MLB betting cheat sheet: Flying High

Baltimore has won five straight, but this weekend might be a good time to “sell high” on the Birds.

Power Sports breaks down all the best MLB betting notes and odds for this weekend's series in our MLB betting cheat sheet, including whether to buy or sell the hot Orioles.

Flying High

I often like to start this bi-weekly column by pointing out who is the current “hottest” team. On Monday, it was Cleveland, but they cooled down a bit, only splitting four games with Seattle. Now the honor is bestowed upon Baltimore, who has won five straight. Though they took the series opener Thursday night in Toronto, I still believe this weekend might be a good time to “sell high” on the Birds. This is because no team in all of baseball has played fewer road games than the Orioles’ (24) and they’re only .500 away from Camden Yards. The Blue Jay have been a bit “unlucky” this year as they have the most one-run losses in the American League (12) and are just 2-5 in games that have gone to extra innings.

Something’s Gotta Give

Over Memorial Day Weekend, the Royals swept a three-game series from the White Sox. That’s part of a much larger “downward spiral” for the team from the Southside of Chicago, who has now lost 18 of 24 overall. But the Kansas City team they’ll welcome in this weekend is in no better shape, having been swept in back to back series (by Cleveland and Baltimore) and losing seven in a row overall. Despite still being a game over .500, the Royals have actually been outscored by 24 runs this year. Even worse news for KC is that an offense which has scored 1 or 0 runs in six straight games will have to face Chris Sale in Friday’s series opener. Might this be the spot that Sale and the White Sox get back on track?

Two Outta Three Ain’t Bad

The Rockies and Padres meet for the fourth time this season, in Coors Field. In each of the three previous series, San Diego has taken two out of the three games. But, overall, Colorado has had the better season when you look at the respective run differentials. The Rockies have only been outscored by eight runs over the course of the season while the Padres are -47 (sixth worst in all of baseball). I wouldn’t be surprised to see the home team win this weekend series.

Pitching Notes

* The Nationals had been 11-0 in Stephen Strasburg starts this year before taking a surprising 6-3 loss at Cincinnati last Saturday. Strasburg himself did not factor into the decision, though he was charged with three runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched (did have 10 K’s). He’s a good bet to bounce back Friday at home vs. Philadelphia, whom he’s somehow yet to face in 2016. These two NL East rivals have played three series against one another with the road team coming out on top in eight of the nine games. The Phillies actually swept a three-game series here in D.C. back in April. But they’ve lost 10 of their last 13 overall and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were swept this weekend.

* The Indians Corey Kluber is fifth in the American League in WHIP (1.079) despite a 5-7 team start record. This isn’t the first time this year that I’ve made the case that you can start to look for better results from him and finally we’re starting to see some real signs. Last time out, the former Cy Young winner delivered six scoreless innings of two-hit ball against the Royals. On Friday, he faces an Angels club on a four-game losing streak that’s starting a pitcher (Hector Santiago) who has a 9.69 ERA and 1.692 WHIP his last three starts.

Hitting Notes

* Look out for San Diego’s Wil Myers. He just hit five home runs during the team’s eight-game home stand and now heads to the most hitter-friendly park in all of baseball (Coors Field). Over the last five games, Myers is hitting .471 with four doubles and has a 1.502 OPS.

* Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina had been mired in an atrocious 1 for 39 slump at the plate before breaking out the last four games. He went 3 for 4 in Thursday’s win at Cincinnati, including the game winning single.

Totals Trend

We have a 5.5 run total Friday night in San Francisco as Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers come calling. The Giants counter with Johnny Cueto, who shares an 11-1 team start record with Kershaw. The Under is a combined 16-7-1 when these two take the hill and here are their respective numbers over their last three starts: Kershaw (0.79 ERA, 0.485 WHIP), Cueto (0.43 ERA, 0.905 WHIP).

