Kane, Dach lead Blackhawks past Sabres 4-1
November 17, 2019

CHICAGO (AP) Patrick Kane extended his goal-scoring streak to six games, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 on Sunday night for their fourth straight victory.

Kirby Dach scored twice as the resurgent Blackhawks improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight games. Jonathan Toews added his fourth of the season, and Corey Crawford made 33 saves.

Kane won a battle with Buffalo defenseman Marco Scandella for a loose puck during a third-period power play, and then beat Carter Hutton on the glove side for his team-best 11th goal. The star forward has eight goals and nine assists during a nine-game point streak.

Jack Eichel scored his fifth goal in two days, but banged-up Buffalo lost for the seventh time in eight games. Eichel had four goals in the Sabres' 4-2 victory over Ottawa on Saturday.

Buffalo played without forward Kyle Okposo, who left the win against the Senators with a possible head injury. Okposo accidentally collided with Senators defenseman Ron Hainsey after he got on the ice for a line change.

''It's the type of injury that just needs a little space,'' coach Ralph Krueger said. ''We'll know more for sure by tomorrow.''

Okposo was sidelined for part of last season after he was diagnosed with his third concussion in less than three years.

Buffalo also has lost Vladimir Sobotka, Marcus Johansson and Johan Larsson to injuries this month.

The 18-year-old Dach got each of his goals on the backhand side. It was the first career multigoal game for the rookie, who was selected by Chicago with the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft.

Dach's shot from the left circle in the first went off the stick of a backchecking Eichel and fluttered over Hutton. He made it 2-0 in the second when he flipped a slick backhand into the net at 12:32 for his fifth goal in 14 games this season.

NOTES: F Tage Thompson made his season debut for Buffalo, replacing Okposo in the lineup. Thompson was recalled from Rochester of the AHL. ... D Henri Jokiharju was back in Chicago after he was traded to Buffalo in July for F Alex Nylander. The 20-year-old Jokiharju was selected by the Blackhawks in the first round of the 2017 draft, but he fell out of favor with the club after Jeremy Colliton took over as coach last season. ''I think it's a little bit how the coach sees you as a player and as a person,'' Jokiharju said, ''so I think that was one of the issues in here.'' ... Blackhawks D Brent Seabrook skated in his 1,100th NHL game.

Hathaway tossed for spitting during fight, Caps top Ducks
November 19, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Alex Ovechkin scored a power-play goal, Garnet Hathaway was ejected for spitting during a heated brawl and the Washington Capitals beat the Anaheim Ducks 5-2 in feisty matchup Monday night.

Hathaway was given a match penalty and thrown out for spitting on Anaheim's Erik Gudbranson in the latter stages of a fracas between the teams late in the second period. Even after the game misconduct that's automatic for spitting, Hathaway could face more discipline from the NHL office in the form of a fine or suspension.

After some off-and-on hostilities in the first 39 minutes, Washington's Brendan Leipsic incited the brawl by bulldozing Anaheim's Derek Grant just before Chandler Stephenson scored to make it 3-0 Capitals. Almost all 10 skaters on the ice got involved, and Hathaway fought Gudbranson, Grant and Nick Ritchie in a matter of minutes.

Officials were attempting to separate players when Gudbranson rabbit-punched Hathaway, who then spit in his face with referee Peter MacDougall a few feet away.

Gudbranson, fellow Ducks defenseman Brendan Guhle, Ritchie and Leipsic were also penalized for their roles in the ruckus that took referees significant time to sort out. A total of 50 penalty minutes were handed out as Hathaway was sent off, Gudbranson was given a 10-minute misconduct and Anaheim came up empty on its ensuing power play in the third before Jakub Vrana added a fourth goal for Washington.

The brawl overshadowed the NHL-leading Capitals picking up at least one point for the 14th time in 15 games.

Richard Panik's goal 50 seconds in was his first point in 13 games since signing with Washington. Braden Holtby made 32 saves for the win.

Ducks goaltender John Gibson had several spectacular saves to keep his team in the game. Anaheim got third-period goals from Sam Steel and Nicolas Deslauriers.

COYOTES 3, KINGS 0

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Conor Garland had a goal and an assist, Antti Raanta stopped 31 shots and Arizona beat Los Angeles.

