SHOOTING STARS

The Dallas Stars are the hottest team in the NHL and have put an incredible 13-1-1 run together since October 19. Over those 15 games, the Stars are 5-10 O/U and have covered the puckline as a favorite in five of their last six.

The Stars will entertain the Vegas Golden Knights (2-3 SU, 1-3-1 O/U last five) on Monday as -125 favorites. This is great value for a team that hasn’t lost at home in November and is facing a team that has dropped four straight on the road.

We love the Dallas ML, lean on the Under 5.5 and wouldn’t disagree with the puckline +195 for the trifecta.

FADING THE FLAMES

Monday’s match between the Calgary Flames (1-4 SU, 0-4-1 O/U last five) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (2-3 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) gives bettors a chance to fade the league’s worst offense. Calgary has just eight goals in their last seven games. Over that stretch, Calgary was shut out three times and now has to face a Pittsburgh team that has the fifth-best penalty killing in November and are allowing just 2.23 goals per game at home this year.

Not everyone enjoys playing hockey Unders, especially at 5.5, but the Flames haven’t hit an Over in seven-straight games while the Pens have held opponents to two or fewer goals in five of their last six. Take the Under 5.5 on this Monday night matchup.

FAMILIAR OPPONENTS

Tuesday will give us a battle of two of the top teams in the Atlantic Division. The Boston Bruins (4-1 SU, 1-4 O/U last five) and Montreal Canadiens (1-4 SU, 4-1 O/U last five) have played each other more than any other two teams in NHL history. The head-to-head matchup over the last two years favors the Bruins 6-3 SU as the road team will get a chance to hand the Habs a fifth-straight loss.

The Bruins seem like the obvious play here but Boston goalie Tukka Rask has had his struggles with Montreal over his career as he is 11-17-4 versus the Canadiens. The Bruins have also allowed teams to score four goals or more in five of their last seven road games.

We are passing on the Habs’ ML but will play the plus-money Over on Montreal’s team total of 3.5.

LAME DUCK

The most penalized team in the league over the last three weeks will take on the Arizona Coyotes (3-2 SU, 1-4 O/U last five) in Anaheim on Wednesday night. The Ducks are shooting themselves in the foot of late averaging over eight minutes of PK time per game. Combine that with their 30th-ranked penalty killing over their last seven games and you can see why Anaheim has won just twice in November (2-8 SU).

The ‘Yotes are playing at a different level than their Wednesday opponents as Arizona has won five of their last eight thanks to great goaltending (92.19 save percentage last three weeks) and a powerplay that is scoring at 20 percent.

Jump on the road team and take Arizona’s ML.

LEAF IT TO KEEFER

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost six-straight games, fired their coach in the middle of a six-game road trip and have responded by going 2-0 SU and 2-0 ATS under new coach Sheldon Keefe. The team will look to keep that positive energy rolling for a road date with the Detroit Red Wings (0-5 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) on Wednesday night.

As of Monday, the Wings are losers of six straight and are coming in with just one goal in their last six periods of hockey. The Leafs have already won in Detroit once this year, a 5-2 win that saw them outshoot the Wings 41-27.

We are riding this reborn Toronto team for another go and taking the Leafs’ puckline -1.5.

GOALIE PROFILE: ANTON KHUDOBIN, DALLAS STARS

The Stars’ “backup” goalie currently sits fourth in the league in goals against at 2.15 and fourth in save percentage at .929. Khudobin has been stellar for the Central’s second-place Stars, winning four of his last five starts and has allowed more than two goals just once since October 22.

The Stars play back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday and we expected Anton to get the start on the back end as he has yet to start in consecutive games this year as Ben Bishop is also playing exceptional. The Stars will visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, a team that Khudobin just beat 2-1 last week making 38 of 39 saves.

We will be backing the Stars Tuesday on the ML as we may get a good number with Dallas on the road and playing the second game of a back-to-back.

INJURY UPDATE: D KRIS LETANG, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

The Penguins could get some big help with the possible return of Kris Letang on Monday versus the Flames. The All-Star defenseman has missed the last eight games but averages 25 minutes of ice time a game (eighth-most in the league) and is 10th in powerplay time per game by defensemen.

Having Letang back on the powerplay could boost a unit that was 23rd in powerplay percentage in his absence. The Flames penalty killing isn’t anything special as they sit 15th in PK percentage.

