Wednesday's MLB Game of the Day: Pirates at Mets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Syndergaard went up against the Pirates last Wednesday and ran his streak of appearances allowing two or fewer earned runs to eight.

Pittsburgh Pirates at New York Mets (A: +155, H: -170, Total: 7.0)

The New York Mets’ problems on offense reached a low on Tuesday, when Pittsburgh rookie Jameson Taillon took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his second career start. The Mets will try to bounce back from that shutout loss and end a three-game slide when they host the Pirates in the second of a three-game series on Wednesday.

New York has dropped 10 of its last 16 games and is scoring an average of 2.7 runs in that span, including two or fewer nine times. The Mets scraped out three hits in Tuesday’s 4-0 setback and Michael Conforto, who is limited to pinch hitting after receiving a cortisone injection in his ailing left wrist, struck out in his lone plate appearance. The Pirates aren’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard but did manage to snap a five-game slide with Tuesday’s triumph. Pittsburgh (33-31) has dropped 12 of its last 17 to flirt with the .500 mark but three of the five wins in that span have come over New York.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), SNY (New York)

INJURY REPORT:

Pirates - C F. Cervelli (15-Day DL, hand).

Mets - 2B N. Walker (Questionable Wednesday, back), 3B D. Wright (15-Day DL, back), 1B L. Duda (15-Day DL, back), C T. d'Arnaud (15-Day DL, shoulder).

WEATHER REPORT: The weather conditions look good for tonight's game at Citi Field in New York. Gmae-time temperatures are expected to be in the 80's with low humidity. There will be some scattered clouds but forecasted chance of precipitation is zero percent. There will be a slight 5-10 mph breeze blowing out to center field.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Jeff Locke (5-4, 5.38 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (6-2, 2.00)

The Pittsburgh rotation took a major hit when ace Gerrit Cole was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, and some consistency from Locke would certainly help the team bridge the gap to Cole’s return. Locke tossed a three-hit shutout at Miami on May 30 and followed it up with seven strong innings in a win over the Los Angeles Angels on June 4 but was demolished for 11 runs on 11 hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings at Colorado on Thursday. The New Hampshire native is looking for his first win against New York after posting a 0-1 mark with a 4.20 ERA in his first three chances.

Syndergaard went up against the Pirates last Wednesday and ran his streak of appearances allowing two or fewer earned runs to eight by scattering two on seven hits over six innings in a no decision. The 23-year-old Texan was not quite as sharp as usual last time out and ended up walking more than one (two) for the first time since May 6. Syndergaard is searching for his first win against Pittsburgh and is 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA at home this season.

TRENDS:

* Pirates are 1-5 in their last 6 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
* Pirates are 5-0 in Locke's last 5 starts vs. National League East.
* Mets are 1-5 in their last 6 home games.
* Mets are 7-1 in Syndergaard's last 8 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
* Over is 7-1-1 in Locke's last 9 starts vs. a team with a winning record.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Regular season plus/minus for the Golden State Warriors this year:

+1,068-- Draymond Green (70% of minutes)

+1,023-- Steph Curry (67%)

+835-- Klay Thompson (67%)

+454-- Andre Iguodala (43%)

+451-- Harrison Barnes (51%)

+399-- Andrew Bogut (36%)

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Baseball's interleague trading deadline is July 31, but when I was a kid, back in the 70's, it was June 15. On June 15, 1976, the A's tried to sell Rollie Fingers/Joe Rudi to the Red Sox and Vida Blue to New York. Oakland had won the last five AL West titles, but had lost Catfish Hunter to free agency, and the owner was bailing out.

Now I was a 16-year old high school junior; this didn't set well with me, someone who had zero idea how the real world works. Three days later, the baseball commish nixed the deals and the players went back to Oakland, but things were never the same again.

I guess that day was when it hit me that sports are a big business, not just something that people do for fun.

12) Nationals 5, Cubs 4 (12)-- Chicago is now 40-4 when it scores 4+ runs. This had the feel of a postseason game.

11) Last time the #1 pick in NBA Draft came from the Pac-12 (or Pac-8 or Pac-10) was Bill Walton way back in 1974.

10) Philadelphia Eagles have doled out $280,254,834 in guaranteed salary so far in 2016; next highest figure in NFL this year: Giants, at roughly $141M.

9) You don't see a starting pitcher thrown out of a game for arguing balls, strikes very often; Tampa Bay's Jake Odorizzi got run by umpire Jerry Meals Tuesday nite. Meals is a notorious hitters' ump (over is 28-13-3 in Meals' games last two years).

8) Last major league player to play every position in one game: Shane Halter, way back on October 1, 2000 for Detroit.

7) Obscure baseball record: since 1938, of all the hitters to bat .300+ in a season, Billy Butler into the most doubleplays-- he hit into 32 twin killings in 2010, when he hit .318. Four guys hit into 31 DPs, including Matt Holliday and Jim Rice.

6) Another nominee for "Worst TV show ever": Marriage Boot Camp. Horrendous progam showcasing attention-starved couples getting in disputes of various kinds. I'd rather stare at color bars for an hour than watch another minute of that garbage.

