Devils strike fast, hold off Canucks 2-1
November 10, 2019
By The Associated Press

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) Wayne Simmonds and Jesper Bratt scored 22 seconds apart in the first period and Mackenzie Blackwood made 30 saves in the New Jersey Devils' 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday.

Brock Boeser had a power-play goal for Vancouver. The Canucks are 0-3-1 in their last four games.

Simmonds opened the scoring on a power play with 8:12 left in the first period. Taylor Hall sent a pass into the Canucks' zone that Kyle Palmieri directed to Simmonds. He put it past goalie Jacob Markstrom for the Devils' second road power-play goal of the season.

Bratt quickly made it 2-0 at 12:10 when he deflected Damon Severson's point shot.

Boeser scored with 7:20 left in the second. He took J.T. Miller's pass, used his speed to skate into the Devil's zone, then beat Blackwood with a low shot to the far corner.

It was the second head-to-head brother clash between Vancouver's Quinn Hughes, the 20-year-old defenseman picked seventh overall in the 2018 draft, and Jack Hughes, the 18-year-old center picked No. 1 by the Devils this year. Quinn Hughes assisted on Boeser's goal.

Andreas Athanasiou and defenseman Madison Bowey also scored and Jonathan Bernier made 17 saves to help the Red Wings win their second straight games.

Jonathan Marchessault and Max Pacioretty scored for Vegas and Subban stopped 16 shots. The Golden Knights are 1-2-3 in their last six.

Coyotes win in shootout, snap Capitals' win streak at 6
November 11, 2019
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Conor Garland scored the shootout winner minutes after an apparent Capitals overtime goal was waved off by video review, and the Arizona Coyotes responded from blowing a big lead to beat Washington 4-3 Monday night.

The NHL-leading Capitals' winning streak was snapped at six. The Coyotes ended their own three-game skid.

Arizona blew a 3-0 lead for a second consecutive game but came away victorious this time. The Coyotes thought they lost in OT when T.J. Oshie scored, but the goal was wiped out after a replay review because the play was offside.

Making a rare start for Arizona, goaltender Antti Raanta was one of the best players on the ice in making 31 saves during regulation and overtime. Raanta went spread eagle to deny Jakub Vrana 63 seconds in, made a Grade-A save on Tom Wilson less than a minute later and slid over to stop Alex Ovechkin from his patented spot on the power play in the third period.

Clayton Keller scored in the first period, and Christian Fischer and Michael Grabner had goals 35 seconds apart early in the second to build the Coyotes' lead. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored twice and Oshie tied it with 1:16 left to send the game to overtime.

HURRICANES 8, SENATORS 2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Sebastian Aho scored twice, Joel Edmundson had a goal and two assists, and Carolina beat Ottawa to snap a four-game losing streak.

Warren Foegele, Ryan Dzingel and Martin Necas each had a goal and an assist, and Haydn Fleury and Dougie Hamilton also scored to help the Hurricanes win for only the second time this month (2-4-0) after matching a franchise record with eight wins in October. Andre Svechnikov and Brett Pesce each added two assists, and Petr Mrazek stopped 26 shots for his eighth win of the season.

Colin White and Brady Tkachuk scored for Ottawa, which had won three of its previous four games. Anders Nilsson gave up four goals on 19 shots before being pulled in the second period, and Craig Anderson stopped 20 of the 24 shots he faced.

Armadillo:Tuesday's six-pack

Interesting college football games this weekend:

— Indiana @ Penn State (-14)

— Minnesota @ Iowa (-3)

— Arizona State (-2.5) @ Oregon State

— Georgia (-3) @ Auburn

— Texas @ Iowa State (-6.5)

— TCU (-3) @ Texas Tech

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) Whenever I see the commercials where the guy buys his wife a Lexus or a big truck for Christmas, I laugh at myself for the gifts I bought my ex-wife when we were married; guess I was a slacker, but then I think of this question:

Say you buy your wife a Lexus for Christmas this year; what do you buy her next year? Can’t be setting the bar too high, ya know?

12) If I was the school president or AD at a school in a big time football league, and my team was a 43-point underdog to a team in our same league, I’d be asking some tough questions about our coaching staff or our school’s commitment to the sport.

Then when our team lost that game 73-14, I’d be looking for a new bleeping coach.

11) Arkansas fired football coach Chad Morris after he lost 18 of his first 22 games, including a 45-19 loss to Western Kentucky Saturday, and they were favored in that game.

10) Seton Hall’s star G Myles Powell will be sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury; he began the season as the Big East Preseason Player of the Year.

