3.63— German Marquez, NYY

3.65— Zach Eflin Phil, Mike Soroka, Atl

3,67— Masahiro Tanaka, NYY

3.69— Sandy Alcantara, Mia

3.70— Kyle Hendricks Cubs, Joe Musgrove, Pitt

Quote of the Day:
“Come on. Is that really a possibility? They’re not really thinking about that. Are they?……I hate it. I think it’s stupid.”
Clayton Kershaw, talking about the possibility of robot umps in the major leagues

Friday’s quiz

Which retired tennis star once played a judge in an episode of Law and Order?

Thursday’s quiz
Lovie Smih was the Chicago Bears’ coach the last time they played in a Super Bowl.

Wednesday’s quiz
14 Vice-Presidents later became President of the United States.

***********************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…..

13) Bears 31, Cowboys 24:
— Dallas drove 75 yards on 17 plays (8:57) for a TD on their first drive.
— Cowboys’ next five drives: 19 plays, 58 yards, 2 first downs, 0 points.
— Dallas lost four of last five games, but still leads NFC East at 6-7.

— Trubisky ran ball nine times for 64 yards and a TD; he threw for three TD’s.
— Bears won four of last five games; they won field position by 19 yards.
— Chicago has outscored opponents 98-30 in 3rd quarter this year.

12) There are two divisions in the ACC during football season, the Atlantic and the Coastal. The winners meet in the ACC title game, this year being held in Charlotte.

Over the last nine years, Clemson/Florida State have won the Atlantic Division every year, but over the last seven years, the Coastal Division has been won by seven different teams. The true definition of parity; seven division champs in seven years.

11) Ohio State 74, North Carolina 49— This is the first time since 1949-50 that North Carolina hasn’t scored 80+ points in any of their first eight games in a season. Tar Heels are 6-2, with both of their losses are against top 15 teams.

10) UNLV 81, Fresno State 80 2OT— Rebels have already played four OT games; this was first one they won- it was their conference opener, so it was more important than the other ones.

9) Louisiana Tech 74, Mississippi State 67— Good win for Conference USA. Tech made 10-16 on arc in this game. State made 11-23 on arc and still lost.

Auburn 81, Furman 78 OT— Furman led this game by 14 with 16:09 to play; they made 13-31 on arc, but Auburn rallies to stay unbeaten, despite turning ball over 19 times (-4).

8) Ideas for reality TV shows:
— Inside the room as they make the NFL schedule each year.
— Inside the room of a major league team approaching the trade deadline.
— Inside agent Scott Boras’ entourage during the Winter Meetings.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Milwaukee got C Omar Narvaez from Seattle for minor league P Adam Hill and a competitive balance draft pick.
— Mets got OF Jake Marisnick from Houston for two minor leaguers.

6) From ESPN.com: Over/under season win totals that already cashed:
Seahawks over 8.5
49ers over 8
Ravens over 8
Bills over 7

Chargers under 10
Eagles under 10
Falcons under 8.5
Bengals under 6

5) Former Auburn QB Joey Gatewood is transferring to Kentucky; not often a kid transfers to another school in the same league. He will be eligible to play in 2021, and hopefully, those two teams will play once or twice while he is playing for the Wildcats.

4) Michigan-Kentucky are going to play a basketball game in London next December.

3) Indiana Hoosiers are only D-I college hoop team that hasn’t played a game yet away from its home arena- they play at Wisconsin Saturday.

2) Suns 139, Pelicans 132 OT— Booker scored 44 points for the Suns, who blew a 16-point lead in 4th quarter. Four of five New Orleans starters scored 20+ points in the loss.

1) Baseball’s winter meetings are next week; a good time to think about next season and try and make some decisions about my fantasy baseball team, which had a cruddy year LY. One of the bigger decisions; what writers do I trust for information?

Last year I was reading some stuff on The Athletic, and this writer was raving about a pitcher on the Blue Jays, Trent Thornton. I didn’t have any opinion on Thornton myself, but I took a leap of faith in the writer and added Thornton, who proceeded to get treated like a piñata by hitters— his ERA on August 31 was 5.48 (he did have a solid September).

