Gordon homers leading off as Marlins mourn Fernandez
September 26, 2016

MIAMI (AP) In tribute to Jose Fernandez, left-handed hitter Dee Gordon stepped to the plate as a righty to lead off the first inning of Monday's mournful game.

After one pitch, Gordon switched to his customary left side - and homered in the first at-bat for Miami since the death of Fernandez in a boating accident.

Gordon pulled a 2-0 pitch from New York Mets right-hander Bartolo Colon over the wall in right for his first homer of the season. He tapped his chest after crossing the plate and waved toward the sky, and then sobbed as teammates hugged him in the dugout.

It was another heart-tugging moment in a succession of them over the past two days. The Marlins went on to a 7-3 victory.

The atmosphere was funereal at Marlins Park three hours before the first pitch, with players going through their pregame stretching in eerie silence.

Then someone cranked up the sound system, and bouncy reggaeton reverberated throughout the ballpark. It was a nudge toward a return to normal, as the Marlins and baseball began to move on without Fernandez.

The animal race at the end of the fifth inning was canceled, along with other in-game entertainment, and most of the Marlins' hitters decided to forgo walk-up music. But there was a game against the Mets, the first for the Marlins since their ace died early Sunday.

''This is shallow, but the show goes on,'' Marlins president David Samson said. ''There has been a lot of talking and a lot of crying and a lot of praying and a lot of trying to make sense of something you can't make sense of. There is no sense to a life ended like that, in a way that is so meaningless.

''It's our job to make his life matter, so we're going to do that forever, and forever starts today.''

Fernandez made his major league debut against the Mets in 2013 and was scheduled to face them again Monday night in his final start of the season. Instead, Miami and the Marlins mourned the loss of the 24-year-old pitcher, whose talent and captivating personality were a combination unmatched in the sport.

Fernandez and two other men were killed when his 32-foot SeaVee slammed into a rock jetty that extends off the southern tip of Miami Beach at about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, a medical examiner said.

Fernandez was originally scheduled to pitch Sunday before his start was moved back a day. The change may be the reason he decided to go on the late-night boat outing.

''If he had pitched yesterday, maybe fate would be different,'' Samson said. ''I've been thinking about that a lot.''

Manager Don Mattingly said, ''Obviously it crosses your mind.''

The Marlins' game Sunday against Atlanta was canceled, and when they took the field Monday for batting practice, Fernandez's name and number hovered over the field on the huge video screen. Gordon wore a T-shirt that said ''RIP,'' with a photo of Fernandez shaped as the ''I.''

For the game, the players decided to wear Fernandez's No. 16, with hastily made uniforms flown in. His number was also stenciled on the back of the mound.

The pregame ceremony included a slow, solemn solo trumpet rendition of ''Take Me Out to the Ballgame.'' Following the national anthem, New York manager Terry Collins led his Mets across the field to share hugs with the Marlins, and fans briefly chanted ''Jose, Jose.''

The Marlins then clustered around the mound and put their hands to the dirt. Some scratched out Jose's number or a message of love, and some just rubbed the mound - his mound. His career record at Marlins Park was 29-2.

Fans established a makeshift memorial on the plaza outside the ballpark entrance, leaving dozens of flower arrangements - daisies, carnations, roses and lilies, the result as colorful as Fernandez's personality. There were also candles, and messages scrawled on balls, balloons, photos and jerseys.

The situation was emotional even for the Mets, who are in the thick of the chase for an NL wild card with one week left in the season. On their dugout wall hung a Mets jerseys with Fernandez's name and number.

''Hearts are heavy,'' New York outfielder Jay Bruce said. ''From a professional standpoint, you just try to prepare and play the game and respect the game. But I can't even imagine what it's like over in that other clubhouse.''

Collins spoke about Fernandez in the present tense.

''He epitomizes what the game's about,'' Collins said. ''Our game is bigger than a lot of things. It will always go on. We'll remember Jose. You've got to play the game in his honor. He would want to be out there.''

Plans for a public funeral had not been finalized, but it was expected to be Thursday, the Marlins' final off day of the season.

Fernandez defected from Cuba at age 15, won the NL Rookie of the Year award and became a two-time All-Star. His enormous popularity in South Florida bridged the divide between the franchise and fans antagonized by too much losing and too many payroll purges.

