Racial Profiling, So Be It
by Major Gen. Jerry Curry

05/18/2010

One hot summer’s day in Georgia I was standing on the sidewalk in front of Fort Benning’s Infantry Officer Candidate School Headquarters talking to a white classmate of mine about a racial flare up of some sort that had happened the previous day down in Texas. Unapologetically he said, “My Pappy back in Tennessee taught me that the reason you Negroes have to ride on the back of busses is because you are inferior.”

With my training it would have taken me less than a minute to permanently take him out, but I would have ended up in prison. And while the thought of vengeance was sweet, the penalty was so bitter that I just clenched my teeth, shut my mouth and walked away from him.

Three weeks later I stood on that same sidewalk and watched a bus pull away within that same white classmate on it; he waved to me and I waved back. He had been kicked out of the school for academic deficiencies. I stayed on, graduated, and rose through the ranks to Major General before retiring.

As a black American, back in the days before civil rights laws were passed and before Obama was even born, the least of my problems was “Racial Profiling.” In fact, I would have welcomed a little racial profiling in place of many of the indignities my family and I had to suffer. So please forgive me if I don’t seem overly sympathetic about “suspected” illegal immigrants in Arizona having to show identification papers if they commit a crime. Immigrants must adjust and conform to the society of their host country. The country is not required to adjust and conform to the values, traditions, religion and customs of the immigrant.

Supposedly being asked to show legal identification papers strikes fear into the heart of the immigrant community. The immigrants I know, including those from Europe, are made of sterner “stuff” than that, though. Throughout Europe legal citizens are asked to show identification for all sorts of things, and few take offense at the requirement. I know because my family and I lived in Europe for more than a decade.

The President of the United States and the nation’s governors are expected to protect America’s citizens. That’s what the state Arizona state legislature was doing when it passed a law requiring suspected “illegals” to prove that their presence in the state is legal. And that’s what Governor Jan Brewer was doing when she signed that bill into law.

Unfortunately if the U.S. Congress and President Obama were doing their jobs properly they would have addressed and solved the problem of illegal immigration -- since it is a federal problem -- and the state of Arizona would not have been forced to do what they’re doing now.

No doubt many who are asked to show identification papers will turn out to be legal residents of the state of Arizona -- but so what? If a highway patrolman stops one of us for speeding, we show our driver’s license and car registration and think nothing of it, unless it is to thank God that someone is checking “illegals.”

If showing papers to establish legality in the nation or state offends or angers someone, then so be it. That’s far safer than a suspicious person who was never stopped because the Highway Patrolman didn’t want to give offense, later going on to detonate a car bomb in downtown Phoenix.

I agree with Clarence W. Dupnik the sheriff of Pima County Tucson, Arizona, “What we need is assistance from the federal government in the form of effective strategies to secure the border. Additionally, the federal government must take up this issue in the form of comprehensive immigration reform policy.” To put it bluntly, our southern border is out of control and our President refuses to help us get it back under control.

It’s time for President Obama and the U.S. Congress to show some real leadership by getting control of our borders and the illegal immigrant problem. The fear of offending illegal immigrants by racial profiling at the expense of America’s security is grossly misplaced political correctness. And it is dangerous.

17 States Now Filing Versions of Arizona's Immigration Bill SB 1070

One of America's national organizations fighting against illegal immigration is announcing that 17 states are now filing versions of Arizona's SB 1070 law which is designed to help local police enforce America's existing immigration laws.

Numerous national and local polls indicated that 60-81% of Americans support local police enforcing immigration laws.

"Our national network of activists have been working overtime trying to help the state of Arizona and the brave Arizonans who have passed this bill," said William Gheen, President of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC. "Arizona no longer stands alone and we have now documented state lawmakers filing, or announcing they will file, versions of the Arizona bill in seventeen states! We will not stop until all states are protected from invasion as required by the US Constitution."

ALIPAC has documented the following 17 states are following Arizona's lead in response to citizen pressure.

ARKANSAS, IDAHO, INDIANA, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEVADA, NEW JERSEY, OHIO, OKLAHOMA, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, UTAH

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) has helped to pass some form of immigration enforcement legislation in over 30 states, while the group has also gained a national reputation for defeating legislation designed to give licenses, in-state tuition, and other taxpayer benefits to illegal aliens in 20 states.

ALIPAC's President, William Gheen is a former campaign consultant, Legislative Assistant, state lobbyist, and Assistant Sgt-At-Arms staffer in North Carolina who has turned his local experiences into a political battle plan by driving the national operations of ALIPAC.