LEADING OFF: Arrieta tries to avoid skid, Mengden debuts
June 11, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

ARRIETA LOOKING FOR 10TH WIN

Jake Arrieta went nearly a full year without losing a game, but now the Cubs ace is trying to avoid a losing streak. Arrieta (9-1, 1.80 ERA) looks to bounce back from his first loss of the season when he faces the Braves. Arrieta struck out 12 batters in five innings in the Cubs' 3-2 loss to Arizona which ended his streak of 20 straight wins. Arrieta allowed no runs in a combined 13 innings while winning each of his two starts against the Braves last season.

ON THE RISE

Daniel Mengden makes his major league debut for Oakland in the second game of a series against the Cincinnati Reds, completing his fast rise through the Athletics' system. They obtained the 23-year-old pitcher from Houston as part of the deal for Scott Kazmir last July. He was a fourth-round pick in 2014 and didn't make it above Class A last season.

ASTRO-NOMICAL NUMBERS

The Rays send RHP Chris Archer (4-7, 4.73) to the mound against Astros RHP Mike Fiers (3-3, 5.00) in the middle date of the three-game weekend series. Archer is 3-1 with a 0.80 ERA in five career starts vs. Houston and enters this one with a streak of 15 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings against the Astros.

WATCHING WILY

Brewers opening day starter Wily Peralta (3-7, 6.79) could be in danger of losing his spot in the rotation. The right-hander has struggled most of the year, and Matt Garza appears to be getting close to returning from a right back muscle injury. Peralta's latest chance to prove his case comes when he gets the start against the New York Mets.

CLOSING IT OUT

The amateur draft wraps with rounds 11-40, ending the three-day event. Rounds 3-10 happened Friday, and a few familiar names were among those announced, including Craig Biggio's son, Cavan, and Rafael Palmeiro's son, Preston. Cavan Biggio, a Notre Dame infielder, went to Toronto in the fifth round, while Preston Palmeiro, a first baseman at North Carolina State, went in the seventh round to the Orioles.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Nolan Ryan threw seven no-hitters, to seven different catchers........

-- Jeff Torborg-- Became a manager when his playing days were done.

-- Art Kusyner-- Starting C Torborg broke his finger two days before this game.

-- Tom Egan-- Like Bob Uecker, a journeyman catcher with a career .200 BA.

-- Ellie Rodriguez-- Was All-Star rep for Royals in their first-ever season.

-- Alan Ashby-- Is now a broadcaster for the Astros.

-- John Russell-- Was Rangers' 3rd-string catcher when he caught the no-hitter.

-- Mike Stanley-- Best hitter of these seven, hit 187 HRs, had a .370 OB%.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

13) Someone brought this up on Twitter Friday night and it took me a damn hour to unravel the whole thing in my mind:

Vince Carter was drafted by Golden State on June 24, 1988; he was traded later that night to Toronto for Antawn Jamison, but the pick that was used to draft him had already been traded twice, in 1993 and 1994-- the Anfernee Hardaway/Chris Webber deal in '93 and a deal involving Scott Skiles the next year.

In both trades, a pick Golden State later used to draft Todd Fuller (whoops) was also moved with the Carter pick.

12) Vince Carter scored 23,969 points in his NBA career, earned $165,575,296 in salary; the pick used to select him was traded when he was in 10th and 11th grade.

11) Barry Bonds was a great, great hitter; he hit 762 HRs, had a career OB% of .444.

Don Mattingly hit .307 in his fine career, with 222 homers, also a great hitter.

But playing isn't coaching; Mattingly is Marlins' manager, Bonds is a hitting coach and neither one of them can fix Giancarlo Stanton, who is going thru one of the worst hitting funks I've ever seen. Its like he has suddenly become Adam Dunn, except he never walks. Stanton is hitting .195 this season. No bueno.

With two strikes on him this season, Stanton is 9-112, with 14 walks, 77 strikeouts. Seeing as they still owe hm $325M or so down the road, they need to have coaches who can fix him, even if that coach wasn't a Hall of Fame player.

