Fabbri scores 2, Red Wings snap 12-game winless streak
December 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) Robby Fabbri scored twice on fortuitous bounces off the same Winnipeg player, and the Detroit Red Wings snapped a 12-game winless streak with a 5-2 victory over the Jets on Thursday night.

Both off Fabbri's goals went in off the body of defenseman Neal Pionk, and it was that kind of night for the Red Wings, who had been 0-10-2 in their previous 12 and had dropped 10 in a row in regulation. Darren Helm, Filip Zadina and Filip Hronek also scored for Detroit.

Kyle Connor scored twice for the Jets.

Helm opened the scoring on a breakaway after a messy sequence of blunders by Winnipeg defenseman Nathan Beaulieu. First, Beaulieu let the puck get past him at the Detroit blue line. Then, after chasing it down in the neutral zone, he let the puck slip away from his control - right into the path of Helm.

While trying to recover, Beaulieu skated right into linesman Greg Devorski, and at that point, Helm was gone. He beat goalie Connor Hellebuyck with a wrist shot to make it 1-0.

Detroit scored on the power play later in the first period when Fabbri's backhanded pass attempt bounced off Pionk's right leg and past Hellebuyck.

The goals were fluky, but the Red Wings fully deserved the lead after outshooting Winnipeg 14-5 in the first. The bounces kept going Detroit's way.

LIGHTNING 3, BRUINS 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Steven Stamkos had two goals to extend his recent tear and Tampa Bay beat suddenly slumping Boston.

Stamkos has scored six times during a four-game goal streak.

Tampa Bay, which had dropped four of five at home, also got a goal from Brayden Point. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves for the win.

Patrice Bergeron and John Moore scored for the Bruins, who have lost four straight in regulation and five in a row overall (0-4-1). Tuukka Rask stopped 28 shots.

The Bruins, coming off an intense 3-2 loss Wednesday night at Washington in a matchup of the NHL's top two teams, hadn't dropped four consecutive games in regulation since March 2017. The five-game losing streak is their longest since an 0-5-0 stretch in March 2016.

ISLANDERS 3, PANTHERS 1

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Devon Toews and Mathew Barzal had power-plays goals in a 3:51 span early in the second period and Thomas Greiss made 32 saves to help New York beat Florida.

The Islanders swept the three-game, regular-season series with the Panthers for the first time since 2013.

Anders Lee added an empty-net goal for New York,

Mike Hoffman scored for Florida, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 27 saves.

PENGUINS 1, BLUE JACKETS 0, OT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryan Rust scored a power-play goal at 3:02 of overtime and Pittsburgh beat Columbus.

Rust controlled a bouncing puck at the top of the crease and fired it past Joonas Korpisalo for the winner and his 10th goal of the year.

Tristan Jarry stopped 17 shots for his third shutout in his last four appearances. Jarry, who has five career shutouts, and three this season, established a franchise-record 177-minute, 15-second shutout streak before the run ended during Tuesday's home loss to Montreal.

Korpisalo, who beat Pittsburgh on Nov. 29, made 31 saves. Columbus has lost four of five and six of nine.

SABRES 4, PREDATORS 3

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jack Eichel had two goals and extended his NHL-leading point streak to 15 games, Victor Oloffson scored in the third period, and Buffalo beat Nashville.

Jimmy Vesey also scored and Linus Ullmark made 36 saves as the Sabres won their third in a row.

Matt Duchene, Colton Sissons and Ryan Johansen had goals for the Predators, who had a two-game win streak snapped. Juuse Saros stopped 28 shots.

BLUES 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Oskar Sundqvist had a goal and an assist as St. Louis beat Vegas.

Mackenzie MacEachern, Jaden Schwartz and Robert Thomas also scored for the Blues, who snapped a three-game skid. Jordan Binnington made 27 saves after getting pulled from his previous start against Toronto last Saturday when he allowed four goals on 11 shots.

