miami didn't compile this streak only against cupcakes. They beat, arguably, the best team in NBA history, Golden State and also knocked off Houston and Atlanta. This week, the Heat will hit the road for games at Minnesota, Milwaukee, Brooklyn and Philadelphia. Expect the streak to be snapped on Monday by the Timberwolves, as NBA teams off back-to-back wins are a poor 37-62 ATS their last 99, if they scored 117-plus points in their previous game and they're matched up against a foe off a loss.

Totals Watch

The San Antonio Spurs have gone Over the total in 14 of their last 20 games, notwithstanding the fact that the Spurs have given up the second least amount of points (behind Utah) and have the 2nd most efficient defense (after Golden State). Moreover, since Paul Gasol got injured, the Spurs have played at a faster pace. Before Gasol's injury, the Spurs were 25th in the league in pace and averaged 96.93 possessions per 48 minutes. But after his injury, that number is up to 101.37 possessions per 48 minutes and the Spurs are 6th in pace in this stretch. Gasol likely won't return until after the All-Star Break, so the Spurs' next six games at least, should be played at this faster pace.

This week, the Spurs will embark on the first leg of their eight-game Rodeo Road Trip. On Monday, San Antonio will be in Memphis, followed by games against the 76ers (Wednesday), Pistons (Friday) and Knicks (Sunday). The Grizzlies (6-0 Over run), 76ers (8-1 Over run), Pistons (14-4 Over run) and Knicks (4-1 Over run) have all been involved in relatively high-scoring games of late, so I look for the Spurs' stretch of Over to continue.

Injury Watch

Toronto's DeMar DeRozan continues to be sidelined by his ankle injury. The All-Star injured himself on Jan. 22, against the Phoenix Suns. He initially missed three games and returned Jan. 29 to play 36 minutes vs. the Magic. But, he's been out for their last four games.

Not surprisingly, the Raptors have struggled without DeRozan on the floor. Dating back to the Jan. 22 game, the Raptors are 3-6 SU and 4-5 ATS. Toronto is also currently without forward Patrick Patterson, as well. Overall, the Raptors are 8-9 in the 17 games that either or both players have missed since Jan. 1.

This week, the Raptors will alternate home and road games against the Clippers (Monday), Timberwolves (Wednesday) and Pistons (Sunday). If DeRozan and Patterson are both out on Monday against Los Angeles, then the Clippers would be worth a look.

Schedule Watch

Since the Spurs moved into their current home, the AT&T Center, 14 years ago, they have taken an extended road trip at this time of year while the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo took over the premises. The Spurs have used these Rodeo Road Trips over the years to bond as a team, as well as to generate momentum for the playoff push to come. Which has gone exceptionally well. They've gone 82-35 SU and 61-52-2 ATS on these road trips. They've had just one losing trip, and that was in 2015, when they went 4-5.

Last season, the Spurs bounced back to go 7-1 on their eight-game road trip, and they'll have another eight-game trip this season. First up will be a Memphis Grizzly squad looking to avenge last year's playoff series defeat (a 4-0 sweep). Overall, the Spurs have won nine straight vs. Memphis, but .545 (or better) teams, playing a division foe with revenge from a playoff series loss, have gone 24-48-1 ATS since 1991. Look for Memphis to cover as a home underdog.

Game of the Night – Spurs at Grizzlies – 9:35 PM EST – TNT

Amazingly, San Antonio and Memphis have yet to face off this season as the two Southwest division rivals will meet four times in the next two months. The Spurs embark on their annual “Rodeo Trip” as San Antonio hits the road for the next eight games, starting at FedEx Forum on Monday night.

The last time these teams met up came in the opening round of the 2016 playoffs with the Spurs sweeping the undermanned Grizzlies in four games. Three of the four victories were decided by double-digits, as Gregg Popovich’s squad compiled a perfect 8-0 mark against Memphis last season, while covering six times. In seven of the eight matchups, the Grizzlies were limited to 95 points or fewer, while Memphis’ last victory over San Antonio came in December 2014.