If Letang suits up, we will play the Over on the Penguins’ team total of 3.5.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• The Calgary Flames are 6-19 O/U on first-period totals, the lowest mark in the league. Over their last ten, they are 2-8 O/U first-period totals. The Flames travel to Pittsburgh (9-13 O/U first-period totals) on Monday night.

• Staying on the first-period totals, Tuesday will see two of the league’s better Over producers when the Boston Bruins visit the Montreal Canadiens. At home, Montreal is 9-2 O/U first-period totals while the Bruins are 7-2 O/U first-period totals on the road.

• The Washington Capitals are 9-2-1 O/U this year at home and will host the Florida Panthers on Wednesday. The Panthers have hit the Over in six of their last seven games and the total has gone Over in four-straight games between these two clubs.

Korpisalo gets 2nd career shutout, Columbus beats Sens 1-0
November 25, 2019
By The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Oliver Bjorkstrand scored 21 seconds into the third period and Joonas Korpisalo earned his second career shutout, lifting the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 1-0 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night.

The win was the fourth in five games for the Blue Jackets (10-9-4) and it marked their fourth straight at home over Ottawa.

Korpisalo stopped 25 shots in his 10th victory. Craig Anderson made 18 saves for the Senators (11-12-1), who had won four in a row.

It was nearly three minutes into the game before Columbus took a shot, and the Blue Jackets put just eight pucks on net through 30 minutes of play.

Zach Werenski had an assist and pushed his point streak to seven games, and Boone Jenner's assist was the 100th of his career.

Ottawa's best scoring chance came when Connor Brown got a 1-on-1 with Korpisalo at 8:36 of the third, but could not beat him.

FLYERS 2, CANUCKS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jakub Voracek scored midway through the third period to lift Philadelphia over Vancouver.

Voracek one-timed Justin Braun's pass off the right post and behind goalie Thatcher Demko. Voracek's sixth of the season and second in two games snapped a 1-1 tie.

Sean Couturier scored his seventh goal for Philadelphia, and Carter Hart stopped 16 shots.

J.T. Miller put Vancouver ahead with his 10th goal midway through the first period, but Demko couldn't make it stand. He made 32 saves.

Vancouver didn't get many scoring chances in the final two periods, but Hart made a pad save on Josh Leivo with 17.4 seconds left in the third.

LIGHTNING 5, SABRES 2

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Cedric Paquette and Ondrej Palat scored short-handed goals 49 seconds apart in the third period and Tampa Bay beat Buffalo.

Paquette had a breakaway goal at 8:17, before Palat made it 5-2 on a 2-on-1 break.

Tampa Bay also got goals from Nikita Kucherov, Mikhail Sergachev and Yanni Gourde. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 28 saves and Palat added two assists.

Sam Reinhart and Jimmy Vesey scored, and Carter Hutton stopped 24 shots for the Sabres, who have lost 10 of 12 (2-8-2).

The Lightning swept a pair of games from the Sabres in Stockholm, Sweden, on Nov. 8-9. Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Lightning are 22-4-2 against Buffalo.

RANGERS 3, WILD 2, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Tony DeAngelo scored 32 seconds into overtime to give New York a victory over Minnesota that moved goalie Henrik Lundqvist into sole possession of fifth place on the NHL career wins.

Chris Kreider tied it for the Rangers on a power-play goal with less than three minutes left in the third period. Brady Skjei scored early and Artemi Panarin had three assists, giving him at least one point in all 11 games New York has won this season.

Zach Parise and Ryan Donato scored for the Wild.

Lundqvist made 26 saves for his 455th win, breaking a tie with Curtis Joseph for fifth place all-time.

PENGUINS 3, FLAMES 2, OT

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Jake Guentzel beat David Rittich on a rush 4:04 into overtime to lift Pittsburgh over Calgary.

Jared McCann scored his ninth goal and Alex Galchenyuk got his first with the Penguins. Both had a goal and an assist, helping Pittsburgh get a point for the 11th time in 13 games - eight of those 13 have gone to overtime.

Tristan Jarry stopped 32 shots and has allowed two goals or fewer in six of seven games.

Dillon Dube scored his first of the season for Calgary and second NHL goal. Sean Monahan added his sixth on a power play as the Flames lost for the seventh time in eight games.

Rittich stopped 35 shots.

