The Benefits--And Perils--Of Multiculturalism
A couple days ago, I sent the link to “The Perils of Multiculturalism” to a friend of mine, and she passed it on to someone else. The following is part of what she received in response:
“Multiculturism is one of the things that makes America the great country it is. My own ancestry includes Native Americans along with English, Scottish, Irish, German, and Spanish/French individuals. Each person that comes to these shores does so with hope in his/her heart for a better future.”
In some ways, he is entirely correct; in other ways he is utterly, completely, absolutely wrong.
Every time a legal immigrant arrives, he (or she) brings his own culture with him. It is that constellation of cultures that has created the warp and weft of this great country. It’s a fabric that is continuous embroidered with the richness of many different heritages, and that changes and evolves over time. Each new citizen enriches and changes our culture, which was the intent of our founding fathers when they wrote the Constitution as a living document.
However, this argument has at its heart one basic flaw, and that is the belief that everyone who comes here comes with hope for a better future. Historically, that has for the most part been the case, and there are still many immigrants who come here legally, through the appropriate channels, and add their threads to the material of this nation.
The difference between them and the illegal aliens washing up on our shores today is one of attitude. The immigrants who have come here legally have wanted to become Americans, and have left behind their homes and families to do so. They love America and what it stands for, and they have gone to great length to become American citizens and make better lives for themselves.
That’s not the case with many of the illegals here today. While it’s true that some of them do come here to work and improve their lives, far too many care nothing for America or the American people. They have no wish to leave behind their homelands, learn English, or become a part of American life. Rather, their stated goal is to take whatever they can, and shred the very foundation of who and what we are. They have no wish to become Americans or to share in the American experience.
This, then, is the problem with the illegal aliens who are crossing our border daily. If they were fleeing a tyrannical government and coming here with a genuine desire to become Americans and take part in our national dialogue, I would have no problem with granting them amnesty.
However, they are here not to join us as citizens, but to tear down everything we have built over the past 250 years. For this we must have no tolerance, no compromise, and no reprieve.

We must demand the rule of law be restored.
In the media we hear that our Country has been divided along racial lines due to the passage of SB 1070 in Arizona. I submit to you that we are being divided by design. One of the most tried and true principles of war is "divide and conquer" and it holds true with this issue, as it has so many before it. Arizona did not discover fire with this legislation, they just made the decision to enforce the already existing Federal laws because our government has made a calculated decision to ignore its statutory and constitutional responsibilities to do so. It is a felony under Federal law to be in this country illegally and 8 USC 1324(a) imposes criminal and civil penalties on businesses who employ illegal immigrants.
It is the ultimate hypocrisy that California has placed itself at the forefront of the opposition to Arizona's SB 1070. Cities are calling for the boycott of the Arizona's economy and to sever its existing contracts with the State. Meg Whitman, the Republican candidate for governor of that State has recently endorsed immigration amnesty, in an effort to pander to the Hispanic caucus for their votes. What boggles the mind is that California's statute section 834b (a) provides:
834b. (a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully
cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization
Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is
suspected of being present in the United States in violation of
federal immigration laws.
(b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected
of being present in the United States in violation of federal
immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the
following:
(1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen
of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent
resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time
or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of
immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not
be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and
place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding
documentation to indicate his or her legal status.
At some point the idea of a representative government has gotten watered down and lost. Politicians avoid and ignore those who put them in office and advance their own agendas, as well as the agendas of lobbyists and Political Action Committees. We, as American citizens can no longer allow those in office, or employed by the goverment to pick and choose which laws are to be followed based on their personal principles or beliefs. We must demand that the rule of law be restored to our country.
In 1907, Theodore Roosevelt addressed the issue of immigration when he said:
'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.
But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but must be something else also, isn't an American at all.
We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'
-Theodore Roosevelt 1907
Our society has not progressed beyond the words of President Roosevelt, we have simply been led astray by the rants and screams of those who refuse to assimilate themselves to our Country and shamelessly fly their flags over ours.

Are We Shooting Ourselves in the Foot?
I attended my first Tea Party event last weekend—a rally in support of AZ SB 1070—and found it inspiring, to say the least. Some days I feel like I’m a lone voice crying in the wilderness, but more and more I’m finding that many others are joining in that cry, and that gives me hope.
That said, however, I think we’re shooting ourselves in the foot on something.
I want to preface this with two disclaimers: First, I am absolutely, 100% in favor of LEGAL immigration. Let there be no doubt about that. We all came here from somewhere, even the “Native” Americans whose ancestors migrated across the land bridge from Asia.
And second, I detest “Press 1 for English” as much as anyone else in the country.
Nonetheless, I think the Tea Party movement is making a mistake when members carry signs that say things like, “This finger wasn’t made to Press 1 for English.”
Let’s face it. Conservative white Americans aren’t going to win this fight by ourselves, no matter how many times we carry flags and rally. We need Black Americans, Hispanics, and others who are here legally with us if we’re going to succeed.
We need to distinguish between cultural change—the assimilation of other languages and cultures into the American experience—and invasion—the flood of illegal and often dangerous aliens crossing our southern border.
When we carry signs that denigrate Hispanics as a group, we insult and marginalize every one of them, and this is a serious mistake. After all, it isn’t the Hispanics that are calling the IRS, the telephone company, the bank and the electric company that are the problem. All—or at least most—of those Hispanics are here legally, are trying to learn the language, and are our potential allies. How many illegal aliens do you really think are going to call any of those phone numbers?
The Tea Party movement needs to be courting legal Hispanic immigrants, not chasing them away. They’re potentially a huge asset, and we need to include them at every possible opportunity.
