How does it compare to other nations? The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an international organization with 30 member nations, issued this comparative chart:

The United States is a bit higher than average in this particular groups of nations. Notice that Ireland admitted a very high number of immigrants in 2006. That is because 2006 was the best year of Ireland’s economic boom. Since then, the boom has turned into a bust. Some of those people have now left Ireland, and the number of new arrivals has declined significantly. In terms of sheer numbers, in 2006, the United States took as many immigrants as Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Austria, France, and Australia combined.<SUP>1</SUP> Those nations have a combined population of 410 million, compared to 300 million for the United States.
Depending on where you live in the United States, it might seem that there are a lot more foreigners living here than just the 1 million per year admitted as legal permanent residents (immigrants). One also must consider temporary non-immigrant visas, also known as work visas. A Green Card allows the holder to stay here permanently, as an immigrant. But a work visa only allows a person to stay here temporarily while working. When a person comes to the United States temporarily, that person is classified as a non-immigrant.
One type of work visa is the H-1B, commonly used in the high-tech industry. The H-1B allows a maximum stay of 6 years. Another type is the H-2A temporary agricultural worker visa. When a person obtains a work visa, that person is issued an Employment Authorization Document by a U.S. government agency known as United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Below is the number of new Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) issued by the United States issued for each of the last five years. The agency that issues the EAD does so under three categories: new, replacement and renewal. The numbers below represent only the new EAD cards issued.

Work visas often last more than 1 year, so over time the number of foreign born temporarily working in the United States builds up to millions of persons. At this time, I do not have data on how many temporary work visas other nations issue compared to the United States. However, with those kinds of numbers, it would be very surprising if the United States did not compare favorably with other nations.<SUP>2</SUP>
Many argue that the procedure for obtaining a green card or work visa can be very cumbersome and time-consuming. That can and should be remedied. But over 1 million people do follow the rules each year. They enter the United States while respecting and obeying our laws.
Based on the above figures, it is clear that United States immigration law and policy admits immigrants in numbers that are consistent with the developed world. While over 1 million Green Cards per year may be too low for some, it is too high for others, particularly if you look at immigration levels prior to the advent of chain migration in the late 1960s.

The idea is to weave in the immigration stats into the dept of labor numbers as a modifier. So if they report 630,000 jobs lost in a month, it can be modified to say 450,000 jobs lost due to real cutbacks and 100,000 due to new immigrants and remaining to temporary workers. Same with other stats like per capita GDP or carbon emissions or growth in sprawl.
Of course, DHS does not report such detailed data so it can be estimated at monthly levels and then actualized once the DHS stats come out.
This will put a whole new light on the govt numbers.

I have a prediction. By reputation I have been known to see and understand things long after they have occurred, so I am at least as qualified as our government experts to make this prediction...
After a senate committee meeting in 2050 in an effort to reduce the 200 trillion dollar national debt and the 20 trillion deficit spending budget, Senator Ortega will introduce a bill stating that it is too costly to teach English in schools and to prepare all public and private documents in both Spanish and English, so English will be eliminated.
Although the Chinese and Russian caucus will object,
President Juan Smith (first anchor baby president) will sign the bill.
The minority American Party will once again claim that the President is not including them in passage of new laws.

I have a different take on whether we are admitting an appropriate number of legal immigrants. With our country's alphabet soup of immigrant classes it makes sense to look at the overall effect on population. Below is a list of projected population change from 2008 to 2050 (%) for the countries Charles listed, in the same order.

Netherlands 2

These numbers are from the Population Reference Bureau, available on the web. The number of immigrants in any particular category is not important, only the effect, and the population of the U.S. is forecast to grow more than that of any of those countries and much more than most. The Pew Research Center said last year that 82% of the population increase in the U.S. from 2005 to 2050 will be due to the immigrants who arrive during that period and the descendants of those immigrants. In the early 1960s we had 300,000 immigrants per year, almost all legal. Now we have 1.1 million legal per year and in most years 0.5 million illegals. And, part of the reason that our population is forecast to grow so rapidly is that most of our immigrants are from Latin America and have high birth rates in this country, sometimes higher than the birth rates in their native countries. Should we decrease illegal immigration? Yes. Do we admit an appropriate number of legal immigrants? No, the number is much too high.