No bueno. Moral of the story: Be careful who you listen to.

The Pens are staying in the thick of the race thanks in part to the Eastern Conferences second-best goal differential at home (+20) and only trail the Boston Bruins for most points on home ice.

The Crosby-less Penguins (3-2 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) come into Friday’s game against the Arizona Coyotes (3-2 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) winners of their last four and most recently blanked the Cup champs 3-0 on Wednesday. Pittsburgh has taken 17 of a possible 19 points at home since October 29 and have also won five of the last six games versus Arizona including the last five contests in Pittsburgh.

Take the Pens’ 3-way ML for this Friday night matchup.

MATINEE MONEY MAKING

The Vancouver Canucks are 7-4-1 O/U at home this year and have hit the Over in eight of their last 11 games. Since November 15, the Canucks (2-3 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) sit seventh in expected goals for and 28th in expected goals against. Add that up and you get a team that has the second-most goals per game behind the porous Montreal Canadiens.

The Buffalo Sabres (2-3 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) will continue their West Coast road trip on Saturday in Vancouver as they play the second game of a three-game road trip in four nights. The Sabres are 4-2 O/U in their last six as Buffalo’s penalty kill has been near the bottom of the league for the entirety of the season.

With the Canucks scoring on 33 percent of their power plays since November 15, we are expecting some lamplighters on Saturday’s 4:00 p.m. afternoon game (1:00 p.m. in Vancouver). We will take the Over at 6.5 and hammer it if it opens at 6.

BIG DOGS BITE

Moving to Saturday night, the Los Angeles Kings (2-3 SU, 1-4 O/U last five) will take their nine-game road losing streak (as of Friday) to Calgary (4-1 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) in what will be the backend of a traveling back-to-back. L.A. has not scored more than two goals in any of its nine consecutive away losses.

Special teams are also killing the last-place Kings as they have the fourth-worst power play since Halloween and are burying their scoring chances at a 12 percent rate which is also fourth-worst.

The Flames are 0-9-1 O/U in their last 10 as only the Detroit Red Wings have scored fewer goals since November 1. With two of the lowest-scoring teams, we are taking the plunge on the Under 5.5 while also taking the Under 2.5 on the Kings’ team total. We wouldn’t call you crazy either for sprinkling a little on the Kings’ ML as the price will tempting.

SLEEPY SUNDAY SHOWDOWN

It has been tough sledding for the Winnipeg Jets’ opponents of late as the Jets are conceding just 2.2 goals against in their last 10 and 1.4 goals in their last five. On top of that, the Jets have taken 15 of a possible 20 points in their last ten and are just six points out of the top spot in the West.

The Anaheim Ducks (2-3 SU, 3-2 O/U) will play Friday night at home and then make the trip north for their Sunday matinee against the Jets (3-2 O/U, 1-4 O/U last five). The Ducks’ offense hasn’t been generating many scoring chances as they have the sixth-fewest since November 15. Honestly, don’t expect many quality chances in this game with both teams sitting in last and second-last place in shots for and both in the Top-10 in shots against over the last three weeks.

We like the Jets to keep their opponents in check Sunday and are taking the Ducks’ team total Under 2.5 as well as the game total Under 5.5.

GOALIE PROFILE: CARTER HART, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

It has been anything but a consistent season for the Flyers’ young goalie this year. Carter won his first two starts of the year, then dropped his next four, then won four straight, then lost four in a row and how he is riding a three-game winning streak. We might be able to jump on the netminder for one more victory before his system switches to losing mode.

The Flyers dropped their first game in regulation in eight games with Brian Elliott in net, meaning the Flyers management will most likely switch over to Hart for the team’s Saturday 1:00 p.m. home tilt against one of the East’s worst road teams, the Ottawa Senators.

With Hart staying hot and carrying a 1.44 goals against in afternoon games over his short career, we have no problem taking the plus-money puck line (-1.5) even in the uncommon world of early games. The Senators are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road losses while the Flyers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home wins.

