AP interview: Rose addresses on Ichiro's milestone
June 18, 2016

HOUSTON (AP) Pete Rose has plenty of respect for Ichiro Suzuki.

He simply doesn't understand why Ichiro's professional hits in Japan count toward his hit total if Rose's minor league knocks aren't considered part of his number.

Ichiro was honored this week when he reached 4,257 hits between the Japanese and North American major leagues, surpassing Rose's total from Major League Baseball. Rose is the all-time MLB hits leader with 4,256.

''If you're talking about professional hits, I've got 4,683 of them,'' Rose told The Associated Press on Friday night, adding his minor league total to his MLB record. ''Because I believe a professional hit, and I'm not talking about Ichiro now, but I think a professional hit is when you get paid to play ball and you get hits. I played two years and two months in the minor leagues, and so I've got a lot more professional hits than anybody.''

Ichiro added a hit on Friday night to give him 2,980 hits in MLB to go along with the 1,278 he accumulated for Orix in the Pacific League in Japan from 1992-2000.

When asked about Ichiro recently. Rose was quoted by USA Today as saying: ''the next thing you know, they'll be counting his high school hits.''

But Rose denied saying that on Friday.

''I didn't say the high school hits thing,'' he said. ''I would never say the high school hits thing because I've got high school hits, too. That's not any part of the discussion.

''The only thing I ever said is I don't understand why they want to count his professional hits and not my professional hits and it's only fair to say that.''

While irked that some believe Ichiro has more hits than him, he still raved about the Marlins' star overall.

''Ichiro's a Hall of Fame player, there's no question about it,'' said Rose, who is ineligible for the Hall of Fame over his admitted gambling on baseball. ''Of course, when you get 3,000 hits, which he'll get in the next couple of weeks, that's the ticket to Cooperstown. He's had a great career. He probably will go in our Hall of Fame, no question about it and he'll probably go in the Japanese Hall of Fame.''

The 75-year-old Rose said he'll applaud Ichiro when he reaches 3,000 hits, but he couldn't help but throw in his hit total one last time.

''Absolutely because he'll be the 30th guy to get 3,000. There's been two get 4,000 and I'm the only one you're going to talk to at the present time because the other one is Ty Cobb,'' Rose said with a smile and a chuckle.

-- Patricia Ford was named Miss Georgia; she is a former Weather Channel intern.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there

13) First of all, Happy Father's Day to all the dads reading this; I was lucky to have a great dad. He passed away last year and I miss him very much, so if your dad is still alive, give him a hug and tell him you love him.

12) Get well soon to Michael Lee Aday, aka Meat Loaf; the 68-year old singer collapsed during a show in Edmonton this week. He was released from the hospital and is said to be in good condition now, which is very good news.

11) I'm watching NFL Network the other day and a guy is trying to make a big deal out of the fact that the Rams haven't named Jared Goff the #1 QB yet. Oy. It is really hard to be an NFL quarterback; rushing someone into starting can be very stupid.

10) Here are the Rams' first four games:
@ 49ers, Seahawks, @ Buccaneers, @ Cardinals.

Three road games, three division games. I'm a big fan of easing a guy into being the QB of the future, especially with the Cal offense being lot different than an NFL offense.

9) Kurt Warner started nine games for '04 Giants, before prize rookie Eli Manning took over. Giants went 1-7 in Manning starts, scoring 37 points in his first four starts; he was 6-21 in one start, 4-18 in another. Eli has turned out pretty well, but make no mistake about it, he was terrible in his rookie season.

Steve McNair started six games his first two years with Tennessee; he turned out to be a pretty good QB, too. Goff will be fine, but it will take time.

8) Brewers-Dodgers game last night was only second game in majors this year where both teams scored in each of the first three innings of the game. Red Sox-Orioles game on June 1 was the first game like that this season.

7) Wally Szczerbiak, who is a pretty good basketball analyst these days, predicted that there might not be anyone in this draft class who becomes an NBA All-Star.

6) Then there are mock drafts, which are fine if you do one; but once you start having new ones every other day, then you're just screwing around trying to get page views. Anyone can shuffle the top 15 names around; lets stick to one mock per analyst.

5) There was something on Twitter about the Warriors flying home after Game 6 and three of their guys are doing homework from online classes, trying to earn their college degrees. Pretty cool that really rich guys still want their degree.

4) One of the highlights this weekend was in San Diego, wehre they showed a guy playing ping pong outdoors, while wearing stilts. Don't see that every day.

3) If you owned one of the top five picks in the NBA Draft, would you trade it to the Lakers for D'Angelo Russell, after Russell's display of immaturity last year? I'd have to say no; you can't make mistakes when you have a top five pick.

