NCAAF Game of the Day: Connecticut at Houston
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

QB Greg Ward Jr. (936 passing yards, five touchdowns and 113 rushing yards, three TDs) leads a balanced offense that's averaging 44.8 points.

Connecticut Huskies at No. 7 Houston Cougars (-28, 51)

Seventh-ranked Houston gets a chance to avenge its only loss from last year when it hosts Connecticut in an American Athletic Conference game Thursday night. Both starting quarterbacks missed the majority of last year's meeting - a 20-17 UConn home victory- but return healthy for the rematch.

Houston's Greg Ward Jr., who didn't play at UConn because of an ankle injury until backup Kyle Postma was injured late in the fourth quarter, has won 17 straight as the Cougars' starter. The Cougars, looking to begin 5-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history, recorded at least 40 points and 500 total yards in three straight games. Bryant Shirreffs, who left last year's game with a concussion on the second series, helped the Huskies overcome slow starts in all four games. UConn has been outscored 31-0 in the first quarter this season before having all four games decided by seven or fewer points.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE HISTORY: Houston has drawn heavy chalk in this AAC matchup, hitting the board as 27.5-point home favorites and have been bet up to -28 since then. The total has also been bet up, going from its opening number of 50.5 to the current number of 51. Check out the complete line history here.

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "The majority of action on Houston, where we have almost 80 percent of the wagers, is from the square contingent. But we've had a couple of sharps hit the Cougars as well, which prompted the bump two points to -30. It feels like this could come down before it goes up."

INJURY REPORT:

Connecticut - RB N. Hopkins (probable Thursday, leg), OL B. Vechery (probable Thursday, leg), OL T. Rutherford (probable Thursday, undisclosed), LB J. Hicks (questionable Thursday, leg), OL T. Hopkins (questionable Thursday, leg), LB O. Stephens (questionable Thursday, leg), OL D. Oak (out Thursday, undisclosed).

Houston - CB B. Wilson (questionable Thursday, leg), OL M. Long (questionable Thursday, undisclosed), OL A. Fontana (questionable Thursday, elbow), RB M. Car (out Thursday, knee).

WEATHER REPORT:
It should be a beautiful night for football in Houston. The forecast is calling for clear skies with temperatures in the mid to low 70's for the game. There could be a seven to eight mile per hour wind blowing across the field from north to south.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (2-2, 0-3-1 ATS, 2-2 O/U): Shirreffs threw for 819 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and rushed for another score. Noel Thomas Jr. (40 receptions, 388 yards, one TD) has nearly half of UConn's catches (81) and receiving yards (861) after a 14-catch performance against Syracuse. The Huskies were stopped at the goal line in losses to Navy (as time expired) and Syracuse (late in the fourth quarter), and got late game-winning field goals from Bobby Puyol (5-of-5 in field goals and 10-of-10 on extra points) in their two wins.

ABOUT HOUSTON (4-0, 3-1 ATS, 1-3 O/U): Ward (936 passing yards, five touchdowns and 113 rushing yards, three TDs) leads a balanced offense that's averaging 44.8 points. Senior linebacker Steven Taylor (tied for second nationally with 5.5 total sacks) leads a unit that is ranked first in the nation in rushing defense (37 yards), fourth in scoring defense (10.5 points) and fifth in total defense (228.8 yards). The Cougars held six straight opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards, including three straight (Texas State, 33; Cincinnati, 30; Lamar, 15) to 33 or fewer.

TRENDS:

* Connecticut is 1-4 ATS in its last five games versus a team with a winning record.
* Houston is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games overall.
* Under is 4-0 in Connecticut's last four games following a SU loss.
* Under is 6-1 in Houston's last seven home games.

CONSENSUS: Bettors are having no problem laying all those points with the home team, as a whopping 76 percent of wagers are backing Houston. As for the total, an even bigger majority is backing the Over, with 81 percent of wagers on it.

ST. LOUIS (AP) Yadier Molina hit a disputed double that drove in the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning Thursday night, sending the St. Louis Cardinals over the Cincinnati Reds 4-3.

The Cardinals are one game behind San Francisco for the second NL wild-card spot.