"The Federal government has been hijacked by special interests that are neglectful of their duties and even hostile towards the rightful citizens of America," said William Gheen. "It is incumbent upon our states to protect American lives, property, jobs, wages, security, and health, when the Executive Branch fails to honor its Constitutional responsibility to do so by enforcing our existing border and immigration laws."

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC lobbied state lawmakers and AZ Governor Jan Brewer to pass SB 1070, which strictly prohibits racial profiling while empowering local police officers to enforce immigration laws.

ALIPAC's activists have been working for almost four weeks now to encourage state lawmakers across the nation to file versions of SB 1070, to help alleviate boycotts and other political antagonism towards Arizona. Citizen activist are being asked to call, e-mail, visit, and fax their state lawmakers to encourage them to support existing SB 1070 type bills or to file them as soon as possible.

News Phil Krentz: 'I Just Don't Know What's Around the Next Bend'
Posted by Leo W. Banks on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 1:28 PM

Phil Krentz, younger brother of murdered rancher Rob Krentz, called the other night and talked at length to a reporter for the first time since March 27. He opened up about his life on the ranch now, the impact that terrible day has had on him, and the support he and other family members have been getting.
He said Rob’s wife, Sue, and her two sons attended the recent National Rifle Association convention, which began May 13 in North Carolina. NRA Chief Executive Wayne LaPierre chartered a plane to fly them out there. They returned Sunday, May 16.
Krentz couldn’t go because he had to work. But he says, “It was real great deal,” and emblematic of the generosity and kindness the family has been shown.
“The support is everywhere,” Krentz says. “Everywhere I go, when people find out who I am, it's just unbelievable, the outpouring of emotion that’s going on. It seems like this has touched a nerve in a lot of people. You go somewhere and they find out what your name is, then they ask, ‘Are you any relation?’ And they say, ‘I want to offer you my condolences. This is just awful.’
“I went to Tucson, and I went to three places, and two of the three places asked me about it. I think people are starting to realize this is their back door, too, and that it can happen to them also. That's just my opinion.”
I asked what it has been like on the ground at the ranch since March 27.
“I'm seeing lots of stuff, and you hear about lots of stuff, a load or two of dope every day. So, you know, you hear these deals, and there’s no deterrence. How are you going to stop these guys? I don't know what the answer is. Is it just the politicians, the ACLU, or I don't know who has a finger on everything so they won't let anything get done.
“All I know is they’re putting crosshairs on everybody's head down here, and that includes law enforcement and anybody that works in this terrain. Every time I leave here I'm, well, I won't say I'm scared, because I refuse to be scared. But you just wonder what the day is going to entail.”
What do you mean ‘crosshairs’?
“Anything can happen, Leo. Maybe I might get shot, too. If I happen up on the right deal at the right time and the right place, I may get shot, too.
Do you go out working on the ranch alone?
“I have to go out alone. There just aren’t enough of us around, with my nephew and my son and me, we've got too much to do. We have to go separate ways in order to get everything done all day. And I'm not going to let that scare me. But I think I'm more paranoid about my son and my nephew.”
Long pause.
“It's paranoia. I just don't know what's around the next bend, if you know what I'm saying. Probably it's nothing. I've never had to worry about this before. It’s always been kind of a safe place. We knew they (drug smugglers) were there, and they just kind of went their way and you went yours, and then this thing happened with Rob, so it just took it up to another level.
“Unless something is done about it, I think people's lives in the United States are really in jeopardy.”
How so?
“Because there’ll be no recourse. The cartels can do what they want, and they know it.
“You know, this whole deal is not an immigration issue. This whole issue is about people's safety and securing the border. You just don't know what is crossing the border, and we've been saying that for years. And Rob and whoever else you talk to who has lived around here and seen what we've seen, it's not a safe place anymore. Some of the people you see, it just makes you wonder, and the things that you find. I know some people who have found prayer rugs and stuff like that in various locations, so you really wonder.”
I mentioned the story of Terrie and Glen Stoller, winter visitors whose home is north of the Krentz ranch, near Apache. They recently sold their home and fled to California because of the growing danger.
“But my roots are here,” Krentz said. “I'm not going to be run off from here. Even us, you know, the ranch has been in the family for more than a hundred years, but every generation has bought it from the previous generation and we just eek out a living here.
“Everybody thinks that because of what we own and whatnot, and sure, we own a lot, but we just live from year to year. We don't get rich off of this. In order to do something like this, you just really have to love the lifestyle.
“But this is starting to get to be more than just a lifestyle to me. This is getting to be, like, I'll be damned if they’re going to whip me down. I'm here until something gets done about it or I get killed or whatever. Somebody has to stick up for this country because it is going to hell in a hand basket. Maybe this is my part of trying to protect my country.”
Krentz said he was nervous speaking out for the first time, especially with Rob’s killer still at large.
“I know we haven’t talked about anything about that, but I’m kind of nervous. I want them to catch this guy. That’s my main goal and everything else will fall into place. It’d be nice to have some kind of closure.”
Krentz spoke frankly, but without bitterness, and hoped nothing he said would cause any more upset than has already occurred. He said there has been enough of that all the way around.
“I don't want anybody else to get hurt out of this, any law enforcement or anything like that,” Krentz said. “They need to be on the border, and they need to do their jobs, and they’re paid to do their jobs. But we've got to protect them also. I just don't want anybody else to get hurt in this whole damn deal.” http://www.tucsonweekly.com/blogs/TheRange/