Max Pacioretty and William Carrier had the goals for the Golden Knights, who lost for the third time in four games. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 25 shots in his 820th career game, which tied Sean Burke for 14th on the NHL's all-time list.

WILD 6, OILERS 5

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal scored the go-ahead goal with 4:47 remaining in the third period, Ryan Donato scored for the third straight game and Minnesota topped Edmonton.

Jordan Greenway, Jason Zucker, Marcus Foligno and Luke Kunin added goals for Minnesota, which has points in 13 of its past 14 games. Rookie goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen stayed unbeaten in four career games with 28 saves.

Oscar Klefbom, Leon Draisaitl, Gaetan Haas, Connor McDavid and James Neal scored for Edmonton, which is 2-5-1 in its past eight games. Mike Smith stopped 21 shots.

FLAMES 4, MAPLE LEAFS 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Johnny Gaudreau had his first two-goal game of the season and Calgary scored three goals in the first three minutes of the third period, rallying to beat Toronto.

Gaudreau tied it 2-2 just 19 seconds into the third, sending a wrist shot past Frederik Andersen after being set up by Mikael Backlund.

Then, after Michael Frolik's third goal in as many games at 1:59 gave the Flames the lead, Gaudreau scored again.

The three goals came on three consecutive shots.

Travis Hamonic also had a goal for Calgary (18-12-4). Sean Monahan had a pair of assists to extend his point-streak to eight games (5 goals, 5 assists).

The Flames improved to 7-0-0 under interim head coach Geoff Ward and moved into a tie with the Edmonton Oilers for second in the Pacific Division.

Mitch Marner and John Tavares each had a goal and an assist for Toronto (15-14-4). The Leafs fell to 2-1-0 on their four-game trip.

COYOTES 5, BLACKHAWKS 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Clayton Keller scored twice and Pacific Division-leading Arizona beat Chicago.

Vinnie Hinostroza, playing against his former team, assisted on all three of Arizona's first-period goals to match his career high for points in a game.

Michael Grabner and ex-Blackhawk Nick Schmaltz each added a goal for the Coyotes. Christian Dvorak had two assists and Brad Richardson scored his first goal of the season to go with an assist during Arizona's fourth victory in six games.

Jonathan Toews and Dylan Strome, the Coyotes' top draft pick in 2015, scored for the Blackhawks, who lost their third straight.

KINGS 2, DUCKS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jeff Carter and Matt Luff scored, Jonathan Quick made 36 saves and Los Angeles snapped its 11-game road winless skid, beating Anaheim in the second Freeway Faceoff of the season.

Tyler Toffoli had two assists for the last-place Kings, who had been 0-10-1 away from Staples Center since their last road win Oct. 22 in Winnipeg.

With the shortest trip on its schedule kicking off a six-game road swing, Los Angeles improved to 3-12-1 on the road by jumping to an early lead and holding off a third-period surge by the rival Ducks, who have lost eight of 11.

Derek Grant scored a power play goal in the third period and John Gibson stopped 25 shots for the Ducks, who again failed to get their first back-to-back wins since Nov. 1.

The Ducks beat the Kings 4-2 on Dec. 2 in the Southern California clubs' first derby of the season.

Friday’s 6-pack

Too-early 2020 baseball over/under in totals:

— Mariners 66.5

— Cardinals 88.5

— Rays 92.5

— Rangers 75.5

— Blue Jays 73.5

— Nationals 89.5

Quote of the Day:
“The big lesson in life…is never be scared of anyone or anything.”
Frank Sinatra; Thursday would’ve been his 104th birthday

Friday’s quiz
Before this season, who was the only Baltimore Ravens’ QB to throw 30+ TD passes in a season?

Thursday’s quiz
Lamar Jackson played his college football at Louisville.

Wednesday’s quiz
Steve Spurrier coached the Washington Redskins for two seasons.

**********************

Friday’s list of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……..

13) This year, if your college basketball team is making 33.3% of their 3’s, they’re 156th in country. Last year, teams that shot 33.3% on the arc were 225th.

