Carmelo Anthony doubtful vs. OKC

The New York Knicks will likely be short-handed for Friday's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The team has listed forward Carmelo Anthony as doubtful for Friday's game due to back spasms. Anthony said on Wednesday that he remained "stiff" and "sore" due to the spasms, which surfaced on Monday night late in the first half of the Knicks' loss to the Houston Rockets.

Still nothing but unders at the Toyota Center

The Houston Rockets remain the top under team in the NBA, but that streak gets even better when they play at home. All eight games in the Toyota Center this season have failed to top the closing total.

The Rockets have averaged 94.6 points per game at home, while only allowing 90.1 ppg.

The Houston Rockets host the Los Angeles Clippers Friday.

Preview: Mavericks (12-5) at 76ers (0-15)

Date: November 29, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

Considering their next two opponents, the Philadelphia 76ers may wind up breaking more than just a franchise record for consecutive losses to begin a season.

And to make matters worse, they need to beat the odds without their leading scorer.

The 76ers will try to avoid setting a new team mark for season-opening futility when they begin a tough two-game stretch Saturday night against the Dallas Mavericks, who beat them by 53 points earlier this month.

Philadelphia tied the franchise record with a 15th straight loss to begin 2014-15, falling 99-91 at home to Brooklyn on Wednesday. The 76ers also opened 0-15 in 1972-73 on their way to setting an NBA record for fewest wins in an 82-game schedule at 9-73.

With the defending-champion San Antonio Spurs visiting Wells Fargo Center on Monday after this matchup against the Mavericks (12-5), Philadelphia could wind up facing NBA history when it hits the road Wednesday to take on Minnesota.

The Nets hold the league record for losses to begin a season, dropping their first 18 in 2009-10, and the 76ers will be on the verge of matching that dubious distinction by the time they get to Minneapolis if they can't manage a victory against the Mavs or Spurs.

"I see good things," coach Brett Brown said. "It's unfortunate for those guys. I bleed for those guys that they can't get a win to validate the work they have put in."

As if facing the Texas tandem wasn't already hard enough, the 76ers also announced Friday that Tony Wroten, who is averaging team highs of 17.9 points and 6.3 assists, will be out at least a week after spraining his right knee Wednesday. Wroten, one of only two Sixers averaging double figures in points, will be re-evaluated Dec. 5.

Losing their starting point guard is not going to help the NBA's worst offense - which is scoring 89.9 points per game - against its best.

Dallas is averaging a league-leading 109.1 points following a 106-102 win at Toronto on Friday in a matchup of the league's top two scoring teams. Monta Ellis had 30 points to lead the Mavs, who trailed 10-0 early on.

"You know, we've had some struggles in recent games," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle told the team's official site. "And this was hard-fought, so I give our guys a lot of credit."

What could serve as motivation for the Sixers is their humiliating 123-70 loss in Dallas on Nov. 13, a margin of victory that set a Dallas team record. Philadelphia had more turnovers (28) than field goals (23) in that contest.

While there is slight reason for optimism due to the Mavs scoring at a higher clip at home (115.9 points per game) than on the road (101.4) this season, the 76ers' defense has been just as abysmal as their offense with 105.4 points allowed per game.

Philadelphia did show some signs of life against Brooklyn, rallying from a 20-point deficit and taking the lead early in the fourth quarter, and K.J. McDaniels came off the bench to match Wroten with a team-high 18 points.

"I thought we played some of our best basketball of the year and also some of our poorest," Brown told the team's official site.

With Wroten sidelined, the Sixers need more from McDaniels and Michael Carter-Williams, who is second on the team with 14.3 points per game but was erratic with a 1-for-9 shooting performance and four points against the Nets before fouling out.

The 76ers have lost four straight and 13 of 16 against Dallas.

Preview: Pelicans (7-7) at Wizards (9-5)

Date: November 29, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

After enduring their first back-to-back defeats, the Washington Wizards know they need to get back to their defensive ways.

The Wizards open a four-game homestand Saturday night against New Orleans with the Pelicans trying to avoid a sixth consecutive loss in the series.

Washington (9-5) had won five of six before dropping its last two, 106-102 to Atlanta on Tuesday and 113-87 at Cleveland the next night. The Wizards never really had a shot after falling behind by 18 in the first quarter against the Cavaliers.

"When you dig a hole of 15 or 16 points right off the bat against a team like this, you're going to have trouble," coach Randy Wittman said. "Our defensive pressure the last two games has been gone for whatever reason. We've got to get that back."

