STANBACK LEADS ALOUETTES TO VICTORY OVER TIGER-CATS

MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 36-29 on Thursday night, winning their first game of the 2019 campaign.


Montreal put on a show for Alouettes fans who showed up to Percival Molson Stadium for the team’s home opener with impressive outings from their quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. and running back William Stanback.


Stanback had an exceptional game for the Als, finding the end zone three times and accumulating 203 yards on the ground. He became the first Alouette running back to surpass 200 rushing yards since Mike Pringle did so in 1998. He also hauled in 46 yards through the air.


Adams Jr. scored a rushing touchdown, connected on 14 of 25 passes and threw for 202 yards. His counterpart Jeremiah Masoli threw for 401 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Tiger-Cats.


Ticats reciever Jaelon Acklin hauled in eight passes for a game-high 120 yards, followed by Brandon Banks who caught seven passes for 86 yards.


With Sean Thomas Erlington leaving the game in the first quarter, former Argonaut Anthony Coombs found himself involved in the offence, accumulating six carries for 51 yards and hauling in five passes for 61 yards through the air,


The win also marked head coach Khari Jones’ first as Montreal’s bench boss as the Alouettes improved to 1-2 on the season.


The Montreal Alouettes struck first on Thursday night. A 46-yard gain from William Stanback moved the Als to the Hamilton seven-yard line but the Ticats defence kept the home team out of the end zone. Boris Bede made his 10-yard field goal, as Montreal settled for three points.


Montreal’s start to the game was as hot as the weather, and it continued on the Ticats first offensive drive. First, the defence stuffed Sean Thomas Erlington for no gain. Then Masoli tossed an interception to Glenn Love, who picked off the pass intended for Brandon Banks.


And that turnover turned into six points, as Stanback pushed himself into the end zone for the major score. The 11-play, 52-yard drive, along with Bede’s convert, gave the Alouettes a 10-0 lead with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter.


There was bad news for the Ticats on their next possession, however, as Thomas Erlington had to be carried off the field by his teammates. He suffered a lower body injury after taking a hit from Tommie Campbell and did not return.


Jaelon Acklin scored the opening points for the Ticats, the receiver’s first CFL touchdown. He hauled in a Masoli pass right at the corner pylon, showing great concentration to keep his feet in bounds for the score. Hamilton attempted a two-point convert, Masoli kept and tried to find the end zone himself, but it was unsuccessful. The seven-play, 54-yard scoring drive saw back-to-back catches from Luke Tasker, who missed the last two games with in injury, and cut the Alouettes lead to 10-6.


Hajrullahu booted a 36-yard field goal for Hamilton to make it a one-point game to start the second quarter.


The Ticats made the Alouettes pay for a turnover later in the quarter as Ja’Gared Davis came up with a Stanback fumble. The Tabbies moved down the field quickly, aided by a 59-yard gain to a wide-open Mike Jones, to set up a 26-yard field goal from Hajrullahu. That score put Hamilton ahead of Montreal 12-10 with just over eight minutes left in the first half.


Hajrullahu tacked on another field goal as the second quarter clock ticked down, extending the Tiger-Cats lead to 15-10.


Montreal countered with a field goal of their own as Bede connected on his 43-yard attempt. Hamilton still led 15-12 with under two minutes to go. And the final drive of the first half ended with yet another field goal, this one was a 14-yarder from Hajrullahu, to extend the Ticats lead to 18-10.


Adams Jr. and the Alouettes started the second half moving the chains down the field. But they had to settle for a 24-yard field goal from Bede instead of a touchdown, cutting Hamilton’s lead to 18-16.


Montreal continued to push against the Tiger-Cats, stringing together drives in the third quarter and not allowing Hamilton to get any offence generated.


A defensive pass interference call against Tunde Adeleke, who was covering Quan Bray in the end zone, brought the Alouettes down to Hamilton’s one-yard line. Adams Jr.’s first attempt to sneak in was unsuccessful and on the second attempt, the Als pivot tossed to Stanback in the back field and the tailback ran in to score his second touchdown of the night.


That score, and an unsuccessful two-point convert, gave the Alouettes the lead back (22-18) with just under three minutes left in the third frame.


The Alouettes defence stood strong, holding Hamilton’s offence off the scoreboard complete in the third quarter.


To start the final frame, head coach Khari Jones challenged that there was defensive pass interference against Delvin Breaux, who was covering Eugene Lewis in the end zone, and the challenge was successful, bringing the Alouettes down to the one-yard line once again.


Adams Jr. plunged into the end zone for the score, capping off a three-play, 50-yard drive. Bede connected on his point-after and Montreal extended their lead to 29-18.


After Hamilton was held to a two-and-out, the Alouettes kept the momentum going. The offence was moving and Adams Jr. tossed a 35-yard bomb to Lewis, bringing the Als down into the Ticats five-yard line. Tiger-Cats head coach Orlondo Steinauer challenged the catch and his challenge was successful. It was ruled that Lewis did not have possession of the ball before falling out of bounds and the Alouettes had to move back.


