Lakers battle Clippers

October 31, 2014

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS (1-0) at LOS ANGELES LAKERS (0-2)
Sportsbook.ag Line & Total: Clippers -12, Total: 210

The Clippers and Lakers renew their inter-city rivalry with the first meeting of the season on Friday night.

The Clippers tipped off their season Thursday with what was supposed to be an easy victory over the injury-riddled Thunder, but the game came down to the last second as they eked out a 93-90 victory as 12-point favorites. Oklahoma City even lost star PG Russell Westbrook early in the game as the Clippers shot a meager 34-for-87 (39.1%) from the field while hitting just 7-of-30 (23.3%) three-pointers. The Lakers had a tough season in 2013-14 and are starting off on the wrong foot once again with SU and ATS losses in each of their first two games. They were defeated in the two contests by an average of 19.0 PPG against Houston and Phoenix and saw their defense struggle mightily in allowing an average of 113.5 PPG to the opposition. SG Kobe Bryant is the only player on the team that has averaged more than 10 FG attempts per game.

The Clippers hold a dominant 7-1 mark (SU and ATS) in this L.A. matchup over the past two years. The games last season were not even close with the Clips going 3-1 and winning by an average of 35.7 PPG while the Lakers were able to take one contest by a score of 116-103. Trends show that the Clippers are 24-17 ATS (59%) as a double-digit favorite since the start of the 2012 season while the Lakers are 28-23 ATS (55%) when coming off a double-digit loss over the same timeframe. On the injury front, the Clippers have PF Glen Davis (groin) as questionable while the Lakers will be without PF Julius Randle (leg) and PG Steve Nash (back) for the season, while SG Nick Young (thumb) remains out until at least late November.

Last year the Clippers had the top scoring offense in the league with 107.9 PPG while making 47.5% of their shots (3rd in NBA). Their defense was able to hold the injury-riddled Thunder team to just 90 points and 6-of-21 shooting (28.6%) from three-point range after giving up 101.0 PPG last season to their opponents. PG Chris Paul (22.0 PPG, 7.0 APG, 3.0 SPG) was a poor 3-for-7 from the free-throw line in Thursday’s loss but has owned the Lakers to the tune of 20.4 PPG (49% FG), 11.7 APG and 2.5 SPG over 30 games. PF Blake Griffin (23.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG) was 8-for-18 from the field on Thursday and has averaged a double-double (21.4 PPG, 10.1 RPG) over his 15 games against the cross-town rivals. C DeAndre Jordan (8.0 PPG, 10.0 RPG) was the league leader in FG Pct. (67.6%) and rebounds (13.6 RPG) last season while not holding back in his four games against the Lakers, dropping 13.8 PPG, 11.3 RPG and 3.5 BPG in four contests. The shooting guard position is manned by the tandem of J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford, but Redick did not do well in the opener (1-for-10, 5 points) while Crawford was able to get 16 points with three steals on Thursday night.

The Lakers have scored just 94.5 PPG while shooting a poor 39.4% from the field over their first two contests. They have not been able to make up for the team’s horrible defensive play as they have allowed more than 107 points in each game while letting Phoenix shoot 54.9% in Wednesday's loss. SG Kobe Bryant (25.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 1.5 SPG) is the one bright spot on this team and they have leaned on him heavily so far as he has attempted 42 shots in the first two contests. He has now faced the Clippers 64 times (56 starts) in his career while averaging 25.9 PPG (47% FG), 5.2 RPG and 4.7 APG. PF Carlos Boozer (10.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG) was signed by the team to give them a veteran presence, but he is just 9-for-19 with eight turnovers so far. In his time facing the Clippers (30 games, 28 starts), Boozer has gone for 17.6 PPG (54% FG) and 10.2 RPG. PF Jordan Hill (6.5 PPG, 10.5 RPG) will be a key piece for this team in 2014-15 and he tallied 11.3 PPG (64% FG) with 7.7 RPG in his three games (1 start) against the Clippers last season.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

You could make a decent team out of guys who are free agents this winter……..