PREDATORS 3, BLUES 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Daniel Carr scored the deciding goal in the shootout and Nashville beat St. Louis.

Nick Bonino and Ryan Johansen scored in regulation for Nashville, and Juuse Saros made 23 saves in regulation and overtime for the Predators. Saros stopped three of four shots in the shootout.

The Predators have won two straight, both ends of the home-and-home set with St. Louis.

David Perron and Brayden Schenn scored for St. Louis, which has lost two straight.

In the fourth round of the shootout, Carr skated to his left, and then drifted to the slot where he snapped a quick wrist shot by Blues goaltender Jake Allen. Carr was recalled from Milwaukee of the AHL earlier Monday.

Allen made 37 shots. He stopped two of four in the shootout.

STARS 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2

DALLAS (AP) - Alexander Radulov had two power-play goals, Esa Lindell scored once and helped kill four penalties, and Dallas tied a team record with its seventh straight victory.

Radulov and Lindell staked Ben Bishop to a 2-0 lead in a dominant first period. Bishop made 26 saves for his sixth consecutive win.

Jason Dickinson scored in the second for the Stars, who have won seven in a row five times in a franchise history that dates to 1967 as the Minnesota North Stars.

Shea Theodore and Paul Stastny had the goals for Vegas. Malcolm Subban stopped 25 shots.

John Klingberg had three assists, giving him four in two games since coming off injured reserve.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) All these ex-referees on football telecasts wouldn’t be so bad, if they didn’t constantly blindly congratulate officials on the field for always making good calls, because they don’t always make good calls.

In Sunday’s Dallas-New England game, they called tripping on the Cowboys center in a big spot which was a horrendous call, yet FOX’s Mike Pereira went out of his way to say it was a good call. Troy Aikman called him out on it, which was good.

If they’re not going to be critical when deserved, they shouldn’t be on TV.

12) Detroit Lions wanted to sign journeyman QB Josh Johnson to back up Jeff Driskel with Matthew Stafford injured, but the XFL blocked the deal, since Johnson is already under contract to play for the Los Angeles Wildcats when the new league starts in February.

33-year old Johnson can’t be happy about this; he’s been under contract with 15 different NFL teams in his career. You have to figure the XFL is going to be a lot like the AAF was last winter, as in, light years from NFL quality.

11) Pretty cool moment at a I-AA game in Youngstown over the weekend; senior QB Nathan Mays injured his leg, but he suited up and a couple of his teammates carried him on the field so he could take the last snap of his career in victory formation. Then they carried him off the field, because he couldn’t walk on his own.

For teammates to think so much of a guy that they would do that, it was a good moment.

10) Winnipeg 33, Hamilton 12— Congrats to the Blue Bombers, who won their first Grey Cup title since 1990.

9) Kansas 93, Chaminade 63— This was Bill Walton’s first ESPN broadcast of the season, so I learned something that has nothing to do with basketball.

Because whales are an endangered (and therefore protected) species, the whale population has been growing worldwide, at the rate of roughly 7% each year.

8) NFL favorites are 77-94-5 ATS this season.

7) Ravens 45, Rams 6:
— Ravens won their last seven games, covered last five.
— Baltimore scored a touchdown the first six times they had the ball.

6) Cincinnati Bengals came to their senses and will start Andy Dalton at QB Sunday, after rookie Ryan Finley started the last three games.

5) Cleveland Browns won their last three games after a 2-6 start, are only a game out of the 2nd Wild Card slot in the AFC. Only one team, the 1970 Bengals, made the playoffs after starting a season 2-6.

4) UNLV upset San Jose State 38-35 Saturday, in the last college football game at Sam Boyd Stadium- the Rebels move into brand-new Allegiant Stadium next year.

Hasn’t been a good year for UNLV; they fired coach Tony Sanchez Monday. Also in the Mountain West, New Mexico fired coach Bob Davie Monday.

3) Raptors 101, 76ers 96— Joel Embiid went scoreless for first time in his NBA career, going 0-11 from the floor, 0-3 on foul line in 32:00.

2) Baseball stuff:
— Atlanta Braves gave C Travis d’arnaud a 2-year, $16M contract.
— Tampa Bay Rays replaced d’arnaud with former Seattle catcher Mike Zunino.

1) Oregon Ducks have played 11 football games this year; five of them have come against teams who started freshman quarterbacks.