INJURY UPDATE: F MITCH MARNER, TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

The $10.9 million man has returned to the Leafs’ lineup and saw plenty of ice time with Auston Matthews on Wednesday versus the Avalanche. The young winger looked rusty in his return which didn’t do much to spark a struggling Leaf’s offense even though the team had 26 scoring chances on 39 shots but went 1-for-12 in high danger shooting.

Things will turn around for the Leafs as they are dealing with some tough puck luck. Toronto has the second-most scoring chances for over the last 30 days but are scoring on just 11 percent of those chances (regular shots have an average of about a 8-12-percent chance of scoring).

Maybe with Marner back and a game under his belt, it will help the Leafs capitalize as they are getting great chances — third in high-danger chances for — but just not finishing. The Leafs head out on a four-game, out-of-conference road trip with a stop in St. Louis on Saturday night. The money line is hard to swallow with the Leafs’ poor special teams play of late but perhaps they get their scoring touch back against an unlikely opponent.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• The Detroit Red Wings continue to lose, stretching their streak to double digits. Detroit is 0-6 ATS in its last six and 5-12 ATS since November. The Wings will face a hot Penguins team at home on Saturday and a puck line bet or alternative puck line may be in order.

• If you have been paying attention to totals and first-period totals, then maybe you have noticed that we are at the stretch of the year where the Unders are the majority. Looking at all 31 teams and their last 10 games, only four teams are hitting first-period Overs at 70 percent or better and 20 teams are hitting the Over 1.5 at 50 percent or worse. Looking at full-game totals, the Unders hit at 51 percent last week and 54 percent over the last month.

• The Winnipeg Jets are the most profitable team this year. Winnipeg is 17-11 SU and would have returned bettors $922 at $100 per game. The Jets’ only game this weekend is Sunday versus the Anaheim Ducks.

Jarry spoils Kessel's return, Penguins beat Coyotes 2-0
December 6, 2019
By The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) Tristan Jarry spoiled Phil Kessel's return to Pittsburgh, turning aside all 33 shots to post his second consecutive shutout as the Penguins edged the Arizona Coyotes 2-0 Friday night.

Kessel helped Pittsburgh to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2016 and 2017 before being traded to the Coyotes in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk last summer. He received a rousing ovation during the first period and played 21 inspired minutes but couldn't solve Jarry.

Jarry won for the fifth time in six starts and is making a serious case to supplant Matt Murray as Pittsburgh's top goaltender.

Evgeni Malkin broke a scoreless tie 7:13 into the third period to put the Penguins in front. Brandon Tanev chipped in an empty netter with two seconds remaining as the Penguins won their fifth straight meeting with the Coyotes.

Antti Raanta finished with 24 saves but couldn't quite match Jarry, who stole the show during Kessel's highly anticipated return.

CANADIENS 2, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Nate Thompson scored with less than two minutes left in the third period and Montreal beat New York for its second victory in the last 11 games.

Brendan Gallagher also scored for the Canadiens. Carey Price made 29 saves and improved to 7-2-0 in his last nine games at Madison Square Garden.

Brendan Smith scored for the Rangers. Alexandar Georgiev made 31 saves in his second straight start in place of Henrik Lundqvist, who was feeling under the weather.

The loss was the Rangers' 17th in their last 23 games against the Canadiens since the start of 2013.

When these teams met in Montreal on Nov. 23, they played an instant classic. The Canadiens led 4-0 before the Rangers stormed back to win 6-5.

BLACKHAWKS 2, DEVILS 1, SO

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Kirby Dach scored in the fifth round of the shootout to lift Chicago over New Jersey.

Chicago won its second game in two nights. Corey Crawford preserved the victory by stopping Jack Hughes on the final shootout attempt to cap a night in which he won his 250th game. He had 29 saves.

Alex DeBrincat scored in the second period for Chicago, and Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane also connected in the shootout.

Taylor Hall scored for the Devils, who are 0-2 under interim coach Alain Nasreddine. Mackenzie Blackwood had 28 saves, but he was defenseless when Dach roofed his shootout attempt.