Derek Stepan and Jakob Chychrun also scored, and Christian Dvorak and Nick Schmaltz had two assists apiece as the Coyotes won their fourth in five games. Schmaltz raised his point total to a team-high 18.

Raanta and Darcy Kuemper became the first goaltending tandem to post back-to-back shutouts for the Coyotes. Kuemper held Calgary scoreless Saturday night.

Raanta denied a breakaway attempt by Austin Wagner with 10:32 to play. Jack Campbell made 24 saves for Los Angeles, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Some of this weekend’s interesting college football games:

— Michigan (-8.5) @ Indiana

— Kansas State @ Texas Tech (-2.5)

— Duke @ Wake Forest (-7)

— Oklahoma State (-7) @ West Virginia

— UCLA @ USC (-13.5)

— California @ Stanford (-3)

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) Quarterbacks taken in first round of 2017 NFL Draft:
pick #2— Mitch Trubisky, Bears
#10— Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs
#12— Deshaun Watson, Texans

12) Not to beat a dead horse, but Chicago traded up to get from the 3rd pick to the 2nd pick; here is what they gave San Francisco to get the #2 pick:
— #3 pick in 1st round of 2017 draft.
— 3rd and 4th round picks in 2017 draft.
— 3rd round pick in 2018 draft.

11) Chiefs 24, Chargers 17:
— Chargers outgained KC 312-109 in first half, but trailed 10-9 at halftime.
— Chargers scored only 13 points on four red zone trips.
— Rivers threw seven INT’s in last two games; maybe it wasn’t Ken Whisenhunt’s fault.

10) In their last four games, New England has won field position by 13-11-15-14 yards; because they win the turnover battle and have better special teams, they play on a shorter field than their opponents do.

In their last six games, Patriots outscored opponents 69-26 in the 2nd half, giving up 20 of those 26 points in their 37-20 loss at Baltimore.

9) Kentucky 82, Utah Valley 74— Wildcats are struggling with their defense early on. Luckily in this game, they outscored Utah Valley 31-11 on foul line- they made only 1-12 on the arc.

8) SMU 59, Evansville 57— Last week the Purple Aces beat Kentucky as a 25-point underdog; they lost this game at home to SMU.

7) Dallas 117, San Antonio 110— Spurs are 5-9; they lost their last six games, and 8 of last 9.

6) Houston 132, Portland 108— Rockets won/covered their last eight games.

5) Clippers 90, Thunder 88— Kawhi Leonard missed his 3rd straight game, his fifth game this season; he played in 69 of 182 games the last two seasons, but led Toronto to an NBA title LY.

Clippers owe Leonard $103,147,300 over the next three seasons.

Paul George scored 18 points in 29:00 against his old team.

4) The Disney+ app had over 10 million signups in its first week; I’m not big on animated movies, so doubtful I’ll get it, but they’re making a lot of money with it.

3) A Maryland high school teacher is facing assault charges following a fight with a 17-year-old student that was caught on camera; both combatants are females.

2) When Cleveland Cavaliers played the Knicks last nite, they were the last team NBA this year to play on consecutive nights; Nashville Predators are only NHL team that hasn’t played games on back/back nights yet this season.

1) In case you were wondering, the last NFL team that didn’t punt in consecutive games were the 2004 Steelers, who did it in Weeks 15-16 that year, in wins the Giants/Ravens. ’04 Steelers went 15-1, but lost the AFC title game.

Coyote Not-So-Ugly

The Arizona Coyotes posted a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night, as Antti Raanta posted the shutout over Jonathan Quick and the visitors. It was the second straight 3-0 shutout win for the Coyotes, as they also extinguished the Calgary Flames behind Darcy Kuemper. The tidy goaltending is needed, as the offense has been struggling lately. Arizona is averaging just 2.73 goals per game, and they're yielding just 2.1 goals per game allowed over the past 10. Needless to say, the 'under' has been a frequent happening for the Coyotes, going 4-0-0 in the past four outings, and 9-3-0 across the past 12 outings.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Nov. 19

N.Y. Islanders at Pittsburgh:
These rivals meet in the Steel City, and that's usually bad news for the red-hot Islanders. They're just 12-31 their past 43 trips to Pittsburgh. The last time these two teams hooked up on the Island, the Pens won 4-3 in overtime to snap a 10-game winning streak by the Islanders. The Penguins have been a little bit up and down lately, as they just emasculated the Maple Leafs 6-1, but that comes on the heels of two losses in the New York City Metro area where they scored just three total goals against the Devils and Rangers in two losses. They have been much more prolific at home, averaging 4.3 goals per game across the past four at home. The Isles have lost just once in the past 14 games, that OT setback to the Pens, dating back to Oct. 11 in Carolina.

