AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Eric Davis Jr. scored 15 points and sparked a flurry of first-half 3-pointers for No. 24 Texas as the Longhorns held off a late rally to beat No. 10 West Virginia 85-78 on Tuesday night.

Davis made four 3-pointers in the first half and Texas (17-9, 8-5 Big 12) had 10 in the game in capping a regular-season sweep of the Mountaineers. Texas broke a two-game losing streak.

Texas coach Shaka Smart had implored his team to show more emotion heading in a tough, late-season gauntlet against four ranked opponents in six games. Davis responded with arguably his best half of the season after scoring seven total points in the previous four games.

Isaiah Taylor led Texas with 23 points and seven assists.

Tarik Phillip scored 19 points for West Virginia (20-6, 9-4), which dropped one game behind No. 2 Kansas in the Big 12.

Jaysean Paige, the Mountaineers' leading scorer at 14.0 points per game, injured an ankle in the first half and never returned.

No. 25 BAYLOR 100, No. 13 IOWA ST. 91, OT

WACO, Texas (AP) - Johnathan Motley scored seven of his 27 points in overtime and Baylor ended a three-game home losing streak.

There were 14 ties and 14 lead changes in the game that began with both teams having identical records.

The final lead change came with 3:19 left in overtime when Lester Medford hit a 3-poitner from the left wing to put Baylor (19-7, 8-5 Big 12) up 87-84. After Deonte Burton missed badly on a 3-pointer, Taurean Prince had a bounce pass to Motley for an emphatic two-handed dunk.

Terry Maston had 15 points for Baylor, while Medford, Prince and Al Freeman all had 14. Motley, who scored 27 points in the teams' first meeting, had 10 rebounds.

The Cyclones (18-8, 7-6) had three 20-point scorers: Abdel Nader with 26, Georges Niang with 24 and Monte Morris with 20.

No. 17 PURDUE 71, NORTHWESTERN 61

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A.J. Hammons had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Johnny Hill added a season-high 15 points for Purdue.

The Boilermakers (21-6, 9-5 Big Ten) have not lost consecutive games this season.

Northwestern (17-10, 5-9) was led by Tre Demps with 16 points and Bryant McIntosh, who had 14 points and four assists. The Wildcats have lost seven of nine overall and five straight on the road.

Northwestern got as close as 39-35 in the second half, but Purdue got consecutive 3-pointers from Ryan Cline and Hill to spur a 10-2 run that made it 64-50 with 4:39 left. After that, Northwestern couldn't get closer than seven.

Purdue shot 38.3 percent from the field and was 4 of 13 from 3-point range. Northwestern shot 56 percent in the second half to improve its overall shooting percentage to 44.6 and was 6 of 27 from beyond the arc.

Blue Devils visit UNC
February 17, 2016

DUKE BLUE DEVILS (19-6, 8-4 ACC) at NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (21-4, 10-2 ACC)

Sportsbook.ag Line: UNC -6.5, Total: 162.5

No. 5 North Carolina looks to stop a three-game skid in its series against arch-rival Duke when the Tar Heels host the No. 20 Blue Devils on Wednesday night.

North Carolina (9-15-1 ATS; 4-8 ATS in-conference) hopes to have cleared the rough patch in their schedule after dropping consecutive road defeats at Louisville and at Notre Dame to start this month. The Tar Heels then squeaked by lowly Boston College in Chestnut Hill (68-65, UNC -20) which would take them to 1-6 ATS over a seven game stretch from Jan 16 – Feb 9.

Coach Roy Williams’ club, however, would look like themselves again in their most recent victory over Pittsburgh last Sunday (85-64, UNC -10), shooting 59% FG and dishing out 26 assists in the friendly confines of the Dean Dome. North Carolina is a perfect 13-0 at home this season, albeit just 5-7-1 ATS.

Duke comes into Wednesday night’s game playing their best basketball of the season since losing F Amile Jefferson indefinitely due to injury. The Blue Devils, who struggled to find their stride in January and fell out of the national rankings, used last week to knock off two top-15 teams in defeating Louisville (72-65, Duke -3.5) and Virginia (63-62, Duke -2), giving coach Mike Krzyzewski’s squad a four game winning streak and putting them back in the national rankings, while leaving Duke just two games behind North Carolina for the top spot in the ACC standings.

Duke’s win over Virginia on Sunday was of the buzzer-beating variety, with star guard Grayson Allen hitting an off-balance shot in the lane. Duke is 4-2 SU (4-2 ATS) on the road this season and 11-12-1 ATS overall.

To say the history between these two schools is well-documented would be an understatement. The last 20 meetings have been almost even, with Duke holding an 11-9 SU edge (9-11 ATS). The Blue Devils have actually won three of the last four (3-1 ATS) in Chapel Hill, as well. Recent trends show the road team in this series having excellent returns against the spread (7-2 ATS), while the total has gone UNDER six of the last eight times that North Carolina has hosted Duke. As mentioned earlier, Jefferson is still out indefinitely for Duke and looking at a possible medical redshirt.

Allen’s heroics against Virginia could be what provides the Blue Devils with enough confidence to take a fourth game in a row off of their hated rivals. The rising star (20.6 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 3.7 APG) has been everything coach Krzyzewski could’ve hoped for coming into this season. Make no mistake, stopping Allen should be the top priority for the Tar Heels. In six Duke losses this season Allen is averaging just 13.8 PPG.

Duke has gotten a big boost from freshman F Brandon Ingram (17.2 PPG, 6.7 RPG), especially since Jefferson’s injury. Ingram has had to play big on defense to help out C Marshall Plumlee (8.1 PPG, 8.4 RPG) and the lanky future pro has responded to average 8.9 RPG in his last 7 games, including four double-doubles. Ingram’s ability to step outside and drill the three at his size (41% 3PT, 2.2 3PM) is what makes him such an intriguing prospect for NBA scouts. Duke’s 11th ranked offense scores at an 83.4 PPG clip.