In the Crease - Week 9
Joe Williams

Star Light, Star Bright

The Dallas Stars have ripped off seven consecutive victories following their 4-2 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday night. As a result of the winning streak the Stars have rocketed up the standings in the Central Division, now just two points back of the defending champ and first-place St. Louis Blues. The Stars are doing it with a nice combination of offense and goaltending, posting 29 goals with just 14 goals allowed during the seven-game run. They're also working on a 12-game point streak, which is now the longest active run since the New York Islanders saw their streak snapped in Anaheim on Monday, 3-0. Ben Bishop has won six straight starts since his last loss Oct. 26, and he has allowed three or fewer goals in past 10 starts dating back to Oct. 14.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Nov. 26

Boston at Montreal:
The Bruins are starting to warm up again, and the rival Canadiens will be there at Bell Centre trying to cool them off in the Original Six battle. Boston will be without Patrice Bergeron, who is sidelined indefinitely due to a lower-body injury. Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price will square off in what could be a lower-scoring game. The 'under' is 5-2-2 in the past nine meetings in Montreal, and the under has connected in seven of the past eight meetings in this series, too. Boston has dominated the series lately, too, going 5-1 in the past six trips to Bell Centre, and 8-3 in the past 11 meetings overall. Another trend points to the B's, too, as the road team has won four of the past five in this series.

Wednesday, Nov. 27

Toronto at Detroit:
The Maple Leafs and Red Wings hook up at Little Caesars Arena in Hockeytown. The Leafs have responded under new head coach Sheldon Keefe, going 2-0 with wins at Arizona and at Colorado since Mike Babcock was dismissed following a 4-2 loss at Vegas on Nov. 19. This will be the second meeting of the season between these teams, as Toronto won 5-2 in Detroit back on Oct. 12, cashing as -200 favorites while narrowly hitting the 'over'. Despite the two-game winning streak on the road, the Leafs are still just 3-7 in the past 10 on the road, and they're 0-4 in the past four against Eastern Conference teams. The Wings haven't been much better, though, going 3-8 in the past 11 at LCA. The Leafs have also dominated their O6 rivals, going just 3-10 in the past 13 meetings, and 2-6 in the previous eight at home.

Carolina at N.Y. Rangers:
The Hurricanes will head to Madison Square Garden looking for some revenge after falling 4-2 on Nov. 7. Henrik Lundqvist stood on his head in that outing, and it came on the second end of a back-to-back situation, which was even more impressive. The Rangers are kryptonite for the Hurricanes. Really, everyone in the Metropolitan Division has been kryptonite to the Canes, as they're on an 0-6 cold streak against divisional foes. The Rangers posted an OT win over the visiting Wild on Monday, and they're 4-1 in the past five at Madison Square Garden. Speaking of kryptonite, MSG has been a house of horrors for Carolina, as they're just 5-21 in the past 26 visits to Manhattan, while going 14-38 in the past 52 battles overall against the Rangers.

Edmonton at Colorado:
The Oilers and Avalanche are set to square off at 10 p.m. ET in the Mile High City. The Oilers are 7-1 in the past eight as an underdog, and 6-1 in the past seven as a road 'dog, so watch this line closely. Edmonton has been red-hot away from home, going 6-2 in the past eight road games overall. The Avalanche are equally hot, going 19-7 in the past 26 at Pepsi Center, and 6-0 in the past six overall against teams with a winning percentage at .600 or better. They're also 15-5 in the past 20 as a home favorite, so something's gotta give. Looking at the head-to-head trends in this series, the arrow points squarely at the Oilers, who are 7-3 in the past 10 meetings, and 4-1 in the past five in Denver. The 'over' is also 5-0-1 in the past six battles in Colorado, so perhaps this kerfuffle will be a high-scoring affair.

Thursday, Nov. 28

New Jersey at Montreal:
The Devils will have to have to trade their turkey and mashed potatoes for a Labatt Blue and a serving of poutine, as they celebrate Thanksgiving north of the border in Montreal. The Habs enter on a 0-2-2 skid heading into Tuesday's game against the B's, including a 4-3 overtime loss at home on Nov. 16 against the Devils when backup goaltender Keith Kinkaid fell against Mac Blackwood. The Habs are in a bad way during their 0-2-2 slide, losing as favorites in each outing, taking a -693 loss if you ate the chalk in each outing. The Devils slapped the brakes on a two-game mini-slide by pushing aside the Red Wings by a 5-1 score on Saturday in Louis Domingue's team debut in the crease. Blackwood is expected to be back in there, however. Heading into Tuesday's game, the Devils are averaging just 2.1 goals per game across the past 10, with the under 5-2-1 across their past eight.