Nikita Gusev and Jesper Boqvist scored for New Jersey in the shootout, while Kyle Palmieri and Hall were stopped in addition to Hughes.

Hughes, the top pick in this year's draft, returned to the lineup after missing three games with a lower body injury.

OILERS 2, KINGS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Leon Draisaitl and Alex Chiasson each had a goal and an assist as Edmonton moved back into the top spot in the Pacific Division with a win over Los Angeles.

Mikko Koskinen made 35 saves for the Oilers (18-10-3), who improved to 8-4-2 at home.

Michael Amadio scored for the Kings (11-17-2), who have lost three straight games and 10 in a row on the road.

CAPITALS 3, DUCKS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jakub Vrana scored the go-ahead goal less than two minutes into the third period and Washington beat Anaheim in a physical battle Friday night.

Travis Boyd and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored for Washington. Braden Holtby had 24 saves.

Ryan Getzlaf and Adam Henrique scored for Anaheim. Ryan Miller had 33 saves.

The game comes 2+ weeks after the Capitals' Garnet Hathaway was given a three-game suspension for spitting on the Ducks' Erik Gudbranson after the players paired off late in Washington's 5-2 home victory.

Gudbranson and Hathaway squared off twice Friday.

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

13) Oregon 37, Utah 15— This score makes the Oklahoma-Baylor game a play-in game for the 4-team national playoff, unless Georgia upsets LSU tomorrow night. Ducks led this game 23-0, Utes got back within 23-15 but that was it.

How do you handicap a disappointed Utah team when they play in their bowl game?

12) There have been 18 conference games in college basketball so far this season; home favorites are 5-5 ATS, home underdogs are 3-5. Home teams are 8-10 ATS, underdogs 8-10.

11) Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement ends after the 2021 season; lot of people think that when 2022 starts, both leagues will have the DH, so look for NL teams to add a sluggish defensive player who can hit in the next year or so, with 2022 in mind.

Some teams will probably use the DH to give guys a day off from playing in the field, while keeping their bat in the lineup. Will be curious to see how each team handles the change.

10) San Diego Padres added OF Tommy Pham in a deal with Tampa Bay; Rays get OF Hunter Renfroe, SS prospect Xavier Edwards and a prospect to be named later. Pham hit .273 with an .819 OPS LY, with 33 doubles, 21 homers, 68 RBI, 77 runs and 25 steals LY for the Rays

9) Four college football coaches used the job opening at Florida State to get contract extensions at their current job: Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, Penn State’s James Franklin, Washington State’s Mike Leach and Indiana coach Tom Allen.

Ole Miss is set to hire Lane Kiffin as their new football coach; Kiffin could write a hell of a book, with some of the jobs he’s had— Tennessee, USC, the Raider- he was an assistant coach at Alabama, too.

8) New York Knicks fired head coach David Fizdale Friday after the team’s 4-18 start. It isn’t Fizdale’s fault; the Knicks have a terrible owner, a mediocre front office- their roster isn’t a winning one. The bigger question is this: Why did they hire Fizdale in the first place?

7) Get well soon to Jeff Tedford, who resigned as football coach at Fresno State due to health concerns; Tedford had heart problems five years ago, when he had to step down as OC with the Tampa Bay Bucs in the NFL. No word whether his health issues now are heart related.

6) A few days after Georgetown’s off-court problems resulted in two of their starters entering the transfer portal, the Hoyas also lost a top 100 recruit for next year. Not good.

Terrance Williams is a 6-6 F from Gonzaga College HS in Washington DC who originally chose the Hoyas over Michigan and Notre Dame.

5) Florida Gators will name its basketball court after former coach Billy Donovan on February 15, during the NBA All-Star break; Donovan led the Gators to two national championships and four Final Four appearances during his 19 seasons in Gainesville.

4) Duke 77, Virginia Tech 63– Blue Devils outscored Tech 39-22 after trailing by 3 at the half; they win their ACC opener.

