The crockpot is a blessing for lazy guys like me who don't have the time or desire to cook dinner every night. Back when I was single I used to go to the store every sunday and get some beef, carrots, onions, celery, peas, corn, chili peppers, and vegetable broth - toss it all in there, leave it on over night, then dump it all into 5 tupperware containers. Easy livin, and healthy too.

But back to the present - yesterday started off the war on fat with 3 small victories. The wife and I are testing out "The Rice Diet", supposedly works wonders to not only curb your appetite, but also cleans your body and get you on the right track. It's not all rice, but in the beginning it's pretty boring starches, fruits and vegetables. For breakfast I had Total Whole Grain cereal with a cup of milk, and 2 cups of fruit. I felt like I was on a commercial it was so healthy. Then for lunch and dinner I had 2 cups of brown rice with a little bit of lemon for flavor, and 1 cup of mixed fruit. Now you're probably thinking, jeez man, you're going to burn yourself out with so little food!! That's what I thought too, but to be honest, I wasn't hungry at all. The book says to remove all the processed sugars and extra sodium (salt) from your diet, because those things really get your appetite going. It seems like they're right.

As for the exercise portion, I didn't want to overdo it during this initial bare bones eating period, so instaid of getting a ride home from work I took the shoeleather express. It's only about a mile, but it's straight uphill, and a little fresh air after sitting 10 hours in this chair at work do good for the sanity.

Hopped on the scale this morning, and it read off 268. I know it's not realistic to think I really lost 2 pounds in one day, but it made me feel confident that I'm heading in the right direction. Had a slice of toast this morning with a little bit of honey, a cup of non-fat yogert, and a cup of fruit. I'm ready to attack this day, just like the last, and just like the next.

ivy,i didnt know, that sodium would mess with your appetite like that, but after thinkin about it for a minute,.it makes sense..i can tell a difference, when i eat foods with too much sodium...im thinkin abou makin my own soup, and puttin it in plastic bags and freezin it...if you eat clean for a while, your body becomes ultra sensitive to any kind of crap you try and sneak by it.....dont know anything about the rice thing, but it sounds like youve got it figured out..i like your 'war on fat'attitude.....youve got to have an attitude,to change long term behaviors.....on the scale thing..i allow for a 3 pound fluctuation, and always weigh myself, when i get in from walkin......itll be interestin to see how you do with the rice.......just remember, were all in this together, and old hognuts is pullin for ye.....'keep the continue'

Two things are for certain: First, Hognuts is always going to wake up before I do. And Second, we're both kicking fat's ass.

Yesterday was another landslide victory in the war on fat. 3 great meals to flush out my prior unhealthy, greasy, fast food, pizza filled system. Started with some new cereal, Kashi, and some strawberries. That stuff isn't half bad, it's like granola or trail mix. Then for lunch the wife was working late so she couldn't make it in with my meal, so I had to think fast and went next door to get myself a fresh baked whole wheat bagel with one of those little diner sized packets of strawberry jam. Walked home from work, then for dinner I had myself a full plate, including 2 cups of brown rice, 2 cups of carrots, and 1 cup of fruit. Shook a little lemon on the rice, but I got the good idea to switch it to hot sauce next time. Looking forward to that.

Can you believe it? I just said I'm looking forward to rice with hot sauce. A week ago I would have called myself crazy and ordered up a large pepperoni pizza. Taking it back to basic grains, ripe fruits, and fresh vegetables really makes you enjoy every flavor and spice. After this initial weight loss period is over (2-3 weeks), I can't wait to start experimenting with healthy new meals -- mix in some chicken with the rice, add some more spices, maybe even try out some of those healthy fish I never wanted before. I hear salmon is good, that one might be first on the list.

Anyway, after dinner it was still only 6pm, so I figured plenty of time to go outside for some exercise. Slapped on the Ipod, set it to some Counting Crows, and walked on down to the nearby college campus about a mile away. The forest in KY might be nice, but I prefer the natural beauty of some college girls to keep me motivated! After about 2 miles I doubled back and planned to run a few sprints at the track. Unfortunately there was a huge soccer camp going on so I couldn't use the track, so I decided to jog the rest of the way home. I started to get tired after about a mile, but I thought to myself WhatWouldHognutsDo, and I kept on truckin the final stretch. Take that, fat.

Hopped on the scale again this morning, fresh out of the shower, feeling good, and it read off 265.4, another 1.6 pounds down, never to return if I can help it.

ivy,the 'forest'where i sometimes walk,is actually, berea colleges cross country trainin facility, annnd, its right behind the soccer field, thats where the guys annnd GALS,train for all their sports...the view from here aint bad..havent had any kashi in about a year, but that is some good cereal..i like that 'earthy' type of stuff.........i dont want to disappoint you,but you are in what i call the 'honeymoon' stage....because youve stopped ingesting all that sugar and salt, your body will lose a lot of water, for a couple weeks, but it'll level off.. ivy,the only reason im sayin this,is because it is devastating to wake up,expectin the scale to continue on its downward spiral, and you have gained 2 fkn pounds...but then again,if you can continue to eat no more than you are,you might not have that problem...when i first started walkin,it made me so damd hungry,i would come in and want to eat everything in the house,i think my body has finally adjusted, but it sure took long enough.....to change our lifestyle,we must exercise, and for me,i enjoy the heck out of walkin..buuut,from what ive learned, what we eat(or what we dont eat)is much more important than exercise...im aware of all the benefits of exercise, but im talkin about gettin rid of the fat.....hopefully,you didnt eat as much as i did,and wont have the same problem adjusting....lookin back,i really made it hard on myself...to say that i did not create a calorie deficit is puttin it mildly..the only thing that saved my ass,was that i enjoyed walkin......next time youre tryin to decide whether to walk or drive, and you just cant make up your mind, remember this..a spectator never won a race....hang in there..we're all in this together....'keep the continue'

You're absolutely right Hog, and I realize this is just the tip of the iceburg in the war on fat. In the beginning of all battles you can pick off the easy victories first, but it's not for months that you can storm the castle and conquer the country. The easy pounds come off first, then it's a real "gut check" to hang in there and lose the rest.

