Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Ben Simmons signed with Nike, taking less money than adidas offered.

-- Colorado's rookie SS Trevor Story has 16 HRs, but only six of them have been at Coors Field.

-- Cubs' pitcher Kyle Hendricks is a scratch golfer.

-- Maryland's basketball team is 9-0-1 vs spread in its last 10 conference tournament games; Ohio State is 0-6-1 vs spread in its last seven.

-- Eight of last 12 Super Bowl champs made the playoffs again the next year; nine of 11 made it the second year, eight of last 13 the third year.

-- Compare that to Super Bowl losers; only four of last 15 made the playoffs the third year after that Super Bowl loss. It would appear as if winning a title helps in sustaining the success of the program over a period of time.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings.......

13) Is a hot dog a sandwich? Inquiring minds want to know. Most people I've heard say no, but it is meat in between two pieces of bread, so those who argue "yes" have some ammunition on their side. Let me know what you think.

12) More hot dog banter: Everyone puts different stuff on hot dogs, but how in god's name can anyone eat sauerkraut? It is the single worst-tasting food I've ever eaten, narrowly beating about broccoli and beet greens, which are both terrible.

11) Remember when Noah Syndergaard got tossed for throwing behind Chase Utley at Citi Field a week ago Friday? Controversial call, and umpire Adam Hamari has not worked the plate again since that game- he makes his return behind the.plate tonight in Los Angeles, at the Colorado-Dodger game, 12 days later after the Syndergaard mess.

Did he get a week's suspension? No one is talking, but it looks that way.

10) Odd fact of the day: On September 12, 1969, Mets swept a doubleheader from the Pirates, winning both games 1-0. Both runs were driven in by Mets' pitchers.

9) Mets have scored least amount of runs they've ever scored at this point in season, despite hitting most HRs they've hit at this stage of the season, since 1989.

8) As a baseball fan, whether it be the A's or my fantasy team, I'd much rather my players had the four days of the All-Star break off, rather than being busy all week during the break, either in Home Run Derby or in the All-Star Game. Let 'em relax.

Still think that two years ago, when A's stumbled to a 22-33 finish, having six of their guys in All-Star Game contributed to their lame finish- they got tired. Plus, the stupid Cespedes trade didn't help any, either.

7) This from CBSSports.com: Scientists are in agreement that 22 hours without sleeping has been shown to cause cognitive and reactive impairment comparable to being legally drunk.

Not sure what it means if you stay up for 24 hours and you're also drinking heavily.

6) Tim Lineceum's first two starts for the Angels' AAA team: 10 IP, six hits, seven runs (five earned), five walks, 11 strikeouts. Most people think his next start will be for the Los Angeles Angels, who desperately need starting pitching.

5) In their long history, San Diego Chargers are 421-420-11 in regular season games, 11-17 in playoff games, losing their one and only Super Bowl appearance.

4) In his first five AAA rehab games since his suspension ended, Jose Reyes is 2-16 with four walks while batting second for Albuquerque.

3) Former Colorado closer Brian Fuentes was saying on Twitter Tuesday night that as a former closer, it was not the same when he came into a game if it wasn't a situation where he could get a save. Just not the same adrenaline rush, he said.

2) Yordano Ventura drilled Manny Machado in the fifth inning last night and a brawl erupted in Baltimore. Ventura is a noted head-hunter who rarely has to bat because he pitches in the American League. Machado is a hothead, too; both these guys have had scuffles with the A's in the last two years. Suspensions will follow.

1) RIP Sean Rooks, 46, who collapsed and died in a Philadelphia restaurant Tuesday night, hours after interviewing with the Knicks for an assistant coaching job. Rooks was a 12-year NBA veteran who played college ball at Arizona- he had been with the 76ers as an assistant coach specializing in player development. RIP, sir.

Hottest team: Rangers (9-1 last 10)
Texas improved to 8-0 against Houston with another comeback victory against their state rivals last night, 4-3. The Rangers maintained their four-game lead in the AL West over the Mariners after winning their ninth game in 10 tries, while winning for the seventh straight time at Globe Life Park. Texas picked up its third consecutive one-run victory, while rallying in each of those wins. Yu Darvish takes the mound for the Rangers tonight against the Astros, looking to improve to 3-0 after beating the Pirates and Mariners in his first two starts since missing over a year following Tommy John surgery.

