Tuesday's MLB Game of the Day: Orioles at Red Sox
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both clubs squandered an opportunity to enter the series with the division lead when the Orioles fell at Toronto on Sunday and the Red Sox lost in Minnesota.

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox (A: +155, H: -175, Total: 8.5)

The Boston Red Sox and the visiting Baltimore Orioles will battle for three games with first place in the American League East on the line beginning on Tuesday at Fenway Park. Both clubs squandered an opportunity to enter the series with the lead when the Orioles fell at Toronto on Sunday and the Red Sox lost in Minnesota.

The two clubs got a day off on Monday to contemplate their respective crushing defeats, with Boston going down on a walk-off home run in the 10th inning and the Orioles leaving the tying run at third base in a 10-9 setback to the Blue Jays. The setback was the third straight for Baltimore, which allowed 30 runs in the four-game series at Toronto. The Orioles gave up a total of 29 runs in a four-game series at home against Boston bridging May and June but managed to slug their way to a pair of wins and take a 4-3 lead in the season series. The Red Sox are just 4-4 since leaving that series in Baltimore and are opening a 10-game homestand on Tuesday that includes visits from the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago White Sox.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN 2 (Baltimore), NESN (Boston)

INJURY REPORT:

Orioles - RP D. O'Day (15-Day DL, hamstring), 3B Manny Machado (Questionable Tuesday, suspension appeal).

Red Sox - C B. Swihart (15-Day DL, ankle), C R. Hanigan (15-Day DL, neck), LF B. Holt (15-Day DL, concussion).

WEATHER REPORT: It is going to be a perfect day for baseball at Boston's historic Fenway Park on Tuesday night. Temperatures will be in the mid-70's, skies will be clear, humidity will be low, and there will be a light 5 mph breeze blowing in from the Green Monster in left field. Perfect day to hit up the Cask 'n Flagon after work and make your way over to the stadium for game-time.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Chris Tillman (8-1, 3.01 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH David Price (7-3, 4.63)

Tillman bounced back from one of his worst starts of the season with one of his best on Wednesday against Kansas City, striking out nine without issuing a walk in 7 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. The 28-year-old allowed three home runs in each of his previous two starts but surrendered just one extra-base hit – a double – against the Royals. Tillman missed Boston the first two times around this season but is 9-3 with a 2.84 ERA in 18 career starts against the Red Sox.

Price is looking much more like the ace Boston paid him to be over the last month with a string of six straight quality starts. The former No. 1 overall draft pick was a tough-luck loser in San Francisco on Wednesday, when he was reached for two runs on three hits – two solo home runs – over eight innings in a game the Red Sox went on to lose 2-1. Price was knocked around for five runs in as many innings against Baltimore on April 11 and is 8-4 with a 2.90 ERA in 20 career starts against the Orioles.

TRENDS:

* Orioles are 14-3 in Tillman's last 17 starts.
* Red Sox are 1-4 in their last 5 vs. American League East.
* Over is 6-1 in Orioles last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
* Over is 6-0-1 in Red Sox last 7 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
* Orioles are 12-2 in Tillman's last 14 starts vs. Red Sox.

CONSENSUS: The Red Sox are picking up 64 percent of the wagers while Over 8.5 is grabbing 67 percent of the totals plays.

Nationals, Cubs hook up
June 14, 2016

CHICAGO CUBS (43-19) at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (40-24)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Chicago -115, Washington +105, Total: 7.0

The Nationals will be looking to win their fifth straight game when they host the Cubs on Tuesday.

The Cubs and Nationals played the first of a three-game set on Monday and Washington won that game 4-1. The team racked up 10 hits in the game, but Chicago was only able to get two hits in the contest. That was mostly because of the impressive pitching of Max Scherzer. He struck out 11 batters in the game and allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work.

The starters in this game won’t be quite as fun to watch, as RHP John Lackey (7-2, 2.63 ERA, 84 K) will be on the mound for the Cubs and LHP Gio Gonzalez (3-5, 3.93 ERA, 71 K) will be going up against him for the Nationals.