The Blue Devils are a great first-half team (offensively), scoring 41 points on average in the opening 20 minutes (4th NCAA). They also hold a big edge over North Carolina in their ability to hit the three, as the Blue Devils shoot 39.2% 3PT (19th NCAA) and make 9 threes per game. Unfortunately for Duke, they won’t have much answer for North Carolina on the glass, as they allow more than 10 offensive rebounds per game to their opponents (274th NCAA). Those second chances are what has Duke buried amongst the nation’s worst (311th) in FGA against per game (62.1).

North Carolina holds a statistical edge over Duke in just about every major category besides long-distance shooting, but the edges are slighter than you’d think. The Tar Heels score more per game (83.8 PPG), play slightly better defense (70.2 PPG), and shoot it better from the field (48.3% FG, 17th NCAA), but do it from the inside-out, unlike Duke who relies on drives and jumpers.

The Tar Heels are much more opportunistic on defense, where their 7.3 SPG (51st NCAA) is a big edge over Duke, and could come in handy against a team without a true point guard. Of course, North Carolina holds a big edge on the glass (40.4 RPG, 22nd NCAA; 12 ORPG, 19th NCAA). The Tar Heels will have to clamp down on the perimeter to snuff out Duke’s hopes of winning again in Chapel Hill, and that is – unfortunately for North Carolina fans – a weakness for coach Williams’ crew (36.8% 3PT against, 287th NCAA).

The Tar Heels will rely on the individual experience and brilliance of their senior leaders, F Brice Johnson (16.4 PPG, 10 RPG) and G Marcus Paige (13 PPG, 3.7 APG), who’ve been here before in the trenches of this rivalry. Paige had 23 points in last season’s home loss versus Duke while Johnson had 35 points and 19 rebounds combined last season against the Blue Devils.

A big boon to North Carolina’s attack, however, would be a healthy and focused Kennedy Meeks (10.6 PPG, 6.1 RPG). Meeks has had a very rough season, battling myriad ailments and getting docked for missing shoot-around recently. Coach Williams has kept his playing time restricted to roughly 20 minutes per game and Meeks has responded by failing to reach double figures in six of his last seven games.

Sophomore G Joel Berry II (12.2 PPG, 4.2 APG) provides a steady, if unspectacular, option as Paige’s backcourt mate. Berry II’s consistency, however, has provided a rudder for the Tar Heels amongst Paige and Meeks’ injuries and inconsistent play from other perimeter performers.

Duke at North Carolina
February 17, 2016

The most bitter rivalry in college basketball will be renewed Wednesday night in Chapel Hill when North Carolina takes on Duke at The Dean Dome.

The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas opened North Carolina (21-4 straight up, 10-14-1 against the spread) as a 6.5-point home favorite. A few offshore shops had the total at 163 as of early this morning.

North Carolina is No. 8 in the RPI Rankings, compiling a 3-3 record against Top-50 opponents and an 11-3 mark versus Top-100 foes. The Tar Heels’ best wins have come at home over Maryland and Pittsburgh. They have road scalps at Syracuse and at FSU, in addition to neutral-court triumphs over UCLA, Kansas State and Temple.

Roy Williams’s squad is unbeaten in 13 home games, posting a 6-7 spread record. The Tar Heels have been single-digit home favorites just once, getting a fortunate cover in an 89-81 win over Maryland as 7.5-point faves.

Since dropping back-to-back contests at Louisville and at Notre Dame, UNC has won consecutive games. Nevertheless, it has limped to a 2-6 spread record in its last eight games.

North Carolina captured an 85-64 win over Pittsburgh on Sunday as a 10.5-point home ‘chalk.’ Brice Johnson was the catalyst with 19 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Justin Jackson added 14 points and six assists, while Marcus Paige finished with 15 points on 3-iof-6 shooting from downtown.

Johnson is averaging a double-double, scoring at a 16.4 points-per-game clip while also bringing down 10.0 rebounds per contest. Paige is averaging 13.0 PPG and has a 70/20 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Joel Berry II (12.1 PPG) is averaging team-highs in assists (4.1 APG) and steals (1.6 SPG).

Since losing four of five games, Duke (19-6 SU, 11-12 ATS) has won four in a row, including Saturday’s 63-62 victory over Virginia as a 2.5-point home favorite. Grayson Allen powered his way into the lane off the dribble and banked home the game winner at the buzzer. Allen may have taken an extra step but there appeared to be contact as well. There was no whistle and the Blue Devils prevailed.

Freshman Brandon Ingram led Duke with a game-high 25 points, while Allen finished with 15. Matt Jones added 14 points.

Duke has been an underdog just twice, going 0-2 both SU and ATS in losses at Miami and vs. Kentucky on a neutral floor. The Blue Devils are 4-2 both SU and ATS in six road assignments.

Duke is No. 18 in the RPI, going 3-5 versus the Top 50 and 11-6 against the Top 100. The win over UVA was the Blue Devils’ first over a Top-25 foe. They have home wins over UVA, Louisville, Indiana, Siena, Yale, Long Beach State and N.C. State, in addition to neutral-court triumphs over VCU and Georgetown.

Allen is averaging team-bests in scoring (20.6 PPG), assists (3.7 APG) and field-goal percentage (48.9%). Ingram (17.2 PPG) leads Duke in steals (29) and is second on the team in rebounding (6.8 RPG) and blocked shots (38).

Duke has won three in a row over UNC and five of the last six. When they play in Chapel Hill last year, the Blue Devils captured an 84-77 win as one-point road underdogs. Paige scored 23 points and dished out five assists in the losing effort.

