And Urge Them to Support the Grassley Amendment!

Yesterday, true immigration reformers won two crucial legislative victories!
During debate on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spending bill, the U.S. Senate adopted two crucial amendments. The first amendment, offered by Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), requires DHS to complete all 700 miles of the border fence by the end of 2010 so that it will not just stop illegal alien vehicle traffic but also pedestrian traffic. The second amendment, offered by Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), will protect American jobs by making E-Verify, the program that allows employers to ensure that they hire legal American workers, permanent. The Sessions Amendment also requires employers who do business with the federal government to use the program.
E-Verify is a great tool for America's employers. While the Sessions Amendment is a great victory for people who want to protect American jobs, there is another amendment, offered by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), that the Senate may consider today that would build on yesterday's victory.

E-Verify only allows employers to check the work authorization status of new hires but not current employees. Illegal aliens who currently hold jobs they never should have had can continue in those jobs because their employer, who may have unknowingly hired that illegal alien in the past, cannot use E-Verify today to ensure that they employ only legal workers. Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) has offered an amendment that would, for the first time, allow employers to use E-Verify to check work eligibility for all their employees — not just new hires.
With unemployment now at a 25-year high, the Grassley Amendment would act as a true stimulus plan for unemployed Americans! If an employer discovers illegal aliens on his payroll, that employer can free up jobs for Americans who are out of work!
Unfortunately, FAIR has learned that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) may attempt to block the Senate from voting on the Grassley Amendment. Late last night, Reid filed a cloture motion. This motion will block all further debate on the bill and would block votes on any more amendments. This means the Senate could pass the DHS bill without even allowing a vote on the Grassley Amendment!
Blocking a vote on this amendment would represent nothing more than pandering to the special interests who do not want our immigration laws enforced. Even well-known amnesty advocate and chair of the Senate Immigration Subcommittee Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said yesterday on the Senate floor that E-Verify "probably should" be used to verify the work authorization status of existing employees! That is exactly what the Grassley Amendment would do.
We need your help!! Here's what you can do to help FAIR pass the Grassley Amendment and open up illegally-held jobs for American Workers:
  1. Call your Senators, and tell them to support the Grassley E-Verify Amendment. (Click here to find your Senators' telephone numbers.)
  2. Urge the Senate to oppose cloture until Senator Grassley gets a vote on his amendment!
With nearly 15 million Americans out of work — and with more than 8 million illegal aliens holding jobs in the United States — the least Reid can do is allow for an up-or-down vote on this crucial measure!
  3. Call Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at (202)-224-3542. Tell him that it's unfair that illegal aliens can continue to hold jobs while so many Americans are hurting. Urge Reid to ignore special interests and allow the Senate to vote on the Grassley Amendment!

Sign the Petition to keep Workplace Enforcement Amendments in Homeland Security Spending Bill

Updated: Monday, July 13, 2009, 8:01 AM
Defend unemployed Americans and returning veterans by signing a petition urging Pres. Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid to keep four workplace enforcement amendments in the Homeland Security Spending Bill. This petition will be delivered DAILY. In February, these three leaders stripped the House E-Verify amendment from the economic stimulus package during a backroom, secret meeting. Last week, the Senate overwhelmingly passed provisions to make E-Verify mandatory, complete the border fence and move forward with no-match letters, so sign the petition NOW to keep these provisions in the bill! Everyone,

--Following is the published letters report for the period June 14 – July 4

--As always, this memo is intended for participants in this program, plus a few friends, and not for wide distribution. Editors tend not to publish letters they suspect are part of an organized letter-writing campaign. So, please refrain from cc:ing us on your letters-to-the-editor and from talking about the program in public forums.

--And please remember to include the full name of the paper that ran your letter and the date.

-- NumbersUSA forwards these letters to you so you can share in the success of the program and see the published efforts of our writers. As a reminder, however, the letters are personal and do not necessarily represent NumbersUSA positions.

RECOMMENDED WRITING STYLE: We recognize that each of you has the ability to make your own decisions about how to write your letters. NumbersUSA's opinion is that letters are more likely to be published and more likely to help our cause of dramatic immigration reductions if they are written in a temperate, self-controlled way that avoids name-calling and arguments based on race, religion or national origin. A strong use of a few facts, voting records, concise analysis and sometimes humor seems the best way to advance our arguments. We encourage specific criticism of open-border politicians and others, but caution against "in your face" rhetoric. Firm but civil argument tends to get the best results. You, of course, are free to disagree. We applaud all published letters that advocate for our immigration-reduction goals, but we may not disseminate those that move outside the tone that we encourage, a tone that many newspapers include in their own letters to the editor guidelines.

