Preview: Jayhawks (25-4) at Longhorns (19-10)
Date: February 29, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

After extending its spectacular run of Big 12 titles, Kansas can now turn its focus to wrapping up an outright crown for the eighth time in the last dozen years.

The second-ranked Jayhawks just need to avoid becoming the next upset victim on No. 25 Texas' home floor Monday night.

Kansas (25-4, 13-3) clinched at least a share of its 12th consecutive Big 12 regular-season championship with a 67-58 win over Texas Tech on Saturday and is now one shy of matching UCLA's record from 1967-79.

"Sometimes winning is a relief and losing is the end of the Earth," coach Bill Self said. "This feels better than a relief. I'm really proud of our kids. They've really tried hard and they've given us what they've got."

The Jayhawks need only to beat the Longhorns (19-10, 10-6) or No. 17 Iowa State on Saturday to keep this season's title to themselves. The first game in that closing set has them visiting a team that knocked off No. 3 Oklahoma 76-63 on Saturday.

"It is big for us, but we feel like we are a good team and we are capable of games like this every time we step out on the floor. We are excited, but it is a quick turnaround (before the Kansas game)," Longhorns senior guard Javan Felix said.

The matchup with the Jayhawks will mark the fourth straight home game against a Top 25 opponent for Texas, which went 2-1 in its previous three. The Longhorns beat then-No. 10 West Virginia 85-78 on Feb. 16 and is 4-1 at home against ranked teams this season, including a victory over then-No. 3 North Carolina on Dec. 12.

They can become the first team since Kansas in its 2008 NCAA championship run to knock off a pair of top-three opponents in back-to-back games. The Jayhawks beat No. 1 North Carolina in the national semifinals and second-ranked Memphis in the title game.

Texas, though, has just one win in its last 10 games against Kansas, and the Jayhawks have been ranked no lower than 14th in those matchups. The Longhorns lost 76-67 in their Jan. 23 meeting.

Kansas has won its past two road matchups with Top 25 opponents - including a 76-72 win over then-No. 3 Oklahoma on Feb. 13 - after dropping its first two this season.

Texas leading scorer Isaiah Taylor (15.5 ppg) has tallied 23 points in each of the past two visits from Kansas with his team splitting those games. The junior guard has a combined 37 in his past two games and led the way with 18 in the upset of the Sooners despite missing 10 of 15 shots.

Jayhawks leading scorer Perry Ellis (16.1) contributed eight points on 4-of-13 shooting Saturday, his first single-digit performance since Nov. 25. Svi Mykhailiuk had a team-best 17 off the bench, one shy of tying his career best.

Ellis had 26 points against Texas last month, one shy of matching a season high, and has a combined 54 in his last two games against the Longhorns. Wayne Selden Jr. scored 19 in the latest matchup but has totaled nine points on 4-of-15 shooting in his past two games.

Preview: Orange (19-10) at Tar Heels (23-6)
Date: February 29, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

North Carolina heads into the final week of ACC play in search of its first regular-season championship in four years.

A return home should increase the seventh-ranked Tar Heels' chances at gaining sole possession of first place in the ACC on Monday night against the Orange.

With two games left in the regular season, North Carolina (23-6, 12-4) is tied with Miami atop the conference, one game ahead of Virginia and Louisville. The Tar Heels beat the Hurricanes 96-71 on Feb. 20 and would own the tiebreaker for the top seed in the conference tournament should those two finish even, but they lost to both the Cardinals and Cavaliers.

North Carolina fell 79-74 at third-ranked Virginia on Saturday.

"I think they were the actors and we were the reactors all night," coach Roy Williams said.

The Tar Heels have had no troubles dictating things in Chapel Hill, where they're 14-1 while outscoring opponents by an average of 19.1 points.

Brice Johnson, a contender for conference player of the year, is averaging 21.6 points and 12.6 rebounds while shooting 66.2 percent from the floor over the last five games there.

He had 16 points and eight assists - double his previous career high - when the Tar Heels visited Syracuse (19-10, 9-7) last month. Johnson took advantage of the Orange's 2-3 zone by setting up in the middle and finding Justin Jackson and Isaiah Hicks for dunks and layups in North Carolina's 84-73 win that spoiled Jim Boeheim's return from suspension.

