Hottest team: Cubs (7-1 last eight)

The Red Sox saw their 11-game winning streak end last night at New York, as tonight’s focus in this category will be on the best team in baseball. Chicago moved to 101-56 with a 6-4 victory at Pittsburgh on Tuesday, the sixth straight win in the series by the Cubs. Joe Maddon’s team has won six of their past eight games away from Wrigley Field, while improving to 6-2 at PNC Park this season with two contests remaining at Pittsburgh. Jake Arrieta heads to the mound tonight, as the Cubs own a 7-2 mark in his last nine starts, while Chicago has won four of his five starts against Pittsburgh this season.

Coldest team:
Twins (1-9 last 10)

Minnesota continues to be the top team in this category, coming off 4-3 defeat in extra innings at Kansas City last night. The Twins’ offense has been abysmal recently by scoring three runs or less in 10 consecutive games, while the UNDER has cashed eight times in this stretch. To make matters worse, Minnesota has dropped 16 of its past 18 games away from Target Field, as the Twins have yet to win at Kansas City this season by posting an 0-8 record at Kaufmann Stadium. Ervin Santana makes the start for Minnesota tonight, looking to end a four-start winless streak.

Hottest pitcher: Seth Lugo, Mets (4-2, 2.61 ERA)

New York’s rotation has suffered plenty of setbacks down the stretch as the Mets look to wrap up a Wild Card berth. Lugo has been the only consistent arm over the last month as New York has won six consecutive starts by the right-hander. Lugo is coming off a pair of no-decisions in one-run victories over the Twins and Phillies his last two turns, while allowing two earned runs in 12 innings of road wins at Atlanta and St. Louis. Lugo silenced the Marlins the last time he faced them at Citi Field on August 30 in a 7-4 win by tossing six innings and giving up two earned runs.

Coldest pitcher:
Tyler Chatwood, Rockies (11-9, 4.08 ERA)

Colorado has faltered down the stretch by losing five straight games, including Tuesday’s 12-3 drubbing at San Francisco. Chatwood owns an excellent road record at 7-1 with an ERA of 1.88 away from Coors Field, but the right-hander has lost two of his past three away starts. Since the beginning of August, the Rockies are 2-5 in Chatwood’s previous seven outings with both victories coming against San Diego, while four of his past five starts have sailed OVER the total.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (10-0 last 10)

Baltimore’s offense continues to sputter as the playoffs loom next week. First, the Orioles need to clinch a Wild Card berth, which took a blow in last night’s 5-1 loss at Toronto. The O’s offense has produced three runs or fewer in nine of the last 10 games, while the top three hitters in the lineup combined to hit 1-for-12 last night (Adam Jones, Chris Davis, Manny Machado). Since posting three OVERS at Tampa Bay earlier this month, the Orioles have cashed the UNDER in five of the previous seven road contests.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (7-0 last seven)

A lengthy rain delay derailed things for Philadelphia last night, as Jerad Eickhoff was removed after four innings in spite of allowing one hit, a solo homer. The Phillies built an early 6-1 lead over the Braves before Atlanta rallied to score six unanswered runs off the Philadelphia bullpen in a 7-6 triumph. Philadelphia’s pitching has been pathetic of late by giving up 51 runs in the last five games, including 17 in Sunday’s drubbing to the Mets. Things could change for the good tonight as Georgia native Adam Morgan takes the mound for the Phillies, registering four UNDERS in his past five outings.

Matchup to watch: Orioles vs. Blue Jays

Toronto is creeping closer towards a Wild Card berth and a return to the postseason for the second straight year. The Blue Jays moved two games ahead of the Orioles following Tuesday’s 5-1 victory over Baltimore to improve to 6-2 in the past eight contests. Josh Donaldson and Ezequiel Carrera each went deep for Toronto, while power bats Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista combined to go 0-for-8 with four strikeout. Baltimore’s advantage for the second AL Wild Card berth is down to one game after Detroit routed Cleveland.

The Jays have won each of the past three home starts made by Francisco Liriano, as the southpaw tossing six scoreless innings in his last outing, a 9-0 shutout of the Yankees on September 23. Chris Tillman lasted only 1.2 innings against Boston his last time out, as the Baltimore right-hander is winless in his past two appearances. The Orioles own a perfect 3-0 record in Tillman’s three starts against the Blue Jays this season, including a 6-2 extra innings victory in late July.