Those democrats are scoundrels and will sell their souls to the devil for the latino vote. They already have a steady voting base specifically, the lazy democrats who can work but don't caz they would just rather get that democratic check in the mail.

This is my take on this here matter! :103631605

Lets boycott LA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell yes we are going to boycott LA. Stick your nose in our business? I don't think so.

Posted by: Ted B | May 12, 2010 at 05:52 PM

Yes. Singling out Latinos to be questioned on their citizenship is extremely offensive -- it will mean the loss of business and reputation for AZ for years.
We should divest ourselves of AZ-based companies too. CALPERS are you listening?

Posted by: Chris | May 12, 2010 at 05:59 PM

Thought we might go back to Disneyland this year or next for our 5 year old.
We'll go to Texas or Colorado, now.
It's amazing how our new law, which is a mirror of federal law, has, supposedly, created all this backlash.
I don't think it's the law.
I think it's the required ENFORCEMENT of the law. The law has been on federal books for years, yet, not enforced to hard. We are doing it and people got mad. Like we're supposed to lie down like beaten cur dogs and let illegal aliens walk all over us like they do in California.
Stop it before it ends up like your state.
And the LA city council can't even do right for their own city, yet, they scream the loudest for people who don't even belong here. Go figure.
Read the law people, it's only 16 pages. An easy read. The truth is there, care to see it?

please do, we have enough regressives here as it is.

Posted by: howardx | May 12, 2010 at 06:04 PM

LA is WRONG to boycott Arizona. I say that as a lifelong Southern California resident. LA Mayor & Council that voted to boycott have politically sown the wind, and will reap the whirlwind... i.e. voter backlash. What happened to PROTECTING AMERICA'S INTERESTS!

Posted by: Steve Anderson | May 12, 2010 at 06:07 PM

Maybe if the City Council would have read the US Constitution and law first, and then the Arizona law next, they would see that they are the same, so maybe they should have voted to boycott travel to all the other states too.

So, let's boycott Arizona. Let's take away our business from one of the 50 states in our union because we disagree with their politics. Let's take away millions of the income that they receive. Yeah, let's make a stand. So what if a few hundred people lose their jobs in Arizona because of lack of business. I'ts what they deserve! How dare they think that they can make their own state laws! WE must make a stand to let the world know that we are for the downtrodden immigrants. Let's empower these law-breakers even further. Let's give them amnesty. A full pardon. Yeah Mexico. Send us your poor, hungry etc. And if a few thousand siqueiros (narco hit men) get mixed in the crowd. So what? We're used to crime here. We''ll accept anything. But please don't ask anyone for their ID card. That's racial. And by the way I'm a U.S. citizen of Mexican ancestry.

La City Council should mind its own back yard. How is our budget looking? Clowns.

I am eliminating all future business with Los Angeles - and I live here in CA !! City of angles my butt.

Boycotts start with letter B like Boomerang, they usually strike back the originator. AZ can start pulling the plug on LA's power (since 21 percent comes from a plant in AZ), many other repercussions may happen, also many Angelinos will boycott LA if you will, finally a lof of Americans, including many MEXifornians, will start taking nice vacations in Arizona....
Alltogether LA CC is out of touch with the people who largely support SB1070 and childish boycotts will harm LA much more than AZ. It is self suicide for a city that's already crumbling

I live in Long Beach and I am going to start boycotting LA!
I intend to vacation in AZ in the fall.

The videos at the top of most stories nowadays in the LATimes are completely useless and do not provide insight. The only reason I come here is to read the "LA Now" section and occasionally an article here and there. I think that those of us who come here come to read the material, not have it read by people who are not professional or camera-friendly, who also decide to give us their opinion on the matter. Please, stop it with those videos at the top. They are just annoying and will drive readers away from your website.

