Notes from The Opening:

BEAVERTON, Ore. - This is Jacob Eason vs. Shea Patterson all over again.

Except this time it's Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields battling for the No. 1 quarterback spot in the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings, which this cycle doubles as the top prospect in America regardless of position.

Eason led for much of the process back in 2016 before Patterson overtook him at the very end. Talking to my colleague Barton Simmons on Monday afternoon as we continued to watch the two 2018 signal-callers, he believed Lawrence has a better chance of holding off Fields than Eason did. However, after what we saw from Fields (our unofficial stats charted him at 72 percent with 16 touchdowns and a stunning zero interceptions on 23 drives), making the move is something both of us are certainly thinking strongly about.

What we can't forget regardless of everything we've seen this camp season is that the 6-foot-6, 200-pound Lawrence has led Cartersville (Ga.) High to two-straight state titles. Barring injury he will head to Clemson as the Peach State's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, breaking another former Tiger's records in DeShaun Watson. Lawrence has been No. 1 since we debuted our class-of-2018 rankings years ago and what he's done in-between the lines in 11-on-11 football is as impressive as any quarterback prospect in recent memory.

And just like Eason, for the longest time Lawrence's spot at No. 1 at his position felt completely safe. Remember: All the schools recruiting Fields now targeted Lawrence first.

But — Fields keeps getting better ... and better ... and better.

Fields waited his turn behind South Carolina signee Lorenzo Nunez at Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison. In his first season as the starter last fall he completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,253 yards and 18 touchdowns. He added another 977 yards rushing and 14 more scores. Those are strong numbers but nothing like the win totals or stats Lawrence has put up. However this spring Fields showed off his terrific athleticism including a 4.51 laser-timed 40-yard dash at The Opening Regional in Orlando. He's going to be a dynamic guy on the next level. And with each passing 7-on-7 tournament Fields looked better and better. The Opening Finals were his best work, and as good as we've ever seen at the Nike World Headquarters.

With a ton of weapons around him, the 6-foot-3, 221-pound Fields made it look easy from the very first snap, spreading the ball around to the likes of Penn State commit Justin Shorter, Kamryn Babb, Josh Vann, tight end Luke Ford and others en route to earning 247Sports' MVP honors. The poise, how he was able to quickly slow things down, seeing the field so well and taking care of the football, in addition to his physical tools, were second to none this weekend. Lawrence performed in the top third of the group but he wasn't on Fields' level in this tournament.

We still have the coming fall and then the All-America Bowl season to continue comparing these two as this storyline is nowhere close to resolved.

***

Where does Fields end up?

The former Penn State commit is strongly considering Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Georgia, with the plan to take official visits in the fall before deciding.

Fields did a recent overnight visit to Gainesville and wants to do one next with the Tigers. He's blown away by Jimbo Fisher and enjoyed his summer camp experience in Tallahassee. He's also been over to Athens a couple times since decommitting in early June, as well as at least two trips to see Auburn.

My 247Sports Crystal Ball remains on the Gators. UF hasn't heavily pursued any other quarterback this cycle and several coaches are in daily contact with him and his father.

But there was a mixed bag of folks around Fields that see him going to any of the above schools.

***

I really liked what I saw from the Miami commits in Oregon, a class that has moved back to No. 1 in the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings.

The country's top-ranked tight end per the 247Sports Composite in Brevin Jordan was as reliable a pass catcher as there was in the tournament.

It's an extremely talented year at receiver and Mark Pope is right there in the middle of it as one of the best.

Cornerback Josh Jobe has the traits to be a special player in Coral Gables and Al Blades Jr. flashed as well.

Running back Cam'Ron Davis was as good catching the football as any of his peers.

Defensive tackle Nesta Silvera is an absolute pocket pusher with a fourth star coming his way.

Offensive lineman Delone Scaife was consistent in 1-on-1s.

Running back Lorenzo Lingard, receiver Brian Hightower and tight end Will Mallory (injury knocked him out early) had their moments as well. A terrific class is coming Miami's way.

***

Other quick takeaways include...

Shorter should be a five-star. We are excited to talk about that as we update our rankings from this event. Babb remains in the discussion, too. I continue to like the Buckeyes for Babb.

And speaking of liking Ohio State, Jeremy Ruckert is the most dynamic tight end in the country but Luke Ford isn't bad. Ruckert plans to announce within the next couple weeks with Michigan looking to spoil OSU's plans. Ford is leaning towards Alabama but Georgia among others have him thinking.