Chicago is 4-1 against Washington this season, but the team is just 4-4 against the Nationals when playing at Nationals Park. One thing favoring the Cubs is that they are an impressive 25-11 against the money line on the road with a money line of -100 to -125 over the past two seasons. Chicago is, however, 3-14 against the money line in road games after giving up one or less earned runs in his last outing over the past three seasons.

The Cubs have been one of the most dominant teams in baseball this season, but they are down in this series and will be looking to even it up on Tuesday. John Lackey will be the guy tasked with getting Chicago a victory in this one and he has been excellent recently. Lackey has not allowed a run in his past 13.2 innings on the mound and he has also allowed just one earned run over his past 20.2 innings. He has struck out 8.5 batters per game over the past two contests and should be feeling really confident coming into this one. It also doesn’t hurt that he already has one good start against the Nationals under his belt this season, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings against Washington on May 6.

One guy to keep an eye on in this game for Chicago is OF Dexter Fowler (.289, 7 HR, 28 RBI). Fowler is 8-for-17 with a homer and three RBI against Gio Gonzalez in his career and should be able to find some success against him on Tuesday. It’d be big if he could get on base in this game.

3B Kris Bryant (.277, 15 HR, 45 RBI) could also have a big game in store in this one. He is 2-for-5 with a homer and a walk against Gonzalez in his career. He has gone hitless in his past two games, so this matchup could be exactly what he needs to get back on track.

The Nationals have been on fire recently and they can guarantee themselves a series win with a victory over the Cubs on Tuesday. Gio Gonzalez is the guy that will take the ball for them and he’ll need to be sharp in this one. He struggled badly against Chicago in his last matchup with the team, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. That type of performance will put way too much pressure on the Nationals’ hitters, so he’ll need to find a way to put in a quality start on Tuesday.

Offensively, Jayson Werth (.246, 10 HR, 35 RBI) could be in for a big game. He is on a six-game hitting streak for Washington and also happens to be 7-for-17 with a homer, four doubles and three RBI against Lackey in his career. It’d be big if he can drive in some runs in this one. OF Bryce Harper (.256, 13 HR, 38 RBI) will, however, need to come through in this one as well. He is 0-for-7 against Lackey in his career and needs to find a way to figure him out on Tuesday.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- NFL teams were 45-94 (47.9%) on 2-point conversions last year.

-- Steelers were 8-11 on 2-point triee; no one else tried more than six times.

-- Four teams (Jets-Eagles-Patriots-Panthers) didn't try a 2-point conversion, but I don't think fake PATs count in this-- the Eagles did that now and then. .

-- Texas Rangers put Yu Darvish on DL with shoulder issues.

-- Dodgers' P Kenta Maeda left Tuesday's game after he was hit hard on the leg by a line drive hit by Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt.

-- Major league hitters have a .175 average after a 1-2 count, .243 after a 2-1 count, making the 1-1 pitch a pivotal pitch in many at-bats.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) Miami Marlins' TV people have to stop with the Ichiro/Pete Rose stuff. Hits he got in the Japanese League are not close to the same as hits in the major leagues.

Ichiro Suzuki is a great baseball player, a first ballot Hall of Famer, but to say he has as many hits at Rose is misleading. Its like including hits in the minor leagues.

12) Jeremy Foley retired this week as AD at Florida, after 25 years; he hired Urban Meyer and Billy Donovan, oversaw a great period of success in Florida athletics.

Not great for basketball coach Michael White; you don't want the guy who hired you to leave, but White's father is the AD at Duke and he has a brother who is an AD, so he is connected enough to have a good career no matter what.

11) Kid on Miami, Fla's baseball team openly taunted his opponents after hitting a homer against Boston College Sunday, almost starting a fracas. Someone better tell this young man that if he doesn't tone his act down, someone in pro baseball is going to plant a 95 mph fastball in his ear. Maybe more than one.

10) Pretty cool Sunday when a freshman pinch-hitter on Cal-Santa Barbara comes off the bench and hits a walk-off grand slam to send the Gauchos to their first-ever College World Series. UCSB doesn't even have lights on its baseball field- they were the third place team in the Big West, but now they're heading to Omaha.

9) I was watching movies the other night and I'm thinking; which actor died the most times in his acting career? Does anyone keep track of this stuff?

