THE DEVIL’S REJECTS

It’s been a rough year for the Devils, to say the least and Saturday’s 4-0 loss (Devils 0-for-8 on the powerplay) to the New York Rangers was a low point. On Monday, the Devils will travel to Buffalo to take on the Sabres (2-3 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) who took three of four points versus the Maple Leafs over the weekend.

The Devils (2-3 SU, 1-4 O/U last five) have scored 24 goals through 11 road games this year. That number ranks near the bottom of the league, but considering 10 of those goals came in two games against the struggling Canadiens recently, their road offense is even less potent than the stats suggest. New Jersey will also be without 2019 No.1 pick Jack Hughes as he won't travel with the team due to a lower-body injury.

We are riding the Sabres ML (-135) while also fading the Devils’ offense with a play on their team total Under 2.5.

CAPITAL GAINS

The San Jose Sharks (4-1 SU, 1-4 O/U last five) own the league’s best penalty kill and used it Saturday night to pick up two points on the road versus the Coyotes. With the win, the Sharks finished November 11-4 and with the second-most points in the West in the month. On Tuesday, the Washington Capitals (3-2 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) will travel across the country to face the surging Sharks.

The Capitals are the league’s best Over team at 19-7-1 O/U and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Washington is scoring over two five-on-five goals a game — the 5th-best mark in the league. The Sharks’ PK might be the best in the NHL, but San Jose has allowed the most five-on-five goals to date.

We are hitting the Capitals’ team total Over 3.5 for plus money as Washington knows how to score out West. The Caps have scored four or more goals in eight of their 14 games against Western Conference opponents while scoring at least three in 12 of 14. The Over is also in play as Washington is 10-3-1 O/U versus Western Conference teams this year.

FLYING UNDER THE FLYERS

On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs (4-1 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) and their new mojo will head to Philadelphia to take on the Eastern Conference’s best November team. The Flyers (4-1 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) finished the month 9-4-2 and had more points than any other club in the conference.

The Flyers and the Leafs played each other twice last month with both teams splitting a pair of overtime victories. We could see a closely-checked game between two recently successful teams, especially when the Flyers have allowed just 11 regulation goals in their last seven home games.

With both starting goalies sitting with save percentages above .929 in the last two weeks we are tailing the Under 6.5 on this Tuesday night play.

KEY WEST

The Edmonton Oilers (3-2 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) may be one of the best teams in the West but are just 7-7-3 versus Western Conference teams this year — thank goodness for the East. Edmonton has dominated their Eastern opponents to a 9-2 record this year. That’s bad news for the Ottawa Senators (1-4 SU, 1-4 O/U last five) who will travel to Edmonton on Wednesday after facing Vancouver on Tuesday.

After winning seven of nine games through the middle of November, the Sens’ flames have fizzled out of late. Canada’s Capitals are losers of four straight and are being outscored 13-4 in the process. Ottawa has also struggled out of the conference as they are 2-6-1 this year facing teams from the West.

We are taking the Oilers and the puck line (-1.5) as they are 4-1 ATS in their last five wins while Ottawa is 2-7 ATS in their last nine losses.

GOALIE PROFILE: ALEX GEORGIEV, NEW YORK RANGERS

Rangers goalie Alex Georgiev blanked the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, stopping all 33 shots he faced. The backup has now won three of his last four games and should get the chance to carry his shutout streak into Monday’s contest versus the Golden Knights.

The Rangers as a team are starting to tighten things up in the back end lately. The Under has hit in six of New York's last seven games as they are allowing under three goals over the last two weeks.

With Vegas also playing some low-scoring hockey of late — Under in four of their last six — we are taking the Under 6 on Monday night.

INJURY UPDATE: F MIKKO RANTANEN, COLORADO AVALANCHE

Colorado forward Mikko Rantanen suited up on Saturday for the first time since October 21. The young Fin only played 10:43 but registered four points in his return to the top line. The Avs No. 1 line is almost back to full strength but is still missing Gabriel Landeskog.

Having Rantanen is a huge boost for the Avalanche’s power play. Rantanen finished 10th in power play points a season ago and will only help Colorado’s PP that is Top-10 over the last two weeks.

The Avs will travel to Toronto for a Wednesday match versus the Leafs on a full, three days rest. With Toronto playing the night before, expect the Leaf’s to start Michael Hutchinson who is winless this year and carries a 5.16 goals against. Fire up the Avs ML, or a team-total bet for Wednesday.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• The Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings are currently riding the league’s worst losing streaks. Detroit has lost nine games in a row and will have to beat the Islanders at home on Monday to snap the skid. The Canadiens are losers of eight straight and will also have to beat the Islanders (Tuesday) to break their losing streak.

