Some notable deaths of active MLB players
September 25, 2016

A look at some of the notable deaths of active Major League Baseball players in recent years.

- Oct. 26, 2014:
Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras was killed in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic, along with his girlfriend. Earlier in the month, Taveras had homered in the NL playoffs. Dominican officials said Taveras, 22, was legally intoxicated when his car ran into a tree.

- April 9, 2009: Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22, was killed in a car crash hours after pitching six shutout innings in Anaheim against the Athletics. Two of Adenhart's friends also were killed. A man who was on probation for felony drunken driving was sentenced to 51 years to life in prison. Prosecutors said the driver's blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit when he ran a red light and hit the car carrying Adenhart and three friends.

- April 29, 2007: Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock, a 29-year-old reliever, was killed when his SUV hit the back of a tow truck parked on a highway to help a driver from another accident. Authorities determined Hancock's blood-alcohol level was nearly twice Missouri's legal limit and that he was going 68 mph in a 55 mph zone and talking on his cellphone when the crash occurred.

- Oct. 11, 2006: Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was killed when his small plane crashed into a Manhattan high-rise apartment building. The accident came four days after New York lost in the AL playoffs. The 34-year-old Lidle had gotten his pilot's license earlier in the year. His flight instructor also was killed in the crash, and the National Transportation Safety Board said it couldn't be determined who was at the controls at the time.

- Feb. 17, 2003: Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, 23, died a day after collapsing during a spring training workout in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A medical examiner said the diet supplement ephedra was partly to blame for Bechler's death.

- June 22, 2002: Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile died in his hotel room in Chicago from a blockage of the arteries supplying the heart. The 33-year-old's body was found after he wasn't at Wrigley Field for a game.

- March 1993: Indians pitchers Steve Olin, 27, and Tim Crews, 31, were killed when their power boat hit a dock at night on Little Lake Nellie, near Cleveland's spring training camp in central Florida. Pitcher Bob Ojeda was injured in the crash. Investigators determined that Crews, who was driving the boat, had a blood-alcohol level over the state's legal limit.

- Aug. 2, 1979: Yankees catcher Thurman Munson was killed when the plane he was piloting crashed near Ohio's Akron-Canton Airport. The 32-year-old team captain had gone home for a day and was practicing landings and takeoffs. Two passengers in the plane survived.

- Sept. 23, 1978: Angels outfielder Lyman Bostock, 27, had gone to visit relatives in Gary, Indiana, after a game in Chicago and was riding in a car when he was killed by a shotgun blast intended for someone else in the vehicle.

- Dec. 31, 1972: Pirates outfielder Roberto Clemente, 38, was killed when a plane carrying relief supplies for earthquake victims in Nicaragua crashed on its way from Puerto Rico. Clemente had gotten his 3,000th and final hit in his last at-bat of the regular season. He was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1973 in a special election.

Marlins P Fernandez dies in accident
September 25, 2016

MIAMI (AP) Jose Fernandez, the ace right-hander for the Miami Marlins who escaped Cuba to become one of baseball's brightest stars, was killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning. Fernandez was 24.

He and two other people died when their 32-foot vessel slammed into a jetty off Miami Beach, authorities said.

"We are devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández," the Marlins said in a statement.

Reaction quickly poured in from around the game. Major League Baseball released a statement saying it was "stunned and devastated."

"He was one of our game's great young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life."

The Marlins' game Sunday at home against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled. The Braves, along with several other teams, quickly shared their condolences with the Marlins.

"Hands down one of my favorite guys to watch pitch! He brought nothing but intensity and passion," Boston Red Sox pitcher David Price said on Twitter early Sunday.

Because the boat was on a jetty, the Coast Guard notified Miami-Dade police, which turned the investigation over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Fernandez was on a 32-foot vessel that had a "severe impact" with a jetty, said FWC's Lorenzo Veloz. The overturned boat remained in the water Sunday morning, its engine partially submerged as its nose pointed skyward, as debris from the crash was scattered over some of the large jagged rocks.

Fernandez's death immediately brought memories of past baseball tragedies, such as the deaths of Thurman Munson and Roberto Clemente - stars who died in plane crashes in the 1970s.

Cleveland teammates Steve Olin and Tim Crews were killed in a boating accident in Florida in 1993, and the game also reeled from the sudden deaths of major leaguers Darryl Kile, Lyman Bostock and Cory Lidle in recent years.

"Jose was a remarkable young man and a tremendously gifted athlete, who, at just 24, established himself as one of the game's biggest and brightest stars," said Tony Clark, the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jose's family, friends, teammates, Miami Marlins organization and legions of fans in the United States and Latin America."