Jackson Carman is the nation's No. 1 offensive tackle prospect and Jamaree Salyer is still that guy on the inside. Could they both beat teammates at Clemson? Absolutely, but I still like the Buckeyes for Carman who is looking at USC as well. Clemson is my pick for Salyer but Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame and a couple others are in play. William Barnes was the most consistent offensive line performer over a two-day stretch. Florida and North Carolina may be his leaders but folks need to be talking about Florida State more here. The Seminoles are very much in it.

The defensive line didn't have a standout, but Clemson five-star commit Xavier Thomas certainly flashed rare ability in this camp with his unique first two steps and ridiculous power. Perhaps he's No. 1 over the two quarterbacks? Notre Dame defensive tackle commit Jayson Ademilola was the standout on the inside.

Isaac Taylor-Stuart ran a 4.32 40-yard dash in the semifinals en route to taking home fastest man at the event. He also made a lot of plays during 7-on-7. I continue to like USC's chances for the nation's No 3 cornerback.

Nebraska commit Brendan Radley-Hiles was the most exciting defensive player at the event, forcing several turnovers and getting his hands on several other passes.

Quarterback Tanner McKee is worth the wait. The Corona (Calif.) Centennial standout will take a two-year LDS Mission before enrolling at the school of his choice. 247Sports' No. 3-ranked quarterback lived up to his lofty ranking during 7-on-7 play, at times making it look as easy as Fields did. BYU will get the last official from the 6-foot-6, 220-pound McKee the first weekend of February, but Alabama, Texas, Washington and UCLA are four others that will get visits during the fall. If Stanford offers they'll certainly be a contender as well.

good overview there, coach. thx for posting. disagree on Salyer...think he ends up in Crimson along with Sewell for a pair of great interior lineman.

would be weird to see a central Ohio kid NOT go to ohio state but sounds like Carman is more than a clemson lean. in the end you have to assume he goes to the bucks as they simply don't miss on kids from greater Cbus.

Luke Ford will look very good in a Daboll offense ... 247 have 5 TE >.950 rating but Luke Ford has the most upside. super raw, tall, hands are glue. Seems very confused on where he will end up although 90% chance it's in the SEC (10% stays home for Illini)

With Fields I will be happy with anyone other than the barn or state penn. kid will be a superstar...even Nuss can't screw him up

I think you will end up happy.

This is second hand info but comes from someone who has a son on the FSU staff. A couple of weeks ago the son thought Fields was leaning to AU with FSU a close second.

Not sure what changed his mind but he now believes Fields is all FSU with Ga being their biggest threat.

He may be right about FSU being in the drivers seat but recruiting is all about momentum and Ga certainly has that on their side this year.

As for Fields to AU, anything is possible but I don't see it. AU didn't start seriously recruiting Fields until Chip Lindsey was brought in as OC. Lindsey has a very good relationship with Fields. Fields playing on Cam's 7vs7 team doesn't hurt either, but I don't think either one of those factors play a big enough role for him to end up there.

No school wants to lose a kid with Fields ability but if AU doesn't get his commitment it won't be devastating from a QB perspective, but impact their recruiting in other ways - all negative. Where ever Fields ends up, other kids are likely to follow (Ross, for example - although I believe he ends up at bama either way). Ga and FSU are going to sign great classes no matter what. Florida is treading water and AU currently sinking. A commitment to either AU or Florida could change their class tremendously - just don't think it happens to either.

I'd be a little surprised, but not shocked, if Ross went to barn or Clemson.

will be some very good direct h2h battles this year between AU/UA ... asa martin, justyn ross, coynis miller

saw the florida commit, schwartz, that barn wants badly ran a crazy 4.27 at the event this weekend.

ross bombed with a slow 40, poor 1 on 1's, quiet 7on7. probably will end at bama but kid has major bust potential. will probably lose one of those 5 stars after his performance at the event. saw him in a pic with lawrence...one of these guys is not 6'5' :) - ross' eyes come up to lawrence's chin

pretty good overview from Rivals on who had the best recruiting this spring.

1 Oregon
2 Miami
3 Ohio St
4 Florida State
5 Nebraska

given the decommit from FSU's top recruit, RB Cook, I'd pull them down and put Texas A&M in that slot but of course that just happened yesterday and not in the spring.

notice no SEC teams making spring recruiting top 5....

Yeah RT have noticed but NO CONCERN what's so ever.

SEC will be strong like every year since I've been alive.

This year....NO DIFFERENT.

I think Auburn and LSU have a shot to be good this year.