The Spurs (39-11 SU, 29-20-1 ATS) have won 20 of 25 games away from AT&T Center, owning the second best road record in the NBA behind Golden State (21-5). San Antonio finished off a four-game homestand with three consecutive victories after getting upset by Dallas last Sunday. The Spurs routed the Nuggets on Saturday, 121-97 as 13-point favorites, while four San Antonio players scored at least 18 points, led by Kawhi Leonard’s 19 points.

Memphis (31-22 SU, 27-26 ATS) returns home from a 4-2 road swing, capped off by Saturday’s 107-99 victory at Minnesota as 4 ½-point underdogs. All six games finished OVER the total, while the Grizzlies held four of their opponents to 99 points or less. In spite of this recent OVER run, each of the past three contests played at FedEx Forum have gone UNDER the total, as Memphis has limited eight of the last nine foes to under 100 points in its last nine home victories.

The Grizzlies have posted a 7-5 ATS record in the role of a home underdog, but Memphis has dropped nine of its past 10 home meetings with San Antonio since May 2013.

Elite Eighteen?

The Wizards have put together an unbelievable 17-game winning streak at the Verizon Center dating back to early December. Washington looks to keep that hot home streak going against Cleveland, as the Cavaliers shoot for their third consecutive victory. Scott Brooks’ squad has compiled a fantastic 15-2 ATS mark during this stretch with both ATS losses coming as a double-digit favorite.

Cleveland captured the first matchup this season in D.C. by a 105-94 count in mid-November as 7 ½-point favorites. The Cavaliers have slumped to a 2-5 SU/ATS mark in the last seven games away from Quicken Loans Arena, while owning a 5-12 ATS record in 2017.

Music Men

The Jazz start a three-game road swing in Atlanta as Utah is fresh off a 3-1 homestand. Quin Snyder’s team has struggled against the number of late by posting a 2-8 ATS ledger in the last 10 games, while failing to cash in their previous seven contests away from Salt Lake City. Utah has not been a team to back in the road underdog role this season at 1-10 SU/ATS, including eight consecutive losses in this role.

The Hawks look to avenge a 95-68 rout at Utah in late November, as Atlanta was held to 31% shooting from the floor. Atlanta’s four-game home winning streak against Utah came to a halt last season as the Jazz edged the Hawks, 97-96 as three-point underdogs. Since Christmas, the Hawks have put together a solid 8-3 SU and 6-5 ATS record at Philips Arena, but own a 2-5 ATS mark this season as a home favorite against Western Conference opponents.

Super Bowl Hangover?

The Clippers and Raptors are two of three teams that played on Super Bowl Sunday that are back in action on Monday (Thunder the other). Los Angeles picked up a late cover as six-point underdogs in Sunday’s 107-102 setback at Boston in the first of a five-game road trip. The Clippers head north of the border trying to pull off the season sweep of the Raptors after beating Toronto at Staples Center, 123-115 in late November.

The Raptors held off the Nets on Sunday, 103-95, led by Kyle Lowry’s ninth triple-double (15 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists) to cash as 6 ½-point road favorites. Leading scorer DeMar DeRozan sat out with an ankle injury as Toronto improved to 3-8 SU and 4-7 ATS the last 11 games. The Raptors have struggled with no rest this season by putting together a 3-7 SU record, with two of those victories coming at Air Canada Center.

Unlucky 13?

The Lakers have dropped 12 consecutive games on the road with the last highway victory coming on December 16 at Philadelphia. However, Los Angeles has cashed in five straight contests, including in recent away setbacks at Washington and Boston. The Lakers head to the Big Apple to face a Knicks’ squad that has lost three of its past four games, including Saturday’s 111-104 home defeat to the Cavaliers.

New York topped Los Angeles at Staples Center in its previous meeting in December, 118-112 as 2 ½-point favorites for its fifth straight win in the series. The Knicks have put together an 11-7 ATS mark in the favorite role this season, but has dropped eight of their last 10 games at Madison Square Garden since Christmas.