C—Russell Martin Geovany Soto

1B—Chase Headley

2B—Mark Ellis

SS—Hanley Ramirez

3B—Pablo Sandoval

OF—Alex Rios, Cory Rasmus, Melky Cabrera, Norichika Aoki

DH—Victor Martinez

SP—Jon Lester, Max Scherzer, James Shields

RP—Francisco Rodriguez

Mgr—Joe Maddon

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

13) As an A’s fan, I’m well-versed in losing good players to rich teams in free agency, but for the Rays to lose their manager……to the Cubs, well that has to sting a little extra. Money talks and Joe Maddon is cool for admitting it; plus if someone ever wins a title with the Cubs he becomes a God, so there is no downside there.

Remember that Maddon was close with the late Don Zimmer, who managed the Cubs from 1988-91 and made the playoffs with Chicago in ’89.

12) Read this week that 55% of gas stations in this country are selling gas for less than $3.00 a gallon; here in upstate NY, it is in the $3.30’s.

11) Florida State was down 21-0 at Louisville, 24-7 in third quarter, but Seminoles rallied as usual and won going away 42-31. Cardinals were 1-11 on third down. Needs to be said that Jameis Winston is now 21-0 as a starting QB at Florida State.

10) Tremendous exhibtion by Madison Bumgarner in World Series; my next question is this: Does his workload this season (270 IP) affect how Giants bring him along next spring? He is a valuable commodity, will be interesting to follow.

9) Rough debut for Lebron and Cavaliers, who lost to the Knicks; James was 5-15 from floor; Cleveland was actually +8 when Lebron was off the floor. NBA season is a long one; probably better to play Cleveland early on, before they get accustomed to playing with each other.

8) Dwight Howard made less than 55% of his foul shots the last three years; he hasn’t shot over 60% from the line since his rookie year. The guy makes $21M+ this season, how can he much such a hideous shooter? Doesn’t he practice? Least he could do would be to try shooting underhanded, like Wilt Chamberlain did. Rockets got KO’s from playoffs by one point last year; that’s one missed foul shot.

7) Remember Coach Reeves from the White Shadow, the great TV show in the late 70’s? Actor Ken Howard played Coach Reeves; saw him other day on an episode of Blue Bloods, playing a retired hockey player with dementia. Hard to believe its been over 30 years since White Shadow was on the air. Great show.

6) Found a link between White Shadow and Major League; remember Pedro Cerrano, the slugging first baseman who couldn’t hit a curveball?

Actor Dennis Haysbert played Cerrano; he also appeared in one 1979 episode of White Shadow as an opposing player. Haysbert was also the President in 24 and is the guy who does a lot of insurance commercials, can’t remember which company.

5) If DirecTV had a channel on NFL Sundays where DBs/WRs were miked and it was uncensored, I’d pay to listen to it. “Trash Talk Channel” would be a big success, but it would also incite and encourage more jawing which would be bad. Would be interesting to hear what gets said down on the field, though.

4) Explanation, please? Only 12 NBA players started all 82 games last year; four of the 12 played for Portland. This for a team that had Sam Bowie and Brandon Roy, two of the most injury-prone stars in NBA history.

3) Will college football teams run up scores to impress the selection committee? Would the committee be gullible enough to fall for such shenanigans? When you’re handicapping games, have to be wary of going against these contending teams, who might not be above adding on another score or two to impress people.

2) Horse named Free as a Bird was scratched from the Breeders Cup because the horse didn’t want to fly. Horse is stabled in Kentucky;it freaked out when they started the engines on the plane and he had to be taken off the plane. Expensive day for the owners.

1) Lakers lost their first two games by 18-20 points; when announcers are saying LA is anxiously awaiting the return of Nick Young to bolster the lineup, well you know things are bad-- Swaggy P isn’t that much of a difference maker.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

College football trends for Saturday's action

-- Underdogs covered eight of last ten North Carolina-Miami games.

-- Kansas State covered eight of last ten as a Big X home favorite.

-- Purdue covered seven of last ten as a road underdog.

-- Air Force covered 13 of last 17 games with Army, but is 0-5 in its last five games as a road favorite.

-- Baylor covered 19 of its last 22 home games.