• On Saturday, we parlayed the top teams hitting first-period Overs and cashed +195. This week, the Avalanche, Hurricanes, Oilers and Lightning are the top first-period Over teams — hitting at 70 percent over their last 10. On Tuesday, both the Hurricanes and Lightning are parlay options and on Wednesday, the Avalanche and Oilers are a two-team possibility.

• The Winnipeg Jets own the best Under record at home at 3-8-1 O/U. They will host the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. The Stars are a Top-3 Under team on the road at 5-8 O/U. Fire up your Unders and just check the final score, because watching hockey for the Under is an acquired taste.

Allen gets shutout, Blues blank short-handed Blackhawks 4-0
December 3, 2019
By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Jake Allen made 38 saves, Brayden Schenn scored his team-leading 14th goal and the St. Louis Blues beat the short-handed Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 on Monday night for their fourth consecutive victory.

Jaden Schwartz, Tyler Bozak and Mackenzie MacEachern also scored for St. Louis, which improved to 13-3-3 since star forward Vladimir Tarasenko was sidelined by a left shoulder injury that required surgery.

It was Allen's first shutout of the season and No. 20 for his career, matching Jaroslav Halak for second on the franchise list. Brian Elliott leads the way with 25.

Chicago lost for the sixth time in seven games since a four-game win streak.

The last-place Blackhawks played a man short because of injuries and the salary cap, going with 11 forwards and six defensemen.

ISLANDERS 4, RED WINGS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Jordan Eberle scored two goals and Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves as New York handed Detroit its 10th straight defeat.

Anders Lee and Anthony Beauvillier also scored for the Islanders, who were outshot 31-25 but never trailed.

Dylan Larkin had the only goal for the Red Wings.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Tuch scored twice in the first four minutes and Vegas went on to a win over New York.

Reilly Smith and Max Pacioretty also scored to help the Golden Knights get their first three-game winning streak of the season. Malcolm Subban stopped 29 shots as Vegas improved to 5-2-1 after a season-high five-game skid (0-4-1).

Brendan Lemieux scored and Henrik Lundqvist finished with 28 saves for the Rangers, who were 4-0-1 in their previous five games.

The Rangers went 0 for 6 on the power play against a Vegas team that came in tied for fifth in penalty-killing.

Subban got the start while Marc-Andre Fleury is away from the team following his father's death.

SABRES 7, DEVILS 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists, and Buffalo used a five-goal first period to beat New Jersey.

Eichel scored 2:46 into the game, and Conor Sheary scored twice during the first 20 minutes. Jeff Skinner and Rasmus Asplund also had goals in the first, and Victor Olofsson and Henri Jokiharju scored in the second. Linus Ullmark made 44 saves for the Sabres.

Louis Domingue was pulled after allowing five goals on 15 shots. He was replaced by Mackenzie Blackwood, who made 15 saves.

The Sabres blew out New Jersey while celebrating the 50th anniversary of the birth of the franchise. Buffalo was awarded an expansion team on Dec. 2, 1969.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

Spreads for conference title games this weekend:

— Pac-12: Utah (-6.5, 48.5) vs Oregon

— Big X: Oklahoma (-8.5, 62.5) vs Oklahoma

— Memphis (-9.5, 57.5) vs Cincinnati

— Ohio State (-16, 56) vs Wisconsin

— Clemson (-29, 54) vs Virginia

Quote of the Day
“I’ve been drunk for a month.”
Washington Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo, who got married in Jamaica after the World Series

Tuesday’s quiz
What team was last Super Bowl champ that wasn’t either the #1 or #2 seed in their conference?

Monday’s quiz
Arizona Cardinals called St Louis home, before they moved to Arizona- they played in Chicago a long time ago, before moving to St Louis.

Sunday’s quiz
Arizona State football coach Herm Edwards played nine of his ten years in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles.

********************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……

13) Seahawks 34, Vikings 30:
— Seattle outscored Vikings 24-0 during a 10:32 span of 2nd half.
— Seahawks ran ball for 218 yards, getting 29 on a fake punt to extend one drive.
— Kirk Cousins is now 0-8 on Monday Night Football.
— Only four penalties were called; should be more games like that.

12) 55-year old Chris Petersen is stepping down as Washington’s football coach, citing the need to “re-charge”.

Coaching a big time program like that takes its toll, and with guys making so much money, guys are retiring earlier- Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer and now Petersen have all walked away in the last few years.

11) Michigan plays Louisville tonight in the Yum! Center; Wolverines went from unranked to #4 in country in this week’s top 25. Louisville is the 4th team to be ranked #1 this season.