Matt Carpenter drew a one-out walk from Blake Wood (6-5). With two outs, Molina's one-hop hit clearly bounced off a sign above the left-field wall and caromed back into play.

Carpenter kept running and scored from first. Reds manager Bryan Price ran after the umpires, who left when Carpenter touched the plate.

Price said he was told by the umpire that he didn't make his appeal for a replay review fast enough on what should've been a ground-rule double.

Seung Hwan Oh (6-3) wound up with the win.

GIANTS 7, ROCKIES 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Johnny Cueto struck out 11 and San Francisco set up a wild race to the finish for the NL wild-card spots.

With three games left, the Giants are one game behind the New York Mets and one game ahead of St. Louis.

San Francisco hosts the Dodgers beginning Friday, the Cardinals play Pittsburgh at home and the Mets close out the regular season in Philadelphia.

Cueto (18-5) overcame a shaky start in his first appearance since being sidelined more than a week with a groin strain.

Colorado starter Jon Gray (10-10) allowed five runs over 5 1-3 innings.

MARINERS 3, ATHLETICS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Struggling Mike Zunino delivered the go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and Seattle stayed on the edge of the AL wild card chase.

The Mariners are two games behind Baltimore and Toronto with three to play.

Zunino, hitting .139 over his last 25 games, opened the seventh with his 12th home run, sending a 2-2 pitch from Liam Hendriks (0-4) deep over the wall in left.

Steve Cishek (4-6) won and rookie Edwin Diaz notched his 18th save.

DODGERS 9, PADRES 4

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Joc Pederson doubled twice and drove in three runs, and NL West champion Los Angeles avoided a three-game sweep in San Diego.

The Dodgers remained two games behind Washington with three to play in the race for home-field advantage in their upcoming Division Series matchup.

Rookie left-hander Julio Urias went three scoreless innings in his first start since Sept. 13. Brett Anderson (1-2) pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings for the victory.

Christian Friedrich (5-12) allowed five runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings.

CUBS 1, PIRATES 1, TIE, 6 INNINGS

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh played to the first tie game in the major leagues since 2005 when rain forced them to stop in the sixth inning.

The Cubs and Pirates aren't scheduled to play again this season, and the game won't be made up because it doesn't affect postseason positioning. So instead of becoming a suspended game, the stats count and it was declared a tie - the first since Houston and Cincinnati on June 30, 2005.

Willson Contreras had two hits and scored for the NL Central champion Cubs, who have already clinched the best record in the majors.

The game was called after a delay of 1 hour, 23 minutes.

ORIOLES 4, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Ubaldo Jimenez and two relievers combined on a three-hitter and Baltimore beat Toronto, leaving the teams tied in the AL wild-card race.

Detroit is 1 1/2 games behind the Orioles and Blue Jays.

Jimenez (8-12) allowed one hit in 6 2/3 innings, improving to 3-1 with a 2.31 ERA in five September starts.

Marcus Stroman (9-10) gave up nine hits and four runs in seven-plus innings. He is winless in eight starts.

BRAVES 5, PHILLIES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Freddie Freeman's 30-game hitting streak ended when he struck out in the eighth inning, but Atlanta later scored four runs off Philadelphia closer Jeanmar Gomez.

Mauricio Cabrera (5-1) got one out.

Gomez (3-5) took the loss as the Phillies fell to the Braves for the seventh straight time.

YANKEES 5, RED SOX 1

NEW YORK (AP) - The Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention despite finishing off a three-game sweep of AL East champion Boston.

CC Sabathia (9-12) allowed one run and four hits over a season-high 7 1/3 innings for his first win in a month.

Playing his final game at Yankee Stadium, Boston's David Ortiz was honored in a pregame ceremony, then struck out and walked. He was 0 for 10 with four strikeouts in the series.

Henry Owens (0-2) went 4 2/3 innings.

NATIONALS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Wilmer Difo hit his first major league homer, and Pedro Severino his second, helping injury-depleted NL East champion Washington move closer to clinching home-field advantage in the Division Series.

Second baseman Difo and catcher Severino, both rookies, were in the lineup instead of Daniel Murphy (last started 12 days ago) and Wilson Ramos (out for the season), respectively.

