Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Inc.
James J. Johnston
President
</TD></TR><TR><TD><!-- #BeginEditable "Insert Here" -->OOIDA National Call to Action
October 30 , 2007
Dear Association Member:
As you well know, for more than a year OOIDA has been actively fighting to stop the U.S. Department of Transportation's efforts to implement a Mexican trucking pilot program and open our highways to Mexico-domiciled trucks and drivers. You may recall that earlier this year amendments to cut off funding for the DOT's Mexican trucking pilot program were included in both the U.S. House of Representatives' and Senate's respective versions of the fiscal year 2008 transportation appropriations bills. In July, the House unanimously passed an additional amendment, sponsored by Representatives DeFazio, Hunter, Boyda and Gary Miller, that would also seek to halt the program. Then in September, the Senate passed its version of a similar amendment sponsored by Senators Dorgan and Specter by a vote of 75-23.
Since then, Congress has been in a standoff with the White House on the transportation appropriations bill and all 11 other annual spending bills. This stalemate has kept the House and Senate from moving forward with a conference committee to work out the differences in their versions of the transportation bill and from sending a final version to the President. After much anticipation, we are hearing that there may finally be a breakthrough this week. No one is sure yet how the situation will play out, but in some form or fashion the FY2008 transportation appropriations should be sent to the President by the end of this week.
Congress is trying to reach a deal with the President so that he will not veto the unfinished appropriations bills. The DOT is working hard to make the Mexican trucking pilot program a bargaining chip in Congress's negotiations with the White House. Even if they cannot get them removed from the final version of the transportation appropriations bill, the DOT is hoping to get the Dorgan and DeFazio amendments watered down enough to allow the pilot program to continue to operate.
As I have said before, we are truly fighting a unique and historic battle. One in which the DOT continues to roll forward in defiance of Congress, the American people, and the laws of our land. Instead of implementing and abiding by the laws that have been written by Congress, the executive branch of our government is clearly ignoring their Constitutional responsibilities and limitations.
Rest assured that your Association is doing everything that we possibly can to reign in the DOT. As a member of OOIDA and as a citizen of the United States, please do all that you can to help put a stop to this program.
Please call and fax all of your elected representatives in Washington D.C., both of your U.S. Senators and your Congressman. They need to hear from you as soon as possible and continue to hear from you until all funding is stripped from the Mexican trucking pilot program. Also, please ask your family, friends and acquaintances to contact their lawmakers.
Operators at the U.S. Capitol Switchboard (202- 224-3121) can connect you to the offices of your elected officials. If you are not sure who your Representative or Senators are, the operators will ask for your zip code and put you through to their offices. You are also welcome to call the Association at 800-444-5791, we will be happy to look up telephone and fax numbers for you.
Please know that your Association is working hard on your behalf and please do whatever you can to help. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, but we are going to have to keep fighting to get to it.
With sincere appreciation,
Jim Johnston http://ooida.com Write to Congress http://congress.org

GET THIS:

THERE WERE 36,000 "FIRE EVACUEES" AT THE QUALCOMM CENTER IN SAN DIEGO. . . .

AFTER ILLEGAL ALIENS WERE ARRESTED FOR STEALING RELIEF SUPPLIES AT THE CENTER

AUTHORITIES ANNOUNCED THEY WERE IMPLEMENTING A "VERIFICATION SYSTEM" BEFORE GIVING AID TO ANYONE . . . . .

AFTER ANNOUNCING A VERIFICATION SYSTEM . . . .

THERE ARE ONLY TWO HUNDRED (200) "EVACUEES" AT THE QUALCOMM CENTER TODAY!!!!!

For some reason the rest left.

Gee, I wonder why?

No, I don't actually wonder why, I know:

THEY WERE ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS !

This ought to give every American pause. 36,000 before a verification system;

200 after the verification system. THAT gives you an idea of how many illegal aliens are really in your country!

Interesting info.

Rather than shedding light on their numbers, it gives more info. about how they are likely to behave relative to the rest of us. Either way it's not good.

Here in FL I've noticed most people SAY they are against illegals yet they're happy to have a house built by a contractor who uses illegals, happy to have their lawn and garden maintained by illegals, play on a golf course maintained by illegals, make small talk with obvious illegals and treat them as a friendly neighbors, etc.