10) Bad news for Georgetown basketball; their 2nd and 5th-leading scorers are both going to transfer.James Akinjo and Josh LeBlanc. Akinjo was the Hoyas’ point guard; LaPhonso Ellis said in the ESPN studio Monday night that Georgetown now “has no chance to make NCAAs”

9) Other news on college football coaching carousel:
— Boston College fired coach Steve Addazio.
— Rutgers re-hired Greg Schiano as coach; he was their coach from 2001-11.
— Ole Miss fired coach Matt Luke; the players aren’t happy.
— South Florida fired Charlie Strong.
— Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder left ODU after a 1-11 season.
— Texas Longhorns fired both their coordinators.

8) Random thought: Why is Creighton in the Big East? The school is in freakin’ Omaha, which is in Nebraska, which is pretty much in the middle of the country. I mean, Omaha is in eastern Nebraska, but Nebraska is directly below South Dakota- Creighton shouldn’t be in the Big East.

7) Virginia Commonwealth has had three basketball coaches in six years; they’ve sold out 140 consecutive home games. It is a very good job, it pays $1.2M a year, but they have trouble keeping guys there. Mark Few makes $1.78M a year at Gonzaga; at some point, you’d think someone would settle down there. I wonder if Shaka Smart regrets leaving?

6) So far this college basketball season, Ivy League underdogs are 13-6 ATS; league is getting better.

5) Disney/Apple hit home runs with the Christmas commercials they’re running during football games; the Apple commercial shows a couple of young girls using a tablet computer to make a video, featuring their grandfather and their late grandmother, using old photographs.

The Disney commercial shows a father and his daughter, as she prepares to leave for college; he relives their trips to Disney, back when she was a little girl. Two very good commercials.

4) Weird scheduling: these division rivals haven’t played each other yet this season, will play twice in last four weeks of season:

Titans-Texans, Eagles-Giants, Browns-Bengals.

3) Cincinnati Reds gave 3B Mike Moustakas a 4-year, $64M contract.

2) Memphis Tigers beat Cincinnati 34-24 in their regular season finale Saturday; the teams meet again this Saturday in the Conference USA title game, also in Memphis. Unusual.

1) We had around 18 inches of snow here in beautiful upstate New York the last couple days, depending on which town you live in, so here is a warm thought:

Baseball’s winter meetings start Monday in San Diego.

Marchessault's hat trick leads Golden Knights past Devils
December 3, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Jonathan Marchessault scored three straight goals in the third period to rally the Vegas Golden Knights over New Jersey 4-3 Tuesday night, hours after the Devils fired coach John Hynes.

Marchessault scored twice in the first 5:04 of the third to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 lead. He added a power-play goal midway through the period, and Vegas held on even after New Jersey's Nico Hischier scored 20 seconds later.

The Golden Knights have won four straight to improve to 15-11-4. Malcolm Subban had 32 saves, and Chandler Stephenson scored in his first game since being acquired Monday from the Washington Capitals.

Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 26 shots for the Devils. Kyle Palmieri and Jesper Bratt also scored.

Hynes was fired Tuesday after a 9-13-4 start that left the team in last place in the Metropolitan Division and with the NHL's second worst record.

FLYERS 6, MAPLE LEAFS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Claude Giroux scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and Philadelphia had three goals in the final 2:06 to get their fifth straight win.

CANADIENS 4, ISLANDERS 2

Scott Mayfield and Matthew Barzal scored in the third period for the Islanders, and Thomas Greiss finished with 36 saves.

LIGHTNING 3, PREDATORS 2, OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Nikita Kucherov scored at 2:35 of overtime to give Tampa Bay a victory over Nashville.

Victor Hedman and Ondrej Palat also scored and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 30 shots as the Lightning snapped a three-game skid.

Calle Jarnkrok and Kyle Turris had the goals for Nashville, which has lost three of its last four. Pekka Rinne finished with 28 saves.

BRUINS 2, HURRICANES 0

BOSTON (AP) - Charlie Coyle scored late in the third period, Jaroslav Halak stopped 24 shots for his second shutout of the season, and Boston beat Carolina for its eighth straight win.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Interesting NFL games this weekend:

— Cowboys (-3, 42.5) @ Bears

— Ravens (5.5, 43.5) @ Bills

— 49ers @ Saints (-3, 44)

— Broncos @ Texans (-9.5, 42)

— Chiefs @ Patriots (-3, 48.5)

— Seahawks (-1, 48) @ Rams

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) Carolina Panthers fired coach Ron Rivera Tuesday; Rivera was 76-63-1 as Carolina’s coach, 3-4 in playoff games, making playoffs four times in nine years, but going 12-16 the last two years, which happens to be coincide with Carolina changing owners.

