Well-rested Eskimos eager to attack
Rohit Ponnaiya

Kenny Stafford and the Edmonton Eskimos will try to continue their dominance through the air as 3.5-point favorites against the BC Lions in CFL action on Thursday night.

Last week was crazy even by CFL standards with underdogs winning straight up in three of four games and losing by just single point in the other. But we're jumping back on the horse with our picks for Week 5.

Usually odds for all of the CFL games in the week drop by Tuesday but books have taken their time rolling out the lines for Week 5 with only Thursday's game on the board. We break down the odds for the Thursday night matchup on the west coast as the BC Lions, fresh off their first win of the season, host the Edmonton Eskimos.

EDMONTON ESKIMOS AT BC LIONS

ODDS: Edmonton -3, O/U: 53.5
TIME: Thursday, July 11, 10:00 p.m. ET

This is a rematch from Week 2, except the Eskimos will be on the road. That first game was highly anticipated with star quarterback Mike Reilly returning to Edmonton where he starred with the Eskimos for the last six years. But Reilly went bust in that game, completing just 14 for 27 passes for 149 yards in a 39-23 BC loss. While Reilly hasn't lived up to lofty expectations so far this season with the Lions he has completed 70 percent of his passes while throwing for an average of 316.7 yards in his three other games.

One thing that might help him this week is that BC is starting to establish a ground game and won't be so one-dimensional. In that previous matchup, Lions running back John White had just eight carries for 24 yards, but he's been getting more and more touches every week and carried the ball 22 for 138 yards against Toronto last Saturday.

That game against Toronto was interesting, BC pulled off their first win of the season but it took a last-second rouge to do so. A "rouge" might be one of the weirdest things in the CFL and occurs when a team misses a field goal but the ball goes through the end zone resulting in a single point for the kicking team. Suffice to say, BC sneaking by against a Toronto team that had been blown out in their first two games is not a good look.

The Lions defense has been a weak-spot this season allowing an average of 31.2 points per game. They limited Toronto's league-worst offense to 17 points last week which was just the first time this year they've held an opponent to fewer than 33 points.

The Eskimos should be able to shred the Lions secondary. Quarterback Trevor Harris has been on fire, completing 71.9 percent of his passes for 1086 yards and six touchdowns against zero interceptions. They also have a strong running game led by former USC Trojan CJ Gable who has 60 rushes for 347 yards.

Most surprisingly their defense, led by five-time CFL All-Star defensive tackle Almondo Sewell, has been outstanding, holding opponents to the fewest passing yards (180 per game) and total yards (270 per game) in the league.

The Eskimos are coming off a bye week after a loss on the road to the Blue Bombers in Week 3 and should be well-rested and fired up to come away with the win tonight. On the other hand, BC could be tired after only four days of rest since playing Saturday night in Toronto. The Eskimos are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against BC and should be able to take this one and cover as well.

PICK: Edmonton -3

Argos are 7-19 vs spread in their last 26 road games; they lost first three games this season, by 1-50-32 points, scoring only 12.7 ppg- Toronto (+11.5) lost their road opener 32-7 at Saskatchewan. Montreal (1-2) @ Ottawa (2-1)— Ottawa won six of last seven series games, but lost last meeting as a 16-point home favorite last August. Montreal covered three of its last five visits to Ottawa. TORONTO ARGONAUTS AT WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

ODDS: Winnipeg -14.5, 51.5
TIME: Friday, July 12, 8:30 p.m. ET

Winnipeg is looking just as good as advertised, going 3-0 straight up and ATS and coming off a victory on the road in Ottawa. Toronto is just as bad as advertised starting off 0-3.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson will get the start behind center for the second week in a row for the Argos. Last week he played well completing 25 of 33 passes for 303 yards but still couldn't consistently move the chains. Toronto's offense ranks at the bottom of the league in both yardage and scoring.