Betcha didn’t know: Sonny Gray returns to the mound tonight for Oakland following nearly a two-month stint on the shelf with a right forearm injury. The Athletics’ right-hander has struggled this season by posting a 5-11 record with an ERA of 5.74, while Oakland has lost five of his past six road starts. Gray faces the Angels tonight, as Los Angeles has beaten the righty twice this season.

Biggest public favorite: Rangers (-220) vs. Brewers

Memorial service set for Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez
September 28, 2016

MIAMI (AP) The Miami Marlins have scheduled a public memorial service for pitcher Jose Fernandez, who was killed in a weekend boat crash along with two friends.

The team said in a news release that fans can gather Wednesday along the west side of Marlins Park for the departure of a funeral motorcade at 2:16 p.m. Fernandez wore No. 16 on his jersey.

A public viewing will be held at St. Brendan's Catholic Church from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. A private funeral Mass will be held Thursday for family and Marlins players and personnel.

Instead of flowers, the Fernandez family asks for charitable contributions to the JDF16 Foundation, which is online at www.MiamiFoundation.org/jdf16.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash early Sunday into a rock jetty off South Beach.

NEW YORK (AP) Mark Teixeira hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning, and the New York Yankees staved off playoff elimination at the last possible moment with a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.

Boston clinched the AL East title nearly 30 minutes before Teixeira connected, thanks to Toronto's 3-2 loss against Baltimore. But a five-run comeback by New York in the ninth prevented its longtime rival from celebrating on the Yankee Stadium field.

The Orioles' victory put the Yankees on the brink of wild-card elimination following a surprising charge late this season. New York had only one infield hit and trailed 3-0 heading into the ninth, faced with the prospect of facing Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel.

Kimbrel, however, gave up a leadoff single to Brett Gardner and three straight walks, the last forcing in a run. Red Sox manager John Farrell lifted Kimbrel (2-5) for Joe Kelly, who struck out Starlin Castro and retired Didi Gregorius on a foul popup. With the Yankees down to their last out, Teixeira, planning to retire after this season, launched a 99 mph fastball on an 0-1 count to right-center.

James Pazos (1-0) was the winner.

ORIOLES 3, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Hyun Soo Kim hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the ninth inning off Roberto Osuna, and Baltimore beat Toronto to move within one game of the AL wild-card-leading Blue Jays.

With Toronto ahead 2-1, Jonathan Schoop singled with one out, pinch-runner Michael Bourn stole second and Kim homered on a 3-2 pitch into the visiting bullpen in right.

Osuna (3-3) has five blown save chances, including two in his last three appearances.

Baltimore's Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 46th home run, a solo drive off Jason Grilli in the eighth. Brian Duensing (1-0) got one out, and Zach Britton finished for his 47th save.

TIGERS 6, INDIANS 3, 5 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning, moments before the game was halted for good, and Detroit came away with a rain-shortened victory over Cleveland to keep pace with Baltimore in the AL wild-card race.

Detroit trails the Orioles by one game for the AL's second wild card, and the Tigers certainly caught a break in this one. The rain was a factor throughout the evening - there was also a delay during the third inning - and it was certainly coming down when Detroit began its rally in the fifth.

With two on and one out, Cabrera hit a line drive over the wall in right off Joseph Colon (1-3) for his 36th homer. Blaine Hardy (1-0) won in relief of Michael Fulmer.

PIRATES 8, CUBS 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - John Jaso hit for the cycle and drove in five runs in Pittsburgh's victory over Chicago.

Jaso tripled off reliever Pedro Strop in the seventh inning for the first cycle in the history of PNC Park and the first for the Pirates since 2004. Jaso's final hit was a fly ball to center field. He hesitated rounding second base, but went on and the throw from Albert Almora Jr. was up the baseline.

Jaso accomplished the feat in just four at-bats. The last Pirate to hit for the cycle was Daryle Ward on May 26, 2004, in St. Louis. The last Pirates' home cycle was by Jason Kendall on May 19, 2000, against the Cardinals at Three Rivers Stadium.