-- Northwestern covered 14 of its last 21 games as a road underdog.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.....

13) Kevin Durant has a walking boot on his injured foot, Russell Westbrook broke his right hand Thursday night and the Oklahoma City Thunder are 0-2, with not much relief in sight before Thanksgiving. Like we said, its going to take 50 wins to make the playoffs in the west; Thunder aren’t putting a 50-win team on the floor anytime soon.

12) In 2008, NFL teams averaged 211.3 passing yards per game; so far this year, 241.7. That’s a 14.4% increase in six years.

11) ESPN the Magazine had some interesting stuff this month; from 2001-03, NFL tight ends were responsible for 15.8% of a team’s passing yardage. From 2012-now, that number has risen to 22.6%. Spread offenses are said to the reason why.

10) CBS is remaking the Odd Couple again next TV season, with Matthew Perry as Oscar Madison. This will make me sound old(er) but no one could top Jack Klugman as Oscar.

The next few notes are related to college basketball and again, they come from my reading of this week’s ESPN the Magazine…….

9) ESPN’s Jay Bilas says if Kentucky divided its team into two 6-man units, both units would be ranked in the top 25, that show much talent they have. Calipari’s team actually has too much talent; no way he can keep all those guys happy.

8) Wisconsin returns 82% of its minutes from last year; their defense slipped last year, curious to see if what is basically the same team will play better defense this season.

7) Duke’s 2-point FG% defense was 49.1% LY, which ranked 13th……in the 14-team ACC. Freshman C Jahlil Okafor is supposed to be really good, so we’ll see if Duke is better defensively this year.

6) Villanova was 8-1 LY in games decided by 5 or less points, or in OT; the other seven #1/#2 seeds in NCAA’s were a combined 43-22 (66.2%) in close games like those, which infers Villanova may have had luck on its side LY. Wildcats have a veteran team, should win Big East this year.

5) Gonzaga has a freshman named Domantas Sabonis, whose dad Arvydas was the best basketball very few people saw play, at least until he tore his Achilles tendon. The elder Sabonis played for Portland late in his career, after the injury, but was in Russia at the peak of his career, before the Internet. His son is supposed to be very good and should help the Zags win the WCC again.

4) VCU was a bully team in the A-14 last year; they forced turnovers on 23.6% of possessions, rebounded 35.5% of their missed shots, so they were just a lot more athletic than most opponents. But if you didn’t turn the ball over forced them to set up in the half court, they made only 44.6% of their 2-point shots, 9th in a 14-team league. If you held your own on the boards, then they struggled to score.

3) SMU made 37.9% of its 3-pointers last year, which is very good, but they ranked 339th out of 351 D-I teams when it came to %age of shots that were 3’s.

Larry Brown is old-fashioned and doesn’t like the trey, despite playing/coaching in the ABA. We’ll see if Coach Brown, a media darling for sure, gets his team in the NCAAs after they were a disappointment in missing it LY.

2) Syracuse scored 63 or less points in 11 of its last 13 games LY and lost 59% of its minutes played from LY. Boeheim always has players, but his players this year are very young and could struggle some in an improved ACC. Don’t forget, Louisville is in the ACC now.

1) Say what you want about Jameis Winston, but he is 21-0 as a starting QB in college and he’s stared down a few double digit deficits.

His career going forward is going to be fascinating to study, as he heads to the fishbowl that is playing QB in the NFL.

Preview: Warriors (2-0) at Trail Blazers (1-1)

Date: November 02, 2014 9:00 PM EDT

Klay Thompson wasted little time beginning to repay the Golden State Warriors for their faith in him and he'll try to follow a career-high scoring performance by leading the team to its best start in 20 seasons.

The Warriors will seek to improve to 3-0 on Sunday night when they visit the Portland Trail Blazers, who have also struggled to contain Stephen Curry in recent matchups.

Golden State signed Thompson to a maximum four-year extension worth around $70 million Friday and in his first game with his new contract, the guard scored 41 points on 14-of-18 shooting in a 127-104 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I'm not going to lie; it's a great feat," Thompson said. "It's something I'll look back on one day and say, 'That's cool.'"