Pace Setters

Indiana is finally turning the corner after winning its sixth straight game in Saturday’s 105-84 blowout of Detroit. During this six-game hot streak, the Pacers have covered five times, while finishing UNDER the total five times. Indiana hosts Oklahoma City, seeking the sweep of the Thunder after knocking off OKC in overtime, 115-111 in November.

The Thunder rallied past the Trail Blazers on Sunday, 105-99 to barely cover as five-point home favorites. OKC has struggled with no rest by compiling a 3-7 SU and 4-6 ATS record, while losing nine of their past 13 games away from Chesapeake Energy Arena. However, the Thunder has captured wins in six of 10 opportunities on the road against Eastern Conference opponents.

Perfect 10

Entering mid-January, the Heat won only 11 games through the first three months of the season. Miami is rolling of late by putting together a 10-game winning streak, capped off by Saturday’s 125-102 blowout of Philadelphia as 9 ½-point favorites. The Heat embark on a four-game road trip against teams that all own records of below .500, starting in Minnesota. The Wolves will be without standout guard Zach Lavine for the rest of the season after tearing his ACL in Friday’s loss at Detroit. Minnesota has dropped three straight games, while going 1-7 ATS in the past eight contests.

Head-to-Head Trends

-- The Pistons swept the 76ers last season, but Philadelphia shocked Detroit in the first meeting this season, 97-79 as 12-point underdogs in December. In spite of that loss, Detroit owns a 7-2 SU/ATS mark at the Palace of Auburn Hills in the last nine matchups with Philadelphia.

-- Phoenix and New Orleans have played a pair of exciting overtime contests this season with the road team winning each time by one point apiece. The last-place squads hook up in the Big Easy as the Suns have won three of the past four matchups with the Pelicans.

-- Denver and Dallas have split a pair of matchups this season as the Nuggets outlasted the Mavericks, 117-107 at Pepsi Center in December. Four of the last five meetings have sailed OVER the total, including five of the past six in Denver.

-- Chicago has won four consecutive matchups with Sacramento, including a 102-99 victory at the United Center last month. The Kings have struggled off a home win this season, going 2-6 as they try to capitalize off Saturday’s upset of Golden State.

WASHINGTON (AP) Kyrie Irving scored 11 of his 23 points in overtime, including a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 35 seconds left, and the Cleveland Cavaliers edged the Washington Wizards 140-135 in a playoff-type atmosphere Monday night.

The loud, sellout crowd was standing, and so were the players on both benches, when James somehow missed a gimme layup late in the fourth quarter. Moments later, he banked in a maximum-degree-of-difficulty, step-back 3 with 0.3 seconds left to send the game overtime, where he fouled out and Irving took over for Cleveland.

James finished 32 points and a career-high 17 assists. Kevin Love had 39 points and 12 rebounds for the Eastern Conference leaders, who ended surging Washington's winning streaks of 17 in a row at home and seven in a row overall.

Bradley Beal had 41 points and eight assists for the Wizards, but he missed a potential tying 3 with about 5 seconds left in overtime.

HEAT 115, TIMBERWOLVES 113

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Goran Dragic scored 33 points and hit a career-high seven 3-pointers to lead Miami to its 11th straight victory.

Hassan Whiteside had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and the Heat shot 53.6 percent (15 for 28) from 3-point range. Miami made 10 more 3s than Minnesota and held on late after a furious comeback attempt by the Wolves.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 35 points and eight rebounds for the Timberwolves, who have lost four straight games. Andrew Wiggins added 27 points, but missed two shots with chances to win the game in the final 8.5 seconds.

The Heat led by as many as 14 points - the ninth straight game they have led by double digits - and now own the second-longest winning streak in the NBA this season. Golden State won 12 in a row in November.

BULLS 112, KINGS 107

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Dwyane Wade scored 31 points, including the final seven for Chicago in a victory over Sacramento.

After the Bulls squandered a 27-point lead in the second half, Wade hit a tiebreaking 20-footer to put them ahead for good, 109-107, with 13 seconds left. Then he stole the inbounds pass following a timeout and went the length of the court for a dunk to make it a four-point margin.