Moving the arc back has created more missed shots; I’m wondering if more long rebounds has resulted in more fast breaks going the other way.

12) Florida Atlantic hired Willie Taggart as its new football coach; FAU will be his 5th head coaching job in 11 years, making him the Larry Brown of college football.

2010-12: Western Kentucky: 16-20, 13-11 Sun Belt
2013-16: South Florida: 24-25, 18-14 AAC
2017: Oregon 7-5, 4-5 Pac-12
2018-19: Florida State 9-12, 6-9 ACC

Total: 56-62, 44-42 conference

11) Apparently Dallas Mavericks’ star Luke Doncic is the best player in the NBA who doesn’t have a shoe contract, which means his bank account will get a lot bigger fairly soon, as all the sneaker companies try to sign him up.

10) Home teams won the first ten Big 14 conference games so far this season; Michigan looked like a damn good team until they went to Louisville/Illinois.

9) The more I think about it, the more I like the 0:08 half court rule that the NBA has; makes a team get into motion a little quicker, not just walk the ball up the court.

8) I’m mystified that Harold Baines is in the Hall of Fame, but Dale Murphy isn’t.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Mets signed P Rick Porcello to a 1-year, $10M contract.
— Bronx re-signed OF Brett Gardner to a 1-year, $12.5m deal.

6) It is December 13 and Yale has already played four OT games this season, winning three of them. Bulldogs won their last six games overall, are 9-3 vs schedule #83.

5) Baseball will have some rules changes this year; a big one for September is the elimination of the 40-man roster. Rosters will be capped at 28 in September.

4) Another rule change will be that relievers having to face 3+ hitters in an appearance; it’ll reduce the often-tedious L-R-L pitching changes that stretch out the end of games.

In exchange for that, rosters all season increase from 25 to 26 players.

3) Handicapping bowl games can be dicey; you don’t know how excited a team or its fans are about their particular matchup. Iowa State sold out of its allotment of tickets for the Camping World Bowl against Notre Dame; safe to say that people in Ames are excited about this game.

2) NBA is putting a G-League team in Mexico City, starting next season. Very high altitude in Mexico City; the Nuggets don’t have a G-League affiliate yet. Maybe they do now.

1) Ravens 42, Jets 21
— Baltimore wins the AFC North.
— Lamar Jackson completed 15 passes, five of them for TD’s.
— Only 8 of Ravens’ 59 plays came on third down.
— Jets scored a TD on aa blocked punt.

Max Pacioretty scores in OT, Golden Knights beat Stars 3-2
December 13, 2019
By The Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) Max Pacioretty scored on a backhander 51 seconds into overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night.

Dallas' Jamie Benn tied it with 5:11 remaining in the third period. He worked a give-and-go, passing from behind the net to Tyler Seguin, then skating into the slot to deflect Seguin's return pass past goalie Malcolm Subban.

Taylor Fedun put the Stars ahead 1-0 in the first period. The Golden Knights took a 2-1 lead in the second on goals by William Karlsson and Chandler Stephenson. Subban made 28 saves for his first victory in three career games against Dallas.

Ben Bishop stopped 28 shots for Dallas. The stars had won three in a row and 10 of 11 home games.

AVALANCHE 3, DEVILS 1

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and an assist to reach 50 points this season and lead Colorado past New Jersey.

Colorado moved back to the top of the Western Conference standings with its eighth win in nine games. The Avalanche's only loss in that stretch came in overtime, giving them a nine-game points streak.

Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin also scored and Pavel Francouz had 37 saves for Colorado. Mirco Mueller scored for the Devils. They are 0-6-1 over their last seven games.

New Jersey pulled forward Taylor Hall from the lineup just before the game for precautionary reasons, the team said. Hall has been the subject of trade rumors of late and was not held out due to injury.

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

13) Personal update: Retina in my right eye detached nine weeks ago today; I had an operation on my right eye October 22- they inserted a gas bubble in the eye, which helps the retina get back where it belongs. Not sure I realized at the time that this is a serious operation.

