Border-eye view points finger at who really is killing & degrading illegals crossing desert

By Roy Beck, Monday, June 23, 2008, 11:07 PM
picture-21.png
ARIZONA/MEXICO BORDER -- "We're seeing a lot more babies crossing through here now," Barbara Barnett told me as we sat on her patio looking out over her and her husband Roger's geologically dramatic, sprawling desert cattle ranch.
One thing that feels much clearer from this vantage point is that the increasingly risky and irresponsible behavior of illegal-alien crossers is being spurred by the politicians back in Washington who continue to undercut immigration enforcement and who promise huge rewards for those who violate immigration laws.
Rep. Price Encourages Crazy Risks By Illegals

On the eve of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee deciding whether to gut the funding of local and other effective immigration enforcement tools, I wonder if Chairman Price (D-N.C.) fully understands how his decisions affect the willingness of foreign nationals to put themselves and their families through horrific ordeals for the chance to make and spend more money.
Rep. Price is a leader in deciding funding for immigration enforcement. Yet in a news report today, he made it clear that he doesn't really believe in enforcement -- that what he really wants is to reward people who illegally enter the country with permanent residence, permanent U.S. jobs and, eventually, U.S. citizenship.
Well, I stand here in gullies near the Mexican border amidst the cast-off items of the illegal crossers getting glimpses of the people who are encouraged by Price -- and by Presidential candidates Obama and McCain -- that they will work hard to see that illegal crossers get to keep U.S. jobs if they can just make it through the desert.
"Sometimes, we disrupt a group crossing during the night and the adults will start running and just abandon their kids," Barbara said. "It's really amazing that they will do that."
Desperate Not To Miss Out On Promised Rewards

Only truly desperate people would do the things that the Barnetts see as they police their own property and watch through their increasingly sophisticated night-vision aids they have used to track the trends of illegal-alien traffic for a decade.
Once, the Barnetts say, they saw mostly young, fit men. But more and more, they also see women, children, babies, even old people and lots of fat people, many of whom have to be left behind for the Border Patrol to rescue, the Barnetts say.
The vocal champions of illegal immigration claim that the desperation is born out of terrible conditions in Mexico and beyond.
But as dysfunctional as Mexico is, the illegal aliens are not fleeing starvation or political persecution.
No, their desperation is that they fear missing out on the goodies being promised by so many of America's top politicians. And they want to get their whole families in just in case American voters come to their senses and stop re-electing so many pro-illegal-immigration leaders.
This is driven by an intense greed in the illegal crossers that causes them to take monstrous risks with their loved ones for what they believe to be excellent chances to make -- and spend -- a lot more money than they could back home.
Barbara pointed at a mountain spine running through the middle of the ranch. Behind that spine, they found a dead woman left by a group of crossers. A few days later a man called from an interior city to ask the Border Patrol if they had found his wife. Presumably he had found the job that enticed him but he had killed his wife in the process.
Both of them bore responsibility for an incredibly immoral decision they made to risk their lives just to be able to perhaps spend more money at Wal-Mart. But I place the greatest blame on those politicians who since 1996 have refused to require verification of employees at the workplace. Dry up the jobs, and people will stop crossing the desert.
The reverse is true. Refuse to pass the SAVE Act, refuse to sign the discharge petition for the SAVE Act, hamper local efforts to deter illegal settlement, talk about the need for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and you politicians will entice ever more risky behavior.

The "open borders/amnesty"

The "open borders/amnesty" immigration policy of the Bush administration has done immeasurable damage to our nation. Forty percent of all illegal aliens now domiciled in the U.S. arrived here since January, 2001. What a rotten legacy.

If illegal aliens are

If illegal aliens are crossing dangerous terrain with babies, an act creating a serious risk to the babies' health and safety, could they not be charged under state law with child abuse offenses, often felonies? Local prosecutors could do this regardless of the federal government's deriliction in enforcing immigration law since the abusive conduct would occur within their jurisdictions.
Could some of the aliens be bringing in the babies to form the basis for a later claim that the child was born in the US, and under present law a US citizen who cannot be deporeted?