Wade added a free throw with a second to play following the second technical foul of the night on a furious DeMarcus Cousins, who thought he was fouled on a 3-point attempt. Cousins was ejected after picking up his 16th technical of the season, a total that triggers an automatic one-game suspension.

Just after the third quarter ended, a minor fracas broke out that involved Cousins, teammate Matt Barnes, Bulls assistant head coach Jim Boylen and Chicago forward Taj Gibson. Cousins shoved Boylen's arm away as tempers flared, and all three players were given technicals.

GRIZZLIES 89, SPURS 74

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph scored 15 points each, Mike Conley added 12 points and nine assists and Memphis held San Antonio to a season low in points.

The game was close until Memphis stretched the margin to double digits just past the midway point of the fourth quarter and maintained the cushion the rest of the way.

The Spurs ended a three-game winning streak and suffered through the absence of leading scorer Kawhi Leonard, a late scratch with a quad contusion.

David Lee led the Spurs with 14 points, converting all six of his shots. LaMarcus Aldridge added 13 points, connecting on only 4 of 19 shots. Danny Green and Manu Ginobili finished with 12 points each for San Antonio, which began an eight-game road trip.

PACERS 93, THUNDER 90

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Paul George had 21 points and eight rebounds, Jeff Teague scored 17 points and Indiana rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Oklahoma City.

Indiana has won seven straight games - its longest winning streak in almost two years.

Russell Westbrook led Oklahoma City with 27 points, a season-high 18 rebounds and nine assists, falling just short of his 26th triple-double this season.

The Thunder struggled mightily in the second half, giving away a 52-41 halftime lead by midway through the third quarter. The Pacers then went on a 12-4 run to take a 79-72 advantage early in the fourth and never trailed again.

RAPTORS 118, CLIPPERS 109

TORONTO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan had 31 points and Toronto overcame a triple-double from Blake Griffin to beat Los Angeles.

Griffin, who had his fifth career triple-double and first of the season in three quarters, finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. It wasn't enough to prevent the Clippers from a third straight defeat against the Raptors and their seventh in eight games in Toronto.

DeRozan, who had missed seven of Toronto's last eight games with a sprained ankle, was 11 of 22 from the floor, while Kyle Lowry scored 24 points and Jonas Valanciunas had 21 points and 12 rebounds for his 20th double-double of the season. The Raptors were 3-4 in DeRozan's absence and won for just the fourth time in their last 12 games.

JAZZ 120, HAWKS 95

ATLANTA (AP) - Gordon Hayward scored 30 points and Utah broke open a close game with 10 straight points in the third quarter to beat Atlanta.

Hayward scored a season-high 33 points in Utah's 105-98 win over Charlotte on Saturday and had 15 points as the Jazz built a 27-14 lead in the first quarter in this one.

Utah led 40-23 in the second quarter before Atlanta had a strong finish to the half and cut the deficit to 54-50.

The Jazz led by only three points early in the second half before a basket by George Hill, who had 22 points, started the decisive 10-0 run. Hill had two three-point plays to close the run.

Dennis Schroder led Atlanta with 21 points.

LAKERS 121, KNICKS 107

NEW YORK (AP) - Lou Williams scored 22 points, Nick Young had 17 and Los Angeles handed New York an embarrassing defeat to stop a 12-game losing streak on the road.

Julius Randle and Brandon Ingram added 14 points apiece for the struggling Lakers, who won for only the third time in 13 games overall. They had dropped 17 of their previous 18 away from home, with the only road victory during that stretch coming on Dec. 16 in Philadelphia.

It was Los Angeles' first victory over New York at Madison Square Garden in six years.

Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 26 points. Kristaps Porzingis and Brandon Jennings each had 16.

PELICANS 111, SUNS 106

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis capped his 34-point night with a key rebound and six made free throws in the final half-minute, Jrue Holiday scored five of his 30 points in the last minute and a half and New Orleans ended a four-game slide with a victory over Phoenix.