Hicks' 21 points are seven more than he's scored against anyone else this season.

The Tar Heels have their eyes on the ACC's top seed but can at least clinch one of the conference's four double byes with a win in this one. Syracuse is still in the mix for two days off at the Verizon Center, a game behind potential No. 4 seeds Duke and Notre Dame but with tiebreakers over both.

The Blue Devils and Fighting Irish only have home games left, though, while the Orange play twice away from the Carrier Dome. Syracuse has won three of five true road games since losing its first four.

The Orange's first trip to Chapel Hill on Jan. 26, 2015, was going well for a half, but a five-point lead quickly evaporated as the Tar Heels scored 58 second-half points in a 93-83 win. Marcus Paige had 22 points while Nate Britt, Kennedy Meeks and Johnson all had 17 with Johnson making all six of his field goals.

Michael Gbinije finished with 16 and five assists in that one and had 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting against UNC last month, but posted a career-high 34 while connecting on 8 of 13 from beyond the arc in Saturday's 75-66 win over North Carolina State.

"It just came down to Mike having to put us on his back," Boeheim said. "He had a tremendous game, probably as good as any senior as ever had (on Senior Day), as I can recall."

Gbinije's big day made up for another bad one from Trevor Cooney, who has totaled eight points while missing 15 of 17 shots over his last two games.

Cooney has averaged 27.5 points over his last two against the Tar Heels.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Oakland A's.......

1) Franklin Barreto, SS-- Will be 20-year old playing in AA Texas League/

2) Sean Manaea, P-- One concern is he has been hurt a lot, but he has skills.

3) Matt Chapman, 3B-- Cal State Fullerton alum could be in Oakland next year.

6) Matt Olson, 1B/OF-- Has 310 walks in 1,957 minor league plate appearances.

8) Dillon Overton, P-- Went 5-2, 3.06 in hitter-friendly Texas League. Not bad.

12) Bubba Derby, P-- San Diego State alum had 47 K's in 37 IP last year.

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

13) Boston College's athletic program may make money, but on the field, its move to the ACC has been a complete debacle. Eagles are 0-16 in ACC basketball games- in football, the Eagles were 0-8 in ACC play. This is not good. Hasn't happened in one of the major conferences since World War II.

12) Up until this season, Dwight Howard had earned $144,726,223 in salary as an NBA player; assuming he makes roughly the same $21M he made last year, that puts him around $166M for his NBA career, just in salary. Not bad, so it was surprising when Howard showed his gratitude this week......by firing his agent. No bueno.

John Wall and DeAndre Jordan have also fired the same agent within last six months, claiming he doesn't do enough for them, off the court. Being an agent must be fun.

11) Burger King sells hot dogs now? Why? The two Burger Kings closest to my house both went out of business- its been a while since I've been to one. I don't have best diet in America, but if I ever go to Burger King to buy a weiner, God help me.

10) So Duke's Grayson Allen gets away with tripping two opponents on purpose and also getting a technical foul AFTER he fouled out at Louisville- Where is Coach K the educator? Shouldn't the school sit Allen down for being a total jerk? What if one of Kentucky's players did that? Media would want the book thrown at him.

I don't think the ACC should've suspended the kid, but Coach K should've stepped up and sat the kid for a game, for his own sake. But because Duke has zero despth, if they sit Allen, they're basically forfeiting that game, so you know that won't happen.

9) I'll give Duke credit for this; in their last 19 NCAA tournaments, they've been a #1 or a #2 seed 16 times- thats quite an accomplishment, to be that good for that long.

8) Dave Dombrowski replaced Ben Cherington as Red Sox GM; both are married to past or present ESPN anchors- Dombrowski to Karie Ross, Cherington to Wendi Nix. Cherington went to Amherst, a fancy school, relied heavily on analytics and new school thinking. Dombrowski went to Western Michigan, a good ol' state school!!!! Red Sox wised up and will use a more traditional approach under Dombrowski.

People who go to fancy schools should do more important stuff than running ballclubs.