Edmonton at San Jose:
These two teams just met on Nov. 12 at SAP Center in San Jose, and it was the Sharks coming away with a 6-3 victory behind Martin Jones. The Oilers have been playing a lot of end-to-end hockey lately, as their past four games have seen a total of eight goals. The Oilers are averaging 4.8 goals per game, while they're allowing 3.8 goals outing during the four-game span. The key to the success of the Oilers has been their strength on the power play, as they're hitting at a 31.8-percent clip, tops in the NHL. They're also sixth in the NHL, allowing just 2.7 goals per game while ranking third on the penalty kill. None of that worked last time they were in San Jose, however. The Oilers have lost the past five meetings in this series, and they're just 1-4 in the past five trips to the Bay Area. The 'over' has hit in nine of the past 10 meetings in this series, too.

Wednesday, Nov. 20

Washington at N.Y. Rangers:
The Capitals invade Madison Square Garden in one of just two games in a late NHL slate. The Capitals have been steady everywhere, but especially on the road. They have rattled off five straight road outings, and they're 4-0 in the past four away games against teams with a losing road record. The Caps have also taken 16 of the past 23 against Metropolitan Division foes. The Caps have dominated the Blueshirts over the past couple of seasons, too, winning 10 of the past 11 meetings, while going 4-1 in the past five trips to MSG. The under is 4-1-1 in the past six battles in Manhattan, too. The Capitals won all four regular-season games, but three of them were decided by one goal, with two of those outings going to overtime and one to a shootout. In the low meeting between Henrik Lundqvist and Braden Holtby last season, the Caps won 4-3 in OT.

Thursday, Nov. 21

Philadelphia at Carolina:
Look for me and my son on television, as I'll be attending this game as a dad and fan as the undercard to my game at 11p.m. in Hillsborough, N.C. The Hurricanes will be looking to exact a little revenge on the Flyers, who beat down Carolina by a 4-1 score in the City of Brotherly Love on Nov. 5 as Carter Hart outdueled Petr Mrazek. The Hurricanes and Mrazek played fairly well in the first 40 minutes, but the Fly Guys posted three goals by Travis Konecny, Joel Farabee and Claude Giroux in the third period to pull away. One of their goals came on the power play, too. That's been an area of concern for the Hurricanes, as they're a rather middling 83.3 percent, or 12th in the NHL, on the kill. They're also 15th in the NHL with 3.0 goals per game allowed. Offensively, the Canes are averaging 3.5 goals per game to rank eighth, and they're sixth on the power play, converting at 23.8 percent. The Flyers are 16th on the power play, and seventh on the kill, and they're ninth in goals against with just 2.8 per game allowed.

San Jose at Vegas:
The Sharks are hoping that the third time is a charm. They opened the season in a home-and-home against the Golden Knights, and Vegas outscored San Jose by a 9-2 score behind Marc-Andre Fleury for a pair of wins by the Golden Knights. The 'under' connected in both of the outings thanks to San Jose's toothless attack on offense. In recent years this has become one of the better new rivalries in the Western Conference. San Jose hopes that their improved offense of late will help them get a little revenge against Vegas. The Sharks have totaled 27 goals during their six-game winning streak from Nov. 5-16, hitting the 'over' in four of the past five games heading into Tuesday's battle against the Oilers.

Friday, Oct. 22

N.Y. Rangers at Ottawa:
The Senators might have played their most complete game of the season in a Nov. 4 victory against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, and don't think the Blueshirts have forgotten about that setback. The memory of a hockey player is lengthy. The Senators were exacting revenge for a 4-1 setback in Canada's capital city against the Rangers back on Oct. 5, and now it's New York's chance for redemption. The road team has won three straight in this series since the Senators won on home ice Nov. 29, 2018 against the Rangers. The 'under' has connected in seven of the past nine meeting in this series dating back to Dec. 27, 2016.