10) White Sox brought up SS prospect Tim Anderson and DFA'd Jimmy Rollins, making them younger, more athletic and probably better.

9) In Jose Quintana's last 17 losses, White Sox scored a total of 19 runs.

8) Cavan Biggio, son of the Astros' Hall of Famer, was a 5th-round draft pick of the Blue Jays. That pick was announced by Cavan's older brother, who is an intern in the commissioner's office. There is networking in baseball; your dad is a Hall of Famer, you have a better shot at an internship.

7) Red Sox have scored 54 more runs than any team in the AL; some credit has to go to hitting coach Chili Davis, who is very underrated. When he was in Oakland, the A's made the playoffs all three years. Probably not a coincidence.

6) New sliding rules at second base are hurting offenses; you get lot more double plays now, with runners not allowed to do anything remotely aggressive to break up a double play. Reducing contact around home plate probably helped scoring go up.

5) Golfer Jason Day threw out the first pitch at the Pirates game last night; he is in town for the US Open at Oakmont next week.

4) Chicago Cubs used a 6th-round pick on Chad Hockin, who is the grandson of the great hitter, the late Harmon Killebrew.

3) Klay Thompson wore a Dodgers' hat at a Giants' home game last night, normally not the best way to make friends in the Bay Area, but Thompson's brother plays for the Dodgers and if the Warriors win Monday night, it'll all be forgotten, I'm guessing.

2) CBS made a good move, dumped former referee Mike Carey as its rules expert; Carey wasn't good on TV, although he did improve last year.

1) I'd like to propose a change to how saves are tracked; the current system just isn't a good yardstick for how closers finish games.

-- Protect a one-run lead, 3 points. Lose a one-run lead, lose 1 point.
-- Protect a two-run lead, 2 points. Lose a two-run lead, lose 2 points.
-- Protect a three-run lead, 1 point. Lose a three-run lead, lose 3 points.

For instance, Huston Street entered the game last night with a 3-0 lead; he blew the lead, so he would lose three points. I think over the course of a season, this point system would be more telling than the current one.

Preview: Dodgers (33-30) at Giants (37-26)
Game: 3
Venue: AT&T Park
Date: June 12, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants will take a four-game lead atop the National League West into their series finale against the second-place Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

But, clearly, the three-time champions since 2010 aren't satisfied.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy responded to Friday's 3-2 loss in the series opener by announcing two significant changes that will impact the look of his team moving forward.

With the Giants having scored just seven runs in the first three games of their current homestand, Bochy has decided to flip-flop two of his key hitters, Matt Duffy and Brandon Belt, in the batting order.

The move paid immediate dividends Saturday when Belt, hitting third, walked with two outs in the first inning and Duffy, slotted fifth, drove him in from second base with an RBI single after clean-up hitting Buster Posey also had walked.

Belt wound up getting on base three times in the game, which is exactly what Bochy is looking for from the guy in the spot ahead of Posey.

And Duffy had two RBIs, the type of production Bochy would like to see if and when teams pitch around the perennial All-Star.

The veteran skipper noted before the game that the move wasn't a one-day deal.

"We're going to see how it looks," he said. "We need to do something to score some more runs."

The veteran manager also announced more clearly defined roles for his bullpen, especially right-hander Cory Gearrin, who will assume injured Sergio Romo's job as chief set-up man for closer Santiago Casilla.

The moves were meant to take some pressure off Casilla, who has been brought into non-save situations in four of his last seven outings.

That role most often had fallen upon Romo in the past. But with the veteran injured, and no end of his rehabilitation from a strained right flexor in sight, Bochy felt he needed to put the rookie Gearrin on alert that those situations would be his for the foreseeable future.

"Part of it is me," Bochy said of recent bullpen issues. "They're going out there for a hitter at a time. A lot of these are young guys. I need to do a better job of letting them know what to expect."