I agree that publicizing immigration figures is a good tactic. Yesterday, I submitted a comment to a NYTimes op-ed piece about falling wages and the economy. I thought it odd that my comment did not appear among the ~500 other comments, some of which even mentioned immigration as a possible problem. I had written "138,000 H-1B visas a month, every month." Possibly this was too frightening a figure for the NYTimes to have in its comment section.
In this era of throwing around numbers in the trillions, the average American may not pay attention to legal immigrants and illegal aliens in the millions - too abstract. But - 138,000 legal immigrants a month. Hmmm. Evenly distributed around the 50 states, that's more than 20,000 jobs per state per year. Are my calculations correct? 20,000 jobs going to H-1B visa holders per state per year? Every year? That's a number the average American can get his mind around because one of those 20,000 jobs may be his or hers.
NumbersUSA Moderator: The "138,000" number is the average number of new green cards and employment authorizations the federal government issues to foreign workers every month - it is not limited to H-1B visas.
The legal cap on H-1B visas dropped from 195,000/year back to its original level of 65,000/year on October 1, 2003. However, that does not include an additional 20,000/year cap for U.S. Master's and above, or the uncapped admissions to governmental agencies and not-for-profit employers. The current total for H-1b visas is above 100,000/year or

I do not think this is BS or propaganda. It is just facts. At 1.1 mil per year, it amounts to about 1/3 of 1 percent of the total population. Smaller countries can exceed that percentage of immigrants very easily. So the article correctly states that the USA is in the same zone as other high immigrant growth countries.
What blows the numbers is the temporary workers and the illegal workers pipeline. They can stay for 10+ years and are effectively permanent.
While you might think the legal number itself is too high, the fight really is to even keep it at current numbers. Because the forces for amnesty and cheap labor want it to be unlimited - to them 1.1 mil per year is way too low.

You make it sound like a good thing that America takes in their share of legal immigrants.
How many other countries are 15 trillion dollars in debt with trillions more in deficit spending each year.
How many are borrowing money and paying interest on funds needed to pay the interest on the original loans.
What other countries spend anywhere near what we do sticking their nose into the worlds business.
Secretary Gates the other day, said we have to be involved in everything around the since when other countries do it nothing gets done. Think he is suffering from delusions of grandeur the insane theory that the USA can take care of the known world just like Ancient Rome (for a while before the fall)
I would guess that 90% of the legal alien workers and 99% of the illegals cost us tax money that we do not have.
They simply do not contribute to our society.
Personally I think our only salvation is a century or so of isolationism and protectionism.
This will give us a chance to get healthy and will allow us to straighten out our own country, with families out on the streets with no housing ,senior citizens who can not afford to live the comfortable life they deserve, our children being killed or injured in parts of the world we do not belong in.
Tens of Millions of Americans our of work with very few prospects.
Eliminating immigration for anyone who can not have a positive impact on our country and economy, needs to be considered. And those that are allowed to temporarily live and work here need to be carefully tracked to make sure they are paying their taxes, and they they leave when their time is up.
Illegals, through whatever means, they need to leave the country now. No Amnesty, No free health care, no using Americas tax payer funded resources, no more helping to sink our economy and way of life.
Nothing racist or mean spirited here. I don't care what country they come from or what their story is...illegals don't belong here and are not wanted or needed.
Legals need boundaries and limitations and if they break the law and overstay, stiff fines and jail time before they are deported.
We have given up a lot over the years to support other countries, governments, and people, and its time for a break.
We are in functional bankruptcy and immigration is just one area where we can start our 100 year recovery.