On defense, the Argos allow the most points (38 per game) and the second most yards (523 per game) in the league. They get destroyed both on the ground (giving up 141.3 yards per game) and through the air (381.7). Toronto will also be without DT Poop Johnson who was recently cut. He didn't start for the Argos but I thought he would have made a good No. 2 (sorry, couldn't resist).

Winnipeg has been winning with their defense and running game, holding opponents to a league low 19.3 points while piling up 134 yards per game on the ground. However, they average just 229.3 yards per game through the air, so they don't have the quick-strike ability of some of the other top teams in the CFL. I expect the Bombers to win but can't take them on the current spread of 14.5. Instead count on them to shut down Toronto's offense and take the Under on the game total.

PICK: Under 51.5

MONTREAL ALOUETTES AT OTTAWA REDBLACKS

ODDS: Ottawa -9, 51
TIME: Saturday, July 13, 4:00 p.m. ET

Nothing sums up the whacky world that is the CFL better than Montreal's 36-29 win over Hamilton just one week after losing 41-10 to the exact same team. The Als ran roughshod over the Ti-Cats on the back of tailback William Stanback who rumbled for 203 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Stanback is a 233-pound bruiser with sub-4.5 second speed and every time he's gotten touches he's produced. Montreal will have Vernon Adams Jr. at QB and he's a dangerous scrambler that gained 60 yards on six carries last week. With Stanback and Adams threatening with the ground game the Redblacks front seven will be kept honest.

Ottawa is coming off a home loss to the Blue Bombers where they were dismantled by a clinical Bombers side. Their running game was stuffed against Winnipeg and penalties also cost them 110 yards. Quarterback Dominique Davis' two picks didn't help.

As bad as Montreal is, they are 8-2 ATS over their last 10 games on the road. Ottawa has struggled to cover against inferior opponents, going 2-6 ATS in their previous eight contests versus teams with a losing record. With the Als coming off a big win, back them to keep things close. Take them and the points.

PICK: Montreal +9

CALGARY STAMPEDERS AT HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

ODDS: Hamilton -4, 53
TIME: Saturday, July 13, 7:00 p.m. ET

Hamilton was on the ugly side of that upset loss to Montreal and should be plenty motivated for this one. Calgary on the other hand is coming off a huge upset win, and rout, over Saskatchewan on the road.

Incumbent Calgary QB Nick Arbuckle continues to impress in Bo Levi-Mitchell's absense, completing 19 of 22 passes for 262 yards against the Roughriders. On the other side of the ball, DB Tre Roberson has been incredible for the Stamps, racking up five interceptions through the first three games.

That said, this Hamilton offense led by Jeremiah Masoli is a juggernaut and is first in the league in yardage (456 yards per game) and scoring (39.2 points per game). They should be able to pile up yardage against a Calgary defense that struggled in the first two games of the season. While the Ti-Cats also have the highest rated scoring defense in the CFL, they have yet to play an offense of Calgary's caliber. Take the Over on the total.

-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 SU record in Week 5
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 ATS record in Week 5
-- The 'Over/under' went 2-2 in Week 5

Year To Date

-- Favorites are 13-6 SU overall
-- Underdogs are 10-9 ATS overall
-- Home teams are 11-8 SU overall
-- Away teams are 10-9 ATS overall
-- The 'Over' is 10-9 overall

Analysis

For the second consecutive week Montreal (2-2) picked up a huge victory as a big underdog, winning outright in Ottawa (2-2) by a 36-19 score as 8 1/2-point underdogs. They're 3-1 ATS this season, all as eight-point 'dogs or more. The 'over' has also connected in three of their four games overall.

For the Red Blacks, they lost outright for the second consecutive weekend as home favorites, but this one was a lot more shocking than Week 4. The RedBlacks have now failed to cover in three straight outings. Defense has been the biggest issue for Ottawa, as they have allowed at least 28 points in all four of their games. The 'over' is 3-1 as a result. The RedBlacks are now just 2-7 ATS across the past nine against losing teams, too.

