$3,000 in straight tris doesn't sound right. How big is the pool on one harness race ?
Wouldn't it pay far less ?

CASE AT A GLANCE
Sacramento Harness Association officials started an immediate investigation into the first race May 5 at Cal Expo after they became alarmed by an unusually low trifecta payout. The $3,000 claiming event was won by 6-1 shot Green Fields, who had won one of 17 prior starts at the meet with average odds of 28.5-1. Driver Jason Maier, who also owned the winner, went to the lead immediately with Green Fields and finished first by nine lengths with even-money favorite Wovoca second and Mow Em Down -- the longest shot in the seven-horse field at 28-1 -- third. The $1 trifecta -- which requires bettors to correctly pick the first three finishers in order -- paid $79.50. An average payoff for that combination would be $238. On May 12, the SHA suspended four drivers in connection with the case. Those suspensions were lifted in September, but the state's investigation continued.

[FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]A former Cal Expo driver who had been working in New York was arrested Friday in connection with possible race fixing at the Sacramento harness track.
Daniel R. Maier, 22, was taken into custody Friday afternoon at Monticello Raceway in the Catskills region of New York, said Maggy Krell, deputy state attorney for California. Maier faces extradition to California.
Awaiting Maier in Sacramento Superior Court are three charges: conspiracy to commit grand theft, grand theft and bribery to affect the outcome of a horse race.
"It's the first such case to be prosecuted in California," Krell said of the bribery charge.
Maier's arrest followed the Dec. 19 conviction of driver-trainer Raymond Burt, who pleaded guilty to "accepting a bribe not to use his best effort," Krell said. Burt is due to be sentenced Jan. 22 in Sacramento Superior Court.
The latest arrest follows a seven-month investigation into the outcome of a May 5 race at Cal Expo. The $3,000 claiming event was won by Green Fields, driven and owned by Jason Maier, Daniel's brother. Burt's horse, Omen, finished fourth. Daniel Maier did not drive in the race.
The investigation continues, and other arrests are possible, Krell said.
Daniel Maier, a former Rio Linda resident, had won 31 races and almost $133,000 in a driving career that started at Cal Expo in 2002. Last year, Maier won 13 of 80 starts, mostly at Cal Expo, before he relocated to New York in September. He drove Thursday at Monticello, finishing last in the third race.