Went to the eye surgeon yesterday (Friday); the retina has been re-attached, so that is good and the gas bubble is now roughly 80% gone. The bubble is expected to be gone in the next couple of weeks, and then things can get totally back to normal.

12) Thanks for your patience during the last couple months; I’m guessing my proofreading has slipped some. I can see out of the right eye, but can’t really read with it. I’ve tried to reduce any stress in my life, so the bubble will go away faster. Hopefully we’ll get back to picking games when the calendar turns to January- we’ll see.

11) Gerrit Cole’s 9-year contract is the longest any pitcher has gotten since 1976, when the Indians gave Wayne Garland a 10-year, $2.3M deal.

Thats $230,000 a year, for ten years. Was pretty big news way back then, when I was a junior in high school.

Garland went 20-7 for the ’76 Orioles, coming out of nowhere after starting his career 7-11 in his first three seasons. Remember, the Orioles were the better team back then.

Garland went 10-19 for a 74-87 Cleveland team in ’77, making 38 starts, then his career unraveled, going 15-29 in the last four years of his career.

10) Random fact: LSU QB Joe Burrow is older than Lamar Jackson.

9) Topeka, the state capital of Kansas, is offering potential new residents up to $15,000 to move there, providing they purchase or rehabilitate a home, and live and work there for a year.

8) New York Mets reached an agreement on a re-done contract with Yoenis Cespedes, which is expected to lower their 2020 payroll a decent amount. Cespedes didn’t play at all LY because of foot injuries; he’s played a total of 119 games the last three years.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Brewers signed oft-injured P Brett Anderson to a 1-year deal; Anderson was 13-9 LY, his career high in wins.

6) New Jersey Giants released CB Janoris Jenkins, after he refused to apologize for an offensive tweet he sent to a critical fan. In his 8-year career, teams Jenkins played for are a combined 48-77-1, losing their one playoff game (Packers beat Giants 38-13 in ’16 Wild Card game).

5) Actors have to play a variety of roles to have a successful career; Scottish actor Brian Cox has an excellent resume- he is currently the star of HBO’s series Succession, but in 2002 he was the Army father who disliked baseball in the real-life story The Rookie, about a high school science teacher who becomes a major league relief pitcher.

Three years earlier, Cox played the longtime owner of the Detroit Tigers in For Love of the Game, the Kevin Costner movie. Funny seeing the same guy playing such different roles.

4) Bucks 127, Grizzlies 114— Milwaukee has won its last 17 games.

3) Clippers 124, Timberwolves 117— Kawhi Leonard scored 31 in the first half, wound up with 42 points; Paul George scored 46 points for the Clippers. Minnesota lost its 7th home game in a row.

2) Josh Donaldson told his mom that if she quit smoking he’d get her a Maserati; because it is 2019 and everything gets filmed now, they posted the video on Twitter of Donaldson driving up to her house in the car, and then the mom’s (extremely) enthusiastic reaction. Hope the car doesn’t have an ashtray in it.

1) Get well soon to former NBA commissioner David Stern, who had emergency surgery after a brain hemorrhage Thursday. Stern was NBA commish for 30 years; he is 77 now.

THE FLAME REGRESSION

The Calgary Flames (5-0 SU, 4-1 O/U last five) were also one of a handful of NHL teams that sacked their head coach. Calgary has responded by ripping off six straight wins (three as plus-money dogs) and has taken 17 of a possible 18 points in its last nine games. They will entertain the Carolina Hurricanes (3-2 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) on Saturday in what is the second game of a four-game homestand for Calgary.

The Flames have found ways to win but still have let their opponents produce more unblocked shot attempts (measured as Fenwick) over their last eight games and have been “lucky” in regards to stopping high-danger shot chances. Calgary leads the league over the last three weeks in high-danger save percentage at 96 percent (unsustainable; league average is ~82% percent and Calgary sits at 83% on the season) while also scoring 20 percent of its scoring chances (league average is around 12-13%; Calgary sits at 13% on the season).