Didn't we learn our lesson from slavery? It's the same thing all over again, except that now we're not using the ball and chain anymore yet we're still letting them reproduce like rabbits. I mean if you're gonna do the slavery bit, ya might as well do it right!

SOURCES & EXPLANATIONS
• Capitalized green positions (i.e. SUPPORTS - OPPOSES) indicate a stance that would encourage lower immigration and more U.S. stability.
• Lower-case red positions
(i.e. supports - opposes) indicate stances that would lead to higher U.S. immigration, sprawl and congestion.
• Squares that are blank indicate that no position is yet known for that issue.
• "SUPPORT/OPPOSE" indicates a mixed stance that is more supportive than oppositional.
• "OPPOSE/SUPPORT" is similar but indicates more opposition than support.

• Most positions on the grid for people who have been Members of Congress are based on their record there. Click on the "Grade" link to view in detail. For other background on the rationale for the grid, click on the person's name at the top of the column.
• If candidates make convincing enough public arguments that they have changed their positions, the grid will reflect their new position over past actions. But both will appear on their individual background pages.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — The co-owners of a nationwide janitorial service that authorities say provided cleaning crews staffed with illegal immigrants to a northern Michigan resort have pleaded guilty to charges in the case.
The investigation into Rosenbaum-Cunningham International Inc., or RCI, a Florida-based cleaning contractor, led to the nationwide arrest in February of more than 200 illegal immigrants, mostly Mexican nationals.
Richard M. Rosenbaum, 61, and Edward S. Cunningham, 44, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to defraud the federal government and harboring illegal aliens in plea agreements with federal prosecutors.
Cunningham, of West Palm Beach, Fla., entered his plea Friday, and Rosenbaum, of Longwood, Fla., entered his plea Oct. 17.
Rosenbaum faces up to 10 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. Cunningham faces a five-year prison term and up to $250,000 in fines. Both face restitution amounts that the government says could exceed $16 million.
FIND MORE STORIES IN: Florida | Michigan | Longwood
Rosenbaum's sentencing was scheduled for Feb. 4. The electronic record for U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan didn't indicate a sentencing date for Cunningham.
RCI controller Christina A. Flocken, of Longwood, Fla., also was charged in the case. She has a plea hearing scheduled for Monday.
The investigation began at Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, in Michigan's northwestern Lower Peninsula.
The practice of paying cash wages to workers deprived the U.S. government of about $18.6 million in employment taxes, according to the indictment against the three. The government said RCI contracted with the resort between June 1997 and March 2006.

WASHINGTON - Some 21,000 people who should not have been allowed to enter the U.S. came through official border crossing points between Oct. 1, 2005 and Sept. 30, 2006, according to a government report released Monday. <!-- SpaceID=0 noconn 61 ads1 -->
The Government Accountability Office found that Customs and Border Protection officers turned away 200,000 people who tried to enter the country through the 326 legal air, sea and land entry points during the 2006 fiscal year. The numbers do not include people who unlawfully entered the country through other routes.

The GAO's findings are based on a statistical estimate of the number of people who could have passed through the entry points, Customs and Border Protection's deputy commissioner, Jayson P. Ahern, said Monday. In reality, the government does not know exactly how many people passed through checkpoints who should not have been allowed in the country.

I don't think we've ever seen an effort like this to stop illegal immigration -- 90 politicians putting Party politics aside to finally try to resolve a terrible problem.

The tough SAVE Act (H.R. 4088) that we've been preparing you for was finally made public this week. This email will show you a number of ways that this represents a special opportunity.

For starters, here's what the nation saw revealed at the press conference:
  • TRULY BI-PARTISAN
    [*]44 Democratic signers
    [*]46 Republican signers
    [*]Main author: A Democrat
[*]Standing with him at press conference & on TV shows:
Republican chairman of Immigration Reform Caucus
  • COMMITTEE LEADERS FROM BOTH PARTIES
  • (committees and subcommittees)

[*]17 Democrats who are House committee chairmen
[*]22 Republicans who are Ranking committee Members
  • FROM ALL REGIONS

    [*]12 from the East
    [*]17 from the Midwest
    [*]20 from the West
    [*]41 from the South
FRESHMEN DEMS AND GOP RUSH TO BE ORIGINALS ON THIS BILL

Most bills are introduced with only a handful of original co-sponsors. The splash of co-sponsors on H.R. 4088 is really quite extraordinary.