--Thanks so much for your hard work and persistence.

Mexico handles illegal immigration much differently

In response to the recent editorial titled “Mexico accommodates English-only speakers.”

Yes to what you wrote, “this region (Mexico) depends on English-speaking visitors for its survival.”

However, you are talking about tourists there. You then ask, is that so different from here? The answer is yes, very different. Unless you are discussing the annual Colorado tourist flow and in those cases, we should have airport, hotel, car rentals and ski information available in multiple languages, I do agree there.

This, however, is not comparable to “Immigrants from Mexico and other Latin countries have come here to work.” Again, Mexico accommodates languages for her visa tourists but arrests and deports overnight anyone who attempts to work there without a legal permit to do so.

Read its visa guidelines and understand it doesn't waste time in enforcement. Mexico has a very swift justice system.

America needs to do the exact same thing in exactly the same way. On the street, instantly arrest and deport any/all immigrant violations.

For you see, Mexico does not deal with lawsuits like the ACLU versus Weld County over misuse and abuse of tax money and stolen ID's, etc., and that is why.

Stop the budget policy madness

Illegal aliens would make out like bandits in the new budget that was being debated in the Assembly starting last Wednesday. I sure hope you join me in ringing the phone off the hook at the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-362-9472 and the Governor’s office at 608-266-1212 to try to stop this madness.

Just two years ago, Wisconsin joined the vast majority of other states (47-3 now) and stopped issuing driver licenses to illegal aliens. For some reason, our Legislature wants to take us back to those bad old days. Illegal aliens would get the ultimate weapon in their competition with Americans for jobs — the privilege to drive legally.

Are you aware that while 14 million Americans are looking for nonfarm work, almost 8 million illegal aliens hold nonfarm jobs? Notice I said “nonfarm,” taking away the old “jobs Americans won’t do” argument.

And DMV offices would look like what they did in 2006-07, clogged up with illegals taking all the written test machines and a huge number of the driving test slots. Good luck taking a test or titling a car — wait in line behind these people that shouldn’t even be in the U.S. in the first place, please!

Wisconsin would also become a huge magnet for illegal aliens from other states, much like we found out when Minnesota stopped licensing them about three years before Wisconsin did. Vanloads crossed the border into Wisconsin and claiming fake addresses to get a license.

Ask Tennessee why they scrapped their program for driver cards like the ones proposed here — massive fraud and too much of a magnet for illegals from all over the country.

In addition, legal citizens would have to show a higher level of identity and birth documents than illegals under this plan. The DMV would have to make a list to fit the illegals needs, not the list the rest of us legal folks have to stick to for our legal documents.

Like it so far? Oh, it gets better. How about in-state tuition for illegal aliens, while legal Americans from other states would have to pay more for Wisconsin college than the student who isn’t in the country, let alone the school, legally!

And how about making law enforcement keep racial data on traffic stops so later on they can be reamed out by socio-ethnocentric groups and other race-mongerers over the numbers. I say we all know who passes us and who we pass on the highway... that’s data enough. The vehicle gets pulled over, not the person.

Please contact your legislators at the phone number above, or at this link, which takes you to your own representatives once you enter your home address: http://www.legis.state.wi.us/w3asp/waml/waml.aspx

Thanks, and let’s give ‘em a fight on these bad policy proposals.

Letter: Enforcement is solution to illegal immigration

A good definition of insanity is doing something over and over again, even though it doesn’t work. This is a point to reflect upon as various lobbies endorse the lunacy of offering yet another legalization (amnesty) for illegal aliens and pathway for them to become citizens.

Every time we have done this in the past, we’ve only had more illegal immigration to follow. But should it surprise us that when we reward behavior, we get more of it? Furthermore, let’s consider how we debase the worth of our citizenship by giving it to people who hold our laws in comtempt.

With more than 11 million Americans out of work, one can reasonably assume that the estimated 12 million illegal aliens in this country are taking a significant number of jobs that Americans would like to have. The solution to illegal immigration is firm and steady enforcement of our immigration laws. Faced with this prospect, many illegal aliens would go home on their own.

It’s happened before. In 1954 the Eisenhower Administration determined that illegal immigration was getting out of control. Rather than contemplate amnesty, the administration launched a swift crackdown. Most who departed left on their own accord when they saw that enforcement was serious. For more than a decade after the crackdown, illegal immigration was not a major problem.
We do not lack the means to deal with illegal immigration. What we are lacking now is the will.