The ‘over’ is 14-11-1 overall for UNC, 8-5 in its home games. However, the Tar Heels have seen the ‘under’ cash in their last four games and seven of their last eight.

The ‘under’ has cashed in seven of Duke’s last 10 games, going 4-1 in its last five outings. Totals have been a wash for the Blue Devils both overall (12-12) and on the road (3-3).

The road team is 7-2 ATS in the last nine head-to-head meetings. The ‘over’ has hit in the last three encounters.

Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- UNC is ninth in the nation in scoring, averaging 83.8 PPG.

-- Virginia hasn’t won at Duke since 1995.

-- Syracuse has won five in a row and seven of its eight. Nevertheless, the Orange is a 7.5-point underdog tonight at Louisville. They are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games. Meanwhile, U of L has dropped back-to-back games both SU and ATS at Duke and at Notre Dame. This game will tip at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

-- The ‘under’ has cashed in five straight games for Louisville.

-- Texas A&M started SEC play with a 7-0 record, only to lose five straight in conference action. The Aggies brought a halt to their slump by pulling away late to clip Ole Miss by a 71-56 count last night as 9.5-point home favorites.

-- After losing at home Saturday to Alabama, Florida responded Tuesday night by rallying past Georgia for a 57-53 win as a 1.5-point road favorite. The Gators overcame atrocious shooting in the first half (1-of-17 from 3-point range), including a drought covering the last 8:13 without scoring a bucket. But freshman guard KeVaughn Allen came up with a team-high 19 points to help UF improve to 8-5 in SEC play.

-- Alabama is a 7.5-point underdog tonight at LSU. The Crimson Tide has been an underdog 16 times this year, producing a stellar 11-5 spread record with eight outright wins. They had not won at UF since 1995 before Saturday’s triumph at the O-Dome.

-- New Mexico is a 3.5-point home favorite tonight vs. Boise State at The Pit. The Broncos are 2-2 ATS with zero outright wins in four games as underdogs. They are mired in a 1-5 ATS slump. The ‘over’ is 6-2 in BSU’s last eight games, 4-1 in the Lobos’ last five outings. Tip-off is slated for 10:00 p.m. Eastern on the CBS Sports Network.

-- Monmouth suffered a huge loss in Monday’s home win over Manhattan. Deon Jones broke his hand and is out indefinitely. Jones was averaging 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The Hawks can only hope he’ll be able to return for a near-certain trip to the NCAA Tournament.

-- Nebraska star swingman Shavon Shields will miss his third consecutive game tonight at Indiana. Shields, who is still suffering from concussion symptoms, is averaging 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. The Cornhuskers were 13-point road underdog as of early this morning.

-- Northern Iowa has won six in a row going into tonight’s game at Loyola-Chicago. The Panthers, fresh off a 53-50 win at Wichita State as 14.5-point underdogs, were favored by five points at most spots early this morning. They hooked up money-line backers with a +900 return (risk $100 to win $900) in the win over the Shockers.

-- Texas Tech vaulted up to No. 31 in the RPI after winning Saturday at Baylor. The Red Raiders can further bolster their resume with a win at home tonight over Oklahoma. These teams collide in Lubbock on ESPNU at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. The Sooners were favored by five early this a.m.

-- Speaking of Baylor, Scott Drew’s team had to go without leading rebounder Rico Gathers at home last night vs. Iowa State. The Bears needed overtime but eventually disposed of the Cyclones, 100-91, to take the cash as two-point home ‘chalk.’

-- After getting trounced by Kentucky at home Saturday, South Carolina lost outright at Missouri last night. It was a terrible night for the SEC, as Vanderbilt led nearly all night at The Hump before losing by one in Starkville. The Commodores, who were a part of Joe Lunardi’s “Last Four In” going into the game at Mississippi State, couldn’t afford a loss to a team outside of the RPI Top 100.

-- Texas is 8-1 ATS in its last nine games after handling West Virginia, 85-78 at home as a two-point home favorite.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings.........

13) There was thing on TV in Raleigh, NC this week, that an NC State student who finished last in his fantasy football league had to spend 30 consecutive hours in a Waffle House as punishment for his dismal season. His friends came by to visit, he had some school books to study (architecture) but he was there for 30 freakin' hours.

Waffle Houses are smaller, cheesier versions of Denny's; in other words, they're great.

12) HBO started a 5-part reality show this week on Gonzaga's basketball team; lot of practice stuff, road trips, stuff like that. First episiode was pretty good, but coach Mark Few is a calm guy, so the entertainment factor won't be as high as if you had a wacko in charge of the program, where outbursts would make for good TV.

11) Speaking of Gonzaga, since 1999 they are 14-3 in first round of NCAAs, 5-9 in second round, 1-4 in regional semis, 0-1 in regional finals.

10) Over the last 10 years, Florida Gators were 25-5 in NCAA tournament under coach Billy Donovan, who is now in the NBA. Weirdly, they missed the tourney in three seasons, but made the Elite 8 in six of the other seven.

9) UConn is another team with an odd resume; in their last five NCAA tourneys, they lost in first round twice, made Final Four other three times, winning two titles, in 2011 and 2014, under two different coaches.

8) Roger Goodell made $34M in 2014; its good to be the commish of America's most popular sport. Trivia you may already know: when Robert Kennedy was assassinated in June of 1968, Goodell's father took RFK's Senate seat. He didn't make $34M.

7) Since 1998, Duke is 15-3 in first round of NCAA tournament, 14-1 in the second round, only 7-7 in regional semis, 5-2 in regional finals, 4-1 in nationl semis, 3-1 in title tilts. So you want to play Duke in the first game of the second weekend.