It would be surprising how much of this basic info on immigration - annual green cards, annual H1Bs, EADs, etc - is unknown to most politicians, lobbyists, investors, "journalists" let alone ordinary citizens. And it is all there nicely presented on the DHS website. If you asked them to guess how many people get green cards, most people would say anywhere between 100,000 to 10 mil.
This info is as basic and probably more important than the CPI, employment, GDP numbers that are regularly published and majorly move markets or sentiments. After all, it affects the labor supply and resource demands.
How about doing a PR on immigration stats periodically? In some sort of "Immigration Index".

This was a very informative article. I do agree with your position. It might also be illuminating to examine how many people who enter on temporary visas decide to remain when the visas expire--if those figures are available.

It frightens me too. Apparently even the Supreme Court is corrupt now.
The point is that the illegal alien knew the number didn't belong to him, regardless of who it actually belonged to. He also knew that he was buying a fake social security card.
A social security number, like most anything, always belongs to someone from cradle to grave. Either the government owns it, before it is assigned to a legal citizen, or an individual owns it after it has been assigned. Either way, using a SSN number that does not belong to you is theft.
Think of the damage it does to you when an illegal alien uses your SSN for his tax withholdings and to file his tax return. The IRS is going to want you to pay his taxes owed or even accuse you of filing multiple returns. BTW – the IRS cannot tell who it actually belongs to. You're toast! Same thing for credit cards, loans, etc. You're ruined.
We teach our children this. Do not take things that do not belong to you unless you have permission. It's stealing!!

I have noticed a disturbing trend with the Supreme Court over the last year, but particlarly in the past month. Last June, they refused to hear a lawsuit filed by a student in Kansas regarding in-state tuition for illegal aliens in that state. About a month ago, they ruled in favor of an illegal alien who, following denial of political refugee status, had been ordered deported by a lower court. And yesterday, they ruled that in order for illegal aliens to be convicted of identity theft, prosecutors and Federal agents must prove that they knowingly stole someone's SSN. I hope I am wrong, but to me this appears to indicate a court that leans toward restraining enforcement. What do you all think of this?

Steve King's H.R. 997, The English Language Unity Act of 2009 that would make English the official language of the United States. He did so on the same day his home state of Oklahoma passed an official English constitutional amendment in the Oklahoma House by a vote of 89-8! That measure will be on the ballot in Oklahoma in 2010.

The English Language Unity Act of 2009, S.991:

*Requires the federal government to communicate officially in English, including informational materials and forms.

*Creates a uniform standard for testing English proficiency in the naturalization process.

*Requires that naturalization ceremonies be conducted in English.

S.991 also nullifies Executive Order 13166, the federal mandate that requires federal fund recipients including state and local governments, to provide translations and interpreters for non-English speaking residents.

Throughout our history, Americans have expected immigrants to assimilate. But today government multilingualism threatens to destroy the 'Melting Pot' that enabled us to forge one nation out of millions of immigrants from every nation on earth.

Despite the overwhelming desires of the American people, Congress still has not acted to make English the official language of the United States.

Hunter (R-CA) has introduced a true comprehensive border enforcement bill. The Border Sovereignty and Protection Act, HR 2083, offers an inclusive package to tackle many of the challenges along the U.S.-Mexico border.

We harbor no illusions about the chances for success of this measure in the current political climate, but it is important to express your support to your elected Representative. It is another way of saying "no" to the various amnesty proposals, and it shows there is an enforcement alternative to our immigration mess.

The Border Sovereignty and Protection Act would:
  • Mandate the construction of an additional 350 miles of double-layered, reinforced pedestrian fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.
  • Require all employers to verify the immigration status of employees through the E-Verify system.
  • Increase the mandatory minimum sentence for all weapons smuggling offenses to 15 years.
  • Cut reimbursement of federal funds to state and local governments that maintain sanctuary policies.
  • Provide the Department of Homeland Security with legal authority to investigate criminal drug violations.