Add in the fact that Calgary has the 10th-worst penalty kill since November 24 at 78.5 percent and a serious regression may be coming for the West’s No. 6 team. There should be good value in a Carolina ML on Saturday night and we will also be looking at the Hurricanes' team total of 2.5 and hitting the Over.

DEEP DIVE INTO LEAFS’ NUMBERS

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been relying on their goalie Freddy Andersen a lot since new coach Sheldon Keefe took over 10 games ago. Since November 29 the Leafs have been outshot and out-Fenwicked and sit in the Bottom-10 in shots, Corsi and Fenwick against. They are also allowing the fourth-most scoring chances against at nearly 25 a game.

Andersen is having to make nearly 11 high-danger (shots in close) saves a game but is holding his own with an 86% save percentage. During the Leafs’ current road trip, they have been outshot in two of three games while having a higher expected goals against than goals for but have outscored their opponents 11-8.

We are riding the Oilers ML on Saturday night as Andersen has been playing over expectations of late and a date with McDraistl and the league’s best power play could change that.

LOSERS CONVENTION IN MOTOR CITY

Well, the league’s worst losing streaks are finally over and coincidentally both teams that ended their slides on Thursday will meet in Detroit on Sunday night when the L.A. Kings visit the Red Wings. Both teams will be on the back-end of a back-to-back with L.A. traveling from Pittsburgh to Detroit overnight.

The Wings put out the fires of a 12-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets and also ended an 0-8 ATS run. The Wings’ power play went 2-for-4 with the man advantage and has been converting at nearly 30 percent through December which is the fifth-best rate in the league.

The Kings had lost 11 straight road games before Thursday’s 2-1 win in Anaheim. Over those 11 games, the Kings have scored more than two goals just once and saw the Under hit in seven of their last nine.

There is a good chance that both backup goalies play this one but even that doesn’t give us enough confidence in the Over. We do think that the Red Wings have the advantage in special teams, especially with L.A. allowing six power-play goals in its last 20 times shorthanded (most in the league). We are tailing the Red Wings team total Over 3.5 for plus money as it has hit in three of the Kings’ last five road games.

GOALIE PROFILE: PEKKA RINNE, NASHVILLE PREDATORS

The 2017-18 Vezina winner has fallen on tough times of late as Predators goalie Pekka Rinne has a 4.80 goals against over the last seven games and has just two wins. The Finnish keeper has allowed four or more goals in five of those seven games and has had to watch Nashville’s last two games from the bench due to his poor play.

The veteran goalie should respond after a couple of games to collect his thoughts and will take on a traveling Dallas Stars club Saturday that will be on the back-end of a back-to-back. Dallas has scored two goals or less in eight of its last 12 road games while the Predators have scored the second-fewest goals since November 7 and are scoring at under 10 percent on the power play.

We may get a 6 on the total with how badly Rinne has been playing, but are willing to take the Under even at 5.5 in what is a great bounceback spot for an experienced goalie going through a rough patch.

INJURY UPDATE: F TRAVIS KONECNY, PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

The Flyers leading scorer is still out with a concussion and will likely miss Saturday’s game against the Wild in Minnesota. Philly could also be missing another key part of its offense with Oskar Lindblom questionable for the weekend tilt. Lindblom is tied with Konecny for the team-lead in goals and both are major pieces of the Flyers’ power play that went 0-for-2 Wednesday in the first game without both stars.

The Wild have held their opponents to two or fewer goals in four of their last five home games and dodge a bullet with absenses of Konecny and Lindblom as the Wild penalty kill has been near the bottom of the league since November. We are fading the Philadelphia offense and taking the Under on its team total of 2.5.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• The Carolina Hurricanes and the Edmonton Oilers are the only two teams hitting first-period Overs at 80 percent in their last 10 games. Both play on Saturday with Canes facing the Flames (5-5 O/U 1P totals last 10) and the Oilers taking on the Leafs (9-7-1 O/U 1P away this year). The two-teamer would return backers close to a +200 payout.