Carolina owner David Tepper is a really rich hedge fund guy, worth $11.6B. Really rich people aren’t very patient. Because of that, the Panthers will have a new coach next year.

Tepper Trivia (from Wikipedia): “Tepper keeps a pair of brass testicles in a prominent spot on his desk, a present from former employees. He rubs them for luck during the trading day to get a laugh out of colleagues.”

12) Big snowstorm here this week; snowed for roughly 38 straight hours, which is unusual, and left quite a mess behind. Just about everything was closed here Monday, even the ****.

Frustrating part for me is, because I still have a gas bubble in my eye as my detached retina heals, can’t do any snow shoveling, so was stuck in the house here. Things got worse when my DirecTV went out because of the snow with 7:00 left in the Monday night game- caught the end of the game on my laptop.

Finally, Tuesday morning, the plow guy did a great job on my driveway, the sun melted the slush off my satellite dish, but I had to brush two feet of snow off my Nissan Rogue. The driveway is a mess but driveable, my TV works, the car is running and things got back to normal, kind of.

11) Tuesday was the 6-week anniversary of my retina operation; they originally told me the gas bubble in my eye would be gone in six weeks; while it has gotten a lot smaller, the bubble is still there. I appreciate all the work the people at Retina Care Centers have done for me, but it’ll be an excellent day when the bubble goes away.

Woman on the Today Show, think her name is Savannah Guthrie, she tore her retina when she got drilled in the eye with a toy train that her 2-year old son hit her with.

“Torn retina” sounds worse than “detached retina”, but apparently it isn’t, since she avoided the surgery that I had. Was interesting to listen to her doctor talk about retina surgery on TV the other day. Learned a lot.

10) Louisville 58, Michigan 43- Wolverines shot 25.9% from floor as they lose for first time in eight games. Ugly game.

9) Duke 87, Michigan State 75- Spartans don’t often give up 80+ points at home; Tom Izzo is 2-12 SU in his career against Duke.

Michigan State retired Draymond Green’s number at halftime of this game; lot of the Golden State Warriors were there to support Green- they play in Charlotte tonite.

8) In their last five games, Baltimore Ravens scored 22 TD’s on 40 drives, with four of the five opponents having winning records.

7) Surprising stat: Cincinnati Bengals are 10-3 ATS in last 13 games as a road underdog,

6) Great dialogue from the movie Oceans Eleven:
Julia Roberts: “You’re a liar and a thief.”

George Clooney: “I only lied about being a thief.”

I’ve seen Oceans Thirteen a few times, but saw Oceans Eleven for the first time last night. Excellent movie.

5) New England cut K Kai Forbath after one game where he missed a PAT; the guy who replaces him will be the Patriots’ fifth kicker this year.

4) Eagles’ backup QB Josh McCown is QB coach for Myers Park HS in Charlotte, where his sons Owen and Aiden play; he had retired from the NFL when he took the coaching job, but when the Eagles called this summer, McCown un-retired.

With the Eagles’ blessing, McCown flies back to Charlotte on Mondays, to be there as the quarterbacks coach for high school practice when the game plan is installed for the week, and then again on Fridays for games.

In case you were wondering, Atlantic Aviation offers light jets for about $13,000-$14,000 per round trip from Philadelphia to Charlotte, though there are discounts for regular customers. McCown pays for all the plane trips.

ESPN.com has an interesting story today on McCown’s coaching.

3) Miami 81, Illinois 79— This game, played Monday night, had Illinois coach Underwood so annoyed that he used all four of his timeouts in the first half. At one point, Miami led 45-18 with 4:33 left in the first half- it was 50-31 at the half.

lllinois stormed back in the 2nd half, but fell short.

2) Mountain West has a full schedule of conference games tonight, something different for December 4th. San Diego State at New Mexico is probably the best of the five games.

1) There is the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA, and then there is the relatively-new College Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City, which has credibility issues.

Norm Stewart went 634-333 in 32 years as Missouri’s coach; he went 12-16 in NCAA tournament games, going 0-2 in regional final games. Nice resume; he was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame n 2007, the second year the Hall of Fame existed.

Jerry Tarkanian went 761-202 in 30 years as a coach at UNLV, Long Beach State, Fresno State; he went 38-18 in NCAA tournament games, making four Final Fours, winning the 1990 national title. Tarkanian is in the Naismith HOF, but not the Collegiate Hall of Fame; why? How?

If you bring up Tarkanian’s issues with the NCAA and its rules, I’ll point out that Eddie Sutton was a 2011 inductee, which eliminates that issue.