Coldest team: Royals (0-6 last six)
Kansas City closed out its last homestand with a perfect 6-0 record, but the Royals are current on a road trip straight out of the Twilight Zone. The Royals were swept in a four-game series by the Indians, while scoring two runs in the first two losses at Baltimore. In Tuesday’s 9-1 blowout loss to the Orioles, the Royals endured a benches-clearing brawl after Kansas City right-hander Yordano Ventura drilled Manny Machado as the Orioles’ third baseman charged the mound. The Royals have several regulars out due to injury and are playing plenty of young guys, but the offense has dried up by scoring four runs in the last five games.

Hottest pitcher: Madison Bumgarner, Giants (7-2, 1.91 ERA)
One of the best pitching matchups of the season takes place at AT&T Park in San Francisco tonight as Bumgarner opposes Boston’s David Price. The Red Sox got past the Giants last night in 10 innings, 5-3, but runs should be at a premium tonight. San Francisco owns a 6-0 record in Bumgarner’s last six starts, while the southpaw hasn’t lost a home decision since April 20 against Arizona. Bumgarner has allowed only one earned run in his past two home starts against the Cubs and Blue Jays, as the Giants’ ace is making his second career start against Boston after losing to the Red Sox back in 2010 at home.

Coldest pitcher: Taijuan Walker, Mariners (2-6, 3.94 ERA)
Things have gone backwards for Walker following a promising start as the right-hander has allowed 24 earned runs in his last five outings. Walker is winless in his last seven starts, while Seattle has won only once in this span, coming in a 6-5 victory over Tampa Bay last month. Walker has allowed five home runs in his last two starts, but the Indians have scored only four runs in the past two games of this series.

Biggest UNDER run: Rockies (4-1 last five)
Colorado fell short in Tuesday’s 4-3 setback at Los Angeles, but the Rockies cashed another ‘under’ against the Dodgers. Through the first five games of their current road trip against NL West foes, the ‘under’ has hit four times, as Colorado has allowed four runs or fewer in all five contests. Southpaw Chris Rusin takes the mound for the Rockies tonight against the Dodgers as the ‘under’ has cashed in three of his four starts away from Coors Field this season.

Biggest OVER run: Nationals (7-2-1 last 10)
Washington erased a 5-2 deficit at Chicago last night by scoring eight unanswered runs to beat the White Sox, 10-5 to cash the ‘over’ of 8 ½. The Nationals have scored 10 runs in back-to-back games, as they face newly-acquired James Shields tonight on the South Side of Chicago. Shields struggled with the Padres this season by going 2-7, while allowing 10 earned runs in 2.2 innings at Seattle in his final start before getting traded to Chicago. Max Scherzer counters for Washington, as the former Cy Young winner has eclipsed the ‘over’ in six of nine starts this season, including three of the last four road outings.

Matchup to watch: Mets vs. Pirates
Pittsburgh captured Tuesday’s double-header at PNC Park by beating New York by exact 3-1 scores. Noah Syndergaard looks to get the Mets back on track as the blonde right-hander goes for his seventh victory of the season. Four of Syndergaard’s six wins this season have come away from PNC Park, including a 6-2 triumph at Miami in his last outing. Rookie Jameson Taillon makes his Major League debut for the Pirates on the mound, as the second pick of the 2010 draft compiled a 4-2 record with an ERA of 2.04 at Triple-A Indianapolis. Since the start of last season, the Pirates have won all eight meetings with the Mets, as New York has scored two runs or less in all five losses at PNC Park.