Roy, I have read lots of

Roy,
I have read lots of stories like this one. I see the Democrats trying to get these issues out of the media until at least after the November election. I still believe Congress is not going to get really tough on illegal's until after the 2010 census has been taken and the results are in.
Then, you will begin to see some action out of Congress. McCain is sticking to supporting amnesty, with what he has been saying to groups, as just recently in Chicago. This is why I cannot support McCain, you just can't trust him. For now I will have to vote by a write-in. You could see some headway along the borders and in cities and towns that have stepped up enforcement towards illegal's, but with the National election and the economy these issues have taken a back seat for now. Hard to motivate people when they are trying to find more money for gas and food. As the economy improves the support on these issues will increase again.

Re: Border-eye view points finger at who really is killing & deg

Somehow, we need to punish those officials that encourage illegals to enter our country and use the facillities that are put aside for the legal American people. To me, this is treasonous for any public official to go against the majority of the American public. It is time for a Boston Tea Party on the President on down. If you don't do as the majority says, then impeach the president and vice-president and have a re-election and put someone in office that follows our laws and constitution. This type of hypocrisy has gone on way to long. Any senator, congressmen or representative that does not follow the laws and constitution should be thrown out of office with no golden parachute retirement or health care. After all, if you were to go against your employers rules, you would be gone in a heartbeat and I'm sure with today's attitude in business and government, you would be replaced by an illeagal at 1/10th of the pay. Time to take OUR country back.

Pro-Amnesty Rep. Chris Cannon Ousted in Primary

Updated Thursday, June 26, 2008, 12:41 PM

5490223.gif

Rep. Chris Cannon (R - Utah) was defeated in the Republican primary in Utah's 3rd district. While considered a staunch conservative on many issues, Rep. Cannon is known for being pro-immigration and has sponsored many bills to allow more foreign workers to enter the United States. Americans for Better Immigration gives Rep. Cannon a C grade based on his immigration voting record.

Rep. Cannon was defeated by Jason Chaffetz. Chaffetz served as chief of staff for former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman and has repeatedly derided Cannon's record on immigration.
Rep. Cannon's Immigration Record

In 2003, Rep. Cannon sponsored a bill that would have allowed states to charge illegal aliens in-state tuition -- a bill that failed. Throughout his tenure in the House, Cannon has supported numerous bills that would have allowed in thousands of foreign workers at the expense of American workers. Rep. Cannon has also been a great supporter of amnesty for illegal immigration. Americans for Better Immigration gives Cannon a F- for both his voting record on House amnesty bills and his voting record on the importation of foreign workers.

<TABLE style="WIDTH: 596px; HEIGHT: 510px" cellSpacing=4 cellPadding=4 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD> House Appropriations Committee Rejects ICE Worksite Enforcement Amendment

This morning, Rep. David Price (D-NC), Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Homeland Security, presented the FY09 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill to the House Appropriations Committee. According to Chairman Price’s earlier press release, the bill mandated that $800 million of the funds allocated to ICE be used to identify and remove criminal aliens in an effort to reprioritize ICE’s law enforcement activities. This spending requirement could restrict ICE’s ability to fund other enforcement priorities should the need arise. Additionally, the bill provided approximately $90.7 million for enforcement which is short of the President’s request of $93 million.
To counter this move, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) offered an amendment that would shift from a non-enforcement area of the bill just $2.3 million specifically to help fund ICE’s worksite enforcement efforts. Earlier today, the House Appropriations Committee rejected Rep. Kingston’s amendment in a largely partisan vote.
In support of his amendment, Rep. Kingston told the committee that:
  • <LI class=MsoNormal style="mso-list: l1 level1 lfo2; tab-stops: list .5in">Workplace enforcement is important because employment is the driving force behind illegal immigration. </STRONG>The demand for fraudulent documents made by illegal aliens creates the thriving criminal enterprises that make them.<LI class=MsoNormal style="mso-list: l1 level1 lfo2; tab-stops: list .5in">ICE’s Worksite Enforcement arm plays a key role in fighting against illegal immigration and homeland security, promotes national security, protects critical infrastructure and ensures fair labor standards. <LI class=MsoNormal style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in; mso-outline-level: 1">Worksite Enforcement Investigations focus on employers involved in criminal activity or worker exploitation, </STRONG>including:

<LI class=MsoNormal style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in">The presence of illegal aliens at a business does not necessarily mean the employer is responsible. • No industry, regardless of size, type or location, is exempt from complying with the law. These investigations often find that some of the employers are not paying a living wage, paying overtime, etc.