Against Chicago starter Jake Arrieta (18-8), Jaso singled in the second inning, hit a three-run home run in the fourth and doubled in the fifth. Arrieta went five innings and allowed 10 hits and seven runs, both season highs.

Pirates starter Jameson Taillon (5-4) allowed one hit and struck out four in six innings.

Chicago's Anthony Rizzo hit a solo homer, his 32nd of the season.

RANGERS 8, BREWERS 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Carlos Gomez hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and AL-leading Texas beat Milwaukee for its major league-best 49th come-from-behind victory.

Texas (94-65) moved closer to home-field advantage with a 1 1/2-game lead over Boston for the best record in the American League.

Jonathan Lucroy, the catcher traded from Milwaukee to Texas on Aug. 1, reached to start the eighth on a two-base error when the ball ricocheted off the glove of center fielder Hernan Perez. Delino DeShields came on as a pinch-runner, and after Mitch Moreland walked, he scored the tying run when Elvis Andrus greeted reliever Tyler Thornburg with a single to center.

Gomez then hit a 418-foot homer to left, his 13th this season. It was the eighth in 31 games for the Brewers' former two-time All-Star since joining the Rangers last month after being released by Houston. He had a three-run homer on Tuesday night, that one traveling 444 feet.

Rougned Odor hit a two-run homer in the first for the Rangers, his 32nd.

Jeremy Jeffress (1-0) worked the final two innings, winning for AL West champion Texas five days after being reinstated by Major League Baseball from the restricted list following a drunken driving arrest last month and then a three-week stint in an inpatient rehab clinic.

Corey Knebel (1-4) was the loser.

ROYALS 5, TWINS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kendrys Morales and Alex Gordon keyed an eighth-inning rally and Kansas City beat Minnesota, but the Royals were still knocked out of playoff contention.

The defending World Series champs were eliminated when Baltimore beat Toronto.

Morales' ground-rule double to right scored Jarrod Dyson, who had doubled and stole third. Gordon's single scored Whit Merrifield and pinch-runner Billy Burns.

Taylor Rogers (3-1), the fourth of five Twins pitchers, took the loss after allowing three runs, three hits and two walks while retiring only one of the six batters he faced.

Joakim Soria (5-8) worked a scoreless eighth to pick up the victory. Wade Davis got his 27th save.

METS 5, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - The Marlins walked half a block alongside a hearse carrying their ace away from Marlins Park at the start of a funeral motorcade, then peeled away with watery eyes to go back inside and play.

Drained by four days of grieving Jose Fernandez's death in a boating accident, Miami didn't have much left for the New York Mets. Jay Bruce hit his 32nd home run, James Loney also homered and New York helped their NL wild-card chances by beating Miami.

The Marlins' loss in their home finale eliminated them from playoff contention. Despite high hopes this year, they still haven't been to the postseason since 2003.

Set Lugo (5-2) went 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs.

Jose Urena (4-9) allowed five runs in five innings.

MARINERS 12, ASTROS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and Seattle beat Houston to keep pressure on the other AL wild-card contenders.

Cano's career-best 36th home run, a drive off Doug Fister (12-13), landed in the first row of the Crawford Boxes in left field. Cano has nine homers and 25 RBIs in 19 games against Houston this season.

Kyle Seager added another three-run drive in the eighth, his 30th home run this season.

James Paxton (6-7) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings, striking out eight.

Fister gave up five runs and five hits over 1 1/3 innings in the shortest start of his big league career. George Springer and Evan Gattis homered for Houston.

REDS 2, CARDINALS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Duvall's two-run single was all Cincinnati needed to beat St. Louis.

The Reds' third win in their last four games dealt a blow to the Cardinals' playoff hopes. St. Louis lost ground in the race for the two NL wild cards.

Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani (9-5) allowed one runner in each of the first four innings, but only once during that span did the Cardinals have anyone in scoring position. He stranded five runners, including two in the sixth, his last inning. He allowed six hits and one run.

It was the fifth quality start out of six in DeSclafani's career against the Cardinals. He improved to 4-1 with a 2.13 ERA against St. Louis.

Duvall drove in his 101st and 102nd RBIs with his third-inning single. He has seven RBI in the series.