But that didn’t stop the Alouettes from continuing their drive.


Stanback continued to dominate the game, scoring his third touchdown on the night two plays later. The 21-yard run, and the point-after, increased the Alouettes lead to 36-18 with 9:40 left in the fourth quarter.


But the Tiger-Cats weren’t ready to give up just yet. Masoli connected with rookie Marcus Tucker, who ran into the end zone untouched for the major score. Tucker caught the two-point convert and the Ticats cut the Alouettes lead to 36-26.


Hamilton added another field goal, cutting Montreal’s lead to 36-29 with 1:03 left in the game.


That would be the final scoring play of the night, as the Alouettes won their first of the 2019 campaign while the Tiger-Cats dropped their first of the year.


Next up for the Montreal Alouettes is a matchup against the REDBLACKS in Ottawa while the Tiger-Cats host the Calgary Stampeders.

Game Overview


The Blue Bombers have now won eight of their last 10 games both SU and ATS with last Thursday’s victory in their home opener. The total stayed UNDER 57 ½ points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven outings. Wide receiver Lucky Whitehead made the most of his CFL debut in front of the hometown crowd with a 75 yard catch for a score in the first half of that game followed by a 41-yard catch and run in the third quarter.


Quarterback Matt Nichols completed 13 of his 21 passing attempts for 200 yards and three touchdowns against one interception. He has thrown for 384 yards and six scores in his first two games this year.


Ottawa is coming off a bye week after scoring a combined 76 points in its first two games against Calgary on the road and Saskatchewan at home. It failed to cover as a 4 ½-point home favorite in the three-point win against the Roughriders in Week 2 and the total went OVER the closing line in each of the RedBlacks’ wins.


The total has gone OVER in four of their last five home games. Dominique Davis has thrown for 630 yards and three scores so far, but he has been picked off four times as well.

REDBLACKS, BOMBERS PUT UNDEFEATED RECORDS ON THE LINE

OTTAWA — When the dust settles, one team will remain undefeated for the first time in some time.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers look to improve their record to 3-0 against another undefeated team in the Canadian Football League, the Ottawa REDBLACKS, in a Friday night matchup at TD Place in Ottawa.


The REDBLACKS are coming off a bye week and haven’t played since their high scoring affair in Week 2 versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders, which resulted in a 44-41 victory in Regina. Meanwhile, Winnipeg edged Edmonton 28-21 in their Week 3 game at home. Quarterback Matt Nichols threw three touchdowns for 200 yards in the win.


Bombers receiver Chris Matthews is happy with how his offence has been clicking — they have 61 points through two games — but feels there’s more to come.


“As an offence, there’s a whole lot of room for us to grow. There’s so much stuff,” Matthews told BlueBombers.com. “We’re 2-0 right now, but there’s no telling where we can go. We have a lot, but we really haven’t evolved yet.”


Matthews’ debut in 2019 was a quiet one, hauling in just two passes for 16 yards. He was overshadowed by emerging star Lucky Whitehead, who caught touchdown passes of 75 and 41 yards while racking up 155 yards on seven catches.


On the defensive side, Winnipeg has also allowed the second-fewest points among CFL teams with 44. Defensive back Marcus Sayles also thinks his team can still improve.


“We just want to be more mentally focused on what we messed up on,” Sayles said. “Our defence isn’t at its peak. We messed up a lot. Granted, we still played good and we’ve gotten our wins but we can be so much better at everything that we’ve done.


As for the REDBLACKS, they have a number of former Blue Bombers set to play against their former team, including quarterback Dominique Davis. But the pivot won’t let friendships with former teammates get in the way.


“It’s family outside the lines but inside the lines things are different,” Davis said. “Each team’s trying to get a W and I just hope we come out with a W.”


Defensive back Chris Randle is also a former Bomber. The 31-year old spent five seasons in Winnipeg before joining Ottawa this past off-season.


“I saw (the game) on my schedule so I got my mind ready for it,” Randle said. “It’s going to be an exciting time to go out there and play the next game.”


The Bombers will be without 30-year old linebacker Adam Bighill Friday. The Montesano, Wash. native missed practice earlier in the week and is now on his team’s one-game injured list. He suited up Monday, but Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea felt it was better to rest him.


“It’s probably the best decision to give him a little more time,” O’Shea said. “He probably didn’t have that final gear that he probably needs.”


He’ll be replaced by linebacker Kyrie Wilson, who moves over from his usual WILL linebacker position, while Jesse Briggs and Nick Temple will take Wilson’s place.


Despite coming off the bye week, the REDBLACKS will have to adapt with a couple of players out of the lineup and on the one-game injured list, including linebacker Nicolas Boulay and defensive lineman Michael Klassen.