6) Speaking of Duke, when they beat Virginia 63-62 the other day, lot of people were complaining because Grayson Allen walked on his last shot, but he also was fouled and I am no Duke fan. If the whistle was going to be blown on that play, they were going to call the foul before they called a walk. Especially in Durham.

5) If you're planning your summer already: Packers-Colts is first NFL exhibition game, August 7 in Canton, Ohio. SEC already released its schedule for football media days-- July 14 is our guy Les Miles' turn at the podium.

4) LSU's basketball team scored 81.8 ppg in four games since a 77-75 home loss to Oklahoma, when Ben Simmons took criticism for not demanding the ball late in that close game. Kid is a freshman in college, he isn't a jerk and he takes heat for not being selfish; thats the America we live in now.

Simmons was 6-7 from the floor vs Oklahoma; in four games since, he is 28-49, an average of 12.3 shots per game, so the coach is making sure he gets more shots.

3) Kentucky is 22-4 in its last 26 NCAA tourney games; they made the Final Four the last four times they were in the tournament- they missed in 2013. .

2) Good news for BYU's football team: QB Taysom Hill will be back for his last season in the fall. he hurt his foot in the first game LY and missed rest of the season.

1) Kansas was pick 'em when they lost to Wichita State in second round of NCAAs last March; they were the first #2 seed since 1992 that wasn't favored in its second round game-- USC was a 1-point dog to Georgia Tech back in '92. . Kansas is just 4-3 in its last three NCAA tournaments.

Game of the Day: Duke at North Carolina
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Tobacco Road rivalry is the biggest in college basketball, this time with UNC playing host. Duke is 4-1 ATS in their last five trips to Chapel Hill.

Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina Tar Heels (-6.5, OFF)

Duke’s latest surge has it back in the Top 25 and pointed up in the ACC with six games left in the regular season. The Blue Devils will get a chance to prove their four-game winning streak is for real when they visit North Carolina on Wednesday for the latest chapter in the historic rivalry.

Duke is up to No. 19 in the latest rankings and recovered from its stretch of four losses in five games by knocking off back-to-back ranked teams last week to extend the winning streak to four. Grayson Allen played the hero with an off-balance, buzzer-beating bank shot in the 63-62 victory over Virginia on Saturday and ranks second in the ACC in scoring at an average of 20.6 points. The Tar Heels are up to No. 4 in the rankings and first place in the ACC after opening a three-game homestand by crushing Pittsburgh 85-64 on Sunday in a game that included 26 assists on 32 made field goals and five different scorers in double figures. “When you play with a lot of effort and a lot of energy, it becomes a lot more fun, and it just becomes a lot more easy on the defensive end,” North Carolina forward Brice Johnson told reporters. “Everyone is just flying around and playing great together.”

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: North Carolina opened as 6.5-point home faves against rival Duke. The total is currently off the board.

INJURY REPORT:

Duke - F A. Jefferson (out indefinitely, foot).

North Carolina - No injuries to report.

ABOUT DUKE (19-6, 11-12-1 TAS, 12-12 O/U): The Blue Devils had a chance to win on the final play against Virginia thanks to a solid effort on the glass and a solid defensive effort down the stretch. It was a continuation of an uptick in effort that has been noticeable of late. “There are certain portions of the game where I don’t care how you draw up your offense or defense, you just have to be tough,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski told reporters about the team’s change in attitude. “You have to fight through tired, fight through somebody not playing as well and get them going at that point. … We’ve talked about it, we’ve met on it, and they’re doing it now. It has paid off.”

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (21-4, 10-14-1 ATS, 14-11 O/U): Tar Heels sophomore forward Justin Jackson failed to score in double figures in six of eight games before breaking out of the slump in the last two contests. Jackson went 9-of-11 from the field as North Carolina pulled out a 68-65 win at Boston College on Feb. 9 and burned Pittsburgh for 14 more points on Sunday. “I started to shoot it like I knew it was going in,” Jackson told reporters. “So I think I definitely relaxed a little bit, and it’s just a different attitude honestly. Just going out there and trying to have fun instead of just going out there and feeling like I have to do something.”

TRENDS:

* Duke is 4-1 ATS in its last five meetings at North Carolina.
* Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings at North Carolina.
* Under is 4-0 in North Carolina's last four games overall.

CONSENSUS: Early on the public is backing North Carolina in the Tobacco Road rivalry, with 59 percent of wagers on the Tar Heels.

Top Big 10 Teams
February 16, 2016

A Big 10 representative hasn't won college basketball 's national championship since 2000 (Michigan State), but Indiana got to the title game in 2002, as did Illinois (2005), Ohio State (2007), Michigan State (2009) and Michigan (2013), so they've been knocking on the door. Here's a look at some of the best of the Big 10 with the March tournaments on the horizon.

Iowa: The Hawkeyes passed their toughest tests earlier in the year, sweeping Michigan State, crushing Wichita and winning at Purdue (70-63) as a +9 dog. This team is so tough to defend, with height under the glass in 7-1 senior center Adam Woodbury and senior forward 6-9 Jarrod Uthoff (18.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg).

If opponents double down low Iowa has loads of three-point options in seniors Mike Gesell (8.8 ppg, 6.9 apg) and Anthony Clemmons (8.6 ppg; 3.9 apg), along with 6-6 Peter Jok. They lead the Big 10 in scoring. Four starters returned from last season so they were supposed to be good – and have been better. With an easy schedule down the stretch, they have a great shot to capture the regular season Big 10 title.

Maryland: The Terrapins have been a force all season, with a win at UConn and a close loss to North Carolina (89-81). The Maryland offense revolves around a one-two punch of 6-2 sophomore Melo Trimble (14.5 ppg) and 6-9 junior Robert Carter, though four players average in double figures.