The Miami Dolphins said they would have a moment of silence before their game in nearby Miami Gardens on Sunday afternoon to remember Fernandez.

City of Miami Fire-Rescue workers were seen carrying bodies, draped and on stretchers, at the Coast Guard station after sunrise Sunday. Officials later said they were taken to the medical examiner's office. Two bodies were found under the vessel and a third was found on the jetty, said Capt. Leonel Reyes of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Marine Services Bureau.

The names of the other two individuals are being withheld pending notification of relatives, the Coast Guard said.

"It does appear that speed was involved due to the impact and the severity of it," said Veloz, the FWC spokesman. "It does appear to be that they were coming at full speed when they encountered the jetty, and the accident happened."

Veloz said there was no immediate indication that alcohol or drugs were a cause in the crash. He also said none of the three victims wore a life jacket, and that the boat was owned by a friend of Fernandez's.

"It does pertain to a friend of Jose who is very well connected with several Marlins players and I have stopped that boat before for safety inspections with other Marlins players on board," Veloz said. "We know that this boat knows the area. We just can't answer why this happened."

Fernandez was a two-time All-Star who went 38-17 in his four seasons with the Marlins, winning the NL's Rookie of the Year award in 2013. The native of Santa Clara, Cuba became a U.S. citizen last year and was enormously popular in Miami.

He tried to defect from Cuba at least three times - landing in jail after one of those unsuccessful tries - before eventually getting to the U.S. and going to high school in Tampa, Florida. The Marlins drafted him in 2011 and Fernandez was in the majors two years later.

"I'm still in shock," former Marlins player Gaby Sanchez said on Twitter. "The world has lost a remarkable person. You will be missed and my heart goes out to the Fernandez family."

Video boards at Marlins Park on Sunday morning showed a large "16" - Fernandez's jersey number - over his name. A few fans milled about, even though the game was canceled.

Fernandez posted a photo of his girlfriend sporting a "baby bump" on his Instagram page last week, announcing that the couple were expecting their first child.

"I'm so glad you came into my life," Fernandez wrote in that post. "I'm ready for where this journey is gonna take us together."

MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Cleveland Clincher?

The Cleveland Indians blew a chance to secure their first division title in eight years at Progressive Field on Sunday, so they'll have to do it on the road.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this week, including the Cleveland Indians who roll into Detroit to take on the Tigers with a champagne party on their minds.

Cleveland Clincher?

The Cleveland Indians blew a chance to secure their first division title in eight years at Progressive Field on Sunday, so they'll have to do it on the road. That quest begins Monday as the Indians kick off a four-game series with the only team that can stand in the way of the AL Central crown - the Detroit Tigers, who are a full seven games back. Cleveland only needs one more win or a Detroit loss over the final seven games for its first division championship in nine years. And that should happen at some point during this series, with the Indians having beaten the Tigers in 13 of their first 15 meetings this season. Detroit does have the edge in units won, accumulating $1,214 to the Indians' $692.

Worst in the West

Nothing but pride will be on the line this week in Anaheim as the Los Angeles Angels host the Oakland Athletics in a three-game series. Both teams had high hopes for the 2016 season, but injuries and poor performances have relegated both rosters to the basement of the American League West. The Angels have lost the third-most units in the AL (-$1,296), with the Athletics only marginally better (-$1,292). The teams have combined to produce just two winning months all season; at 10-12 in September, the Angels have a slightly better shot at accomplishing the feat than Oakland (9-12). The Angels come into the series with a 9-7 edge over the Athletics in the season series.

Over and Out

The hottest Over play over the past 30 games takes on the best Over option of the season as the Kansas City Royals entertain the Minnesota Twins in a three-game series beginning Tuesday night. The Royals have taken part in some high-scoring affairs, going 22-7-1 O/U since Aug. 28 - capped by a 12-9 slugfest victory over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon. It has been that way all season for the Twins, who are a stunning 92-56-8 O/U - easily the most Overs in baseball. The Twins secured their place as the only 100-loss team in the majors with Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The teams opened their season series with three straight Unders, but are 9-3-1 O/U since.

Injury Update

* The Houston Astros remain in the American League wild card race despite losing promising rookie infielder Alex Bregman for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury. The Astros have gone 6-4 SU for 110 units in Bregman's absence, going 4-6 O/U in that span.

* The Tampa Bay Rays' struggles without Steven Souza Jr. continue, as he misses the remainder of the season with a hip injury. The Rays have lost five of six for -$400 since Souza was ruled out for the year, and are an abysmal 5-21 for -$1,645 without Souza on the year.