7) There is such a thing as the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament- this year was the 38th one. 567 people entered and competed. Thought you'd like to know.

6) Iowa Hawkeyes lost at Ohio State Sunday, their 4th loss in five games; since it won the Big 14 tournament in 2006, Iowa is 2-9 in conference tournament games, 1-2 in NCAA tourney games. Iowa has four seniors in its nucleus- if they flop again this March, it could be a while before they're back in the NCAA tournament.

5) Wide receivers averaged 4.56 in their 40-yard dashes this week at the Combine, slowest average time in many years; not by much, but slowest nonetheless.

4) Of the top 10 college basketball teams last week, eight of them lost this week.

3) Per capita, Utah has the most plastic surgeons of any state in the country.

2) Ian Desmond gets $8M to play for the Rangers this year; they're rumored to be using him in LF. Desmond may be firing his agent soon, too.

1) Lebron James didn't play at Washington Sunday; I'd hate to be a guy who brought his kid(s) to the game (it ain't cheap) and then Lebron doesn't play because he is "resting". If he is hurt, say so. People would understand. But lot of teams utilize this tiered pricing, where it costs more to see the better teams play, and guys rest?

Without Lebron, the Cavaliers are nothing special (3-12 the last two years).

Game of the Day: Kansas at Texas
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The red-hot Jayhawks have won nine straight, but their eight game cover streak ended Saturday vs. Texas Tech.

Kansas Jayhawks at Texas Longhorns (+1.5, OFF)

Second-ranked Kansas has clinched at least a share of the Big 12 regular-season title for the 12th straight season and turns its focus on making it an outright crown when it visits No. 25 Texas on Monday. The Jayhawks clinched the title with Saturday's 67-58 win over Texas Tech and are one title shy of UCLA's 13 straight crowns in the Pac-10 from 1967-79 under legendary coach John Wooden.

Kansas has won nine consecutive games but coach Bill Self is wary of the short turnaround associated with the road game against the Longhorns. "These guys deserve a little reward," Self said at a press conference. "I wish the Texas game was on a Tuesday or Wednesday but it's not. We'll be ready to play, doesn't guarantee we play well, but these guys need to have some fun and enjoy themselves." Texas has won three of its past four games and stands 14-2 at home after using a 22-0 run to rally for a 76-63 victory over No. 4 Oklahoma on Saturday. The Longhorns will be trying to even the season series after suffering a 76-67 setback at Kansas on Jan. 23.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The Jayhawks opened as 1.5-point road favorites over the Longhorns. The total is currently off the board.

INJURY REPORT:

Kansas - No injuries to report.

Texas - C C. Ridley (out indefinitely, foot).

POWER RANKINGS: Kansas (-17.95) - Texas (-11) + home court (-3) = Texas +3.95

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Texas has been a tough out at home all year, but the Jayhawks have been taking care of business on the road since that loss to Iowa State in late January. There’s certainly a lot more for the Longhorns to get up for in this one, but right now we’re seeing the square players back the hottest squad in the country. Average Joe Public looking for a play Monday night is going to see the top-ranked team as a short favorite and lay the chalk. We haven't seen any smart bets so far so it will be interesting to see if they want to get involved."

ABOUT KANSAS (25-4, 18-9 ATS, 9-18 O/U): The depth was on display against Texas Tech when sophomore guard Svi Mykhailiuk came off the bench to score 17 points and make all five of his 3-point attempts. Mykhailiuk (5.8 scoring average) ranks fourth on the team with 31 3-point baskets and Self and the Jayhawks are hoping his streaky nature will become a thing of the past. "We always believed in Svi. Every day, even in practice, we try to tell him to keep his confidence," junior guard Frank Mason III (13.6 average) told reporters. "We tell him he's a great player and a great shooter and try to keep him going because we know he is a huge part of our team."

ABOUT TEXAS (19-10, 15-13 ATS, 13-15 O/U): First-year coach Shaka Smart is one win away from a 20-win campaign that would mark the Longhorns' 16th such season in the last 17 campaigns. Junior point guard Isaiah Taylor had 18 points against the Sooners for his 23rd double-digit outing of the season and he leads the Longhorns in scoring (15.5) and assists (5.0). Senior center Prince Ibeh was superb in the first outing against Kansas by swatting away a career-best seven shots and he has a team-leading 55 rejections.