D.A. King: Dustin Inman's cause of death? Illegal immigration

By D.A. King
Guest Columnist

Billy and Kathy Inman of Woodstock should be in our prayers today. Their only son was killed nine years ago today. An agonizingly sad anniversary they bear with incredible dignity and strength. Cause of death? Illegal immigration.

Dustin Inman was one of the tens of thousands of Americans who have needlessly lost their lives because the American government has refused to secure American borders or reasonably enforce American immigration and employment laws.

Dustin Inman was a 16-year-old American youth killed in a senseless traffic collision on Father's Day weekend in 2000. He was on his way to a weekend of family camping and fishing in the North Georgia mountains.

Despite being in the United States illegally, the man later charged with being the driver of the car that killed Dustin, Gonzalo Harrell-Gonzalez, was able to obtain a valid North Carolina driver's license using his Mexican birth certificate and a Mexican issued matricula consular ID card.

On June 16, 2000, a speeding vehicle driven by Harrell-Gonzalez hurtled into the rear of the Inman family's car while it was stopped at a red light in Ellijay - killing Dustin instantly.

When she regained consciousness after five weeks in a coma, Kathy learned of the death of her only son. She also learned that because of spinal injuries received in the wreck, she would spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. Nearly a decade later, anxiously waiting to hear from her many doctors if she will need to have more surgery - this time to relieve pressure on her brain - Kathy struggles with constant pain, both physical and emotional. But at least a million illegal aliens entered our nation last year.

Because of their injuries in the wreck, Kathy and Billy were not able to attend the funeral of their son, who today would be a 25 year-old American looking for a better life in his own country.

Harrell-Gonzalez escaped custody on the day of the crash and has never been brought to justice. He is still free.

Billy Inman will tell you that he blames the government sworn to protect him and his family for his son's death more than he blames the illegal alien who killed him.

Say a little prayer for our nation as well.

Crazies masquerading as "civil rights advocates" who will do or say anything to promote and defend the crime of illegal immigration, and the illegals who have become a cash cow for these shameless charlatans, are hard at work to convince the American people that it is the illegals who are the real victims.

Case in point: Aimed at stopping the super-effective 287 (g) local enforcement program, along with Amnesty International, the ACLU's "Georgia Detention Watch" staged an all-day vigil in front of the Immigration Customs Enforcement Atlanta Detention office last week to protest any and all local enforcement of American immigration laws. They cite the case of Roberto Martinez Medina, a 39-year old illegal alien who died of natural causes three months ago while in detention at the Stewart Detention facility.

His death proves that immigration enforcement is a human-rights violation, according to these anti-enforcement radicals. While holding signs that read "Liberty and Justice for All," "No human being is illegal" and "STOP 287 (g)" at their protest against enforcement promoted by Jerry Gonzalez and the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials, these people argued that because thousands of illegal aliens who landed in Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren's jail were then deported, the "undocumented immigrant community" lives in fear in Georgia. Thank you, Sheriff Warren.

Another reason to say a little prayer: Today, President Obama is scheduled to begin the 2009 attempt to repeat the 1986 reward process for the 20 million or so illegal aliens now present in the U.S. by legalizing them and granting a path to citizenship.

Think of it as an early - but calculated - "get out the vote" campaign. But don't think of it as a way to stop illegal immigration.
Very much in support of immigration law enforcement, the Inman family is holding its own 7 p.m. vigil in memory of Dustin today at Rolling Hills Cemetery in Acworth. Billy says he hopes that keeping their story alive may in some way make a difference that would prevent another family from "going through the mess we have."

Me too, Billy. I'll say a prayer.

D.A. King is president of the Cobb-based Dustin Inman Society, which is opposed to illegal immigration and named in memory of the Inman youth. On the Web: www.TheDustinInmanSociety.org

Open forum: How best to spend less on next budget

Recommendation to County Council President Phil Andrews on how to spend less in Montgomery County:

-Quit wasting our tax money to support these illegal immigrants that have come to county.

-Shut down the day labor centers funded by the county.

-Shut down the Women Children and Infants Clinic since it provides free medical care to illegal immigrants here.

-Quit funding CASA of Maryland as this organization's goal is support to illegal immigrants.

-Release all Hispanic translators and interpreters If these immigrants don't understand English, then they don't deserve any services either.

Most of us legal residents of this county really get tired of paying taxes and then seeing our tax money poured down the drain and wasted on illegal immigrants.

There must be no amnesty for Illegals here ever.

Opposed to Amnesty

To the Editor:

In your editorial “Immigration: It’s Time” (June 19), you tar the people who oppose so-called comprehensive immigration reform as “anti-amnesty posses” and “nativist dead-enders.“

I’m sure you can take any policy and find nogoodniks who support it, but the merits or lack thereof are what should be important to your readers.