E'Twaun Moore scored 12 points for the Pelicans, who led by as many as 10 in the first half but found themselves behind for much of the fourth quarter until Davis and Holiday took over late.

T.J. Warren scored 20 points for the Suns, while Devin Booker, Eric Bledsoe and Leandro Barbosa each added 14 points. Tyson Chandler had 12 rebounds and 11 points for Phoenix, which dropped its second straight.

NUGGETS 110, MAVERICKS 87

DENVER (AP) - Will Barton scored 31 points, connecting on five 3-pointers, and Denver overcame the absence of three starters to beat Dallas.

Gary Harris added 20 points and Wilson Chandler had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets, who were without forward Danilo Gallinari because of a left groin strain and guard Emmanuel Mudiay due to a recurrence of a lower back injury. Also missing the game was forward Kenneth Faried, who was excused to tend to personal matters.

Dallas, which was also short-handed, was led by Seth Curry and Yogi Ferrell. They had 15 points apiece, but the loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Mavericks.

PISTONS 113, 76ERS 96

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - Andre Drummond had 16 points and 17 rebounds, and Detroit pulled away at the start of the third quarter for an easy victory over Philadelphia.

Detroit led 55-46 at halftime, then made its first six shots of the third quarter. The Pistons went on to outscore Philadelphia 34-21 in the period and were never seriously challenged after that.

Detroit had seven players in double figures. Marcus Morris led the way with 19 points, and Reggie Jackson scored 14. Jon Leuer, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Aron Baynes had 12 each.

Jahlil Okafor scored 16 points for the 76ers, who have lost four straight.

Tuesday’s six-pack

Six of the top minor league prospects for the Arizona Diamondbacks

1) Anthony Banda, P— Was 4-4, 3.67 in 13 AAA starts LY

2) Dawel Lugo, 3B— Hit .306 in half a season in AA Southern League

3) Domingo Leyba, 2B/3B— .288 hitter in three minor league season

4) Socrates Brito, OF— Got 95 AB’s (.179) with the parent club last summer

6) Anfernee Grier, OF— Auburn alum hit only .236 in his first pro season.

19) Jared Miller, P— Another in long line of Vanderbilt pitchers

**************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Looking back on Sunday night’s Super Bowl you have to tip your hat to Tom Brady; he is a great leader who finds a way to win. He has a tremendous will to win and that is obviously very important. It is also difficult to measure beforehand.

The Scouting Combine is March 3-6; kids will run the 40, lift weights, do lot of measurable things that scouts will use to justify draft picks. There is no metric to measure heart or desire and until there is, scouting will continue to be an inexact science.

Brady? 6th round pick
Russell Wilson and Joe Montana? 3rd round picks
Kurt Warner? Wasn’t even drafted
Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, Joey Harrington, JaMarcus Russell; all first round picks.

12) Is Brady the greatest QB ever? He is right up there with Elway-Marino-Montana-Fouts-Kelly, and his five Super Bowl rings are tops in the game. He is still going strong at age 39, so his resume isn’t complete yet. His WR’s have been some unusual guys; no Jerry Rice in the group, which makes him look even better.

11) As for the Falcons, they lost OC Kyle Shanahan to the 49ers, and now they have to pick up the pieces from the biggest collapse in NFL history. You look back on the past and it says teams who lose Super Bowls suffer a hangover— this hangover could also be the worst one yet.

I’m serious; only four teams in any NFL game ever have won after trailing by more than 25 points, and two of those were playoff games. This was the freakin’ Super Bowl.

Only four comebacks that were bigger than Super Bowl LI:
— 1/3/93— Oilers led 35-3, lost 41-38 in Buffalo (playoff game)
— 12/7/80— Saints led 35-7, lost 38-35 in San Francisco
— 1/4/14— Chiefs led 38-10, lost 45-44 in Indianapolis (playoff game)
— 9/21/97— Colts led 26-0, lost 37-35 in Buffalo

10) Pirates announced that Andrew McCutchen will move from center to right field this year, to improve the Pittsburgh defense.