Of the 435 Members of the U.S. House, 20% were original signers.
  • NEWLY ELECTED FRESHMEN ESPECIALLY EAGER TO BE SEEN AS LEADERS AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
    [*]42.5% of freshman Democrats signed
    [*]41.6% of freshman Republicans signed
It is clear that doing something about illegal immigration was a promise made to voters by most candidates a year ago who defeated incumbents or who won seats vacated by retiring Congressmen.

This crop of freshmen from both Parties has a much greater sense of urgency about the immigration issue than do the top leaders of their Parties.

These freshman Representatives want to become SOPHOMORE Representatives after next fall's elections.

And they know that means they at least have to be seen as having done what it takes to get some immigration enforcement passed.
  • 52% of Democrats who defeated a Republican incumbent last year are original co-sponsors
And remember that this is just the beginning.

Now that the bill and its original signers have been made public, we can expect to see many more Members co-sponsoring -- especially if the users of NumbersUSA continue to fax and phone to pressure them.

Those of you responding to our Alerts the last two weeks have sent tens of thousands of faxes and made thousands of phone calls to Members informing them of the details of H.R. 4088. Please don't stop faxing/phoning if your Representative isn't on the list of original co-sponsors.

You can read a Capitol Hill insider assessment of the SAVE Act's great appeal to Democratic freshman at the bottom of this Alert.

FASCINATING CONTRASTS AMONG THE ORIGINAL CO-SPONSORS

If anybody thinks that Members of Congress who support our goals of Attrition Through Enforcement are of one kind, take a look at this:
  • THE ORIGINAL CO-SPONSORS OF THIS BILL INCLUDE:
[*]2 Members of the Congressional Black Caucus -- Rep. Davis (D-Ala.) and Rep. Bishop (D-Ga.).
[*]A Member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus -- Rep. Rodriguez (D-Texas).
[*]2 GOP Presidential Candidates -- Rep. Tancredo (R-Colo.) and Rep. Hunter (R-Calif.)
    [*]Environmentalist favorite, Rep. Udall (D-Colo.)
[*]Target of environmentalists, Rep. Doolittle (R-Calif.)
    [*]Anti-war champion, Rep. Murtha (D-Pa.)
[*]Bush anti-terrorism supporter, Rep. Rohrabacher (R-Calif.)
[*]Sponsor of bill to end chain migration, Rep. Gringrey (R-Ga.)
[*]Sponsor of bill to end anchor baby policies, Rep. Deal (R-Ga.)
[*]Rep. Kanjorski (D-Pa.) with an F in NumbersUSA's amnesty grading
[*]Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) with an A amnesty grade, and a 20-year leader against amnesties
[*]6 of 11 Democrats from Pennsylvania
[*]4 of 5 Democrats from Tennessee
[*]3 of 5 Democrats from Indiana, 3 of 6 from Georgia and 3 from New York
    [*]7 Republicans from California
[*]5 of 6 Republicans from North Carolina, 5 of 6 from Georgia and 5 of 19 from Texas
    [*]All 4 Republicans from Tennessee

FOR ENFORCEMENT-ONLY BILL
CREATES WIDE BUZZ

I was visiting with a Republican U.S. Senator and his staff in the Capitol this afternoon. They were in mild shock at what they were seeing over on the other side of Capitol Hill in the House of Representatives.

The first thing they said about the SAVE Act by Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) was that they couldn't remember a controversial bill being introduced in the House with a lot of co-sponsors that were divided nearly 50-50 between Parties. Generally, "bi-partisan" means a lot of co-sponsors from one party and a couple from the other. Or just a handful evenly divided. "What's going on over there."

Similar points were made on Lou Dobbs as he extolled the introduction of the SAVE Act to his prime time TV audience:

DOBBS: "A large group of Republicans and Democrats are now putting border security first. And they're doing it without amnesty. This is the truth. Honest. ..."