Here’s some of the thinking that motivates me to oppose amnesty. In 1971, John P. Holdren, now President Obama’s head of the Office of Science and Technology Policy and in 1975 a professor of mine at Berkeley, and Paul R. Ehrlich of Stanford University introduced an equation showing that human impact on the environment equals population times consumption per capita times technology.

According to the Pew Research Center, the population of the United States, the country with the largest per capita consumption, will grow from the current 306 million to 438 million in 2050, and 82 percent of that growth will be due to mass immigration. The environmental implications of that population growth are staggering. Debate that.

Letters to the editor: Bill hurts workers

I strongly disagree with Thomas Elias' assessment of Sen. Dianne Feinstein's farm jobs bill.

This legislation is a dagger aimed straight at the hearts of unskilled American workers.

Feinstein's legislation is called, "A bill to improve agricultural job opportunities, benefits, and security for (illegal) aliens in the United States and for other purposes." Senator Feinstein should demonstrate a little more love and devotion for her country by writing legislation entitled, "A bill to improve job opportunities, benefits, and employment security for citizens of the United States."

Sen. Feinstein's proposed legislation requires that illegal immigrants "show that they worked 863 hours or 150 work days during the past two years." This means that 79.5 percent of these illegal agricultural workers' time, when not harvesting crops, can be spent displacing unskilled Americans, blue collar workers and high school kids from the workplace in restaurants, the fast-food industry, car washes, construction, building trades, the restaurant and hotel industries, and gardening.

The displacement list of unskilled American workers is endless. Our jobless rate is 9.4 percent nationally, and 11.5 percent here in California. For non-college American minorities the national jobless rates are horrifying. For African Americans it's 15 percent and 11.3 percent for Latinos. Many of these figures apply to unskilled and less-educated Americans who are forced to compete with illegal immigrants.

We've got the highest national jobless rate in more than 25 years. Feinstein's legislation demonstrates just what a ticking time bomb she's become on the subject of illegal immigration.

Inger Eberhart/Letter to the Editor: 'Path to citizenship' would reward law-breakers

I'm glad letter writer Tim Tanko ("Open-borders foes not racist, but path to citizenship is needed," Sunday's MDJ) noted that there is nothing un-American about standing up for secure borders and an equal application of American immigration and employment laws.

He correctly notes that the constant name-calling from the open borders, anti-enforcement extremists has rendered the words "hate" and "racist" all but meaningless. Not that the fact stops them from spewing their own vicious "hate speech" in place of any reasonable argument against the majority of Americans who want controlled, sustainable and lawfully regulated immigration.

I can attest to the fact that anyone who stands up to the open borders crowd will be called many ugly and ridiculous names.
That being noted, I must respectfully but adamantly disagree with Mr. Tanko and anyone who thinks the way to handle illegal aliens in the United States is to reward them with American citizenship.

The constant false argument advanced by the amnesty-again charlatans is it would be difficult to deport 20 million illegal aliens in a short period of time, so there is only one other option: legalization and citizenship.

This is a false argument. It is nonsense and it is dangerous.

The reasonable third choice for solving the illegal immigration problem is to work toward the gradual but steady attrition of the illegal population through enforcement of the laws already in place.

We tried legalization in 1986. We have proven beyond all doubt that it does not stop illegal immigration.

The open borders lobby points us to what works at stopping illegal immigration with their objections to any and all actual enforcement of the law. We know enforcement works. In literally every community where it is tried, illegal aliens leave.

The illegal immigration crisis, now being all but ignored by the media in hopeful preparation for the Obama amnesty scheme took more than 30 years to develop. It cannot and will not be solved overnight.

Local law enforcement's use of tools like the now 13-year-old federal 287(g) program which locates illegal aliens who have landed in county jails for crimes in addition to illegal immigration, works. It not only gets results in their deportation, but also causes many illegal aliens who migrate to friendlier counties in fear of apprehension.

Use of the federal E-Verify database to ensure that American jobs go to eligible employees and use of the SAVE program to be sure that public benefits are distributed to legal residents both result in illegal aliens leaving communities where they are used.

It is enforcement of our laws that stops and deters crime, including illegal immigration. Having tried rewarding illegals with a path to citizenship in 1986, it is past time that we try strict and fair enforcement of existing laws as a method of controlling that crime.

Rewarding criminals with exactly what they broke the law to obtain is not a workable or sensible method of stopping criminal behavior.
Another legalization and a path to citizenship program would be sending a message all over the world that to become an American citizen all one needs to do is to break into the USA and wait for the next amnesty.