3) Michigan 103, Iowa 91— Wolverines scored 1.39 points/possession- there won’t be many figures higher than that anywhere all season long. Not often a team scores 103 points but no one on that team scores 20+. Iowa’s Garza scored 44 of their 91 points.

2) Patriots will re-sign Nick Folk to kick for them Sunday; he had an appendectomy couple weeks ago, so they cut him and brought in another guy last week, but that guy missed a PAT in Houston so they told him to take a hike. New England has used four kickers this year.

1) Interesting article in The Athletic about RJ Hampton, a young man who skipped college to play pro ball for the New Zealand Breakers of Australia’s National Basketball League- he hopes to be in the NBA at this time next year.

Hampton will make around $500,000 this season; he also signed a five-year shoe deal with Li-Ning. He averaged 10.5 ppg in his first six games of a 28-game season- in the short time he’s been in New Zealand, the Breakers’ general manager quit, and an assistant coach walked out at an airport- the team also lost four of its first six games.

Hampton had the grades to go to college and play there, but chose this route instead. Lot of other people are watching to see how he does.

Miller scores in OT, Canucks beat Sabres 6-5
December 8, 2019
By The Associated Press

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) J.T. Miller scored a power-play goal 3:21 into overtime and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Buffalo Sabres 6-5 Saturday.

Buffalo's Marcus Johansson scored with 59 seconds left and his team's goalie pulled in the third period to tie it at 5, but Miller scored his 13th of the season off a pass from rookie defenseman Quinn Hughes in OT.

The Sabres thought they had scored in overtime, but the goal was disallowed because of a delayed interference penalty to Henri Jokiharau. Miller scored on the ensuing power play.

Antoine Roussel and Josh Leivo had two goals each for the Canucks. Tyler Myers added a short-handed goal and an assist, while Jake Virtanen had two assists. Thatcher Demko, making his second consecutive start, stopped 23 shots.

Rookie Victor Olofsson had a goal and an assist for Buffalo, which battled back from deficits of 2-0, 3-2 and 5-3. Kyle Okposo, Zemgus Girgensons and Rasmus Ristolainen also scored for the Sabres. Jack Eichel had three assists. Carter Hutton made 24 saves.

FLYERS 4, SENATORS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Scott Laughton had a goal, an assist and a hard check in a chippy contest to lead Philadelphia.

Ivan Provorov, Travis Konecny and Shayne Gostisbhere also scored for the Flyers, who have won six of seven. Carter Hart stopped 27 shots.

Anthony Duclair scored twice for Ottawa, and Brady Tkachuk also had a goal. The Senators have lost six of seven. Craig Anderson gave up two goals on six shots before leaving with a lower body injury in the first period. Anders Nilsson came on and stopped 13 of the 15 shots he faced.

AVALANCHE 4, BRUINS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Ian Cole scored his first goal of season in his 500th career NHL game, backup goalie Pavel Francouz stopped all 16 shots he faced in relief and Colorado got its season-high sixth straight win.

Andre Burakovsky, Valeri Nichushkin and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for Colorado, which has won 11 of its last 14 games. The Avalanche posted their 11th win in their last 12 games in Boston, with their lone loss in the stretch coming in the last trip on Feb. 10 last season.

Francouz replaced starter Phillip Grubauer late in the first period. Grubauer left with an apparent injury after giving up a goal on four shots.

Chris Wagner scored for Boston, which lost its second straight and first in regulation at home this season after going 12-0-5. Jaroslav Halak had 16 saves for the Bruins, the NHL's last team without a regulation loss on home ice.

PANTHERS 4, BLUE JACKETS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves against his former team and Josh Brown scored the winning goal in Florida's win over Columbus.

Bobrovsky made his first start against the Blue Jackets since signing with the Panthers on July 1. He played the previous seven seasons with Columbus.

Evgenii Dadonov, Brett Connolly and Mike Hoffman also scored for Florida. Aleksander Barkov had two assists. The Panthers beat Columbus for the first time in eight games.

Vladislav Gavrikov scored for the Blue Jackets. Elvis Merzlikins stopped 23 shots. Columbus lost its fourth straight game and is 0-10-3 when the opponent scores first.

