Thursday’s 6-pack
Odds to win the PGA’s Honda Classic this week:
12-1— Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood
14-1— Rickie Fowler
25-1— Holland, Oosthuizen, Rose, Woodland
30-1— Daniel Berger, Billy Horschel, Sungjae Im
40-1— Shane Lowry
50-1— Joaquin Niemann, Erik Van Rooyen

Quote of the Day:
“I’m disappointed in our group. I didn’t think we came the way we should and the way we’ve practiced. We show our youth so much…. This is our 28th game. You’d hope that we’d be older by now, but we were not tonight.”
Mike Krzyzewski, after Duke lost to Wake Forest Tuesday

Thursday’s quiz
Where did ABA/NBA great Julius Erving play his college basketball?

Wednesday’s quiz
The great comedian Bill Murray has a son who is an assistant basketball coach at Louisville.

Tuesday’s quiz
New Orleans Saints have gone the longest since drafting a QB in the first round; they took Archie Manning in the first round of the 1971 draft.

*****************************************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Maryland 74, Minnesota 73— Terps have won 10 of their last 11 games; they were down 16 at halftime in this game. Maryland outscored Minnesota 5-0 over final 0:31. Terps led this game for all of 0:24, but they were the right 0:24.

Richard Pitino has been Minnesota’s coach for seven years; they’re 125-106 under Pitino, but only 47-80 in conference games, 1-2 in NCAA tourney games.

If Minnesota/Pitino part ways, the Gophers have to hire Louisville assistant Luke Murray, just so his father, the great comedian Bill Murray, would finally have to root for the Gophers.

12) I think ESPN’s work has mostly gone downhill the last several years, but one thing that remains a quality product is when Scott Van Pelt does the late SportsCenter; his “Bad Beats” segment is an one, especially if you enjoy handicapping.

Couple of years ago, I’m waiting for a friend to finish work at a sportsbook in Las Vegas; it is just before midnight on Christmas Eve, so there were maybe ten of us scattered about sitting there, watching the late SportsCenter, when Bad Beats came on.

When you’re sitting by yourself in a casino on Christmas Eve, it ain’t exactly the highlight of the social season, but the next few minutes were filled with laughter and a few groans as Van Pelt went over some agonizing wagering losses from the past few days. One guy starting yelling about the coach who cost him one big wager; his buddies laughed at him. Good stuff.

11) Arkansas 86, Tennessee 69— Razorbacks have Isaiah Joe back in lineup; they went 0-5 when he was out hurt. Joe scored 22 in this game, going 12-12 on foul line.

10) Penn State 65, Rutgers 64— Nittany Lions blew a 21-point lead, then won the game on a 3-pointer with 0:28 left. PSU was only 14-22 on foul line; Rutgers was 6-11. Scarlet Knights lost six of their last eight games, look like they’re headed to the NIT.

9) South Carolina 94, Georgia 90 OT— I once walked past Gamecocks’ coach Frank Martin at an AAU tournament in Florida; the guy looks like he has a set of NFL shoulder pads under his skin, he is that big. Very large, strong-looking person.

During games, Martin has a scowl that makes me straighten up in my chair sitting at home in my living room. I would not want Frank Martin to be mad at me. Ever.

South Carolina won this game, despite going 23-37 on foul line, which made Martin frown a few times; Gamecocks are 9-4 in their last 13 games- they can see the bubble from where they are, but they’re not quite there yet.

8) Much like the swallows returning to Capistrano each spring, Giancarlos Stanton is hurt again, and will likely miss Opening Day. He has a calf strain now. Oy.

Stanton is making $26M this year; he played in 18 games LY. He’s played in 130+ games four times in his 10-year major league career.

Does he train properly? Does he lift weights too much? One of the great abilities is availability, and Stanton is unavailable way too often.