I hopped on the scale again this morning and it was down to 263.2 - down 7 pounds in just 3 full days of dieting and moderate exercise. I attribute that to completely eliminating all unhealthy food and drink cold turkey. No sodas, pizza, candy, cheeseburgers, nothing. I haven't had anything but whole grain starches, yogert, fruits, and vegetables the past 3 days, and to be honest my energy level is UP from where it used to be. Good news is, I've been drinking water like crazy. Probably 8-10 bottles a day to keep myself hydrated and full. They say a lot of times when you feel hungry you are really thirsty, so I think drinking a lot even helps to suppress the appetite.

The biggest challenge is here at work -- they keep a refridgerator stocked full of Pepsi, and there's always cookies, bags of chips, and other snacks hangin around. It's been TOUGH not to take advantage of the free stuff, but I got a war to win, and that stuff isnt gonna get me there.

I bet if I stopped right now I'd hit 270 again within another 3 days, but that's not gonna happen. 23 more pounds to go, and 5 months to do it. It's time to make some more progress, one day at a time.

hehehe..ivy,i still cant keep peanut butter,or icecream,in my house..the only time i can have it,is when i go out....buuut,after a period of time, when your taste buds get accustomed to real foods, itll be a lot easier...i look at it like this..if i plan on eating somethin,no matter what it is,im still in control..buuut,if i eat food that i didnt plan on,the food is in control......nothlin was more devastating, than to give in,and eat a shitload of stuff, that was killin me....im happy to say,,i now crave apples and peaches.....buuut,if i went to the store, and brought home a jar of peanut butter, and a half gallon of icecream, there is not a doubt in my mind, that tomorrow mornin,id wake up very disappointed in myself.....while admitting that is embarrassin,it aint nearly as embarrassin,as weighin 295 pounds....'keep the continue'

went to the soccer field, after several light days in a row, felt it was time to get busy...jogged 3 miles, walked a half mile, then jogged, walked, and crawled, for another half mile,in,57:57...one of my most important, long term workout goals,is to be able to do 4 miles in less than an hour, every day,or at least, every other day.......i left it all on the field...i didnt even do a cooldown mile, just walked around in a circle, for a few minutes......you can believe this, tomorrow will be a light day,hehehe....'keep the continue'

I like this thought process, and I like it a lot! I just had my lunch - 2 cups of whole wheat pasta, 1 cup mixed vegetables, 1 cup mixed fruit. And now that I'm done, I couldn't care less about that greasy pizza sitting in the conference room. I didn't have any, and I won't. Sticking to the plan.

One of these weekends I'm sure the wife and I will treat ourselves to a nice dinner off the rice system, and man am I looking forward to it. But for now, one more victory for the good guys. This fat must be getting nervous, watching 7 of its soldiers go down, and no more reinforcements coming in.

Another successful day in the war on fat. Had some Kashi with yogurt and fruit for breakfast. Then whole wheat pasta, mixed frozen vegetables, and mixed fruit for lunch, and the same thing for dinner. They tried real hard to corrupt me at work, bringing in 2 pepperoni pizzas, then having an ice cream sunday party for some guy who passed a test. I held strong, didn't have anything but water. I could hear my stomach crying a little bit, but it'll take more than that to beat me.

After work I had a baseball game to go to, I play in an amateur league (very amateur), usually have games twice a week or so. Played a solid 6 innings at first base, went 2-2 at the plate with a walk, and we won 11-1. Felt good to get out there and get the blood flowing a bit.

Down to 262.8 this morning, looks like the easy weight is done, gonna be a real battle from here on out! Walked to work this morning at 8am, maan was it hot and humid out. Only took 25 minutes to get there, but my shirt was pretty wet already. Good thing we have cold AC here in the office, or I'd be in trouble the rest of the day!

had company all mornin...changd course again today..as ive stated before, ive got a dirt driveway, that goes down to my mailbox, and its almost straight uphill..it takes me 2 minutes goin down, and 3 minutes comin back up it..the only reason i havent utilized it more,is because i could only do a few rounds, and i felt that in order to lose this fat,i needed a route i could sustain, for at least 45 or 50 minutes, sooo,i had to drive to town, etc etc...well,im in much better shape now and I CAN KICK THAT LITTLE GIRLIEMAN LOOKIN HILLS ASS!!...did 5 rounds before beakfast, and im gettin ready to do 5 more...i figure 10 rounds(50 minutes,30 of it uphill)would be a good workout, probably more difficult, and intense, than any place i could drive to...........what i like most about it is,if i need a break,i just step into my garage, and hit the recliner......an excellent cardio event, for days that i dont want to drive,or when its rainin..annnd,i can never have an excuse..OUCH....'keep the continue'.