Washington, which surrendered its highest point total of the season Wednesday, dropped to 2-5 when allowing 100 or more.

"We're at our best when we're keeping teams under 100, playing games in the 80s and 90s," veteran Paul Pierce said. "We understand that we're a defensive team first and that's what we hang our hat on, so we just have to do a better job of digging in."

Rasual Butler scored a season-high 23 points off the bench, but John Wall finished with a season-low six on 2-of-6 shooting after failing to get to the foul line for the first time. He had five of the team's 18 turnovers, giving him 20 in the last four games.

The Wizards have been outscored 21-2 in transition over the last two games.

"It starts with our defense. When we're causing turnovers, when we're consistently getting stops then we're able to get out in transition," Pierce said. "We have to understand it's a long season. You go through some adversity. Right now is our first hit of adversity, losing a couple games in a row. So we'll see how we respond with this homestand."

The Wizards have held the Pelicans to an average of 87.0 points during their five-game series winning streak. New Orleans is 4-8 in the nation's capital, with its last win coming 92-81 on Jan. 1, 2011.

The Pelicans (7-7) are looking to avoid a third consecutive loss overall after opening a two-game trip with Friday's 100-91 defeat at Atlanta. Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson scored 20 points apiece, but New Orleans shot just 40.4 percent.

"We missed a ton of shots," coach Monty Williams said. "For whatever reason we've hit a bit of a bump here, and we just have to work our way through it."

Anthony Davis came in averaging 25.4 points to rank second in the league before matching the season low 14 he had in the previous game. He's shot 34.6 percent over that stretch, significantly lower than his season mark of 55.3.

New Orleans is averaging 98.1 points on the road compared to 107.0 at home.

The Wizards are 0-3 without center Nene, who could miss a third consecutive game due to plantar fasciitis. Nene scored 30 points in a 94-93 win over New Orleans on Feb. 22, including the winning dunk with one second left.

Davis scored a combined 47 points on 61.3 percent shooting in two games against Washington last season.

Preview: Hornets (4-13) at Hawks (8-6)

Date: November 29, 2014 7:30 PM EDT

Things appeared to be looking up for the Charlotte Hornets following a victory over the Atlanta Hawks three weeks ago.

However, very little has gone right since.

The Hornets look to avoid a ninth straight loss Saturday night when they visit a Hawks team trying to build on an encouraging win.

Two nights after ending a 20-game losing streak to Miami, Charlotte (4-13) rallied from 10 down to beat Atlanta 122-119 in double overtime Nov. 7.

Lance Stephenson hit a 33-foot jumper off the glass at the buzzer for the winner and Al Jefferson scored a season-high 34 for the Hornets, who won their second in a row against the Hawks after losing the previous 11.

Jefferson has routinely frustrated Atlanta, averaging 25.3 points and 14.8 rebounds in his last four meetings. After beating the Hawks to pull Charlotte's record back to .500, the veteran center suggested the back-to-back wins over a pair of playoff teams from last season had the club headed in the right direction.

The Hornets, though, have one win in 11 games since, and have been outscored by an average of 11.8 points during an eight-game skid. They had a chance to end their slide Friday against surging Golden State, but ultimately coughed up a 10-point lead in the final 14 minutes of a 106-101 loss.

Charlotte shot 28.6 percent in the fourth quarter as Stephenson and Jefferson combined for five points. The Hornets had 80 points on 50.8 percent shooting after three quarters.

Despite the cold shooting down the stretch, coach Steve Clifford pinned the loss on Charlotte's rebounding woes. The Hornets were outrebounded 16-8 on the offensive glass and have been outworked on the boards in seven of their last eight games.

"It never matters how well you play if you're going to get tattooed on the glass," Clifford said.

The Hornets had a 51-38 edge on the boards in the first meeting with the Hawks, who are 28th in rebounding differential at minus-3.4 per game.

Atlanta (8-6) was outrebounded for the fifth time in six games Friday against New Orleans, but put together one of its best defensive halves of the season to pull out a 100-91 win. After allowing an average of 110.2 points in splitting their previous six games, the Hawks limited the Pelicans to 28 on 29.7 percent shooting in the first half.

"We just came out aggressive on both ends," Jeff Teague said of the Hawks, who led by 13 at the break. "The team did a really good job of playing good team defense. We just helped one another."