7) Upsets:
— Binghamton (+9) 76, UMBC 74
— Hartford (+7.5) 65, Stony Brook 54
— UMass (+5.5) 60, VCU 52
— Lehigh (+5) 57, Boston U 55
— Duquesne (+4.5) 81, St Bonaventure 77 OT
— Furman (+4.5) 81, NC-Greensboro 67

6) Florida 81, LSU 66— Florida’s coach is Mike White, whose dad is the AD at Duke. White’s family moved around a lot when he was a kid, as his dad kept getting better jobs. They said on this broadcast that when he was a kid, Mike White lived in 14 different states!!!!

I’ve lived in four houses/apartments my whole life, all within 20 miles of each other.

5) UNLV 76, Boise State 66— Rebels are hot, winning last four games, including giving San Diego State its only loss of the season. You watch UNLV play; their players are moving well without the ball, creating easy baskets. A much improved team that is now in 4th place in the Mountain West.

By the way, they moved the Mountain West tournament up a week this year; it is next week, possibly to avoid competition with the Pac-12 tournament at T-Mobile Arena.

4) Furman 81, NC-Greensboro 67— Road team won both series games this year; these teams are likely to meet again, in SoCon semi-finals. SoCon is an underrated league that needs more TV time.

3) Cavaliers 108, 76ers 94— Joel Embiid (shoulder) left this game early; with Ben Simmons already out, going to be.a rough few weeks for the Sixers if Embiid’s injury is serious.

2) One sportsbook posted an over/under of 83.5 for Astros hitters getting drilled by pitches this season; in their first five spring training games, seven Houston batters were plunked.

Take the over.

1) Mets have a minor league OF named David Thompson who wears #44; am wondering if #44 has anything to do with the great college basketball player David Thompson, who wore #44 when NC State won the college hoop national title in 1974.

Thompson wore #33 as a pro in the ABA/NBA for the Denver Nuggets.

NBA knowledge for a Friday night:
— Minnesota is 3-7 ATS in its last ten road games.
— Atlanta is 1-4-1 ATS in its last six games.

Quote of the Day:
“Penny has lost two of his three best players for huge, huge, huge chunks of the season and they’re still gonna win 20 games. But it’s Memphis; people just see that they lost. Nobody actually reads between the lines, sees the mitigating factors.”
An opposing coach, talking about Memphis Tigers

Friday’s quiz
When was last time Duke won the ACC’s regular season basketball title?

Thursday’s quiz
ABA/NBA great Julius Erving played college basketball at UMass.

Wednesday’s quiz
The great comedian Bill Murray has a son who is an assistant basketball coach at Louisville.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

13) Most important part of the NFL Combine are the interviews teams do with prospective draft picks. The running and workouts and measurements have their value, but game tape means more than any workout ever will. Workouts can trick people into making draft mistakes.

That said, Arizona State punter Michael Turk beat all 33 WR’s and all the tight ends but one in weightlifting Thursday at the Combine. Very, very unusual.

12) USC 57, Arizona 48— Our Bill Walton non-basketball facts of the night:
— Thursday was the great writer John Steinbeck’s birthday.
— USC has more graduate students than non-graduate students.
— USC’s campus is 226 acres, smallest campus in the Pac-12.

11) Purdue 57, Indiana 49— This was an awful game to watch, tons of effort, no offense, but the most interesting thing here was Hoosiers coach Archie Miller having a VERY animated talk with assistant coach Bruiser Flint on the bench, during the game.

Rough night for the Miller family, with neither Arizona/Indiana scoring 50 points.

Indiana is only 8-9 in conference and they got swept by their rival here, but it is very unusual to see coaches jawing at each other during a game.

10) North Dakota State 71, South Dakota State 69 OT— These teams are now tied for first place in Summit League, clearly best teams in league; league tournament is at a neutral site, so not a huge deal, but sharing the regular season title means something.

9) Wichita State 72, Temple 69— Shockers ended game on a 14-4 run, giving coach Marshall a win on his 57th birthday; they’re 21-7 and a bubble team.