Pastrnak earns 2nd hat trick, Bruins beat Canadiens 8-1
November 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

MONTREAL (AP) David Pastrnak recorded his second hat trick of the season and the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Bruins routed the Montreal Canadiens 8-1 Tuesday night.

Jake Debrusk, Brad Marchand, Anders Bjork, Charlie Coyle and Danon Heinen also scored for the Bruins (16-3-5), who have won four straight.

Marchand, Coyle, David Krejci and Torey Krug had two assists apiece, while Sean Kuraly had three.

Captain Shea Weber scored the only goal for the Canadiens (11-8-5), who have lost five straight.

Bruins backup Jaroslav Halak made 36 saves and improved to 6-0-0 against Carey Price, his former teammate in Montreal.

Price gave up five goals on 11 shots before being pulled in the second period. Keith Kinkaid stopped 10 of 13 shots in relief.

Boston extended its points streak to eight games (5-0-3) and moved ahead of Washington atop the conference standings.

Price gave up six goals on 34 shots to the Rangers and struggled even more against the Bruins, who were without Patrice Bergeron (lower-body injury).

WILD 3, DEVILS 2

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Kaapo Kahkonen made 32 saves in his NHL debut, defenseman Ryan Suter scored the winner early in the third period and suddenly hot Minnesota beat New Jersey in a game the NHL said the Devils got credit for a goal that should not have counted.

Zach Parise and Jordan Greenway also scored as the Wild extended their point-scoring streak to seven games (4-0-3).

Jesper Boqvist scored the disputed goal and Kyle Palmieri tallied on a power play as the Devils continued to alternate good games and bad games. Louis Domingue, making his second straight start, had 26 saves.

On the game-winner, Ryan Hartman won a faceoff and Ryan Donato found Suter in the left circle for a rocket over Domingue 3:00 into the period.

While the Wild were protecting the lead, the NHL issued a statement saying Boqvistâ??s earlier goal should not have counted because the referees failed to uphold a challenge by Wild coach Bruce Boudreau against Wayne Simmonds playing the puck with a high stick before the goal.

BLACKHAWKS 3, STARS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Corey Crawford made 32 saves for Chicagoâ??s first shutout this season and the Blackhawks ended Dallasâ?? seven-game winning streak.

Brandon Saad, Patrick Kane and Connor Murphy scored for Chicago, which snapped a three-game slide. The 34-year-old Crawford was sharp in stopping several prime Dallas chances in his 26th career shutout.

The Blackhawks dealt the surging Stars their first regulation loss since Oct. 26, and ended Dallasâ?? 12-game point streak (11-0-1.)

Anton Khudobin blocked 35 shots.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Interesting college football games this week:

— Ole Miss @ Mississippi State (-2.5)

— Virginia Tech (-2.5) @ Virginia

— Iowa (-5) @ Nebraska

— Washington State @ Washington (-7)

— Wake Forest (-4) @ Syracuse

— Iowa State (-5) @ Kansas State

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……

13) Stephen F Austin 85, Duke 83 OT— March Madness comes 100 days early. Really a great game and a shocking upset; Duke was a 27.5-point favorite.

Duke was 24-40 on the foul line, SFA 11-17; Lumberjacks were +6 (20-14) in turnovers. This was Duke’s first non-conference home loss since a 2000 game against St John’s. 19 years.

12) ESPN had to be hoping for a Kansas-UCLA semifinal in the Maui Classic, and then the winner playing Michigan State in the final; problem is, Michigan State/UC:A both got beat in the first round, meaning they’ll play in the 5th place game on Wednesday instead.

Big week of national TV exposure for Dayton, which whacked Georgia, Virginia Tech the last two days, and now gets a primetime game with Kansas in the Maui finals.

11) Michigan State 93, Georgia 85— Spartans were up 61-33 with 16:26 left to play, but Georgia stormed back and got within a hoop behind Anthony Edwards, who scored 33 of his 37 points in the second half.