Hitting Notes

* David Ortiz is having the best final season in the history of baseball. With one week left in his amazing career, the 40-year-old Boston Red Sox designated hitter is batting .321 with 37 home runs and 121 RBIs; his 5.1 WAR (per Baseball Reference) is his highest tally since 2007.

* The Atlanta Braves' season was a disappointment, but Freddie Freeman isn't content to let it end on a sour note. The Braves first baseman is slashing a red-hot .405/.495/.709 so far in September, with five home runs, nine doubles, 21 RBIs and 15 walks in 79 at-bats.

Pitching Notes

* Can Dan Straily beat astronomical odds and wind up the top money pitcher in the majors? Straily has his chance Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals; the veteran right-hander comes into the start at +$1,577, with the disappointing Reds going 20-10 in his starts.

* If Lance McCullers is done for the season, he will go down as the one of the top Under starters in the majors - albeit in limited time. McCullers made just 14 regular-season starts, but he provided plenty of value to totals bettors, going 2-12 O/U in those games.

Totals Trend

Camden Yards isn't thought of as an offense-suppressing park, but bettors might suggest otherwise. The Orioles went 1-9-1 O/U on their most recent 11-game homestand that wrapped up with a 2-1 win over Arizona on Sunday; they finished 26-51-4 O/U at home on the season.

LEADING OFF: Marlins home for 1st game since Fernandez death
September 26, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

SADNESS

The Miami Marlins play for the first time since 24-year-old pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident. Popular and productive, Fernandez had been scheduled to start this game at home against the Mets. There were tributes at Marlins Park and all around the majors after he died early Sunday.

HARPER CHECK

Washington star Bryce Harper is getting X-rays on his left thumb. The reigning NL MVP was hurt Sunday on an awkward slide after Pittsburgh third baseman Jung Ho Kang made a fake tag. Harper had surgery to repair a torn ligament in the same thumb in 2014. The NL East champion Nationals host Arizona.

CLINCH CLUB

The Cleveland Indians can wrap up their first AL Central championship since 2007 with a win at Comerica Park. Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber goes for his career-high 19th win. He's 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA against Detroit this season. The Tigers are 1 1/2 games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild-card spot.

ACE APP

J.A. Happ tries for his 21st win when Toronto hosts the Yankees. The Blue Jays lead the AL wild-card chase by 1 1/2 games over the Orioles, thanks in big part to Happ (20-4). Luis Severino (3-8) starts for New York.

BACK AGAIN

Sonny Gray will come off the disabled list to make his first start in nearly two months for Oakland. The 26-year-old righty hasn't pitched in a game since Aug. 6 because of a strained forearm.

MIAMI (AP) Dee Gordon and the Miami Marlins wore their emotions on the sleeves of their No. 16 jerseys.

Jose Fernandez would have loved it.

Gordon homered leading off the first inning for the Marlins, who totaled 14 hits and mixed cheers with the tears of the past two days by beating the New York Mets 7-3 on Monday night in their first game since Fernandez died in a boating accident.

Adam Conley pitched three scoreless innings subbing for Fernandez, who had been scheduled to make his final start of the year. Justin Bour went 3 for 3 and Gordon had four hits, including one that will go down in Marlins lore.

Paying tribute to their charismatic ace, the left-handed-hitting Gordon stepped to the plate as a righty leading off the first. After one pitch, Gordon switched to his customary left side - and pulled a 2-0 delivery into the upper deck for his first homer of the season.

New York's Bartolo Colon (14-8) allowed a season-high seven runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Mike Dunn (5-1) pitched a perfect fourth for the win.

New York still leads the NL wild-card race with five games to go.

INDIANS 7, TIGERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Cleveland clinched the AL Central title, overcoming an injury to ace right-hander Corey Kluber in a victory over Detroit.

Kluber left after four innings with right groin tightness, joining Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar in a group of talented Cleveland pitchers dealing with injuries. But even those concerns were secondary when the Indians poured onto the field to celebrate their first division title since 2007.

Buck Farmer (0-1) allowed four runs in five innings for the Tigers, who fell two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card.

Andrew Miller (10-1) won in relief, and Cody Allen pitched the ninth for his 30th save in 33 chances.

MARINERS 4, ASTROS 3, 11 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) - Robinson Cano hit his second homer of the game with two outs in the 11th inning, lifting Seattle over Houston.

Houston scored two runs in the ninth, but then Cano sent a slider from Luke Gregerson (4-3) into the second deck in right field to win.