TWO LOSING TEAMS COLLIDE

The Toronto Maple Leafs (0-5 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) will play the second game of a six-game road trip in Vegas on Tuesday as they take on the equally struggling Golden Knights (1-4 SU, 3-2 O/U last five). Toronto comes in losers of five straight while the Knights recently ended a five-game losing streak of their own on Sunday as they beat the Flames 6-0.

No team has given up more goals in their last five games than the Leafs. Mike Babcock’s team is giving up nearly five goals a game and their penalty killing has been the third-worst unit over the last month.

Vegas is averaging under three goals a game on the year but are scoring 3.7 at home. The Knights are also third-last in high danger shooting percentage, a number that should progress to the mean going forward, helping the Knights put up more points.

Toronto leads the league in goals against in the first period and is being outscored 11-1 in the first frame over their current losing streak. We like the Knights first-period ML and the Over at 6.5.

CHICAGO HEATING UP

The Blackhawks (4-1 SU, 3-2 O/U last five) struggled to put up points out of the gates this year. Through the opening month, they were dead last in goals per game at 2.3. However, flipping the calendar has done wonders for the club as they now lead the league in goals for in November at four per game.

On top of scoring at such a high rate this month, Chicago is also fourth in the league in high danger chances against. This will only help Over backers on Tuesday when the Blackhawks host the Carolina Hurricanes (3-2 SU, 4-1 O/U last five). Combined, these two are 10-6 O/U in November as Carolina is also scoring 3.7 goals in their last 10.

Take the Over 6.5 on this Tuesday tilt.

JACK THE SNIPER

Buffalo’s Jack Eichel has been on a tear since the Global Series. The man picked after Connor McDavid has scored all five of the Sabres’ goals over the weekend and has six in his last four games — all at even strength. On Tuesday, he will face a Minnesota Wild team that has given up 18 goals in their last five games.

The Buffalo captain hasn’t played against the Wild very often but does have two goals and five assists with 26 shots in his six games against Minnesota. Take Eichel’s anytime goal scoring prop and if you’re feeling lucky, take his 2+ goal prop for a big win on one of the league’s hottest players.

GETTING MASSACRED IN MONTREAL

The Ottawa Senators (3-2 SU, 1-4 O/U) will try to snap their losing trends to the Canadiens when they travel to Montreal on Wednesday. The Habs (3-2 SU, 2-3 O/U last five) have dominated the Sens, having won the last five matches as well as nine straight at home dating back three seasons.

Montreal has gotten a point in six straight games, winning four. The Canadiens' special teams hasn’t been special by any means this month but the play of their goaltenders has helped them move into second place in the Atlantic Division. Netminder Carey Price has won three straight starts with a strong .921 save percentage over the last two weeks.

We are taking the Canadiens’ puckline -1.5 as the Sens have allowed their opponents to cover in six of their 10 road games.

GOALIE PROFILE: BRADEN HOLTBY, WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Washington Capitals are 8-1-1 in their last 10 and sit atop the Eastern Conference. A lot of that has to do with the play of Braden Holtby. The Caps netminder was pulled in a game on October 14 after allowing three goal on three shots but 9-0-1 with a .924 save percentage since then. That only loss coming in overtime to Connor McDavid and the Oilers.

Washington plays on Wednesday against the Rangers and we wouldn’t be surprised if Holtby played both as the Caps have sent backup Ilya Samsonov to the minors.

Feel free to ride the hot Capitals this week with 3-way ML and/or puck line plays versus the Ducks and the Rangers.

INJURY UPDATE: F MATT CALVERT, COLORADO AVALANCHE

Hockey players are as tough as they come, but Matt Calvert paid a huge price for blocking a shot on Saturday’s game against the Canucks. As the forward lay on the ice, bleeding out of his head, the referees allowed play to carry on and the Canucks scored the 4-3 goal and would later tie the game up.

The injury leaves a shorthanded Avs team even more depleted as Calvert was playing on the top line due to the injuries to Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog.