9) Indiana Hoosiers’ football team is ranked in the top 25 for the first time in 25 years.

8) University of Maine’s basketball team has 13 international players; LMU has seven. More and more, low/mid-majors are recruiting international kids.

7) NBA stuff:
— Toronto Raptors’ PG Kyle Lowry broke his thumb, is out for a couple weeks.
— Celtics’ F Gordon Hayward broke his left hand.

6) I’m curious how much cash Allstate ponies up to sponsor the nets behind the goal posts at the college football games. They’ve been doing it for long time now.

5) Pro golfer Eddie Pepperell was disqualified from the Turkish Airlines Open on Saturday when he ran out of golf balls; seriously.

Pepperell hit as many as five balls — his playing partners were unsure — into the water on the par-5 4th hole. He had putted with a wedge on the previous hole; sounds little bit like he wanted to get the hell out of Turkey.

4) USC 31, Arizona State 26— Trojans’ freshman QB Kevin Slovis threw for 432 yards and four TD’s in his homecoming game to the Phoenix area; 297 of those yards and all four TD’s came in the first quarter.

3) San Diego Padres are going back to brown/white uniforms next season, their original colors, and that is a good thing.

2) Seahawks 27, 49ers 24 OT:
— Unusually intense game, had the feel of a playoff game.
— Seahawks had two offensive TD drives; they were only 16-24 yards.
— This was first of four consecutive primetime games for Seattle.

— Each team had five sacks and scored a defensive TD.
— Teams combined for seven turnovers.
— 49ers missed a 47-yard FG in OT that would’ve won game.

1) Redskins named Dwayne Haskins starting QB for the rest of the season.

California Love

Opposing teams do not mind facing the three teams from the Golden State right now, as the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks are the sixth, seventh and eighth place teams in the Pacific Division. In fact, the Kings have the lowest amount of points (10) in the Western Conference, posting a 5-10-0-0 record through 15 games. While they're been so-so at home, they're a dismal 2-6-0-0 in eight games on the road. Los Angeles have a minus-23 goal differential, which ranks 30th in the NHL behind only the Detroit Red Wings (minus-30). While the Sharks have shown some signs of turning things around with three victories in a row, they still have just 15 points and a minus-16. The Ducks are above the .500 mark at 9-8-1-0, but they're on a three-game skid.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Nov. 12

Florida at Boston:
The Panthers have quietly started to jell nicely together, going 8-4-2-3 overall, including 5-3-0-3 on the road. The Bruins have started to show some chinks in the armor lately, losing a couple of games in regulation after rolling to a red-hot start. They're still 11-3-1-2 overall, and 7-0-0-2 at home. Their only setbacks on home ice, both in shootouts, last time out against Philadelphia on Sunday, and 4-3 on Oct. 17 against Tampa Bay. The Bruins are leaky a little bit of oil recently, going 0-2-1 across the past three, and they have allowed 4.0 goals per game across the past four. Tuukka Rask is expected to draw the nod in between the pipes against Florida. He is 7-2-0 with a 1.99 goals-against average and .933 save percentage with two shutouts. For Florida, Sergei Bobrovsky will tend the twine, and he is 6-3-2 with a 3.39 GA and .884 save percentage. The over has cashed in Bob's past four road starts, and the over is 5-1 in Florida's past six away from home.

Pittsburgh at N.Y. Rangers:
The Pens and Blueshirts hook up for the first time this season. New York is coming off a 6-5 shootout loss against the Panthers last time out on home ice. However, New York's offense has been rolling, posting 14 total goals across the past three outings, and an average of 4.0 goals per game across the past eight. The Pens enjoyed their most recent trip to the New York metropolitan area, topping the Islanders 4-3 in overtime, ending the Isles' 10-game winning streak. In seven games on the road this season the Pens are a respectable 4-3-0.

Edmonton at San Jose:
The Oilers and Sharks will hook up at 'The Tank' for the first meeting of the season between the teams. Edmonton hasn't appeared in the postseason since the 2016-17 season, but that could change if they keep playing the way that they are. The Oilers are 4-1-1 across the past six games overall, and they have won three straight games on the road. The Sharks are on a long homestand, and they started off a bit shaky with losses to Winnipeg on Nov. 1, and Vancouver on Nov. 2, losing by a combined 8-4 score. However, they have rattled off three straight wins against Chicago, Minnesota and Nashville to climb out of the cellar and back toward respectability. Hey, the Blues were in terrible shape early in the season before catching lightning in a bottle and going all the way to the to. It's super early. Last season the Sharks lost 4-3 in overtime in the first meeting before rattling off four straight victories in the series.