If you tell me that Norm Stewart was a better coach than Tarkanian, well, you would leave me speechless, because you’re smarter than that.

In the Crease - Week 10
Joe Williams

Still the Champs

The St. Louis Blues have been red-hot, and they're not showing any signs of letting others take the Stanley Cup from them without a fight. The Blues are averaging 3.1 goals per game to rank 13th, while checking in sixth on the power-play. They're also fifth in goals against, ranking fifth in the NHL with just 2.5 goals per game while ranking sixth on the penalty kill, too. As such they enter the new week with a 18-5-3-3 record and 42 points, maintaining a healthy eight-point lead in the ultra-competitive Central Division. They continue to pile up wins, going 10-2 in the past 12 following a victory. And Jordan Binnington is still the one in net, going 13-4-2 with a 2.26 goals-against average and .926 save percentage, showing no signs of a regression. The bad news for everyone else is that backup Jake Allen has acclimated to a backup role and is now flourishing, too.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday, Dec. 4

St. Louis at Pittsburgh:
The Blues have Jordan Binnington in between the pipes for a matchup against Matt Murray and the Penguins in a marquee matchup on Hump Day. The Blues will be playing their fourth game in six days, and they seem to excel in that situation. They're 5-0 in the past past five in the fourth game of a 4-in-6. They have won 20 of the past 28 games on the road, too, as they appear poised for another championship run, and they're skipping the part where they struggled early in the season, unlike last year. The Blues have won six of the past seven trips to the Steel City, and the road team is 6-1 in the past seven in this series.

Washington at Los Angeles:
The road trip continues for the Caps in L.A., and you read about their dominance inside the Pacific Division above. They'll more than likely turn to rookie Ilya Samsonov to tend the cage in the second end of a back-to-back. They're 5-2 in the past seven when playing on no days of rest, and 21-9 in the past 30 as a road favorite, so don't discount them due to a perceived lack of rest or downgrade in net with their backup. They've fought through for the entire season. While the Kings entered the week with wins in seven of the past nine at Staples Center, they're just 6-22 in the past 28 against the Eastern Conference and 1-4 in the past five as an underdog. However, the Kings have been kryptonite to the Caps, for whatever reason, as Washington is 1-8 in the past nine trips to L.A., and 5-12 in the past 17 overall.

Thursday, Dec. 5

Vegas at N.Y. Islanders:
The Golden Knights kicked off their road trip with a successful 4-1 result against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday night behind Malcolm Subban. He has made four straight starts for the injured Marc-Andre Fleury, and the Knights haven't missed a beat, winning three in a row. These teams have yet to meet this season, but Vegas swept the season series in 2018-19, including a 3-2 win on the Island as moderate favorites last Dec. 12. The under is 2-0-1 in the past three meetings in this series, and the over hit in the first-ever meeting back on Oct. 30, 2017, but that was a game featuring Maxime Lagace in net for Vegas. He is long gone from the organization.

Buffalo at Calgary:
The Flames search for the season sweep against the Sabres after pushing past Buffalo in overtime in the first meeting on Nov. 27, an entertaining 3-2 battle between David Rittich and Linus Ullmark. Elias Lindholm sent the home folks away sad with the game-winning tally just 77 seconds into OT. That is one of 10 consecutive 'under' results for Calgary heading into the month of December, as the Flames are well rested since Nov. 30. The Sabres sit near the top of the Atlantic Division standings, but this will be a good measuring stick road trip to see exactly where they are. They throttled New Jersey 7-1 before heading out of town, including five first-period goals to chase Louis Domingue. While the 'over' has been the prevailing trend for the Sabres lately, the 'under' has hit in four straight against Western Conference foes.

Friday, Dec. 6

Los Angeles at Edmonton:
The Kings travel to Edmonton, and the Oilers likely have had this one circled on the calendar for a while. L.A. smacked the Oil around on Nov. 21, winning 5-1 at Staples Center for one of the worst beatings administered to the Oilers this season. Jonathan Quick turned back the clock in that one, while Mike Smith didn't have it that night. He is likely be remain sidelined due to a lower-body issue, so it will likely be Mikko Koskinen in the crease for this one. That's probably a good thing, because Smith has started the first two meetings and Los Angeles is averaging 5.0 goals per game in the first two, with the 'over' 1-0-1. Edmonton was able to come away with a 6-5 win in the season opener Oct. 5 at home.

Jarry stops 28 shots, Penguins beat Blues 3-0
December 4, 2019

PITTSBURGH (AP) Stefan Noesen celebrated his return to the NHL with his first goal of the season and the banged up Pittsburgh Penguins handed the St. Louis Blues their first regulation road loss since before Halloween with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night.