The silver lining, according to REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell? Local depth. Five of the seven players entering the lineup are Canadian, including offensive lineman Philippe Gagnon, slotback Nate Behar, and linebacker Mickael Cote.


“We have some pretty good players that aren’t playing,” Campbell said. “Good news right now that we have Canadian depth.”

STREVELER, BOMBERS STAY PERFECT WITH WIN OVER REDBLACKS

OTTAWA — Chris Streveler rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another, leading the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 29-14 win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday night at Ottawa’s TD Place.


Bombers starting quarterback Matt Nichols was sidelined in the third quarter and replaced by Streveler. The REDBLACKS nearly erased an 18-point deficit in the second half, but Streveler’s one-yard touchdown with 9:42 remaining ensured victory for the visitors.


The loss was Ottawa’s first of the season, while the Bombers improve to 3-0 to lead the CFL West Division.


Nichols threw for 262 yards on 16-of-20 passing with a touchdown — an 82-yard catch-and-run by Nic Demski on the team’s first possession — before exiting. Drew Wolitarsky also caught a touchdown pass, while Andrew Harris led the game with 80 rushing yards on 18 carries.


The REDBLACKS’ offence struggled throughout the night, managing just 14 first downs and 236 net yards. Dominique Davis completed 21 of 36 attempts for 234 yards and two interceptions and was also sacked twice.


Lewis Ward made both of his field goal attempts, including a career-high 53-yarder, while corner Jonathan Rose scored on a fumble return touchdown in the third quarter to provide Ottawa’s points. RJ Harris caught six passes for 87 yards to lead his team.


The Bombers’ offence got off to a quick start, finding the end zone on just their second offensive play of the game when Demski found himself wide open behind the REDBLACKS’ secondary on the way to an 82-yard catch-and-run.


A successful fake punt on third down set up a promising drive for Ottawa in response, especially after Davis connected with Caleb Holley for a 39-yard pickup deep into Winnipeg territory. But Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea challenged for offensive pass interference and won, negating the pickup and eventually leading to a punt.


While Ottawa’s offence failed to generate much in the face of pressure, sophomore kicker Ward was able to split the uprights on a 53-yard field goal, improving to 10-for-10 on the season and also setting a career-long. The successful kick was Ward’s 58th in a row dating back to the start of the 2018 season.


On the other side, the Bomber offence continued to be a handful. On a drive that was extended by roughing the quarterback penalty against George Uko, Nichols would connect with Darvin Adams and Wolitarsky before turning things over to short-yardage quarterback Streveler. The sophomore pivot was able to escape pressure and throw a two-yard touchdown pass to Wolitarsky, extending Winnipeg’s lead to 15-4.


Looking to build on an 11-point lead in the second half, Nichols and company got to work quickly out of the break. The veteran pivot hit Adams for gains of 21 and 23 yards, followed by a Rose pass interference penalty down to the 15. After a five-yard run by Streveler on third down, the short-yardage quarterback finished the drive once again, scoring from a yard out to make it 22-4 in favour of Winnipeg.


An injury to Nichols began to swing momentum in the game. Nichols took off for an 18-yard run before taking a hit from Ottawa linebacker Kevin Brown, suffering what appeared to be an injury to the head/neck area on the play. Nichols was replaced by Streveler, whose first down pass was deflected and intercepted by Anthony Cioffi.


Ward’s second field goal of the game cut the deficit to 22-7, but that wasn’t all. On the Bombers’ next offensive play, Charles Nelson fumbled after a short completion, and REDBLACKS corner Rose scooped up the ball and returned it 39 yards for a defensive touchdown. The play was upheld by automatic review on the turnover, while O’Shea challenged the call himself but lost, upholding the major and making it an eight-point game heading to the fourth.


After a couple of rare misses from Medlock in the kicking department, he atoned for himself in the fourth quarter. Looking to pin the Bombers deep, Medlock tracked his own punt and got to it first knocking the ball out of bounds for possession at the five-yard-line.


Harris was denied at the one, but Streveler would score his second rushing touchdown of the game and third total major of the night, providing a much-needed insurance marker to make it 29-14.


Davis would throw a second interception — this one to Chandler Fenner — as the REDBLACKS’ comeback fell short.


After leaving the game in the third quarter, Nichols was later spotted on the Bombers’ sideline in street apparel. The team also lost receiver Chris Matthews in the first half.


It was a tough night for REDBLACKS running back Mossis Madu, who rushed only six times for 18 yards against a stingy Winnipeg front seven.


Willie Jefferson had his first sack as a Blue Bomber on defence, while Winston Rose also chipped in with an interception and Marcus Sayles recovered a fumble. Mike Miller had five special teams tackles, tying a CFL record.