5) Colorado Rockies DFA'd Jose Reyes yesterday, meaning they have ten days to trade him or else they can release him or send him to the minors, if he agrees to do that. Reyes will still get his $22M a year salary, but not sure a contender will want to pick him up-- there is no way a non-conender would pick him up, given domestic violence backlash involved. Hard to believe his career would end this way.

4) Chris Sale was 9-0, 1.58 in his first nine starts this year; he is 1-2, 6.75 in his last four. Why do players suddenly lose it or why do they suddenly regain their form?

3) WWE is returning to Las Vegas Sunday night for first time in eight years, at the new T-Mobile Arena just off the strip, kind of behind the New York-New York hotel.

2) Portland Trailblazers decided to fire their TV announcers this week, which makes me sad, since Mike Rice is one of my favorites. A former coach, Rice used to call Big West games on USA Network in the Tark the Shark glory years in the 80's-- his son Mike was the coach at Rutgers a few years ago. Rice was with the Trailblazers for 26 yeasrs and is immensely popular with Trailblazer fans.

1) Apparently they don't have public rest rooms in North Dakota.

Eagles' rookie QB Carson Wentz somehow got locked in a bathroom at a gas station in New Jersey on Wednesday; his rescue included garden shears.

If the Rams had drafted this guy, I'd probably be a little worried right now.

LEADING OFF: CC dominating for Yanks, Paxton piling up Ks
June 16, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

UNSTOPPABLE SABATHIA

Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia (4-4, 2.28 ERA) takes a 12-inning scoreless streak into a start against the Twins. The resurgent Sabathia has held opponents to two runs or fewer in six straight starts, and his ERA would be in baseball's top 15 if he had enough innings to qualify. It's a big turnaround for Sabathia, who struggled with problems on and off the field last season. ''Obviously, just staying healthy is the biggest thing,'' he said after his last start, a 4-0 win over Detroit.

KEEPING THE THRONE WARM

James Paxton (0-2, 2.25) has been outstanding while filling in for injured Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, a trend he'll try to keep up against the Rays. Paxton came up from Triple-A and struggled in his first start, but has been electric in his last two outings, allowing one earned run over 12 1/3 innings with 17 strikeouts and three walks. Of course, he's also gotten the same lackluster run support that's suppressed King Felix's win totals for years - Seattle lost Paxton's last two starts by scores of 3-1 and 2-1. He'll face another hard-throwing left-hander in rookie Blake Snell (0-0, 1.80).

SPEEDY RETURN

Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton is expected back from the 7-day concussion disabled list when the Reds face the Braves. Hamilton took his final tests Wednesday and the results were sent to the Reds' team doctor and Major League Baseball for clearance. ''What I do know is that he feels great,'' manager Bryan Price said before Hamilton took batting practice and caught fly balls in the outfield.

BACK TO START AGAIN

After opening the season in the bullpen, Royals lefty Danny Duffy (2-1, 2.94) has made a triumphant return to the rotation. In six starts, he's 2-1 with a 2.90 ERA, and Kansas City is 5-1 in those games. Last time out, Duffy struck out 10 White Sox over six innings in a 4-1 Royals victory.

WEST COAST DISTRACTIONS

The Nationals face San Diego and the Dodgers on the road over the next seven days, a journey that will test the team's focus. ''I've seen the West Coast destroy teams,'' manager Dusty Baker said. ''Everybody has friends, relatives, couple fleas, couple parasites. It's no joke, going to the coast.'' Tanner Roark (5-4, 2.93) pitches against the Padres to begin the trip.

Pirates, Mets close series
June 16, 2016

PITTSBURGH PIRATES (33-32) at NEW YORK METS (35-29)

First pitch: Thursday, 7:10 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Pittsburgh +117, New York -127, Total: 7.5

Pittsburgh comes to New York to play the rubber match of a three game set Thursday night.

The Mets are looking to build off of their 11-2 victory last night, and win the series versus the Pirates. New York got production up and down the lineup, as seven Mets had multi-hit nights. They did get bad news today, finding out that veteran 3B David Wright (.226, 7 HR, 14 RBI) will need to undergo surgery on his neck that will likely sideline him for the rest of the season.

Pittsburgh, on the other hand, is coming into the game on a cold streak. The team is 1-6 in its past seven games, though the one win came against the Mets in the first game of the series on Tuesday. Even though the Pirates are struggling as of late, they 13-5 versus the Mets over the past three seasons and 3-2 in this year’s season series.

Tonight’s pitching matchup will feature Pittsburgh’s RHP Juan Nicasio (5-5, 5.34 ERA, 60 K) versus New York’s 43-year old RHP Bartolo Colon (5-3, 3.08, 48 K). Its worth noting that over the last three starts for each pitcher, the games went UNDER with a combined record of 5-1.

Pittsburgh’s struggles of late have come from the team’s inability to hit. Over the last month, the Pirates are only hitting .219 as a team and are ranked 28th in runs-scored (48). The lack of hitting is hurting the team more than it might hurt other teams because hitting has been the aspect of the Pirates’ game that has been an asset all season. Even with this rough patch, over the entire season they are ninth in the league in runs-scored (306) and fifth in batting average as a team (.269).