Even after a gut-wrenching, 5-4 loss Saturday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts wasn't planning any changes on the eve of the series finale.

"It felt like we had one taken away. It's a team we're chasing and we had a chance to gain ground," Roberts said of Saturday's 10-inning defeat. "But we've still got a chance to win the series, and that's our focus now."

Behind the scenes, Roberts' club was preparing for changes that could give the Dodgers a different look when they next see the Giants in August.

While the Dodgers were excited about 19-year-old Julio Urias getting the opportunity to get his feet wet in the rivalry on Sunday, matched up with Giants veteran Jake Peavy, the club had one eye on injury-rehab starts by more likely postseason starters Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu in the minors.

Also with an eye on future personnel moves the team might make in the playoff race, the Dodgers cleared yet another spot on their 40-man roster by releasing veteran Jose Tabata on Saturday.

The move resulted in the Dodgers eating the remainder of the utility man's $4.5 million guaranteed contract for 2016, plus paying an additional $750,000 to buy out the remainder of his deal.

The Dodgers already had paid veterans Carl Crawford and Alex Guerrero a total of $44 million to terminate their deals earlier this season.

LEADING OFF: Bogaerts upstaging Ortiz, Ventura still active
June 12, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:

X-MAN CAN

This was supposed to be David Ortiz's weekend in Minnesota - retirement farewell tour and all - but his Red Sox teammate Xander Bogaerts is stealing the show . Bogaerts is 8 for 10 with two homers and seven RBIs in the first two games of the weekend series, both Boston victories. He's batting .358 with eight homers and 43 RBIs on the season, and his defense at shortstop passes the eye test and is adored by advanced metrics. The 23-year-old has played at an MVP level for Boston, which is tied with Baltimore atop the AL East heading into its series finale with the Twins.

PITCHING ON APPEAL

Royals RHP Yordano Ventura (4-4, 5.32 ERA) remains active while he appeals a nine-game suspension resulting from a fight with Baltimore infielder Manny Machado last Tuesday. He'll face the Chicago White Sox and LHP Carlos Rodon (2-5, 4.41), who was pushed back from a scheduled start Thursday because of a sore neck.

UP LATE ON A SCHOOL NIGHT

Teenager Julio Urias (0-1, 6.94) makes his fourth big league start in a primetime showdown with the Dodgers' NL West archrival, the Giants. The 19-year-old lefty bounced back from two disastrous starts with a solid four-inning outing against the Rockies his last time out. He only threw 86 pitches and should be on a similar pitch count most of the season. San Francisco sends out 35-year-old righty Jake Peavy (2-6, 6.41).

DALLAS VS TAMPA BAY

AL Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel (3-8, 5.44 ERA) looks to beat Tampa Bay for the first time. The left-hander is 0-3 with 4.78 ERA in five starts against the Rays. He'll face LHP Matt Moore (2-4, 5.56).

MATZ AN HISTORIC MET

LHP Steven Matz (7-2, 2.39) looks to improve on his franchise best 11-2 start to his career in a series finale against Milwaukee. He is 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA on the road this year. Zach Davies (4-3, 4.29) returns to the mound for the first time since taking a no-hitter into the seventh against Oakland. Davies hasn't lost a decision since April 29.

BREAKOUT ROOKIE

Tigers RHP Michael Fulmer takes a scoreless streak of 22 1/3 innings into a start against the Yankees. Fulmer, a rookie acquired from the Mets for Yoenis Cespedes last season, has won six straight decisions and held opponents to a .100 batting average over his last three starts.

MAKING A PITCH

Coming off a two-hit game Saturday, Cubs ace Jake Arrieta is joining fellow ace Madison Bumgarner in publicly making a plea to participate in the All-Star Home Run Derby. Bumgarner told ESPN last week that he wants to be in the homer-hitting contest. ''If he's in it, I want to be in it,'' Arrieta said, adding ''I honestly think that would probably be the most adrenalin I would ever have.'' Arrieta has a career .171 average with three home runs - all in the past two seasons.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Penguins 3, Sharks 1-- Pittsburgh wins its fourth Stanley Cup.