6-11 freshman Diamond Stone (12.8 ppg) has made an already talented team better. They have been on an impressive 12-4 ATS run in Big 10 play, as well as 8-3 ATS on the road. But what to make of that late season slump? They lost at Michigan as a favorite, and got thumped by Michigan State (74-65). The rematch with Michigan comes this weekend…at home.

Indiana: The Hoosiers like to run behind senior guard Yogi (don’t call me Berra) Ferrell (17 ppg) and 6-7 junior Troy Williams (13 ppg). Their three-point shooting defense is outstanding, as well as being the top defensive rebounding team in the Big 10. It’s a deep squad with four players averaging in double figures in scoring, including 6-10 freshman Thomas Bryant (12 ppg, 5.5 rpg). They have been impressive as a dog, winning at Michigan (80-67) and topping Notre Dame (80-73). The schedule is tough these next two weeks, with showdowns against Purdue, Iowa and Maryland.

Michigan State: You need frontcourt muscle in the Big 10 and the Spartans have it with 6-10 freshman Deyonta Davis (8 ppg) and 6-9 Matt Costello, while 6-5 senior Denzel Valentine (18 ppg, 7.8 rpg) does it all, leading the Spartans with over 6 assists per contest. Davis set the school's single-game freshman record with six blocks in a 76-45 win against Northwestern.

They play tough defense for Coach Tom Izzo, topping Maryland (74-65), Kansas (79-73) and Louisville (71-67). They are the type of well coached, physical defense you don’t want to face in March.

Purdue: The Boilermakers have a big frontcourt behind 7-foot senior A.J. Hammons (14 ppg, 8 rpg), 6-9 freshman Caleb Swanigan (9 ppg, 9 rpg) and 6-7 sophomore Vince Edwards. They started 11-0 with wins over Florida (85-70) and at Pitt (72-59) before getting upended by Butler (74-68). Purdue hasn’t been tested much and lost twice to Iowa. The defense and free throw shooting, however, have been near the bottom of the Big 10 all season, and you need both when tournament play commences.

Michigan: The Wolverines have been a force all season, tops in the Big 10 in field goal and free throw shooting. They’ve been able to stay afloat despite the loss of star Carl Levert (17.6 pp) in December. Picking up the slack has been the trio of 6-8 sophomore Duncan Robinson (12 ppg), 6-6 junior Zak Irvin (10 ppg) and senior guard Derrick Walton Jr (11.7 ppg), the latter a strong rebounder and playmaker.

They had a rough stretch playing four teams ranked in the Top 20 and lost three of them, all by 9 or more points. One weakness: Michigan is at the bottom of the Big 10 in field goal shooting defense.

CNotes....Wisconsin made the championship game last year....and right now I'd put the Badgers ahead of both Purdue and Michigan .....

Preview: Volunteers (12-13) at Wildcats (19-6)
Date: February 18, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Kentucky couldn't handle the adversity in a shocking loss at Tennessee earlier this month. The young Wildcats have since undeniably grown in that area.

Playing their best basketball of the season, the 14th-ranked Wildcats can avenge that stinging defeat when the Volunteers visit Rupp Arena on Thursday night.

Kentucky's championship credentials were put into question after squandering a 21-point first-half lead in an 84-77 loss to Tennessee on Feb. 2, but it's quieted the critics with blowout wins over three other SEC contenders. The Wildcats have beaten Florida, Georgia and South Carolina by an average of 26.7 points and done so with Alex Poythress, the team's leading rebounder and lone senior, sidelined by a knee injury.

Kentucky (19-6, 9-3 SEC) didn't even need John Calipari in its latest lopsided victory. With their coach ejected less than three minutes in, the energized Wildcats proceeded to hand the Gamecocks their first home loss in Saturday's 89-62 rout.

"I thought it set a fire within our guys,' associate head coach Kenny Payne said of Calipari's two technical fouls. 'I thought they played with, 'You try and take one of our guys out? We're coming out and going to play with more energy, more effort. We're going to fight more.''

The Wildcats should remain motivated after Tennessee (12-13, 5-7) scored 48 second-half points and held the dynamic backcourt duo of Jamal Murray and Tyler Ulis to a combined 10-of-30 shooting in the previous matchup.

Duplicating the feat figures to be a major challenge. Kentucky has limited opponents to 57.0 points per game and 31.6 percent shooting during the win streak and been on fire from 3-point range, hitting 33 of 66 attempts.

Murray is 18 of 31 on 3s while averaging 28.3 points over that stretch. The star freshman had 26 and Ulis, averaging 21.3 points in his last eight, amassed career highs of 27 and 12 assists against the Gamecocks.

'The story isn't someone else coaching the team, the story is coach Cal coached the team through Tyler Ulis,' Payne said.

Tennessee hasn't been able to build on what's been the signature win in coach Rick Barnes' first season, losing two of three and shooting under 40 percent in each game. The Volunteers also struggled to defend last-place Missouri, which went 67.9 percent from inside the arc and posted a 41-26 rebounding advantage en route to Saturday's 75-64 victory.

"It is frustrating. It really is," Barnes said. "That is why you do not take playing hard for granted. I think playing hard is a talent. Some things are just nonnegotiable and that is your effort."

The Volunteers finished 14 of 24 from the foul line, an uncharacteristic performance for the SEC's top free-throw shooting team at 73.8 percent. They were 30 of 34 in their upset of the Wildcats, with Kevin Punter Jr. going 10 of 11 in a 27-point effort.

Punter, second in the conference at 22.2 points per game, has scored 21 or more in seven of his last nine but is shooting 36.8 percent over his past four.

Tennessee is seeking its first season sweep of Kentucky since 1999, and first win at Rupp since Feb. 7, 2006. The Volunteers are 1-11 away from home this season and have lost 14 of 15 on the road in the series, including eight straight.