There is more to being an American than being able to escape our Border Patrol Agents and depend on the illegal alien lobby to smear real Americans who support secure borders.

Letter: Oppose tuition deal for illegal immigrants

To the editor:

While thousands of New Hampshire parents lay awake at night unsure if they are able to afford their children's college education, our federal government is looking for taxpayers to supplement in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants under the DREAM Act (S 729 and HR 1751).

While, the intent of the DREAM Act seems honorable, sending disadvantage illegal immigrant's children to college, the reality is a nightmare for struggling American families. Rosemary Jenks, NumbersUSA director of government relations, conducted an analysis of the DREAM Act to reveal the nightmare:

The act's amnesty provision applies to all illegal immigrants' "kids" up to age 35.

To qualify the illegal immigrant will not have to prove a claim.
The taxpayers will supplement additional cost to allow the federal government to investigate any claims that are false.

The illegal immigrant parent who broke the law will be given a fast track to qualify for U.S. citizenship.

The DREAM Act would remove a key provision of the federal ban on in-state tuition for future illegal immigrants.

The act does not cap or limit the numbers qualified.

The DREAM Act is a massive give away of higher education. Since the number of open college admission enrollment slots are fixed for every illegal immigrant admitted an American student or legal resident will be turned away.

There are plenty of lower-income citizens who need educational assistance.

The DREAM Act would give illegal immigrants preference and put lower-income citizens at risk to a better education. In addition, it would put college out of reach for many middle-class citizens.

The DREAM Act is poorly written and supporters place the interest of illegal immigrants above the American family. This entitlement creates a higher incentive for illegal immigration into our country.

Call Congressman Paul Hodes and Sen. Judd Gregg today and oppose the DREAM Act.

Annette Cameron
Nashua, N.H.

Stand up against illegal immigration

Have you ever wondered how illegal aliens in America get jobs and government assistance without having a Social Security number? Illegal immigration is growing in our country, and here are a few problems being caused.

According to Numbers USA, there were about 7.7 million illegal aliens employed in the United States in 2008.

Employers need to clamp down on who they hire, and severe penalties should be imposed on those who hire illegal immigrants.

With illegal documents, a false name, and Social Security number, illegal immigrants can get access to health care and government assistance. If an illegal is put in prison, taxpayers pay more than $120 billion for the costs. The prison provides the basic essentials for the illegal immigrant to be in America.

Since many illegal immigrants do not have a Social Security number, they cannot contribute their share of taxes. Illegal aliens displaced American taxpayers at a cost of $133 billion of taxes, according to Harvard professor George Borjas.

Illegal immigrants are eventually going to overpopulate our country. Our borders need to be watched more sufficiently, and our employers need to clamp down and monitor who they hire.

America needs to stand up against illegal immigration.

Where's the compassion?

Public Forum Letter

As I read "Lawsuit looms over SB81," regarding groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union and Latino lobbyists threatening to sue over the "rights" of illegal aliens to hold taxpayer-funded jobs, it left me wondering about the rights of U.S. citizens to hold them.

The common tactic of these pro-illegal immigration groups is to accuse as racist or part of a "hate group" any American who voices a concern that our immigration laws are not being enforced. This is an overused but effective means of slapping an unofficial gag order on American citizens, who are among the most compassionate and generous people.

I respect our naturalized citizens who value our country enough to come here legally more than I do some other citizens who take it for granted. My beef is not with any racial or ethnic group. I don't care if you're white, Canadian, black, brown, yellow or plaid. If you're one of the 7.7 million people who are now illegally holding American jobs while 14 million unemployed Americans are desperately seeking them, that's wrong.

SB81 doesn't even affect private businesses that still hire illegal aliens; only taxpayer-funded jobs. Where is the compassion for the American people?

Who’s to blame?

The authors say there are "six key factors combined to make the state impossible to govern." Their arguments are good, and in part show why the state is in such a financial mess.

But the "politically correct" article leaves out perhaps the most important reason our state is going bankrupt -- the cost of illegal aliens.

Education, incarceration, providing healthcare -- add up all the state's expenditures for illegal aliens and you have gone a long way toward balancing the budget.

Foreign teachers: Shouldn't we be hiring U.S. citizens instead?

Posted by Letters editor

Here's an idea: Let's not give our jobs to foreigners

After reading "State schools reach overseas for teachers," I've heard it all [NWSunday, June 28>.

Now we're bringing in foreign teachers! First, it was only farm workers, then landscapers and maids and now we've gone to importing nurses, engineers and finally teachers. The way Washington is going there won't be any jobs left for Americans. Maybe we can import some politicians who really represent the people who elected them and not their own agenda.