Winnipeg (4-0) rolled up a 48-21 victory against Toronto (0-4) in a game which ended up about how everyone expected. Surprisingly, the Blue Bombers were 'just' a 15-point favorite, and they easily covered. In fact, Winnipeg had a 37-6 lead by halftime and put it on cruise control. The Bombers have scored 28 or more points in each of their four games, and they're a perfect 4-0 ATS overall.

The Argonauts posted their highest point total of the season (21), but that still didn't make up for their awful defense. They have yielded 32 or more points in three of their four outings. They're 1-3 ATS overall.

Edmonton (3-1) routed the BC Lions (1-4) by a 33-6 count, as the Eskimos improved to 3-5 ATS in the past eight after a bye week. The Esks are an impresive 6-2 ATS in the past eight meetings against the Lions, however.

Speaking of the Lions, their only win came on a single as time expired against hapless Toronto last week. They're 1-4 SU/ATS in five games overall, and it doesn't get any easier with a home-and-home on tap against Saskatchewan (1-3), a team with plenty of offense.

In the marquee matchup of the weekend, Hamilton (4-1) handled their business against Calgary (2-2), who continues to adjust to life without QB Bo Levi Mitchell (pectoral). The Stampeders, normally strong against the number, have stumbled out to a 1-3 ATS start.

The Tiger-Cats bounced back from a loss to the Alouettes last week, and are now 4-1 SU/ATS. For Hamilton, the under is now 3-0 in their three home games, and the over is 2-0 in two outings on the road.

Team Betting Notes

-- The Argos will travel to Calgary to meet an angry Stamps side on Thursday night in Southern Alberta. Toronto has failed to cover in seven of the past eight games overall, and they're 6-20 ATS in the past 26 on the road. The Stamps are 2-5 ATS in the past seven against losing teams, but 7-1 ATS in the past eight in this series. The under is 9-3 in the past 12 meetings in Calgary.

-- The RedBlacks and Blue Bombers hook up in Winnipeg on Friday night, and the scoreboard operator better be ready for a lot of action. Ottawa has managed a 26-10 ATS mark across their past 36 road games, but they're just 1-4 ATS in the past five overall. The Bombers are 5-0 ATS in the past five home games, and 37-18-1 ATS in the past 56 games overall. Winnipeg is also 5-1 ATS in the past six in this series.

-- The Esks and Als hook up on Saturday afternoon in Montreal. Edmonton has covered in just one of their past five games on the road, and they're 3-8 ATS in the past 11 games played in Week 6. The Als are a perfect 7-0 ATS in their past seven games on a Saturday. They're also 7-1 ATS in the past eight against teams iwth a winning overall record, and 4-0 ATS in the past four home outings. However, the Esks have covered five straight trips to Montreal, and they're 8-3 ATS in the past 11 meetings overall in this series. The over is also 5-1-1 in the past seven battles in Montreal, and 12-3-1 in the past 16 meetings overall.

-- The Lions limp into Regina to take on the Roughriders in a battle between two teams with a combined record of 2-7 SU. BC is 1-4 ATS in the past five road games, 2-9 ATS in the past 11 against losing sides and 1-7 ATS in the past eight overall. They're also 1-5 ATS in the past six inside the West Division. On the flip side, the Riders are 7-3 ATS in the past 10 against the West, while going 12-5 ATS in the past 17 following a straight-up loss. They're 4-1 ATS in the past five after a bye, too. In this series, the under is 9-2-1 in the past 12 battles in Regina, and 41-18-1 in the past 60 in this series, too.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 6

Week 5 Betting Recap

The Edmonton Eskimos kicked off Week 5 of the CFL regular season with last Thursday’s 33-6 rout over British Columbia closing as three-point road favorites. On Friday night, the Winnipeg Bombers remained perfect on the year both straight-up and against the spread after hammering Toronto 48-21 as heavy 15-point favorites at home.

Saturday’s CFL doubleheader started with Montreal stunning the Ottawa RedBlacks 36-19 as nine-point road underdogs. Later that day, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats got past Calgary 30-23 as four-point favorites at home to hold onto first place in the East Division title race.