Wednesday, Nov. 13

Toronto at N.Y. Islanders:
The Maple Leafs signed John Tavares as a free-agent last offseason, and he was treated rather rudely upon his return to Long Island on Feb. 28, as the Leafs fell 6-1. The Islanders outscored the Leafs 10-1 in the first two meetings before the Leafs exacted a little revenge for Johnny T on April 1 (no foolin'!) with a 2-1 win behind Frederik Andersen. Andersen was injured and unable to play in the first meeting, and Garret Spark (now in Vegas) started that 6-1 betdown. Robin Lehner started all three games for the Islanders, and he now plies his trade in Chicago. The point is, look to the trends lately, which are stacked heavily in favor of the Islanders. They're on a 12-game point streak, going 11-0-1-0 across the past 12 games.

Chicago at Vegas:
The nightcap in Wednesday's compact, five-game slate features the Blackhawks and Golden Knights. The last time these teams played on the West Side of Chicago was a great battle. I remember it well, as the Golden Knights were at the end of a road trip, and losing 1-0 late. The aforementioned Lehner was standing on his hand, but the Knights notched a late goal to tie it and force overtime, and they ended up winning in a shootout. The Golden Knights have never lost to the Blackhawks in seven all-time regular-season meetings. What was odd about that meeting earlier on Oct. 22 was that it went 'under'. The first six battles in this series ended up hitting the 'over'. Four of the games have been decided by one goal, but VGK is averaging 4.7 goals per game in the meetings while allowing 2.6 goals per game allowed.

Thursday, Nov. 14

N.Y. Rangers at Tampa Bay:
The Lightning skated out of Madison Square Garden back on Oct. 29 with a 4-1 loss against the Rangers in the first meeting, cashing at +180. It was an ugly trip to the New York City area, as the Lightning dropped two of three in the city. They saw Andrei Vasilevskiy lose two starts in a row, too, something he didn't do at any point last season. He rebounded over in Sweden, topping the Buffalo Sabres on Friday afternoon at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm as Vasilevskiy got his mojo back. Now, he'll look for a little revenge against the Blueshirts. The Rangers have been involved in a little fire-wagon hockey at home lately, scoring 26 goals across the past six at MSG while allowing 23.

San Jose at Anaheim:
The sixth and seventh place teams in the Pacific Division will look horns at 'The Pond' for the second time this season. The Ducks won the first meeting by a 3-1 count back on Oct. 5 as the 'under' connected. Five of the past nine battles in this series have been one-goal games, with each of those meetings decided by overtime twice and a shootout three times. The 'over' is 3-1-1 over the past five meetings in this series, and the Sharks have outscored the Ducks just 27-25 across the past nine meetings, which is rather indicative of how close these games usually end up.

Panthers rally from 4 down, beat Bruins 5-4 in shootout
November 12, 2019
By The Associated Press

BOSTON (AP) Mike Hoffman scored one of four Florida goals in the third period and added the winner in a shootout as the Panthers rallied from a four-goal deficit and beat the Boston Bruins 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Keith Yandle had a goal and two assists for Florida and Sam Montembeault didn't allow a goal after replacing Sergei Bobrovsky at the start of the third period with the Panthers trailing 4-0.

Montembeault finished with 15 saves, six in overtime, and stopped Charlie McAvoy on Boston's last chance in the shootout as the Panthers completed the comeback and gave coach Joel Quenneville career victory No. 899.

Aaron Ekblad and Frank Vatrano also scored for Florida.

David Pastrnak scored his league-leading 16th goal for Boston. Joakim Nordstrom, Anders Bjork and Zdeno Chara also scored. Tuukka Rask made 25 saves.

David Krejci had two assists for Boston, which lost its fourth straight.

CANADIENS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2, SO

MONTREAL (AP) - Jonathan Drouin scored the shootout winner and Montreal rallied to beat Columbus.

Brendan Gallagher and Tomas Tatar scored third-period goals for the Canadiens (10-5-3), who trailed 1-0 after two periods. Carey Price made 33 saves. The Canadiens have won six of their last eight games (6-1-1).

Eric Robinson and Zach Werenski scored in regulation for Columbus (6-8-4). Backup goalie Elvis Merzlikins, who was recalled from the AHL on Monday, made 30 saves.

RANGERS 3, PENGUINS 2, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Kaapo Kakko scored his second goal of the game 2:36 into overtime, giving New York a victory over Pittsburgh.

Adam Fox had a goal in regulation and set up Kakko's winner as New York recovered after blowing a two-goal lead and improved to 5-1-1 in its last seven games. Alexandar Georgiev, getting the start after Henrik Lundqvist played the previous three games, finished with 30 saves.