Teague continued his hot stretch with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting. He is averaging 25.8 points on 53.8 percent shooting in his last five games after averaging 11.0 points on 40.0 percent in his previous four. He went 9 of 23 for 22 points against the Hornets and added a season-high 15 assists.

Charlotte's Marvin Williams missed his first game of the season Friday with a strained shoulder and will not play against Atlanta.

Preview: Pacers (7-9) at Cavaliers (7-7)

Date: November 29, 2014 7:30 PM EDT

It was surely a joyful Thanksgiving for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who entered the two-day break on the right foot.

The Indiana Pacers have to be thankful after getting David West back.

Cleveland tries to pick up where it left off Saturday night against a visiting Pacers team that's beginning to get healthy.

It's been an inconsistent start to the season for the Cavaliers (7-7), who recently followed a four-game winning streak with four consecutive defeats. However, Cleveland has since gotten back on track behind a pair of one-sided victories, 106-74 over Orlando on Monday and 113-87 over Washington two days later.

"We've played some good basketball the last couple games. The thing is you never get too high, you never get too low," LeBron James said. "You just try to improve on the things that you can, you watch film and go from there.

"We have to continue to push forward (Saturday) as well."

James had 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists against the Wizards, who beat them 91-78 five nights earlier. Kevin Love added 21 points and Kyrie Irving had 18 as six players scored in double figures for Cleveland.

The Cavaliers outscored Washington 17-2 in transition and 31-16 at the foul line, shot 51.4 percent overall and had 24 points off 18 turnovers.

Cleveland went 2-14 against the Pacers over the previous four seasons, but it could have the edge Saturday with James back in town. The Cavs have won 16 of their last 18 in the series when James plays, a stretch during which he's averaged 28.2 points.

James, who helped knock Indiana out of the playoffs in each of the previous two seasons with Miami, has scored a combined 74 points in his last two regular-season meetings against the Pacers.

Indiana (7-9) has won six of nine after easily getting by Orlando 98-83 on Friday.

Rodney Stuckey scored a season-high 24 points and West debuted with 18 after missing the first 15 games with an ankle injury. C.J. Watson also made his first appearance after working his way back from a foot injury, scoring nine on 4-of-4 shooting off the bench.

"It's good to be able to win this game here and keep moving from here," West said. "We've just got to continue to grow. As we get more healthy and get more guys back in the rotation, we just keep improving and get better game to game."

The Pacers outrebounded the Magic 53-32 - including 17-2 on the offensive glass - despite the absence of All-Star center Roy Hibbert, who's missed the last three games with an ankle injury. Lavoy Allen had 10 points and 14 boards for his second double-double.

"These guys have done a great job attacking the glass," West said. "We've got one of the best rebounders in the NBA with Lavoy. He's a legitimate threat on that glass. He keeps possessions alive and it's just a part of what we're going to do as the year wears on."

Stuckey is starting to find his form after dealing with a foot injury earlier this season, scoring a combined 46 points on 51.4 percent shooting in the last two games.

"I'm still getting my legs underneath me," said Stuckey, whose team continues to play without Paul George and George Hill. "When everyone went down there was a lot of uncertainty. We're happy where we're at right now. We just got to get better and take it one day at a time."

Preview: Rockets (12-4) at Bucks (10-7)

Date: November 29, 2014 9:00 PM EDT

The injuries continue to pile up for the Houston Rockets, who saw another key piece go down last time out.

Short-handed Houston tries to get back on track Saturday night when it visits the surprising Milwaukee Bucks, who are on the verge of their longest winning streak in two seasons.

The Rockets (12-4) had won three in row before falling 102-85 to the Clippers on Friday. Houston entered the game without All-Star center Dwight Howard, Terrence Jones and starting point guard Patrick Beverley before losing Beverley's replacement Isaiah Canaan to a sprained left ankle in the second quarter.

While Howard is making the trip to Milwaukee, he's expected to miss a sixth consecutive game with a knee injury. Beverley and Canaan, meanwhile, aren't traveling with the team and Jones remains out with a leg issue.

Houston was limited to 39.0 percent shooting against Los Angeles, going 10 of 37 from 3-point range.

"Right now we just have to figure out a way to knock them down," said Jason Terry, who had two points on 1-of-6 shooting. "We'd like to find a more consistent way of getting some good looks, but it is what it is. We're down bodies, we just have to scrap and claw and find a way."