Thursday, July 18

Toronto Argonauts (0-4 SU, 1-3 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS)

Point-spread:
Total:

Game Overview

Toronto is still searching for its first victory of the season behind an offense that has only scored a grand total of 59 points in its first four games. The Argonauts’ defense has not been all that much better with a points-allowed average of 49.5. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson got the start at quarterback in Friday’s loss.

He completed just 56.4 percent of his 39 passing attempts for 388 yards and three scores and he was also picked off twice. Toronto gained 65 yards running the ball on 14 attempts.

The Stampeders fell to .500 with Saturday’s loss to Hamilton and two games off the pace in the West Division standings. Nick Arbuckle continues to fill in for an injured Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback. He put up some big numbers against the Tiger-Cats with 368 yards passing while completing 24-of-40 passing attempts, but he could not get the offense into the end zone through the air. Calgary’s rushing attack was almost nonexistent with 27 yards on nine carries.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has won 10 of its last 11 games against Toronto SU and it has a 7-1 record ATS in the last eight meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six matchups in this inter-division clash.

Friday, July 19

Ottawa Roughriders (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS)

Point-spread:
Total:

Game Overview

Two weeks ago, Ottawa was on the wrong end of a 29-14 loss to Winnipeg closing as a three-point home favorite. The total stayed UNDER the 54-point closing line. Last week’s stunning loss to Montreal as a heavy home favorite went OVER 51 ½ points and the total has gone OVER in three of the RedBlacks’ first four games.

That game was 9-9 at halftime before they were outscored by 17 points in the second half. Quarterback Dominique Davis scored a pair of touchdowns running the ball.

The Blue Bombers’ strong start can be attributed to an offense that is averaging 34.5 points a game. They have also gotten some strong play from a defense that leads the CFL points allowed (19.8). They jumped out to a 21-0 lead against Toronto in the first quarter and cruised to their fourth win on the year.

QB Matt Nichols bounced back from a Week 4 injury to throw for 209 yards and three touchdowns in Friday’s romp.

Betting Trends

-- The Blue Bombers have a 5-1 edge both SU and ATS in its last six games against Ottawa. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six meetings overall and in six of the last nine meetings in Winnipeg.

Saturday, July 20

Edmonton Eskimos (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS at Montreal Alouettes (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS)

Point-spread:
Total:

Game Overview

Edmonton opened the season with a 32-25 victory over Montreal, but it could not cover as an eight-point favorite at home. The total went OVER 49 ½-point total line in that game. In Thursday’s 27-point win against BC, the Eskimos took a 16-3 lead into halftime. Trevor Harris went a highly efficient 22-for-28 throwing the ball for 276 passing yards and two scores. CJ Gable anchored the running game with 68 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Following a SU 0-2 start, Montreal is coming off back-to-back upsets as a heavy underdog. It beat Hamilton 36-29 in Week 4 as a 13 ½-point underdog at home ahead of Saturday’s upset on the road against Ottawa. The Alouettes got a career day from Vernon Adams Jr. at quarterback with 327 yards passing and two scoring strikes. William Stanback had another strong outing running the ball with 100 yards on 18 carries.

Betting Trends

-- Including the win in Week 1, Edmonton is a perfect 5-0 SU in its last five games against Montreal. It also has a perfect 5-0 record SU and ATS in its last five road games in this inter-division tilt. The total has gone OVER in five of the last six matchups.

British Columbia Lions (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-3 SU, 2-2 ATS)
Point-spread:
Total:

Game Overview

High expectations have been met with a very disappointing performance in BC. The arrival of Mike Reilly at quarterback has failed to invigorate an offense that is averaging just 20.5 points per game. He was held to 157 yards passing in last Thursday’s loss to Edmonton with John White rushing for 53 yards on 11 attempts in the team’s 210 yards of total offense. The Lions’ defense has allowed an average of 31.6 points in five games.

