Ti-Cats struggle ATS versus lowly Alouettes

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats, currently sitting second in the weak East Division with a 2-6 record (3-5 against the spread), are 1-point road faves at the equally-inept Montreal Alouettes (2-7 SU, 3-6 ATS) but are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings.

Ti-Cats backers have been left frustrated of late as the team has failed to cover the spread in four-straight games heading into Sunday's meeting with the Als.

Most shops have opened the as a pick, with the Cats -1 as of Saturday evening.

-- Road teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 11
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 ATS record in Week 11

Team Betting Notes

-- The 'over' finally dominated for the first time in four weeks. The 'under' was 10-3 in the past three weeks entering Week 11.

-- Ottawa (1-9) lost for the seventh consecutive game Friday against the BC Lions (6-4), but don't blame the RedBlacks' defense. They allowed just seven points, and have given up just 17.3 ppg over the past four losses, all 'unders'.

-- Montreal (3-7) pulled into a tie for first place in the disappointing East Division with idle Toronto (3-7). The Alouettes have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

-- The 'under' had cashed in five of the past six for Montreal, but the 'over' came through against Hamilton (2-7) Sunday.

-- Saskatchewan (8-2) has rattled off seven straight wins since starting the season 1-2 SU. The Roughriders swept the home-and-home with Winnipeg (6-5).

-- The Blue Bombers started the season 5-1, but they have dropped four of the past five to fall into last place out West.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 12

September 9, 2014

The cream of the crop in the CFL keeps rising to the top as the regular season rolls into Week 12.

Looking back at last weekend’s results, British Columbia got things started by grinding-out a 7-5 win over Ottawa on Friday night as an eight-point road favorite. The total obviously stayed UNDER the 47-point closing line. On Saturday, Calgary improved its position atop the West Division with a 41-34 victory against Edmonton as a three-point favorite on the road. The total in this contest easily went OVER a closing line of 48 ½ points.

Sunday’s double-header started with Montreal getting past Hamilton 38-31 as a slight 1 ½-point home underdog with the total going OVER the 46-point line. Saskatchewan held off Winnipeg on the road 30-24 as a 2 ½-point favorite in the second game. The total went OVER a closing line of 50 ½ points.

Friday, Sept. 12

Montreal (3-7 SU, 4-6 ATS) at Edmonton (7-3 SU, 5-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -9
Total: 48 ½

Game Overview

It has been a rough season for Montreal with injuries and turnover at the quarterback position and some pretty spotty play on defense at times, but in a very weak East Division title race, it is currently tied with Toronto for first place with two wins both straight-up and against the spread in its last two games.

The Eskimos have lost their last two games SU and ATS to fall two games off the pace in the West, but they remain one of the best balanced teams in the CFL with an offense that is averaging 26.1 points per game complementing a defense that is holding teams to 21.1 PPG. Edmonton slotback Adarius Bowman continues to lead the league in receiving yards with 866.

Betting Trends

Montreal has covered ATS in seven of the last nine meetings and the total has gone OVER in the last four meetings in Edmonton. The Eskimos won the first meeting this season 33-23 in early August as 5 ½-point road favorites and the total went OVER the closing 46 ½-point line.

Saturday, Sept. 13

Toronto (3-7 SU, 4-6 ATS) at Calgary (9-1 SU, 8-2 ATS)
Point-spread: OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

Toronto comes off its bye week looking to snap a three-game skid in which it went 1-2 ATS as an underdog. The one bright spot for the Argonauts has been the play of Ricky Ray at quarterback with 2,584 passing yards and a league-high 16 touchdown throws, be he has not been able to keep pace with a defense that is allowing 26.2 PPG.

The Stampeders are charging their way towards the Grey Cup Playoffs with the best record in the league and they come into this matchup riding a five-game winning streak both SU and ATS. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell has been one of the biggest surprises this season with the top passer rating in the league (100.5)

Betting Trends

Toronto holds a 7-2 edge ATS in the last nine meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in the last seven meetings in Calgary. The Stampeders rolled to a 34-15 victory early in the season as 2 ½-point favorites on the road. The total stayed UNDER the 55-point line.

Winnipeg (6-5 SU, 7-4 ATS) at British Columbia (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS)
Point-spread: BC - 7 ½
Total: 50 ½

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers had their chances in the back-end of Sunday’s home-and-home series against Saskatchewan with Drew Willy throwing for 360 yards and two touchdowns, but he was also picked-off twice. He currently leads the CFL in total passing yards (2,889), but he only has one more touchdown throw (12) than interceptions (11).