A week after breaking out with 155 receiving yards, Lucky Whitehead was held to just one catch on three targets for 16 yards. Demski finished with a game-high 105 receiving yards on four catches, while star pass-catcher Adams had five catches for 55 yards.


The Bombers look to keep their perfect record intact when they host the Argos on July 12, while the REDBLACKS aim to rebound when they host the Alouettes on July 13.

13) Few years ago I was in Las Vegas during the All-Star break, was staying at Planet Hollywood. I’m playing video poker at the bar in the sportsbook during Home Run Derby, and for over an hour, all I heard was Chris Berman’s annoying “back!!! back!!! back!!!” calling the home runs.


I mean, its freakin’ Home Run Derby; stop getting excited every time one is hit.


Finally I offered the bartender $50 if he would mute the TV’s; he laughed. Turned out to be a good thing for me; I escaped the sportsbook and Berman’s voice, went out and played blackjack in the casino and won $100, so guess I should thank Berman for being annoying.


12) Miami Marlins have won two World Series, but have never been in first place on July 4th.


Teams with longest droughts since they were last in first place on the 4th of July: Toronto and Colorado, who were both in first place on July 4, 2000.


11) In 1997, a guy named Bubba Wells fouled out of an NBA game in three minutes. Really.


Wells went to Austin Peay, played 39 games for the Mavericks in 1997-98, scoring 3.3 ppg. On December 29, 1997 in Chicago, he scored a basket and fouled out in three minutes.


Should be noted that he also scored 21 in a game against the Spurs later that season.


10) Sam Mitchell, an analyst on NBA TV for the summer league games, told a story about how coach Bill Fitch would have the bench filmed during exhibition games, to see which guys were paying attention to the game and rooting for their teammates when they weren’t playing.


Every basketball team has a few guys who don’t play much; they can’t be a distraction, have to be good teammates.


9) I’ve said this many times; if you like the NBA, go to Las Vegas in July and watch the summer league— you’ll probably meet some players or coaches if you want to. It is affordable and it is fun, plus the gyms are air conditioned when it is 100 or so degrees outside.


8) Bryce Harper got his 200th career home run and his 1,000 career hit at the same time in the 6th inning Wednesday; a nitwit fan in Atlanta cost himself some swag by throwing the ball back on the field. For trivia buffs, Bryce Wilson was the pitcher.


7) Baseball stuff:

— Tigers put P Victor Alcantara (wisdom teeth) on IL.

6) Monday afternoon, Detroit’s Matthew Boyd became the first pitcher EVER to strike out 13 batters, walk none, but not finish the 6th inning- he allowed nine hits, four runs in 5.1 IP.


5) Washington Nationals are wearing Montreal Expo throwback uniforms Saturday, which raises the question if Montreal will be getting an expansion team soon, or will the Rays move there? Sounds like a strong possibility that one of those things will happen.


4) Jimmer Fredette left the Warriors’ summer league team and isn’t with the team in Las Vegas; he played in the Warriors’ first two games in Sacramento this week, but apparently got some lucrative offers from foreign clubs and he doesn’t want to risk an injury.
3) All four Braves’ starting infielders homered Thursday night; the last time this Braves did that was September 19, 1961.


2) This year’s baseball schedule is odd; 12 games on the 4th of July, then only 13 games the next night, a Friday night. Next year will be easier, with July 4th on a Saturday. Once they expand to 32 teams, scheduling becomes way easier.


1) Whats the worst day to have a birthday? February 29? Christmas? July 3rd? January 2nd? July 5? Most of the people I asked about this chose Christmas as the worst day— everyone else gets presents too.


December 26th might be an underrated day to have a birthday; people can go to the mall and get stuff on sale- do those people get more gifts than other people?

Game Overview


The Lions’ defense has been torched for 108 points in the unexpected 0-3 start. It has given up at least 33 points in each of those first three games. Quarterback Mike Reilly has completed 72 of his 108 passing attempts for 827 yards and four touchdowns against three interceptions.


John White has anchored BC’s running game with 92 total yards rushing on 26 carries. Bryan Burnham had a big game catching the ball against Calgary with 10 receptions for 94 yards. Reilly completed at least one pass to seven different players in the losing effort.


Toronto is picking up where it left off last season after posting just four SU wins in 2018. The offense was shutout for three of four quarters with James Franklin taking most of the snaps at quarterback. He completed 20 of his 28 passing attempts for 224 yards, but he only tossed one touchdown against two interceptions. The Argonauts gained 97 yards rushing on 18 carries with James Wilder Jr. leading the way.

Game Overview


The Stampeders won for the first time this season following a loss to Ottawa in Week 1, but they may have lost their quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell for this contest. He left Saturday’s game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury and is playing status for this Saturday is up in the air.


Nick Arbuckle took his place and led the game-winning scoring drive. He went a perfect 9-for-9 throwing the ball for 93 yards, including a touchdown throw to Eric Rogers with less than a minute left on the clock. Rogers ended the game with nine receptions for 100 yards and three scores.