-- Royals 3, White Sox 1-- Ned Yost is now 500-499 as Royals' manager.

-- Tigers 4, Bronx 1-- Michael Fulmer has now thrown 28 consecutive scoreless innings; he was in the Mets/Cespedes trade last summer.

-- Marcus Lee transfers from Kentucky to Cal, a good get for Cuonzo Martin.

-- Cubs 13, Braves 2-- Chicago has 23 wins by 5+ runs; they have 18 losses.

-- Kenny Smith Jr committed to play hoop at University of Pacific in the WCC.

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sad weekend......

13) 50 people gunned down in a nightclub. 53 more injured.

I've never touched a gun in my life, so obviously I am not pro-gun, but how can any reasonable person not think something needs to be done about this?

12) Draymond Green got assesed a flagrant foul from Friday night's game, which puts him over the limit on flagrants, so he is suspended for tonight's Game 5.

11) Wonder how many kids realize what a great player George Gervin was? He is in that Gatorade commercial with Dwyane Wade-- he just isn't some older guy wearing a sweatsuit- he was one of the most prolific scorers that game has ever seen.

10) Gervin once played for an ABA team called the Virginia Squires, who were an announcer's nightmare; they had Gervin, Julius Erving and George Irvine all on the same team. Imagine the three of them coming down on a 3-on-2 fast break.

9) Florida Gators' baseball field is weird; it doesn't have dirt basepaths from home to first base or from third base to home.

8) During replay reviews at White Sox home games, if the original call went in favor of the White Sox, the PA system plays the Beatles' classic, "Let It Be".

7) OK, so I traded five guys to get Felix Hernandez on my fantasy team, which has turned into a debacle, since Hernandez got hurt right after I traded for him. Turns out he may have gotten hurt while celebrating a teammate's home run. Oy.

If I was a head coach, no matter what sport, I'd have a strict rule about celebrations; no one leaves their feet to celebrate. Kendrys Morales broke his leg jumping on home plate after a walk-off home run- it has greatly hampered his career since. Find a way to celebrate without jumping and putting your legs at risk- it is not that difficult.

6) I'm flipping channels late Saturday night and I come across Bloodsucking Bastards, arguably the worst title in movie history. Billed "an action-packed horror comedy", it took me about 90 seconds to turn off-- simply awful.

5) Cardinals are now 35-0 when they lead in the 7th inning or later, only big league team that is still unbeaten in that scenario.

4) Far as I know, there are three big league pitchers who wear single-digit numbers; Marcus Stroman (6) of Toronto, Julio Urias (7) of Dodgers, Mike Leake (8) on Cards. Colorado's Adam Ottavino wears 0, but he is on the DL.

3) If you read this space a lot, you know that Steve Martin is my favorite; what a great comedian/actor, a brilliant guy. My two favorite Steve Martin movie scenes:
-- In Roxanne, when he comes up with 20 (actually 26) jokes in a crowded bar about his long nose.
-- In Leap of Faith, when the teenage boy drops his leg braces and walks across the stage, years after being crippled in a car accident.

2) Get well soon to Mets' manager Terry Collins, who wasn't feeling well and was taken to a Milwaukee hospital before Sunday's game with the Brewers. He stayed in Milwaukee for observation overnight; we wish him the best.

1) Our thoughts and prayers go out to people in Orlando after Saturday night's mass killings. Workers were going thru the ravaged nightclub Sunday, with cellphones of the deceased still ringing in their pockets, as loved ones tried to find them.

The shooter is someone the FBI investigated in 2013 and 2014; how this person was allowed to legally purchase guns is beyond me. At some point this has to stop before the world becomes one big target range, but thats just my opinion. There have to be more stringent background checks on people who want to buy weapons.

We need to be nicer to each other, to tolerate each other, before it is too late.