HOUSE BILL H.R. 1621
[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]In 1942, the United States Congress recognized the Pledge of Allegiance by making it part of our body of laws, adding it to the United States Code, Section 4 of Title 4. By doing this, the Congress prescribed certain methods for reciting and recognizing the Pledge of Allegiance in English.[/FONT]
[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]Another officially recognized national unity ritual is the singing of our National Anthem. Congress officially declared that the Star-Spangled Banner was the National Anthem of the United States under Section 301 of Title 36 of the United States Code.[/FONT]

Under Sections 1423 and 1448, it states; "to become a citizen of the United States, lawful residents must renounce allegiance to their country of origin, swear allegiance to the laws and Constitution of the United States, and demonstrate an understanding of the English language."
So, when a school chooses to conduct the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the National Anthem in Spanish, they are violating the U.S. Code or, in plain English, they are breaking the law and should be held accountable for their actions.
Georgia Congressman Paul Broun has introduced House Bill-H.R. 1621. The purpose of H.R.1621 is to withhold Federal funds from schools that permit or require the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem in any language other than English.

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
Mothers Against Illegal Aliens’ mission is to educate and inform all of America about the injustices that occur to our legal citizen children of America.
Above is the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It is clear that in order to be a citizen of the United States of America, (This means a true citizen who is eligible to vote in the United States of America which consists of 50 States – this does not include South America or Canada), you must be born or naturalized in the United States, AND subject to the jurisdiction thereof, to be a citizen under the United States Constitution.
When illegal alien women illegally enter the United States of America and have a child or children, these children are not U.S. citizens.
Most of America and Americans believe that by giving ONLY BIRTH to a child is a birthright to citizenship to this country. THIS IS NOT TRUE.
Birthright and citizenship as well the right to vote in the United States of America is granted to true citizens who are under the jurisdiction of the United States of America.
Children born to illegal alien women are under the jurisdiction of the mother’s home of origin and the mother’s native land.
The 14th Amendment has not been challenged and is the Achilles heel of the invasion into the United States of America. The motive of illegal aliens to have multiple pregnancies is to change the demographics and the political arena in our country. By considering these illegal alien babies (better known as anchor babies) as citizens is stealing the future away from every legal citizen child that has been born to legal citizens of the United States of America.
When illegal alien children are presented with the inappropriate label of ‘citizen” by way of their birth is solely, a direct violation of the 14th Amendment. Children born to a parent who is under the jurisdiction of another nation while illegally in the United States of America, is under the jurisdiction of the nation of origin of their mother. That child is NOT a citizen of the USA. That child should never be given an opportunity to VOTE. Although this is happening in the USA presently, millions of children who have been born in the USA to illegal alien parents and mothers are currently voting and changing the election and electoral votes in our country.
We must all be well informed and investigate this injustice to the future of the United States of America. This blatant disregard for the birthright to the legal citizen children of our country is being raped from our children’s heritage and this countries loyalty is being sold and given away without the permission of the legal citizen children.
Please continue to investigate this and pass this information to all your friends and family. We must all do what we can to re-educate all of the USA and hold our Congress and Senators accountable to the future of our country and the future of our children’s country.
Lastly, the last sentence of the 14th Amendment states that;
Section 5. The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Please let’s hold Congress accountable and force them to enforce our laws. Please write to all your officials and let them know that you do not want them to continue to strip our children’s votes 2 to 1 because illegal alien women are having many more children illegally in our country, more than the average American family currently, which will offset our children and their votes when they are old enough to vote.

Michelle Dallacroce, President of MAIA went to the Library of Congress and researched the 14th Amendment and the Congressional Records/Globe. She has uncovered the clear defense which, without a doubt - PROVES that Illegal Alien Infants. aka. Anchor Babies - ARE NOT citizens. Based on the first sentence in Section 1, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is…..a citizen of the United States.” In the book titled “Constitution of the United States of America, Analysis and Interpretation,” Page 1672, Par. 3, line, 5, states, “The requirement that a person be “subject to the jurisdiction thereof,” however, excludes its application to children born of diplomatic representatives of a foreign state, children born of alien enemies in hostile occupation,” or children of members of Indian tribes subject to tribal law.”