8) Wisconsin 81, Michigan 74— Badgers won five of seven games since starting G Kobe King quit the team; there is such a thing as addition by subtraction. Badgers scored 76.3 ppg in their last three games.

7) California 76, Colorado 62— Red flag for a veteran team like Colorado, getting squashed on the road by a scrappy but sub-par Cal squad.

6) Upsets:
— California (+9) 76, Colorado 62
— Towson (+7.5) 76, Hofstra 65
— Cleveland State (+7) 70, Milwaukee 68
— Wisconsin (+6.5) 81, Michigan 74
— SIU-Edwardsville (+5) 90, Tenn-Martin 75

Some notes on NBA teams playing back/back nights:
5) Best teams ATS when playing for 2nd night in a row:
Thunder 8-0, Bucks 7-1, Lakers/Wizards 6-1

4) Worst teams ATS when playing for 2nd night in a row:
Pistons 2-8, Hawks 2-7-1, Wolves 1-5-1, Knicks 1-5-2, Pacers 1-4-1

3) Milwaukee is 7-1 ATS if they played the night before, but they won all eight games; their only non-cover was a 137-129 (-14) win over Portland November 29.

2) New Orleans hasn’t had any back/backs since Zion Williamson started playing; am curious how they’ll handle that when they play next Tuesday/Wednesday.

1) League-wide, road dogs who played at home the night before are 27-21-2 ATS.

NEW YORK RANGERS AT PHILADELPHIA FLYERS
GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER

Friday gives us a matchup that pits the two best teams in the East over the last 10 games as the New York Rangers travel to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers. The Rangers are big underdogs on the backend of a back-to-back even though they have ripped off nine straight wins on the road while the Flyers have won seven of their last eight on home ice.

Since February 10, both teams sit in the top-5 in goals for as each team is potting more than 3.6 per contest. The Flyers are 5-0-2 O/U in their last seven while the Rangers are 4-2 O/U on the road in their last six. These teams will face each other again on Sunday and we like a loose game in the first set before tightening up in Game 2. We are taking the Over 6 to start the weekend.

COLORADO AVALANCHE AT NASHVILLE PREDATORS
STONEWALLING AVALANCHE

The Colorado Avalanche have really shut things down defensively over their last five games as they have allowed a league-low eight goals. Goalie Pavel Francouz has stepped up in a big way since Philipp Grubauer hit the shelf winning four straight starts and giving up just four goals.

Although Nashville’s 2.63 goals against over the last two weeks isn’t on the level as Colorado’s 1.75 per game, the Predators’ goals against is still top-10 and Pekka Rinne sits in the top-10 in high danger save percentage, scoring chance save percentage and expected goals against. They are also 1-4 O/U in their last five and 2-6-1 O/U in their last nine at home. We are grabbing the bet that takes years off your life and grabbing the Under 6 on Saturday night.

DETROIT RED WINGS AT OTTAWA SENATORS
NOBODY IS WORSE AT SCORING

The two worst teams in the East will square off on Saturday as the Ottawa Senators and the Detroit Red Wings will have their fourth meeting of the year. Ottawa is in the middle of a ridiculous schedule as the Saturday tilt will be its 12th game in 19 days.

The Senators have taken two of the three matchups this season with the Over hitting in both the Senators' wins and the Under cashing on Detroit’s 3-2 shootout win back in January. Both teams were very active at the trade deadline and shipped off big pieces of their core group. Detroit is 1-7-2 O/U in its last 10 while the Sens have also struggled to put up points averaging just 2.15 goals per game — the second-lowest mark next to Detroit at 1.46. We are continuing the total train this weekend (sorry moneyline guys and gals) and hitting the Under 5.5 on the league’s worst offenses who are even more shorthanded than usual.

CALGARY FLAMES AT FLORIDA PANTHERS
THE OVER IS GOING UP IN FLAMES

The Florida Panthers have the best home O/U records in the league at 19-8-3 while also going 6-2 O/U in their last eight. The Cats are a middle-of-the-pack team in expected goals for in February but are dead last in expected goals against. That could spell trouble on Sunday when the playoff-hopeful Panthers face February’s hottest offense in the Calgary Flames.