NumbersUSA's opinion is that letters are more likely to be published and more likely to help our cause of dramatic immigration reductions if they are written in a temperate, self-controlled way that avoids name-calling and arguments based on race, religion or national origin. A strong use of a few facts, voting records, concise analysis and sometimes humor seems the best way to advance our arguments. We encourage specific criticism of open-border politicians and others, but caution against "in your face" rhetoric. Firm but civil argument tends to get the best results. House should vote on SAVE Act measure

In 1995, Democratic Rep. Barbara Jordan, one of the first African-American women to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, advocated sound immigration reform before a Subcommittee on Immigration and Claims.

Representative Jordan stated that illegal immigration is unlawful and unacceptable. She made the "distinctions between those who obey the law, and those who violate it."

She also disagreed with those who labeled her efforts to control illegal immigration as somehow inherently anti-immigrant.

Ms. Jordan's proposal focused on four key enforcement areas: the removal of job magnets that attract illegal immigration; penalizing employers that violate U.S. immigration regulations; tighter border security, and the removal of taxpayer-funded entitlements for illegal aliens. This proposal was endorsed by President Clinton.

Today, our immigration system still remains broken due to the lack of enforcement by our federal, state and local governments.

The Pew Hispanic Research Center estimates that more than 680,000 illegal aliens cross the border every year. We are also seeing the same political posturing from special-interest groups that label those who are against illegal immigration as "racist" or "anti-immigrant."

It isn't too late to fix our immigration system.

In 2007, Rep. Heath Shuler, D-N.C., introduced the Secure America with Verification and Enforcement Act (SAVE Act). The SAVE Act is a common-sense approach that will provide tighter border security and tougher penalties against employers.

The SAVE Act has both bipartisan and the American public support. Despite having more than four-fifths of the signers needed for a vote in the U.S. House, the House leadership has resisted moving the act through the legislative process.

House members are being pressured not to sign the discharge petition and are putting special-interest groups before the American public.

It is time for our New Hampshire House leadership to step up to the plate and sign the discharge petition. It is time for both Reps. Carol Shea-Porter and Paul Hodes to listen to their constituents.

"United States must enforce immigration laws"

Open-borders advocates tell us that we are "a nation of immigrants."

In reality, America is not a nation of immigrants, as the pro-open borders groups would have us believe, but rather a nation of American citizens who are descendants of immigrants - as the citizens of most nations originally are - with a generous number of legal immigrants allowed in each year.

Immigration is not supposed to be based on emotions, but on honoring the rule of law. When our 1996 Immigrant Responsibility Act was enacted, the late congresswoman Barbara Jordan(D-Texas.) stated "it is both a right and a responsibility of a democratic society to manage immigration so that it serves the national interest."

Our government needs to enforce our present immigration laws to protect the lives and well-being of American citizens.

Overlooking 'illegal'

Re: Over the line, editorial

The Times states, "The anti-immigration furor is pushing us toward irrational policies." Is it the position of The Times that enforcing our laws is irrational?

Re "U.S.-born children feel effect of raids," June 8

When the Rangels entered the United States illegally and then had not one but four children in this country, they had to have known the following: that they were never going to get caught and deported; that if they did get caught, having American children would work in their favor regarding deportation; and that if they got caught, they could play on the sympathy for their innocent children. What else could they have been thinking?

Entering the U.S. illegally is risky, and having children while here illegally compounds that risk. So who is to blame for the children's undeniable heartache and stress? Were the American people involved in the Rangels' decision to have four children under these circumstances?

Why wouldn't The Times explore these issues?

No sympathy for man here illegally

Re: Checks strand illegal immigrants" (June 7). Was this story printed to evoke some type of sympathy for Mr. Perez? Especially interesting is his statement, "There's no gangs here, no crime, it's the kids who suffer."

I guess he doesn't consider his illegal entry into this country a crime. According to his statement, he's been in this country for some time, which means he has been afforded the opportunity to apply for amnesty under at least one of the seven amnesties that have been offered in the past years. He obviously has chosen to ignore that opportunity to "legalize" himself/family. He claims to do "odd jobs," meaning his income is more than likely "off the books" and he's not paying taxes on his income. Or, if he is using some form of documentation, it is either false or a stolen identity.

