CFL
Armadillo's Write-Up

Week 15

Winnipeg (6-7) @ Ottawa (1-11)—RedBlacks’ first game was 36-28 (+3.5) loss at Winnipeg in Week 2, when Ottawa led 21-17 at half, then scored only 7 second half points. RedBlacks lost last nine games (3-6 vs spread), but in only three of those games did they trail by more than 5 points at the half- they’re 1-5 at home, 3-3 as home underdogs. Ottawa scored 8-7-5-7 points in its last four home games. Winnipeg lost last four games and six of last seven after a 5-1 start; they’re 3-3 SU on road, despite being underdog in all six games. They’re 2-2 vs spread when favored. Week 6 vs Roughriders was only game Ottawa outscored its opponents in second half. Five of last six Ottawa games stayed under total.

Calgary (11-2) @ Saskatchewan (9-4)—First meeting of season between rivals who will see lot of each other in next few weeks; Saskatchewan beat Calgary 35-13 in LY’s playoffs as they marched to Grey Cup title, just their third win in last 12 series games. Stampeders lost last two visits to Taylor Field 30-25/36-21 after winning last four visits before that; they’ve won seven of last eight games overall, with 31-15 loss at Montreal two weeks ago their only loss in six road games (5-1 as road favorite). Roughriders are 5-1 at home, with only loss to BC in Week 3; they’re switching to former Texas Tech QB Doege as they try to end recent 1-2 slide, with win in OT over Ottawa.

Edmonton (9-4) @ Toronto (4-8)—Argos lost four of last five games, one of which was 41-27 (+7.5) loss at Edmonton six weeks ago; Eskimos had five takeaways, ran ball for 152 yards in game they led 31-10 at the half. Win snapped Toronto’s 3-game series win streak, but Argos have lost four of last six visits here. This is first Toronto home game in five weeks; they’re 2-2 at home, and were underdog in three of those games. Eskimos are 2-3 in last five games after 7-1 start, losing last two road games, allowing 28-25 points at Calgary/Hamitlon; they’re 0-3 vs Edmonton, 9-1 vs everyone else. Five of six Edmonton road games stayed under total; three of last four Toronto games went over total.

BCLions (7-6) @ Hamilton (6-7)- TiCats won last four games after 2-7 start, winning last two weeks by combined total of 7 points; they’ve won last four games in their new stadium after losing two of first three there. Hamilton (+6.5) lost 36-29 at BC in Week 7, giving up 407 passing yards in game they led 19-17 at half. Lions won four of last six visits here; lost last two games overall, allowing 326 rushing yards; they’re 4-2 on road, with only losses 24-9 at Montreal, 14-7 at Calgary last week. Seven of last ten series games went over total, but five of last six BC games and five of last seven TiCat games stayed under. All four CFL games last weekend had totals of 27 or less points, kind of unusual.

CFL

Week 15

Offense kept to a minimum for traveling Stampeders

The Calgary Stampeders have been money for totals bettors over the past two seasons. In Calgary's past 12 road games, the team has a 1-11 over/under record.

Those 12 road games have seen the Stamps average 27 points while keeping opponents to 19 points per game.

The total is currently set for 47.

Redblacks giving home fans no excitement

It may be their inaugural season, but the Ottawa Redblacks are not doing anything on the field to attract fans. In their six home games this season, the Redblacks have averaged 9.8 points per game.

This has led to an over/under record of 1-5 with the past four games going under at the TD Place Stadium.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 15

September 30, 2014

Points were hard to come by in the normally prolific CFL last week with all four contests staying well UNDER the closing betting odds. Montreal got past Ottawa last Friday 15-7 as a 1 ½-point road favorite with the total staying UNDER 46 ½ points. In the second half of Friday’s double-header Edmonton blanked Saskatchewan 24-0 as a 5 ½-point favorite at home with the total staying UNDER 48 ½ points.