Betcha didn’t know: The Yankees have won each of the last five home matchups with the Angels dating back to the start of 2015. New York has outscored Los Angeles in its current series, 11-5, as Nathan Eovaldi takes the ball tonight for the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers own a 4-1 record in Eovaldi’s five home starts this season, and 11-3 in his past 14 starts at Yankee Stadium since April 2015.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-200) vs. Rockies

Biggest public underdog: Athletics (+110) at Brewers

Biggest line move: Padres (-140 to -155) vs. Braves

LEADING OFF: Price vs Bumgarner, Shields starts with Sox
June 8, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

LEFTY SHOWDOWN

Red Sox left-hander David Price (7-2, 4.88) can't recall facing a pitcher who hits home runs, but that will change when he goes against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (7-2, 1.91), who wants to be in the All-Star Home Run Derby next month. Price and Bumgarner will pitch in an interleague matchup at AT&T Park featuring two of baseball's best left-handers. ''Those games are always fun, but I definitely don't put more significance on any other game, especially right now,'' Price said. ''He's throwing the ball extremely well. I want to go out there and throw better.''

SHIELDS UP

James Shields makes his first start with the White Sox since a trade from San Diego. The durable right-hander was 2-7 in 11 starts with the Padres and traded shortly after being called out by San Diego executive chairman Ron Fowler following one of the poorest starts of his career. ''Obviously the frustrations that he had with our team, you definitely don't blame him,'' Shields said . ''As a competitor, I felt the same way, I was frustrated with losing games over there. But obviously to single me out, I don't know if that was the right move or not. But here I am.'' Shields faces Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer (6-4, 3.87).

GREEN BUC

Heralded prospect Jameson Taillon makes his major league debut for the Pirates against the Mets. Taillon had Tommy John surgery in 2014 and returned this season to Triple-A, where he has a 2.04 ERA and a 61-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Manager Clint Hurdle says he isn't sure if Taillon will remain with the team beyond this outing. ''Some of it is in his control and some of it isn't,'' Hurdle said. ''We'll see what happens.'' Taillon shares the mound with Noah Syndergaard (6-2, 1.91) in his debut.

FORGOT HOW TO LOSE

Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman is unbeaten in nine starts since April 14 and faces the Royals in the finale of a three-game series. The unquestioned ace of Baltimore's starting rotation, Tillman is 7-1 with a 3.33 ERA after going 11-11 with a 4.99 ERA last year. The defending World Series champion Royals will start right-hander Edinson Volquez (5-5, 4.03), who has a 6.67 ERA on the road this season.

LOOKING FOR 11

Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia (4-5, 3.48) is 10-4 career against the Reds, matching Oliver Perez for the most wins over Cincinnati by an active pitcher. He'll get a chance to break the tie in his first appearance against the Reds this season. Garcia held the Reds to one run in seven innings in his last start against them in 2015.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the College World Series, with Super Regionals this week

-- 5-1-- Florida, Louisville, Mississippi State, Texas A&M

-- 6-1-- Miami-- Stadium is named after A-Rod, but he never played there.

-- 7-1-- LSU-- Les Miles should coach first for a couple innings.

-- 10-1-- Texas Tech-- Wouldn't want to pitch in Lubbock if wind is blowing out.

-- 12-1-- South Carolina-- Not a lot of northern teams on this list.

-- 25-1-- Coastal Carolina, Arizona, Cal-Santa Barbara

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud......

13) Sauerkraut got a lot of support from e-mailers today, which baffles me, but that is what makes life interesting-- we like different things.

12) I was also informed that the world's largest sauerkraut factory is in Phelps, NY, near where a friend of mine's grandfather lives. You learrn new stuff every day.

11) Speaking of which, it is now illegal to sit on a sidewalk in Saratoga Springs, NY, where the six-week horse racing meet is held every summer. Not sure if the mayor is a guy who sells benches, but that seems like a dumb thing to have as a law.

10) Maria Sharapova was suspended for two years, which means she is likely to lose as much as $50M in income during that time. Sharapova has been the world's highest-paid female athlete for the last 11 years, but that streak is over now.

9) A Uber driver from Boulder, CO won $1M in a World Series of Poker tourney this week, after being down to one $500 chip at one point in the tournament. Something you rarely read about are people who try to become pro poker players and fail; this guy went bust couple years ago, moved to Colorado and started driving for Uber, then built up some cash and took a shot in this year's WSOP and hit it big. Good for him.