The Roughriders are coming off a Week 4 bye after losing to Calgary 37-10 the week before as five-point home favorites. The total stayed UNDER 51 ½ points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in three of their first four outings. Saturday will be the first meeting in a home-and-home series against BC. Cody Fajardo has gotten the call at quarterback for an injured Zach Collaros. He has thrown for 945 yards and four touchdowns against two interceptions.

Betting Trends

-- The Lions have a 7-3 edge both SU and ATS in this West Division matchup over the past 10 meetings. They have also won four of the last six meetings SU in Saskatchewan. The total stayed UNDER in 10 of the last 13 meetings at Mosaic Stadium.

WNBA Betting Recap - 7/9-7/15
July 16, 2019
By Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (Tuesday, July 9 through Monday, July 15)

-- Favorites went 9-7 straight up (SU)
-- Favorites/underdogs went 8-8 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home/road teams went 8-8 SU
-- Home teams went 9-7 ATS
-- The 'under' went 9-7

Season Totals To Date

-- Favorites are 56-44 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs 58-39-3 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams are 57-43 SU
-- Road teams are 51-46-3 ATS
-- The 'under' is 59-41

Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (5-11 SU, 7-9 ATS) has come alive with three victories over the past four outings, and covers in four in a row before an overtime setback at home against Los Angeles (9-7 SU, 8-7-1 ATS) on Sunday. The under has connected in four of the past five for the Dream, too.

-- As far as the Sparks are concerned, they have won five of the past six, and they're 5-1 ATS during the impressive span, too. After an 0-3 ATS run on the road, Los Angeles have covered each of their past two away from home.

-- Chicago (9-8 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) has won and covered back-to-back games, and they're an impressive 4-1 ATS over the past five outings. They're also a solid 3-3 SU over the past six on the road, while going a strong 4-1-1 ATS during the solid stretch. The over has also cashed in five straight outings on the road for the Sky.

-- After showing signs of life, Dallas (5-11 SU, 8-8 ATS) is back to struggling again. They're just 1-4 SU/ATS across the past five outings, and a lack of offense plus struggles on defense has been the recipe for losing.

-- Indiana (6-12 SU, 9-9 ATS) have dropped three in a row since their impressive 20-point win in Dallas on July 5. They have also failed to cover in back-to-back games after a 3-0 ATS run. It won't get any easier with a rough schedule coming up over the next five.

-- Las Vegas (11-5 SU, 6-10 ATS) have rattled off five consecutive victories in a row, including a key revenge game and showdown in Washington (9-6 SU, 8-7 ATS) over the weekend, avenging an embarrassing 23-point loss to the Mystics on June 20. The Aces are still struggling against the number, however, going just 3-7 ATS across the past 10.

-- Speaking of the Mystics, they have fallen on hard times after a 9-3 SU/8-4 ATS start. They have dropped three in a row and failed to cover in each, allowing 91.3 points per game (PPG) during the span. As such, the 'over' has connected in all three outings.

-- Minnesota (10-7 SU, 10-6-1 ATS) have scratched and clawed their way to second play in the Western standings, just 1 1/2 games back of Vegas. The Lynx have caught fire lately, winning and covering four of the past five. Total bettors are happy with them, too, as the 'under' has hit in four consecutive outings.

-- Consistency continues to elude New York (7-10 SU, 7-9-1 ATS), as they have dropped and failed to cover three in a row after a four-game winning streak from June 28-July 5, including three straight wins on the road. The Liberty are playing shoddy defense again, and that's the key to their losing ways lately.

-- Phoenix (7-8 SU, 6-8-1 ATS) won an impressive game in D.C., topping the Mystics by 23 points on July 10. However, they failed to capture the momentum, losing games in Connecticut and Minnesota both by at least 13 points. After a 3-0 ATS run from June 23-30, the Mercury are a dismal 1-4 ATS across the past five.