Last in the NL West, Arizona has nothing at stake the rest of the way. The Nationals, while already assured of winning their division and of facing the Los Angeles Dodgers to open their postseason, still are trying to lock up a higher seeding for that series.

Reliever Reynaldo Lopez (5-3) pitched 3 2/3 innings. Mark Melancon got two outs for his 45th save.

Arizona starter Robbie Ray (8-15) allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

TWINS 7, ROYALS 6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Byron Buxton tripled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice as Minnesota defeated Kansas City.

Salvador Perez's pinch-hit RBI single with two outs in the ninth pulled the Royals within a run, and Terrance Gore ran for him. Paulo Orlando was up next, and already had four hits when Brandon Kintzler picked off Gore at first base.

Gore was initially called safe, but was ruled out on a replay review.

Michael Tonkin (3-2) won and Kintzler got his 16th save. Kelvin Herrera (2-6) took the loss.

RAYS 5, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Archer overcame a shaky seventh inning to avoid becoming the majors' first 20-game loser since 2003 and lead Tampa Bay.

Archer (9-19) allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings to help the Rays snap a six-game skid. Mike Maroth of Detroit was the last pitcher to lose 20 times in a season.

Alex Colome got his 36th save.

Mikie Mahtook hit a solo homer in the fourth off Jose Quintana (13-12) and doubled and scored in a three-run seventh off Chicago's shaky bullpen.

Friday’s six-pack

NFL trends to ponder with Week 4 already underway……..

— Dallas is 3-7-1 in last 11 games outside its division.

— Raiders covered eight of their last ten road games.

— Texans are 9-3 in last 12 games as a home favorite.

— Washington is 16-31-2 in its last 49 games as a favorite.

— New Orleans is 8-3-1 in last 12 games as an underdog.

— Colts covered three of last ten tries as a favorite.

Friday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking or this weekend……….

13) Stanford-Washington is big game in Pac-12 North; Huskies needed OT to win at Arizona last week. Cardinal beat USC/UCLA last two weeks; they’re due for a letdown.

12) How healthy is Russell Wilson? Seattle has its bye next week; Wilson has already hurt an ankle and a knee in three games. If Wilson can’t go, TCU rookie Boykin would get his first NFL start in unfriendly Swamp Stadium, against a Jet squad that is 15-10 vs spread at home the last 3+ seasons. Jets had eight turnovers in an awful loss at Arrowhead last week.

11) Memphis-Ole Miss is regional rivalry, of sorts; they do some recruiting against one another. Tigers have been unable to get into a Power 5 league; games like this against an SEC opponent are important to them.

10) Falcons are averaging 7.0 yards per play, best in NFL; they can go up two games on defending NFC champ Carolina in NFC South with win here.

9) USC is 1-3 but is a 10-point home favorite over an Arizona State team that plays wild games- they’ve been lousy on defense but are still 4-0. Trojan Nation is not used to being 1-3.

8) Whats the deal with 9:30am ET NFL games from England? Colts-Jaguars is not something I’m anxious to set my alarm for. Rams play the Giants in three weeks, also a 9:30 kickoff, so it can be a day game in England. When is a person supposed to sleep?

7) Field for the baseball playoffs should be set by Sunday night; will they need playoff game(s) to figure out who the Wild Cards are?

6) Ed Orgeron is the interim coach for LSU, which is a 13-point favorite over Missouri. Curious to see if he has changed their offense in the six days since Les Miles was fired- he said he wants them to run the spread. Oregon was once the interim coach at USC and the head coach at Ole Miss. How much can you change in six days?

5) How good are the 3-0 Ravens? They’ve played Bills-Browns-Jaguars, none of whom bear any resemblance to the ’72 Dolphins, but you are what you are and they’re 3-0. Oakland comes to town with a high scoring offense— this is an interesting game.

4) Oklahoma-TCU should be a good game; Horned Frogs have one of the youngest teams in country, but they’re still very talented. Sooners are 1-2, play Texas next week. Tense times in Norman.

3) Drew Brees plays his first game as a visitor in San Diego, 11 years after his last season for the Chargers. New Orleans is traveling on a short week; their defense is terrible, but Chargers have had a hard time holding leads in their two losses so far.