2) Clipper coach Doc Rivers has quietly dumped two of his assistant coaches already; when you spend a ton of money on a team and it underachieves, heads will roll.

1) A person paid $99,000 for two tickets to tonight's Game 7 in Oakland. Wow.

LEADING OFF: Machado starts suspension, deGrom-Teheran duel
June 19, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

ON THE BENCH IN BIRDLAND

Orioles infielder Manny Machado will begin to serve a four-game suspension for charging the mound and punching Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura on June 7. Machado dropped his appeal of the penalty Saturday after getting three hits against Toronto. ''Let's just get this past us already and keep playing baseball,'' he said.

The two-time All-Star is batting .317 with 17 homers and 42 RBIs. The suspension will end his streak of 229 consecutive starts, the longest current string in the majors.

SUPPORT NEEDED

Jacob deGrom (3-3, 2.82) and Julio Teheran (2-7, 2.93) match up in a duel of pitchers with sub-three ERAs who lack winning records. DeGrom hasn't won for the Mets since April 30, a span of eight starts, despite posting a 3.47 ERA in that time. Meanwhile, the Braves have averaged 2.21 runs in Teheran's starts, second worst in the majors behind Houston's Dallas Keuchel entering Saturday.

PRICE FALLING

Red Sox left-hander David Price (7-4, 4.52) looks to snap a personal three-game losing streak in the finale against the Mariners. Price has been a hard-luck loser of late - Boston leads the majors in runs but has just five combined over Price's past three starts. Right-hander Taijuan Walker (3-6, 3.69) is slated to go for the Mariners after leaving his start Tuesday against Tampa Bay in the fourth inning with a foot injury.

GOOD AS GOLD

Paul Goldschmidt takes a 12-game hitting streak into a matinee against the Phillies. The Diamondbacks first baseman has lifted his batting average from .260 to .290 during the streak and has also homered in consecutive games.

REAL GOOD ROOKIE

After taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his second major league start, Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon (1-0, 1.93) faces one of the National League's best lineups in the Cubs. Taillon finished with eight innings of two-hit ball last time out against the Mets, and now gets first-place Chicago on a national broadcast. The Cubs will send out right-hander Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 3.05) against struggling Pittsburgh.

NL Value Starters
June 18, 2016

There are several months to go but it is easy to be excited about the National League playoffs given how stacked the league is with power arms and elite starting pitching.

The American League All Star team will have an unenviable task next month as Terry Collins will be able to trot out a truly elite starter in every inning if he wants to.

As the separation grows between the contenders and the rest of the league the cost to support the elite starters on quality teams will continue to grow.

Ultimately identifying quality starters at lower price points will be the key to having success in the National League given how steep the prices will be on the starters for the Cubs, Nationals, Giants, and Mets, as well obviously Clayton Kershaw.

There are several National League starters that project a few tiers down that still can offer some promising potential on many nights while falling in line at costs that are much easier to stomach in most matchups.

Here are a handful of possible value starters in the NL for the coming weeks.

Jerad Eickhoff (Philadelphia Phillies): Aaron Nola was the dominant starter for the Phillies in the first two months of the season and remains the highest priced starter in that rotation. It was Eickhoff that wowed in eight starts last season however and after some ups-and-downs in April he is starting to put it together again in 2016. Eickhoff is almost 26 and he won’t be on a sharp innings watch like Nola or Vincent Velasquez in the Phillies rotation and he has allowed three or fewer runs in seven of his last eight starts. Eickhoff owns a better than 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and despite his 4-8 record he has picked up a win in three of his last five starts after starting the season 1-6. His ERA is just 3.40 with a FIP that is only slightly higher and his walks and home runs allowed have been kept in check of late. With a limited offense the Phillies are sometimes tough to support but the team has still won 30 games with similar home and road results and Eickhoff might be the best pitcher to support for the Phillies with the ‘under’ also looking playable in many of his upcoming starts.

Michael Wacha (St. Louis Cardinals): Wacha looked like he was on the superstar fast track starring for the Cardinals late in the 2013 season and in the playoffs. Injuries derailed him in 2014 but he had a fine 2015 season for the 100-win Cardinals. Wacha has already taken as many losses as he did last season at 2-7 but his FIP is 3.51, significantly lower than his season FIP was in 2015 when he wound up 17-7 with a 3.38 ERA. The Cardinals had a slow start to the season but the team is rounding back into form and while catching the Cubs might be a challenge in the NL Central this certainly looks like a team poised to claim a wild card spot. Wacha’s marginal numbers will lead to reasonable pricing to support him even though he is still capable of a dominant outing. The schedule has worked against Wacha as since mid-May his starts have come against the Rockies, Cubs, Nationals, Giants, Pirates, and Rangers, taking on some of baseball’s best offensive teams. Even so he has a quality start in three of his last four outings and he offers great promise the rest of the season at discounted pricing compared to the lines he drew last season.