• The Montreal Canadiens are 9-1 SU versus the Detroit Red Wings over their last ten matchups, including six victories of -1.5 or more. Since 2014, Detroit has come away with a victory in Montreal just three times (twice in OT) in a span of 13 games. Look to grab the Habs Puck Line (-1.5) on Saturday night.

Reimer helps Hurricanes end Flamesâ?? 7-game win streak
December 15, 2019
By The Associated Press

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) James Reimer made 32 stops and Warren Foegele scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes ended Calgary's seven-game winning streak with a 4-0 victory over the Flames on Saturday.

It's the second shutout of the season for Reimer, who has won five of his past six starts and improved to 7-5-0 on the season.

The 31-year-old was at his best in the first and third periods. He kept the game scoreless in the opening 20 minutes, despite Calgary holding a 12-4 edge in shots. When the Flames pressed in the third period, fueled by four power plays in the final 11 minutes, he once again stood tall.

Brock McGinn and Dougie Hamilton also scored for Carolina, which has points in five straight (4-0-1). The Hurricanes' five-game road trip will continue Tuesday in Winnipeg.

Calgary lost for the first time since Geoff Ward took over from Bill Peters behind the bench. The 57-year-old had won his first six games after being named interim head coach on Nov. 29.

ISLANDERS 3, SABRES 2, OT

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Anthony Beauvillier scored in overtime to lift the Islanders over Buffalo, extending New York's home winning streak to six games.

Beauvillier scored on a breakaway at 3:04 against Sabres goalie Linus Ullmark for his 10th goal of the season. He finished off a sequence in overtime in which he accidentally got tangled up with Ullmark in the crease, then was tripped in the Sabres zone before he corralled the puck for the winning play.

The Islanders improved to 13-2-1 overall between Nassau Coliseum and Brooklyn's Barclays Center this season while the Sabres had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Semyon Varmalov made 33 saves for the victory.

Jordan Eberle had snapped a 1-1 tie with a goal early in the third period to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead, but Sabres captain Jack Eichel tied it with a power-play goal at 18:14 after the Sabres pulled Ullmark for an extra skater.

Eichel's 23rd goal of the season was assisted by Rasmus Ristolainen and sent the game into overtime.

DEVILS 2, COYOTES 1

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Kyle Palmieri scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period, and New Jersey held on to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Jesper Boqvist also scored, and Michael McLeod and Miles Wood each had two assists to help the Devils get their first win this month. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 31 shots.

Alex Goligoski scored for Arizona, which has lost five of its last seven home games but remains in sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division. Vinnie Hinostroza picked up his fourth assist in two games, and Darcy Kuemper finished with 31 saves.

Palmieri's team-leading 12th goal of the season came with 8:26 left in the third period as he flipped the puck high into net past Kuemper.

The Devils played without Taylor Hall for the second straight game amid trade talks - with the Coyotes mentioned as one of the teams interested in acquiring the forward.

DUCKS 4, RANGERS 3, SO

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jakob Silfverberg and Ondrej Kase scored in the shootout after Hampus Lindholm tied the game on the power play with 1:46 remaining in the third period and Anaheim rallied for a win over New York.

Silfverberg also had a power-play goal for the Ducks. Erik Gudbranson also scored, and John Gibson stopped three shots in the shootout after making 29 saves through overtime.

Mika Zibanejad had two goals for the second straight game and Artemi Panarin scored for the fourth consecutive game, but the Rangers ended up going 2-1-1 on their four-game road trip.

Henrik Lundqvist made 39 saves, and the Rangers still have not won consecutive games this month.

Lindholm made it 3-all at 18:14 from the high slot just as Gibson was making his way toward the bench for the extra attacker with Brady Skjei in the box for tripping.

SENATORS 4, BLUE JACKETS 3, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Anthony Duclair had a hat trick, including a power-play goal at 1:56 of overtime, and Ottawa topped Columbus.

Duclair has 18 goals on the season, including eight in his past five games.

Connor Brown also scored for the Senators. Anders Nilsson stopped 38 shots.