Colorado takes on the Flames this Tuesday in what could be a low-scoring game as Calgary has scored just three goals in their last four games and has held their opponents to three goals or less in five of their last six. Don’t hesitate to play the Under here.

HAT TRICK TRENDS

• Overs are starting to hit with more consistency of late. Last Week, totals went Over at 58 percent. That’s a big uptick considering it was nearly 50/50 O/U heading into last week. Washington (15-5-1 O/U), Nashville (13-6 O/U) and Florida (14-5-1 O/U) are the top-three Over teams on the season.

• The puck line (-1.5) is a beautiful thing when it hits as values range from +100 to up to +250 for favorites to win by two or more. However, favorites covered the -1.5 just eight of 51 games last week, good for 15.7 percent. On the year, favorites are covering at just 33 percent which makes the puck line a volatile play, especially with underdogs hitting at nearly 49 percent over the last month.

• The Buffalo Sabres, Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators are all hitting first-period Overs at 80 percent in their last 10 games. The Vegas Golden Knights, Columbus Blue Jackets, Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks are hitting their first-period Overs at 70 percent over their last 10.

PITTSBURGH (AP) Brock Nelsonâ??s second goal of the game 2:55 into overtime capped a frantic comeback to lift the New York Islanders over the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 Tuesday night to extend their points streak to 15 games.

The Islanders trailed by two late in the third period before goals by Josh Bailey and Ryan Pulock in the final 4:29 of regulation forced overtime. Nelson won it when he fired a shot at Matt Murray that trickled to the goaltenderâ??s right. Nelson tapped the rebound into the open net for his sixth goal of the season.

Anthony Beauvillier added his seventh for the Islanders, and Semyon Varlamov stopped 27 shots as New York improved to 14-0-1 in its last 15 games.

Brandon Tanev scored twice for Pittsburgh. Jake Guentzel had a goal and an assist and Bryan Rust also scored for the Penguins. Murray finished with 37 saves.

BLUES 3, LIGHTNING 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Oskar Sundqvist and David Perron scored to lead St. Louis past Tampa Bay, spoiling Pat Maroonâ??s much-anticipated return after helping his hometown team to a Stanley Cup title last season.

Maroon, a St. Louis native, made his first trip back to the city since signing a one-year contract with the Lightning in the offseason. He scored the winning goal in double overtime of Game 7 against Dallas in the second round of the 2019 playoffs to send the Blues to the Western Conference final for the second time in four years.

Before the opening faceoff, Blues general manager Doug Armstrong presented Maroon with his Stanley Cup championship ring on the ice with former teammate Vladimir Taraskeno, who is out with an injury, alongside as well. Maroon received a standing ovation and as he waved to the crowd, the fans responded with thunderous cheers.

BRUINS 5, DEVILS 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - David Pastrnak and Matt Grzelcyk scored two goals apiece, and Brad Marchand added three assists to lead Boston over New Jersey.

Tuukka Rask made 25 saves and New Jersey native Connor Clifton added a goal as the Bruins beat the Devils for the eighth time in nine meetings.

Blake Coleman scored for New Jersey, which was looking for its first three-game winning streak since December 2018. Mackenzie Blackwood made 23 saves in starting for the 12th time in 14 games.

BLUE JACKETS 5, CANADIENS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Pierre-Luc Dubois had two goals and an assist, rookie Emil Bemstrom added a goal and an assist, and Columbus beat Montreal.

Joonas Korpisalo stopped 30 shots for his eighth win as Columbus improved to 8-8-4. Eric Robinson and Boone Jenner also scored for the Blue Jackets.

Artturi Lehkonen and Joel Armia had the goals for the Canadiens. Carey Price stopped 21 shots in his first loss since Nov. 2 as Montreal fell to 11-6-4.

WILD 4, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Zach Parise scored twice, Alex Stalock made 30 saves and Minnesota beat Buffalo.

Jason Zucker had a goal and an assist, and Jonas Brodin also scored for the Wild, who improved to 4-2-1 in their last seven.

Brandon Montour scored for the Sabres and Linus Ullmark stopped 22 shots. Buffalo is on a 1-6-2 skid and battling injuries at the forward position following 9-2-1 start.