This country has got to start thinking about our citizens and their plight. In the news every day, more and more people are losing their jobs, their retirements and their 401(k)s and return to work just to survive.

Yet we have 12 visa programs to bring in foreigners. We let 1 million people come here legally each year. We have 20 million people who have stayed here when their visas expired or who were smuggled into the country. Politicians cry about illegal immigrants and their sad stories while they storm our streets and demand rights. Many of them have broken our laws, have forged identities and use our services that were meant for our citizens.

Since when were cheaters, stealers and liars held in such regard?

Greedy employers hiring immigrants for cheap while ousting citizens

As an out-of-work U.S. citizen who has been employed as an instructor, I find this employer practice to be outrageous. It is another example of how immigration benefits are privatized and employers pay less while costs are socialized, with increased unemployment in a depressed economy. There is no shortage of teachers, only a shortage of teaching positions that pay a middle-class wage.

This program was invented by greedy employers in 1990. You may learn more about the corruption that is inherent in this program by reading online, "The Greedy Gates Immigration Gambit."

Then, apply pressure to end the practice of reserving high-skill positions for young immigrants -- and displacing experienced American citizens. You may help to save your own job and stop this race to the bottom.

Immigration reform article translation

April 27, 2009

Your April 17 article, "Supporters to push for immigration reform," opens with "Immigrant supporters wasted no time in announcing ... (a) push for comprehensive immigration reform ..."

Translating this into frank English (as George Orwell would have urged), yields "Illegal alien supporters announced a push for comprehensive capitulation to Mexico."

Congestion caused Americans to spend an extra 4.2 billion hours on the roads and forced them to buy 2.8 billion extra gallons of fuel, according to the authors of the Texas Transportation Institute’s 2009 Urban Mobility Report.
The total economic impact of congestion was $87.2 billion in 2007, up about $100 million from 2006.
Trucking and the economic effects of delayed delivery times played a significant role in the findings, authors said.
Congestion might have been even greater in 2007 if it weren’t for high prices of diesel fuel and gasoline.
“While traffic congestion has eased somewhat, it remains a significant issue for the transportation industry, especially in urban areas,” said Thomas Brahms, executive director and CEO of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, in the report summary.
The authors studied 439 metropolitan areas to make their determinations.
The average individual “wasted” 36 hours in traffic and 24 gallons of fuel in 2007. Truckers who buy their own fuel, who are paid by the mile, and who are subject to on-time deliveries have little choice but to get caught in urban rush hours, which pads the averages.
The report does offer possible solutions to congestion problems.
“One cost-effective method to address the issue is to update traffic signal timing for pedestrian and vehicular traffic while updating traffic signal infrastructure to use more energy-efficient components,” Brahms stated.
“These transportation investments can be underway quickly and yield lasting improvements to the nation’s economic productivity, infrastructure and environment beginning immediately.”
The report states that most people believe higher fuel prices are not the answer to solving congestion problems.
According to the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, trucks make up less than 10 percent of the traffic but foot 36 percent of the bill for infrastructure through taxes and fees.

Concerned Citizens and Immigration Reformers,

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT ***** PLEASE READ ***** if you are in a hurry then at least read all of the bold type info.

KEEP ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FROM GETTING AMERICAN JOBS WITH STIMULUS DOLLARS. WE NEED TO HELP UNEMPLOYED CITIZENS and more.....
Will you help spread in every way possible the word about our NEW PETITION campaign to persuade President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Senate Leader Reid to retain E-Verify amendments in the Homeland Security spending bill?
Denying illegal immigrants the ability to get jobs in America is about the most important way to fix the problem.
The U.S. Senate last week adopted four immigration-reduction amendments to the DHS Appropriations bill, H.R. 2898. They are:
  • <LI style="mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3" class=MsoNormal>The Sessions amendment, which would permanently reauthorize E-Verify and mandate its use by all government contractors and subcontractors; <LI style="mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3" class=MsoNormal>The DeMint amendment, which would force DHS to complete the 700 miles of border fencing which has already been approved and funded; <LI style="mso-margin-top-alt: auto; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo3" class=MsoNormal>The Vitter amendment, which would force the Social Security Administration to continue their "No-Match" program (DHS Sec. Napolitano announced the termination of this program); and
  • The Grassley amendment, which would allow employers that use E-Verify to run all of their current employees through the system, not just new hires.
The House-passed version only included a two-year extension of E-Verify. The bill will now be taken up by a House-Senate conference committee to reconcile the differences between the two bills.
Last February, President Obama, US House Speaker Pelosi and US Senate Leader Reid stripped language out of the Stimulus Bill that would have kept illegal aliens from getting Stimulus jobs. We believe these three Democrats will strip out the Senate-passed measures later this week if we don't create a nationwide uproar ahead of time.