The victory moves Seattle two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card and drops Houston, which has lost four of five, to 3 1/2 games back in the race

Drew Storen (4-3) pitched a perfect 10th for the win. Nick Vincent allowed consecutive singles to Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa before retiring the next two batters for his third save.

CUBS 12, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Javier Baez hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs while major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks pitched six scoreless innings, and Chicago won its 100th game of the season.

Baez helped the NL Central-champion Cubs reach triple digits in victories for the first time since 1935.

Hendricks (16-8) dropped his ERA to 1.99 by scattering seven hits, striking out five and walking none. He has not allowed more than three runs in 22 consecutive starts.

The Pirates entered the day 4 + games out of the second NL wild card with seven games to play.

Rookie Chad Kuhl (5-4) was rocked for five runs and eight hits in three innings.

DIAMONDBACKS 14, NATIONALS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos left Washington's loss to Arizona with an apparent right knee injury that could be a major blow to the NL East champions.

Ramos landed awkwardly on his right leg after jumping to catch a relay throw in the sixth inning. He immediately called for medical attention and clutched at the same knee he injured badly during the 2012 season, when he tore his ACL and medial collateral ligament.

Washington was already without reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper due to a thumb injury, slugging second baseman Daniel Murphy (strained glute) and 15-game winner Stephen Strasburg (elbow).

This loss left the Nationals one game ahead of the Dodgers for home-field advantage in the series.

Tanner Roark (15-10) allowed five runs in four innings.

Zack Godley (5-4) got the win behind three scoreless innings in relief.

YANKEES 7, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO (AP) - Mark Teixeira hit a tying homer in the ninth inning and Aaron Hicks added a winning blast as New York avoided a four-game sweep.

Leading 3-2 heading to the ninth, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons called on Jason Grilli (7-6) to close it out because Roberto Osuna was unavailable after pitching the previous two days.

Teixeira tied it 3-all with a one-out drive into the second deck drive in right. Didi Gregorius singled and Hicks followed with a two-run homer.

Tommy Layne wrapped up his first save by getting Troy Tulowitzki to foul out. Adam Warren (4-2) got the win behind two perfect innings.

BREWERS 8, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jonathan Villar had two home runs and a career-high five RBIs, and Matt Garza beat his former team.

The loss dropped AL West-champion Texas a half-game behind Boston in the race for the league's best record. The Cleveland Indians pulled within a half-game of the Rangers.

Garza (6-8) allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. Rangers starter Martin Perez (10-11) was looking to set a career high for wins in a season.

REDS 15, CARDINALS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Joey Votto and Adam Duvall hit two of Cincinnati's four homers in a rout of St. Louis.

Reds starter Tim Adleman (3-4) retired the first 10 Cardinals he faced and went a career-long seven innings. It was his first win since Aug. 19.

Jaime Garcia (10-13) lasted just one inning in the shortest outing of his career.

WHITE SOX 7, RAYS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - James Shields pitched six effective innings for his first win in two months, Justin Morneau and Carlos Sanchez each hit a two-run homer and Chicago beat Tampa Bay.

Shields (6-18) allowed one run and seven hits, using six strikeouts to help wriggle out of several jams and help Chicago win its third straight.

Tampa Bay's Drew Smyly (7-12) allowed three runs and seven hits over five innings in losing for the first time since July 18 at Colorado.

Tuesday’s six-pack

Six of the more interesting college football games this weekend:

— Stanford @ Washington (-3)– Interesting game in Pac-12 North

— Wisconsin @ Michigan (-10.5)– Badgers not getting much respect.

— Louisville (-1) @ Clemson– Huge game in the ACC.

— Arizona State @ USC (-9)– Trojans favored by 9.5? Really?

— Oklahoma (-3.5) @ TCU– Big game for young Horned Frogs.

— Oregon (-1) @ Washington State– Sadly, this is on Pac-12 Network.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) Very sad night in Miami Monday, Marlins’ first game since passing of its star pitcher, 24-year old Jose Fernandez. Every Miami player wore his #16 jersey during the game; the Marlins will now retire his number 16.

Before and during the game, players were crying on the field; Dee Gordon led off the bottom of the first inning with a homer and sobbed all the way around the bases.

Life is short, my friends. Lets enjoy it while we can.

12) Winner of golf’s Fed Ex Cup wins $10M; how much does his caddy get?

11) Cleveland Browns are first team since ’86-’87 Falcons to start five different QBs in a five-game stretch. Atlanta’s stretch is a little bogus, since it included the first replacement game they played in ’87, when players were striking and were replaced by inferior players.

Manziel-Davis-Griffin III-McCown-Kessler are your five Browns’ QBs. If they start Pryor at QB this week, it would be six games with six QBs.