Saskatchewan posted its first SU victory of year behind quarterback Cody Fajardo, in place of an injured Zach Collaros. He made a strong case to retain the starting role even if Collaros was healthy with 430 yards passing and two touchdown throws.


He completed 24-of-31 passing attempts highlighted by four completions to Kyran Moore for 127 yards and a score. William Powell ran the ball 15 times for 77 yards as the team’s leading rusher.

ARGOS, LIONS BOTH LOOKING TO REBOUND IN TORONTO

TORONTO — The BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts are both looking to jump start their 2019 campaigns when the two meet at BMO Field on Saturday evening. Neither team has had an encouraging start to their respective seasons, but are certainly eyeing the win in Toronto.


BC quarterback Mike Reilly will make a bit of history on Saturday. He is slated to become the 26th player since 1950 to start 100 CFL regular season games at quarterback. However, the veteran has struggled against Toronto historically, as he is just 3-6 in nine meetings with the Boatmen.


The situation is much different for the Argos, as their quarterback is making only his eighth career CFL start. McLeod Bethel-Thompson will get the offence Saturday night. Opening day starter James Franklin finds himself on the six-game injured list after being shaken up in the team’s Week 3 loss to Saskatchewan.


Bethel-Thompson endeared himself to Argos fans with two fourth quarter game-winning drives in his first two starts last season. He failed to truly take control of the offence though, and Franklin closed out the season as the QB1.


The 31-year-old has plenty of weapons at his disposal, as Toronto has one of the best receiver groups on paper. Free agent signing Derel Walker joins the likes of S.J. Green and Armanti Edwards as the big targets for Bethel-Thompson.


“There’s so much juice out there,” Bethel-Thompson said to Argonauts.ca of the wide receivers. “There’s depth too. It’s just excitement and putting the ball where they can make a play. Not trying to do too much, but putting them in good positions. It’s just pure excitement.”


However, Walker has only been targeted 10 times through two games, and neither of the three big guns have a game with over 75 receiving yards yet. With Bethel-Thompson at the helm, one wonders if that could change.


The task for Reilly will be tough Saturday, as the Lions will be without the services of receiver Bryan Burnham. Burnham leads BC in receiving yards on the season with his 280, ranking him fifth in the league.


The Lions receiving corps still boasts the likes of Duron Carter (who has the same number of receptions as Burnham), as well as Canadians Lemar Durant and Shaq Johnson. Durant had a nice game against Calgary, hauling in all five passes thrown his way, accumulating 83 yards and finding the end zone.


“It’s a growing process and we understand that,” Lions head coach DeVone Claybrooks told BCLions.com. “You never look at the numbers at the beginning of the year, you only look at how you finish and that’s the only thing that really matters to us.”


Defensively, the Lions have been poor, with the team allowing more than 30 points in each of their first three games. They have only sacked the quarterback four times, but one senses it may only be a matter of time before the Lions defence figures it out.


Head Coach DeVone Claybrooks is regarded as a defensive guru, while defensive coordinator Rich Stubler has seen it all in the CFL while winning five Grey Cups as a DC.


“We’ve been harping on leadership,” defensive back T.J. Lee told BCLions.com. “Making sure those leaders are holding themselves accountable and making sure everyone’s putting in the extra work they need to make this team better. When you put in the hard work, that gives you confidence.”


The Argos defence has underwhelmed throughout their first two games. Although they did tighten it up in the second half of their Week 3 loss to Saskatchewan, only conceding six points in the second half, they will have their hands full with Reilly and the Lions.


“It’s always tough when you’re defending Mike,” Argos head coach Corey Chamblin said to Argonauts.ca. “Nevertheless, everything starts up front for us. Four, five, six, seven-man pressure, whatever it takes. We have to find a way to keep him in the pocket and disrupt his rhythm and timing.”


Saturday is Family Day at BMO Field, and it will be a family affair on the field as well. Twins Jordan and Justin Herdman-Reed will be squaring off, with the latter slated to start at linebacker for the Lions and the former a backup linebacker for the Argos. The duo from Winnipeg were teammates during their college careers at Simon Fraser University and have combined for 26 defensive plays this season.

SEEING ROUGE: LIONS LATE-GAME SINGLE ENOUGH TO TOP ARGOS

TORONTO – Lemar Durant led the way through the air and John White carried BC on the ground as the Lions outlasted the Toronto Argonauts 18-17 Saturday Night at BMO Field.


In one of the more bizarre finishes you will see, Sergio Castillo lined up for a 42-yard field goal with no time on the clock and pulled the kick wide left. The ball went through the endzone however, and the Lions earned a rouge and the win.


In what was a slow-progressing game, John White tallied 138 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries while Durant built on his hot start to 2019 with 9 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown in the Leos win.