BC got Travis Lulay back in the lineup as its starting quarterback against the RedBlacks, but his return looks to be short-lived after leaving the game with another shoulder injury. Kevin Glenn did an admirable job at times in his absence, but this could be a big setback for the Lions in their stretch run to the playoffs.

Betting Trends

The Blue Bombers come into this West Division showdown with a 6-2-1 ATS record in the last nine meetings at BC Place and they have a profitable 7-3 mark ATS in the last 10 meetings overall. The total has stayed UNDER in 10 of the last 11 matchups played in BC.

Sunday, Sept. 14

Saskatchewan (8-2 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Hamilton (2-7 SU, 3-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Pick 'em
Total: Off

Game Overview

The defending 2013 Grey Cup Champs have built up a head of steam as the regular season wears on with a seven-straight wins (5-2 ATS). The bad news for this contest could be the availability of quarterback Darian Durant, who left Sunday’s game against Winnipeg with elbow injury. He has been ruled out for Sunday’s game and his status for the remainder of the year does not look good.

Hamilton is in desperate need of a win after posting just one SU victory in its last five games. The Tiger-Cats have failed to cover in all five contests. The 31 points that they did put up in last week’s loss was the most this team scored since a late July win over Ottawa. Zach Collaros threw for 338 yards and two touchdowns while completing 30-of 43 attempts against the Alouettes.

Betting Trends

These two team met on opening day with Saskatchewan cruising to a 31-10 victory as a 3 ½-point home favorite. It is now 6-1 both SU and ATS in the last seven meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in three of the last four games.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 12

September 15, 2014

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites went 4-0 straight up in Week 12

-- Favorites went 3-1 ATS in Week 12

-- Home teams posted a 4-0 SU record in Week 12

-- Home teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 12

-- The 'over/under' went 2-2 in Week 12

Team Betting Notes

-- Calgary (10-1) won its sixth straight contest in a 40-33 win over Toronto (3-8), but for the first time during the win streak they failed to cover.

-- Winnipeg (6-6) has flip-flopped its season. They started 5-1 SU, but slipped to 1-5 SU over its past six games, going 2-4 ATS during the span.

-- Edmonton (8-3) took out their frustrations on Montreal (3-8), covering a double-digit spread. The Esks are 8-0 SU and 6-2 ATS against everyone not named Calgary, and 0-3 SU/ATS against the Stamps.

-- The modest two-game win streak is over for the Alouettes. They're still just 2-7 SU and 3-6 ATS over the past nine games, and winless in five straight against the West Division.

-- In one of the more surprising results of the weekend, Hamilton (3-7) squashed Saskatchewan (8-3) by a 28-3 score. The TiCats were actually favored by 1 1/2 points, but no one expected a 25-point victory. Hamilton has won back-to-back home games, and they're 3-2 SU/2-3 ATS in five outings at Tim Hortons Field.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 13

September 16, 2014

It was a good time to be a favorite in the CFL in Week 12 with a 4-0 straight-up run and a 3-1 mark against the spread. Edmonton got the ball rolling last Friday with a 33-16 romp over Montreal as a nine-point home favorite. The total went OVER the 49-point closing line.

Saturday’s double-header started with Calgary coming out on top of Toronto 40-33, but it could not cover the hefty 11 ½-point spread at home. The total in this game went OVER the 49 ½-point closing line. Later that day, British Columbia hammered Winnipeg 26-9 as a 7 ½-point home favorite with the total staying UNDER 48 points.

Hamilton won for only the third time this season with a 28-3 victory against Saskatchewan as a 2 ½-point favorite at home. The total stayed UNDER the 47-point closing line in this inter-division clash.

Friday, Sept. 19

Toronto (3-8 SU, 5-6 ATS) at British Columbia (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS)
Point-spread: BC -7
Total: 50

Game Overview

The Argonauts opened-up a 29-10 lead on Calgary after two quarters behind another solid performance from quarterback Ricky Ray, but once again the defense broke down in the second half. Toronto is averaging 24.4 points a game but its current losing streak reach four games SU behind a defense that is allowing a league-high 27.5 points a game.

BC’s Week 12 win improved its record to 5-1 SU in the last six games and it is 4-2 ATS. Kevin Glenn was back at the helm as quarterback for the Lions with Travis Lulay back on the injured list and he completed 20-of-27 attempts for 261 yards and two scores against the Blue Bombers.

Betting Trends

The Lions are 17-2 SU in the last 19 meetings and they are 6-2 ATS in the last eight games between the two including a 33-17 road win over Toronto in mid-August as three-point favorites. The total stayed UNDER the 53-point line in that game and it has now stayed UNDER in 17 of the last 23 meetings.