Alexandre Texier had two third-period goals for the Blue Jackets, who rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime. Cam Atkinson added a first-period goal.

Elvis Merzlikins started the game, but was pulled after the first period where he allowed two goals on eight shots. Joonas Korpisalo came on in relief and allowed two goals on 19 shots.

Nilsson made a couple of fantastic saves in overtime, one on Atkinson and one on Oliver Bjorkstrand.

The Senators led 3-1 going into the third, but the Blue Jackets cut the lead to one four minutes into the third as Texier, from the slot, slid one between Nilsson's pads. Texier tied the game with his second of the game midway through the period.

WILD 4, FLYERS 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Eric Staal scored twice and Minnesota kept up its winning ways at home.

Zach Parise also scored and Carson Soucy added an empty-netter to help the Wild improve to 9-0-3 in the past 12 games at Xcel Energy Center. Only Boston (17) and the New York Islanders (13) have longer home point streaks this season.

The Wild were near the bottom of the league after winning just six of their first 18 games, but they are 10-1-4 in their last 15.

James van Riemsdyk scored and Carter Hart made 24 saves for Philadelphia. The Flyers have dropped three of four after winning five straight and lost back-to-back games for the first time since Oct. 27-29.

BRUINS 4, PANTHERS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - David Pastrnak scored twice to help Boston snap a five-game winless streak.

David Krejci and Jake DeBrusk each had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, and Torey Krug had two assists. Jaroslav Halak stopped 31 shots.

Keith Yandle and Mark Pysyk scored for the Panthers, who lost their third straight. Sergei Bobrovsky made 38 saves, including 21 in the first period.

Florida's Aleksander Barkov had to be helped off the ice by teammates late in the third period with an apparent leg injury after being forced into the boards by Boston's Charlie McAvoy.

STARS 4, PREDATORS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Anton Khudobin stopped 37 shots and Dallas won for the fourth time in five games.

Blake Comeau, Roope Hintz, Jamie Oleksiak and Andrew Cogliano each scored in the second period after the Stars fell behind. Alexander Radulov had two assists.

Austin Watson scored for Nashville and Pekka Rinne finished with 18 saves. The Predators have lost two straight.

This was the first meeting between the teams since the Stars eliminated the Predators in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Nashville on the scoreboard first, as Dan Hamhuis fired a shot from just inside the blue line that was deflected by Watson from the slot at 1:04 of the second period.

PENGUINS 5, KINGS 4, SO

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Bryan Rust scored twice in regulation and got the lone goal in the shootout to lift Pittsburgh.

Rust faked a shot on the forehand and flipped a blocker-side backhander past Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick for the deciding goal. The Kings had a chance to continue the shootout, but the puck rolled off Adrian Kempe's stick, giving the Penguins their fifth win in six games.

Rust, who scored the overtime winner Thursday against Columbus, had a 5-on-3 power-play goal in the second period. Teddy Blueger and Jack Johnson scored third-period goals, while Jake Guentzel and Kris Letang both had three assists. Pittsburgh has points in 17 of its last 22 games, including 13 wins.

Tristan Jarry, who entered the game with three shutouts in his last four appearances, made 38 saves for Pittsburgh.

Tyler Toffoli, Michael Amadio, Kyle Clifford and Austin Wagner scored for the Kings, who have lost six of their last nine. Quick stopped 23 shots.

CAPITALS 5, LIGHTNING 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Lars Eller and Garnet Hathaway scored 44 seconds apart early in the third period as NHL-leading Washington beat Tampa Bay.

Ellers scored from the left circle at 1:58 and Hathaway made it 3-1 from in-close.

Nicklas Backstrom, T.J Oshie and Tom Wilson had the other Washington goals, and rookie goalie Ilya Samsonov stopped 26 shots.

Tampa Bay got goals from Brayden Point and Jan Rutta. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves. The Lightning dropped to 8-7-1 at home, matching the total of losses (32-7-2) from all of last season.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, OILERS 1

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Frederik Andersen stopped 36 shots to help Toronto beat Edmonton.