The reason his kids are "suffering" is not the fault of our government, it's his own fault for breaking our immigration laws in the first place. No sympathy from me. Just go back to your country of origin and apply for legal entry Mr. Perez. Then you'll have no reason to whine.

In response to “Enough one-sided immigration rhetoric” (June 9 editorial):

A bit more enforcement would shake up illegals

The Observer says it would like to hear what Sen. Dole “proposes to do about the estimated 12 million people in this country illegally. It's not practical to deport that many people.”

In reality, even a slight uptick in enforcement of U.S. immigration laws – they do exist – will change the calculations of prospective border jumpers and of those already residing in the U. S. illegally. No need for mass deportations.

Guest worker programs don’t work as advertised

Kay Hagan, who is challenging Sen. Elizabeth Dole, urges “reforming guest-worker programs for businesses that have trouble meeting labor needs,” says the News & Record (May 30). “Something like that could cover most illegal immigrants.”

Legalization of illegal immigrants — popularly known as “comprehensive” immigration reform — is favored by most Democrats and some Republicans.

Legislation in 1986 illustrates how the approach works. President Reagan signed a bipartisan “one-time only” amnesty for an estimated 1.5 million illegal aliens. It included promises of fines for employers and stepped-up border security.

What happened? An overwhelmed INS — under political pressure from Congress — sped through and approved 2.7 million applications, many fraudulent. Employer sanctions were forgotten over time (employers howled, congressmen listened). By 2008, 13 million to 20 million additional illegal aliens had taken up residence in the United States.

“Guest” worker programs also have a history:

“In many countries, under many types of government, and across many time periods, experiences with guest worker programs have led to an overwhelming and simple consensus among those who have studied the issue: there is nothing more permanent than temporary workers” (“The Mirage of Mexican Guest Workers,” Philip L. Martin and Michael S. Teitelbaum, Foreign Affairs Magazine, Nov./Dec. 2001).

Valley Voices: An economic fix to illegal immigration

By Marty Lich

Here is why nothing is done to curb illegal immigration. It is a case of “follow that money.”

For example:

If illegal’s children are not enrolled in our schools, the use of the free/reduced lunch programs would be reduced, thereby reducing the need for as many cooks, as well as reducing the amount of products we purchase from the United State Department of Agriculture to subsidize these programs. Do not be fooled. This is about profit, not people.

If illegal aliens were not readily available to use the grocery store subsidized food (WIC) programs, the number of governmental staff needed to make these programs function would be reduced. This is about sustaining government employment, not babies who crave Welch’s 100-percent grape juice. (One of the WIC-approved products.)

If illegals were stopped from entering America in the first place we wouldn’t have as many jail beds needed, thus reducing the number of jail employees as well as court staff currently employed to handle the number of cases on their docket. This is about job security funded by your taxes. $20 million worth in Eagle County’s case.

Ask yourselves if you have noticed various increased costs in Colorado, such as the need to purchase uninsured motorist coverage on your vehicle. That is the insurance company’s response to a high number of unlicensed, uninsured motorists and the additional fee is common in states with a high number of illegal alien drivers who are often uninsured as well. This is about insurance companies unwilling to go broke due to reimbursing their insured drivers for these uninsured driver’s damages.

Ask yourselves if you have noticed increases in your own personal health care coverage costs. That is the health insurance industry’s response to their forced payment for the nonpaying uninsured. If they did not do this, they would suffer the same fate as the airline industry.

Ask yourselves if you have noticed the governmental cry for increased road taxes while reducing our road repairs, maintenance and upgrades each year. When a motor vehicle is driven on our roads, but is not licensed in our state, they are not paying into Colorado taxes to help cover this increased traffic load and its resultant wear-caused road damage.

So who pays? We do. John Q. Public. Not Big Business, not Big Brother, just you and I, the middle-class taxpaying families.

Are the various public aid and services system in Colorado that taxpayers finance today being bankrupted? No, but they should be. If our taxes were not increased at the same time as our services are reduced our system would be defunct.