The only hitter on the team that has consistently put up hits is OF Starling Marte (.332, 6 HR, 25 RBI), who is hitting .362 with two HRs and six RBIs this month. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Marte’s status is in question for the game tonight after leaving last night’s game with an eye injury.

Pittsburgh will hope to get production out of 3B David Freese (.298, 5 HR, 24 RBI), who has gone 2-for-3 against Colon in his career.

The Pirates’ starter tonight, Juan Nicasio, has been inconsistent all season. In his last three starts, he is 1-1 with a 4.59 ERA. Those statistics include his last outing, which was against the Mets where he pitched well, lasting five innings and only allowed one run. This game follows the trend of him pitching well against the Mets going 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA in his career. Nicasio was used in an unconventional way his last time on the mound because he came out of the bullpen in the 12th inning of a game where the starter only threw two innings and the entire bullpen had to be used. This experiment coming out of the bullpen didn’t go well; he allowed six runs on four hits and earned a loss in just one inning of work. Pittsburgh will hope that this one bad inning won’t hurt his confidence and carry over into tonight’s game.

The Mets will have Bartolo Colon on the mound tonight and he is on a roll as of late. Over his last three starts, he is 1-0 with a 2.00 ERA and the team has won two out of the three games. In fact, Colon has not allowed more than two runs in any of his starts since May 18th.

Bartolo has pitched well in his career against Pittsburgh, going 4-2 with a 1.88 ERA. His last start versus Pittsburgh was in August of last year and he earned a loss, but only gave up one run. The key for the Mets to win games is good pitching. Their entire staff has an impressive 3.12 ERA, which ranks 2nd in the league.

The Mets’ pitchers have had to do it all because they don’t get much run-support, having the 28th ranked offense in runs-scored (240). The Mets will look to CF Yoenis Cespedes (.286, 16 HR, 40 RBI) to have a big night, building off of his 3-for-4 night on Wednesday. They will also look to 3B Wilmer Flores (.250, 2 HR, 9 RBI) to stay hot since he has been hitting .375 with one HR and seven RBIs this month.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Cavaliers 115, Warriors 101-- First time since 1966 that a team down 3-1 in Finals forced a Game 7.

-- Last time a road team won Game 7 in NBA Fials; Washington Bullets at Seattle Supersonics, way back in 1978.

-- 12 different American Presidents have been in office since Vin Scully has been calling Dodger games.

-- Tigers 10, Royals 4-- Victor Martinez missed last three games with a bad knee, but hit three solo home runs in this game.

-- Whit Merrifield has scored in Royals' last ten home games.

-- A's AAA farm team in Nashville drew10,092 fans Thursday night; no way the A's drew that many fans for their listless loss to Texas Thursday afternoon. Announced crowd was 14,236, which is science fiction.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

13) 19 of Cleveland Cavaliers' last 21 games were decided by 11+ points.

12) LSU rookie Ben Simmons declined to work out for the 76ers? No idea what this means, but I doubt it is a positive sign. Maybe it is nothing, maybe he is angling to be a LA Laker, but red flags are increasingly popping up around the Australian rookie.

11) Bob Davidson has been a major league umpire for 30+ years and he isn't a crew chief? What does this say about him? Davidson did the plate in Cubs-Nationals game Wednesday; by end of the game, both sidies were livid with his ball/strike calls.

10) City of Philadelphia put a 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax on soda, making it the biggest city in America to do so (Berkeley had been). So my 20-ounce Cherry Coke goes up 30 cents a bottle, but God forbid someone on the Terror Watch List not be allowed to buy an assault weapon. Politicians are scum.

9) Oakland A's pulled a fast one on their competitors when they signed Yoenis Cespedes to a 4-year, $36M deal in 2012; they went 256-175 and made playoffs all three years Cespedes played for them. Since they traded him? 117-167.

8) Pittsburgh Pirates have had a brutal travel schedule the last couple weeks; they played at Citi Field last night and have a day game in Chicago today. This is wrong; if you have a day game, your getaway day game also should be a day game.

7) So I'm in a 16-team keeper fantasy league, four pickups a month, good league and highly competitive. I need another hitter and I'm listening to Mets' TV guys pumping up Wilmer Flores last night. I'm about to click on his page on my laptop, and Flores gets drilled on the hand by a pitch- he leaves the game. So much for that idea. .

6) Tampa Bay rookie pitcher Blake Snell is wearing #4, making him 4th big league pitcher this year to wear a single digit number.

5) With Florida AD Jeremy Foley retiring this week, you wonder if that played into Billy Donovan bolting Gainesville for the NBA last spring. If you're a college coach, you want to work for the AD that hired you. Makes life a lot easier.

4) Other than the Pittsburgh/San Francisco markets, Buffalo had highest TV ratings for the Stanley Cup Finals, amongst American markets.

3) Two groups have bid over $4B to buy UFC, thats how popular UFC is.

2) Playing football is difficult. Steelers' center Maurkice Pouncey had six operations and a skin graft, just last year.

1) Only nine golfers finished the first round of the US Open Thursday; if you like to watch golf on TV, today is your day.