James Harden finished with 16 points after averaging 31.3 over the previous three games. Canaan and Trevor Ariza scored 13 apiece while rookie Tarik Black had 11 and nine rebounds.

"We'll be alright," said Harden, whose team is 6-1 on the road. "Great bounce back game for us tomorrow, we have to be ready."

The Rockets have taken three of four from Milwaukee, including both matchups last season thanks to a combined 47 points and 27 rebounds from Howard. Jones scored a career-high 36 in a 114-104 home win Jan. 18.

The Bucks (10-7) aren't to be taken lightly after winning six of eight, including three straight by an average of 15.0 points. Milwaukee hasn't posted four consecutive victories since Feb. 26-March 4, 2013.

The Bucks return home after getting by Detroit 104-88 on Friday, their second win in the series in four days. Ersan Ilyasova posted a season-high 22 points and Jared Dudley added 16 as Milwaukee held a 69-13 edge in bench scoring.

"It's all about being unselfish," Ilyasova said. "We just shared the ball. Spreading out the floor, get opportunities and knocking down those open shots - we did a good job of doing those things. ... We're kind of on a rhythm right now. From this point it's up to us to play the same way tomorrow."

The Bucks, who didn't win their 10th game last season until Feb. 18, shot 50.6 percent and matched a season-high with 30 assists.

"I thought it was a great team effort. All 10 guys found a way to help us win," coach Jason Kidd said. "Everybody is going to find a chance to help pitch in. Going into a back-to-back that really shows the maturity of our team. Our guys are playing at a high level."

Brandon Knight came in averaging a team-leading 18.0 points before scoring a season-low six on 2-of-7 shooting. He averaged 24.5 points on 52.8 percent shooting against the Rockets last season.

Zaza Pachulia missed Friday's game for personal reasons, leaving his status for this one unclear. Fellow big man John Henson is also uncertain to be available due to a foot injury.

Preview: Clippers (10-5) at Jazz (5-11)

Date: November 29, 2014 9:00 PM EDT

Fatigue has proven to be no enemy to the Los Angeles Clippers, and the same can be said of the Utah Jazz in recent seasons.

The Clippers can cap a seven-game trip with an 11th straight victory over the Jazz, who have dropped a season-high four straight heading into this Saturday night matchup.

Los Angeles (10-5) seeks a 6-1 record on this trip after coasting past Houston 102-85 on Friday. Now the Clippers get a chance to improve upon their NBA-best 4-0 record in the second half of back-to-back games.

When the Clippers get back home, they will have traveled 7,231 miles during this trip. It is the second-longest trip by distance that any team in the NBA will travel in a seven-game stretch this season.

'The road is hard,' coach Doc Rivers said. 'Winning is hard. The fact that we're doing it on the road is great.'

Blake Griffin is third in the NBA with 29.5 points per game in the second half of back-to-backs. Frontcourt mate DeAndre Jordan has made 19 of 21 shots in those games for a league-best 90.5 field-goal percentage.

Those big men combined for 23 rebounds Friday as they took advantage of a Rockets club missing Dwight Howard. Griffin posted his fourth double-double with 30 points.

'It tells you that their confidence is starting to grow,' Rivers said. 'I've always thought that when your team has confidence they have energy. They don't get tired. I thought that's what that was.'

Griffin and Jordan have been in the lineup for every game of this run over Utah (5-11), which hasn't defeated Los Angeles since a 108-79 rout Jan. 17, 2012.

Griffin is averaging 24.8 points during this win streak over the Jazz in which Jordan is averaging 9.6 rebounds.

The Jazz are searching for answers after losing 97-82 at Oklahoma City on Wednesday. They matched their lowest point total of the season and were outscored in every quarter.

"I thought we were really ready to play, and we played very, very well on both ends of the court," coach Quin Snyder said. "Then the game got more physical and it knocked us back."

Gordon Hayward scored a team-high 24 points for Utah, which also finished with a season-low three points from its bench.

The Jazz could have a tough time containing Griffin, whose third effort in which he had at least 30 points required him to log just over only 30 minutes Friday. He scored 12 points in the first quarter and sat out nearly the entire fourth.

'I tried to be more aggressive early - getting to the lane,' Griffin said. 'We just did a good job of moving the ball early. Even though they were banged up, I thought it was a good test for us.'

He starred in the first matchup against Utah this season with 31 points on 14-of-21 shooting and nine rebounds in a 107-101 home win Nov. 3. Hayward led the Jazz with 27 points.