8) Jacksonville Jaguars paid WR Allen Hurns $40M for four years this offseason, now find out Hurns is allergic to grass; no bueno. Will they switch to Field Turf?

7) Washington 11, White Sox 4-- James Sheilds faced 17 batters in his White Sox debut and seven of them scored, not what the struggling Pale Hose needed. He threw 84 pitches and got six outs. Chicago is 6-20 in its last 26 games.

6) Braves' play-by play Chip Caray, grandson of Harry, son of Chip, has improved a lot as a play-play guy; he used to be awful. Haven't listened to Braves' games much the last few years because I don't have any Braves on my fantasy team, but I have this year and Chip is pretty good now. He has a very good partner in Joe Simpson.

5) Phillies young pitching star Vince Velasquez left Wednesday's game after two pitches, never a good sign. Apparently some kind of biceps issue. Last thing Phillies need right now is a pitching injury. Last thing anyone needs, actually.

4) Why I like Phil Martelli as a college hoop coach; St Joe's is 12-3 vs spread in its last 15 conference tournament games, 11-4 vs spread as a road underdog in conference games. He has good players and he lets them play, which gives them confidence.

3) Rumors in NYC this week that St John's assistant coach Barry Rohrssen is off to another job, possibly to be replaced by former NBA star Mitch Richmond. St John's gets to play the Big East tournament on its home court every year, yet they are 0-7 vs spread in last seven Big East tournament games.

Then there is Providence, which covered its last seven Big East tourney games.

2) Cavaliers 120, Warriors 90-- 10 of last 12 Cleveland games were decided by 11+ points. Golden State is 3-5 on the road in playoffs. Still think all playoff series should be best-of-3 and the Finals best-of-5. Much more dramatic that way.

1) Tonight was Golden State's 102nd game this season, not counting the handful of preseason games they play; it was Cleveland's 99th game. NBA is a long season, then the draft is June 23, and the NBA Summer League is in Las Vegas starting July 8. Not a lot of rest for the executives of the good teams.

Regular season ended in mid-April, so the lesser teams have had some time off.

Thursday's Diamond Notes
June 9, 2016

Hottest team:

Nationals (7-2 last nine)
Washington’s offense has blown up in the Midwest the last few days, as the Nationals plated at least 10 runs for the third straight game on Wednesday. The Nationals knocked around James Shields and the White Sox in an 11-4 blowout at U.S. Cellular Field, moving their run total to 31 in the past three games. Washington closes out its nine-game road swing tonight looking for its seventh victory, as the Nats own a 5-1 record in the last six series finales. Gio Gonzalez takes the mound for Washington tonight, as the southpaw is winless in his last three starts, allowing 25 hits and 18 earned runs.

Coldest team:

Angels (2-5 last seven)
It’s been a rough series for Los Angeles at Yankee Stadium, dropping the first three games by an average of four runs a game. The Yankees pulled away in a 12-6 triumph on Wednesday to improve to 7-2 in the past nine matchups with the Halos. The Angels have lost four of their past five series finales, as right-hander Jhoulys Chacin looks to stop the bleeding for Los Angeles tonight. Chacin has won once in five starts for the Angels since getting acquired from the Braves in early May, while allowing three earned runs in five innings of an 8-7 loss at Pittsburgh his last time out.

Hottest pitcher:

Josh Tomlin, Indians (8-1, 3.54 ERA)
Cleveland attempts to pull off a series split at Seattle following consecutive losses, as Tomlin has been nearly unbeatable this season. The Indians own a sterling 9-1 record in Tomlin’s 10 starts, including a 4-0 mark away from Progressive Field. Tomlin bounced back from his first loss of the season to shut down the Royals in a 7-1 victory in his past start, delivering his sixth quality outing of 2016. The last time Tomlin faced the Mariners came back in 2014, as the right-hander tossed a gem by allowing one hit and striking out 11 in a complete game shutout.