Fernandez left behind a girlfriend who is expecting their first child, the mother who came with him to the United States and the grandmother who helped raise him.

On Sunday evening, the entire team took two buses to Fernandez's family home and met for 45 minutes with his mother, grandmother and other relatives and friends.

Fernandez's agent, Scott Boras, spoke to reporters near the batting cage - or at least tried to. He said he paid his respects to the family before coming to the ballpark.

''His mother wanted me to tell everyone how she felt,'' Boras said. ''She showed me pictures of him as a boy. She actually made his uniform when he was 7 or 8, with Cuban red pants.''

Boras then cut short the interview because he couldn't stop crying.

Hottest team: Red Sox (11-0 last 11)

It’s been awhile since Boston has lost, coming off three consecutive sweeps over New York, Baltimore, and Tampa Bay. The Red Sox won a pair of one-run contests at Tropicana Field this past weekend to keep their winning streak alive, while allowing two runs or less in five of the previous seven victories. Boston is still looking to seize home-field advantage in the American League, holding a half-game lead over Texas and one-game advantage over Cleveland heading into tonight’s action. The Sox travel to the Bronx to face the Yankees, as Boston owns a 7-3 record at Yankee Stadium this season.

Coldest team: Rockies (1-6 last seven)

Colorado has stumbled down the stretch, while getting swept this past weekend at Los Angeles. The Rockies allowed 30 runs in the four losses, as Colorado has dropped seven straight games away from Coors Field. Colorado has lost four of seven matchups at San Francisco this season, while splitting the past six meetings with the Giants since July. The Rockies are riding an 0-6 skid in their previous six road series openers as rookie German Marquez makes his second career start, coming off a victory over the Cardinals in his previous outing.

Hottest pitcher: David Price, Red Sox (17-8, 3.91 ERA)

It’s hard to find a pitcher in the game that is performing better than Price, as the Sox have won nine consecutive starts made by the former Cy Young winner. Price’s worst outing in this stretch came against the Yankees 10 days ago at Fenway Park, allowing five earned runs in six innings, but Boston escaped with a 6-5 victory. Boston is riding a five-game winning streak in Price’s previous five starts away from Fenway Park, but the southpaw has lost his two outings at Yankee Stadium this season.

Coldest pitcher: Chris Sale, White Sox (16-9, 3.19 ERA)

The second half of the season has been a nightmare for Sale, winning two decisions in his previous 12 starts since the All-Star break. Sale was knocked around by the Phillies in his last outing, giving up six earned runs in four innings of an 8-3 defeat as a -155 road favorite. The Chicago southpaw hasn’t fared well at home of late as the White Sox are 1-4 in his past five outings at U.S. Cellular Field, in spite of tossing at least eight innings in his previous four home starts. The only good news for Sale is he shut out the Rays the last time he faced them in mid-April, scattering two hits and striking out nine.

Biggest UNDER run: Orioles (9-0 last nine)

After getting swept at home by the Red Sox, the Baltimore pitching staff stepped up against Arizona by allowing a total of four runs in a three-game sweep this past weekend. On the flip side, the Orioles’ lineup hasn’t been productive of late by scoring three runs or fewer in eight of the past nine games, resulting in nine consecutive UNDERS. The last four matchups between the Orioles and Blue Jays have gone UNDER the total, while four of the past six road games for Baltimore have finished UNDER the total.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (6-0 last six)

To say Philadelphia is playing out the string is an understatement, as the Phillies are coming off an embarrassing 17-0 drubbing at the hands of the Mets on Sunday. Philadelphia dropped three of four at New York this past weekend, while the Phillies’ staff allowed 44 runs in the four games. Excusing the 17-run loss on Sunday, the Phillies’ offense has been somewhat productive down the stretch, scoring at least five runs in each of the previous five games prior to Sunday. Jerad Eickhoff hits the mound for Philadelphia tonight at Atlanta, as the Phillies’ right-hander has given up only two earned runs to the Braves in his last three starts since late May.

Matchup to watch:
Orioles vs. Blue Jays

The two teams in the AL Wild Card race hook up for a crucial three-game series at Rogers Center. There is no shot at a division title for either of those two squads with Boston wrapping up the AL East championship, so the one-game Wild Card is the only route to the playoffs.