Saturday, Sept. 20

Edmonton (8-3 SU, 6-5 ATS) at Hamilton (3-7 SU, 4-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Hamilton -2
Total: 53

Game Overview

The Eskimos snapped a quick two-game skid both SU and ATS with last week’s win and they remain tied with Saskatchewan for second-place in the West Division title race. Slotback Adarius Bowman added 131 yards receiving on 10 catches to his league-high 997 receiving yards on the year.

Hamilton may only have three SU wins on the year, but right now that is good enough for sole possession of first place in the East by a half-game over Montreal and Toronto. Zach Collaros continues to light it up at quarterback since missing a significant amount of time with a head injury. He had 287 yards passing and two scores in Sunday’s win.

Betting Trends

Edmonton is just 6-14 ATS in its last 20 games against the Tiger-Cats and the total has gone OVER in four of its last six road games against Hamilton. The Eskimos won the first meeting this season 28-24 but they could not cover as 4 ½-point home favorites. The total stayed UNDER the closing 54-point line.

Sunday, Sept. 21

Calgary (10-1 SU, 8-3 ATS) at Montreal (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -7
Total: 48 ½

Game Overview

Calgary continues to roll towards the Grey Cup Playoffs with a SU six-game winning streak and last Saturday was the first time it failed to cover during this impressive run. This is easily the most complete team in the CFL with 30.2 points per game on offense and a points-allowed average of 18.3 on defense.

Montreal’s offense has shown some signs of life with quarterback Jonathan Crompton at the helm, although he took a step backwards against Edmonton last Friday with 169 yards passing and a completion rate of just 55.5 percent on 27 attempts.

Betting Trends

The Stampeders have won six of the last seven meetings SU and they have covered in their last five games against Montreal including a 29-8 victory on opening day as 7 ½-point home favorites. The total has gone OVER in 12 of Calgary’s last 18 road games against the Alouettes.

Ottawa (1-9 SU, 3-7 ATS) at Saskatchewan (8-3 SU, 6-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -11
Total: 44 ½

Game Overview

Bruised and battered in their first 10 games in the CFL, the RedBlacks are coming off a much needed bye week. As expected, the expansion team is ranked last in the league in scoring with just 14.1 PPG and its beleaguered defense has been giving-up an average of 25.8 PPG.

Saskatchewan should be able to get back to its winning ways after last week’s loss snapped a seven-game SU winning streak. The bad news is that it will have to press on towards the playoffs without quarterback Darian Durant. He was replaced by an ineffective Tino Sunseri in the loss to the Tiger-Cats.

Betting Trends

These two inter-division foes first met in early August with the Roughriders cruising to a 38-14 victory as six-point road favorites. The total in that contest went OVER the 50 ½-point closing line.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 13

September 22, 2014

League Betting Notes

-- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 straight up in Week 13

-- Underdogs went 4-0 ATS in Week 13

-- Home teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 13

-- Road teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 13

-- The 'over/under' went 2-2 in Week 13

Team Betting Notes

-- The East Division has been much maligned this season, and rightly so if you review the standings. However, Week 13 saw the East go 3-1 SU and 4-0 ATS against the West.

-- In perhaps the biggest stunner of the season thus far, Calgary (10-2) lost for just the second time in 12 games, snapping a six-game win streak in Montreal (4-8). It wasn't a fluke, either, as the Alouettes licked the Stamps 31-15.

-- Montreal's win against Calgary snapped a five-game losing streak against the West Division.

-- Ottawa (1-10) nearly joined Montreal in the upset club, taking Saskatchewan (9-3) to overtime before falling 35-32 to the Roughriders.

-- Hamilton (4-7) has off three consecutive home wins at Tim Hortons Field, and they are 4-2 SU/3-3 ATS in six home games this season.

-- Edmonton (8-4) has dropped three of their past four games after starting the season 7-1.

-- Toronto (4-8) snapped a four-game losing streak, avenging a loss to the BC Lions (7-5). The Argos have now covered three in a row.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 14

September 23, 2014

Week 13 was the perfect time to go against the favorites with a 4-0 record against the spread that also included some shocking straight-up upsets.

Toronto started the run of upsets on Friday with a stunning 40-23 victory over British Columbia as a six-point road underdog. The total went well OVER the 49-point closing line. Saturday’s shocker was Edmonton covering by the slightest of margins as a 2.5-point road underdog in a tight 25-23 loss to Hamilton. The total in that contest stayed UNDER the 51-point closing line.