NumbersUSA has initiated a petition campaign (see below) to convince President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Senate Leader Reid to retain these enforcement measures. (This is a different kind of petition campaign in that as soon as somebody signs one, we will send it to the White House. Pelosi and Reid, on the other hand, will get daily deliveries.) We also are trying to enlist the help of talk radio hosts in driving people to sign the petition.

We are requesting your assistance in:

Jobs for American Workers, NOT Illegal Aliens

Stop Pelosi, Obama and Reid from stripping workplace enforcement like they did last winter.

Send this petition to keep E-Verify, Fence and No-Match amendments in the Homeland Security Bill and open up jobs to unemployed Americans.

To: President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and Leader Reid,

Defend unemployed Americans. Keep the four E-Verify, Fence and No-Match amendments in the Homeland Security spending bill. The Senate overwhelmingly passed these amendments to ensure that returning veterans and other unemployed Americans get jobs and that illegal foreign workers not be able to take the jobs from them.

The nation's eyes are upon you; we will not tolerate the stripping of these measures in a secret conference as you did with the House E-Verify provisions this past February.

Millions of unemployed Americans are counting on you.

This is a special phone note for NumbersUSA's independent members

On July 8 and 9, the U.S. Senate considered numerous amendments to the DHS Appropriations bill, H.R. 2898. Fortunately, four positive immigration-related amendments were passed! They are:

  • The Sessions amendment to permanently reauthorize E-Verify and mandate its use by all government contractors and subcontractors;
  • The DeMint amendment to force DHS to complete the 700 miles of border fencing which has already been approved and funded;
  • The Vitter amendment to force the Social Security Administration to continue their "No-Match" program (DHS Sec. Napolitano recently ended the program); and
  • The Grassley amendment to allow all businesses that use E-Verify to run all of their current employees through the E-Verify system
The DHS Appropriations bill was passed by the Senate on July 9 and will now go to a Conference Committee comprised of Members of both the House and the Senate so that the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill can be ironed out. It is almost certain that Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker Nancy Pelosi will try to strip these provisions from the bill (Majority Leader Reid, Speaker Pelosi, and President Obama worked to remove positive E-Verify language from the February stimulus bill in Conference).

Please phone both Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and urge them to support American workers by supporting the pro-enforcement, pro-American worker amendments added to the DHS Appropriations bill by the Senate. Make it clear that you are an independent voter not associated with a political party and pulling the E-Verify provisions from the bill will make the Democratic Party look really bad in your state.

Also, be sure to send the fax to Majority Leader Reid and Speaker Pelosi that is on your Action Buffet

To all writers

(1) Please respond to this lousy column by one of the Post’s editorial writers, “Immigration's Sideshow,” The Washington Post, July 19.

Here’s what Roy says about this: “Why do elitists who apparently don't even know any unemployed Americans get to constantly show their callousness toward the 15 million jobless Americans, saying that the only real issue is not opening up illegals' jobs for Americans but making life easier for the illegal aliens."

Add to this the fact that each month the federal government continues to issue 138,000 green cards to foreign workers, most of them with little education and few skills.

Thanks!

Immigration's Sideshow

By Lee Hockstader
Sunday, July 19, 2009

The Obama administration, moving gingerly toward what the president has said will be a far-reaching overhaul of the nation's broken immigration system, is trying to show at the outset that it is serious about enforcing existing laws.

A glimpse of the president's strategy came earlier this month, when Department of Homeland Security officials said they would scrap a Bush administration initiative, tied up in the courts, that would have used Social Security information to force employers nationwide to fire millions of unauthorized workers. Instead, DHS said it would require federal contractors to use a separate government database to verify that their employees are authorized to work here. At about the same time, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the government would put new limits on local police who have been deputized by the feds to help deport undocumented immigrants.

Immigration advocacy groups scowl at such efforts to front-load enforcement before an overarching reform effort is undertaken, one that would grant legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants and expand the supply of visas for future immigrant workers. Many Republicans in Congress, meanwhile, want much tougher enforcement measures, while opposing any strategy that smacks of what they consider amnesty for illegal immigrants. They are all gearing up for a new battle as early as this fall.

The ingredients of the debate are familiar from the failed Bush-era attempts to fix immigration, including the rhetorical excess of all sides. And while the administration's early, tentative moves have been attacked from both sides, in fact they are modest and reasonable steps that may set the stage for the fight ahead.