Toronto owns a one-game edge over Baltimore heading into Tuesday’s action, as the Blue Jays hope to secure home-field advantage in the AL Wild Card game next week. The Jays couldn’t pull off the sweep of the Yankees, losing to New York last night, 7-5, but Toronto has won five of its past seven games after dropping the final two contests to the Angels nine days ago. Aaron Sanchez has hit a bump in the road of late for Toronto, as the Jays are 0-3 in his past three starts, in spite of one-run losses to the Mariners and Yankees in this stretch.

Kevin Gausman counters for Baltimore, as the Orioles are fresh off a three-game home sweep of the Diamondbacks. Gausman was knocked around in his past outing against the Red Sox, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs in 6.1 innings of a 5-2 home defeat. The Orioles haven’t had much luck when Gausman pitches away from Camden Yards, compiling a 5-11 record this season on the road, including an 0-2 mark at Rogers Center.

Betcha didn’t know: The Cubs reached the 100-win plateau in last night’s blowout of the Pirates, as John Lackey heads to the mound tonight for Chicago. Lackey has been fortunate recently as seven of his past eight starts have come at Wrigley Field. The Cubs own a 1-4 record in Lackey’s previous five road starts since late June, but the lone victory came at PNC Park against the Pirates in a 6-5 win on July 10.

Biggest public favorite: Cardinals (-230) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog: Pirates (+145) vs. Cubs

Biggest line move: Phillies (+135 to +125) at Braves

TORONTO (AP) Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer, Aaron Sanchez struck out 10 and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Tuesday night in the opener of their AL wild-card showdown.

Ezequiel Carrera also homered as the Blue Jays won for the sixth time in eight games. They lead the wild-card standings by two games over the Orioles with five to play.

Baltimore leads Detroit by one game for the league's final playoff spot.

Orioles slugger Chris Davis was ejected for arguing with plate umpire Will Little after striking out against Joe Biagini in the seventh, the third time in three at-bats Davis was caught looking. Baltimore manager Buck Showalter also was tossed after he came out to argue.

Sanchez (14-2) struck out the first four hitters he faced and five of the first six.

Kevin Gausman (8-12) allowed five runs, four earned, and seven hits in six innings.

YANKEES 6, RED SOX 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Gary Sanchez, Didi Gregorius and Tyler Austin homered off David Price, and New York ended Boston's 11-game winning streak and delayed its AL East title celebration.

David Ortiz, starting his final series in the Bronx, went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts and stranded seven runners. He ended the game by fanning with two on against Tyler Clippard.

Having clinched at least a wild-card berth last weekend, Boston is five games ahead of second-place Toronto with five games left, needing just one victory or a Blue Jays loss to ensure the division championship.

Price (17-9) allowed six runs and 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Blake Parker (1-0) got two outs for his first victory since July 10, 2014 while with the Cubs. Clippard got his second save.

METS 12, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) - Noah Syndergaard struck out eight and allowed one run in six innings, and New York totaled 19 hits to beat grieving Miami.

Jay Bruce and Yoenis Cespedes each hit his 31st homer for the Mets, who began the game with a half-game lead over the Giants in the battle for the first NL wild card. The Cardinals are two games back of New York.

The game was the Marlins' second since the death of ace Jose Fernandez in a boating accident.

Syndergaard (14-9) threw 93 pitches after missing a scheduled start Saturday with strep throat and lowered his ERA to 2.60, third-best in the majors. He'll return to pitch the regular-season finale Sunday at Philadelphia if needed.

Tom Koehler (9-13) allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings.

ASTROS 8, MARINERS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - George Springer had three hits, including a two-run double during a six-run sixth inning, and Houston beat Seattle.

The victory leaves Seattle two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card and cuts Houston's deficit in the race to 2 1/2 games.

The Astros got five hits off Felix Hernandez (11-7) in the sixth, but only two of the six runs scored in the inning were earned because of two errors.

Rookie Jandel Gustave (1-0) yielded no hits and no runs with one walk in 1 1/3 innings for his first career win.