HURRICANES 6, WILD 2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Sebastian Aho had three goals and two assists for his first career five-point game as Carolina ended Minnesota's five-game winning streak.

Teuvo Teravainen added three assists and Lucas Wallmark, Andrei Svechnikov and Joel Edmundson also scored for the Hurricanes, who won for the third time in four games. Petr Mrazek stopped 22 shots for his NHL-leading 10th home win.

Ryan Donato and Mats Zuccarello scored for Minnesota. Alex Stalock had 34 saves.

MAPLE LEAFS 5, BLUES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Auston Matthews broke out of a slump with two goals, Zach Hyman also scored twice and Toronto beat St. Louis.

Jason Spezza capped the Maple Leafs' four-goal first period outburst with his fourth of the season. Frederik Andersen made 26 saves for Toronto, which had lost seven in a row against St. Louis.

David Perron and Ivan Barbashev scored for the Blues, who have lost two in a row following a four-game winning streak. Jordan Binnington started and gave up four goals on 11 shots in the first 9 1/2 minutes before he was pulled. Jake Allen replaced him and stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced.

Murray didn't help his case to compete with Tristan Jarry for playing time, giving up two goals in the third period.

Robby Fabbri, Filip Hronek and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit, which has lost 11 straight - its longest since a franchise-record 14-game skid during the 1981-82 season. Jonathan Bernier was pulled midway through the third period after giving up four goals on 23 shots. Eric Comrie stopped all four shots he faced.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……

Random thoughts on a December day when I’m hunkered down inside because it is damn cold outside, and I’m already tired of winter:

Noon-4pm:
Oklahoma 30, Baylor 23 OT— NFL teams are very high on Baylor coach Matt Rhule as someone who will be an NFL head coach someday. His QB got knocked out of this game in the 2nd quarter, but they still took Oklahoma to OT, behind freshman 3rd-stringer Jacob Zeno, who completed only two passes, but for 159 yards.

11am local time kickoff means a 7am pre-game meal. Not an ideal situation, though, such an early kickoff. TV decides which games are played when.

This was Baylor’s first appearance in the Big X title game; they were outgained 146-16 in the first quarter, 433-265 for the game.

Baylor 63, Arizona 58— Feel bad for the Baylor basketball players, with this game at same time as the football game, which was played 98 miles away in Arlington. They actually let fans into the basketball game in Waco for free, and not that many showed up.

— Cheerleading trivia: Half of Baylor’s cheerleaders went to the football game, half stayed behind in Waco and went to the basketball game. The cheerleaders who stayed behind get to go to Baylor’s bowl game, which seems like it would be more fun than a 98-mile bus ride to Dallas.

Appalachian State 45, Louisiana 38— This game was 42-17 with 2:00 left in third quarter; Ragin’ Cajuns closed to within final margin with 1:19 left to play. ULL gained 513 yards, but their minus-2 turnover ratio did them in. App State’s last TD was a pick-6.

Miami OH 26, Central Michigan 21— RedHawks won their 16th MAC title, after gaining only 61 yards in the first half. CMU did great just getting to this game, after going 1-11 LY.

Ohio State 106, Penn State 74— If the NCAA tournament started tomorrow (it doesn’t), I’d pick a Louisville-Ohio State national title game.

4-7pm:
LSU 37, Georgia 10— Joe Burrow is going to win the Heisman Trophy; at one time, he was the 3rd-string QB at Ohio State. Three of the four QB’s in the national playoff are going to be guys who transferred from their original school.

Memphis 29, Cincinnati 24—- Not often teams play each other two weeks in a row; Tigers beat Cincinnati twice in eight days- thats the good news.

Bad news for Memphis— their coach is expected to bolt to Florida $tate today.

Boise State 31, Hawai’i 10— If you went to college at Hawai’i, how excited would you be about visiting Boise in December? Broncos win their third Muntain West title game.

Wisconsin 84, Indiana 64— Hoosiers were last D-I team in America to play outside their home arena, and it showed here- they got waxed. This was Indiana’s 17th loss in a row in Madison.