9) Pitcher Jason Hammel gets $16M for two years from the Kansas City Royals.

8) Houston Rockets retired Yao Ming’s #11 last week; I’m thinking a lot of basketball fans in this country (myself included) don’t fully realize the impact Yao has had in promoting basketball around the world, especially in Asia. In other words, he helped make the Rockets and the NBA a freakin’ fortune.

7) Yogi Ferrell did so well on his 10-day contract with the Dallas Mavericks that they gave him a 2-year contract. He scored 30-something in Portland the other night, got paid the next day.

6) UTEP coach Tim Floyd’s first year as a head coach was 1986 at Idaho; his three assistant coaches that year were Larry Eustachy, now head coach at Colorado State, Kermit Davis, the head coach at Middle Tennessee State and Randy Bennett, the head coach at St Mary’s. Thats a really good coaching staff.

5) Oakland A’s are going to name the ballfield at the Oakland Coliseum “Rickey Henderson Field” to honor one of their great players who is also an Oakland native.

4) How the Celtics taught Lakers coach Luke Walton about love and basketball

This is a great article written by Baxter Holmes about Luke Walton and how his love of basketball came to be as a young kid. Well worth your time to read.

3) Good to read no bad comments about Houston as a host city for the Super Bowl. Everyone said the same thing— they crushed it!!! If the media doesn’t complain, you know its good.

2) When the Cleveland Browns had their expansion draft in 1998, they passed on selecting a quarterback the Rams left unprotected. Bad move; guy was Kurt Warner, who is now a Hall of Famer. Warner backed up Tony Banks in ’98, which wasn’t a fun year. Nick Saban actually won a lot of games with Banks as his QB at Michigan State. Not easy.

1999 was more fun, a hell of a lot more fun.

1— First spring training baseball games are Friday, February 24. Things ramp up a little early this year because of the World Baseball Classic. Training camps open next week.

Inside the Paint - Tuesday
February 7, 2017

It’s fair to say that many were expecting a Super Bowl hangover yesterday and while some NBA teams fell into that trap, the overall energy on Monday’s 11-game card was solid.

Favorites posted a 7-4 straight up mark but underdogs squeaked out a win at the betting counter with a 6-5 record against the spread. Home teams posted a 6-5 mark and the ‘under’ went 6-5 as well.

For those following, Cleveland’s 140-135 overtime win at Washington was incredible and the Wizards proved that their recent run is no fluke. Scott Brooks is proving that his record in Oklahoma City wasn't just about the players and I'd expect them to be a tough out in the postseason.

Another Eastern Conference squad that continues to surprise is Miami, who is now 11-0 SU and 10-0-1 ATS in its last 11 after nipping Minnesota 115-113 on the road last night. The Heat are only two games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, which still has 14 of 15 teams alive for the upcoming postseason.

The same can’t be said for the West as it appears seven of the first eight seeds could be clinched by the end of March. The final spot is also up for grabs but it looks like a five-horse race with Denver currently in position to advance.

Tuesday’s slate only has three games on tap and below is my quick handicap.

Brooklyn (9-42 SU, 26-23-2 ATS) at Charlotte (23-28 SU, 22-27-2 ATS)

Charlotte opened as a double-digit favorite (-10 ½) over Brooklyn and it’s tough to make a case for either club when you look at their current form. The Hornets have dropped seven straight games entering Tuesday’s tilt and they could be fatigued for this matchup after finishing up a three-game road trip on the West Coast. Charlotte has dropped three straight at home during this losing streak and the last home win came on Jan. 21, coincidentally versus the Nets.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn has lost nine in a road and it’s only managed to cover two of those games. The last win for the Nets came on Jan. 20 when they hammered the Pelicans 143-114 as 10-point road ‘dogs. The Nets have gone 2-16 SU and 9-9 ATS as double-digit underdogs this season. Total bettors should note that the ‘over’ is 14-4 in those games.

Charlotte has been installed as a double-digit favorite twice this season and has gone 2-0 SU and 0-2 ATS, with one of those outcomes mentioned above versus Brooklyn.