REP. CIRO RODRIGUEZ (D-TEXAS): "This team says it is now time to finally give the people what they've asked for in immigration and that is a bipartisan effort that addresses the issue and puts America's future first and puts partisan politics on the back row where it belongs. ... "

DOBBS: "I don't know about other folks, but when I hear 'bi-partisan' these days, I reach for my wallet and start looking for a fox hole. Is this the real deal?"

REP. HEATH SHULER (D-N.C.): "It really is, Lou. I mean, we've worked really hard together. It's been a six to seven-month bi-partisan relationship where we've been able to work with Members on both sides, ask law enforcement, ask the Border Patrol agents what is important for them. And most importantly is listen to the American people and ask them what they want. We've been able to put a very good bill together. 46 Republicans and 44 Democrats.

"In fact in this town, four of the opposite party or seven of the opposite party makes it bi-partisan. This is 40 and 40. This is a package you haven't seen."

DOBBS: "No. And I haven't seen much in the way of border security that's not attached to amnesty. ... "

Our Capitol Hill Team is finding that most of the Republicans who have not yet signed onto this bill have been slowed down by caution from House Republican leadership. The House GOP leaders feel that other enforcement bills introduced this year solely by Republicans are tougher, especially in terms of local arrests and detentions. But it is highly unlikely that any of the GOP bills can be pushed onto the House floor for a vote before the next elections.

GOP leaders also are questioning signing onto the Shuler bill alongside a lot of Democratic freshmen whom they have hoped to defeat next year, in part because they aren't tough enough against illegal immigration.

You will want to push your Republican non-signers into co-sponsoring the Shuler bill by putting the improvement of American communities ahead of partisan advantage.

As for Democrats, your Capitol Hill Team is hearing that talk about the Shuler bill is spreading through the Members like wildfire, causing a lot of fence-sitting Democrats to consider appeasing their louder and louder constituents by signing onto this bill.

After being crushed by hostile phone and fax from constituents for several years, many of these Democrats are being tempted to do something popular on immigration with this bill which they consider more moderate than previous enforcement bills that have come before them.

Your pressure on your Democratic Representatives may create just the right amount of extra rationale for Democratic leaders in the House to waive aside their preference for amnesties and allow this enforcement bill to get a vote.

Here is an interesting take on the political dynamics of the Shuler bill as reported in CongressDaily news service:

Freshman House Dems Seek Protection On Immigration Issue

By Kyle Trygstad

When a bipartisan group of House members unveiled a tough immigration initiative earlier this week, eight freshman Democrats stepped forward to speak.

The bill -- the "Secure America though Verification and Enforcement Act" -- would require all employers to verify citizenship for not only all new employees but existing ones.

That approach won the endorsement of Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Calif., chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, who credits anti-immigration sentiment with his 2006 special election victory, and NumbersUSA, a group seeking to reduce immigration by making it "extremely difficult for unauthorized persons to live and work in the United States."

But the eight freshman Democrats had more immediate and local political concerns. All of them and eight more who co-sponsored the bill defeated Republican incumbents last year.

Representing states stretching from California to New York, all but one of the 16 are running for re-election in districts that gave President Bush at least 51 percent of the vote in 2004 and in which immigration is a hot issue.

Being tough on illegal immigration is not what voters look for in the northern Manhattan district of House Ways and Means Chairman Rangel, but it is in western North Carolina, where Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., the lead sponsor on the SAVE Act, will have to defend his Asheville-based district next year against a more conservative challenger.

"Shuler's strength in his district is his ability to present himself as a socially conservative Democrat," said William Sabo, professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

"Immigration is an issue well suited to developing this image ... and it solidifies his appeal to the social conservative voters who dominate the district."

Rep. Jason Altmire, D-Pa., who will likely need to defeat former GOP Rep. Melissa Hart again to return to the 111th Congress, hears about illegal immigration from his constituents in suburban Pittsburgh and steel mill country.

"When I travel around western Pennsylvania, I hear as much about this issue as I do about any other, including the war in Iraq," Altmire said Wednesday in a conference call with reporters.

"And I worked on this bill simply because of its importance here."

In southeastern Indiana, where in 2004 Bush won the district with 59 percent of the vote, Democratic Rep. Baron Hill will face former GOP Rep. Mike Sodrel for a fourth straight time.
In a statement, Hill stated he is "constantly approached by constituents who have serious concerns about immigration."