Coldest pitcher:

Tom Koehler, Marlins (3-6, 4.50 ERA)
Miami tries to avoid a sweep at Minnesota after losing a pair of high-scoring games the last two nights. Koehler has won once in his past seven trips to the mound with the only victory coming at Atlanta in late May. The Marlins right-hander has walked five batters in four of his last five starts, while owning a 1.80 WHIP away from South Florida. In Koehler’s last 15 starts on the highway since 2015, the Marlins have won only five times.

Biggest UNDER run:

Indians (5-0-1 last six)
Cleveland’s offense has dried up since heading to the Pacific Northwest as the Indians have scored only four runs in the first three games against the Mariners, resulting in three ‘unders.’ The Tribe’s pitching staff went through a solid stretch prior to blowing up the last two games as Cleveland allowed three runs over a four-game stretch that ended Monday. Cleveland has cashed the ‘under’ in five of the last six games away from Progressive Field, but Josh Tomlin heads to the mound tonight as the right-hander is 7-0-1 to the ‘over’ in his past eight starts.

Biggest OVER run:

Twins (12-3 last 15)
Minnesota seeks its third sweep of the season as the Twins close out their series with the Marlins. The Twins’ lineup has exploded recently by scoring 13 runs in the first two wins over Miami, but the pitching has imploded by allowing at least four runs in eight consecutive games. Is another ‘over’ in store for the Twins tonight? Ervin Santana heads to the mound for Minnesota as the right-hander owns a 5.46 ERA at Target Field this season, while the ‘over’ has cashed in three of his last four home outings.

Matchup to watch:

Orioles vs. Blue Jays
These two AL East rivals are hooking up for the first time since April as all three games were decided by one run apiece. Baltimore grabbed two of three from Toronto in that series, as the Orioles have won seven of their last eight games overall. Toronto returns home from a 3-3 road swing as the Jays avoided a sweep at Detroit with a 7-2 blowout of the Tigers on Wednesday. The Jays are starting to recapture that Rogers Center magic by winning five of their last six home games, including a pair of series victories over the Red Sox and Yankees to close out May. Marcus Stroman looks to get on track for Toronto as the right-hander has given up at least six earned runs in three of his past four starts.

Betcha didn’t know:

The Pirates travel to Colorado for a make-up game this afternoon at Coors Field. Pittsburgh has captured five of six matchups from Colorado this season, but this is a difficult scheduling spot for the Bucs. After completing a six-game homestand topped off by an extra-innings loss to the Mets last night, the Pirates head to Denver for today’s contest, as they have to come back to Pittsburgh afterwards for a key three-game series with the Cardinals this weekend.

Biggest public favorite: Cardinals (-165) at Reds

Biggest public underdog:
Rangers (+105) vs. Astros

Biggest line move: Rockies (+105 to -110) vs. Pirates

Orioles visit Blue Jays
June 9, 2016

BALTIMORE ORIOLES (35-23) at TORONTO BLUE JAYS (32-29)

First pitch: Thursday, 7:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Baltimore +145, Toronto -155, Total: 9

The Orioles will be looking to win their fifth straight game when they face the Blue Jays on Thursday.

Baltimore is scorching hot right now and the team has now won four straight games. The team is coming off of a sweep over Kansas City and allowed just two earned runs in the entire three-game set. It’s also worth noting that three of the Orioles’ past four games have gone UNDER the total, but that has a lot to do with the way the team is pitching.

The Jays, meanwhile, have now lost three of their past five games. They are, however, coming off of a 7-2 victory in the final contest of a three-game set versus the Tigers. The Orioles and Blue Jays have met three times this season and the Orioles were victorious in two of those games. They are, however, just 8-10 against the Blue Jays in Toronto over the past three seasons.

On the mound for Baltimore in this one will be RHP Tyler Wilson (2-5, 4.39 ERA, 27 K) and he’ll be going up against RHP Marcus Stroman (5-2, 4.82 ERA, 55 K) for Toronto. One thing worth pointing out is that the Orioles are 12-3 against the money line after two straight games where the bullpen gave up no runs this season. They do, however, face a Toronto team that is 9-2 against the money line with an on base percentage of .285 or worse over the past five games this season.