TRENDS:

* Kansas is 4-0 ATS in its last four road games.
* Texas is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 games overall.
* Under is 7-1 in Kansas' last eight games overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Texas' last five games overall.

CONSENSUS: The early bettors love Kansas in this Big 12 matchup, with 70 percent of wagers on the Jayhawks.

Top 25 Betting Recap
February 29, 2016

The Week of Feb. 22-28 of the 2015-16 NCAA Basketball betting season is in the books, and today, we're going to be taking a look at each of the Top 25 teams in the rankings and see how they did from an ATS perspective in this go around this past week.

(Results in parentheses represent SU Result/ATS Result)

1) Villanova (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)

The clock struck midnight for Villanova in Wednesday's loss at Xavier after three straight weeks at the top spot in the Top 25. They shouldn't fall too far, however. The Wildcats are just 2-3 ATS over their past five, but one constant has been on totals. The 'over' has hit in four in a row for 'Nova.

2) Kansas (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)
Kansas appears poised to move into the top spot of the AP rankings and Coaches' Poll after wins at Baylor and against Texas Tech. Saturday's non-cover snapped an 8-0 ATS run. The 'under' has cashed in seven of the past eight outings for the Jayhawks.

T3) Oklahoma (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)

The Sooners were roughed up in Austin against a desperate Texas team Saturday. Oklahoma has managed to cover just two times in the past seven games, while the 'under' has connected in six consecutive outings for the Sooners.

T3) Virginia (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Cavaliers went down to Miami and were tripped up on Big Monday, but there is no shame in a three-point loss against a top notch team. The Hoos bounced back with a win over ACC co-favorite UNC for their 22nd win of the season. Their 'over' Saturday snapped a seven-game 'under' streak.

5) Xavier (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Musketeers pulled off a win over top-ranked Villanova Wednesday, but were unable to carry over the momentum into their game at Seton Hall. The loss and non-cover snapped a 4-0 ATS run. Speaking of runs, the 'over' has cashed in four in a row for Xavier, and seven of the past nine.

6) Michigan State (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
Sparty is peaking at the right time, and that's bad news for the rest of the Big Ten and college basketball. Their 31-point rout of Penn State Sunday was their eighth win in nine tries, and ninth consecutive cover. The 'over' has also hit in six of the past seven for Tom Izzo's bunch

7) North Carolina (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
Lately there have been more questions than answers from the Tar Heels, as they are sputtering down the stretch and struggling on the road. That's a concern heading into March. UNC is just 4-4 SU over the past eight games, and they have covered just three of the past eight. UNC is also just 2-3 SU over the past five on the road, and 1-5 ATS over the past six away from the Dean Dome.

8) Iowa (0-2 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Hawkeyes are another team having difficulty on the road, as they suffered a costly loss at Ohio State Sunday to hurt their chances in the Big Ten. Iowa has dropped three in a row, and four of the past five, and they have failed to cover in five straight outings with Indiana looming Tuesday. The Hoosiers topped the Hawkeyes in Bloomington by an 85-78 score Feb. 11 to start this five-game non-cover slide.

9) Arizona (0-2 SU/0-2 ATS)
The Wildcats appeared to work out the kinks after a hiccup at the end of January. However, their road problems returned with a pair of setbacks against the Pac-12 mountain states teams in Colorado and Utah. Arizona is now a disappointing 1-4 ATS over the past five outings.

10) Maryland (0-1 SU/0-0-1 ATS)
The Terrapins are another team exhibiting the yips on the road lately. Maryland is 1-3 SU and 0-3-1 ATS over their past four games overall, and they have dropped each of their past two road outings, and four of their past six away from College Park.

11) Louisville (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The No. 11 spot remains a danger spot for teams, as Louisville is the latest team to suffer a loss in the spot. They're just 3-3 SU over their past six games, and 2-3-1 ATS in their past six since a self-imposed postseason ban was announced. Louisville's loss at Miami likely blew any chance of a regular season ACC title, which would have made things really interesting.