Is the solution amnesty? The answer to that is also no. For our tax burden will increase tenfold and not because of the unwillingness of the potential naturalized citizens to work. They work and they work hard. None of us could ever say they do not. But the tax burden to American citizen families will become ever greater because of the low-income and low educational status of these workers. The average immigrant household here creates a financial burden on the state and local governments of almost $9,000 per year after taxes. The use of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) among U.S. citizens is 94 percent compared to immigrants at 5.9 percent. Granting amnesty will change the immigrant status to that of a U.S. citizen, along with the citizenship-increased benefit eligibility.

Stem, through heavy taxation, the $318 billion now sent out as remittances from America each year. For every dollar sent out of our country is one less dollar spent in our country. It is just as President Bush said with regards to his $145 billion dollar taxpayer stimulus package, that this is another way to give our economy a “shot in the arm.”

Imagine what $318 billion annually would do in offering some fiscal relief to U.S. taxpayers.

There are simple solutions as well.

Besides securing our borders with intent, we need to return to an independent self-supporting nation once again. Offer no public aid to immigrants, legal or otherwise, just as we did before President Clinton’s 1996 Welfare Reform Act. Remove the birthright citizenship that was intended to protect our slaves’ American-born children, for today American citizens have no more slaves. Allow no enrollment in our tax-supported public schools unless we charge all immigrants the full costs to educate their child(ren) each year. Two things will result. These families will self-support or they will self-deport.

For money does talk, but actions speak louder than words.

Serve constituents

Rep. Barbara Lee and the entire Bay Area Democratic delegation bear responsibility for the massive illegal immigration problem we see by refusing to enforce our immigration laws.

They behave as if they were elected to represent alien trespassers instead of American citizens. Now that ICE, the agency responsible for enforcement, is finally beginning to do its job, Lee wants to sabotage its efforts and threatens to "take them on, big-time."

I have a message for Lee. There is indeed fear in the community, but it is the fear that we are turning California into an overpopulated Third World cesspool because of uncontrolled illegal immigration.

Earth to Lee: Start serving your constituents and your country instead of illegal immigrants and foreign powers.

Sending faxes to Congress about lowering immigration is the bedrock activity of this organization. Last year, you and our 650,000 other members sent more than 7 million faxes! Good going! Believe me, you're making an impact.

But the faxes you send using our unique faxing system do have one weakness common to all faxes sent using an automated, computerized system.

That is, your name is merely typed at the bottom of the fax, instead of being hand-written. Think for a moment. If you were able to send your faxes to Congress using your own fax machine, you normally would put your handwritten signature at the bottom before sending it off. Right?

Now you can hand-sign every fax you send through NumbersUSA in a very life-like, convincing manner. What you do is send us your signature, and we will use place it automatically on the bottom of every one of your future faxes--all at no cost to you!

How does this work? It's pretty easy, and has only three steps.

1) Click this link, which will open a form with some detailed instructions and a box in which you may sign your name. Print out the form you will see on any computer printer;

2) Sign your name in the box provided. Make sure your name matches the one you see printed just below the box (you will have to be logged into NumbersUSA to do this);

3) Fold the form, put it in an envelope, and then mail it to NumbersUSA at the address provided. We will take great care of your signature. Signatures will not be sent over the Internet, for example. Rather, faxes are sent to Congress over regular, secure telephone lines. </TD><TD vAlign=top align=right width=180><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=180 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=t1bluesubheader>in this email:</TD></TR><TR><TD class=t1subjectstext>Instructions on how to send in your handwritten signature for us to automatically attach to everyone of your faxes </TD></TR><TR><TD class=t1bluesubheader>actions in brief:</TD></TR><TR><TD class=t1subjectstext>Get new no-cost benefit of hand-signed faxes by following these instructions.

(Of course, if you are one of the 1,000 or so members who have already discovered this new feature, there is no need to re-send your signature!)

I urge you to take this step immediately. No other organization we know of offers hand-signed faxes to Congress. Roy says that a handwritten signature will increase the impact of a fax in a Congressional office by 10 to 20 times!

Imagine! Hundreds of computer-typed faxes are received in many Congressional offices. But your faxes will stand out because your faxes will have a handwritten signature.

Again, just press this link to get started. Your directions will be right there on that form.