Auburn, if Stidham turns out to be a star.....and LSU if Canada (the OC) can ignite the offense. Both teams have enough talent to win 9 or more games.....and with some luck I think they could beat Bama (maybe 1 out of 10 times, but "on any given saturday").

SEC will have 10 new coordinators this season. Five on each side of the ball.

OC: Brian Daboll (Alabama), Matt Canada (LSU), Chip Lindsey (Auburn), Larry Scott (Tennessee), Phil Longo (Ole Miss)

DC: Randy Shannon (Florida), Wesley McGriff (Ole Miss), Todd Grantham (Miss State), Paul Rhodes (Arkansas), Matt House (Kentucky)

I'm very interested in both Alabama/Auburn coordinators and what they can bring to the offenses.

Warms my heart to see that team in red. FSU also pretty much had 4-star DB Houston Griffith committed, but since then the 247 crystal balls are going Nebraska, same with the Georgia DB Tutt. Add the Alpha-dog defender from The Opening Radley-Hiles and participant Chase Williams and NU is working on the best DB class in the country...if they land them all, which would be a mouthful of crow for people that said they couldn't recruit given the location. I've said the last four years that the player-coach relationship is as big as location....not downplaying location, it's a big factor. I'm a believer in the 500 mile radius. But NU has a couple of assistants doing work in the south and west right now.

Everything is cyclical in life. Other conferences have stepped up the game in response to the SEC reign of terror. Save Alabama, dominating is pretty much over. I think Alabama has been good and bad for the SEC. Good in that they carry that flag, bad in that other programs have had to try and keep up with Saban and I think they've made some bad hires, watering down some of the coaching with some career assistants running a few SEC programs.

Seeing the SEC having a slower start is for concern. Don't forget that official visits can now be had in the summer and the defacto signing date is December. Plenty of different factors that should indicate there is a check engine light on.

Don't know if it is a keep up with Saban thing, but I think coaching - or lack thereof - is the biggest reason so many SEC schools have taken a step back in recent years. Some of these coaching hires are complete head scratchers. Also makes one wonder why some of these also-rans are still employed.

I did not understand the Malzahn hire by AU. But being an alum I tried to view it in a positive light. Malzahn, by nature, is an OC and that is not going to change no matter the title in front of his name. He wants the power provided a head coach with none of the responsibilities. He has not grasped the fact the intangibles of being a head coach are completely different than they used to be. To be successful a coach today has to do more than win football games. He must be a fund raiser, he must cater to the powers to be and he must please the fan base. Malzahn considers these intangibles unnecessary. He’s going to find out exactly how unnecessary they are if he keeps losing 5 games a year.

South Carolina hiring Muschamp was another head scratcher. I know USCe did not have the name recognition to hire Knute Rockne, but damn - why bring in a coach who just failed miserably at a school with unlimited resources? Contrary to what many believe, Champ is a nice guy. But like Malzahn, he is not a head coach. He’s a loose cannon, extremely immature and very intimidating to play for. I just don’t see this working out well for him or USC.

Then we have Orgeron. What in the hell was LSU thinking? Unlike USCe, LSU could have made a home run hire. Instead they settled for a buffoon that lead Ole Miss to an unblemished 0 and 8 conference record before being thrown out on his yaw yaw (brent shaeffer). Not exactly the earmarks of a successful hire.

I thought Butch Jones at Tennessee was a good hire. Boy was I wrong. He assembled the worse staff in the conference and every time he adds another coach it gets worse. Without a complete revamp, Vandy could soon be the dominating program in the state. Makes one wonder why Tennessee is still treading water. Fire this clown and move on.

Florida is another program with all the resources in the world - the state school in arguably the most fertile recruiting state in the country. A school that could have hired almost any coach. But, instead of going after a proven commodity they brought in a coach with 3 years experience - all in the Mountain West. Will Teeth end up being a success at Florida? Maybe. After all, if you don’t count his underwhelming efforts on the recruiting trail and 8 blow-out losses his first two years, he has been a rousing success.

Finally we get to Georgia. Another school with unlimited resources surrounded by a hotbed of talent. I think it is too early to judge Smart. Like McElwain, he could end up being a fantastic hire. But like Florida, like LSU, like Auburn, why hire an unknown, a proven retread or lifelong coordinator? You play in the best conference in the world. You have the money and resources to hire anyone in the world. Do it. Stop being a training ground for unknowns.