The Hornets have taken two of the first three meetings this season against the Nets and have captured seven of the previous 10 encounters. However, Brooklyn owns an 8-2 record versus the number over this span and has covered all three matchups this season as all the games were decided by seven points or less. The ‘under’ has gone 2-1.

Orlando (20-33 SU, 22-29-2 ATS) at Houston (37-17 SU, 30-24 ATS)

The Rockets are laying a healthy price (-11) to the Magic tonight and I’d be very cautious laying with the home squad. Houston has been in terrible ATS form, going 7-12 in 2017 and it enters this game on a 1-6 ATS slide. The Rockets comes into Tuesday off a 121-117 win over Chicago last Friday as 10-point home favorites, but they haven’t captured back-to-back wins since Jan. 10.

Orlando hasn’t been a great road team (11-17 SU, 15-13 ATS) but it is competitive with the spread. These teams met last month in Orlando and Houston captured a 100-93 victory as a five-point road favorite. Including that win, the Rockets are 7-3 SU in the last 10 meetings in this series. The games have been competitive during this stretch with the Magic producing a 7-3 ATS mark and only two of the losses were decided by double digits. Prior to this 3-0 run by the visitor, the host had won seven of the previous eight in this series.

Predicting an outright win by Orlando might be a bit of a stretch knowing Houston has gone 11-0 this season as a double-digit favorite. What’s even more impressive is that the Rockets are 10-1 ATS in those games. Make a note that the Magic are 2-4 SU when catching 10-plus points but 5-1 ATS. With those records presented, something has to give tonight.

Portland (22-30 SU, 22-30 ATS) at Dallas (20-31 SU, 27-24 ATS)

This contest is a quick rematch as the Mavericks dropped the Trail Blazers 108-104 last Friday as six-point road underdogs. Dallas also earned a tight road win (96-95) at the Moda Center in mid-December but Portland dropped Dallas 105-95 on Nov. 4 as a 2 ½-point road favorite.

For Tuesday, Dallas opened as one-point favorite but a couple offshore shops have Portland laying a point on the road.

The Mavericks had their four-game winning streak snapped last night in a humbling 110-87 loss at Denver. Prior to the setback, Dallas was on a 6-2 SU and 7-1 ATS run. A lot of the buzz with the Mavericks lately is the play of newly signed point guard Yogi Ferrell. Dallas is 4-1 since he’s started at the point for the injured Deron Williams and he's averaging 17.2 points and five assists during this span.

Bettors could be hesitant to back Dallas knowing they played on Monday. The Mavs started the season with 10 consecutive losses (3-7 ATS) on no rest but it did win their last situation when facing a back-to-back spot, which was a 104-97 victory over Cleveland on Jan. 30.

The Trail Blazers overachieved last season and a lot of bettors are still buying into the club that advanced to the second round of the playoffs. This is a much different team and very streaky, which is always a difficult handicap. Portland enters this game on a 1-3 run (2-2 ATS) but the three setbacks came by a combined 12 points. They’re 5-7 on the season in games decided by three points or less.

Portland’s decline has been worse on the road, where the club has gone 8-19 and it hasn’t been competitive for bettors, compiling a 10-17 ATS mark.

This game has the lowest total (204 ½) on the board and Dallas has been a solid ‘under’ bet (29-22) this season, especially at home (15-9).

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

— Alabama 90, South Carolina 86 4OT— Gamecocks were 3-30 from floor in first half, missing their last 17 shots of the half. Tide was 22-33 on foul line. Sindarius Thornwell was 25-33 on the foul line, BY HIMSELF- he had 44 points and 21 rebounds, but was 9-25 from floor.

— Siena 81, Iona 79- Saints trailed by double digits in second half.

— Penn State 70, Maryland 64— Young Terps lose their second game in a row.

— Michigan 86, Michigan State 57— Game was 55-29 at the half. Wow.

— Central Michigan 97, Ohio U 87— Marcus Keene had 41, his 5th game this season of 40+ points.