Both teams entered Week 4 looking to earn their first victory of the season after dropping road games last weekend. The Argos fell behind early to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and never recovered. They lost the game and their starting quarterback, James Franklin, to a hamstring injury.


As for the Leos, they controlled all but the final seven minutes of their contest in Calgary, allowing the defending champs to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in a stunning come-from-behind win.


McLeod Bethel-Thompson got the start for Toronto with Franklin parked on the six-game injured list. After stalling on his first two possessions, the third-year pivot go the Argos on the board first by setting up a 31-yard Drew Brown field goal after completing a 45-yard pass to Armanti Edwards on a go route.


The rest of the first quarter went on without incident and both offences were held in check.


The clubs traded interceptions on consecutive possessions to begin the second frame, with the Lions earning their first three points off a 14-yard field goal by Castillo to tie the game at the 8:22 mark.


The rain-soaked BMO field for the majority of the first half which forced both clubs to lean on their tailbacks. Lions RB John White IV finished the first half with 8 carries for 81 yards.


The Lions finally posted the first major of the game with just under 10 minutes remaining when Reilly spotted SB Durant for a 29-yard touchdown. Durant pulled away from DB Abdul Kanneh, who bit on a pump fake, and hauled in the corner-route uncontested.


Durant’s fourth touchdown of the season was aided by a James Wilder Jr. fumble which was recovered by Lions DB TJ Lee at the Argonauts’ 45-yard line.


With the Lions taking their first lead of the game and the Argos offence sputtering, Toronto took some of the momentum back with four minutes left in the third quarter thanks to their special teams. Former Lions RB Chris Rainey fielded a punt deep in his own territory, broke a tackle and bounced outside, bursting 79-yards for an Argos touchdown. They would miss the convert and the Lions remained up 10-9.


The Lions, who had trouble getting traction in the first half, marched right back to answer the Argos score with White capping off an impressive 9-play, 75-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown.


Now with an eight-point lead, the Lions defence held off the ensuing push by the Argos, stopping Wilder Jr. on a third down gamble inside the BC 40-yard line.


One last effort for the Argos took place when they scrimmaged from their own 52-yard line with 1:45 on the clock. Bethel-Thompson found Llevi Noel for a pair for a pair of first downs before spotting Wilder Jr. who powered his way into the endzone. SJ Green hauled in a two-piint conversion with 38 seconds left to tie the ball game.


An illegal kick on the ensuing kickoff gave the Lions great field position and Reilly did the rest, completing a pair of passes to set up the winning point off the Castillo missed field goal.


The Argonauts will take to the road next week as they visit Winnipeg to face the unbeaten Blue Bombers. The Lions, meanwhile, return home to host Reilly’s old mates from Edmonton on Thursday Night Football.

STAMPS SHOW 4TH QUARTER HORSEPOWER IN VICTORY

Coming off of a comeback win against the Lions, the Stampeders pieced together a well-rounded team win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium Saturday night, winning their second game of the season with a 37-10 victory.


With both Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell and Saskatchewan’s Zach Collaros out on injury, the Stamps and Riders’ Week 4 meeting was being considered the ‘Battle of the Backups’, and a battle indeed it was.


Nick Arbuckle followed up his nine-for-nine performance against the Lions in Week 3 with a strong performance in Regina. The 25-year-old completed 19 of 22 for 262 yards and two touchdowns.


It would also mark the first time that a pair of brothers faced off as coaches in a CFL regular season tilt with Dave and Craig Dickenson eyeing each other’s gameplan from opposing sidelines.


Running back Ka’Deem Carey opened the scoring for the Stamps after Arbuckle went four of five on Calgary’s opening drive.


Calgary did some serious clockwork in the first quarter with just over 12 minutes of ball possession.


Saskatchewan eventually got themselves on the board thanks to rookie kicker Gabriel Ferraro‘s 36-yard boot in the second quarter.


Rene Paredes went right down the pipe on Calgary’s following drive, reinstating the Stamps nine-point lead midway through the second quarter.


At the half, Calgary held onto their nine-point lead, heading into the lockerrooms with a 15-3 lead.


Arbuckle completed 79 per cent of his passes in the first 30 minutes of play, completing 11 of his 14 pass attempts for 132 yards. Calgary’s offence moved the ball with a balanced mix of run-pass plays, tripling up on first down plays with 17 (106 yards), compared to the Riders five (39 yards).


Saskatchewan got things rolling in the second half right off of the kickoff.


Loucheiz Purifoy took the second half return and immediately bolted to the opposite sideline. The Riders return-man would be forced out of bounds, but not before a 69-yard return.


A first down pass, followed up by a 10-yard rush by William Powell, helped set up a Fajardo plunge to get the Riders their first major of the night.