Noesen, a five-year veteran who signed a minor-league deal with the Penguins in the offseason, pounded home a rebound off a Jared McCann shot with 39 seconds left in the second period for his first goal since last March when he played for New Jersey.

Teddy Blueger scored 39 seconds into the game to give the Penguins the early lead and Alex Galchenyuk's second of the season early in the third period provided Tristan Jarry all the cushion he needed.

Jarry stopped 28 shots to post his third career shutout as the Penguins drew a measure of revenge after getting blown out by the defending Stanley Cup champions last weekend.

Jordan Binnington finished with 30 saves for St. Louis, but the Blues saw their 10-game road point streak end against a patchwork Pittsburgh lineup missing a handful of key contributors. Forwards Sidney Crosby, Nick Bjugstad, Bryan Rust and Patric Hornqvist and defenseman Brian Dumoulin all out of the lineup due to injuries and defenseman Jack Johnson was a late scratch after falling ill before the opening faceoff.

Pittsburgh, however, survived thanks in large part to Jarry, who withstood a major second-period push from the Blues to hand St. Louis its first regulation road loss since Oct. 26. The Blues were one win shy of tying the franchise record for longest road point streak set during the 1999-2000 season but fell behind early and never caught up.

Blueger gave the Penguins the early lead when he deflected Marcus Pettersson's point shot over Binnington's left shoulder for his third of the season and first since Oct. 22. Pittsburgh peppered Binnington relentlessly but Binnington hung in there and St. Louis responded with sustained pressure in the second against a group of Penguins defensemen that included Chad Ruhwedel, Juuso Riikola and Zach Trotman - who had played 25 games combined coming in.

Jarry preserved the lead thanks to a handful of sharp saves and the Penguins received a late boost when the goal-scoring touch that propelled Noesen's hot start in the minors followed him to the NHL. McCann fired a low, hard shot from the left circle that smacked off Binnington's pads and right to Noesen on the doorstep. He slammed the puck into the empty net to make it 2-0 and celebrated with a guttural scream while getting mobbed by his linemates.

Galchenyuk, who had scored just once in his first 18 games with Pittsburgh after being acquired from Arizona in a blockbuster offseason trade in exchange for popular forward Phil Kessel, broke in alone on Binnington and stuffed the puck over Binnington's blocker 4:59 into the third. Jarry did the rest while winning for the fourth time in his last five starts.

NOTES: St. Louis scratched D Robert Bortuzzo and F Austin Poganski. ... Rust skated on Wednesday morning and could be nearing a return after getting hurt during practice on Friday. ... St. Louis went 0 for 4 on the power play. The Penguins were 0 for 5 with the man advantage.

Nichushkin lifts Avalanche past Maple Leafs 3-1
December 4, 2019

TORONTO (AP) Valeri Nichushkin scored a short-handed goal in the third period, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and an assist, Joonas Donskoi also scored and Philipp Grubauer stopped 38 shots for the Avalanche.

Zach Hyman scored for Toronto and Frederik Andersen, starting on consecutive nights for the first time since January 2017, had 27 saves.

After killing off Jake Muzzin's four-minute penalty for high-sticking early in the third, thanks in large part to a big stop by Andersen on Donskoi, the Maple Leafs' first man advantage turned into a disaster.

Jason Spezza's stick shattered on a shot and as the Toronto center tried to keep the puck in with his feet at the blue line, he got caught up with Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly. That allowed Nichushkin to move in all alone and bury his third goal of the season upstairs at 6:40.

Toronto, which had Mitch Marner back after he missed 11 games with a high ankle sprain, pushed as the period wore on and pressed late, but couldn't get anything past Grubauer with Andersen on the bench before Donskoi iced it into an empty net with 79 seconds left.

The Maple Leafs were coming off Tuesday's embarrassing 6-1 loss at Philadelphia - performance where Toronto was in the game in the third period only to fall apart in the waning minutes.

Star center Auston Matthews said the team ''quit'' with the game out of hand, leaving Andersen hung out to dry on two late goals 12 seconds apart in the final minute. Sheldon Keefe - in just his sixth game as head coach - addressed the team immediately after the final buzzer in Philadelphia.

Andersen then told his coach he wanted to play against Colorado even though backup Michael Hutchinson was originally scheduled to get the start.

This game marked Avalanche center Nazem Kadri's return to Scotiabank Arena for the first time since an offseason trade from Toronto to Colorado in exchange for defenseman Tyson Barrie and forward Alexander Kerfoot. Kadri, the seventh pick in the 2009 NHL draft, had 161 goals and 196 assists in 561 games with the Maple Leafs.

