surfboard modem is a very good modem/router. I can tell you I have 5 customers on the 25MB plan and they haven't complained except when kids are on the wifi at same time. It will buffer when it happens for a few seconds. One customer has Savage in Living room Ethernet and Beast box in bedroom wifi. His Beast box was only getting 16MB and buffered. He bumped his service to the 60MB plan and it fixed his buffering issues on Beast box. I try telling customers the box is only as good as your internet. As far as getting two ISP... I wouldn't do it and AT&T sucks with contract and they make you use their modem as a gateway.FTR, it's a Motorola surfboard that Northland installed. I assume it's a modem/router combo. I pay for 24MB and whenever I speedtest it, I get right around that so I assume it's not a problem.
AT&T sucks with contract and they make you use their modem as a gateway.
Pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by gateway? I thought the ATT uverse would be connected to the phone port in the wall, meanwhile the cable internet would remain in the cable port resulting in no conflict between the two. Am I incorrect?
I've read complaints about ATT in general, but around here the people I know who have it seem to be pretty pleased with it. I suppose it can vary by area.
What you said about no problems "except when using wifi at the same time". That's my problem, I have to have both at the same time. If I go the Savage route, I don't see any way around getting two ISP's. It's definitely not something I want to do.
Here's the deal with AT&T... they are DSL and Fiber internet company. Fiber is not out yet in most places but have heard great things about it. The DSL (phone line) with AT&T you have to use their modem( gateway) and can't use your own modem. Their modem/router combo is not great for wifi if you want to stream. I don't know what devices you want to hook up for wifi but if you want to run a gaming console or stream on computer, you will most likely have to upgrade to a better router and bridge it with their modem/router. It's very easy to do. I see what you are saying about needing two ISP providers but keep in mind AT&T makes you sign a contract and you are stuck with it.
The fiber is great. That's what I have. If it's available, get it.
If not, stay away from AT&T DSL at all costs. They will promise you one speed and deliver you another. And their equipment sucks ass. The modem/router combo with DSL drops out frequently.
Does it plug into the TV or the AVR (receiver)?
Plugs in the TV. I assume your TV then is plugged in the AV receiver for sound.
Hey Harry how long have you had the fiber? Are you using their modem/router combo with it? Need more info about Fiber so I can recommend it if they offer it for customers.