He went 4 for 14 from the field and scored 19 points in a 95-77 win in Sacramento in Wednesday's opener.

Curry had 31 points and 10 assists as the Warriors improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2010-11. Golden State hasn't won its first three games since beginning 5-0 in a 26-win 1994-95 campaign.

The Warriors split their four matchups with the Blazers last season and were denied a third consecutive win in Portland on April 13 with a 119-117 overtime loss. Curry had 47 points in that defeat, tying the second-highest scoring performance in his career, and is averaging 40.7 in his last three matchups.

Golden State's point guard has gone 18 for 34 (52.9 percent) from 3-point range in those games and shot 52.6 percent overall (40 for 76). Curry is averaging 29.7 points in six lifetime visits to Portland, his best showing in any Western Conference building, and has gone 25 of 50 from beyond the arc.

Thompson is averaging 24.6 points and shooting 48.6 percent from 3-point range (18 of 37) in his last five meetings. He's averaging 25.3 in his last three visits to Portland, his best in any arena in the past two seasons, and has gone 14 of 24 from outside the arc.

Portland opened its season with a decisive 106-89 win over visiting Oklahoma City on Wednesday but fell 103-94 in Sacramento two days later. The Trail Blazers allowed the Kings to pull away with 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

"We can't be satisfied because we had a good season last year," forward Nicolas Batum said while referring to a 54-28 finish. "People want to beat us now. So if we want to be in the same position as last year we've got to come out and be strong and be a good team.

"We've got to come out Sunday. A big team is coming to town, another playoff team, so we need this win."

LaMarcus Aldridge had a team-best 22 points in the losing effort, and Damian Lillard had 20 despite missing nine of 13 shots. He scored 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting in the victory over Oklahoma City.

"I'm just trying to be patient," Lillard said. "I'm just trying to find my way. We played the same style that we've been playing and my job is to find my way."

Lillard shot 31.0 percent in last season's series with Golden State - his worst against any West opponent - but averaged 18.8 points.

Aldridge is averaging 24.0 points and 14.8 rebounds in his last four meetings. Batum has a combined 41 points on 63.6 percent shooting (14 of 22) and 26 rebounds in the past two visits from Golden State.

Preview: Kings (1-1) at Clippers (2-0)

Date: November 02, 2014 3:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Clippers overcame two less-than-impressive performances to open their season with consecutive victories.

If recent history is any indication, a third straight win is very likely.

The Clippers seek their first 3-0 start in seven years Sunday when they face the Sacramento Kings - a team they've dominated recently.

"First thing I asked our guys, 'what was our record,' when I walked in," coach Doc Rivers said. "They all yelled, '2-0.' That's what we are. You are what your record says we are, so we're 2-0."

The Clippers (2-0) squandered a 10-point lead with under six minutes remaining Thursday against Oklahoma City. They then watched a 15-point first-half lead over the Lakers on Friday turn into a fourth-quarter deficit, before pulling away late for a 118-111 victory.

"It's just a lack of effort on our part, I thought," Blake Griffin said. "I thought we just got complacent, myself, everybody, I thought we just, I don't want to say gave that away, but we let our guard down."

Despite his disappointment, Griffin tallied 39 points against the Lakers - the fifth-best total of his career. He has 62 points through two games, and his current 81.8 free throw percentage is a drastic improvement from last season's 71.5 percent clip.

'Just carrying over from last year, and all the work I put in this summer, it's confidence-building,' Griffin said.

Chris Paul also seems to be in midseason form after he had 12 points and 10 assists Friday. He also displayed his defensive prowess, limiting Kobe Bryant to 1-of-7 shooting in the fourth quarter.

Since Paul joined Griffin and the Clippers for the 2011-12 season, Los Angeles has gone 10-1 against the Kings - the most wins it has against any opponent over the past three seasons.

Los Angeles has won seven straight at home in the series since a 102-89 defeat on March 21, 2010. Extending that run would make the Clippers 3-0 for the first time since they opened 4-0 in 2007-08.

Sacramento (1-1) hopes to end a five-game overall skid in the series and win its road opener for the first time in four years.