Preview: Terrapins (22-4) at Golden Gophers (6-19)
Date: February 18, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Maryland is coming off its first-ever home loss in Big Ten play, but the first-time feat it's threatened with next might feel like more of a shock should it play out.

The sixth-ranked Terrapins will try to get back on track Thursday night at Minnesota as the Golden Gophers seek their first conference win in a matchup of teams dealing with disciplinary issues.

Maryland (22-4, 10-3) fell 70-57 to Wisconsin on Saturday after winning its first 15 home games as a member of the Big Ten. It snapped a five-game winning streak since last losing at then-No. 11 Michigan State on Jan. 23.

"The reality of it is we're 22-4. We've had a good year," coach Mark Turgeon said. "Every team goes through it. This is really probably the biggest adversity we've hit because we lost a home game. So, we'll see how we handle it."

The Terrapins will hope for that to include a return to strong perimeter defense after allowing the Badgers to hit 12 of 26 from 3-point range. That followed an eight-game stretch on which Maryland had limited opponents to 24.8 percent from long range.

"We've come a long way defensively, but we didn't play as we have recently," forward Jake Layman said.

The greater concern, however, might be the recent play of Melo Trimble. Maryland's top scorer was 1 for 14 against Wisconsin, and the sophomore guard has been limited to 9.7 points on 4-of-27 shooting - 1 of 8 from 3-point range - in the last three games.

The need for his scoring could be even greater as the Terrapins will be without No. 2 scorer Diamond Stone, who has been suspended for a game by Turgeon for his behavior against Wisconsin. The freshman center was issued a dead ball technical foul late in the first half. After Stone and Wisconsin's Vitto Brown went to the floor underneath the basket, Stone pushed Brown's face onto the court after they became untangled.

"I regret that I let the emotions of the game get the best of me," said Stone, who is averaging 12.8 points and 5.4 rebounds and has started the last six games. "I let my team down and I accept full responsibility for my actions."

The Golden Gophers (6-19, 0-13) will be without Carlos Morris for much longer after dismissing the swingman Wednesday for conduct detrimental to the team. Morris was Minnesota's fourth-leading scorer at 9.8 points a game and made 16 starts, though there are larger concerns among the Gophers.

Their worst start ever in conference play is part of a 14-game overall skid, the likes of which the program hasn't seen since dropping 16 in a row in 1986-87.

That said, after Sunday's 75-71 loss at No. 4 and conference-leading Iowa, seven of Minnesota's last eight defeats have been by eight points or fewer.

"Now is not the time to crush them, but to be there for them," coach Richard Pitino said. "I really can't worry about yesterday. I can't worry about the future. I just have to worry about here and now and just be there for my guys."

Top scorer Nate Mason is averaging 17.3 points over the last seven games, but he's 4 of 25 from 3-point range in his last five. The Gophers have hit 19.5 percent from long range in that time.

Maryland began the series as conference foes with a 70-58 home win Jan. 3, 2015 to improve to 5-0 all-time against Minnesota. Trimble scored 20, while the dismissed Morris had 18 for the Gophers.

Preview: Badgers (16-9) at Spartans (21-5)
Date: February 18, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

A last-minute rally against Michigan State has morphed into a monthlong winning streak that's saved Wisconsin's season.

The eighth-ranked Spartans have come out of a midseason slump as well, further raising the stakes of Thursday's anticipated rematch between the two 2015 Final Four participants.

An afterthought in the Big Ten race following a 1-4 start in league play, Wisconsin (16-9, 8-4) has gone from a likely NCAA Tournament outsider to a projected invitee by ripping off seven consecutive conference wins that include three ranked opponents. The turnaround began with a stunning late comeback over the then-No. 4 Spartans on Jan. 17, in which the Badgers scored the final five points and earned a 77-76 victory on Ethan Happ's hoop underneath the basket with 10 seconds remaining.

The carryover from that momentum-building result hasn't stopped. The Badgers further enhanced their profile with an overtime win over then-No. 19 Indiana on Jan. 26 and Saturday's 70-57 upset of then-No. 2 Maryland that halted the Terrapins' 27-game home winning streak.

'We've come a long way,' said interim coach Greg Gard, now 9-4 since taking over following Bo Ryan's abrupt retirement in mid-December. 'I knew we were taking steps in the right direction. It was just a matter of time before we put a more complete game together. Tonight was as close to the 40 minutes of complete basketball that we've played.'

The Wisconsin loss was part of a three-game skid for Michigan State (21-5, 8-5), which has been nearly perfect since. The Spartans have won five of six, with last week's 82-81 overtime loss at then-No. 18 Purdue the blemish. Their last four wins have come by an average of 25.0 points.

Pinpoint perimeter shooting has been a constant during the surge, with the Spartans connecting on 51.9 percent of their 3-point attempts over the last five games and making 10 or more in each. Denzel Valentine is 24 of 42 during that stretch and is coming off a superlative performance on Valentine's Day. The national player of the year candidate amassed 30 points and a career-high 13 assists in Sunday's 88-69 victory over Indiana, among the three teams the Spartans and Badgers are chasing in the Big Ten.

"We felt like we let one slip away from us (against Purdue) and we deserved to win that game," he said. "We came out here and took it to Indiana a little bit."

Matt Costello added a career-high 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds. The senior forward is averaging a conference-leading 10.2 rebounds in Big Ten play and had 13 along with 18 points in the teams' first meeting.

Wisconsin also has been shooting well, hitting 36 of 71 3-point tries over its last three. Vitto Brown is 6 for 9 over the past two and followed an 18-point effort in last Wednesday's 72-61 win over Nebraska with a career-high 21 against Maryland.

Bronson Koenig, who recorded a career-high 27 points against the Spartans last month, is 9 of 20 from 3 in the last three contests while Nigel Hayes is averaging 20.4 points during the winning streak. He had 25 in the previous matchup.