In the first of two Saturday matchups Hamilton grinded-out a 16-11 victory over Winnipeg as a two-point road underdog. The total in this game stayed UNDER 51. In the final game in Week 14 of the CFL regular season Calgary doubled-up British Columbia 14-7 as a 6 ½-point favorite at home. The total stayed UNDER a 47-point closing line this time around.

Friday, Oct. 3

Winnipeg (6-7 SU, 7-6 ATS) at Ottawa (1-11 SU, 4-8 ATS)

Point-spread: Ottawa -2 ½
Total: 45 ½

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers fell below .500 for the first time this season and they are riding a four-game straight-up losing streak into Friday’s game. Quarterback Drew Willy did start last week’s game and while he threw for 303 yards while completing 65.9 percent of his 41 passes, it did not translate to points on the board.

Ottawa’s offense fell back into its old ways after scoring 32 points in a Week 13 loss to Saskatchewan. The expansion RedBlacks have averaged 15 points per game this season, but they have failed to reach this total in six of their last eight games.

Betting Trends

The Blue Bombers won the first meeting this season in Week 2 of the regular season with a 36-28 victory as 3 ½-point home favorites. The total in that game went OVER the 53-point closing total line.

Calgary (11-2 SU, 9-4 ATS) at Saskatchewan (9-4 SU, 6-7 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -3 ½
Total: 47 ½

Game Overview

Calgary bounced back from a stunning Week 13 loss to Montreal on the road as a 6 ½-point favorite with last week’s win, but there has to some level of concern with an offense that has managed a total of 29 points in those two games after averaging 27.8 PPG this year. The much anticipated return of quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell may have to wait one more week before he is officially cleared to play.

It is obvious that the Roughriders’ issues at quarterback are largely responsible for their uninspired 1-2 SU mark (0-3 ATS) in their last three games. Tino Sunseri is probably not the answer to replace Darian Durant after hitting just 6-of-12 passes for 53 yards and an interception in last week’s dismal showing against Edmonton.

Betting Trends

Calgary has a dominating 9-3 SU edge in the last 12 meetings, but it is just 1-4-1 ATS in the last six games of this series. The total in this West Division rivalry has gone OVER in five of the last seven games played in Saskatchewan.

Saturday, Oct. 4

Edmonton (9-4 SU, 8-5 ATS) at Toronto (4-8 SU, 6-6 ATS)

Point-spread: Toronto -3 ½
Total: 53

Game Overview

The Eskimos have covered in their last three games and the total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five outings as the defense starts to regain its form for the stretch run of the regular season. This unit has allowed an average of 19.4 PPG over the course of 13 games, but that number jumps to 26.5 PPG in Edmonton’s last two games on the road.

Toronto comes off a bye to start its push towards another East Division title. It snapped a four-game SU losing streak in Week 13 with a 40-23 victory over British Columbia as a six-point road underdog. It was just the third time this season the Argonauts scored 35 or more points despite quarterback Ricky Ray leading the CFL in touchdown throws with 22.

Betting Trends

Edmonton has covered the spread in five of the last seven meetings and it is 6-3 SU in the last nine games against Toronto. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five games of this inter-division matchup.

British Columbia (7-6 SU, 6-7 ATS) at Hamilton (5-7 SU, 5-7ATS)

Point-spread: Hamilton -3
Total: 45

Game Overview

BC has fallen back a bit in the West Division playoff race with just two SU wins in its last five games. The Lions have been tough to bet on during this stretch with a 1-4 record ATS. The total has now stayed UNDER in five of their last six games behind an offense that continues to struggle to find the end zone.

The Tiger-Cats SU three-game winning streak (2-1 ATS) has them a half-game up on Montreal in the East Division title race despite still being two games below .500 on the year. Zach Collaros continues to have accuracy issues throwing the ball. This past week against Winnipeg he completed just 20-of-36 attempts for 182 yards.