Raisel Iglesias earned his fifth save in six opportunities with two innings of relief.

DIAMONDBACKS 3, NATIONALS 0, 5 INNINGS

WASHINGTON (AP) - Shelby Miller threw five shutout innings, Jean Segura had three hits to reach 200 for the season and Arizona beat Washington Nationals a rain-shortened game.

The start of the game was delayed 33 minutes by rain and was called with one out in the top of the sixth inning after waiting out a second delay of 70 minutes.

The NL East-champion Nationals have lost two of three to the last-place Diamondbacks and seven of their last 11 games overall.

Miller (3-12) capped an otherwise forgetful season with one of his best outings of the year, allowing five hits with one walk and striking out five to earn his first win since June 20.

Gio Gonzalez (11-11), Washington's projected No. 3 starter in the NL Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, struggled in his final tune up before the postseason.

WHITE SOX 1, RAYS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Todd Frazier hit his 40th home run, Miguel Gonzalez waited out a rain delay to throw 8 1/3 dominant innings and Chicago beat Tampa Bay.

Frazier set a career high and became the seventh White Sox player to reach the homer milestone when he connected off knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa (0-2) with two out in the seventh. Frazier is hitting .391 (18 for 46) during a 12-game hitting streak.

Gonzalez (5-7) returned after a 1 hour, 16-minute delay in the third inning and retired 18 of 19 before being lifted after Logan Forsythe's one-out single to left in the ninth. David Robertson got the final two outs for his 37th save in 44 tries.

The game also was delayed 21 minutes before the start. It was 57 degrees at first pitch and rain came and went amid blustery conditions as a tiny crowd watched Chicago win its fifth straight. The game itself lasted only 2 hours, 10 minutes.

BRAVES 12, PHILLIES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer, Daniel Castro had three RBIs and Dansby Swanson also drove in two runs, leading Atlanta past Philadelphia.

Mike Foltynewicz (9-5) pitched two-hit ball over five innings in his first start since Sept. 12, when he left a game against Miami with a left calf contusion.

The Braves won for the ninth time in their last 10 games. They have 21 victories in 34 games since Aug. 21, bouncing back from a dismal start.

Adam Morgan (2-11) lasted five innings, giving up 10 hits and nine runs.

Thursday’s six-pack

— Cubs are 99th team to win 100+ games in regular season; of the first 98 teams, 34 won the World Series that year.

— Former big league SS Jimmy Rollins will be a studio analyst on TBS for the baseball playoffs this year.

— Nick Saban was a college teammate of Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert at Kent State.

— More Jon Voight trivia: he went to Stepinac HS in White Plains, same high school that gave us Captain Lou Albano of WWE fame. My friend Joe also went there, one of NYC’s finest lawyers.

— Nationals lost catcher Wilson Ramos (torn ACL) for the year; tough for him, since he is a free agent after the season.

— Astros are taking that stupid hill out of centerfield this winter; they’re also selling the dirt from Tal’s Hill for $25 a jar. Not a big jar either. Oy.

Clutch hit of the night- Baltimore’s Hyun Soo Kim hit a 2-run homer in the ninth inning, giving the Orioles a 3-2 win in Toronto, keeping the O’s a game up on Detroit for the second Wild Card spot.

Thursday’s List of 13: NFL knowledge to ponder

13) Minnesota Vikings are 3-0, despite scoring only three offensive TDs, tied with Houston for fewest in NFL. Vikings’ defense scored two TDs in the Tennessee game and ran a punt back for a score last week- you look at their offensive stats and wonder how the hell they’re 3-0, but they are.

12) Giants’ first three games were decided by total of six points; they were minus in turnovers all three games (-6) but the defense has forced 12 field goal tries, while allowing only four TDs, so they’ve been tough in the red zone.

11) Eagles had a great first three weeks, but have their bye this week, much like the Bengals two years ago, when they started the season 3-0, had their bye week……..then went 0-2-1 in their next three games. Momentum is a funny thing; you want to keep playing when things are going well.

10) 49ers have gone 3/out 17 times on 35 drives, most in NFL; Rams are next (15 of 34). Oakland/Atlanta have gone 3/out fewest times (three each).
Carolina has forced opponents to go 3/out 17 times on 34 drives, most in NFL; Texans are next, with 15 on 37 drives. Strangely, Patriots/Steelers have forced the fewest 3/outs (four each).