The Badgers have won three straight in the series, including an 80-69 overtime win in last year's Big Ten Tournament championship game, but have lost eight in a row in East Lansing since a 68-64 overtime win on March 2, 2004.

Thursday's Tip Sheet
February 18, 2016

**Southern Methodist at Connecticut**

-- The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas opened UConn (18-7 straight up, 10-10-1 against the spread) as a three-point favorite, only to adjust the number 2.5 by early this morning.

-- UConn has won 12 of its 14 home games while posting a 5-5 spread record.

-- UConn is No. 44 in the RPI Rankings, compiling a 2-3 record against the Top 50 and a 6-7 mark versus the Top 100. The Huskies have quality non-conference triumphs at Texas, vs. Georgetown, vs. Ohio State and vs. Michigan on a neutral court.

-- Kevin Ollie’s club has won seven of its last nine games, going 5-4 ATS, but it has failed to cover the number in three consecutive contests. UConn won a 75-73 decision over Tulsa as an eight-point home favorite Saturday in Storrs. Sterling Gibbs and Omar Calhoun led five double-figure scorers with 14 points apiece, while Daniel Hamilton tallied 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

-- Hamilton (11.7 points per game) averages team-highs in rebounding (9.1 RPG), assists (5.0 APG) and steals (1.1 SPG) for the Huskies.

-- SMU (21-3 SU, 9-11 ATS) is 9-3 in AAC action, leaving it one-half game behind conference-leading Temple and its 10-3 ledger. Larry Brown’s squad has won six of its eight road games, going 5-3 ATS.

-- After starting 18-0, SMU dropped three of five games before beating Gonzaga on Saturday by a 69-60 count as a five-point home ‘chalk.’ The Mustangs played stifling defense on Gonzaga All-American Kyle Wiltjer, who missed all eight of his 3-point attempts and made only 2-of-17 from the field in a four-point effort. Nic Moore was sensational for the winners, scoring 25 points and dishing out 11 assists compared to only one turnover. Ben Moore added 16 points, four rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots.

-- SMU is led by Moore, the senior point guard who averages team-highs in scoring (16.7 points per game), assists (5.2 APG) and steals (1.3 SPG).

-- SMU is No. 14 in the RPI, going 2-1 versus the Top 50 and 8-3 versus the Top 100. The Mustangs own quality victories at Tulsa, at Stanford and vs. Colorado on a neutral floor. They also have Top-100 home scalps over Yale, Michigan, Cincinnati, Houston and Gonzaga.

-- This is SMU’s first underdog situation of the season.

-- The ‘over’ is 11-9 overall for the Mustangs, 5-3 in their road contests.

-- The ‘under’ is 12-8-1 overall for the Huskies, 5-5 in their home games. They have seen the ‘under’ cash at an 8-2 clip in their last 10 games.

-- ESPN2 will have the broadcast at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

**Wisconsin at Michigan State**

-- The Westgate SuperBook opened Michigan State (21-5 straight up, 16-9 against the spread) as a 10-point home favorite for this Big Ten showdown. The number was adjusted to 9.5 by late Wednesday night.

-- Michigan State is No. 17 in the RPI, producing a 6-4 record versus the Top 50 and an 8-4 mark against the Top 100. The Spartans only have one quality road win (at Michigan), but they own neutral-court scalps of Boise State , Kansas and Providence, in addition to home victories over Louisville, Florida, Maryland and Indiana.

-- Tom Izzo’s team is 11-2 SU and 8-4 ATS at home inside Breslin Center. Since MSU lost three in a row in mid-to-late January, it has won five of its last six games while covering the number in all six of those outings. The Spartans are off of Sunday’s 88-68 win over Indiana as seven-point home favorites. Denzel Valentine delivered on the 14th of February, tallying 30 points, five rebounds, three steals, one blocked shots and 13 assists compared to merely one turnover. Matt Costello added 22 points, 11 boards and three blocked shots.

-- Michigan State is third in the nation in field-goal percentage defense, forcing foes to shoot at a mediocre 37.3 percent clip. The Spartans defend the 3-point line well, ranking No. 8 (29.4%) in the country. They’re No. 18 in scoring defense, limiting opponents to 63.8 points per game.

-- Michigan State is one of the country’s best 3-point shooting squads, draining 42.3 percent of its launches from long distance.

-- Valentine is averaging 19.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game. Bryn Forbes (14.0 PPG) is burying 48.1 percent of his shots from 3-point land.

-- Wisconsin has ripped off seven consecutive victories both SU and ATS to improve to 8-4 in Big Ten play. The Badgers are off Saturday’s stunning 70-57 win at Maryland as 8.5-point road underdogs. Junior forward Vitto Brown was the catalyst with 21 points and seven rebounds on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Bronson Koenig added 16 points, six boards and five assists, while Nigel Hayes contributed 14 points and six rebounds.

-- Wisconsin is No. 45 in the RPI, going 4-4 against Top-50 opponents and 8-5 versus Top-100 foes. The Badgers have two huge road scalps at Maryland and at Syracuse. They also own quality home wins over Indiana, Michigan State , Temple and Ohio State

-- Wisconsin has posted a 4-3 SU record and a 5-2 ATS mark in its seven road games.

-- UW has occupied the underdog role nine time this year, producing a 5-4 spread record with four outright victories.

-- The ‘over’ is 13-12 overall for the Badgers, but the ‘under’ is 6-1 in their road assignments.

-- The ‘under’ is 13-12 overall for the Spartans, 7-5 in their home games. However, they have seen the ‘over’ hit in four consecutive contests.

-- Tip-off is slated for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Despite losing Matt Jones to a sprained ankle in the first half, Duke somehow found a way to rally past North Carolina and capture an improbable win last night in Chapel Hill. The Blue Devils won outright as 8.5-point underdogs.