Creighton 95, Nebraska 76— Bluejays led this game 37-7; Nebraska has ton of work to do on the recruiting trail.

Memphis 65, UAB 57— Blazers were up 20 in first half, but Memphis is so talented; they won this going away. When Tigers get Wiseman back in January, they have shot at developing into a Final Four contender. Big afternoon for the Memphis athletic department.

Xavier 73, Cincinnati 66— One of best rivalries in the country, been dominated by the home team recently. Naji Marshall scored 31 for the Musketeers.

7pm-on…..:
— Clemson 62, Virginia 17— Tigers won their fifth consecutive ACC title, winning their 28th game in a row. Lawrence threw for 302 yards, four TD’s.

— Ohio State 34, Wisconsin 21— Badgers led 21-7 at halftime, then got crushed in second half; Ohio State wins Big 14 title game for third year in a row.

Western Kentucky 86, Arkansas 79 OT— Hilltoppers scored last five points of regulation, but may have lost star C Massey to a knee injury. This was Arkansas’ first loss of season.

Marquette 77, Kansas State 65— Solid road win for the Golden Eagles, who made 12-22 on the arc.

Elsewhere…….
— Portland Trailblazers’ Rodney Hood tore his left achilles Friday night; he was scoring 11 ppg in 29.5 mpg. Tough injury to come back from.

— Texas Rangers signed P Jordan Lyles to a 2-year, $16M deal, after signing Kyle Gibson to a 3-year, $30M deal last week.

— Florida State is expected to name Memphis coach Mike Norvell its new football coach at a news conference Sunday afternoon.

— Colts will have Chase McLaughlin kicking for them in Tampa Sunday, in place of Adan Vinatieri.

— NFL fined the Detroit Lions’ organization $75,000, HC Matt Patricia $25,000, and GM Bob Quinn $10,000 for failing to properly update the injury status of QB Matthew Stafford before the November 10 game against the Bears.

Quote of the Day:
“I’d say that it wasn’t handled right. He’s (Odell Beckham) not able to run as well as he as should be able to, as well as he knows. And that’s frustrating for him. You can sense some of his frustration, where that comes from. It wasn’t handled the right way, in our training room. It is what it is. His not 100% is still good enough for us.”
Baker Mayfield, who talks a lot

FLAMES WON’T MELT THIS AVALANCHE

On Monday, the second-place team in the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche, will host the Calgary Flames who will be on the front-end of a back-to-back road trip. The Avs offense is at full strength with its top-line finally back together after nearly a monthapart due to injuries.

The reunion is bad news for the league as Colorado has ripped off six straight wins and have outscored its opponents 26-10 since November 27.

Calgary has been playing good hockey of late, having won its last four, but those wins came against the Sabres (2), Kings and Senators while the Flames are scoring just 2.1 goals over thei last 10.

Avs’ starting goalie Philipp Grubauer is questionable after leaving Saturday’s game, but backup Pavel Francouz is no slouch and has won his last three games, holding opponents to just four goals on 92 shots.

Colorado is 7-1 ATS at home in its last eight wins this year. We are stacking this game and playing the Avalanche 3-way ML (-105) as well as the -1.5 for +170.

WILD FOR THE OVER

Since starting goalie Devan Dubnyk went down with an injury on November 17, the Minnesota Wild have allowed the third-most goals in the league. Minny is 3-0-2 O/U in its last five thanks to scoring three or more goals in each of its home games where they average 3.8 goals a game.

The Anaheim Ducks will travel to Minnesota on Tuesday for the second game of a two-game road trip before heading back to California. The Ducks have been playing some loose hockey on the road this year as they are 6-2 O/U in their last eight road games as their penalty kill is getting scored on nearly 40 percent of the time since mid-November — the worst-mark in the league.

We expect the Wild to start backup Kappo Kahkonen who is only 23 and has played just two games in the league. The rookie is due for a poor performance after two solid starts to begin his career and teams having more tape on him. Take the Over 6 and we will pound it if it opens at 5.5.