I was going to mention Bret Bart Bielema but since he is a fat ass with a hot wife coaching in a place no one should be forced to live, I passed. Besides, I kinda like the guy even if he can’t coach.

don't disagree but I think when Urban bolted from the conference that woke everyone up to the fact there are plenty of good places to land that will pay you 3-5M/yr and you don't have to try and outdo Bama and Saban everyday.

Other than Sumlin none of the "next big thing" coaches have ended up in SEC...they're heading to UNC, Va Tech, Pitt, Texas, Oregon, etc

can't blame them...only real reason to be an SEC coach right now is the paycheck. Two programs went for high school coaches and teh rest hired life-long assistants or previously unsuccessful head coaches

i saw one writer approx 6-8 weeks ago wrote an article claiming the SEC had the worst overall group of head coaches in the power 5. hard to argue with him IMHO

(btw I still think Kirby is saban junior and he will end up being a top 5 head coach in college football)

Urban certainly woke up the Big Ten in that it needed to step up it's recruiting game (speaking of the other 3 programs that have real recruiting potential). In that sense, it had more impact than just potential landing spots for top coaches.

Kirby is just getting started and I really don't know enough about him to venture a guess. If you are right, then the pressure won't get to him while he cuts teeth. He's in the right division for success, though we know success breeds expectation. And the eventual expectation will be to beat daddy when given the chance.

i guess it will happen someday to CNS and it will be a gut punch if the first defeat is to Kirby in 2017 SEC title game (or to Kiffin in title game when Kiffy takes over UCLA next year).

Saban's former assistants are now 0-9 against him with all 9 defeats by at least 14 points

jimbo fisher is on the clock....

cumulatives scores to date are:
Saban 122, Dooley 29 / Saban 87, Dantonio 7 / Saban 80, Muschamp 31 / Saban 60, McElwain 21 / Saban Fisher ?

SEC Media Days begin tomorrow (Monday) in Hoover (B'ham) where the head coaches and three players will address the media about the coming season. Actually a fun time here in Alabama...press from all over.

Monday: Arkansas, LSU, Tennessee
Tuesday: Georgia, Miss St., Vandy, Florida
Wednesday: Bama, Missouri, Tx AM, Kentucky
Thursday: S. Carolina, Ole Miss, Auburn

I and a couple of buddies will probably drive down Wednesday just to experience the excitement. Saban in town and it will be special for tons in this state.

Fun experience if you ever get the chance to visit. ESPN and SEC Network will cover this event like a glove.

HOOVER, ALABAMA- SEC commissioner Greg Sankey took to the podium on Monday afternoon to kick of the 2017 edition of SEC Media Days. Sankey like always addressed the state of the SEC, plus went into detail on some changes and recapped the past year.

[h=1]GREG SANKEY SEC MEDIA DAY PRESS CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK[/h]

GatorCountry is live in Hoover and brings you a recap of what Sankey had to say on Monday afternoon in this notebook.

 • On December 9th the SEC will turn 85 years old as a conference. The conference was created in 1932 in downtown Knoxville.
 • The SEC won national championships in six different sports and had two playing in the national championship in both women’s basketball and baseball.
 • Sankey says the SEC is seeking permission from the NCAA to expand the use of instant replay in baseball.
 • Going to a 14-week season is something that Sankey isn’t opposed to but says he doesn’t want summer practice to start earlier.
 • Sankey also says that they’re continuing to make adjustments on shortening the breaks between action in football games. Mentions keeping half-time as close to 20 minutes as they can making sure they come out of media breaking quickly.
 • The SEC will continue to focus on player safety and two things being looked like are blocking below the waist and blind-side blocking. Sankey believes the targeting class are doing their job right now.
 • Starting on Monday’s at 7:00 P.M. the SEC will have a new show called “thinking out loud” that will feature Greg McElroy and Marcus Spears in one-hour football discussion show.
 • Starting next spring, the SEC network will host some swimming and diving meets along with the indoor track and field finals on TV.
 • The SEC commissioner now has the authority to say when and where a make-up game will be played.
 • Division realignment is something that has not been a topic of discussion for Sankey and the athletic directors.

Coach, I and a couple of friends went down to B,ham for SEC Media Days and it was a lot of fun. MOST enjoyable times were in the hotel bar where we met many (many) of the sports writers. Learned some sharp opinions which was good, but had a better time taking in the whole experience. Made some good friends and that's what's the sports world is all about.

Ross just dropped 90 spots on the 247 list down to 138th in the country. monster drop but when you run a 4.8 and get owned by your peers in 1v1's at a camp, that's what happens.