So I look it up on the Interweb; an actor named John Hurt died in either 40 or 45 movies, depending on which website you believe. Vincent Price died 33 times, before he became the Egghead in the old Batman TV series.

8) The 8th hole at Oakmont this week is a 288-yard par -3. Oy.

7) Golden State Warriors are +153 when Draymond Green has been on the floor, -30 when he has been out of the game. Green will be back Thursday.

6) 8 of the 26 basketball teams in SEC/Pac-12 are off to Europe for summer trips; Oregon-UCLA-Washington-Washington State and Arkansas-Georgia-Mississippi State-Missouri. Those trips are generally good for a team, unless your best player gets hurt and is out for the year, like what happened to USC a few years ago.

5) In his 18 years in the NBA, John Stockton missed a total of 22 games.

4) Odd fact: Kobe Bryant's grandparents once bought a house from Muhammad Ali

3) James Shields is 34 years old and is struggling badly; in his last three starts, one for San Diego and two for the White Sox, he's allowed 24 runs in 9.2 IP. No bueno.

2) Before Brandon Finnegan lost 1-0 at Dodger Stadium May 23, the Reds had not had a complete game pitched by a lefty starter since 2001.

1) 20 years ago I coached Little League, which was interesting, in both good and bad ways. We had a pretty good team; one night, we're beating this team and their 3B had a rough night, made a couple errors and his coach is ragging on him pretty good.

I'm standing right there listening to this; the coach's son is pitching and the coach isn't happy. He lets loose on the third baseman one more time and then, finally, the kid looks at him and says: "Hey!!! You're the one who put me here!!!!"

That put an end to that.

Tampa Bay is still sitting in last place of the AL East, but the Rays are heating up at the right time. The Rays rallied from a 5-2 deficit to stun the Mariners on Tuesday, 8-7 to win for the fourth time in the last five games. During their current 8-2 run, Tampa Bay’s offense has picked things up by scoring at least five runs in six of those victories. Drew Smyly takes the mound tonight for the Rays as they continue their series with Seattle, as the southpaw has struggled of late by allowing 17 earned runs in his last three starts and owning a 2-7 record.

Coldest team: Phillies (4-14 last 18)
Philadelphia pulled out an impressive 7-0 shutout of Toronto on Monday night as a heavy underdog, but were knocked out early in Tuesday’s 11-3 drubbing by the Blue Jays. The Phillies started the season with a slither of hope after sitting with a 22-15 mark on May 14. Since then, Philadelphia has gone backwards by losing 20 of its past 28 games, including 11 defeats to the Cubs and Nationals in this span. The Phillies return home for six games, as they continue their series with the Blue Jays tonight. Jeremy Hellickson is winless in his past four trips to the mound for Philadelphia, while allowing three home runs in his last outing at Washington.

Hottest pitcher: Stephen Strasburg, Nationals (10-0, 3.03 ERA)
The NL Cy Young race continues to remain tight with a handful of names lobbying for the award. Only one of these aces is undefeated so far as Strasburg is up to double-digit victories for the fourth time in his career. The Cubs and Nationals have split the first two games of their series in D.C., as Washington owns a perfect 7-0 record in Strasburg’s seven home starts. Strasburg has struck out at least 10 batters in four of his past five trips to the mound, but has given up seven earned runs in his last two starts against the Phillies and Reds.

Coldest pitcher: Sonny Gray, Athletics (3-6, 5.34 ERA)
Oakland won the first four meetings against Texas before falling to the Rangers last night, 10-6. In none of those matchups has Gray taken the mound against the defending AL West champions, as the Oakland right-hander is coming off a pair of solid performances in losses. The Athletics own a 1-6 record in Gray’s last seven starts, in spite of allowing three earned runs in 12.2 innings of work in setbacks to the Astros and Reds. Gray beat the Rangers in three of four meetings last season, while allowing two earned runs in two home victories against Texas.