Calgary is averaging a healthy 4.63 goals for over the last three weeks and has the most goals at 5-on-5 — it also has the most goals against at 5-on-5. All this points to a profitable Over team as Calgary is 12-2-1 O/U in its last 15 games. The market really hasn’t adjusted to this as the Flames have seen a total of 6.5 just twice across their Over stretch. We are finishing the week off cheering for goals and taking the Over 6 (and up to 6.5) on this Sunday 4 PM ET matchup.

GOALIE PROFILE: ANTTI RAANTA, ARIZONA COYOTES

Playing hockey in the desert will never make you a household name. We love hockey but would still be in tough to name 10 players on the Arizona Coyotes. Although the Yotes’ playoff hopes are dwindling, the blame game shall not be passed to their goalie Antti Raanta. The 30-year-old Finn has a .921 save percentage in 32 games this year and has been the de facto No. 1 with Darcy Kuemper on the shelf.

In his nine starts this month, Raanta has picked up five wins and allowed two goals or fewer in six of them. The Under has also been profitable on the netminder as Arizona is 2-7 O/U in February when Raanta starts. Feel comfortable riding the Under with the Coyotes as they play Buffalo on Saturday.

INJURY UPDATE: JAKE MUZZIN, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

The Leafs are down three of their top-6 defenders as the recently re-signed Jake Muzzin will miss the next four weeks with a broken hand after blocking a shot earlier in the week. This leaves Tyson Barrie as the No. 1 defenseman and the former Avalanche has more games played in the NHL than the remaining five Maple Leafs blueliners combined.

Toronto will be starting 19-year-old Rasmus Sandin and a 20-year-old Timothy Liljegren for a good stretch of the remaining games this year. Things could get even uglier for the Leafs who are seemingly addicted to inconsistency as they averaged north of three goals against a game with Muzzin in the lineup and could be in for some more typical-Toronto defensive lapses with such a young D-core.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• People say playing on the road has changed over the years as dressing rooms, accommodations and transportation have all been upgraded. These people may be on to something. On the year, away teams have won 47 percent of games. That number jumps to 48 percent over the last two months and 51 percent in the last month. Don’t be swayed too much and take the value that comes with riding an away team.

• First-period moneylines are a fun a quick bet. Straight ML bets can push if the score is tied after one period and if you play the -0.5, some big bucks can be won. Since the beginning of 2020, the Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames, New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues are the league’s best at scoring first-period goals while the Winnipeg Jets, Vegas Golden Knights, Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers are the league’s worst at keeping pucks out of the net in the first period.

• The Vancouver Canucks lead the league this month in penalty minutes per game at a robust 13.43 per match. That is nearly four-full minutes more than the fifth-highest team. Coincidentally, the Canucks also have the league’s second-best powerplay in February at a 29 percent success rate.

Saturday’s 6-pack
NBA knowledge for a Saturday night:
— Chicago lost five in row, 11 of last 13 road games (3-9-1 ATS).
— Nets are 1-4-1 ATS on road if they played night before.
— Atlanta is 2-8 ATS if it played night before, 1-4 if they covered.
— Cleveland won/covered its last three home games.
— Lakers won last seven games, covering five of last six.
— Golden State covered twice in its last seven games.

Quote of the Day:
“I was super excited to be back behind the home plate. I feel great. I feel good. I wasn’t nervous.”
Royals’ C Salvador Perez, who missed last year with an injury

Saturday’s quiz
When Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford played high school football in Texas, which current major league baseball star was the center on Stafford’s team?

Friday’s quiz
Duke last won the ACC’s regular season basketball title in 2010, when they tied Maryland; their last outright regular season title was in 2006.

Thursday’s quiz
ABA/NBA great Julius Erving played college basketball at UMass.