2) Disappointed that Oregon-Washington State is on Pac-12 Network, since DirecTV doesn’t carry it. Just got my DirecTV bill a few minutes ago; for what I’m paying, they should throw in the Pac-12 Network for free. But thats not how rich people get rich.

1) I really like James Winston as a prospect but he panicked on the last play against the Rams LW, losing track of where the line of scrimmage was. Very interested in how he does against this strong Denver defense.

LEADING OFF: Wild-card chases in AL and NL, rainy forecasts
September 30, 2016

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

AL CHASE

Toronto (at Boston, facing 22-game winner Rick Porcello) and Baltimore (at Yankee Stadium) are tied for the two wild-card spots in the American League going into the final weekend of the regular season. Detroit (at Atlanta) is 1 + games behind, Seattle is two back.

NL RACE

The Mets hold a one-game lead in the NL wild-card scramble as rookie Robert Gsellman starts at Philadelphia. San Francisco (with Madison Bumgarner pitching at home vs. the Dodgers) is one game back, St. Louis (home vs. Pittsburgh) is two behind.

HIT THE SHOWERS

Weather might play havoc with the playoff scramble, with rain in the forecast along the East Coast. Postseason spots and positioning are still up for grabs, and washouts in Boston, New York, Washington and Philadelphia could cause scheduling woes.

WAITING TO HEAR

Washington righty A.J. Cole is slated to start at home against Miami, but is waiting to hear the outcome of his appeal of a five-game suspension for throwing at a batter. The Nationals have won the NL East and are trying to stay ahead of the Dodgers for home-field advantage in their upcoming Division Series matchup.

WELCOME

Cleveland lefty Ryan Merritt makes his first major league start when the AL Central champions play in Kansas City. The Indians are setting up their rotation for the Division Series and filling in with Merritt, who has pitched three times for them in relief.

MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: Texas Tea

The Rangers enter their season-ending weekend series with the visiting Tampa Bay Rays having racked up an incredible $3,086 through 159 games.

Our MLB cheat sheet breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro this weekend, including the Texas Rangers who have been better than every other team in baseball in one major category of interest for bettors.

Texas Tea

All 30 major-league teams still have at least a few more games to play, but the Texas Rangers have already earned themselves the 2016 crown for most units won. The Rangers enter their season-ending weekend series with the visiting Tampa Bay Rays having racked up an incredible $3,086 through 159 games. Texas was pegged to win 86 games by the majority of bookmakers in the preseason, but come into the final weekend of the season with 94 victories - and counting. The Rangers have been particularly dangerous at home this season, sporting a 52-26 mark they'll look to improve upon against Tampa Bay.

NL = Net Loss

Bettors didn't find much value in National League teams this season. Entering Thursday night's action, a whopping 12 of 15 NL teams have negative value on the season. The Arizona Diamondbacks are the NL leaders in units lost, going into Thursday at -$2,341 with three home games against San Diego to wrap up their season. Four out of five teams in each division are carrying a negative units total, with only the Padres ($370), Chicago Cubs ($315) and Atlanta Braves ($87) sitting on the positive side of the ledger. Eight of 15 American League teams have positive unit totals.

Blunder Twins

Few teams are as happy to see the regular season come to an end as the Minnesota Twins, who have secured the worst record in the major leagues by a wide margin. The Twins will be the only team to rack up more than 100 losses, and entered Thursday last in the majors in total units at -$3,528. So much went wrong for Minnesota this season - the Twins have the worst divisional record in the majors, they won just 30 games at home and the finished a mediocre 8-12 against interleague opponents. One thing did go Minnesota's way, however: It entered Thursday with the best Over mark in baseball (92-58-8).

Injury Updates

* Boston likely won't worry much if Hanley Ramirez misses any time in the playoffs - but Over bettors might. The Red Sox went into Thursday a sizzling 8-1 in nine games with Ramirez out of the lineup this season, but played to the Under in eight of those contests. Ramirez sat out Thursday to rest one day after the Red Sox clinched the AL East title.