Section 5: Page 2036, Paragraph 1 of the Library of Congress’ Law Library book entitled as referenced above: “The Congress shall have the Power to enforce by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.” It is CLEAR, the 14th Amendment and the language used explicitly excluded “aliens” and their offspring, not legally within the United States - from citizenship. Our founding fathers did not have crystal ball to predict that 30 million illegal aliens from Mexico, China, Ireland and every other country would be using the birth of a child to violate the laws of the United States for sympathy and as a means to remain in the USA - and by intent and design - change the face of our nation by strong arming the American people in the name of family and child.
There can be no argument that Illegal Aliens fall in the ”alien” category which is specified in the documents pertaining to the 14th amendment - held in trust for the American people in the Library of Congress in our Nation’s Capital. The fact that our forefathers did not explicitly state that the Infants of Illegal Alien Female’s were included in this sentence, DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY ARE NOT EXCLUDED.
Aliens, NOT LEGALLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, as opposed to those who are - such as a Resident Aliens - are one in the same, regardless of whether it be for “hostile occupation” or for “designed repopulation” for hostile purposes. The bottom line is, Alien means Alien - and all Aliens not legally present in the United States - to include ILLEGAL ALIENS and the children born of Illegal Alien parents - are clearly EXCLUDED for Citizenship and Residency in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Section 5 gives Congress the “exclusive” authority to define, expand or limit the terms set forth in the 14th Amendment and its applications under our Rule of Law. In 2007, we find that the United States of America is being willfully and deliberately populated to facilitate the hostile occupation - and the Colonization of our Country by a large number of ILLEGAL ALIENS - males, females and infants and anchor babies who have - unlawfully INVADED OUR NATION.
By the Constitutional authority vested in the United States Congress under Section 5 of the 14th Amendment, MAIA, as a legitimate representative of thousands of American voices - submits for redress of grievances - and for the IMMEDIATE consideration by the Congress of the United States - a formal request for an addendum via a clarifying statement to the 14th Amendment that will, in affect, encompass every definition attributed to the words and terms associated with ALIENS who have entered, who are currently present and who will enter the Sovereign Territory of the United States of America - Illegally - and to include their offspring who were, are and will be born of Illegal Alien parents within the Sovereign boundaries of the United States of America.
Senator Howard of Michigan stated it best and with great clarity when he proffered that “….it takes a citizen to make a citizen….” The pundits of today, are living in denial - and they would have Pirates, Profiteers and Pandering Politicians change the meaning of our great foundational documents to accommodate their Marxist-Socialist vision of the American dream - and turn our Nation into another 3rd World landfill. THIS WE CANNOT ALLOW - EVER!!
The true character of a Nation requires that the People’s Representatives make no laws that abridge the rights and privileges of its citizens and that they faithfully execute their sworn duty and obligation to ensure that the Rule of Law is respected and that it remains the vanguard of our Nation. In our form of government - our elected officials must be ever mindful that we are not a democracy, where a handful reign over the majority, but rather that we are a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC from which the elected derive their authority from those that have elected them.
WE THE PEOPLE is not a literary error. It is a statement of fact!! The Founding Fathers did not limit the authority and the power of the people (see the 9th Amendment). They limited the authority and the power of those who operate the government on behalf of, and for the benefit of the People.