Thanks for all you do,

Jim Robb
Vice President, Operations

3) All illegal aliens have 90 days to get their affairs together and leave..We'll give them a free trip home.. After 90 days the remainder will be gathered up and deported immediately, regardless of whom or where they are.. They're illegal!!! France will welcome them..
4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 days unless given a special permit!!!! No one from a terrorist nation will be allowed in.. If you don't like it there, change it yourself and don't hide here.. Asylum would never be available to anyone.. We don't need any more cab drivers or 7-11 cashiers..

5) No foreign "students" over age 21.. The older ones are the bombers.. If they don't attend classes, they get a "D" and it's back home baby.. Now, isn't that a winner of a plan?

Updated Friday, July 4, 2008, 1:13 PM

Postville%20raid.jpg

The May 12 enforcement action at the Postville, Iowa meatpacking plant yielded 389 rank-and-file arrests, but no managerial arrests until yesterday when the first supervisors were taken in custody. The New York Times reports two supervisors were charged with securing false documents for illegal aliens and a warrant was issued for the arrest of a third person, who is described as a plant manager. 270 of the illegal aliens arrested were sent to federal prison on fraudulent document charges.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!--/OUTER BOX TABLE-->JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -
Gov. Matt Blunt was signing legislation Monday that creates new restrictions on illegal immigrants and new requirements for businesses that employ them.
The governor was scheduled to make stops in Joplin and Kansas City to publicize the legislation. Lawmakers passed the bill on the final day of their annual session under a threat from Blunt that he would call a special session if no bill were passed.
Under the immigration legislation, applicants for food stamps, housing and other public benefits will need to prove they are U.S. citizens or are legally in the country; the Highway Patrol will need to seek special federal immigration training; commercial driver's license tests will be given in English with no translation assistance; and cities would risk some state aid and grants if community leaders adopt policies to not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
The Washington-based Pew Hispanic Center estimates from U.S. census data that 35,000 to 65,000 illegal immigrants live in Missouri - roughly the equivalent of the populations of Cape Girardeau or St. Charles. Missouri is projected to have less than 1 percent of the 12 million people estimated to be in the United States illegally.
The immigration bill passed the Legislature with wide majorities. Only Democrats living in and around Kansas City and St. Louis voted against the bill.
But the thorniest provision left Republican lawmakers and Missouri's business community arguing over how to address what bill supporters called "the magnet" attracting illegal immigrants to Missouri - the prospect of a job from an employer who does not care whether the applicant is legally in the country.
Under the legislation, all public employers, including state and local governments, will need to use a federal database that searches records from the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to determine whether someone is authorized to work in the country.
So will businesses that have a government contract worth more than $5,000 or that receive state loans or tax breaks. But private employers won't have to use the E-Verify system unless they are caught hiring an illegal immigrant.
Lawmakers initially sought to require everyone to use E-Verify, but business leaders balked, pointing to database errors and uncertainty about the system's future. They accused lawmakers of trying to turn the state's employers into immigration agents.
About a dozen states require that some employers use E-Verify, with Arizona and Mississippi going the furthest in mandating it for all. Illinois has gone the opposite direction, limiting how E-Verify can be used until database errors can be corrected.
The E-Verify system was created in 1996 to give employers an electronic way to determine whether employees can work in the United States. But misspelled names, last names entered as middle names and outdated information have led to mistakes.
The Government Accountability Office reported to Congress last month that about 92 percent of all E-Verify checks are confirmed within seconds. About 7 percent cannot be immediately confirmed by the Social Security databases and about 1 percent can't be confirmed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
As of April 2008, 61,000 employers nationwide were registered for E-Verify, with the roughly 28,000 active users making more than 2 million queries from October 2007 to April 2008. The GAO reported it would cost more than $1 billion to update the system for the estimated 63 million annual queries that would come from making E-Verify mandatory nationwide.
Besides deciding whether to require employers to use the federal database, Missouri lawmakers also battled over whether to punish employers who misclassify their workers as contractors. For contractors, employers don't have to pay withholding taxes, provide other benefits or take responsibility if the worker is an illegal immigrant.
The immigration bill allows fines of up to $50,000, for businesses that misclassify workers and have at least five employees performing public works.