-- As far as the defending WNBA champs are concerned, Seattle (10-8 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) heads into the new week with a game in Minnesota on Wednesday. The Storm have won and covered two in a row, but they have yet to win and cover in three straight so far this season. The under is 3-3 over the past six outings, but 12-5-1 in 18 games overall.

Betting Recap - Week 5
Joe Williams

League Betting Notes

This Week

-- Favorites went 3-1 SU in Week 5
-- Favorites went 3-1 ATS in Week 5

David Schwab

PREVIEW
ARBUCKLE, STAMPS SET TO HOST CONFIDENT ARGOS
CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY — One sole Canadian Football League team is without a victory so far in 2019, and they hope to change their fortunes on the road.

“We’ve shown some sparks in the second half,” Argonauts head coach Corey Chamblin said. “But we’ve got to be ready to go for all sixty minutes.”

The winless Toronto Argonauts get another crack at earning their first victory of the season when they visit the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium Thursday night.

The Argonauts have allowed the most points of all CFL teams this season and have allowed more than 32 points in all but one of their losses in 2019. Their most recent loss was a 48-21 drubbing against the league-best Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Despite the piling losses, the Double Blue still feel the best is yet to come.

“I think there’s a lot more out there,” Argos quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson said. “We left a lot of yards on table. We didn’t play our best early. We still have that herky jerky, on and off game right now. So, once we put it altogether I think it’s going to be really fun to watch.

“We killed ourselves in the game (against Winnipeg) with a lot of two and outs and turnovers,” receiver Derel Walker said. “Just not being able to allow ourselves to stay on the field.”

Meanwhile, the defending Grey Cup Champion Stampeders are coming off their second loss of the season. The Stamps dropped a 30-23 game to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats five days ago. But quarterback Nick Arbuckle is already raring to get back onto the field.

“It’s good in that after you lose a game, any game, you can’t wait to get out on the field and make up for it,” Arbuckle said. “With a short week you can do it that much faster.”

“Last game, we started off pretty well and then took turns messing up,’’ Stampeders receiver Eric Rogers said. “All three phases. Special teams sputtered there in the second quarter, then in the third the offence slowed down and when we needed a stop in the fourth we couldn’t get it.”

One guy who could help get the offence back on track is receiver Juwan Brescacin. The 26-year old will return to the lineup Thursday after missing games due to injury. In two games this season, Brescacin has four catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. The Mississauga, Ont. native is chomping at the bit to play again.

“I feel good,” Brescacin said. “I feel like I had a pretty good week of practice. Especially coming off an injury for two weeks. I’m just looking forward to playing.”

Joining Brescacin into this week’s lineup is Montreal-born receiver Hergy Magala and fellow Canadian and offensive lineman David Brown. American defensive backs Lorenzo Jerome and Brandon Smith will also suit up along with defensive lineman Azeem Victor.

Lineman Justin Lawrence will also start at centre for the Stamps Thursday. The Edmonton native backed up Ryan Sceviour at guard. With centre Ucambre Williams on the injured list, there’s a hole to fill at centre. Lawrence says he’s played guard for most of his college career but feels he could be a fit in his position.

“I definitely have the body for a centre,” Lawrence said. “Ever since I started playing it, just as my most permanent position, it’s become more natural for me.”

Toronto made some changes on its depth chart for Thursday’s game. Canadian linebacker Justin Herdman-Reed will start at middle linebacker for the Argos, moving Micah Awe from middle to the Will. Matthew Boateng also will start at defensive back instead of Anthony Covington.

International receiver Rodney Smith will get the nod over Llevi Noel. Noel has caught 21 passes for 199 yards, but fought off a couple of drops in Week 5, including one that resulted in an interception.

BY THE NUMBERS

388 — Argos quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for that many yards versus Winnipeg last week, in addition to three touchdowns.

12 — The Stampeders have allowed 12 sacks through their first four games of the season. In their first four games last year, Calgary allowed only five.

5 — Calgary Stampeders defensive back Tre Roberson has that many interceptions through four games this year. He’s on pace to break the league single-season record of 15 set by Al Brennan in 1972.