Bartolo Colon (New York Mets): Backing Noah Syndergaard or Steven Matz is certainly more comforting but Colon’s prices are sharply discounted on the following nights for the Mets. The 43-year old is occasionally the butt of jokes but there is nothing funny about the success he is having against NL hitters. Colon has delivered five consecutive starts with two or fewer runs allowed and his ERA is down to just 3.01. He owns a better than 4:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and while he gives up a lot of hits, he usually escapes with limited damage and he has only allowed two home runs over his last six starts. The Mets are 8-4 in his last 12 starts and with New York possessing an unreliable offense Colon can be supported at a much more reasonable price than the rest of the rotation, avoiding the risk of laying -200 or greater behind an offense that is often sweating out one-run games.

Jake Peavy (San Francisco Giants):
While it seems like Jake Peavy has been around forever he is only freshly 35 and could have a few solid years remaining in his career. Peavy is 3-6 with a 5.83 ERA but after a rocky start to the season he has been pretty reliable in recent weeks. His season FIP is a much more respectable 4.16 and his ERA is only 1.82 over his last four starts. Peavy is still getting nearly seven strikeouts per nine innings and after allowing six home runs in his first six starts of the season he has allowed just two in his last seven starts. Everyone would prefer to support Madison Bumgarner or Johnny Cueto but Peavy might be the value option to support a Giants squad that scores nearly 4.5 runs per game despite playing in a pitching-friendly ballpark, while also playing strong defense and generally looking like one of the best teams in baseball.

Zach Davies (Milwaukee Brewers): Davies hasn’t been considered a high ceiling prospect and with his small frame he was only a 26th round draft pick by the Orioles in 2011. Davies is only 23 however and after a shaky April he has emerged as a reliable option in the Milwaukee rotation. Davies has a K/9 of 8.3 over the last month while turning in four straight quality starts. Davies has actually allowed six or fewer hits in 10 consecutive starts and while he has been a little fortunate with a low .262 BABIP on the season his command has been strong with a low walk rate. Davies seems to have solved Miller Park which typically is a tough venue for pitchers as he owns a 2.88 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in eight home starts with the Brewers winning five of those games. While Milwaukee isn’t likely to be a playoff contender the Brewers have a winning home record and Milwaukee has played above .500 ball since the calendar turned to May as this has been a competitive team that is still frequently getting solid underdog pricing.

Lincecum wins in return, Angels top A's
June 18, 2016

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The uniform is different. The flowing locks of shaggy brown hair that once protruded from his cap are gone. He's lost a little zip off his fastball, too.

Even so, ''The Freak'' came back as a force.

Tim Lincecum made a winning return to the majors, restarting his career after nearly a year away with six sharp innings and several ovations to lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Oakland Athletics 7-1 Saturday.

''It just kind of felt like riding a bike again,'' Lincecum said. ''After that first inning, everything kind of went away and I could just get back to work and making my pitches.''

Sporting a bright red hat and Angels jersey that was in stark contrast to the black and orange he wore across the Bay Bridge for nine seasons with the San Francisco Giants, Lincecum gave up one run and four hits.

The four-time All-Star struck out two and walked two before leaving to a raucous ovation from the crowd of 25,078.

The 32-year-old righty hadn't pitched in the majors since last June 27. He had hip surgery in September, signed with the Angels in May and made three starts in the minors.

Lincecum didn't quite have the blazing fastball that he used to win back-to-back NL Cy Young Awards, but he was still strong in his debut with Los Angeles.

''It felt like my mechanics were a little erratic,'' Lincecum said. ''Got into some deep counts but I made pitches when I needed to and my defense made plays when we needed them to. Definitely an area when I can improve on, but happy with it.''

Lincecum retired seven straight during one stretch and got A's slugger Khris Davis to ground into a double play after walking the leadoff batter in the fifth.

''He pitched backwards,'' Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. ''He threw fastballs in breaking ball counts and breaking balls in fastball counts. We couldn't solve him.''

Mike Trout homered, doubled and drove in three runs for the Angels. Johnny Giovatella also homered to help Los Angeles to its third win in four games.

The Angels batted around and scored five times in the sixth. Ryan Dull (1-2) lost in relief.

Lincecum was followed by television cameras and received a standing ovation from fans of both teams - and a few wearing Giants No. 55 jerseys - as he walked to the bullpen for his pregame warmups.

A second, louder ovation greeted Lincecum when he took the mound.

''It was pretty incredible, I wasn't expecting that,'' Lincecum said. ''It's nice being here close to where I started and having my Bay Area fans here. Definitely made it feel like a home game to me.''