Betting Trends

BC is just 2-7 ATS in its last nine games against the Tiger-Cats, but it has won four of the last five meetings SU. The total has stayed UNDER in eight of the last 11 meetings in Hamilton.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 15

October 4, 2014

League Betting Notes

-- Favorite/underdogs went 2-2 straight up in Week 15
-- Underdogs went 3-1 ATS in Week 15
-- Home teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 15
-- Road teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 15
-- The 'over' went 3-1 in Week 15

Team Betting Notes

-- It was back to a score-fest in CFL play in Week 15, as the first three games of the week each went 'over' the total after the 'under' was 3-1 last weekend.

-- The East Division continues to gain respect late in the season after an embarrassingly slow start. Toronto (5-8) did the division proud with a 33-32 shootout win over Edmonton (9-5). Toronto has won back-to-back games against West Division teams, and they are 3-1 ATS over the past four.

-- The loss for the Eskimos in Toronto was bad news, but they were able to cover for a fourth consecutive game.

-- The freefall continues to Winnipeg (6-8), and Friday's loss to expansion Ottawa (2-11) might have been rock bottom. After starting out 5-1 SU/ATS, the Blue Bombers are now an inexplicable 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS during the past eight games. It doesn't figure to get much better at Edmonton Oct. 13, either, although at least the Bombers will be rested after a bye.

-- Speaking of those upstart RedBlacks, while their overall win-loss record might not show it, they haven't been that bad. They have now covered three of the past four games, and they are 4-3 ATS in seven games at home this season. Unfortunately for Ottawa, their next two games are on the road.

-- Calgary (12-2) continues to take down all comers, and they have blown open a three-game (six-point) lead in the previously tight West Division. The Stamps haven't lost to a West Division team since Aug. 1, and they have covered seven of the past nine.

-- Hamilton (6-7) started out 2-7, but they have rattled off four consecutive victories to vault into first place in the East Division. They surprised BC Lions (7-7) with a fourth quarter TD and come-from-behind win.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 16

October 7, 2014

The plot continues to thicken in this season’s race to the CFL Grey Cup Playoffs with eight of the nine teams still very much in contention for one of the six spots.

Last week in CFL action, Ottawa got things started by stunning Winnipeg 42-20 as a 3 ½-point home underdog. The total easily went OVER the 44 ½-point closing line. Calgary padded its lead in the West Division race with a 31-24 victory against Saskatchewan as a six-point road favorite in last Friday’s other game. The total went OVER the 46-point line in that contest.

Saturday’s two games kicked things off with Toronto squeezing-out a much needed 33-32 win over Edmonton as a 3 ½-point home favorite with the total going OVER the 54-point line. Hamilton maintained its one-game lead in the East in a 19-17 grinder against British Columbia as a four-point home favorite. That total stayed UNDER the 44 ½-point closing line.

Friday, Oct. 10

Hamilton (6-7 SU, 5-8 ATS) at Toronto (5-8 SU, 6-7 ATS)

Point-spread: Toronto -3 ½
Total: 52 ½

Game Overview

Hamilton will now have to go on the road to get another important division win where it is just 1-5 straight-up (3-3 against the spread) this season. Tiger-Cats’ quarterback Zach Collaros threw for 367 yards against BC last week, but kicker Justin Medlock was the difference with five field goals on five attempts.

The Argonauts are well-positioned for a run at the division title with the majority of their remaining games at home; however they have failed to cover in three of their last four outings at the Rogers Centre. As good as Ricky Ray has been passing the ball this season with 3,430 yards and a league-high 24 touchdown throws, Toronto’s chances to win the East still hinge on improving a defense that is allowing 27.5 points per game.

Betting Trends

Hamilton has won four of the last five meetings SU, but it has failed to cover in four of its last six road games against Toronto. The total has gone OVER in four of the last five meetings at the Rogers Centre.