The Orioles are playing very well right now, but they will need a good start from Tyler Wilson in order to keep their winning streak going on Thursday. Wilson has really struggled his past few times out, allowing three or more earned runs in four consecutive outings. In his most recent appearance, Wilson allowed five earned runs on seven hits in just four innings of work. Baltimore needs him to start working deeper into games and he needs to do a better job of keeping the ball out of play.

Offensively, one guy that will be looking forward to this one is OF Adam Jones (.239, 9 HR, 32 RBI). Jones has really had an awful season for Baltimore, but he is 3-for-6 with an RBI against Stroman in his career. He has had his number in their limited action against one another and it’d be big if he can produce at the plate on Thursday.

Another guy that needs to be monitored is OF Mark Trumbo (.294, 20 HR, 48 RBI), as he has been incredible for the Orioles this season. Trumbo has five homers over the past seven games and is always a threat to go yard. It’d be big if he can provide some power for Baltimore in this one.

The Blue Jays were excited to have a healthy Marcus Stroman back this season, but he has been awful for them lately. Over his past two starts, Stroman has allowed 13 earned runs on 20 hits in just 11 innings of work. He has walked six batters over the past two games and will need to get his control back moving forward. One thing that does bode well for Stroman is that he pitched well against the Orioles in his last meeting with them. Stroman faced Baltimore on Apr. 19 and allowed just three earned runs in seven innings of work. Toronto would certainly sign up for another performance like that in this one.

Offensively, the Blue Jays will be counting on 3B Josh Donaldson (.255, 14 HR, 33 RBI) to provide a spark. Donaldson has underperformed this season, but he is coming off of a big game against the Tigers. He went 3-for-4 with a single, a triple and a homer on Wednesday and should be feeling very confident coming into this one.

DH Edwin Encarnacion (.237, 12 HR, 46 RBI) is somebody to keep an eye on this one. He is 0-for-10 over the past three games, but he is far too good of a hitter to keep playing so poorly. He should be able to get back on track in this one and it’d be bad news for Baltimore if he does.

LEADING OFF: Phillies on the clock, Stroman seeks control
June 9, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

DRAFT DAY

The Phillies have the first pick in this year's amateur draft, with the first two rounds (and two ''competitive balance rounds'') happening at MLB Network's Secaucus, New Jersey, studios beginning at 7 p.m. EDT. Philadelphia's top options include New Jersey high school LHP Jason Groome, Mercer OF Kyle Lewis, California high school OF Mickey Moniak, Florida LHP A.J. Puk, Louisville OF Corey Ray and Tennessee 3B Nick Senzel.

BACK UNDER CONTROL?

Blue Jays RHP Marcus Stroman (5-2, 4.82 ERA) tries to rediscover the strike zone in a start against the Orioles. Stroman easily set a career high when he walked five in a 6-4 loss to the Red Sox in his last start. The lack of control was uncharacteristic for the 25-year-old - he's walked just 2.23 batters per nine innings in his career.

IMPROVING WAINO

Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright (5-4, 5.40) looks to keep his ERA trending in the right direction after a lackluster start to the season. The 34-year-old is 2-1 with a 3.04 ERA over his last four starts after beginning the year 3-3 with a 6.80 mark. Despite the improvements, he's still allowing hits and home runs at the highest rates of his career after missing almost all of 2015 with an Achilles tendon injury. Cincinnati pitches LHP Brandon Finnegan (2-4, 3.89).

NOT SO SUPER NOVA

Yankees RHP Ivan Nova (4-3, 4.41) has allowed at least one home run in six consecutive starts, an unfortunate streak he'll try to end against the Angels. Nova has perhaps been catching too much of the plate, allowing as many home runs this season (eight) as walks. The homer struggles are a bit perplexing, too, because Nova ranks fourth in the majors with a 59 percent groundball rate (minimum 40 innings pitched).

LOCKED IN

Pirates LHP Jeff Locke (5-3, 4.28) seeks his fifth consecutive win when the Pirates travel to Colorado for a makeup game. Locke allowed three runs - including two homers- over seven innings in an 8-7 win over the Angels in his last start. The Rockies send out RHP Chad Bettis (4-5, 5.58). The game at Coors Field interrupts a nine-game homestand for Pittsburgh.