Anchor Babies, Away

The Constitution is simple, short and easy to read. There is no excuse for any reporter to write about it, without reading it. The latest example is an article about anchor babies in the Orlando Sentinel today (29 September) by Jim Stratton.
The article concerns a comment about anchor babies by Fred Thompson, Republican candidate for President. If you haven’t followed the illegal immigration debate, anchor babies are children born on US soil of illegal immigrant parents. The babies get citizenship. Then, the provisions for “reuniting families” kick in, and the baby assists the parents in becoming legal.
It is a serious problem. Even illegals who cannot read a word of English, are aware of the law. Mexican women who are eight months pregnant are dying every month in the deserts on the border, trying to have their child here as “an American.”
Thompson’s comment on the automatic citizenship was, “I think that law was created at another time and place for valid reasons, [and] needs to be revisited.” The reporter’s gloss on Thompson’s comment, was “Citizenship by birth has been prescribed by the Constitution since 1868 -- and upheld for 109 years by the Supreme Court....”
The reporter was either incompetent or dishonest. Here’s what the 14th Amendment to the Constitution says in its first sentence: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” That’s the legal basis for anchor babies.
Those who say anchor babies are guaranteed by the Constitution, and cannot be eliminated without an amendment, jump right over the phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” Here’s an example to explain that, applied to children.
An Australian diplomat and his wife (or her husband) are serving in the United States. She has a child, born in a US hospital. Is that child an American? Absolutely not. Under the laws of the US, a child born of a diplomatic couple is a citizen of their nation, not ours, just as the embassies themselves are defined as territory of the foreign nations, not of the US.
What is the connection between the diplomatic child and the child of an illegal alien from whatever country, though most likely from Mexico? Here’s the last sentence of the 14th Amendment, a provision which is common to many amendments: “The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.”
Based on the plain language of the Constitution, Congress is given the power in the 14th Amendment itself to pass “appropriate” legislation. Therefore, Congress could pass a law that says, “For the purpose of citizenship of them or their children, aliens who are not in the US legally, or not here for the purpose of obtaining citizenship are not subject to the jurisdiction of the US as stated in the 14th Amendment.”
Such a law would be legal, because the Constitution permits it. It would mean a child born in a Tucson, or San Diego, or Laredo hospital of Mexican parents, would be a Mexican child. The anchor baby problem would be over. No more pregnant women would die in deserts of the Southwest, trying to get to a US hospital to have their “American” child.
Contrary to what Jim Stratton asserts as fact, this Amendment ratified in 1868 provides for this very solution, if Congress chooses to solve the problem by law. His assertion that the Supreme Court has held to this result is equally ignorant. The case he refers to, but doesn’t name, concerned the child of two aliens who were in the US legally, not illegally.
I am not picking on Jim Stratton and the Orlando Sentinel. The ignorance they display on this issue is common to most of the local and national reporters who talk about anchor babies. Almost all of them assume, and state, that the problem is built into the Constitution and cannot be changed without a constitutional amendment. All of them are either dishonest, because they’ve read the Constitution, and know the legislative power is given to Congress. Or, more likely, they are merely ignorant. They haven’t read the Constitution; they assume because many other reporters have said this, it must be true. Therefore, they don’t look it up.
This is not the first instance, nor the last, of the American press being a copraphage, consuming its own output.

Let's Kill the Lottery Before It Gives Away Another 50,000 U.S. Jobs to Foreign Workers

Congress and the Administration still plan to go through with a program that every fall, in effect, takes 50,000 U.S. jobs and raffles them off to foreign workers on pure chance. Never mind that 14 million unemployed Americans are looking for a job.
If that doesn't make any sense to you, get passionate about Rep. Bob Goodlatte's SAFE for America Act (H.R. 2305). Let's kill this absurd lottery before autumn.
The Visa Lottery raffles off U.S. citizenship -- without any regard to a person's education, skills, character, family relation, humanitarian need or the impact on American workers, taxes and quality of life.
The fact is that every year the federal government raffles off greencards (and path to U.S. citizenship) to 50,000 of the millions who play the lottery.
Nearly all of those 50,000 will immediately seek a job.
Those 50,000 foreign lottery winners will either take a job from an American, or fail to find a job and become a total net consumer of taxpayer benefits and infrastructure.
Could this possibly happen if rational people were making immigration decisions?
Mainly, it happens because immigration programs are on auto-pilot, and nobody actually makes a decision.
But with H.R. 2305 we have a chance to force every Member of Congress to make a decision on whether to, in effect, raffle off 50,000 jobs to foreigners.
We are starting a faxing campaign today to push every Member of the House of Representatives to co-sponsor H.R. 2305 and protect 50,000 American workers this fall.
There is no logical reason why Congress should allow the lottery to occur this coming October.
If we raise enough public ruckus about the lottery this summer, we can make it clear that everybody who fails to co-sponsor Goodlatte's bill has actually made the decision to continue a callous, irrational program against unemployed Americans.