MacKinnon opened the scoring at 10:52 of the second period on the first power play of the night. After the Avalanche gained the zone, Mikko Rantanen snapped a cross-ice pass to MacKinnon, who had time to shoot into the top corner on Andersen from the faceoff dot for his 18th.

Toronto responded just 1:50 later when Kerfoot fed a no-look pass in front for Hyman to redirect past Grubauer for his third.

Andersen had the fans at Scotiabank Arena chanting his name earlier in the period following consecutive pad saves on Nichushkin.

Rookie scoring leader Cale Makar came close to getting on the board off the rush in the first, but Andersen was there to deny the slick defenseman before Matthews had a good chance from a tight angle moments later.

Keefe, who came in 4-2-0 in his six games behind the bench since replacing Mike Babcock on Nov. 20, added a wrinkle later in the period when he rolled out Matthews, Marner and William Nylander on the same line for two straight shifts at 5-on-5.

NOTES: MacKinnon, now alone in fourth in NHL scoring with 44 points, has goals in five straight games. ... Colorado coach Jared Bednar said captain Gabriel Landeskog, who's been out since Oct. 26 with a lower-body injury, could return Thursday at Montreal. ... Rielly played the 500th game of his career. ... Toronto F Andreas Johnsson left the game with a leg injury after blocking a shot in the second. ... The Maple Leafs lost C Nick Shore to Winnipeg on waivers, while forward Nic Petan and defenseman Martin Marincin were loaned to the AHL's Toronto Marlies - all moves to make room for Marner's return off injured reserve.

Ennis has goal, 2 assists as Senators beat Oilers 5-2
December 4, 2019

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Tyler Ennis had a goal and two assists as the Ottawa Senators beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Artem Anisimov, Connor Brown, Anthony Duclair and Vladislav Namestnikov also scored to help the Senators snap a five-game losing streak. Craig Anderson, returning from a lower-body injury, stopped 24 shots.

Jujhar Khaira and Oscar Klefbom had goals for the Oilers, losers of three of their last four. Mikko Koskinen gave up three goals on 12 shots before leaving in the second period. Mike Smith finished with 11 saves.

Edmonton started the scoring with just under six minutes to play in the first period. Leon Draisaitl made a nice backhand feed in front to Khaira, who scored his sixth of the season. Ottawa challenged the play, believing Sam Gagner was offside, but the goal was confirmed.

The Senators surged into the lead with two goals 12 seconds apart early in the second period.

Ottawa tied it shortly after a power play expired when Anisimov tucked a shot from in tight past Koskinen at 5:15. Then Brown beat Koskinen through the legs with a wrist shot for his first goal in 17 games at 5:27.

Ottawa made it 3-1 on a nice pass from Brown through to Ennis, who scored his eighth of the season with 8:18 remaining in the middle period. The goal chased Koskinen and brought on Smith.

Klefbom beat Anderson on a long power-play shot with 2:23 left to pull the Oilers within one.

The Senators made it 4-2 just 90 seconds into the third as Duclair picked up a wide shot behind the net and tucked it into the net for his 11th.

Ottawa kept the pressure on and was rewarded again with 8:13 left as Namestnikov was left alone in front to score his seventh.

NOTES: Ottawa has won its last six trips to Edmonton. ... Ottawa's Brady Tkachuk played in his 100th NHL game. ... Out with injuries for the Oilers were Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (hand), Zack Kassian (back) and Matt Benning (head), while the Senators were without Cody Goloubef (undisclosed), Scott Sabourin (head) and Christian Wolanin (upper body).

Carlson, Capitals down Kings 3-1 for fifth straight win
December 4, 2019

LOS ANGELES (AP) John Carlson scored twice, Ilya Samsonov stopped 22 shots and the Washington Capitals beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Tom Wilson also had a goal as the Capitals have won five in a row for the second time this season. They won six straight Oct. 25-Nov. 9.

Blake Lizotte had a goal and Jonathan Quick made 19 saves for the Kings, who lost for the third time in their past 10 home games.

Carlson continued his strong start to December by breaking out of his own zone before placing a shot over Quick's right shoulder from the right point to put Washington up 1-0 at 4:36 of the first. It was Carlson's 100th career goal, becoming the fifth Capitals defenseman and the 13th American-born defenseman to reach the century mark.

Carlson made it 2-0 at 13:27, getting Quick to commit too early and scoring around the prone goalie.

The Kings started well before finding themselves trading chances with the Capitals, and Carlson was there to strike for his third multi-goal game and 13th multi-point game in 30 appearances this season.

Los Angeles did dig in to establish the forecheck as the game went on and got to 2-1 at 3:20 of the third. Lizotte charged in off the bench and poked in a loose puck at the near post after Samsonov could not control it behind his own net.