-- Alabama improved to 12-5 ATS with nine outright victories in 17 games as an underdog with last night’s 76-69 win at LSU as an eight-point underdog. The Crimson Tide hooked up money-line supporters with a +325 payout (risk $100 to win $325). Retis Obasohan was the best player on the court all night, producing 35 points, four rebounds, one steal and three assists without a turnover. Justin Coleman came off the bench to score 21 points and dish out five assists. Riley Norris controlled the glass with 16 rebounds.

-- Texas Tech won a 65-63 decision over Oklahoma as a four-point home underdog last night, handing the Sooners consecutive defeats for the first time this year. The Red Raiders and Crimson Tide still have work to do, but they’d almost certainly hear their names called if Selection Sunday was today.

-- Kentucky is a 17-point home favorite tonight vs. Tennessee at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. The Wildcats will be looking to avenge a loss in Knoxville a few weeks ago when they had a 21-point lead at one point.

-- Minnesota is a 10-point home underdog tonight vs. Maryland at The Barn. This game will tip at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on The Big Ten Network. The Gophers have covered the spread in six straight games in which they were listed as underdogs of 9.5 points or more.

-- Loyal readers have heard me discuss what a disappointment the Mike Anderson Era has been at Arkansas. Bud-Walton Arena might have hit rock bottom last night when Auburn came into Fayetteville and won 90-86 as a 16.5-point road underdog. The Tigers hooked up money-line backers with a 12/1 return (risk $100 to win $1,200).

-- With its 57-53 win at Georgia on Tuesday night, Florida moved from No. 31 in the RPI up to No. 27. The Gators are only 2-7 against the Top 50, but they are 7-8 versus the Top 100. Mike White’s team has a pair of excellent non-conference wins over West Virginia and State Joseph’s, and it has swept the season series from both Georgia and Ole Miss. They also have a home win over LSU and just one loss to a team outside of the Top 100 (at Tennessee). In fact, UF has just two defeats outside the Top 50, a one-point loss at Vandy being the other.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects of the Detroit Tigers......

1) Michael Fulmer, P-- Acquired from Mets in the Cespedes trade.

4) Christin Stewart, OF-- Chosen with pick they got when Max Scherzer bolted.

5) JaCoby Jones, SS-- LSU alum acquired from Pirates for Joakim Soria.

7) Joe Jimenez, P-- 126 strikeouts in 88 innings in relief in three seasons.

8) Dixon Machado, SS-- Got 68 ABs with the big club last season.

12) Buck Farmer, P-- 0-5, 8.15 in 50 major league innings so far.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but......

13) Albany 82, Stony Brook 70-- Had a fun time watching my alma mater end Stony Brook's 18-game winning streak; highlight of night was when a kid dressed as a banana came out of the stands during a timeout and made a layup, foul shot and 3-pointer in 0:30 to win a prize, I'm not sure what, but he banked in his 3-pointer at the buzzer to win his prize. First conference losss for Stony Brook in front of a large, loud crowd-- rare night out for me during hoop season and a fun one.

12) Duke 74, North Carolina 73-- Got home in time to see most of this; Duke lost Matt Jones early, played only two subs anyway-- how does Duke only have seven players they trust? Now two of those seven are hurt, so freshman Chase Jeter will have to play some. Carolina was 1-13 behind the arc-- there is no great team right now, they all have major flaws, which will make March a fascinating month.

11) Alabama 76, LSU 69-- You could make a case for Avery Johnson as national coach of the year; right now they're an NCAA tourney team and no one, I mean no one had them as that back in the fall. No one. Tough loss for LSU and CBS, which has to want Ben Simmons in the NCAAs pretty badly, but their resume is borderline at best.

10) Texas Tech 65, Oklahoma 63-- Sooners lost three of last four games after a 19-2 start; they were 6-23 on arc, are 22-79 on arc in last three losses. Tubby Smith has his Red Raiders headed towards the NCAA bubble.

9) St John's 80, DePaul 65-- First Big East win for coach Chris Mullin.

8) St Peter's 70, Manhattan 69-- This was a makeup game; Peacocks play another game tonight, at Quinnipiac, very unuusal for a college team.

7) Get well soon Chris Bosh, who has trouble with blood clots-- he does an ad on TV with Arnold Palmer and Kevin Nealon for Xarelto, a blood thinner. We hope he is feeling well enough to play again soon.

6) State Senate in Tennessee passed a bill making it OK for people to have a skunk as a pet-- the Tennessee house hasn't voted on the bill yet. I think the whole thing stinks, and no, I am not making any of that up.

5) University of Cincinnati is campaigning to join the Big X; if they do, another team has to go to too, to give the Big X an even number of teams. Memphis?

4) Carolina Panthers signed JJ Jansen to a 5-year, $5.5M contract; who is he, you ask? JJ Jansen is the Carolina long snapper, a critical yet obscure position. There are guys we've rarely heard of who play a long time in the NFL as long snappers.

3) Daytime TV is awful, just putrid. ESPN should be ashamed of themselves for the garbage they put on the air. I'm listening to more music now during the day, but when preseason baseball starts in 13 days, that will make afternoons a lot more fun.

2) NFL Combine is next week; not sure if that is interesting TV or not, but it is very important for NFL teams to learn about players they may or may not draft. Stuff like Geno Smith playing with his cellphone during team interviews- thats a red flag that the guy isn't the person you want playing the most important position on the field.

1) Jim Brown/Michael Jordan share a birthday- February 17. Very strong pairing of sports birthdays right there. I know a couple guys who would try to have sex with their wife on May 17 to heighten their chance of their kid sharing a birthday with those two legends. Seriously, they would. I feel bad for their wives.