To keep from losing the seat to Sodrel, Hill has focused much of his efforts on illegal immigration -- language from his immigration bill that passed the House in May was inserted into the SAVE Act.

In New York, Democratic Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand's district has areas that have voted Republican almost exclusively since the birth of the GOP, and she has been raising money for her 2008 campaign since her first day in office.

With New York Democratic Gov. Eliot Spitzer announcing in September his plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, the issue has been one of the hot topics of discussion in her district, according to her spokesman.

And Democratic Rep. Nancy Boyda's unlikely victory last year in traditionally Republican eastern Kansas' 2nd District led to her instant placement atop the National Republican Congressional Committee's 2008 target list.

The district had sent conservative candidates to Congress since 1994, and Boyda will likely face former Republican Rep. Jim Ryun in a rematch next year.

In an interview, Boyda said it is "infuriating to many of the people of Kansas's 2nd District that there are <IMMIGRATION>laws on the books that we are not enforcing. Are we a country that enforces our laws or not?"

OUTRAGEOUS GUTTING OF BORDER SECURITY
FUNDS BY HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS

Later this morning, our Action Buffet Team will be sending you alerts with direct links to new faxes and new phone notes to help you express your outrage to your three Members of Congress.

Senate Republicans are blaming House Democrats for stripping $3 billion for border security from the FY08 Defense spending bill.

As has repeatedly happened in the six years since Sep. 11 terrorist attacks, some part of Congress votes overwhelmingly (in this case the Senate) to provide sufficient funding to largely bring order and security to our borders. Then, the money gets pulled. Individual Members of Congress can claim when running for re-election that he/she has voted for these huges border funds, even though little ever actually gets through.

"What happened with this legislation is exactly why Americans don't have confidence in the U.S. Congress," said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said the extra $3 billion would cover completion of 700 miles of border fencing and 300 miles of vehicle barriers. It also would pay for 23,000 more Border Patrol officers and increase the number of beds available to detain illegal immigrants to 45,000. It would also pay for 105 ground-based radars and surveillance towers along the border, along with four new unmanned aerial vehicles to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border.

Your vote against an amendment to the Immigration Bill 1348, to make English America's offical language is astounding. On D-Day no less when we honor those that sacrificed in order to secure the bedrock character and principles of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region> . I can only surmise your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

I don't much care where you come from, what your religion is, whether you're black, white or some other color, male or female, democrat, republican or independent, but I do care when you're a United States Senator, representing citizens of <st1:country-region w:st="on">America</st1:country-region> and vote against English as the official language of the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">United States</st1:place></st1:country-region> <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Your vote reflects betrayal, political surrender, violates your pledge of allegiance, dishonors historical principle, rejects patriotism, borders on traitorous action and, in my opinion, makes you unfit to serve as a United States Senator... impeachment, recall, or other appropriate action is warrented. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Worse, 4 of you voting against English as <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region> 's official language are presidential candidates: Senator Biden, Senator Clinton, Senator Dodd, and Senator Obama. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

Those 4 Senators vying to lead America but won't or don't have the courage to cast a vote in favor of English as America's official language when 91% of American citizens want English officially designated as our language. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

This is the second time in the last several months this list of Senators have disgraced themselves as political hacks... unworthy as Senators and certainly unqualifed to serve as President of the United States. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

If America is as angry as I am, you will realize a back-lash so stunning it will literally rock you out of your panties.. and preferably, totally out of the United States Senate. <o:p></o:p>

<o:p></o:p>

The entire immigration bill is a farce... your action only confirms this really isn't about <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">America</st1:place></st1:country-region> ; it's about self-serving politics... despicable at best. <o:p></o:p>

Sometimes the message gets through

there are plenty of other cities that will still give illegals sanctuary and IDs, but this is at least a small step in the right direction:

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who has been promoting a plan to license illegal immigrants to drive, said Wednesday he has concluded the plan is unworkable.

At a news conference in Washington following a meeting with New York's congressional delegation, Spitzer said New York cannot address the problem on its own.

"I continue to believe that my proposal would have improved an unsatisfactory situation, but I have listened to the legitimate concerns of the public and those who would be affected by my proposal and have concluded that pushing forward unilaterally in the face of such strong opposition would be counterproductive," Spitzer said.