Michigan State’s Cassius Winston is the first college basketball player since 2006 to make 1st team All-American one year and then return to college the next year (JJ Redick).

10) Pittsburgh beat Kansas State 63-59 Monday night; Pitt was 18-21 on foul line, Wildcats were only 3-13. Big difference. Oddly, K-State was 10-20 on the arc, Panthers 1-16. Wildcats were also +7 in turnovers (21-14) but they shot only 34.2% inside the arc.

9) Cleveland Browns are favored by two points in Pittsburgh this week; last time the Browns were favored in the Steel City was 1989, before the old Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens.

Steelers made it official Tuesday; 3rd-stringer Devlin Hodges starts at QB this week.

8) Northwestern has a basketball player named Pat Spencer who is a grad transfer from Loyola, MD, where he was the best college lacrosse player in the country last year. Spencer scored 9 ppg in the Wildcats’ first five games this season.

7) Good movie/TV trivia: Actress Kerris Dorsey plays the daughter in the great Showtime series Ray Donovan; she also played Billy Beane’s daughter in Moneyball.

6) Colorado 71, Clemson 67— Buffaloes rally in 2nd half to win tourney at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas; Pac-12 is an improved league (57-14 out of conference) so far this month.

5) Arizona State 67, Princeton 65— Sun Devils outscored Princeton 13-5 over the final 5:29 to pull out this road win. Princeton shot 64.5% inside the arc against ASU.

4) 49ers are a 6-point underdog in Baltimore Sunday, the first 10-1 team to be an underdog of 6+ points since 2007, when the Packers (+7) lost 37-27 in Dallas.

3) Arizona Diamondbacks signed lefty-hitting catcher Stephen Vogt to a 1-year deal, as catchers keep coming off the market.

2) There are 78 available slots for bowl games this year; right now, only 73 teams are bowl eligible, with 10 more teams having a shot at getting to 6-6 this week (Ohio U got to 6-6 Tuesday night). If five of those teams don’t win this week, then teams with a 5-7 record will be “rewarded” with a bowl appearance.

Not great.

1) UCLA 74, Chaminade 48— Chaminade’s mascot is a silversword, which is a flowering plant endemic to Hawaiʻi that grows on volcanic cinder.

Sundqvist scores twice, Blues beat Lightning 4-3
November 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Oskar Sundqvist had two goals before leaving with an injury, and the St. Louis Blues beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Zach Sanford and Brayden Schenn scored in the third period and Jordan Binnington stopped 32 shots for the defending Stanley Cup champions. Ivan Barbashev had three assists after going six games without a point.

Sundqvist left in the second with a lower-body injury.

Tampa Bay got goals from Nikita Kucherov, Anthony Cirelli and Brayden Point. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 29 saves.

After Sanford scored the tiebreaker from the right circle at 8:21 of the third, Schenn made it 4-2 at 11:07 on the power play shortly after a 5-on-3 ended.

FLAMES 3, SABRES 2, OT

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Elias Lindholm scored on a wraparound 1:17 into overtime to lift Calgary over Buffalo.

Matthew Tkachuk had a goal and set up the winner for the Flames, still playing without embattled coach Bill Peters. TJ Brodie also had a goal and an assist, and David Rittich stopped 34 shots as Calgary improved to 2-0-1 in its past three games, and with associate coach Geoff Ward behind the bench.

Peters has been accused of using racists slurs against a Nigerian-born player 10 years ago while the two were in the minors with the Chicago Blackhawks. Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour on Wednesday backed another former player's allegation that Peters kicked and punched players on the bench during his time as Carolina coach.

Peters acknowledged using offensive language in dealing with forward Akim Aliu in writing a letter of apology addressed to Flames general manager Brad Treliving, and obtained by TSN, a Canadian sports cable network.

Without specifically referencing the words he used, Peters wrote his comments to Aliu were the source of both anger and disappointment in the letter posted on Twitter during the third period. Peters added the incident was made in a moment of frustration and did not reflect his personal values.

Peters said he regretted the incident and apologized to anyone negatively affected by it.

The letter was released while Peters is away from the team as the Flames and the NHL conduct an investigation into the matter.

Jimmy Vesey and Victor Olofsson scored for the Sabres, who dropped to 2-8-3 in their past 13 games - and after starting the season 9-2-1. Linus Ullmark made 26 saves.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4, PREDATORS 3, OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Max Pacioretty tied it with less than a second left in regulation and Paul Stastny scored at 1:52 of overtime to give Vegas a comeback victory over Nashville.