Kickoff is at 9 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN 2, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

GAME RECAP
STAMPEDERS KEEP ARGOS WINLESS IN DEFENSIVE DRIVEN VICTORY
CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY — The Toronto Argonauts will continue the search for their first win of the season after falling 26-16 to the Stampeders in Calgary on Thursday night.

A promising start by either side of the ball for the Argos had them keeping pace with the Stamps. However, endurance proved to be a strength of the Stamps despite a competitive defensive performance put forth by the Two-Tone Blue.

Both defences combined for six interceptions and five quarterback sacks.

In his first game dawning the Double Blue, Tyler Crapigna got the Argos on the board first with a 50-yard field goal. The former Saskatchewan Roughrider sat out the entire 2018 campaign after suffering an injury in training camp and Thursday’s game was the kicker’s first game back since.

After a promising drive that saw the Argonauts moving the ball, backed by a defensive front that tallied three sacks up to this point, Calgary’s Brandon Smith turned the tide on Toronto by jumping in front of a McLeod Bethel-Thompson pass towards the end of the first quarter.

A few short plays later after being set up with positive field position, and Nick Arbuckle connected with Juwan Brescacin for his second touchdown reception of the year.

Arbuckle passed for 191 yards as he completed 20 of his 30 pass attempts. His two touchdowns would be matched by two interceptions by the young pivot.

Special teams ensured the continued momentum shift in favour of Calgary after Fraser Sopik flew in off the edge for the block on a punt attempt by the Argos.

The ensuing drive had the ball placed on Toronto’s 35-yard line, resulting in a Rene Paredes field goal from 30 yards out to extend the Stamps lead to seven.

In the second quarter, Chris Rainey surpassed Keith Stokes and moved into 10th all-time in return yards.

Later in the quarter, as both defences dug in their heels, Arbuckle worked his offence deep into the Toronto end of the field. However, wanting to take it into the end zone, the young Stamps’ pivot lobbed a ball up into the waiting hands of Alden Darby.

With less than a minute and a half to work with, Bethel-Thompson marched the Argos offence downfield with seven straight completed passes, including the touchdown connection with Armanti Edwards. After a roughing the passer call on the conversion, the Argos couldn’t cap off their scoring drive with a 2-point conversion on two attempts.

Tre Roberson continues his dominance from the corner position for Calgary. Luckily for Bethel-Thompson, it wasn’t an interception to the league-leader. After completing a pass to Edwards, linebacker Cory Greenwood lodged the ball loose, opening the way for Roberson to scoop and dash his way to the end zone to push the Stamps up 19-9.

Minutes later, Raheem Wilson snagged his first interception of his CFL career.

Making up for lost time after going down to injury against the BC Lions in Week 3, Juwan Brescacin caught his second touchdown of the game following Wilson’s interception as 22 of Calgary’s 26 points had come off of turnovers at this point.

Brescacin caught five passes for 64 yards along with his two touchdowns.

Toronto managed to piece together another drive of seven straight completions by Bethel-Thompson, capped off with a touchdown by James Wilder Jr., his second receiving touchdown of the season.

Crapigna’s convert narrowed Calgary’s lead, bringing the Argos to within ten points late in the third quarter.

A game filled with turnovers by either side continued to be dictated by the defence in the final seconds of the third quarter. Toronto’s Micah Awe stepped in front of a pass and having himself a lengthy return before being tripped up. Moments later, the seesaw effect continued as Cory Greenwood got his mitts on the ball, his first interception in his five-year career in the league. He’d also add a fumble recovery to his stat line in the fourth quarter.

All in all, Bethel Thompson finished the game throwing four interceptions.

With the win, Calgary improves their record to above .500 (3-2) while the Argos remain through six weeks of the regular season.

The Stampeders will be back in action next Thursday, taking on the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the nation’s capital. As for the Argonauts, they’ll look for their first win of the season in Edmonton when they kickoff against the Eskimos in Week 7’s edition of Friday Night Football.