* The Arizona Diamondbacks may be without Yasmany Tomas after the veteran right fielder missed Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Washington Nationals with a sore neck. The Diamondbacks haven't missed Tomas all that much so far, having won six of eight games he has sat out in 2016. Arizona is 6-2 O/U in those contests.

Hitting Notes

* Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jonathan Villar is on the verge of a strange milestone, sitting one home run shy of becoming the fourth player in major league history to put up 20 homers and 60 stolen bases in a season. Yet, despite his surprising power burst, the Brewers are just 9-8 SU in games where Villar has gone deep.

* The Cincinnati Reds were one of the top Over plays for the majority of the second half, and bettors can thank first baseman Joey Votto for much of that. Votto came into Thursday's action slashing an unbelievable .404/.492/.657 since the All-Star break, with 14 home runs and 50 RBIs in 297 plate appearances.

Pitching Notes

* Masahiro Tanaka will look to be the best value pitcher in baseball this season as he takes the hill Saturday in the New York Yankees' home encounter with the Baltimore Orioles. Tanaka has racked up $1,484 through 31 starts in 2016, with the Yankees having gone a red-hot 23-8 in those games.

* The Toronto Blue Jays' deadline deal for Pittsburgh Pirates lefty Francisco Liriano resulted in a bonanza for Under bettors. Liriano posted a sensational 2.92 ERA in 10 appearances (eight starts) with the Blue Jays, a major reason for Toronto's 1-7 O/U mark in his starts and a 2-8 O/U mark in his 10 outings.

Totals Trend

Runs have been in bountiful supply in Detroit Tigers games of late; the Tigers have played to the Over six straight times, going 3-3 SU in those contests.

BOSTON (AP) David Ortiz hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 on Friday night.

The AL East champion Red Sox snapped a three-game losing streak and stayed a half-game ahead of Cleveland in the race for home-field advantage when their playoff series begins next week.

The Blue Jays fell one game behind Baltimore in the wild-card race and are now within range of Detroit and Seattle in the fight for the AL's final postseason berth.

With his image mowed into the grass in center for the final regular-season series of his career, Ortiz hit his 38th homer of the year - and No. 541 of his career - to help Boston rally from a 3-1 deficit with four runs in the seventh.

Dustin Pedroia had three hits for Boston, and Brad Ziegler (2-3) picked up the win with one inning of scoreless relief. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 31st save.

Devon Travis had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Jose Bautista homered for Toronto. Joe Biagini (4-3) got the loss.

RANGERS 3, RAYS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Yu Darvish looked playoff-ready with a season-high 12 strikeouts in six innings, and Texas clinched home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

The Rangers have the tiebreakers over fellow contenders Boston and Cleveland. The AL owns home-field advantage in the World Series thanks to its win in the All-Star Game.

Darvish (7-5) allowed one run and three hits.

Shin-Soo Choo returned to Texas' lineup after missing 39 games with a fractured left forearm. Choo pulled a single to right in his first plate appearance since Aug. 15 and went 1 for 4.

Matt Andriese (8-8) gave up three runs and seven hits, including solo home runs to Carlos Beltran and Rougned Odor.

ORIOLES 8, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Baltimore's Mark Trumbo hit his major league-leading 47th home run, and Jonathan Schoop and Adam Jones also went deep in a six-run fifth inning.

The Orioles opened a one-game lead over the Blue Jays and remain 1 1/2 games in front of Detroit for the AL's two wild cards. Two games are left, and the Orioles' magic number for a postseason berth is two.

Trumbo and Jones homered off Michael Pineda (6-12), who started with 3 2/3 hitless innings and suddenly became ineffective.

Schoop tied his career high with five RBIs. Yovani Gallardo (6-8) won for just the second time in nine starts since Aug. 5, allowing two hits, three walks and Mark Teixeira's sacrifice fly in six innings.

Eliminated on Thursday, New York rested two regulars and pulled four others by the sixth inning.

METS 5, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jay Bruce homered for the third straight game and drove in three runs, Robert Gsellman threw six sharp innings and the Mets moved closer to securing a wild-card berth.

The defending NL champions reduced their magic number to one. The Mets began the night atop the wild-card race, with San Francisco one game back and St. Louis two behind.