Mark Stone, Reilly Smith and Pacioretty each had a goal and an assist for the Golden Knights, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Malcolm Subban made 31 saves for his first win of the season.

Mikael Granlund and Matt Duchene both contributed a goal and an assist for the Predators. Ryan Ellis also scored and Roman Josi added two assists.

In overtime, Nate Schmidt intercepted Calle Jarnkrok's pass and went in on a 2-on-0 break on Nashville goalie Juuse Saros. Schmidt fed a cross-ice pass to Stastny, who buried a one-timer for the winner.

RANGERS 3, HURRICANES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Adam Fox had a goal and an assist, Henrik Lundqvist stopped 41 shots and New York held off Carolina.

Mika Zibanejad scored in his return after missing 13 games with an upper body injury. Brendan Smith also had a goal and Artemi Panarin added two assists to help the Rangers build a 3-0 lead in the first period and improve to 9-4-1 in their last 14 games.

Panarin has at least one point in 15 of the last 16 games.

Ryan Dzingel and Warren Foegele scored for the Hurricanes, who had won two straight. Petr Mrazek finished with 22 saves.

MAPLE LEAFS 6, RED WINGS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Andreas Johnsson had two goals and an assist, and Toronto routed skidding Detroit for its third straight win under new coach Sheldon Keefe.

Frederik Andersen made 25 saves for his 17th career shutout.

Tyson Barrie and William Nylander each had a goal and an assist. John Tavares and Travis Dermott also scored, and Ilya Mikheyev and Morgan Rielly added two assists apiece.

Detroit has lost seven straight (0-5-2) and was shut out for the second consecutive game. The Red Wings have not scored in 156:28 and have allowed 13 straight goals since Taro Hirose scored in the second period of Saturday's 5-1 loss to New Jersey.

Jimmy Howard made eight saves for Detroit before limping off the ice with trainer Piet Van Zant after Tavares' goal halfway through the first period made it 3-0. Backup goalie Jonathan Bernier was not on the bench because he was ill, but took over for Howard after a delay that lasted more than five minutes. Bernier finished with 40 saves.

The Maple Leafs led 2-0 before the game was three minutes old.

PENGUINS 8, CANUCKS 6

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kris Letang capped a wild comeback, scoring the deciding goal with 3:06 to play, and Pittsburgh rallied with six goals in the third period to beat Vancouver.

Letang's slap shot from the right circle beat Thatcher Demko, completing the Penguins' comeback from a 6-3 deficit.

Evgeni Malkin scored twice and had three assists, and Jake Guentzel had two goals and two assists. Guentzel, on a three-game scoring streak, has 14 goals this season and six goals and 12 points during a six-game point streak.

Bryan Rust had a power-play goal and three assists, and Dominik Kahun and Zach Aston-Reese also scored for Pittsburgh, which extended its point streak to seven games.

Tristan Jarry stopped six shots in relief of Matt Murray, who made 10 saves in two periods.

Elias Pettersson scored his 11th of the season and his goal in eight games for Vancouver. J.T Miller and Adam Gaudette each had two goals and Jake Virtanen scored his seventh for the Canucks, who have three wins in their last 12 games. Demko made 32 saves.

BRUINS 2, SENATORS 1

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Zdeno Chara broke a tie midway through the third period in Boston's victory over Ottawa.

Brad Marchand also scored and Tuukka Rask made 33 saves. The Bruins have won five straight and 10 in a row against the Senators.

Thomas Chabot scored for Ottawa, and Anders Nilsson stopped 19 shots. The Senators had won five in a row at home.

Marchand tied it at 5:15 of the third with his 18th goal and Chara gave the Bruins the lead at 8:45.

Ottawa has lost back-to-back games after winning three straight.

CAPITALS 4, PANTHERS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Lars Eller broke a third-period tie and Washington defeated Florida to stop a two-game skid despite posting a season-low 20 shots.

Braden Holtby made 37 saves for Washington, including one while he played without a stick just moments before Eller gave the Capitals the lead on the other end.

Alex Ovechkin added his team-leading 16th goal in the first period for the Metropolitan Division leaders, who have yet to lose three straight this season.

Richard Panik also scored and Brendan Leipsic added an insurance goal in the third period that proved to be the game-winner.