Take the employee verification program, known as E-Verify, that the Obama administration would require for federal contractors. Business and civil liberties groups dislike it, insisting that inaccuracies in the electronic data make reliance on such systems unfair. In fact, E-Verify is surprisingly accurate. Of 1.8 million E-Verify checks on workers made by employers between October and December last year, less than 0.5 percent of the system's initial responses were reversed on review, according to an outside audit commissioned by Homeland Security. And in Arizona, where businesses initially objected to the nation's broadest law requiring employers to check new hires through E-Verify, the state Chamber of Commerce, to its surprise, now acknowledges the system is working relatively smoothly and accurately. The federal government is correct that there's nothing inherently unreasonable about requiring companies to confirm that their employees are authorized to work in this country.

Then there is the federal program to deputize local police to help deport undocumented immigrants. Advocates of immigrant rights are correct that it has led to racial profiling and deepened mistrust between police departments and immigrant communities. But the DHS move last week aims to minimize abuses by forcing police to pursue all criminal charges that prompted an arrest in the first place; that should dissuade cops from slapping handcuffs on people suspected of no more than lacking valid documents.

It is tempting to think that the nation's economic anemia has sapped the immigration debate of its urgency. Given the pain of rising unemployment, why worry about legalizing undocumented workers, let alone clearing a path for still more immigrants to cross the border on the up and up? Why not just fine-tune enforcement, as the government is doing, and leave the rest for later?

The answer is that the government's moves, even if they tend to rationalize and improve on Bush administration policies, are essentially a diversion. Ditto the ongoing efforts to reinforce personnel and fencing along the Mexican border. Any serious solution to the nation's immigration mess will have to do more than make employers toe the line or dissuade police from following their worst instincts. The fact remains that enforcement by itself is only part of the problem, and it will not magically make 12 million undocumented immigrants disappear, provide a realistic framework for future immigrants or settle a noxious debate that has raged in virtually every state legislature in the country. As Congress gets set to tackle the immigration mess, the administration will need deft politicking, and a broad strategic lens, to push for a comprehensive solution.

Sign the Petition!

Who is NumbersUSA and why are we behind this petition?

NumbersUSA Action is a non-profit, non-partisan, public policy organization that opposes efforts to use federal immigration policies to force mass U.S. population growth and to depress wages of vulnerable workers. NumbersUSA Action is pro-environment, pro-worker, pro-liberty and pro-immigrant. Activists in the NumbersUSA Action network are Americans of all races and include many immigrants and the spouses, children and parents of immigrants. Our goal is to carry out the immigration-reduction recommendations from two national commissions of the 1990s:
1) The bi-partisan U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform urged reduction in immigration numbers that are now so high as to harm the most vulnerable American workers and their families
2) To achieve an environmentally sustainable society, the President's Council on Sustainable Development urged reducing immigration numbers to a level that will allow the U.S. population to stabilize.

Thats cool........... The biggest reason besides many others is the traffic situation in this Country...Most in my profession get paid by the mile.I dont make much sitting in a traffic jam say like Chicago,Louiville or any other major city & Its getting worse & worse...Immigrants drive cars too & consume goods & that also puts more trucks on the road...Remember they import Legals at the rate of 128,000 per month or the equivalent of the population the size of Philadelphia every 2 years...Makes sense doesnt it? www.numbersusa.com/video

Bi-partisan SAVE Act would expand E-Verify, provide jobs for Americans! </TD></TR><TR><TD height=5 colSpan=2></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Representative Heath Shuler (D-NC) and Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR) are reintroducing their SAVE Act, an important, bi-partisan attempt to remedy our immigration crisis. Last session, the bill had over 160 cosponsors, but the House leadership prevented a floor vote.

The SAVE Act (Secure America with Verification and Enforcement Act) focuses on the heart of the problem-the jobs that attract illegal aliens. It would phase in a requirement for every employer to use the electronic verification system (E-Verify) on every employee. It would also increase border security and interior enforcement.

At this time of massive unemployment, we must insist that jobs are for Americans, not those who have broken into our country. As E-Verify is expanded, American workers will take those jobs, and the number of illegal aliens will be reduced through attrition. With enough outrage from the American public, we can force Congressional leadership to allow a vote on this unique effort to restructure immigration policy.

The post about Save mart supermarket in CA hiring illegals is not exactly correct. The post says some temp had "suspicious" social security numbers of employees run thru E-Verify and many came back no match, but he was told the company couldn't do anything about it. That is only true because E-Verify is only supposed to be used for new hire applications, not run against existing employees.