********************************************************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

13) Tony Romo banks $17M a year to stay as a football analyst at CBS. He is very, very good as a game analyst, better than he was as a quarterback.

12) Texas State 87, Tex-Arlington 85, 3 OT’s— Great game on ESPN2; teams combined to go 10-42 on the arc, but they both fought like hell. Bobcats won 5th game in a row, they figure to finish as the #2 seed in Sun Belt tourney, which means a bye into the tourney semi-finals.

I’ve said this before; when ESPN first started 40 years ago, Sun Belt was one of the first leagues to give them games to broadcast. ESPN should have some loyalty and give Sun Belt a regular slot in their game schedule, not just ESPN+. This game was fun to watch,

11) Dayton 82, Davidson 67— Last year, Dayton star Obi Toppin was the first freshman named to the A-14 first-team in 20 years, since a guy at Rhode Island named Lamar Odom.

10) Yale 76, Penn 73— Bulldogs were down by 10 with 1:43 left, outscored Penn 13-0 the rest of the way to send their fans home happy.

Yale stays a game ahead of Harvard/Princeton in Ivy League; they host the Tigers tonight.

9) Wright State 64, Northern Kentucky 62— Raiders clinch regular season title in the Horizon League. Hard to tell how good they are; they’ve played schedule #332 this year, very weak.

8) NC State is on the bubble for the NCAA tournament, with a 17-11 record, 8-9 in ACC games; if they don’t make the tournament, they can look at their two games with North Carolina.

Tar Heels are terrible this year, in last place in the ACC, but they beat NC State twice this year; in between those two wins, North Carolina went 0-7.

7) Solid move by the San Diego Padres, going back to brown/gold uniforms.

6) Arizona Cardinals will give up a home game this fall and play a game in Mexico, against an unnamed opponent. Dolphins are giving up a home game, will play in London.

If you want to host Super Bowls, which is a financial bonanza, then you have to go out of the country and play games now and then, thats part of the deal.

5) During the Arizona-USC game Thursday night, they had one of ESPN’s NBA experts on for a couple segments, because all ESPN does now is relentlessly promote the NBA/NFL. But this guy said something that every young athlete should pay attention to…….

NBA teams monitor the social media accounts of prospects, searching for red flags. This likely goes for many lines of work, where being an imbecile on social media can cost you a job, or a promotion. Be careful what you post, it can haunt you.

4) MLB made umpire Kerwin Danley a crew chief this season, which is amusing, because Danley is a lousy umpire. He is a walking advertisement for people who want robot umpires, and I’m not one of those, but I’d rather have Chuckles the Clown umpire an A’s game than Danley.

3) San Francisco Giants have 40 pitchers, seven catchers in camp; in other words, they’re scrambling to put together a representative roster.

2) Red Sox P Chris Sale (pneumonia) will miss the start of the baseball season.

1) Today is February 29, undoubtedly the worst day to have a birthday, since you only have your birthday once every four years. If your birthday is today, when do you celebrate it the other three years? March 1? Feb 28? The closest weekend?

Sunday’s 6-pack
NBA knowledge for the first day of March:
— 76ers are 1-12-1 ATS in last 14 road games.
— Dallas covered six of last seven games with Minnesota.
— Six of last nine Charlotte-Milwaukee games went over.
— Nuggets covered their last eight games with Toronto.
— Lakers are 3-1-1 ATS in last five games with New Orleans.
— Golden State is 6-7 ATS in game following a win.

Quote of the Day:
“The one (baseball) we’re using right now is pretty similar to what we used in 2017. But I’ll remark here that, it’s just how I feel.”
Masahiro Tanaka, talking about how baseballs have changed this year

Sunday’s quiz
Which current NBA team used to be known as the Buffalo Braves?

Saturday’s quiz
When Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford played high school football in Texas, Clayton Kershaw was the center on Stafford’s team.

Friday’s quiz
Duke last won the ACC’s regular season basketball title in 2010, when they tied Maryland; their last outright regular season title was in 2006.