Lincecum breezed through the first two innings, then struggled with his command in the third when Danny Valencia's two-out, broken-bat single on a 3-0 pitch drove in Billy Burns.

That was about the only blemish on Lincecum's day.

After getting Davis to hit into the double play in the sixth, Lincecum retired Jed Lowrie on a fly ball to end his afternoon.

Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia stood on the top steps of the dugout and greeted Lincecum with a handshake as he came off the field to another big cheer.

''His command got a little fuzzy in the sixth ... but after the first couple of pitches you could see his stuff was there,'' Scioscia said. ''When he needed to get into the zone, he did.''

Trout hit his tying home run leading off fourth to chase A's starter Andrew Triggs. Two batters later, Giavotella followed with another solo shot that hit off the left field foul pole.

Triggs, who was called up from Triple-A Nashville before the game, allowed three hits with one strikeout in his first major league start.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Angels: OF Todd Cunningham was designated for assignment. ... C Geovanny Soto (right lateral meniscus) was scheduled to take batting practice before the game and could begin a rehab assignment in the minors next week.

Athletics: Righty reliever Liam Hendriks (triceps strain) is expected to come off the disabled list soon. ... INF Tyler Ladendorf was optioned to Triple-A Nashville.

UP NEXT

Angels: RHP Jered Weaver (5-6) starts Sunday at the Coliseum. Weaver hasn't made it past the sixth inning in his last four outings and is 1-3 during that stretch.

Athletics: LHP Eric Surkamp (0-4) pitches the series finale for Oakland. His 8.07 ERA is the highest in the AL and third-highest in the majors among pitchers with 25 innings or more.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- USGA embarrassed himself for the way it handled the Dustin Johnson thing; he should've been told, one way or the other, what was going to happen.

-- Seriously, how do you watch a sporting event for two hours without being sure of the score? PGA Tour players ripped the USGA on Twitter.

-- Lee Westwood is a good guy; he had a lousy day himself, but shook Johnson's hands on the fairway after Johnson stuck his last approach shot on 18.

-- Does Joe Buck have to work every event on FOX? He is really good on baseball, and really average at the other stuff.

-- Curtis Granderson has 13 homers, 21 RBI this year. Hard to do that.

-- The guy who won the Nathan's hot dog contest LY ate 62 weiners in 10:00; he weighs 130 pounds. That makes no sense.

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Our first dose of college football knowledge......

Today we start our summer review of college football teams, looking at the Big 14:

Illinois-- Last winning season was 2011; they hired Lovie Smith as head coach and he hasn't been a college head coach before. Illini is 4-13 as a road dog the last four years.

Indiana-- Hoosiers are 9-16 as a road underdog since 2010; in their last three bowls, they gave up 45-49-44 points- they didn't win any of those games.

Iowa-- Over last four years, Hawkeyes are 8-17 as home favorites, 9-0 as favorites on the road. Lost last four bowl games by an average score of 36-18.

Michigan-- Favorites are 4-0-1 vs spread in Wolverines' last five bowls; Michigan is 3-8 vs spread as a road underdog the last four years.

Michigan State-- Spartans are an amazing +46 in turnovers the last three years; they lost their bowl game 38-0 to Alabama LY, after winning their previous four bowls by a combined total of nine points.

Minnesota-- Golden Gophers have been a good spread team in conference; they're 8-3 as a road underdog the last three years, 10-6 as a home favorite the last four years.

Nebraska-- Cornhuskers are 34-19 the last four years (20-13 in league), despite a -37 turnover ratio. Huskers are 7-12 as home favorites the last three years.

Northwestern-- Last three years, Wildcats are 2-10 vs spread coming off a loss- they are 19-9 as a road underdog since '08. Northwestern is 2-10 all-time in bowls. .

Ohio State-- Buckeyes are 15-6 vs spread away from Columbus under Urban Meyer. Ohio State scored 35-42-42-44 points in last four bowl/playoff games.

Penn State-- Nittany Lions are 0-8 vs spread on road, 2-2 on neutral fields in James Franklin era. PSU lost three of last four bowls; was underdog in last five.

Purdue-- Since 2008, Boilermakers are 9-19 vs spread off a win; they're 7-2 as a road underdog last two years. Purdue is 6-30 last three years; their last bowl was in '12.

Rutgers-- Over last decade, Scarlet Knights are 22-13 as road underdogs- they're 4-12 SU in Big 14 games since joining league- they allowed 46+ points in four of their last six games last year. .

Wisconsin-- In 2010-11, Badgers went 22-5 with a +30 turnover ratio. In four years since, Wisconsin is 38-16, but with a turnover ratio of -2. Badgers haven't been a home underdog since 2010.