The biggest upset of the season took place on Sunday with Montreal upending Calgary 31-15 as a seven-point home underdog. The total stayed just UNDER the 47-point line. Week 13 wrapped things up with Ottawa completing the ATS sweep with a 35-32 loss to Saskatchewan as an 11-point road underdog. The total easily went OVER the 44-point line in that one

Friday, Sept. 26

Montreal (4-8 SU, 5-7 ATS) at Ottawa (1-10 SU, 4-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Montreal -4
Total: 48 ½

Game Overview

It is hard to know what to think about Montreal after last week’s win other than the fact that the Alouettes may have finally found their permanent starter at quarterback after Jonathan Crompton completed 20-of-28 passes for 220 yards and two scores in the win over the Stampeders.

Ottawa has looked like an expansion team all season long, but there has to be few positive takeaways from the 32 points it scored on the road in last week’s loss. That was the most points the RedBlacks scored this year. Henry Burris completed passes to seven different players led by Marcus Henry’s eight receptions for 87 yards.

Betting Trends

Montreal beat the RedBlacks 20-10 as a five-point home favorite at the end of August with the total staying UNDER the 45 ½-point line. The Alouettes come into this game with a 4-2 record ATS in their last six games while Ottawa has now covered in their last two outings.

Saskatchewan (9-3 SU, 6-6 ATS) at Edmonton (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -6
Total: 49 ½

Game Overview

The Roughriders have to hope that back-up quarterback Tino Sunseri continues to acclimate himself into the offensive scheme after throwing for 260 yards and two scores in last week’s much needed win. He completed 62.5 percent of his 32 attempts after posting a completion percentage of just 53.8 on the year.

Edmonton started the season with seven SU wins in its first eight games, but last week’s loss to Hamilton dropped the Eskimos to just 1-3 SU in its last four games. Over this stretch, the defense has allowed an average of 27.5 points per game as opposed to a season average of just 21 PPG.

Betting Trends

This will be the first meeting this season, but Saskatchewan has failed to cover in five of the last six meetings and it is 2-6 ATS in its last eight trips to Edmonton. The total has gone OVER in the last four games played at Commonwealth Stadium.

Saturday, Sept. 27

Hamilton (4-7 SU, 4-7 ATS) at Winnipeg (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS)
Point-spread: OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats remain in first place in the East Division race with a half-game lead over both Montreal and Toronto and they have been slowly building some momentum with a 3-1 SU record in their last four games. Zach Collaros continued to light things up last week against Edmonton with 318 yards passing and one score while completing 25-of-35 attempts.

Winnipeg is coming off a much needed bye week after dropping five of its last six games SU. It was blown-out in two of those losses, but the average margin of defeat in the other three games was just 5.6 points. The Blue Bombers success this season has come against their old division with a 5-1 SU record in six previous games against the East. One injury note; quarterback Drew Willy remains questionable with a shoulder injury.

Betting Trends

Winnipeg won the first matchup this season 27-26 as a four-point road underdog, but the Tiger-Cats still have a 5-1 SU edge in the last six games and a 4-2 edge ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last 10 meetings.

British Columbia (7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS) at Calgary (10-2 SU, 8-4 ATS)
Point-spread: OFF
Total: OFF

Game Overview

The Lions have gone most of the season with Kevin Glenn under center due to various injuries to Travis Lulay. His overall numbers have been decent with the third-most passing yards in the league (2,703) and a respectable 63.5 completion percentage, but he has just one more touchdown throw (13) than interceptions (12).

Calgary sorely missed Bo Levi Mitchell at the helm as quarterback last week and he remains questionable for Saturday’s game with a knee injury. He is right behind Glenn in passing yards on the year with 2,554 and his completion percentage is 62.6, but the biggest difference is his 17 touchdown passes verse just five interceptions.

Betting Trends

BC squeezed by Calgary 25-24 in early August as a four-point road underdog to hand the Stampeders their only other SU loss this season. The home team in this series won the previous four games SU and ATS. The total has gone OVER in five of the last seven games between these two division rivals.

CFL

Week 14

Alouettes leaving offense in Montreal

The Montreal Alouettes has been nothing short of a disaster this season, but bettors have been able to find a positive in the teams mediocrity. The Als have had six road games so far this season and they have gone under the total in five of them.

The under trend is thanks to the Als lack of offense as the team has averaged 13 points per game on the road this season.

Montreal travels to Ottawa with the total currently set at 47.

Roughriders bring their top game against top teams

With the West being such a powerhouse in the CFL, bettors have found some solace in the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The 'Riders have a stellar 7-1-2 against the spread record teams with winning records.

Saskatchewan will travel to Edmonton as 6-point dogs Friday.