For those of you without the historical perspective, you may wonder why in the world the lottery was ever created. The answer is that it was the method to legalize a lot more illegal Irish aliens. The Irish ambassador and Sen. Kennedy worked to create the lottery in which a disproportionate share of the winners would be Irish. The rest of the winners were apportioned among countries that don't have a lot of immigrants in the country. The first Pres. Bush signed the lottery into law.
The pro-Irish discimination provisions have sunsetted so that all the slots now go to countries that have very little history of immigration to the U.S. Thus, the lottery has created new immigrant streams in villages and countries across the world where they didn't previously exist. All of those lottery winners are then able to start applying for their extended family, creating huge pressures among those waiting in line to come on illegally and wait while in the U.S. The lottery since 1990 has created huge hardship for Americans and American communities.
We now have around a million lottery winners in the country, plus untold numbers of their relatives because of the program. How much longer will we allow this to continue?
The lottery has always been absurd. But it is doubly so this year.
Please demand that your Representative sign H.R. 2305 or publicly state why not. Congressman Goodlatte has steadfastly led the way on this reform for years and years. We thank him for his efforts.

As an American of Irish decent...pretty clever of Kennedy.
But seriously, how crazy is this kind of legislation?!!
Why would we want, as policy, a lottery to citizenship? It makes no sense at all to me. Who knows what problem person we would get that way?
I want rational, humane, reform and reasonable requirements for immigration and citizenship that support our national interests and don't favor any one group over another, or let people go to the first of the line, or take jobs, or deplete our resources both economically and environmentally.
And are enforcable!
We are 200+ years into the development of this country and we need to recognize that we cannot have un fettered illegal and unlimited legal immigration anymore.

C. Our politicans allow 20 illegal aliens into our country to take American jobs
D. Our politicans now want to use the lottery to give another 50K jobs to foerign nationals
E. This is the height of arrogance - Our politicans pass laws that force American taxpayers to provide illegal aliens with free health care, free food stamps, free educations, etc

Oh but think of all the poor immigration lawyers overseeing paralegals who will not be able to get a fee for selling a lottery entry oh I mean application to try the process.
Hahaha. You are right that the immigration lawyers are the primary lobby for the lottery. They make a lot of money offering to help people apply for the lottery. We have recently read immigration lawyers' alerts noting that business is way down for the lawyers during the recession and that some lawyers may be having to enter another field. The lawyers will fight us on the lottery. But there really isn't much of a lobby for the lottery other than them. I don't think even open-borders religious leaders, the ACLU or the U.S. Chamber of Commerce fight for the lottery.

Officers working at the Pharr, TX, border checkpoint inspected a commercial load of carrots on Saturday, May 9, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The northbound load was in a Mexican-registered truck driven by a 41-year-old Mexican man.
Officers referred the truck for an X-ray scan, which showed an irregular trailer floor. Officers opened the trailer and found 130 packages of methamphetamine hidden within the trailer’s floor.
The driver – from Tamaulipas, Mexico – was not immediately arrested as ICE special agents “continue to investigate” the smuggling attempt, a government statement read.
“To date, this is the largest methamphetamine load intercepted at the Pharr cargo facility,” said CBP Acting Port Director David Fluty in a statement issued by the USCBT.