9) Falcons (7.0), Raiders (6.7) Redskins (6.5) are averaging the most yards per play. Rams/49ers (4.4 each) are last in yards/play, followed by Texans/Vikings (4.6).

8) Colts/Jets have allowed three TDs by defense/special teams, most in NFL. Saints, Bucs and Titans allowed two each. Minnesota scored three on defense/special teams, most in the league.

7) Colts play in London this week; usually the teams that play in London have their bye week the next week, but Indy requested that not happen this year, so I’ll be curious to see how they do next week, after so much travelling this week.

6) Buffalo Bills are only team in league two TD plays of 50+ yards this season. Jets have allowed three TDs of 50+ yards, most in NFL.

5) Colts have nine TDs thru three games, all on drives of 75+ yards, most in NFL. Chiefs have only one TD drive of 75+ yards in their first three games. Atlanta has allowed 12 TDs, all on drives of 75+ yards. Not good.

2) Cowboys (21 of 40), Lions (20 of 39) are only two teams converting more than half their 3rd down plays. Bills (10 of 36), Jaguars (12 of 42) have converted the lowest percentage on 3rd down.

1) Panthers/Bucs (218 each) have run the most plays this month, with Texans 3rd at 211. Bills (159), Bears (168) and Vikings (172) have run the fewest plays from scrimmage.

LEADING OFF: Ortiz plays last game at Yankee Stadium
September 28, 2016

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

KISS IT GOODBYE

David Ortiz says so long to Yankee Stadium when the AL East-champion Red Sox finish a three-game series against their longtime rivals. New York, which is trying to hold off postseason elimination, has planned a pregame ceremony, but how will Yankees fans salute the 40-year-old slugger who has tormented their team with so many clutch hits? Will they boo him heartily one more time or give him an ovation out of respect? Big Papi, set to retire after the season, has said he'd like to be applauded by New York fans as part of his farewell. During the first two games of the series, he received mostly a mixture of boos and cheers.

WILD CHASE

The four chief contenders for the two AL wild-card spots are in action. Toronto holds the first spot and takes on second-place Baltimore at home , with Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman (9-9, 4.34) facing righty Ubaldo Jimenez (7-12, 5.71). In Detroit, Daniel Norris (3-2, 3.59) leads the Tigers into the finale of a series with AL Central-winning Cleveland. Detroit is 5-1 in Norris' last six starts. Then in Seattle, Robinson Cano and the Mariners try to gain ground when they open a series against Oakland. Cano's career-best 36th homer lifted Seattle over Houston on Wednesday .

In the NL, the wild card-leading Mets get a day off, giving the Cardinals and Giants a chance to gain ground. Hard-throwing rookie Alex Reyes (4-1, 1.58) makes his fifth start for St. Louis in a game against Cincinnati. Last time out, he ended his streak of 11 1/3 scoreless innings but still got the win behind five innings of three-run ball against the Cubs. In San Francisco, right-hander Johnny Cueto (17-5, 2.79) takes on Colorado's Jon Gray (10-9, 4.54). Cueto threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings against the Dodgers in his last start, while Gray has totaled 26 strikeouts over his previous two outings.

NICKED-UP NATS

The Nationals are hoping for sunshine and the return of Bryce Harper in a game against the Diamondbacks. Rain cut short their game Wednesday night and also gave Washington incentive to sit Harper for a third straight game with an injured right thumb. ''With the rain, you'd hate for his thumb to feel OK and then he gets hurt doing something else,'' manager Dusty Baker said. The Nats are already without catcher Wilson Ramos for the rest of the season because of a torn right ACL, and second baseman Daniel Murphy has been out of the starting lineup since Sept. 20 because of a strained left buttocks.

REMARKABLE ROOKIE

Dodgers rookie Julio Urias (5-2, 3.53) finishes his first regular season in the majors with a start against San Diego. Despite only turning 20 in August, Urias has played a key role while NL West-winning Los Angeles has dealt with numerous pitching injuries. The lefty has 79 strikeouts, the most by a pitcher his age-19 season since Dwight Gooden had 276 in 1984.