TIGERS 12, INDIANS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in five runs in the first two innings, and Justin Verlander struck out 12 to lift Detroit over a Cleveland lineup full of backups.

The Indians clinched the AL Central title Monday night in Detroit, and their starting lineup Tuesday was without Jason Kipnis, Francisco Lindor, Mike Napoli and Jose Ramirez. Detroit took full advantage, beating Cleveland for only the third time all year and pulling within a game of Baltimore for the AL's second wild card.

Verlander (16-8) went 7 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and a walk.

Mike Clevinger (2-3) lasted only two innings, allowing Cabrera's two-run double in the first and his three-run homer in the second.

CUBS 6, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Chris Coghlan hit a three-run triple and John Lackey worked in and out of trouble over five innings, helping Chicago beat reeling Pittsburgh.

Coghlan's second-inning drive off the wall in right-center against Ryan Vogelsong (3-7) gave the NL Central champions all the offense they would need to win for the seventh time in their last eight games. Chicago improved to 101-56, the club's highest victory total since it won 104 games in 1910.

Lackey (11-8) worked around five hits and three walks to win his last regular season start.

Felix Pena recorded the final two outs for his first career save.

NATIONALS 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Scherzer struck out 10 and allowed two runs in six innings and Anthony Rendon hit a go-ahead three-run homer as Washington beat Arizona to inch closer to home-field advantage in the NL Division Series.

Scherzer (19-7) was not at his Cy Young Award candidate best, uncharacteristically missing spots and allowing six hits, including a leadoff home run by Jean Segura.

After the Nationals didn't get a hit through five innings against Arizona starter Matt Koch, Rendon hit a three-run shot off Randall Delgado (4-2) with two outs in the sixth, his 19th of the season.

RANGERS 6, BREWERS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Jonathan Lucroy hit a go-ahead two-run double against his former team in the sixth inning to help Texas beat Milwaukee.

The Rangers have a half-game lead over Boston for the best record in the American League.

Lucroy's hit made a winner of reliever Tony Barnette (7-3).

Lucroy, who played six-plus seasons for the Brewers before being traded to the Rangers on Aug. 1, pulled a pitch from Jimmy Nelson (8-16) down the left-field line into the corner.

Sam Dyson earned his 37th save.

ROYALS 4, TWINS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Billy Burns' sacrifice fly scored Raul Mondesi in the 11th inning as Kansas City beat Minnesota, staving off postseason elimination.

The defending World Series champions are five games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card with five to play.

Rookie Brooks Pounders (2-1) picked up the victory. Left-hander Tommy Milone (3-5) was charged with the loss.

WHITE SOX 13, RAYS 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Melky Cabrera and Leury Garcia homered to back Chris Sale, and Chicago routed sloppy Tampa Bay.

Sale (17-9) allowed three runs and eight hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings.

Rays starter Alex Cobb (1-2) lasted three innings, allowing eight runs and eight hits in the Rays' fifth straight loss.

Wednesday’s six-pack

Six of the more interesting NFL games this weekend:

— Colts vs Jaguars (London)– 9:30am ET games are for the birds.

— Bills @ Patriots– Who plays QB for New England?

— Panthers @ Atlanta– Falcons’ offense is rolling.

— Saints @ San Diego– Drew Brees back in his old home.

— Rams @ Arizona– Big game in NFC West. Yes, a big game.

— Chiefs @ Pittsburgh– KC scored one TD in last two games.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

13) Tremendously odd baseball trivia: In the history of baseball, only one player has homered in his first AND last major league at-bat.

John Miller played in six games in 1966, 26 in 1969, that’s it; he went 10-61 in those 32 games with two homers, three RBI, three walks. His homers came in his first and last major league at-bats.

The only major league EVER to do that.

12) Detroit Lions got called for a 66-yard pass interference penalty in Green Bay Sunday, the longest PI penalty in at least 15 years.

11) Carolina Panthers have run the ball for 100+ yards in each of their last 30 games; the next-highest streak in the NFL is Dallas, with 7.

10) I like to track how the six most popular picks in the Westgate Super Contest fare each week; so far after three weeks, they’re 4-14 vs spread, including 0-6 in Week 3. Not good.