DETROIT SAD WINGS

The Winnipeg Jets will welcome the Detroit Red Wings to the Bell MTS Place (terrible name) with open arms on Tuesday as the Wings are riding a laughable 11-game losing streak. Over this shameful streak that began on November 14, Detroit’s opponents are scoring an average of 4.4 goals a game and have scored four or more in nine of the 11 games.

Things won’t get better for Detroit as they could be without their leading scorer in Tyler Bertuzzi who is playing close to 20 minutes a game but left Saturday’s game with an injury.

We are taking the Jets -1.5 as Detroit is 0-7 ATS in its last seven.

POOR PLAY POWERS OVER

On Wednesday, we turn our attention to two Eastern Conference teams who sit 13th and 14th in points over their last 10 games. The Montreal Canadiens have recently brought up rookie goalie Cayden Primeau after waiving backup Keith Kinklaid.

The move is an effort to spark something from the club as the Canadiens sit on the outskirts of a playoff spot and are tied for the league lead in goals allowed over their last 10. Although the Habs are just 1-4 O/U in their last five games as of Monday, they are 4-1-1 O/U in their previous six contests at home.

The Ottawa Senators have rewarded Over backers when they travel as the 14th-place Sens are 4-1 O/U in their last five road contests. This will also be their seventh road game in an eight-game stretch.

Making matters worse for Ottawa is the fact that its starting goalie Craig Andersen, who just returned from injury, was lifted from Saturday’s game against Philadelphia with another injury and his status is up in the air. We are banging the Over 6.5 on this Canadian hump day contest.

GOALIE PROFILE: TRISTAN JARRY, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Tristan Jarry has stopped all 61 shots he has faced over his last two starts and hasn’t allowed a goal in nearly 140 minutes of action. The Pens have also won five of his last six starts as the 24-year-old netminder is becoming one of a handful of bright young goaltenders in the league. Incredibly, Jarry has allowed more than two goals in just two of his 11 games this year and sits first in goals against (1.81) and save percentage (.943).

The Montreal Canadiens will try their best to solve Jarry on Tuesday and will probably have to do so at even strength. Montreal’s power play is in the bottom-10 over the last three weeks at 15 percent which is slightly better than its 28th-ranked penalty kill.

We are riding the hottest goalie in the league and will take the Pens 3-way ML on Tuesday night.

INJURY UPDATE: F PATRICE BERGERON, BOSTON BRUINS

The best could get better this week as the No. 1 team in the East, the Boston Bruins, may get the services of their top center in Patrice Bergeron. The two-way pivot has been out since Nov 26 and could suit up Monday versus the Ottawa Senators or Wednesday against the Washington Capitals. The Bruins went 5-2 SU without the centerman but have dropped their last two games and now head out on a four-game road trip along the East coast.

Getting Bergeron back will help in shaping out all four lines and especially the team’s power play. The Bruins’ PP scored at 17 percent without Bergeron but was the best in the league at 32 percent with him on the ice. Look for the Bruins to top their team total of 3.5 on Monday and Wednesday if Bergeron does rejoin the team.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• Through 14 home games, the Washington Capitals have been an Over machine going 11-2-1 O/U at Capital One Arena this year. On Monday, the Metropolitan’s best will entertain the Columbus Blue Jackets with the Over set at 6. The Caps are 8-2-1 O/U on totals of six and the Blue Jackets are 7-7-1 on totals of six.

• The L.A. Kings are surprisingly the only team in the league hitting first-period Overs at 80 percent in their last 10. The Kings will host the New York Rangers on Tuesday night. New York is 8-4 O/U on the road in first-period totals and is 6-4 O/U in its last 10.

• Away favorites went a cool 6-7 ATS last week which hasn’t happened often this year as away favorites are 34-76 (31%) over the course of the season. Away teams hit at over 57 percent in the last seven days going 26-19 which is almost bang on to their season mark of 56.59 percent. On Monday, the Boston Bruins are the only away favorite with their Puck Line (-1.5) at +135.