— Syracuse 82, Clemson 81— Orangemen hit a 3 from the right corner at the buzzer.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings

13) Betting handle on the Super Bowl in Las Vegas was $138.5M; hard to believe that sports betting won’t be legal everywhere in this country before too long.

If you care about such things, Vegas books made over $10M profit on that $138.5M handle.

12) Falcons hired Steve Sarkisian as its new OC, meaning Alabama will soon have its third OC of 2017, probably before Presidents’ Day.

Alabama got to the national title game with freshman Jalen Hurts at QB, but Hurts isn’t a good passer; Crimson Tide signed two freshman QB’s- that could be a contentious situation for the guy who winds up as the offensive coordinator- that guy will be Saban’s 6th OC in his ten years as Alabama’s head coach.

11) LSU football coach Ed Orgeron has himself a problem; after Signing Day, he demoted an assistant coach who was a prime recruiter in the talent-rich New Orleans area and now the HS coaches there are organizing a boycott of the LSU program. No bueno.

The assistant who was demoted has since bolted to Texas Tech.

10) Sam Vecenie covers basketball for The Sporting News; he knows his stuff. Of his top 16 prospects for the NBA Draft, 13 are college freshmen, three are foreign kids. This is part of why handicapping college basketball has gotten a lot harder: the best players are less dependable.

So the 13 best college basketball players this season were in high school LY; how many of them already have one foot in the NBA, and could care less about college? Maybe all, maybe none, but it is probably in middle somewhere. You think Ben Simmons cared about making the NCAA’s last season?

Used to be that high-level teams with lot of juniors/seniors were teams to focus on; now those kids are suspects, not good enough to move up to the next level. The most talented teams are also the least mature.

9) Friend of mine sent me some message boards from Kentucky/Louisville fans Monday; damn, those people are harsh!!! Lot of negativity- their basketball teams are really good.

As another friend of mine likes to say, “We’re with you win or tie, but we’re not crazy about tie.”

8) Kyle Shanahan’s hiring in San Francisco makes the Shanahans the 7th father/son head coaching combo in the NFL; the other 6?

Phillips-Shula-Nolan-Mora-Ryan-Fassel

Shanahan, by the way, will have control of the 53-man roster.

7) NHL’s Boston Bruins fired coach Claude Julien, kind of a gutless day to do it, with the victory parade for the Patriots burying hockey news in Wednesday’s papers.

Julien was 419-246 as Bruins’ coach; he won the Stanley Cup in 2011, lost in Finals two years later. He didn’t suddenly get stupid; the front office has done a cruddy job and Julien is the fall guy for that. He won’t be out of work long, if he doesn’t want to be.

6) Guy named Sports Dude on Twitter (@GSWahooFalcons) grew up in Cleveland, was born in Atlanta, lives in Oakland. Roots for Indians-Warriors-Falcons. Been a rough year for the man.

5) There are rumors that UConn may bolt the AAC to go the Big East for basketball next year, if they can find a landing spot for their football program. What they really need are healthy players; the AAC is a good enough league.

4) Timing is everything in life: Baylor hired a new football coach, because of a sex scandal that was overlooked by the previous coaching staff- the new football coach brought a strength coach in with him from Temple. Baylor football is trying to start over and remake is image.

In the history of bad timing, with people screaming at Baylor over the behavior of its players, it wasn’t good when the strength coach got busted in a prostitution sting over the weekend. The guy got fired immediately, even though his charge was only a Class B misdemeanor. One of the most expensive Class B misdemeanors ever.

3) DeMarcus Cousins got his 15th/16th technical fouls of the season Monday night; he gets an automatic one-game suspension for Wednesday’s game with Boston. Very talented player, but Cousins hurts himself with outbursts of anger directed towards the officials.

2) Kind of funny listening to people whine about the overtime rules in the NFL, when they had no idea what the rules were until Sunday night. Some people just like to complain.

1— Surprising fact: over the last five years, Baltimore Orioles are winningest team in the American League- they’ve outplayed their preseason projections by 14 games a year during that time. Not sure what he makes, but Buck Showalter is underpaid.