Biggest UNDER run:
Astros (7-0 last seven)
Although Houston is 3-5 on its current road trip, the Astros have seen the ‘under’ cash in each of the past seven contests. For the exception of getting shut out on Sunday at Tampa Bay, the Astros have scored at least three runs in six of the past seven contests with three games finished with 4-3 scores. In Tuesday’s victory at St. Louis, the Astros allowed a pair of solo home runs in a 5-2 triumph to end the Cardinals’ five-game winning streak. Collin McHugh takes the ball for the Astros tonight, hitting the ‘over’ in four of six road starts, while giving up eight earned runs in previous two outings.

Biggest OVER run:
Twins (9-0-1 last 10)
Minnesota may own the worst record in the American League, but the Twins have been involved in plenty of exciting games recently. The Twins dropped a 5-4 decision to the Angels on Tuesday to hit the ‘over’ for the ninth time in 10 games, while allowing at least four runs in 14 consecutive games. Tyler Duffey has been rocked recently for Minnesota, giving up at least five earned runs in four of his past five trips to the mound, resulting in a 4-0-1 mark to the ‘over.’

Matchup to watch
: Indians vs. Royals
Last week, Kansas City was mired in an eight-game losing streak, but that has disappeared as the Royals have suddenly won four consecutive contests. The Royals rallied past the Indians last night, 3-2 with a late two-run homer by Salvador Perez to win their eighth straight home game. Both games in this series have finished ‘under’ the total as the Indians have scored three runs or less in five games on their current road trip. Former Cy Young winner Corey Kluber has pitched well recently by winning four of his last five starts for Cleveland, including tossing six shutout innings in a 7-0 victory over Kansas City on June 5.

Betcha didn’t know: The Tigers and White Sox have combined for 38 runs in the first two games of their series as Detroit held off Chicago on Tuesday, 11-8. Chris Sale owns a 2.87 ERA for Chicago, but the White Sox have finished ‘over’ the total in eight of his last nine starts, including a 7-4 loss at Detroit on June 4.

Biggest public favorite: Giants (-210) vs. Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Twins (+110) at Angels

Biggest line move: Astros (+130 to +110) at Cardinals

LEADING OFF: Hammel vs Strasburg in DC, Kershaw in control
June 15, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

WINNERS ALL AROUND

Two impressive winning streaks are on the line in the Cubs-Nationals series finale. Chicago starter Jason Hammel (7-2, 2.36 ERA) is 9-0 with a 3.16 ERA in 12 career starts against the Nationals. He'll oppose Stephen Strasburg (10-0, 3.03), who has won 13 straight decisions dating back to last season. Strasburg hasn't faced the Cubs since August 2013.

IN THE ZONE

Clayton Kershaw (9-1, 1.52) tries to keep up his dominant recent run when the Dodgers face the Diamondbacks. Kershaw has a 20.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio this year, and if he finished the season at that clip, it would be the second-best ever - behind Lady Baldwin's 21.0 in 1884. The best K/BB ratio since 1884 was posted by Phil Hughes, who had an 11.6 mark in 2014.

TOUGH BREW

Former Brewers nemesis Johnny Cueto (9-1, 2.16) tries again for his 10th victory and his eighth straight winning start against Milwaukee when the Giants conclude their homestand. Cueto, who pitched previously in the NL Central for the Cincinnati Reds, is 10-3 with a 2.79 ERA in 19 career starts vs. the Brewers.

FRIENDS, ENEMIES

Yankees manager Joe Girardi and Rockies skipper Walt Weiss are longtime friends facing each other for two games. New York selected Weiss' son, Bo, in the 29th round of the draft last week. ''It's crazy,'' Walt Weiss said. The younger Weiss committed to pitch for North Carolina but could sign with the Yankees.

SECOND START FOR DESCLAFANI

Reds right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (0-0, 1.50) will make his second start of the season and his third career start against the Braves. DeSclafani began the season on the disabled list with a strained left oblique. He came off the DL on Friday and allowed eight hits and one run while getting a no decision in a 2-1 win over Oakland. DeSclafani is 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts against Atlanta, both in 2015.

BANGED UP

The Phillies hope to get third baseman Maikel Franco back when they face Toronto. Franco has a sprained right knee and has missed two games after landing awkwardly trying to tag a runner Sunday. Franco is hitting .252 with 11 homers this season