The Kings struggled offensively in their season opener, scoring 77 points in a loss to Golden State. However, they bounced back Friday with a 103-94 win over Portland, as Rudy Gay scored 40 points - one shy of his career best - and made 11 of his 13 free throws.

'I was waiting for a game like that from Rudy,' Kings coach Michael Malone said. 'To step up the way he did, getting to the foul line, was great.'

Darren Collison, who played in 80 games for the Clippers last year and signed with the Kings this offseason, contributed 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists Friday.

"He was terrific," Malone said of Collison. "He's done a great job defensively...and running our team and getting to the free throw line."

Free throws have become a recurring theme for the Kings, who have shot 35 in each of their two games, converting 81.4 percent.

Turnovers have also been a focus. Sacramento finished last season with the eighth-most turnovers in the NBA (15.2 per game) and opened this season with a dreadful 27-turnover performance against Golden State. The Kings dropped that number to 10 versus Portland.

'It's amazing what happens when you don't beat yourself,' Malone said. 'Our ball movement and execution was much better.'

The Clippers pose a challenge to that ball security, as they have forced 20.5 turnovers per game this season.

Preview: Raptors (2-0) at Heat (2-0)

Date: November 02, 2014 6:00 PM EDT

The Miami Heat are enjoying their best start in three seasons with Chris Bosh leading the charge.

While the Heat have dominated Bosh's former team over the past few years, the Toronto Raptors are also unbeaten heading into Sunday's showdown.

Miami tries to extend its winning streak against Toronto to 16 as these Eastern Conference foes square off in South Beach.

After totaling 26 points and 15 rebounds in Wednesday's season-opening 107-95 victory over Washington, Bosh scored 30 in Saturday's 114-96 win at Philadelphia. The Heat, who've outscored the Wizards and 76ers by a combined 24 points in the fourth quarter, hadn't won their first two games since opening 5-0 in 2011-12.

Bosh has been terrific after playing in LeBron James' shadow over the previous four seasons. The nine-time All-Star has gone 5 of 9 from 3-point range and 15 of 16 from the foul line. He's also dished out four assists in each of the first two games - a number he reached only three times in all of 2013-14.

"When you add new faces to a team, guys are trying to find their own way and find where they can be comfortable in the offense," coach Erik Spoelstra said.

Mario Chalmers scored 18 points off the bench Saturday while newcomers Luol Deng and Shawne Williams added 15 apiece. Dwyane Wade shot 4 of 18 and finished with nine points after scoring 21 in the opener.

"Everyone is getting opportunities, which is a little different than we've had," said Wade, who also had 10 assists.

The Heat have won 15 consecutive meetings against the Raptors, with the last 14 coming since Bosh left Toronto in 2010.

Bosh, the Raptors' all-time leading scorer with 10,275 points, averaged 10.0 points on 38.7 percent shooting in three games against his former team last season.

Despite the one-sided series, Toronto is unlikely to go down easy if its early-season efforts are any indication. The Raptors pulled out a 108-95 victory at Orlando on Saturday, improving to 2-0 for the first time since winning their first three games in 2008-09.

DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points and Kyle Lowry added 21, going a combined 17 of 21 from the foul line. Toronto, which got by Atlanta 109-102 in Wednesday's opener, has made 65 of 81 free throws while its opponents are 21 for 41.

"It's not just me being aggressive at getting to the free throw line, it's all of us," said DeRozan, who finished fourth in the league with 519 made foul shots last season. "If we get teams in the penalty situation early and take advantage of it, that plays a big part of us being successful."

The Raptors could be especially eager to get to the line if their shooting doesn't improve. Toronto owns a field-goal percentage of 40.5 through the first two games, down from last season's mark of 44.5.

Amir Johnson scored 14 points Saturday while James Johnson had 12 off the bench. Toronto had six players in double figures after having seven score at least 10 against the Hawks.

"It's not easy trying to get everyone involved, but we've got a good group of guys and no one is being selfish so far," Lowry said.

The Raptors have lost nine straight in Miami since a 101-95 victory Nov. 19, 2008.