Wilson added an empty-netter at 18:41 to restore a two-goal margin

NOTES: Washington's T.J. Oshie had an assist to extend his point streak to four games. He has one goals and six assists in that span. . The Capitals are 7-0-3 against the Pacific Division. . Lars Eller had an assist for the second straight game. . Capitals C Nicklas Backstrom missed his seventh straight game because of an upper-body injury.

Thursday’s 6-pack

— Purdue 69, Virginia 40— Cavaliers missing Braxton Key is a big deal.

— New Mexico 80, Boise State 78— Lobos win their conference opener.

— San Diego State 79, Colorado State 57— Aztecs, Utah State are best teams in Mountain West.

— Georgetown 81, Oklahoma State 74— Big road win for Patrick Ewing after a tough few days off the floor.

— Yale 61, Albany 52— James Jones wins a game at his alma mater.

— Villanova 80, Penn 69— Final is misleading; this was a pretty close game.

Quote of the Day:
“A lot of times when you’re playing, you have a million different things you’re having to focus in on and you can lose some of the smaller stuff. When you’re out of that [starting] role, you can kind of step back and see the little details. Watching Nick (Foles) was a great opportunity to learn.”
Jaguars’ QB Gardner Minshew

Thursday’s quiz
Who was the Chicago Bears’ coach the last time they played in a Super Bowl?

Wednesday’s quiz
14 Vice-Presidents later became President of the United States.

Tuesday’s quiz
Baltimore Ravens were last Super Bowl champ that wasn’t either the #1 or #2 seed in their conference; they were the #4 seed in AFC when they won Super Bowl XLVII.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…

13) If you’re a Mets’ fan, this could be like Christmas, New Year’s, your birthday and Hannukah, all wrapped into one. This, from ESPN:

“Steve Cohen, a billionaire who owns a small percentage of the Mets, is negotiating an agreement to increase his investment, a move that could signal that Fred/Jeff Wilpon’s longtime control of the franchise will be over within five years.

Bloomberg reported that Cohen is in talks to acquire up to 80% of the team, which would be valued at $2.6B.”

All of this is great news for Mets fans, if it turns out to be true. The Wilpons are horrendous owners; the sooner they’re gone, the better.

12) New Jersey Giants’ QB Daniel Jones has a sprained ankle, is in a walking boot; sounds like Eli Manning will get the nod for Big Blue in their game at Philly Monday nite.

11) DePaul 63, Texas Tech 60 OT— Blue Demons stay unbeaten, but they trailed for most of this game, and Tech played without Ramsey, one of their best guys.

This is DePaul’s first 9-game win streak since the 1993-94 season.

10) Utah 102, BYU 95 OT— Utes outscored BYU 24-13 on foul line, offsetting BYU’s 12-24 shooting on the arc.

9) San Francisco 49ers played in Baltimore LW, are playing in New Orleans this Sunday; they’re practicing this week at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL.

8) South Carolina QB Jake Bentley will transfer after missing almost all of this season with an injury; freshman Ryan Hilinski has played well, so Bentley, a 3-year starter, will finish his college career somewhere else.

7) USC will bring football coach Clay Helton back next year; the promising performance of freshman QB Slovis undoubtedly had a lot to do with that. New coach, new AD, and to be fair, Urban Meyer probably told USC he wasn’t interested in the job.

6) Colorado State fired football coach Mike Bobo, who went 28-35 as coach in Fort Collins.

5) Philadelphia Phillies gave 29-year old P Zack Wheeler a 5-year, $118M deal; Wheeler was 11-8, 3.96 in 31 starts LY, is 44-38, 3.77 in 126 career starts- he’s been hurt a lot.

Wheeler apparently turned down a bigger offer from the White Sox; when guys turn down more money to play somewhere else, thats a pretty big kick in the teeth.

4) Atlanta Braves signed soon-to-be 36-year old lefty P Cole Hamels to a 1-year, $18M deal; Hamels was 7-7, 3.81 in 27 starts for the Cubs last year.

3) Orioles traded 27-year old P Dylan Bundy to the Angels for four minor leaguers. Bundy was 7-14, 4.79 in 30 starts for a dreadful Baltimore team LY.

Angels also made a deal this week to stay in Anaheim thru 2050; the team will buy Angel Stadium and the 133 acres of surrounding land for $325M

2) Miami Marlins acquired IF Jonathan Villar from the Orioles for minor league P Easton Lucas; they also claimed 1B Jesus Aguilar off waivers from Tampa Bay.

1) NC State 69, Wisconsin 54— Badgers lost their last three games, are struggling at 4-4.
