ha ha. nice thread when I was a taxi driver I just catered to my audience. this will up your tips
for example:
white couple with some snobby lady leading the couple: "Miss, I've got some Michael Bolton and Josh Tesh CD's to play for you
two tonight." Insert CD. Tip = double
black couple in the car: "Hey folks, I just want to let you know I mean business. We aint stopping for no cops. Fuck them. I will riot on their ass
and tear shit up." Insert a self-made mesh tape of the best of Soul Train. Tip = double (mind you, I was a former cop. but again, I was playing to my audience)
gay couple in the car: just sing Elton John songs at the top of your lungs. They always chime in and it's like you're Christmas carolling.

Doesn't work that way in Vegas... All the casinos on the strip have doormen. If you refuse the ride, they trespass you and your cab # from there for as long as they can remember you.
You can refuse a ride if the passenger is visibly to intoxicated to stand on their own, or they are being violent towards those people around him, or being escorted by security.
The moral of the story is get a job that pays you a salary OR get a job where your compensation is directly related to your effort and accomplishment (for example a sales commission). If you are relying on the public to pay your wages from gratuities you will fall into the trap of being paid by naive, cheap, clueless or generally terrible people. And you will complain about it.
Yeah....well those jobs do not pan out with the stress, politics, ass kissing and bull shit that come with the salary. I had that for years and was let go about a year + ago. I must say that the grass is most definitely greener on this side that I am on without the above stress, politics, ass kissing and bull shit!
Hopefully this won't sound really prejudice but it is what it is. My oldest son had a baseball tournament in Council Bluffs so one night I got to roll some dice. Next to me is a brother wearing sunglasses at a craps table with his lady with a huge ass. Anyway he's acting like a high roller but not betting like it. Orders a patron on the rocks and makes sure everyone at the table knows that is what he is ordering (big time I'm telling you). Drink about 80% of the drink, then calls the pit boss over and says "this ain't patron" again after he drank it and said he shouldn't have to pay for it or should get another that is "really patron."
The pit poss actually went to the bar, made sure it was patron, smelled it and basically told the guy he isn't getting another.
Oh and I cashed out winning about $900 due to 2 hot rollers and the brother kept saying can't believe another 6 came when he was betting some weird longshot bets. Also told me I was too patient and not pressing enough yet I was betting 10X his wager size.
Oh and when he got free drinks he didn't tip, at all. Not even a white chip...

Tip your waiter 20% unless they are downright terrible, then you tip them 10%-15%. That is the only money they are taking home that night. And they are controlling your food from the back near the kitchen to the table. Do you want them to be poor and pissed off? You tipping them less isn't the way to handle bad service either. Ask to talk to a manager. Give your Barista a dollar if you get a special espresso drink. It takes 5 or more minutes to whip up your Venti Caramel triple shot latte. Give the guy a dollar for his efforts. Nothing needed if she just pours you a coffee unless she is cute and you wanna ask her out next week. If you order takeout Chinese or a pizza in bad or even hot weather give that delivery guy $3, it is a big part of his pay too. Give a bartender a dollar on each beer you order unless they are just cracking lids off Bud Lights then you give them less. And give more if you make them mix 5 fruity umbrella cocktails for your whole table. Tip your cab driver 10-15%, more if he plays good music or makes you laugh in conversation. Minimum give a valet a folded up dollar bill, at least a $5 spot if you are at a fancy restaurant and on a date. Anything less and you look like a cheap bastard. Checking into a hotel and a bellman carries your 4 suitcases to your room? If you aren't handing that guy 3-5 bucks eff you. Your bags are heavy as shit. If you are wealthy enough to live in a building with a doorman or night security? $50-$150 cash gift in a card around Christmas covers you for the whole year. Tip your barber a few dollars. You are gonna see this guy every few weeks or months for years. Don't you want him to give you a good haircut and be likeable? Finally give your caddie five dollars or more depending on how good of a round you played.

Talking to restaurant servers over many years. i ask what is the table you don't want to see in your section. First is almost always blacks. Second is almost always a group of women of any race. Women together always are asking for separate checks and are stingy tippers. A real pain in the ass keeping and ringing up six separate checks for one table.