9) If your favorite NFL team is 0-3 (Saints-Jags-Browns-Bears), keep in mind that from 2002-15, 69 NFL teams were 0-3. None of them made the playoffs. San Diego did get to the Super Bowl once after an 0-4 start, but that was a long time ago.

8) Rams are 2-1 for the first time since 2006. Ten long years.

7) Florida International fired football coach Ron Turner, who is Norv Turner’s brother. FIU is 0-4 with three losses by 21+ points.

6) Mets were losing 10-8 in ninth inning the other day; TV analyst Keith Hernandez is adamant that hitters have to take a strike, since the closer for the Phillies has trouble throwing strikes. You could almost hear him biting his tongue when the leadoff hitter hit a fly ball to center on the first pitch, then the next hitter fouled off the first pitch.

Would’ve been interesting if Hernandez said what he was thinking after the first-pitch swings- he just grunted after the second one.

5) In their first three games, Indianapolis Colts were down 21-10, 13-6 and tied 13-13 at halftime. On their first drive of the third quarter, Indy has driven 85-79-75 yards for three touchdowns.

4) ESPN college football analyst Ed Cunningham had the Cal-Arizona State game in Tempe Saturday; he told a story of when he played offensive line for the Cardinals, he lost 14 pounds during an exhibition game in Sun Devil Stadium. That couldn’t have been a lot of fun.

3) Ivy League finally relented and will have a four-team basketball conference tournament in March. Only eight teams in the league; will be fun to see teams compete to get into the NCAA tournament.

2) Parents of Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter do a commercial for a sporting goods store on a St Louis TV station. Not sure how they came up with that idea, but it is a pretty cool commercial.

1– You think about how hard Jose Fernandez (and others) worked to get to this country from Cuba and how happy they appear to be here, getting paid to play a game they love.

Some of us have lost sight of how lucky we are to live in this country, not that it is a perfect place- there are no perfect places, but we’re free to do what we want and say what we think here and that isn’t true everywhere.

We need to tolerate each other more and enjoy our time here. We’re not guaranteed anything, that much we learned this past weekend.

LEADING OFF: Ortiz, Red Sox try again to clinch in New York
September 27, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

TRY AGAIN

David Ortiz and the playoff-bound Red Sox get their second chance to clinch the AL East title at Yankee Stadium. A victory over New York or a Toronto loss to Baltimore would do the trick. Boston's party was put on hold Tuesday night, when Big Papi came up uncharacteristically small in the clutch during a 6-4 defeat that snapped Boston's 11-game winning streak. Beginning his final series in the Bronx, Ortiz went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts and stranded seven runners. He ended the game by whiffing with two on against Tyler Clippard.

GETTING READY

Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta (18-7, 2.85 ERA) gets what likely will be his last full tuneup for the playoffs when Chicago visits Pittsburgh. Last year's NL Cy Young Award winner figures to slot in as the team's No. 3 postseason starter behind Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks. With veteran Miguel Montero back to catching him, Arrieta struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings last time out against St. Louis.

BIRD WATCHING

Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman (16-6, 3.84 ERA) faces Blue Jays lefty Francisco Liriano (8-13, 4.88) in the second game of their AL wild-card showdown. Toronto won the opener Tuesday night and is closing in on a playoff berth, leading the wild-card standings by two games over Baltimore with five to play. Manny Machado and the Orioles are still ahead of Detroit and Seattle for the league's final postseason spot. Tillman is 2-6 with a 7.51 ERA in 12 career starts at Toronto. Liriano pitched six shutout innings against the Yankees last Friday.

ROOKIE RACE

One night after Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez hit his 20th home run since coming up from the minors Aug. 3, Detroit pitcher Michael Fulmer (11-7, 2.95 ERA) gets perhaps his final chance to boost his own case for AL Rookie of the Year. With the Tigers still in the wild-card chase, Fulmer faces the AL Central champion Indians. Sanchez, meanwhile, matched Wally Berger in 1930 as the fastest major league player to 20 homers (51 career games).

BRIEF RETURN

Sonny Gray (5-11) will come off the disabled list to make his first start in nearly two months for Oakland. The 26-year-old righty hasn't pitched in a game since Aug. 6 because of a strained forearm. He is expected to be limited to one or two innings against the Angels.