Late in the third quarter, despite a Jon Ryan punt that saw the football soar past Reggie Begelton, pinning the Stamps deep in their own end, Arbuckle made quick action to get the Stampeders progressing up the field, scoring a touchdown with an Arbuckle to Eric Rogers connection to cap a five-play drive. The touchdown marks Rogers fourth touchdown of the season.


Sooner or later, quarterbacks will begin to completely avoid Tre Roberson‘s side of the field. Until then, he’ll just continue to pick off passes. Saturday night, the second-year defensive back picked off Cody Fajardo twice, one coming in the early goings of the fourth quarter on Saskatchewan’s offensive drive following Rogers’ touchdown. Roberson made quick time to scamper along the sideline and take his fifth interception of the year to the house, increasing Calgary’s lead to 20.


Adding more cushion to their lead, while also sparking a smile across Bo Levi Mitchell‘s face, Arbuckle connected with Reggie Begelton in-stride for a 76-yard catch-and-run touchdown with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.


Begelton finished the game with four receptions for 102 yards.


With the game out of hand with just a few minutes remaining, Craig Dickenson elected to pull Fajardo, giving reps to first-year quarterback Isaac Harker. The Stampeders would end up getting their third interception of the night off of Harker, which would also mark Harker’s third INT of the season.


The Stampeders will remain on the road next week as they visit Hamilton to face the East Division-leading Tiger-Cats. The Roughriders will spend Week 5 on their first Bye of the season.

Analysis

Montreal (1-2) opened the week on Thursday night with a huge 36-29 win over Hamilton (3-1) in the home opener for the Alouettes, dealing QB Jeremiah Masoli and the high-flying Ti-Cats their first loss and non-cover. It was the biggest upset through the first month of the CFL regular season, as the Als cashed anywhere from +450 to +550 for those brave enough to select them on the moneyline. It's hard to imagine there were many takers after a 41-10 win by Hamilton over Montreal in Week 3.

The Alouettes are now 2-1 ATS and the 'over' has connected in two of their first three. The Ti-Cats were held to 29 points, their lowest point total since they opened the season with a 23-17 win over the Roughriders.

In the best matchup of the weekend, Winnipeg (3-0) flexed its muscle again in a 29-14 road victory against Ottawa (2-1), as the Blue Bombers improved to a perfect 3-0 ATS on the season, too, including 2-0 SU/ATS on the road. Winninpeg is averaging 31.0 points per game (PPG) in two road outings, too. The 14 points they allowed defensively was the lowest this season.

The RedBlacks entered the week with 38.0 PPG, but they were held well under their average. Defense continues to be a challenge for the RedBlacks, who have now allowed 32.7 PPG.

BC Lions (1-3) edged Toronto (0-3) for the 18-17 road victory as the 'under' easily connected. It was, by far, Toronto's best defensive effort of the season. After allowing 96 total points through the first two games, including 64 in Week 1 against the Ti-Cats, the 'under' has now cashed in back-to-back games for the Argos.

The low-scoring result was the first 'under' result after three straight overs to open the season. The Lions allowed 36.0 PPG in the first three outings, and they had scored 23 or more points in each of the contests, so the defensive battle was a departure from the norm. For the Argos, it was their first cover of the season, too.

Calgary (2-1) hit the road without QB Bo Levi Mitchell (pectoral), who is on the six-game injured list. QB Nick Arbuckle stepped in and steered the ship to a road win against Saskatchewan (1-3) by a comfortable 37-10 score. Arbuckle threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns, as the Stamps have now won two in a row. It was their first cover of the season, their highest point total of the season and their lowest defensive total allowed.

Team Betting Notes

-- On Thursday it will be the Eskimos traveling to British Columbia to take on the Lions. Neither of these teams have been particularly attractive against the number. The Esks are 0-4 ATS in the past four on the road, and 2-5 ATS in the past seven after a bye week.

-- The Lions are 1-6 ATS in their past seven games overall, and 1-4 ATS in the past five against West Division clubs. They're also 2-8 ATS in the past 10 in Week 5, for whatever that's worth. In this series, Edmonton is 5-2 ATS in the past seven meetings, but just 4-10 ATS in the past 14 trips to Vancouver. The 'over' is 5-0-1 in the past six meetings in this series.

-- The winless Argonauts travel to meet the high-flying Blue Bombers, and it wouldn't be surprising to see a spread in the high teens or even low 20's in this one. The Argos are 1-6 ATS in the past seven games overall, and 7-19 ATS in the past 26 on the road.

-- For the Blue Bombers, they're 9-2 ATS in the past 11 games overall dating back to last season. They're also 4-0 ATS in the past four games at home, while going 3-1-1 ATS in the past five against losing teams. In this series, the Argos are 0-6 ATS in the past six meetings, and 1-4-1 ATS in the past six trips to Winnipeg. The over is also 6-0 in the past six meetings, and 4-1 in the past five battles in Winnipeg.