Justin Schultz and Jared McCann scored for the short-handed Penguins, who earned at least a point for the sixth time in seven games (4-1-2). Matt Murray, making his seventh straight start and 15th in 18 games this season, stopped 24 shots.

The Penguins were without star center Sidney Crosby due to a lower body injury. The two-time MVP did not travel with the team to New York after leaving in the third period of a 3-2 shootout win over Chicago on Saturday.

AVALANCHE 4, JETS 0

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Adam Werner made 40 saves in his NHL debut and Nathan MacKinnon finished with two goals and two assists as Colorado extended its winning streak to three games.

Werner's shutout is shared with Pavel Francouz, who started but only lasted 31 seconds before getting injured.

Rookie defenseman Cale Makar opened the scoring for the Avalanche (11-5-2). Joonas Donskoi had a goal and two assists, and Matt Calvert contributed a pair of assists.

It was the first time this season the Jets (10-8-1) were shut out.

Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves for Winnipeg, which went 2-1-1 on a four-game homestand.

COYOTES 3, BLUES 2, SO

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Nick Schmaltz and Conor Garland scored in the shootout, and Arizona snapped St. Louis' seven-game winning streak.

Garland's power-play goal tied it 2-all at 5:58 of the third period. St. Louis native Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist against his hometown team.

Jaden Schwartz and Colton Parayko scored for the Blues, but the defending Stanley Cup champions dropped to 0-2 in shootouts this season.

Arizona improved to 3-0 in tiebreakers after winning in a shootout for the second consecutive night. The Coyotes topped Washington 4-3 on Monday.

Darcy Kuemper made 33 saves for Arizona. St. Louis goalie Jordan Binnington stopped 20 shots.

CANUCKS 5, PREDATORS 3

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Elias Pettersson scored two goals on his 21st birthday and Vancouver snapped a four-game winless streak with a win over Nashville.

Tanner Pearson also scored twice for Vancouver, his second into an empty net. Adam Gaudette also scored for the Canucks (10-6-3), who are 1-3-1 in their last five.

Vancouver scored three times on the power play.

Filip Forsberg scored twice for the Predators (9-6-3). Calle Jarnkrok added another goal.

The teams combined for six goals in a wild third period.

RED WINGS 4, DUCKS 3, OT

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Dylan Larkin scored the tying goal during a 6-on-3 advantage with 37 seconds left in regulation, and Dennis Cholowski scored with 2:56 on the clock in overtime to send Detroit to its third straight victory.

After Ducks defensemen Brendan Guhle and Korbinian Holzer took penalties 21 seconds apart in the waning moments of regulation, Larkin scored from a sharp angle while the Red Wings had three extra skaters on the ice with their goalie pulled.

Cholowski then got his second goal of the season on a long shot past Ryan Miller, who made 32 saves for Anaheim.

Jakob Silfverberg, Josh Mahura and Cam Fowler scored in the second period for the Ducks. Ondrej Kase and Adam Henrique had two assists apiece, but Anaheim lost for the first time in seven games this season when scoring at least three goals.

Filip Hronek and Andreas Athanasiou scored in the second period for the Red Wings, and Jonathan Bernier stopped 24 shots against his former team.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Interesting college football games this weekend:

— Wisconsin (-14) @ Nebraska

— Alabama (-20.5) @ Mississippi State

— Florida (-7) @ Missouri

— Michigan State @ Michigan (-13.5)

— Oklahoma (-10) @ Baylor

— Stanford @ Washington State (-11)

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's Den: Mid-week musings, and NFL knowledge

13) Evansville 67, Kentucky 64— Purple Aces, coached by Kentucky alum Walter McCarty, were a 25-point underdog here; Evansville plays only one senior- they beat Ball State by 4 in their opener. Aces made only 9-30 on the arc, but outrebounded Kentucky.

12) Phil Knight Invitational, Portland OR:
Oregon 82, Memphis 74: Ducks got 17 points from UNLV transfer Juiston, survived 15-27 shooting on foul line and got themselves a quality win. Memphis is really young, and they’re going to improve, so this win will likely look better in March than it does now.

Oklahoma 77, Oregon State 69: Sooners outscored Oregon State 44-37 in 2nd hall; Beavers missed a bunch of layups, as Pac-12 teams split this twinbill in Portland.