10) Here is how stupid I was as a little kid: for about a month, my career goal was to be an architect.

Why? Because Wilbur Post (on Mr Ed) and Mr Brady on the Brady Bunch were both architects, and they never seemed to do much work. It is possible that I watched (and still watch) too much TV.

9) Another one that slipped by me: until yesterday, I had absolutely no idea that Angelina Jolie is Jon Voight’s daughter.

8) ESPN’s Brock Huard is one of the better football analysts on TV; he was telling a story Saturday about how when he was a backup QB with the Colts, offensive coordinator Tom Moore had Peyton Manning run the same running play 15 times in a row, because the other team couldn’t stop it. Makes sense. Sometimes simple is better.

7) NFL players who get taunting penalties are fined $9,115– that seems excessive. Seriously. I must say though, if somebody fined me $9,115 for taunting, I’d shut my damn mouth.

6) One huge difference in officiating between NFL and college; very few penalties called on defensive backs in college. In pro games, a DB can’t breathe on a guy without getting a flag.

5) Texas Rangers are 13-0 in last 13 games where winning run scored from 7th inning on; they’re 36-11 in one-run games.

4) LSU fired football coach Les Miles and OC Cam Cameron Sunday; Miles won an awful lot of games (and a national title) in Baton Rouge, but his inability to develop a balanced offense ticked off the wrong people and he got fired. His biggest problem was being at LSU at the same time Nick Saban was at Alabama.

Miles went 114-34 at LSU and got fired!!!! Tough crowd in Baton Rouge.

3) St Louis Cardinals are 6-15 this season in games following a day off.

2) Brian Kelly fired his defensive coordinator Sunday, which was lost in the bundle of other news during the day. Little early to be firing coaches.

Notre Dame was the last I-A college football team out of 128 to get a sack this season- that’s hard to believe, but it is true. They said it on TV, so it has to be true, right?

1– Michigan pounded Penn State Saturday, but Jim Harbaugh has some explaining to do to the folks at Nike who pay his program a small fortune to wear the Swoosh– some genius on Twitter had a pic of Harbaugh Saturday, zoomed in on it and realized he was wearing an adidas belt.

Not good.

That might not seem like much to you or me, but I guarantee you the fine folks at Nike are not amused. Michael Jordan even made an appearance in Ann Arbor as an “honorary captain” for Michigan game earlier this month, that is how much Nike covets having the Wolverines endorse its brand. Maybe MJ can send Harbaugh some Nike belts.

Nike belts sell for anywhere from $20-70 a pop on the their website.

LEADING OFF: Red Sox can clinch as Papi begins Bronx goodbye
September 26, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

BOSTON POPS?

It's a big night in the Bronx for David Ortiz and the streaking Red Sox. Playoff-bound Boston can clinch the AL East title with a win or a Toronto loss as Big Papi begins his final three-game series at Yankee Stadium. The 40-year-old slugger, set to retire after this season, has said he'd like to be cheered by New York fans as part of his farewell. Meanwhile, left-hander David Price (17-8) goes for his ninth consecutive victory as Boston seeks its 12th straight overall.

LIMPING TOWARD OCTOBER

The playoff-bound Indians and Nationals nervously await word on injured players critical to their postseason aspirations. Cleveland ace Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14 ERA) left his start Monday night after four innings because of right groin tightness, yet the Indians beat Detroit to clinch their first AL Central crown in nine years. The Cy Young Award contender has won 10 of his last 11 decisions for a team already dealing with injuries to pitchers Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar.

Meanwhile, Washington catcher Wilson Ramos apparently injured his right knee Monday and had to be helped off the field by trainers. He clutched at his knee after landing awkwardly on it - he tore the ACL and medial collateral ligament in that knee in 2012. Ramos entered Monday batting .307 with 22 homers and 80 RBIs for the NL East champs.

KIDS IN A BIG SPOT

The Blue Jays and Orioles begin a pivotal three-game series in Toronto that could bring some clarity to the AL wild-card race. Both teams will turn to young, emerging pitchers in Game 1. Baltimore right-hander Kevin Gausman (8-11, 3.57 ERA) is 6-3 with a 2.57 ERA since Aug. 1. Toronto's Aaron Sanchez (13-2, 3.12) has a 4.54 ERA in seven starts since Aug. 1, though he most recently threw six innings of one-run ball against Seattle.

STILL IN IT

Felix Hernandez (11-6) pitches for the Mariners at Houston in a matchup of AL West teams still clinging to wild-card hopes. Both clubs are chasing Baltimore for the league's final playoff berth. Mike Fiers (11-8) gets the ball for the Astros.
