Paging Mr. Smith, paging Mr. Smith.

Wakefield is a good person off the field. That is a lot more important than anything else, so many of these people we talk about seem like or clearly are cockheads.

Wakefield has done a great job in Boston. And the price they paid to get him in 1995, nothing, cant be beat. He had struggled in his last major league assignment and struggled in AAA, for the Pirates I think, for a whole year before the red sox took a flier on him. 12 years later, he's still in the rotation. you cant beat that

There isn't a rotation in baseball he coudn't crack right now if he was moved by the Red Sox for some bizarre reason.

I found the fact that ONLY Cy Young (the guy they named the award after) and The Rocket Roger Clemens have more wins as a Red Sox than Wake in their over 100 year old history truly incredible.

That stat just amazed me.

I'm a huge Red Sox fan (No way Rob, for real?!)

But the one player I havent liked for the last 4-5 years is Tim Wakefield. I cant stand watching the guy pitch, anytime we face a good line up like the Yanks its an automatic loss.

I know Timmy is a great guy, he's managed some good numbers etc. If it were up to me, he would NEVER see a start in the playoffs.

Wakefield was LIGHTS OUT for his career a few years ago vs Yankees, but they have done a good job of hitting him the last 2 years and that has evened out a bit. I love seeing the lines with Wakefield vs the skanks. Always a good value. And that playoff series where he gave up the homer to Aaron Boone, he crushed the Yankes.

I am going to google to prove that. he gave up a homer, knuckleballers are prone to that, but he got them into position to win that series and considering he has never been a "star" on the team a lot is expected of, he exceeded any expectations by a lot.

2003 ALCS Wakefield vs Skanks

for the series he was 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA. He killed them in his 2 starts and beat Mussina in both....without that, Boston would never have made it to game 7

Without Wakefield, the Red Sox do not win the 2004 World Championship, as he saved the bullpen.

By the way, Tim is making a whopping 4 million this year...........compare this figure to about 50+ other pitchers making more money and not providing what Wakefield does.

Matt Clement is currently pulling down 9,000,000 from the Red Sox and he hasn't thrown one pitch this year.

Another huge attribute the Wakefield brings to the club that goes unnoticed is what he provides the Bosox starter that follows him in the rotation, almost no matter who it is. Facing any pitcher that throws 90 mph+ after facing Wakefield and it appears they are throwing 103 mph..................and think about how Papellbon looks after one faces Wakefield for 3 at-bats!!

Quite honestly with everything considered, Wakefield is not only a great pitcher, but one of the most valuable players in baseball to have on a team....................lots of innings, versatile(can pitch everyday), great in clubhouse, and works cheap.

Not likely, but he could be a twenty game winner this season........at age 41 making 4,000,000.

What else can you say, this sums it up ....innings eater , every team neeeds one and he's making a modest salary compared to the kind of season he's having.

Don't understand the ripping of Wakefield... his career ERA is very good... He is above 500 life time as a pitcher... He goes out every fifth day and can even pitch between then....

And I fucking hate the Red Sox

Ok, I wont say another bad thing about Tim Wakefield. :) (This is like the Santana thing all over again)

He isnt an overpaid cry baby and he eats up innings. Those are the best points made in the thread I think.

Haha, oh god that was funny.

Let him get to at least 15 first, something he has rarely done in his career, before we shoot for 20, ok?

Is this thread a joke. Innings eater, 2 seasons in past over 200 innings.

Past 12 starts 8-4 era of 5.59

Redsox are getting robbed paying this guy 4 million a year.

Show me a better #4 starter than Wakefield anywhere in baseball.

BTW Wakefield pitched 62 innings on the road this year with an era of 3.61 doing it. The inflated ERAs are natrual at Fenway. The Red Sox staff as a team at Fenway is over 4.50 led by Shilling at 4.11, Dice-K at 4.39 and Josh Beckett at 4.50, Wakefield at 5.33 and 5th starter Julian Taverez is at 5.23 however the team itself is 36 and 20 at home.

Regarding salaries here are a couple of similar veterans - plus their record this year and salary this year - I could go on with a lot more but the point is these days $4M for a 15 year reliable veteran starter is actully small money.

Bartolo Colon 6-6 $16M
Jon Garland 8-7 $10M
Mike Mussina 6-7 $11M
Jarod Washburn 8-7 $10M
Jose Contreras 5-14 $9M
Andy Pettitte 7-7 $16M
Tim Wakefield 13-9 $4M

If you don't like or hate The Red Sox thats fine and certainly your perrogative but personally I think you really don't know much about baseball or are letting your dislike for a team or player cloud your reasoning.

If Wakefield played for the Royals, nobody would even know who he is..

Good 5th pitcher to have in the rotation..

How about Jeff Suppan, the Brewers are paying him $6.25M to go 8-9 with an ERA of 4.97 in the NL. To finally take the cake the Giants are paying Matt Morris $10M to go 7-7 with a 4.35 ERA in the NL. Even Greg Maddux is making $10m to go 7-8 with a 4.20 ERA for the Padres. To finally rest my case the Marlins are paying Dontrelle Willis $6.45M to go 7 -10 with a 4.95 ERA.

Compared to these guys Wakefield is a bargain twice over.

again you don't win 164 games and be a nobody.