************************************************************************

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday…….

13) UCLA 69, Arizona 64— Bruins won their last seven games, have half-game lead over Oregon atop the Pac-12, which is amazing, seeing how back on Jan 15, UCLA was 7-9, with home losses to Hofstra, Cal State-Fullerton.

In this game, UCLA was 29-38 on foul line, Arizona 10-16; Arizona coach Miller got tossed from the game for expressing his displeasure with the officiating.

12) TCU 75, Baylor 72— Horned Frogs scored 54 second half points, knocked Baylor out of a tie for first with Kansas atop Big X standings. Bears lost two of last three games, after they had won 23 in a row.

11) Seton Hall 88, Marquette 79— Powell/Mamukelashvili combined for 54 points as Pirates sweep a Marquette team thats lost four of its last five games.

This is Steve Wojciechowski’s sixth year as Marquette’s coach; he is 51-55 in regular season conference games, 0-2 in NCAA tourney games, losing to Murray State, South Carolina.

10) BYU 81, Pepperdine 64— BYU star Yoeli Childs had 38 points, 14 rebounds; he’s missed 13 games this year- BYU is 8-5 in those games, 16-2 when he plays, including a win vs Gonzaga.

BYU is experience team #9 and has some older players to begin with, because some of them go on Mormon missions; they’ll be a scary team to play in two weeks.

9) Kentucky 73, Auburn 66— Wildcats made 27-33 on four line, Auburn 13-22; in their first meeting, Tigers were 33-44 on foul line, Kentucky 20-24. Go figure.

During a TV timeout in first half, a Kentucky student hit a half court shot for $10,000. Cool.

8) Virginia 52, Duke 50— Cavaliers won their 6th straight game, five by 3 or fewer points.

Duke lost its third straight road game; they’re game behind Florida St/Louisville in ACC. Blue Devils haven’t won an ACC regular season title since 2010.

7) Upsets:
— Texas (+11) 68, Texas Tech 58
— Lipscomb (+9) 77, Liberty 71
— Oklahoma (+8) 73, West Virginia 62
— TCU (+7.5) 75, Baylor 72
— New Mexico (+7.5) 66, Utah State 64
— Providence (+7) 58, Villanova 54
— Eastern Washington (+7) 68, Northern Colorado 64
— North Carolina (+6) 92, Syracuse 79

6) There are 15 basketball teams in the ACC; only four of them are over .500 in conference play. ACC is 5th-ranked league this year, their lowest since they were #6 in 2013.

5) Hofstra 94, James Madison 81— Hofstra has never won the CAA tournament, but they’re the #1 seed this year; last time they made the NCAA’s, Hofstra came out of America East.

#2 seed Wm & Mary has never been in the NCAA tournament, period, so the CAA tourney will be an event where the two favorites are maidens playing against teams that have won.

4) Eastern Washington 68, Northern Colorado 64— Eagles are tied for first with Montana in Big Sky, with two games left in regular season, a game ahead of Northern Colorado. This league is improved this season; their conference tournament in Boise should be fun.

3) Northern Iowa 70, Drake 43— This was Drake’s first home sellout in 11 years, but they got waxed by the Panthers here.

Northern Iowa is 25-5, but if they don’t win Arch Madness next week, they’re going to be a very nervous group on Selection Sunday.

2) Yale 66, Princeton 63— Bulldogs win their two games this weekend by total of six points, still lead Ivy League by a game with two left to play. Ivy League is ranked #16, its highest ranking in five years; that year, their champ got a 13-seed in NCAA’s. 13-seeds can win a game.

1) Illinois State 71, Evansville 60— On November 12, Purple Aces upset #1 Kentucky 67-64 in Rupp Arena; a few weeks after that, their coach got suspended/fired for off-court stuff, and the Purple Aces’ season went in the ashcan, like, totally in the ashcan.

They went 0-16 in the MVC.

Evansville is the first D-1 team EVER to beat the #1 team in the country and also go winless in conference play that same season.