Gsellman (4-2) scattered seven hits and struck out seven.

Philadelphia starter Alec Asher (2-1) allowed three runs and five hits in six-plus innings.

CARDINALS 7, PIRATES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Carlos Martinez pitched seven sharp innings, Matt Holliday hit an emotional home run and St. Louis stayed in the middle of the NL wild-card race.

The Cardinals began the day trailing San Francisco by one game for the second wild card. The Giants hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers later Thursday night.

Martinez (16-9) gave up five singles, walked one and struck out nine.

Holliday, who broke his left thumb when he was hit by a pitch Aug. 11, asked the club to activate him Friday to make what could be his farewell appearance in a Cardinals uniform. The Cardinals are not planning to pick up their $17 million option on his contract for 2017.

Holliday received a standing ovation before he pinch-hit in the seventh and responded with his 20th homer, and then came out for a curtain call.

Pittsburgh's Tyler Glasnow (0-2) pitched five innings of one-run ball.

TIGERS 6, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Miguel Cabrera hit two home runs, Ian Kinsler and Justin Upton also connected and Detroit moved up in the playoff race.

The Tigers won their third straight and pulled within a half-game of Toronto for the second AL wild card.

The regular season is scheduled to end Sunday, but the Tigers might need to play beyond that. They were rained out against Cleveland this week and would have to make up that game if it impacts their playoff chances.

Detroit's Daniel Norris (4-2) gave up one run and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings.

The Braves, playing their final series at Turner Field before moving north to the suburbs next year, had won 10 of 11. Matt Wisler (7-13) got the loss.

MARLINS 7, NATIONALS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Christian Yelich homered for Miami, and Dee Gordon's infield single in the sixth inning scored the go-ahead run.

The game began following a 1 hour, 43 minute rain delay. The series opener came a day after a memorial service in Florida for Jose Fernandez. The Marlins ace died in a boating accident Sunday.

Mike Dunn (6-1) got the win and A.J. Ramos pitched the ninth for his 40th save.

Anthony Rendon and Stephen Drew hit back-to-back home runs for Washington in a four-run fourth. Sammy Solis (2-4) got the loss.

Bryce Harper went 0 for 4 with four strikeouts in his return to the Nationals lineup after sitting out the previous four days with a left thumb injury.

CUBS 7, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Ben Zobrist homered twice and drove in three runs, helping the Cubs to the win.

Jake Buchanan (1-0) pitched five shutout innings as Chicago improved to 14-3 against Cincinnati this season with two games to play. The right-hander allowed two hits in his first start since 2014 with Houston.

Anthony Rizzo also drove in two runs for the NL Central champions, who were coming off a rare tie in Pittsburgh due to rain.

Joey Votto hit a two-run homer in the ninth for last-place Cincinnati, which announced before the game that manager Bryan Price would return next season. Josh Smith (3-3) was charged with two runs and three hits in five-plus innings.

WHITE SOX 7, TWINS 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Carlos Rodon tied an AL record by striking out the first seven batters and Tim Anderson had three hits to help the White Sox hand the Twins their 103rd loss - the most since the franchise moved to Minnesota.

Rodon (9-10) finished with 10 strikeouts in six innings and was charged with three runs and three hits. Anderson also drove in two runs in Chicago's sixth win in seven games.

Tyler Duffey (9-12) gave up five runs in two-plus innings to ensure Minnesota won't have a 10-game winner while reaching the most losses since the Washington Senators went 50-104 in 1949. The 57-103 Twins have two games left.

INDIANS 7, ROYALS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Ryan Merritt retired his final 13 batters while pitching five strong innings in his first big league start and Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer for Cleveland.

Merritt (1-0) gave up a run on three hits in the first, but nothing after that. Merritt, who had made three relief appearances after being promoted Sept. 11 from Triple-A Columbus, threw 62 pitches, striking out four and walking none.

Lindor, who snapped an 0-for-29 drought with a double in a four-run third, homered off the left-field foul pole in the seventh.

Kansas City's Yordano Ventura (11-12) gave up four runs and six hits in six innings.