12) Miami-Florida (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Hurricanes are on their way up after a pair of key victories at home against Louisville and Virginia. They likely played their way onto at least the three line for when March Madness starts in a couple of weeks, and they can work their way further up the chain with wins at Notre Dame and Virginia Tech to close out the season, and a solid ACC Tournament run. Miami is 7-1 SU over the past eight games, and 6-2 ATS during the span.

13) Oregon (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Ducks won for the third straight game, finishing the regular season unbeaten at half. Their cover against Washington Sunday snapped a four-game non-cover skid. Their problems haven't been at home, it's on the road where Oregon has had their issues. The Ducks are 3-4 SU/ATS over the past seven away from Eugene.

14) West Virginia (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Mountaineers had a strong week, topping a good Iowa State team at home while covering handily on the road at Oklahoma State Saturday. It was a nice turnaround after dropped a pair of games last week. The Mountaineers still have work to do, as they're just 7-6 SU and 8-5 ATS over the past 13.

15) Duke (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Blue Devils dropped their second straight road game in Pittsburgh Sunday, as they were pounded by 14 in the Steel City. Duke hasn't covered in back-to-back games since a 3-0 ATS run from Jan. 2-9, a span of 13 games. The 'under' has hit in six straight for Duke, and eight of the past nine.

16) Kentucky (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Wildcats road woes continued Saturday, as they lost to a hungry Vanderbilt team in Nashville. Kentucky is just 3-8 SU/ATS in their past 11 games away from home. Remember that heading into their game Tuesday at Florida, their final road outing of the regular season.

17) Iowa State (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
It's an epidemic right now in college hoops, but few teams appear able to win regularly on the road. The Cyclones are no strange to road woes, as they were tripped up and swept by West Virginia Monday. Iowa State is now 4-5 SU and 3-6 ATS over the past nine games, while going 1-4 SU/ATS over their past five road contests.

18) Indiana (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
Indiana vaulted to the top of the conference standings with a road win at Illinois, and they can stay there with a win at Iowa next time out. They topped the skidding Hawkeyes 85-78 back on Feb. 11 while covering a 3 1/2-point number.

19) Baylor (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
Baylor showed some moxie with a win at Texas Christian Saturday, rebounding after a six-point home loss against Kansas Tuesday. They face a key game at Oklahoma Tuesday. The Sooners dumped the Bears by 10 points back on Jan. 23 in a high-scoring game. The 'over' has cashed in six of the past seven for Baylor.

20) Purdue (1-0 SU/1-0 ATS)
The Boilermakers picked up an important win at home against Maryland, pushing against the number. Purdue is still just 9-6 SU and 5-9-1 ATS over their past 15 games since the calendar turned to 2016.

21) Texas A&M (2-0 SU/1-1 ATS)

After a four-game skid, A&M has pieced together a nice four-game win streak, including a 15-point win at Mizzou Saturday. They head to Auburn Tuesday, as they look to solve their road woes. Despite their win in Columbia the Aggies are still just 1-4 SU/ATS over their past five road contests.

22) Utah (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Utes knocked off the Arizona schools for their fifth and sixth consecutive victories to move within a half-game of the top spot in the Pac-12 with one week of regular season play remaining. The Utes are also hot against the number, posting a perfect 5-0 ATS mark over their past five outings.

23) Notre Dame (1-1 SU/1-1 ATS)
The Irish, likely make Top 25 teams, have had some difficulties on the road lately. A 21-point drumming from Florida State in Tallahassee isn't great for their resume, and they're now 2-4 SU/ATS over their past six away from South Bend.

24) Southern Methodist (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
SMU had one of their better weeks in a while, sweeping Memphis and Tulane while covering in each outing. In fact, it is their first time covering back-to-back games since Jan. 13-17.

25) Texas (2-0 SU/2-0 ATS)
The Longhorns look like they want to stick around in the Top 25 after nearly slipping out. They blasted Oklahoma by 13 points Saturday, covering for the third time in four games, and improving to 10-2 ATS over their past 12 outings.