Brett Connolly scored his team-leading 12th goal for Florida in his return against his former team, but the Panthers sank to a third consecutive loss.

Vincent Trochek scored and had an assist, and Mike Hoffman added his 10th goal in the Panthers' second one-goal loss to the Capitals this season.

Keith Yandle picked up two assists while Alexsander Barkov got his team-leading 23rd. Sergei Bobrovsky made 16 stops in defeat.

FLYERS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Claude Giroux scored on Philadelphia's fifth power play in a 3-2 victory over Columbus.

Scott Laughton had his first goal after a 13-game absence due to a broken finger, and Tyler Pitlick also scored to help the Flyers win their second straight and beat the Blue Jackets on the road for just the second time in 15 visits. Brian Elliott stopped 27 shots.

Nick Foligno and Seth Jones scored for Columbus. Joonas Korpisalo had 20 saves.

Philadelphia was shut down on its first four power plays before Sony Milano's interference penalty gave the Flyers another chance with 4:45 left in the second period.

Quote of the Day
“My family and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to join the Pittsburgh community and are humbled to be a part of this storied franchise. One of the most exciting things for me during the interview process was just how evident the passion for Pittsburgh and the desire to succeed was with everyone I interacted with.”
Derek Shelton, new manager of the Pirates

Thursday’s List of 13: Happy Thanksgiving, everyone……

13) Was going to do a list of things I’m thankful for, but decided that this year, the biggest thing I’m thankful for is that the guy who operated on my detached retina studied a lot in school and became an excellent surgeon. Thank you very much, Dr Mallick!!!!

12) Kansas 90, Dayton 84 OT— Jayhawks win Maui Classic for third time in an exciting final; Dayton tied the game on a 3-pointer with 0:01.1 left in regulation.

11) Michigan State 75, UCLA 63— Bruins go to Maui after losing at home to Hofstra and get one win, over D-II Chaminade, so they’ve lost their last three D-I games. UCLA is playing tempo #308; their fans aren’t going to like coach Mick Cronin any more than they liked Ben Howland or Steve Alford or Steve Lavin.

Howland got fired by UCLA after a 3-year stretch where they went 37-17 in Pac-12 games, but only 1-2 in NCAA tournament games. Tough crowd.

10) Over the last five seasons, 17 different college basketball teams have made the Final Four, from nine different conferences.

Over the last seven NCAA tournaments, at last one team made the Final Four that was a #5 or lower seed in their region.

9) Padres/Brewers made a 4-player trade Wednesday:
Milwaukee gets: IF Luis Urias, P Eric Lauer
San Diego gets: OF Trent Grisham, P Zach Davies.

8) Pirates filled the last open manager’s spot by hiring 49-year old Derek Shelton as their new skipper. Shelton was Minnesota’s bench coach the last two years.

7) Texas Rangers signed P Kyle Gibson to a 3-year deal worth $30M. 32-year old Gibson was 13-7, 4.84 ERA with a 1.44 WHIP LY, with 160 strikeouts in 160 IP. Rangers move into their new domed stadium this coming season.

6) Ole Miss 74, Penn State 72— Rebels trailed 52-31 wth 16:23 left, by 14 wth 6:30 left- they rally to win their fifth game in six tries. Penn State won their last game by a hoop after trailing by 16 with 9:12 left- they returned the favor here.

5) The Cleveland Indians’ baseball cap that Charlie Sheen wore in the 1988 movie Major League is on the auction block; the largest bid, with eight days left to go in the auction, is $4,594.

You could get a hat just like it for $40 on the Lids website, but someone bid $4,594 for a 31-year old baseball cap that might not even be your size. Go figure.

4) Lakers 114, Pelicans 110— Anthony Davis scored 41 points in his return to New Orleans.

3) Detroit Lions are starting rookie 3rd-string QB David Blough against the Bears today. He wasn’t drafted, but Blough played in 44 games at Purdue, throwing 1,429 passes.

2) 76ers 97, Kings 91— Embiid scored 33 points, had 16 rebounds, after not scoring in his last game, in Toronto.

1) Sad to report that the Arena Football League went out of business Wednesday; they had a team here in Albany in the late 90’s, and again the last couple years. Arenaball was great fun; thought it helped develop quarterbacks, because they had to make quick decisions, and really couldn’t run much.