Saturday, Oct. 11

Ottawa (2-11 SU, 5-8 ATS) at British Columbia (7-7 SU, 7-7 ATS)

Point-spread: BC -9
Total: 44

Game Overview

The RedBlacks notched their second SU victory of the season with their biggest scoring output of the year. They had failed to cross the 10-point barrier in five of their previous six games and on the season Ottawa is averaging just 17.1 PPG. Jonathan Williams rushed for 180 yards on two scores in last week’s win.

The Lions are fading in the West Division race with three-straight losses in which they averaged just 15.7 PPG. The total has now stayed UNDER in six of their last seven games and in 11 of 14 games on the year. BC tallied a total of 11 yards rushing on six attempts in last week’s loss to Hamilton.

Betting Trends

BC won the first meeting this season with a 7-5 victory as a nine-point road favorite. The total for that game was set at 47 ½ points. The total has stayed UNDER in five of Ottawa’s last seven games and in six of the Lions’ last eight games at home.

Monday, Oct. 13

Saskatchewan (9-5 SU, 6-8 ATS) at Montreal (5-8 SU, 6-7 ATS)

Point-spread: Montreal -3 ½
Total: 47 ½

Game Overview

There is little doubt that Saskatchewan is in serious trouble at quarterback with the loss of Darian Durant a few weeks back. Tino Sunseri continues to get the call as his replacement, but the result has been just one SU win in the last four games with a costly 0-4 record ATS. The defense also has to share some of the blame after allowing an average of 28.8 PPG during this four-game stretch.

Montreal went into last week’s bye with four SU wins in its last five games to remain just a game back in the East Division race. It also covered ATS in four of those games and the total stayed UNDER in three of the contests. The Alouettes’ offense has finally shown some signs of life with quarterback Jonathan Crompton at the helm to average 24 PPG during this recent five-game run.

Betting Trends

The Roughriders have failed to cover in their last five games against Montreal and they are 4-10 SU in the last 14 meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in their last five road games against the Alouettes.

Winnipeg (6-8 SU, 7-7 ATS) at Edmonton (9-5 SU, 9-5 ATS)

Point-spread: Edmonton -7 ½
Total: 50 ½

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers have returned to the form that led to just three SU wins in 2013. They will bring a SU five-game losing streak into this matchup and they have failed to cover in their last four outings. They have averaged 13.3 PPG in their last three contests, while allowing 28 PPG on defense.

Edmonton is another team that has had its issues winning games lately with a SU 2-4 record in its last six tries, but the Eskimos have been friendly to bettors with a 4-0 mark ATS in their last four games. Mike Reilly was largely responsible for keeping last week’s game close with 272 yards passing and two scores while completing 75 percent of his 32 attempts.

Betting Trends

Winnipeg has posted a costly 1-5 record both SU and ATS in its last six games against the Eskimos and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five games that were played in Edmonton.

Team Betting Notes

-- Another week, another loss for Winnipeg (6-9). They're now 1-8 SU and 2-7 ATS over the past nine games after starting out 5-1 SU/ATS and actually sharing first place in the West Division at one point.

-- BCLions (8-7) got back on track with a 41-3 pasting of expansion Ottawa (2-12). The big trend for BC lately is the 'under', which has cashed in seven of the past eight games, and is 12-3 overall.

-- Edmonton (10-5) rebounded with a win over the Blue Bombers, and they have now covered five straight games after starting out 5-5 ATS in the first 10 games.

-- After starting the season 1-7 SU/2-6 ATS, Montreal (6-8) is suddenly on a roll. They have won five out of the past six, going 5-1 ATS during the span.

-- Saskatchewan (9-6) was smashed for the third straight games. They have now failed to cover in five straight games.

-- Toronto (6-8) has rattled off three straight wins to get into the thick of the East Division race. However, they have failed to cover back-to-back games since their cover Sept. 19 at BC. The 'over' has cashed in four straight for the Argos.