STARS 6, CANUCKS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Jamie Benn scored twice, Ben Bishop made 32 saves and Dallas beat Vancouver for its fourth straight victory.

The Stars have a nine-game point streak (8-0-1) and are 11-1-1 in their last 13 games. Benn has three goals in the last two games after scoring only once in his first 20 games. He also assisted on Justin Dowlingâ??s third goal in four games.

Corey Perry and defensemen Taylor Fedun and Miro Heiskanen also scored for Dallas. Bo Horvat scored in the second period on Bishop. Vancouver goalie Jacob Markstrom stopped 25 shots.

AVALANCHE 3, FLAMES 2

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Andre Burakovsky stayed hot with another two goals, leading Colorado over slumping Calgary.

Burakovsky has five goals in three games. The 24-year-old forward was promoted to the top line, and center Nathan MacKinnon assisted on both goals. MacKinnon has five goals and eight assists in his past six games.

Vladislav Kamenev also scored for Colorado, which has won five of six. The Avalanche improve to 3-1-0 on a five-game trip that wraps up on Thursday in Minnesota.

HURRICANES 4, BLACKHAWKS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Nino Niederreiter had a goal and an assist, and Carolina beat Chicago for its fourth straight victory.

Andrei Svechnikov and Martin Necas also scored as Carolina earned the franchiseâ??s first sweep of a regular season road trip of at least three games. Sebastian Aho had an empty-netter, and Petr Mrazek made 30 saves.

Chicago had won four in a row and five of six overall. The Blackhawks scored 21 times during their win streak, but they were very quiet before making a big push in the third period. Patrick Kane helped fuel the rally with two assists on his 31st birthday. Defensemen Erik Gustafsson and Connor Murphy scored 1:10 apart to trim Carolinaâ??s lead to 3-2 with 6:45 left.

SENATORS 4, RED WINGS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Anthony Duclair had two goals and an assist, and Ottawa held on to beat Detroit.

John Gabriel Pageau and Brady Tkachuk also scored for Ottawa. Anders Nilsson made 35 saves, including 15 in the third period when the Senators were outshot 16-3. The Senators scored three goals in a 5:22 span in the second period to take a 4-2 lead.

Valtteri Filppula had a goal and an assist, and Robby Fabbri and Anthony Mantha scored for Detroit, which ended a five-game point streak (3-0-2). Defenseman Filip Hronek had two assists and Jonathan Bernier stopped 29 shots.

JETS 2, PREDATORS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Patrik Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers scored, Connor Hellebuyck made 38 saves and Winnipeg defeated Nashville.

The teams are heading in opposite directions in the tough Central Division. Winnipeg has won three in a row and five of six. The reeling Predators have lost five straight and seven of eight.

Hellebuyck made 10 saves in the first period, 12 in the second and 16 in the third.

PANTHERS 5, FLYERS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Aleksander Barkov and Brett Connolly each had a goal and an assist to lift Florida over Philadelphia.

Jonathan Huberdeau, Colton Sceviour and Mike Hoffman also scored and Evgenii Dadonov had two assists. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 35 shots. The Panthers are 6-2-1 in their past nine games.

Morgan Frost scored a goal in his first NHL game and Travis Sanheim also scored for the Flyers, who have lost four straight. Carter Hart allowed four goals on 18 shots before being pulled midway through the second period. Brian Elliott stopped seven shots.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 2

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves for his 450th win, including a diving stop late in the game, and Vegas held off Toronto.

Fleury is three wins behind New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist for sixth place on the career list.

Mark Stone, Cody Glass, Tomas Nosek and Cody Eakin scored for Vegas. But for the second consecutive game it was Fleury who kept the Golden Knights in it with outstanding saves - particularly when the Maple Leafs turned up the pressure in the third period.

His biggest save came with 3:43 to go, when Nic Petan's backhand toward a wide-open net was thwarted as Fleury dove back to his left and with his body outstretched snatched the puck before it hit twine, sending 18,292 fans into a frenzy - even some wearing Maple Leafs jerseys.

Jason Spezza and Zach Hyman scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen, who has lost his last four starts, made 33 saves.