Alexander Kerfoot had a goal and an assist and Ilya Mikheyev, Frederik Gauthier and Mitch Marner also scored as the Maple Leafs won for the third time in four games.

Alex Chiasson scored for the Oilers, who have lost four in a row. Mikko Koskinen finished with 28 saves.

RED WINGS 2, CANADIENS 1

MONTREAL (AP) - Mike Green scored a power-play goal in the third period, Jonathan Bernier made 42 saves, and Detroit held off Montreal.

Tyler Bertuzzi also scored for the Red Wings, who have won two games in a row since dropping 12 straight. Green also added an assist and his goal was the game-winner when Tomas Tatar scored in the game's final minute for the Canadiens.

Montreal outshot Detroit 43-20 but had its three-game win streak snapped. Carey Price made 18 saves in defeat.

The Red Wings snapped a 12-game winless streak (0-10-2) by beating the Winnipeg Jets 5-2 on Thursday but entered the Bell Centre with the league's worst record and worst offense.

BLUES 4, BLACKHAWKS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Justin Faulk capped a four-goal, third-period rally with a late tally as St. Louis beat Chicago.

St. Louis scored four times in a span of 12:54 to erase a three-goal deficit. Tyler Bozak scored twice and Jacob de la Rose also had a goal to tie it at 3-3. It was the first NHL goal for de la Rose. Jordan Binnington stopped 19 shots.

Brandon Saad scored twice and Patrick Kane also had a goal for Chicago, which led 3-0 early in the third period. Corey Crawford finished with 34 saves.

12) Gonzaga 84, Arizona 80— Zags improve to 11-1 with this impressive road win; they were shaky in last minute though- Arizona outscored them 15-3 in last 1:35, cutting a 16-point lead down to two in last few seconds.

11) Memphis 51, Tennessee 47— Memphis is 2nd-least experienced team in country; they’re going to be really good when they get big man James Wiseman back January 12. This is the kind of win thats gong to improve their seeding in March.

10) Upsets:
— Army (+15.5) 89, Buffalo 76
— Colgate (+12) 67, Cincinnati 66
— Northern Arizona (+7.5) 79, Utah Valley 73
— Memphis (+6) 51, Tennessee 47
— Idaho (+6) 76, Cal-Bakersfield 70 OT

9) Albany 84, Niagara 80— Coach Will Brown wins his 300th game coaching my alma mater; he is a very good guy and a very good coach. Congrats!!!

8) Rutgers 68, Seton Hall 48— Mamukelashvili sat this out; Powell left during game with a concussion, and the Pirates got spanked. Seton Hall is 2-3 in its last five games after a 4-1 start.

7) Boston College hired Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as its new head football coach; Hafley has never been a head coach at any level; he is expected to stay with the Buckeyes thru the playoffs.

6) Wake Forest 80, Xavier 78— Other than Scruggs, Xavier shot 12-35 inside arc as Wake Forest pulls off the upset, ending their 3-game losing skid.

5) Villanova 78, Delaware 70— Blue Hens were 25-10 six years ago, but are 30-60 in CAA games since then; they’re 9-2 so far this year, and figure to move up in CAA standings once conference play starts. This was a one-point game with 13:18 left.

4) BYU 68, Utah State 64— Cougars improve to 9-4 (vs schedule #22) despite being outscored 14-1 on foul line. Two of their four losses came in OT.

3) Liberty 61, Vanderbilt 56— Flames are 12-0 vs schedule #347, but now they have a road win over an SEC school. Teams combined to make 12-47 on arc in this game.

2) Wichita State 80, Oklahoma 75— Shockers avenge LY’s 80-48 loss to Oklahoma. Sooners made 14-31 on arc, led by 8 with 10:41 left, but Wichita was the better team down the stretch.

1) Navy 31, Army 7— Perry ran ball for 304 yards, two TD’s as Middies improved to 10-2. this game stayed under the total for the 14th year in a row.