-- On Saturday we get Montreal and Ottawa tangling in Canada's capital city. The Als have covered seven of the past eight overall, and they're 6-1 ATS in the past seven against winning teams and 8-2 ATS in the past 10 on the road.

-- The RedBlacks are 4-0 ATS in the past four against East teams, but just 2-6 ATS in the past eight against losing teams. Ottawa has managed a 10-3 ATS mark in the past 13 meetings in this series.

-- As far as the total is concerned in Montreal-Ottawa, it's all under all the time. The under is 7-0 in the past seven meetings. While the over is 4-1 in Montreal's past five, the under is 10-3 in Montreal's past 13 road outings. The Under is 13-4 in the past 17 for the RedBlacks against the East, while going 5-2 in the past seven against losing teams.

-- In Saturday's final game, Calgary and Hamilton tangle in what should be the best matchup of the weekend. The Ti-Cats are 6-18-3 ATS in the past 27 against winning teams, and 0-7-1 ATS in the past eight games in the month of July. In this series, Calgary is 6-1 ATS in the past seven meetings and 6-1 ATS in the past seven meetings in Hamilton. On the 4th of July, Montreal posted its first straight-up win of the season in Thursday night’s 36-29 upset against Hamilton as a heavy 13-point home underdog. This was the backend of an East Division home-and-home series.

In Friday’s CFL action, Winnipeg remained undefeated on the year with a 29-14 victory over Ottawa as a three-point road underdog. British Columbia edged Toronto 18-17 as an eight-point road favorite in Saturday’s early game ahead of Calgary’s 37-10 pasting of Saskatchewan as a five-point underdog on the road this past Saturday night.

Edmonton comes off a bye week looking for its first road win of the season. The Eskimos were upended by Winnipeg 28-21 in Week 3 as five-point road underdogs. The total stayed UNDER 57 ½ points in that loss after going OVER in their first two wins at home against Montreal and BC. Edmonton beat the Lions 39-23 in Week 2 as three-point favorites at home. Trevor Harris has thrown for 1,086 yards and six touchdowns against zero interceptions in his first three starts for the Eskimos as their new quarterback.

The Lions snapped a three-game losing streak with Saturday’s win. They were outscored by 30 points in those first three losses before squeezing past Toronto with the one-point win their last time out. Mike Reilly completed 23 of his 34 passing attempts in his last start for 272 passing yards and one score. He was also picked off once. BC got a big effort from John White running the ball with 138 rushing yards and one score on 22 carries.

Toronto is still looking for its first win of the season after losing 14 of 18 games SU in 2018. The Argonauts are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games played on the road. McLeod Bethel-Thompson put the ball up 33 times against BC on Saturday and he completed 25 of those passes for 303 yards and one touchdown. He also tossed an interception. Toronto was held to 41 yards rushing on 11 attempts. James Wilder Jr. has rushed for 105 yards on 22 carries this season.

The Blue Bombers are the only CFL team with a perfect record both SU and ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in their last two games after going OVER 50 ½ point in a 33-23 win against BC in Week 1 with the closing spread set as a PICK. Winnipeg quarterback Matt Nichols left Friday’s game in the third quarter with an apparent neck injury, but he remains optimistic that he will be able to go this Friday night. Chris Streveler took his place and he completed six of his eight passing attempts for 42 yards and a score.

The Alouettes stopped a two-game SU skid with last Thursday’s upset. The total went OVER 56 points against Hamilton and it has gone OVER in two of their first three games. Vernon Adams Jr. threw for 202 yards in that game after completing 14 of his 25 passing attempts. William Stanback was the top star on offense with 203 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on 22 carries. He now leads the CFL in that category with 357 yards on the ground and four scores on 44 carries.

Ottawa started the season with a road upset against Calgary followed by a wild 44-41 victory against Saskatchewan at home as a 4 ½-point favorite. The total stayed UNDER 54 points in the loss to Winnipeg after it went OVER in the RedBlacks’ first two games. Dominique Davis has started all three games at quarterback and he has thrown for 864 yards and three touchdowns, but he has also tossed six interceptions. He has completed 67.2 percent of his 119 passing attempts.

The defending CFL Champions played the part on Saturday with the lopsided victory against Saskatchewan despite the absence of quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell due to injury. In his place, Nick Arbuckle completed 19-of-22 passes for 262 yards and two scores. Reginald Begelton caught four passes for 61 yards and a score. Arbuckle completed at least one pass to nine different players. The Stampeders ran the ball 21 times for an additional 129 yards on the ground.

The Tiger-Cats fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with last Thursday’s loss as heavy road favorites. They beat Montreal 41-10 in the first meeting on June 28 as 12 ½-point favorites at home. The total went OVER 56 points in that second meeting after staying UNDER 56 ½ points in Week 3. Quarterback Jeramiah Masoli leads the CFL in passing after completing 94 of his 134 attempts for 1,325 yards in four games. He has seven touchdown throws against five interceptions.