11) Seattle Seahawks are 8-2, look like a playoff team, but there is such a fine line between winning and losing in the NFL. Here are some of Seattle’s wins:
Week 1: beat Cincinnati 21-20— Bengals are 0-9.
Week 2: beat Steelers 28-26— Pittsburgh’s backup QB played 2nd half.
Week 5: beat Rams 30-29— Rams missed 41-yard FG on the last play.
Week 6: beat Browns 32-28— Seattle trailed 20-6 in 2nd quarter.
Week 9: beat Buccaneers 40-34 (OT)— Seattle trailed 21-7 in 2nd quarter.
Week 10: beat 49ers 27-24 (OT)— 49ers missed a 47-yard FG in OT.

This is evidence that right now, Russell Wilson is the MVP.

10) Coppin State 76, Loyola Chi 72— This is the Eagles’ first non-league win against a D-I team in six years, or 74 non-league games ago. Loyola was only 22-34 on foul line.

9) Sunday is November 17 and is the Atlanta Falcons’ first outdoor game this season.

8) Xavier 63, Missouri 58 OT— Teams combined to make 9-46 on the arc, as evidence mounts that moving the arc back 16 inches from where it was LY is going to be a big deal. Both teams shot 33.3% or worse from floor.

7) Chiefs lead NFL, with 16 TD plays of 20+ yards; Dallas is next, with 11.

Giants have allowed 13 TD’s of 20+ yards; Oakland is next, allowing 11.

6) Weird stat of the day; Detroit Pistons have lost their last 14 playoff games, the longest-such streak in NBA history.

5) NBA injuries:
— Celtics’ star Gordon Hayward (hand) is out six weeks .
— Rockets’ G Eric Gordon (knee) is out for six weeks.
— Kings’ G De’Aaron Fox (ankle) is out 3-4 weeks.

NFL statistics, thru 10 weeks:

NHL-leading Caps top Flyers 2-1 in SO to extend point streak
November 13, 2019
By The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in a shootout to lift the Washington Capitals over the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Brendan Leipsic had a goal in the first period and Braden Holtby made 30 saves for the Capitals, who extended their point streak to 13 games (11-0-2) and increased their NHL-best total to 32 points.

Claude Giroux scored a power-play goal in the third period for the Flyers (10-5-3), who had won four straight. Philadelphia has earned at least one point in seven consecutive games (5-0-2).

Carter Hart had 35 saves, including several late highlight-reel stops, but the 21-year-old netminder couldn't stop either Washington attempt in the shootout.

ISLANDERS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 4

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Anthony Beauvillier scored twice, Derick Brassard had a goal and two assists, and the streaking New York Islanders held off Toronto.

Semyon Varlamov made 23 saves and the Islanders earned a point for the 13th straight game (12-0-1). Mathew Barzal had a goal and an assist.

Kasperi Kapanen, William Nylander, Justin Holl and John Tavares scored for Toronto in its third straight loss. Frederik Andersen had 25 saves in the Maple Leafs' second game since losing Mitchell Marner for at least four weeks due to a high ankle sprain.

SENATORS 4, DEVILS 2

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored a hat track, including the go-ahead goal with 2:01 to play, and Ottawa rallied in the third period to beat New Jersey.

Mark Borowiechi tied the game with 6:30 to go, and Pageau got the winner when he put the rebound of a shot off the post by Nick Paul into an open net. Pageau finished off his first regular-season hat trick with 26 seconds left on a shot into an empty net. He has eight goals in his last six games.

Craig Anderson made 21 saves for the Senators, including a breakaway stop on Taylor Hall midway through the third period with the Devils ahead 2-1.

Will Butcher and Wayne Simmonds scored for New Jersey, which returned from a five-game road trip. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 21 shots.

BLACKHAWKS 5, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Erik Gustafsson scored his first goal of the season, Corey Crawford made 39 saves and Chicago beat Vegas for the first time.

Patrick Kane, Calvin de Haan, Kirby Dach and Dylan Strome also scored for the Blackhawks. Crawford, who improved to 2-0-2 in his last four games, entered 0-3-0 versus Vegas with a 5.38 goals-against average and .859 save percentage.

William Carrier, William Karlsson and Nate Schmidt scored for the Golden Knights against a team they'd dominated since entering the NHL in 2017. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 21 shots.

STARS 3, FLAMES 1

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Joe Pavelski scored twice, including an empty-net goal, and the resurgent Dallas Stars defeated Calgary.

Calgary native Justin Dowling's first NHL goal was the winner for Dallas, which is 8-1-1 after stumbling to a 1-7-1 start this season. Ben Bishop made 24 saves.

Sean Monahan scored for the Flames (10-8-3), who lost in regulation for just the second time at home (6-2-2). Cam Talbot turned aside 29 shots.