ROCKIES 4, BREWERS 1

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit his NL-leading 41st homer for Colorado, and Chad Bettis pitched effectively into the seventh inning.

Bettis (14-8) allowed one run and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings while extending a career high in wins this season. He struck out five in the Rockies' first win in four games against Milwaukee this season.

Carlos Estevez got four outs before Adam Ottavino worked the ninth for his seventh save.

Chris Carter connected in the fourth inning, becoming the sixth player in Brewers history to reach 40 home runs in a season. Brent Suter (2-2) got the loss.

Saturday’s six-pack

Football trends to ponder with Week 4 already underway……..

— Western Michigan covered 10 of last 13 road games.

— North Carolina is 4-7 in last 11 games as a road dog.

— Virginia covered seven of last eight as a road dog.

— Middle Tennessee is 15-7 as a road favorite.

— Kansas State is 16-5 in last 21 games as a road underdog.

— Navy is 24-9 in last 33 games as a road underdog.

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind………

13) All major league baseball games Sunday start at 3pm, to maximize drama if any of the games factor into the playoff race.

12) Last Sunday in Miami, the Browns’ Terrelle Pryor was the first NFL player since the 49ers’ Billy Kilmer in 1962 to throw 4+ passes, catch 4+ passes and carry ball 4+ times in the same game.

If you’re an older human like me, you remember Kilmer as a gimpy QB for the Redskins team that lost a Super Bowl to Miami. But before a car accident in the mid-60’s, Kilmer was actually a pretty good runner.

11) Colorado’s Tyler Chatwood finishes the season with a 1.69 ERA in 13 road starts (80 IP). Very impressive, but unfortunately for him, he also has a 6.12 ERA in 14 home starts in the thin air of Denver’s Coors Field.

10) Umps appeared to have fouled up the end of the Reds-Cardinals game Thursday night; Yadier Molina hit a ball that should’ve been a ground rule double, keeping the game-winning runner on third with two out, but umps didn’t realize it was an issue and the Reds didn’t challenge quickly enough, so the Cardinals win 4-3 with a controversial ending.

Umpires need to stick around for an extra couple minutes at the end of close games like this, to make sure nothing gets screwed up– this looked really, really bad, it being a critical game in the Wild Card race.

9) Bad news for the Oklahoma City Thunder; backup guard Cameron Payne broke his foot and will be out for a while, maybe a long while.

8) When Dodgers lost Wednesday, it was first time in 19 games this season LA hit 3+ homers in a game and lost.

7) Marvin Lewis has been the Bengals’ coach since 2003; Adam Gase in the Dolphins’ 9th head coach since Lewis has been in Cincinnati.

6) Not only is JJ Watt out for the Texans, now coach Bill O’Brien has taken the play calling away from his OC and will do it himself. Alrighty then.

5) If you like to bet first five innings results in baseball, you may know that Milwaukee is 69-71 in first five innings, Texas is 67-70— pretty similar team???

Upon further review, the Brewers are 71-88 and waiting for the season to end, while Texas jogged into the playoffs, thanks to its 36-11 record in one-run games. Bullpens are important.

4) More bad news for the Philadelphia 76ers, as if they needed any more; prized rookie Ben Simmons broke a bone in his foot, an injury that typically takes eight weeks to heal. NBA season starts in 3.5 weeks.

3) Cleveland Browns are not getting star WR Josh Gordon back next week; he will enter a substance treatment program— there was no timeframe announced for his return, but it is being suggested that the Browns don’t want him around anymore. We wish him well in his recovery.

2) Turns out that Les Miles turned down the Michigan head coaching job back in 2011 to stay at LSU, which wound up firing him last week despite a 114-34 record. Miles is a Michigan alum.

1— There is a lot of speculation that if freshman QB Blake Barnett (just transferred out of Alabama) can enroll in a college that is on the quarter-system (five of 12 Pac-12 schools are), then he could be eligible to play at this time next fall, instead of sitting out an entire season. Stay tuned on this one.

CBS Sports’/former college coach Rick Neuheisel had this to say: “Lot of parents these days believe that if he ain’t starting, then he’ll be departing”, regarding their kids and playing time.

Not a lot of patience in today’s world.