OILERS 5, SHARKS 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists for his third straight game with at least three points, Leon Draisaitl extended his point streak to 13 games and Edmonton snapped San Joseâ??s six-game winning streak.

McDavid assisted on goals by Zack Kassian and James Neal to stake Edmonton to a 4-1 lead after two periods and then capped another big night with an insurance goal in the third to get the Oilers off to a strong start on their five-game road trip. McDavid became the first Edmonton player with three or more points in three consecutive games since Mark Messier in January 1990.

Draisaitl assisted on that last goal, giving him 28 points during his current streak.

Markus Granlund scored his first of the season, Jujhar Khaira also had a goal and Mikko Koskinen made 33 saves for the Oilers.

Kevin Labanc and Barclay Goodrow scored for the Sharks, who had been playing their best hockey of the season following a five-game skid. Martin Jones made 24 saves.

Wednesday’s 6-pack

Some of this weekend’s interesting college football games:

— Texas A&M @ Georgia (-13.5)

— TCU @ Oklahoma (-18)

— Minnesota (-13.5) @ Northwestern

— Oregon (-14.5) @ Arizona State

— Oregon State @ Washington State (-10.5)

— Texas @ Baylor (-5.5)

Quote of the Day
“I know I can play, and I would think my reputation is still solid. It’s baffling to me.”
39-year old Jamal Crawford, who is currently unemployed

Wednesday’s quiz
Which NFL QB has won the most games without winning a championship?

Tuesday’s quiz
Philip Rivers played his college football at NC State.

Monday’s quiz
Durham Bulls were a single-A team when the famous movie Bull Durham was made; now they’re the AAA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

********************

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……

13) Cincinnati Bengals when Marvin Lewis was coach: 131-122-3 (2003-18)

Cincinnati Bengals without Marvin Lewis as coach: 42-147 (1991-2002, 2019)

Bengals went 0-7 in playoff games under Lewis, so the natives got restless and they fired him, which now seems like a mistake.

12) Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but Tom Brady IS NOT the best quarterback ever; he’s won the most Super Bowls, but thats not the argument:

If we were drafting football teams, with every player ever in their prime eligible, which QB would you take to start your team?

11) New England Patriots have started 23 drives in opponent territory, a big reason why they’re 9-1- their offense isn’t so great this year, but their defense/special teams are.

10) Rhode Island 70, Nicholls State 65— Colonels lost three of first four D-I games, losing in OT at Illinois, by 10 at LSU- they won at Pittsburgh.

Nicholls starts three seniors and a junior; they should be a contender in the Southland Conference this winter.

9) Virginia 61, Vermont 55— Catamounts beat St John’a LW, are pretty heavy favorite to win America East this winter.

8) Kansas 75, East Tennessee State 63—Jayhawks won despite going 1-14 on the arc, a number we’ll keep an eye on as conference play gets closer.

7) Very good commercial on the Memphis Grizzlies’ local telecast; realtor.com, with NBA star Lou Williams, who has played for six teams in his 15-year NBA career, saying how whenever he has to move (they show a couple of his old houses) he uses realtor.com

Williams has earned over $74M in salary in his career, so he can afford nice houses.

6) Radford 67, Northwestern 56— Going to be a long winter for the Wildcats; if you lose at home to Merrimack/Redford, playing in the Big 14 figures to be a big problem.

5) Houston 97, Rice 89— Owls led their crosstown rivals 39-32 at the half, but lost to Houston for 6th time in a row.

Cougars scored 65 points in the second half.

4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-8 ATS) are the worst NFL team against the pointspread so far this season.

3) Montana Tech 74, Montana 72— Griz were in the NCAA’s the last two years, but lost their first two D-I games this month, then lose here to the Orediggers, who play in the Frontier League. This was Montana’s first loss to a non-D-I team since they lost to Alaska-Anchorage in 2002- their last losing season was in 2008.

2) Boston U 78, South Carolina 70— Gamecocks were in Final Four three years ago, but are 36-33 since then, 18-18 in SEC games. SEC teams shouldn’t lose to Patriot League teams.

1) A student manager for South Carolina’s football team got fired after he was arrested for public disorderly conduct when he got into a fight with a guy on Halloween night who dressed up as South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp.