This is nothing but a blatant political move to appease Hispanic voters before the Nov. elections. L.A. should NOT boycott Arizona, and Arizona shouldn't boycott L.A.
What L.A. should do is enforce the laws against ILLEGAL immigrants.
If L.A. really thinks Arizona is like Nazi Germany, then most if not all of W. Europe is still under Nazi control. Police in France can stop anybody and ask for their papers for any reason.
Would any L.A. City Council member not carry a passport or valid travel papers when abroad?
If L.A. really thinks it's fine to have an open door policy for ILLEGAL immigrants, let the L.A. Mayor say so.

At least in Cali, we still teach ethnic studies... Arizona has forgotten that other than Native Americans, they ARE also illegal immigrants. Aside from what's being discussed, Arizona is having an identity crisis. to deny children American studies that include contributions from all people, including all immigrants that made this country what it is, is the travesty.

California is an joke. The whole state is over run with illegals. Duh?
I doubt Arizona would take their IOU's anyway.

Posted by: john | May 12, 2010 at 06:21 PM

Taxpayers of LA and CA in general should be happy to see that their goverment will be reviewing all existing contracts with AZ to see if there are ways to get out of them.
Hummm; Lawers reviewing contracts looking for loopholes - that won't cost much money - but when you have so much extra money like LA does I guess this is the best way to spend it. Wonder if any "journalists" will keep track of how many tax dollars are wasted in this exercise.
BTW - Don't live in CA or AZ but do live in the USA and most of us support AZ -- so when we figure out how to boycott CA -- You're Welcome!

I live here and I'm going to boycott L.A. also. Yay Arizona! The majority of people who live here are behind you! Keep it up!

This is what I've been posting on other local LA newsblogs on this topic.
"This is absurd and ridiculous. LA needs to leave AZ alone and focus all this hubris into tackling its own multitude of problems; not the least of which is illegal immigration. LA will only suffer (even more than it already has) for blindly allying with the wrong cause. The only reason LA should be complaining about AZ's policies is that it will drive more illegals here to usurp more of our dwindling resources. Then LA will have no choice but to get up off its pretentiously righteous butt to do something about it."
Yes, I (an LA native) think AZ should defend its actions and fight back with boycotts if necessary. There are a lot of LA residents opposed to the AZ bans by LA City Council; I believe more opposed than support it. Unfortunately, we will all suffer for their haste and immaturity.

This is SUCH a bad move by the L.A. City Council. They are in a distinct political minority. Huge majorities of Americans and an even bigger majority of Arizonans support the new laws. I've already seen dozens of comments from many people around the Internet planning to boycott California in response by skipping trips to Disneyland and elsewhere. Is this really the kind of financial and public relations nightmare California, which is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, really needs? If it all goes south financially for L.A. in this affair, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Posted by: TheMadKing | May 12, 2010 at 06:24 PM

AZ should boycott anyone who is boycotting them. What AZ does within AZ's borders is AZ's business and AZ's business alone.

Question (If you have the brain ability to logically explore the problem):
What are all you idiot, liberal, bleeding heart, emo 20 something’s going to do in the near future when the tax man takes 50-75% of your earnings to feed, house, educate, medicate, propagate, provide welfare funds and food stamps for the existing 11 to 16 MILLION illegal aliens who are certain to multiply?
Don’t even think of raising a family. You won’t be able to afford it… and besides, the illegals will be doing that by proxy for you. Think of illegal immigration as your personal forced adoption program.
Now, you still think that Arizona’s law is a Nazi law?
If you types weren’t so intellectually tasked, you’d understand clearly that demographics is simply another form of warfare, conquest and culture destruction.
It's a very obvious "No"

Interesting responses.....it is always good to get both sides of any issue.
Wasn't Arizona the same state that refused to honor Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday as a National Holiday?
That is until the N.F.L. moved the Super Bowl to another location as a reaction and groups started canceling conventions and contracts in wonderful Arizona. Things changed rather quickly in Arizona.

I'm buying everything I can in arizona and boycotting Los Angeles... the idiots on the IGNORANT L.A. City council obviously have not read the Arizona's law that was voted on... It says exactly what the Federal Government law enacted as far as Illegal immigration... I hope Arizona cuts off the water and electric going to L.A...
No wonder Los Angeles is going Bankrupt... It's Legalized Mafia at its finest...

Posted by: Irieiz | May 12, 2010 at 06:29 PM

I believe as a government LA and anyone else should keep their dirty noses out of Arizona's business! Did you see Arizona boycott California for passing a law that bans gay marrage? Dose California have the money to support ILLEGAL INVADERS in Arizona? California can't even support its own American born citizens, much less the millions that snuck into the country already! As a California citizen I'm sick and tired of paying the bill for illegals out of our taxes. We do not get a free ride in any shape of form. The IRS won't wait, State of CA, CA DMV won't wait. They want the money now to pay for the ILLEGALS! Enough already! Mexico need to have responsibility for their own people!
